(Charred on the outside, raw on the inside.) 『I've had this grill for a couple months now and still haven't gotten a piece of meat cooked to my satisfaction. The title of this review says it all: I've tried low temps, medium temps, high temps, thin cuts, thick cuts, and no matter what I do my steak comes out tough and charred outside and almost raw on the inside.
For some reason the heating element doesn't radiate much beyond contact with whatever you're cooking. I keep finding myself trapped between wanting the interior of the meat cooked beyond rare and ending up with the exterior of the meat overly charred. 』
(an excellent BBQ grill) 『My wife and I have been using this grill for about 2 months now. Gladly, we haven't had any problem with it so far. The only 'downside', though, is that if you soak up your meat in marinade/spices, most of the marinade/spices doesn't stick to the meat. Instead, it melts and sticks on the grill. This, of course, makes it hard to clean the grill. Other than that, the grill is super. I'd strongly recommend it.』
(LOVE IT LOVE IT) 『THIS IS GREAT FOR SMALL OR INTIMATE DINNER PARTIES,FOOD CAN BE SERVED RIGHT OF THE GRILL HOT,GREAT PRODUCT!!!!!』
(It stopped working after first use!!!!) 『I was so excited to get this as I wanted to make healthier food after a few health problems. It worked fine the first time I use it. Then the 2nd time onwards, it just refused to heat up! No matter how high I put the temp, the grill remain cool. There are no instructions on how to troubleshoot this and I'm lost at how I can get this fixed.
I bought this from Amazon US and I live in Singapore to exchange or return it is going to cost me more than what it cost in buying it. I'm so disappointed with Sanyo and this product.
I do NOT recommend anyway to waste their money on this product. Go buy something that can guarantee you meals for many years and not just one time.』 『When inclement weather keeps you inside, you can still grill using this indoor barbecue grill from Sanyo. Fill the drip pan with water before you begin grilling and you can cook with virtually no smoke in your kitchen; the excess fats drip into the pan below, extinguishing any smoke and allowing for healthier cooking, too. The grilling surface is nonstick for easier cleanup. The temperature control is adjustable; turn it down low for cooking tender vegetables and delicate seafood or turn it up for grilling heartier fare like steaks, pork sausages and chicken breasts. The Sanyo indoor barbecue grill has a cool-touch base and handles; the drip pan is removable and is dishwasher-safe. The indoor grill comes with a bilingual instruction manual that also includes recipes.』

I have probably used this baby over 500 times now, and it's still going strong (at less than 5 cents per use plus less than 15 cents in kernels). Only complaint is that the hood comes off it's it not aligned in the grooves, but it fits very easily. Hood also gets hot after popping, so careful if you're leaving it around kids. I would buy this little powerhouse again in a heartbeat. Works fast, not too noisy compared to other hot-air poppers, and only in the range of 20 unpopped kernels per large bowl.』
(Great, just what I wanted...) 『Works as it should. I remembered these from the 70's and my daughter wanted one. I found that they still make them, ordered it and it works like it should. Good deal!』
(No Complaints) 『This machine works great and makes perfect pop corn. Just be sure to unplug it when it's done popping as there is no on/off switch.』
(fast popper) 『i thought it popped fast once it started popping and the kids love to watch it pop. It was what we were looking for making lots of popcorn fast.』
(AWESOME!) 『I've had this for a long while (First appliance I bought when I moved out) and this thing is great. No mess, pops quickly, very few un-popped seeds. Add you're own oils/butter and salt and you're set. It pays for itself realy quick because pop corn cornels are a few bucks and last forever』 『Pops with hot air, not oil, for a healthy low fat snack. Pops up to 18 cups in less than 2-1/2 minutes and leaves virtually no unpopped kernels. For regular or gourmet popcorn. Removeable butter melter doubles as measuring cup. Easy to clean, base and cov er simply wipe clean. 120 Volts AC, 1440 watts. U.L. Listed.』 『Plug in the Orville Redenbacher Hot Air Corn Popper and the party begins. In less than 2-1/2 minutes you'll have up to 18 cups--two large bowlfuls--of fluffy popcorn with virtually no unpopped kernels. And because the machine uses hot air instead of oil, the resulting snack is healthier and lower in calories. That's not to say you can't add butter; in fact, the 1/2-cup measuring cup on top of the popper doubles as a butter melter. Simply put in the desired amount of margarine or butter (room temperature is best), and it melts from the heat produced during the popping process. The clear plastic cover and cup, which must stay on during popping so the popped corn doesn't fly all over the room, easily remove for hand cleaning with warm, soapy water. No other clean-up is required. While a few unpopped kernels spring out the chute as the machine begins to heats up, the chute does a good job of directing the popped corn into a bowl. The popper measures 14 by 9 by 6-1/2 inches, and is identical to Presto's PopLite Hot Air Corn Popper except for color and logo. Presto covers the popper with a two-year warranty.--Ann Bieri』

You have to carry the filter around with the glass pot. The biggest problem was the strong plastic smell of the brewed coffee, which didn't go away even after several times of brewing. The water container and all internal plastic tubes release this smell into the hot water and you taste/smell it later in the coffee. As it didn't go away after several days of use, we returned the machine.』
(Worked fine-then stopped!) 『I had a very fancy coffee maker that I had received as a wedding present that ground the beans and brewed automatically (Cuisinart) that I loved but did always seem clumsy/dirty and finally petered out after a year. After searching and searching on Amazon and reading reviews, I settled on this one. It's not very 'cool' looking, as others have pointed out, but that's not very big deal to me. Everything is compact and seems to be much cleaner because all of the parts are detachable and separate. After about a week of use, the coffee pot stopped working. I tried and tried, but it just would not brew a pot of coffee. It would make the noises, steam the water....nothing. I've sent it back to Amazon and went ahead and shelled out the extra money for a pod style coffee maker (B60). I guess you get what you pay for?』
(excellent value coffee maker) 『I am very happy I bought this. Works great and no mess, like regular drip coffee makers. Very easy to clean and use. haven't used the grinder yet, but seems very easy and handy. Only negative is you have to remove the filter tray before pouring coffee, but that design is also what keeps the machine clean.』
(Sanyo Coffee/tea maker) 『I purchased this coffee maker about one month ago, after my 2nd Krups coffeemaker died. It dumped water out of the bottom. My previous experiences with Cuisinarts were equally bad.
I wanted a grind and brew coffee maker as I like to drink many different flavored coffees and enjoy the aroma and taste of freshly ground beans. The other brands of coffee makers were expensive and in the long run didn't last over a year before developing problems.
I chose the Sanyo SAC-MST6 Coffee/Tea Maker due to the fact it is designed to do one thing...make coffee or tea, no fancy programing, clocks, coffee strengths etc. The bonus for me was the price!

I recently saw them in concert and decided to give it a try, and I'm glad I did. It isn't as good an album as their first self-titled album, Asia, which truly was their alpha album, but it isn't a bad follow-up. Really, how could they top their monstrously successful first album?! I would have given it 4 stars, but the recording isn't top-notch. I had to to some tweaking in i-tunes to even get any volume out of it.
P.S. Steve Howe is in his 70's and still plays guitar better than many guitarists today. I was amazed with his skills in their recent Phoenix tour!!!』
("trading integrity for platinum") 『1983 : Asia was on the top of the music world. Following a highly successful debut album which welded the adventurous nature of progressive rock with the sensibilities of commercial pop. The pressure was on to make a successful follow up. John Wetton&Geoff Downes had the most commercially successful compositions on the first album, so the label chose them to compose the entire album, effectively shutting out Steve Howe from the creative process, and severing the key link with the prog-rock elements that made the first album so strong. Carl Palmer was also held very much in check, for John&Geoff's compositions were very much on the pop side, and the "wall of sound" heavily echoed mixes left Carl&Steve out in the cold.
The Tracks:
"Don't Cry" was the group's most successful single, and the album's opener. The opening bars are promising with Steve's electric and Carl's hi-hat lay over Geoff's piano, turning into a high energy steel guitar and tom-tom rolls-all of which leads to...a straight pop song that features John's vocals (he did all of the vocals on the album; no more 3-part harmony) and Geoff's keyboards - this was to be the pattern for most of the album.
"The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" is a Wetton solo composition which would be a great power ballad for any regular pop band, but too lightweight for this quartet.
"Never in a Million Years"&"True Colors" ... The less said about these two lame-a** tracks, the better !
"My Own Time" was a track with great potential, but the "guitarless&drumless" mix that dominated the album reduced it's impact. A great injustice...
"The Heat Goes On" is a solid rock and roll track that highlights Geoff's keyboards in all forms, but his organ slo could have been strengthened by trade-offs with Steve's guitar. Still...a highlight.
"Eye To Eye" is a watered down re-make of "Wildest Dreams", that is well-structured, but is in too high a key for John's voice, and Steve's solo is mired down in the "wall of sound" . A wasted opportunity.
"The Last to Know" is reminiscent of "Without You" from the first album, with an apparent ballad structure that changes direction in the middle, but is missing the clarity of the first album.
"Midnight Sun" is for me, the album's high point; from the 7/4 time in the verses, to the cryptical lyrics, to Steve's majestic guitar solo, played on his Gibson ES-345, this is the track most reminiscent of the debut album.
"Open Your Eyes" is another strong track musically, that is a great jam that features Geoff&Steve in a duet middle solo and trade-offs during the coda. The album ends stronger than it starts, but the shoddy mix detracts from the strong tracks and highlights the weak ones. Two other songs from the sessions, "Daylight" and Steve's lone contribution "Lying to Yourself", could have been utilized instead of "Never in a Million Years" and "True Colors".
The album went platinum, but led to a rift in the band, causing a temporary departure of Wetton, and upon his return, the permanent departure of Howe.
The original band would not record again for 25 years, returning with 2008's "Phoenix" (see my Phoenix review). 3 stars out of 5 for "Alpha"&what could have been.』
(Prog Goes Bubblegum) 『Are you guys kidding ? If Prog was not a joke before, Asia made damn sure that anyone with any sense at all abandoned ship. If it were not for the reconstituted King Crimson - it would have all been over. I'm a fan of the Downes-era Yes and even the first album but this......contrived and formula driven dribble.』
(Paula Abdule Likes It!) 『I like Asia, I really do. I'm not so sure I am satisfied with this album from some of the "giants" playing on this CD. I loved their first recording and I heard a lot of positive talk about this their second album "Alpha". I ordered a used copy on Amazon for less than a dollar and I am still wandering if I got a deal. I coulsdn't tell if that is Carl Palmer or my cousin on drums and where in the world was Steve Howe (on the telephone?)Most of the songs, while ok, sound as if they were stamped from the same mold and don't offer up much variety. I would rather reccomend their first album "Asia" or the latest release "Phoenix". Back to you Paula. - Ciao』
(One song missing) 『As a follow-up release to ASIA's self-titled best-selling album, "Alpha" does a relatively good job of holding its own.
The biggest hit featured, "Don't Cry", doesn't have nearly the punch of the first album's claim to fame, "Heat Of The Moment", but it is still an enjoyable listen.
One of the drawbacks of the album is that so many of its selections, while truly well-executed, never received their much-deserved attention and airplay on the radio at the time of the album's release. "Never In A Million Years" is a fine power ballad, and "My Own Time (I'll Do What I Want)" is a powerful anthem for any wannabe rebellious teen of the '80s. The song that comes closest to the strength and impact of the first album is "The Heat Goes On", with cords and lyrics that harken back to the band's initial work.
But it must be noted that there is one near-criminal omission on this CD. In the original LP and cassette release of 1983, there was a final song included, entitled "Daylight". Arguably the best song on the entire album, it was presumably cut because back in the day CDs were quite new and the time allotted on them was fairly limited. Rather than examine the listing for the least impressive piece, the final track was simply eliminated when "Alpha" first came out on CD. (Why, in a time where we can now fit 20 tracks on one dsic, the album was never re-released with its original, full listing, is beyond me.)
If you can find the song "Daylight" on another collection or download it, do so by all means. "Alpha" is indeed worth having in your music library, but preferably on vinyl or, if you can actually find one, cassette. It's CD version is indeed lacking considerably with one of its best cuts missing.』 『Japanese limited edition reissue of 1983 album, packaged in a miniature LP sleeve.』 『Japanese Limited Version featuring an LP Style Slipcase Cover.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Coolest Cover, Worst Version) 『There are still a few versions of Phantom I haven't seen, but so far, this has to be the worst. It has the best cover art and the most boring flow. I could accept the liberties taken (no mask, raised by rats) if it weren't for an execution of the plot that made me want to fall asleep. Never mind that the Phantom's costume was awful. I gave this movie two stars. One star goes to the cover art, the other a combination of Asia Argento and the chandelier scene, though even that scene would've been better had he a disfigured face or a mask.』
(Hideous and unbelievably ridiculous) 『Raised by rats?? How did they feed him as an infant?? How did he learn to speak?? Most gruesome movie.... And the casting... Okay, I only lasted 15 minutes, so I can't detail, but puleeze! It would be just as believable a script had he been raised by tomatoes!』
(Dario Argento's Phantom of The Opera) 『The Phantom of the Opera is one of the greatest stories ever told. It make a perfect horror theme and it's been done so many times. I called Argento the master of the kill because each one of his movies usually has one awesome kill. That all being said, this movie should have been a pure winner. Well, it's not. The opera scenes are beautiful, the music is good if not standard, but the story sucks. The Phantom is raised by rats and his face is not scarred at all. The one problem I had was during the kills the screen just turns black and all you hear is screams and thuds. I have no idea why they would do that but oh well.
Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera is not the best version of the film by far. If your a hardcore fan of the story, movies, or Broadway plays then you may want to stay away. If you know nothing of the story and just want something to watch then i'd check it out.』
(really bad dvd) 『This movie is not all bad, but the dvd transfer is total crap. It looks worse than a vhs tape. Hopefully this will get released in widescreen with a better transfer.』
(The Phantom of Rat Bohemia) 『Good gawd almighty! That was my first reaction once I'd finished watching Italian horror maestro, Dario Argento's version of the oft-filmed "Phantom of the Opera". I think it's safe to say that there's never been another "Phantom" quite like it. It starts out as a sort of twisted variation on the Tarzan legend, with an abandoned baby in a foreign environment being rescued and raised by the resident wildlife. As most people know, with Tarzan it was apes who did the child-rearing. But it may come as something of a surprise to learn that with the Opera Phantom, it's, er, um, rats doing the parenting. At least according to Argento. Which begs any number of questions, none the least of which are: how did the rats nourish and feed the baby, change his diapers, bathe him, teach him to speak English, and play the piano, for crying out loud? Of course, the rats are telepathic, as is the Phantom, so I guess that could explain it. However, that's only the beginning of a film that goes so far over-the-top that I suspect it's still in orbit.
The gore and violence, a staple of most Argento films, are present, but not in the abundance that might be expected; there's a decapitation and a tongue being ripped out, in a grotesque parody of a French kiss, and a few more nasty deaths but, all things considered, it could have been worse. What's not a staple of Argento films is the graphic sex and nudity, (which I'm normally fine with) that includes a bordello scene in which the Phantom's nemesis, Raoul, lies on a chaise lounge, wrapped only in a towel, sucking on a hookah, while surrounded by a phalanx of nightmarish, Fellini-esque characters, all naked and looking like they stopped by the baths enroute to a "Night of the Living Dead" shoot. When a frisky prostitute takes a nose dive beneath Raoul's towel, he's not pleased--he's saving himself for heroine, Christine--and he shoves her away, with no little show of force. There are two vile, yet somehow Disneyesque ratcatchers, who tool around the sewers beneath the opera house in what looks like a modified dune buggy that snatches up rats and...oh, don't ask. At about the time that the Phantom unbuttoned his shirt and let some of the more amorous rats run across his chest and nipples, I started getting bug-eyed. When he got excited and began undoing his pants to allow them access to his manly business, my hair was standing on end. At that moment, I knew that this movie had gone so far over the mark that it wasn't ever coming back. And yet, I found myself hoping that these sex partner-rats weren't the Phantom's mum and dad, because that would be just...eeeeuuuuwwwww. And then, of course, a little voice rose within me and said: they're rats, idiot!
Aside from the rats, there are some pretty good performances, believe it or not. Julian Sands is appropriately weird as the murderous, yet romantic, Phantom of the Opera. I was disturbed that he didn't wear a mask (disfigured or not) but his long, stringy, greasy hair was fairly eerie in itself. As demonstrated in earlier efforts such as "Warlock", Sands is adept at playing haughty, mysterious creeps who are vaguely aristocratic and mostly evil. I think if he had portrayed Lestat in "Interview With the Vampire" (reportedly Anne Rice's original intention), it would have been an entirely different movie; there's a certain sexual ambiguity that Sands projects onscreen that would have been entirely suited to that character (and which Tom Cruise didn't have). Plus he looks good naked. He'd have made a perfect "Dorian Grey", as well. Argento's daughter, Asia, assays the role of Christine, the sopranic understudy who becomes the object of the titular character's affections. Asia Argento doesn't seem to be sleepwalking so much here as she has in other of her father's films. She's a lively and passionate heroine who is confused by the two men vying for her charms. That she beds down with the Phantom on more than one occasion, further muddles the poor girl. These scenes could have had a genuine erotic power (Argento looks good naked, too) and they are well filmed, but I just kept thinking of what the randy Phantom had been up to with the rats in his pants and...oh brother, I just hope he showered before joining Ms. Argento in bed. As rival, Raoul, Andrea di Stefano looks a little like Prince in "Purple Rain" (only with long, stringy hair--what is it with these guys?)--he's brave, but seemingly addled (perhaps by too much toking on the hookah); by the time, he attempts to save the day, he's moving at a snail's pace through the tunnels beneath the Paris Opera House, looking debauched and disheveled and almost as crazed as the Phantom.
Basically a remake (or re-imagining) of Argento's much better "Opera", "Phantom" is a freaky, beautifully filmed head trip that, in spite of its many difficulties and ludicrous plot developments, has a certain queasy charm that will definitely not appeal to some. Dario Argento is an imaginative creative genius who seems incapable of being reigned in, but what would he be otherwise? I sort of like him like this.
』 『Leaden horror costumer that takes its tenuous starting point from the classic Gaston Leroux novel of the same name. The twist in this variation is that the Phantom was raised by telepathic rats in the subterranean caverns beneath the opera house. Thus our feral Phantom (Julian "Ratboy" Sands) develops an obsessive love for up-and-coming diva Christine (Asia Argento), and sets about to seduce her to his dark, rodent existence. Although beautifully photographed, with lots of ornate period detail to catch the eye, this is largely a by-the-numbers supernatural horror story with scant gory set pieces as diversions. Fans of Dario Argento will yell "Rats!" and all else will merely shrug. And why are the rats telepathic, anyway? Screenwriting credits go to Gerard Brach, best known for his many collaborations with Roman Polanski, most notablyRepulsion. However, none of his absurd sense of humor comes through in this film, which really needs it. A shame all around. The DVD includes a short interview with the film's star, Julian Sands, as well as a photo gallery, some dispensable making-of clips, spliced together to appear as a featurette (mostly in untranslated Italian) and a very informative article from Fangoria Magazine.--Jim Gay』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A Glorious Dose of Culture!) 『After being impressed by some of Director Pudovkin's earlier films, I was curious to see "Storm over Asia" which is billed as 'Pudovkin's Masterpiece'- and I couldn't agree more! Unlike the other films I'd seen (End of St Petersburg, Chess Fever) this grand epic takes us to remote Mongolia for a real dose of authentic culture, complete with genuine Mongolians, their traditional homes, a lama and local Buddhist temple ceremonies. Excellent photography and attention to details already makes the cultural aspect a most interesting and exciting experience for the armchair traveller and dreamer of exotic places. Picture quality throughout is very good, and the music is outstanding, being an original score by Timothy Brock incorporating perfectly-suited Russian and Mongolian melodies and sounds. For the Buddhist temple ceremony even authentic instruments must have been used to replicate the music played on such occasions, making the cultural experience more than merely visual. The story itself blends fact with fiction, highlighting the plight of the Mongolian tribesmen who live a simple life, and are exploited by foreigners who want to profit from the fur trade. The focus is on one Mongolian who resists the exploitation, then by a twist of fate becomes the pawn for British troops in the region who want to use him to gain more control over the Mongolian natives. Politics and cultural identity make the plot, but a large part of the film's success is no doubt due to Pudovkin's skill in imagery and depicting emotions and drama with poignant images. An excellent film in itself, enhanced even more by its authentic filming location in Mongolia and genuine cultural experience.』
(Incredible) 『I can't really add much to the only other review, but I, too, find it unfortunate that this film and much of Pudovkin's work has been largely made invisible due to the glare of Eisenstein (or if you're into cultural studies during the New Economic Policy, Protazanov and the other 'commercial' directors at Mezhrabprom-Rus). While this film represents Pudovkin at his peak, awash as it is in ethnographic detail, a real human story (instead of Eisenstein's cardboard cutouts), and the completely sublime use of his trademark 'bricking' montage, his other films (especially less famous ones like 'Chess Fever' and 'Deserter') deserve a look, too.』
(Dazzling editing in powerful Soviet masterpiece) 『Storm Over Asia/The Heir to Genghis Khan is one of those titles frequently seen in film history books but rarely seen on a screen. Good to have it at last, then, because it's one of the best films to come out of the Soviet 1920s-- a work of rat-a-tat editing on a par with Gance's Napoleon and an example of slowly-smoldering drama finally delivering with a vengeful wallop worthy of The Godfather. Pudovkin consistently displayed the human touch that colleagues such as Eisenstein and Dovzhenko lacked, and the story of a Mongolian peasant who is used as a puppet ruler by the British until he finally unleashes the force of his people upon them is gripping throughout. In short, a masterpiece that is also a cracking good movie.』 『The last of the three great films that V.I. Pudovkin directed in the 1920s,Storm over Asia(1928) is an acknowledged classic of Soviet silent cinema. Filmed largely on location in Mongolia, the film has an authentic documentary feel, though the story is a stirring melodrama, about a young fur trapper who is mistreated by the occupying forces in the civil war and becomes a leader of the partisans. Pudovkin enjoys caricaturing the foreign (British) troops and the medieval rituals of a Buddhist temple, but it's out on the steppes that he really comes into his own, with panoramic shots of the vast landscapes. Together withMother(1926) andThe End of St. Petersburg(1927),Storm over Asia(also known asThe Heir to Genghis Khan) entitles Pudovkin to be ranked with Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov as a master of the Soviet montage style, which he expounded in his bookFilm Technique(1929).--Ed Buscombe』

(A PRESCIENT DRAMA) 『Marlon Brando starred in "The Ugly American", which despite its title was not liberal, but proved to be prescient. It was loosely based on the friendship developed between an American fighter pilot, shot down and fighting with guerillas, and Ho Chi Minh, who was fighting the Japanese during World War II. Marlon, the former pilot-turned-PR-executive, is named ambassador to a small Southeast Asian nation modeled on Indochina. The reason he is appointed is because of his friendship with a populist leader there who the U.S. fears may be a Communist. Brando assures them the man is not one, but when he gets there he discovers the man is. Their friendship turns into mortal enmity, and America's largesse, goodwill and social conscience are thrown back at us by savage mobs roiled by Marxist ideology. The final scene shows a press conference detailing the crisis, with a businessman changing the channel on his TV to show American indifference to the world's crises. Considering what happened in Vietnam over the next years, it proved to be a real cautionary tale.』
(Third World politics meets First World might) 『After his rather tepid performance in MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (1962), Marlon Brando rebounded well as Ambassador Harrison MacWhite in THE UGLY AMERICAN (1963).
The politics of this story remain vital. This concerns the situation in Vietnam just prior to America's full scale military involvement. South and North Vietnam are given aliases, yet it's clear where this story unfolds.
A modern "Freedom Road' being constructed through the heart of "Sarkan" is seen by populist leader Deong (Eiji Okada) not as an effort at modernization, but as a route for the American military to use in overrunning his country. The project is sabotaged by Deong and his followers, and as Amabassador MacWhite arrives thousands flock to Deong's banner. The partisan's message of a small nation refusing to allow a great one to dominate it should be heeded today more than ever.
Watching this story from the distance of 45 years leaves one wishing LBJ had reconsidered his Domino theory and an incursion that was doomed to fail. Perhaps if he had, more recent actions might have also been given deeper thought before American troops were committed to again invade a sovereign nation and wage a war whose outcome at best would be stalemate.
Also recommended: Mel Gibson's WE WERE SOLDIERS (2002) is a superb recounting of America's first set battle in Vietnam. In November 1965, the 7th Cavalry was outnumbered 10 to 1 in their desperate struggle at the la Drang valley.

(Dated but interesting) 『I just watched it dubbed into Thai. There is a disclaimer on this version stating that although Thailand had just undergone a coup, this fictional country was not meant to be Thailand. Does that mean it was shot there and the Thai government requested the disclaimer? I do not remember it being on the US version but I saw that one over 40 years ago. I could not place the location as Thailand since the vehicles were left, rather than right hand drive. No indication as to the shooting location that I could find. Any ideas? Dated story and a simplistic Cold War Hollywood view. I read the book in the 50s and was impressed by it as I was by "The Manchurian Candidate". The film had more impact on me in '59 when I saw it than it did yesterday. Still, not a bad performance by Brando and probably an accurate view of the simplistic view most Americans had about French Indo-China. Ironic that he went on to play Col Kurtz. It was worth the 19 baht (47 cents approximatly) that I paid for it. It would not have been worth more.』
(Decent, but could have been a lot better) 『In 'The Ugly American' we find Marlon Brando playing Harrison Mac White, the American ambassador to the ficticious Asian country of Sarkan. What we are presented with is a decent political plot, but one with significant flaws.
Brando stars opposite Eiji Okada who plays his old Sarkanese friend Deong, and herein lies one of the film's major problems. Okada's performance is limited. He does not appear convincing as the leader of his people, his fiendship with Brando appears lukewarm at best and he regularly stumbles over his lines. Brando puts in a quality performance, but this is not enough to stop the relationships between the characters from appearing somewhat forced.
The story itself is an interesting look at American foreign policy during the cold war, the ambiguous reasoning behind it and the reactions of those in the nations whom it effected.
Overall 'The Ugly American' is worth a watch, but those expecting a top notch, taught political thriller will be left disappointed.』 『The united states sends a new ambassador to a divided southeast asian country about to explode. I love these performances, occasionally I may want to shake the camera man, but simply not that often. Before I offer my opinion I must say all these dancers are very accomplished and I mean no disrespect to any of them. As I said, this is simply my opinion of a fantastic DVD.
Urban Tribal performed two pieces. I find their choreographies very sophisticated, their interpretation of the music convincing and the interplay between the members of what is quite a large troupe quite inspiring. All the dancers seem very skilled and controlled, like moving sculptures. Their costumes are very plain and perhaps not totally to my taste but they reflect their style which follows elongated clean lines and seems to have more in common with modern dance than with belly dance.
Sharon Kihara dances two solos. The first failed to wow me. Her movements seemed to have a cursory connection with the music. Her second solo had strongly chopped music with dramatic accents and changes which suited her big moves. Sharon wears a crazy ugly costume which appears to be a bra made from plastic skulls and a stiff chained leather half skirt. Yet somehow it all suited her style and I was captivated despite myself.
Zoe Jakes and Elizabeth Strong perform a duo which simply has the wow factor. Great moves which fit with the style of music. This dance has dramatic changes in pace, a strong relationship between the dancers and real understanding of the music, all of which make this piece really dynamic.
Moria's first performance was to a great piece of music with play between classical music, Turkish Rom 9/8 and 4/4 drums. I love this piece of music. However I was disappointed. Moria's performance seems frenetic and her costume wild but somehow I wasn't convinced she really understood the music or that even her costume really reflected all the music had to offer. Her second performance also had a pretty wild costume, but it didn't really flatter the dance moves. I still believe costumes should emphasize rather than conceal dance moves, a hip shimmy is lost when all the moment is seen in the ruffles at your feet. Again I wasn't convinced by her connection to the music, but she did end the piece very well.
Kami Liddle was elegant, her costume reflected this and her moves were lovely in response to changes in the music. Her second piece of music was more monotonous, more like dance floor music and didn't show her skills as a dancer to as much advantage as the first piece.
Fat Chance performed two pieces. I enjoyed the first more then the second but I have seen much more dynamic performances from them. Carolena performs her trademark tummy rolls and flutters, but this was one of the places where I started to resent the person behind the camera as it focused any where but her stomach.
Samantha is rapidly becoming one of my favourite dancers. She really seems to know her rhythms. Her first dance is to a fusion 9/8 Rom. Samantha's understanding of the music allows her to successfully marry Rom style gestures with hip hop fusion. Her second piece was performed to a rather inaccessible piece of music in a rather tricky costume with a trailing tail. Her skill made the music more accessible to the audience and she used her trailing skirt elegantly and to great advantage. Yummy.
Elizabeth Strong performed in a duo mentioned earlier and also in two solos. Her classical sword piece showed her beautiful fluid and curves postures to great advantage. Her style is softer then many of the other dancers. She seems infinitely flexible and performs back bends as huge graceful arcs. This piece was simply gorgeous. Her second piece was also lovely, but not quite as gripping, her soft seemingly effortless moves didn't seem to quite gel with the music.
Zoe Jakes performed a duo mentioned earlier and two solos. Definitely a "Wow" sort of performer. Her dance style is certainly a few steps away from Belly dance but her dynamic expression and musical interpretation makes me not care a jot. Two great choices of music, great costumes and clever use of quiet and busy, fast and slow to keep the audience riveted. Not many dancers could get away moves which make you look like a hunched, hanging marionette!
Sharon, Moria, Samantha, Zoe and Kami perform together under the name Tribal Superstars. This is a lovely dance but the solos and duos are so innovative that in comparison this piece could have used some of the passion put into the other performances. A really lovely dance but hardly innovative. These women are all so talented they could have really put something together that wowed.
Sonia and Colleen perform another wonderful duo, Colleen in tribal dress and stylization and Sonia in Oriental. Great choice of music, plenty of changes to grip the audience and these changes were made the most of. I loved the contrast in styles sometimes dramatic, sometimes subtle and sometimes the same. Performed beautifully by both dancers.
Gosh what a long review, I hope it helps you decide whether to purchase it or not. 』 『Studio: Uni Dist Corp (music) Release Date: 10/06/2009』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Sweet and tastey for Asian food) 『This is a standard for noodle shops. That said, I gave it 4 stars because it is sweet and will change the flavors of your food (though often for the better). It's spicy, but not too spicy. I can eat it by itself with no problems.』
(deliciously hot and spicy) 『ive been searching for years for this stuff. depending on how much u use, varies the heat index. its not one of those hot for no reason type sauces. its full of flavors. i use it on pretty much anything i wanna give a zing to. great with rice, eggs, hotdogs, u name it. definintly worth givin a try. but start slow, a couple drops is all it takes! :)』
(This is the new Ketchup) 『I was going to High School in California about 15 years ago when a Vietnamese friend of mine INSIST that I try this. I'm pretty open minded to new kinds of foods so I gave it a try. "Tongue Ought Shurocka?" I said. "DUDE!" "Not even close!" he said as he laughed like hell. I still have no idea how to pronounce the name but it has been my favorite Hot Sauce ever since. Over the years, I have been seeing it pop up everywhere from PF Chang's&Applebee's to Firehouse Subs. If you like hot sauce or any kind of spicy foods at all, then you MUST try this. I INSIST.
Imagine going through your entire life without Ketchup or BBQ sauce? Just take a second and actually think about how plain so many foods would taste like without them. "The Rooster Sauce" is like that. As you can see from the other reviews, it has about the same applications as BBQ sauce or Ketchup would have for a person who likes it hot. No other hot sauce that I have ever tried has the same texture, heat and most importantly FLAVOR as this one does. It brings out the flavor in nearly anything that you put it on, from the obvious Tacos, burritos, Chow Mein, Chili, Meat&Poultry, to Clam Chowder, fish sticks or even.. OMG Peanut Butter Sandwiches? (haven't done that one yet but it's probably ... interesting).
Let me try to describe this to somebody who hasen't tried "The Rooster Sauce" before. First of all, unlike standard hot sauce, it has the texture of Ketchup or BBQ sauce which makes it cling to any kind of finger foods, chips, etc. perfectly. The taste is what is the kicker though. A garlicky, sweet, HOT flavor that is vastly different from anything else. Since it comes in a convenient squeeze bottle, it can be applied to anything, anywhere. This stuff is a god send when living in a world of quick, frozen, packaged, fast food which is dull, bland and virtually tasteless. This is also great for anybody on a special diet who wants to add some flavor to a very limited menu.
As far as the Heat is concerned, let me warn you that this stuff is pretty darn HOT. It's made from Red Jalapeno paste so it's not ridiculously hot but it definitely has some serious heat. If you don't like hot, spicy food then this stuff probably isn't for you. On the other hand, a little goes a long way. Just a few drops add good spice and flavor. A WHOLE BUNCH ... may take a little getting used to. I've gotten to the point where I literally submerge things like chicken wings into this stuff. It will really make you sweat out those toxins.
"The Rooster Sauce" would also make a good gift for the person who has it all. A few years ago, I was living all the way across the U.S. and my Mom sent me a bottle. It sounds silly but it was one of the most cherished items in my house. If giving it to somebody who has never tried it before, it may very well be like introducing someone to BBQ or Ketchup for the first time. In other words it's a thing that they will always remember.
Now as far as complaints? Well as stated in another review, the cap can get a little bit gunky, so you may have to run it under the sink a few times to get it nice and clean again. Not a real big deal. The other isn't a complaint at all but because they don't use any artificial colors, the sauce can darken after a few months. It will go from the original bright red to a deep red color. I haven't really noticed a difference in taste though. Since this is hot sauce, you can store it unrefrigerated without worrying about it getting spoiled. I actually prefer to have the color change slightly then to have it filled with artificial junk to keep it looking nice. If you really have to keep the nice bright red color, then I suggest keeping it refrigerated.
One last thing to keep in mind. This product is MADE IN THE U.S.A. In an economy as bad as this one, we need all of the help we can get.』
(THIS STUFF IS THE BOMB !!) 『I first tried this incredible sauce at the NOODLES INC restaurant with a udon noodles type of dish with chicken breast and cilantro and bean sprouts. OMG !! this sauce is unique, sweet, perky and garlicky and this fresh kind of hotness you wont believe. I immediately went to King Soopers and bought the noodles, sprouts , cilantro and chicken and the Sauce to make this at home. YUMMMM !!』
(Tasty but slightly hot) 『Very tasty. I think it is hotter than original Tabasco. It is really good on eggs. Also very good on El Polo Loco BRC burritos. In fact, that is my main use. Makes fast food Mexican promoted up to campy business district lunch place Mexican with their home made salsas. 』 『Sriracha, made from sun ripened chiles, is ready to use in soups, sauces, pasta, pizza, chowmein or on anything to add a delicious spicy taste.』

My mother in law got this for my son when he started school. I was always yelling at him for being late and not getting up with the alarm clock but it was the alarm clock that was not working. The display inticates that the alarm is set but it won't go off consistantly every day. I will keep it as a clock but need something else for an alarm.』

To many buttons and if you press the wrong one it changes everything and you have to start all over! JUNK and this was my last attempt to buy a Disney product! Sound quality is very poor, and to difficult to operate!!!』
(Only Great Looking.) 『My wife bought this alarm clock for our 4 year son when he was in the Lightning McQueen "Cars" stage. It is great to look at. The sounds it makes do replicate the ones made in the movie. That's the best I can say about this clock...
I have to echo "AVK" that said it is poorly designed. Every time I deal with it I want to throw it in the garbage. We need to keep the manual underneath it because the keys to use it are not intuitive. If someone touches something you need to figure out what they did and try to undo it. There is no "sleep" program on this, you can never tell what station it is on, and setting an alarm is unduly complex. We'll be finding something else soon.
My background is that I have a Master's in Computer Science and my wife has a Engineering degree and we need to read the manual every time. I do like tinkering with computers and whatnot but not my son's alarm clock right before going to bed when he has stayed up too long already.』
(Looks nice; impossible to use) 『My mother-in-law bought this for my 5-year-old son for Christmas. It's a nice looking clock and sounds decent. However, it is virtually unusable. It has, I think, 7 cones on it for control buttons. However, you have to use exactly two of them to set the time, the alarm time, the alarm on/off and the date. I'm an engineer and it takes me time to figure out how to do it. There's no way my 5-year-old can. And for him, he'll just hit the cones and change something and then you have to reset everything.
Also, with the radio, it's not AM, only FM, despite the description. And there are no presets or even an indicator of what channel you're on. All you have is a Scan button. Hope you don't miss the channel you were looking for.
This is just a very poorly designed clock. It looks nice, but I can't imagine they let anyone try to use it before they put it in mass production.』 『KNG

You know the problem better than I: how to convince your precious daughter to go to medical school? The answer? Get an early start by giving her a Doctor Yue-Sai pediatrician doll and watch your fiendish plan bear fruit! (Insert evil laugh here.)
Seriously, the Yue-Sai Wa Wa doll is justly famous worldwide, an Asian alternative to the ubiquitous Barbie doll, every bit as beautiful and every bit as fashionable (and able to exchange clothing and accessories with her). To my eyes neither Yue-Sai Wa Wa's skin color, long black hair, nor eye shape stand out as distinctly Asian, but her facial shape certainly does. While there are quite a number of different Yue-Sai Wa Wa doll sets available, this is arguably the most educational.
Dr. Yue-Sai comes with a pair of sensible shoes, a two-piece outfit of pants and blouse, and a separate doctor's jacket, all inspired by Asian design and fabric. In addition she comes with a plastic stethoscope that fits into her ears, doctor's bag, and baby bottle, a paperbound 24-blank-page medical journal, a cardboard growth chart, and one soft-bodied baby boy doll. Finally because she practices Eastern as well as Western medicine she comes with a cardboard Chinese herbal medicine chest that can be opened at the bottom in order to stow away all of her stuff; however, this would probably last longer if it was made of plastic.
All kidding aside, this doll just might inspire a young Asian-American girl to aspire to a medical career she might not otherwise have dreamed of; at the very least it is a more plausible inspiration than Yet Another fashion model, movie star, or princess doll!

I remember going to museums as a child and seeing dioramas of the Mongoloid, Negroid and Caucasoid races; describing their characteristics and history. Until reading this book, I, foolishly, never realized that the same study of racial characteristics that led to the museum displays I saw as a child also led to political and military decisions; and like many decisions based upon specious theories, those decisions led to less than optimal results.
The American exceptionalists will scream that Bradley is a revisionist and does not take into account the unique factors that make our nation the shining beacon on the hill of humanity. Readers with a more open mind, however, will learn some facts about our history, and maybe even come away with optimism about our correct situation. If our nation could survive, and bury, a past based upon decisions Bradley describes, maybe we can also survive our current crop of politicians.
Bradley's story telling is superb and his use of contemporaneous images and quotations gives the reader the chance to decided for herself just what was in the mind of Roosevelt when he made his fateful decisions.
I always like to learn new things when I read. Bradley has given us a lot of new things to think about.』 『In 1905 President Teddy Roosevelt dispatched Secretary of War William Howard Taft on the largest U.S. diplomatic mission in history to Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, China, and Korea. In 2005, a century later, James Bradley traveled in the wake of Roosevelt's mission and discovered what had transpired in Honolulu, Tokyo, Manila, Beijing and Seoul.

Read in combination with Ahmed Rahsid's "Descent into Chaos" (See review) , it forms a powerful duo. The main strengths of Coll's book is its thoroughness from the American point of view. He has researched well the personalities involved within the US Government, particularly the CIA, and gives a coherent picture of how decisions were arrived. If one is a student of CIA history, this is a good starting point. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the story is a bit one-sided. It is a balanced book in its viewpoint but because the vast majority of the sources are English-based, I felt like I was reading only part of the story, though a very good one. Having read this book right after finishing "Descent into Chaos", the difference in the depth of knowledge and details were quite obvious to me. It is also quite obvious that the book was written in a hurry as the cadence of the story line varies tremendously. Once again compared to other books like Robert Fisk's "The Great War for Civilization", I didn't get a sense of "profound" understanding of the subject matter. Nonetheless, it is still excellent reading.』

You can find out more about the causes of 9/11 from going to the web and looking up original sources. For one thing the book tries to gloss over that Palestine, the utter ugly inhumanness of the Israelis toward the Palestinians, is what drew bin Laden to Azzam (a Palestinian and founder of Hamas) his mentor. The author treats that formative association hazily, giving it not a fraction of the details he devotes to expounding on how Clinton fooling around with Monica Lewinsky deverted his attention and cost him credibility in dealing with the threat from Al Qaeda. In other words, he substitutes barely relevant circumstance for critically dealing with the fact that our support for Israel in all it's criminal features motivated 9/11 as payback. cf [...]. for a quick primer on this. Much detail about the idiosyncrasies and personalities of american intelligence people, their careers, machinations inside Pakistani and Saudi intelligence, and Massoud in Afghanistan. Really trivial in meaning for in how we ended up being attacked. Who cares that Pervez Mushareff's daughter married a filmmaker? You'll get lot's of that kind of thing. I'm sorry but a worthless book. I gave up on page 421.』
(How the CIA helped create the Taliban) 『The CIA and the Pakistan Intelligence service created the Taliban with the financial support of the Saudis. They were trained and funded by these players to drive out the Soviets from Afghanistan. The Taliban were an uneducated bunch of patriots who goal was to drive out the godless communists from their country. It is extremely interesting reading especially in light of where the US goes from here in rebuilding Afghanistan.

(Ghost Wars is terrific) 『Great book! A well researched, unbiased view of the CIA's relationship with Afghanistan's many personality's over the latter part of the twentieth century.』 『Steve Coll'sGhost Wars: The Secret History of the CIA, Afghanistan, and Bin Laden, from the Soviet Invasion to September 10, 2001offers revealing details of the CIA's involvement in the evolution of the Taliban and Al Qaeda in the years before the September 11 attacks. From the beginning, Coll shows how the CIA's on-again, off-again engagement with Afghanistan after the end of the Soviet war left officials at Langley with inadequate resources and intelligence to appreciate the emerging power of the Taliban. He also demonstrates how Afghanistan became a deadly playing field for international politics where Soviet, Pakistani, and U.S. agents armed and trained a succession of warring factions. At the same time, the book, though opinionated, is not solely a critique of the agency. Coll balances accounts of CIA failures with the success stories, like the capture of Mir Amal Kasi. Coll, managing editor for theWashington Post, covered Afghanistan from 1989 to 1992. He demonstrates unprecedented access to records of White House meetings and to formerly classified material, and his command of Saudi, Pakistani, and Afghani politics is impressive. He also provides a seeming insider's perspective on personalities like George Tenet, William Casey, and anti-terrorism czar, Richard Clarke ("who seemed to wield enormous power precisely because hardly anyone knew who he was or what exactly he did for a living"). Coll manages to weave his research into a narrative that sometimes has the feel of a Tom Clancy novel yet never crosses into excess. While comprehensive, Coll's book may be hard going for those looking for a direct account of the events leading to the 9-11 attacks. The CIA's 1998 engagement with bin Laden as a target for capture begins a full two-thirds of the way intoGhost Wars, only after a lengthy march through developments during the Carter, Reagan, and early Clinton Presidencies. But this is not a critique of Coll's efforts; just a warning that some stamina is required to keep up.Ghost Warsis a complex study of intelligence operations and an invaluable resource for those seeking a nuanced understanding of how a small band of extremists rose to inflict incalculable damage on American soil.--Patrick O'Kelley』 『From the managing editor of theWashington Post, a news-breaking account of the CIA's involvement in the covert wars in Afghanistan that fueled Islamic militancy and gave rise to bin Laden's al Qaeda.
For nearly the past quarter century, while most Americans were unaware, Afghanistan has been the playing field for intense covert operations by U.S. and foreign intelligence agencies-invisible wars which sowed the seeds of the September 11 attacks and which provide its context. From the Soviet invasion in 1979 through the summer of 2001, the CIA, KGB, Pakistan's ISI, and Saudi Arabia's General Intelligence Department all operated directly and secretly in Afghanistan. They primed Afghan factions with cash and weapons, secretly trained guerrilla forces, funded propaganda, and manipulated politics. In the midst of these struggles bin Laden conceived and then built his global organization.
Comprehensively and for the first time, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Steve Coll tells the secret history of the CIA's role in Afghanistan, from its covert program against Soviet troops from 1979 to 1989, to the rise of the Taliban and the emergence of bin Laden, to the secret efforts by CIA officers and their agents to capture or kill bin Laden in Afghanistan after 1998. Based on extensive firsthand accounts,Ghost Warsok is the inside story that goes well beyond anything previously published on U.S. involvement in Afghanistan. It chronicles the roles of midlevel CIA officers, their Afghan allies, and top spy masters such as Bill Casey, Saudi Arabia's Prince Turki al Faisal, and George Tenet. And it describes heated debates within the American government and the often poisonous, mistrustful relations between the CIA and foreign intelligence agencies.
Ghost Warsanswers the questions so many have asked since the horrors of September 11: To what extent did America's best intelligence analysts grasp the rising threat of Islamist radicalism? Who tried to stop bin Laden and why did they fail?』

(Great Value) 『This book was a big help in planning our backpack trip to India. Information was as current as I thought it could have been. I too, like other readers, took the book apart to carry only the parts we needed on this trip.』
(the worst lonely planet i've ever used) 『(This review is for the 2007 edition of this book.)
Let me start by saying it's possible that LP is still the best guidebook to use in India - it's my understanding that the other books have their shortcomings too. That being said...
I hated this travel guide. It weighs a million pounds, but it seems that 30% of its text could have been cut by a judicious editor. There is so much useless smugness, so much filler, and so many tired attempts at humor I was exasperated. I recommend you pick any page at random in the book and see for yourself all the sentences that could be cut out.
Furthermore, in many cities there were longer descriptions of the hotels than the actual sights. I'd really appreciate some information about what I went to India to see, rather than some cute commentary about the decorations in room 201 of whatever hotel. The guide invariably recommended restaurants that "serve all the backpacker favorites!!" - i.e. crappy restaurants for cheap tourists. Why on earth would you go to India--justifiably famous for its food--and eat a bad imitation of European and Israeli food? (And also why would a guidebook devote so much space to restaurants, period, at the expense of historical/cultural info, when no one is going to hunt down the tiny unmarked lanes that fill all Indian cities to find the mediocre LP-recommended place?)
The guide also had a number of errors and omissions - some really embarrassing. In Amritsar I went into a building LP said housed a museum to find bare lightbulbs hanging from the ceiling and people sleeping on the floor. Pretty sure that hadn't been a museum for years and years! I see in the new edition that this has been corrected.
The book had good basic information about sights but I can't recommend it for much else. Not sure if the other big guides (Rough Guides, Footprint) are any better.』
(I didn't receive till now the books) 『I've bought three books in the end oh september and untill now (oct 28th) I didn't receive anything. It could be because I live in Brazil and the mail service is not to fast. I hope take it soon.』
