『This is a great little computer. Really nice size. I was worried about the keyboard size - I have big hands - but so far no problems.

The battery seems to last a long time. I haven't timed it so I don't know if it actually lasts 8.5 hrs.

I really like the way the touch pad works. It's not as sensitive as some I've used and that's good for me.

I use it for reading online books from [...] by using EeeRotate [...] which allows me to rotate the screen and the touchpad 90 degrees clockwise.

Works great for checking mail and browsing the web.

The screen is very small, but that's the sacrifice for the small size.

Windows 7 Starter seems to work fine. I don't need to tweak anything for my purposes - It's not a development machine.

I was able to add a second user setup for my wife. You can't switch users, you have to logoff.

I did add the 2G memory and that made a significant difference.』

After the mandatory hour on the phone with tech support the system is considered DOA, frustration. Amazon will replace it for me much faster than ASUS.

『I bought this computer a few weeks ago, upgraded it to Windows 7 Home, and I take it with me everywhere. It's great for taking notes in class (I'm a college student) and so small I can fit it in my purse. But I don't feel that the size makes it difficult to use at all. As a matter of fact, out of all the computers I've owned or used in my life, I find this one the easiest to type on with the best accuracy. It's a great computer for internet and word processing. I would recommend it to anyone!』

(Great Computer - Not happy with Windows 7 Starter)

『I bought this computer basically for browsing the Internet and doing other minor tasks, listening to music, creating documents, watching TV and Movies etc. I haven't run any labor intensive programs yet (I've only had it for a couple days). I was going to play around with it for a while before deciding to upgrade to the 2GB RAM. So far so good. I haven't had any of the HD vibrations or excessive noise the other reviewer had. The battery life is phenomenal. I can't believe I can use a laptop this long and not have to be plugged in.

My only gripe is the Windows 7 Starter that comes installed. I have heard great things about "7" and couldn't wait to try it. For someone who likes to "play" with settings, configurations and stuff, the starter edition is not the way to go. You can't even change your desktop from the boring windows logo. I did not think about reviewing the Windows 7 Starter edition before buying. I may have to spend additional money upgrading to the Home Edition. If you are going to buy this laptop make sure Windows 7 Starter is for you.

All in all very happy with the netbook and will serve my purposes wonderfully, just wish I would have looked at Windows 7.』

(Ergonomic keyboard defeated by vibration problems)

『Asus nearly has the netbook PC perfected. The size and ergonomics of this keyboard are bar none the best among netbooks today. The wide touchpad has the right level of sensitivity as well. And Windows 7, even with the entry level Starter edition, offers much faster processing&bootup times than Windows XP does on the Intel Atom N270 processor.

However, the Asus Eee 1005HA has its achilles heel in mechanical design. The 250GB HDD has undamped vibrations that pass throughout the chassis and straight into your wrists. The fan also runs excessively. The combination creates high levels of noise and vibration compared to similar netbooks such as the Acer Aspire One D250. Also, even without Anti-Virus software running, Windows 7 and the preloaded software consume 40% of the available 1GB of memory.

Asus will undoubtedly be working out the kinks in this netbook, but many users will find the vibration and noise levels to be unacceptable, especially when other manufacturers offer netbooks without these concerns. Once Asus releases a thermally cool, vibrationless version with 2GB DDR2 memory, this netbook will be unstoppable.

Update: after exchanging for a second 1005HA, it has the exact same vibration issues. This endemic rather than a one-off dud.』

『I did a lot of research on 10.1" netbooks and this is the one which stood out to me. The size and battery life were really important and the fact that it has XP didn't hurt. The reviews on Amazon really helped also. I ordered the 2 gig memory and the leather carrying pouch sleeve at the same. The orders came separately but in a reasonable time frame. I set up the computer with the original memory but when I added the 2 gigs, it did make a noticeable difference. The leather carry pouch was great idea. It protects the computer just like a mobile phone leather carrying case does. The finger print issue is eliminated. I highly recommend it also. The computer works great but I am not sure what settings give you 9+ hours of battery life. Under normal use with normal settings I have gotten 5-6 hours. No real complaint there because as we all know these battery life claims are not realistic. There are ways to crank down the computer but you sacrifice brightness and speed. The track pad is a little sensitive and sometimes has its own mind but all manageable. All in all, it is a great little computer and I highly recommend it.』

『When we got the ASUS my wife, who this was purchased for, loved it. Then within a week after one of those ubiquitous Windows updates the backlight stopped working properly. If one powered down the computer the backlight would work for a short while and then it wouldn't. After quite sometime with ASUS customer support it was decided that the problem was in the screen and we shipped it to ASUS at our expense. It has come back to us and seems to be working fine. So now I can say my wife loves it but clearly we are not happy with having it break down right away and having to pay to ship it back to ASUS.』

(Great netbook, now running windows 7 pro)

『I've been using this netbook for around ten months now. This machine is a great value. I'm currently dual-booting Windows XP Home and Windows 7 Professional. This little netbook runs Windows 7 very well even with all the "pretties" turned on (read: Aero effects).
Here's some thoughts-
Screen- The display is fantastic. Its crisp, bright, and readable both indoors and out. The XP-only feature of changing resolution to 1024x768 is great for when you absolutely need that resolution.
Keyboard- The keyboard is also fantastic. Its comfortable and easy to use.
Battery- The battery is one of the best features on this machine. I've personally gotten 9.5 hours playing civilation III with the wifi off and screen brightness at 40%.

(Little Workhorse)

『I have had the 1000HE since May 2009. I upgraded the memory to 2GB going with the premise that more memory is always better.

Originally purchased for carrying around the house and web surfing, this netbook has been pressed into prime duty since the main household PC died a month ago. A new PC is on the Christmas list, but until then we have decided to "make do" with the netbook.

I am very impressed with the versatility of this little pc. Currently, it is hooked up to a Samsung 22 inch monitor, external hard drive, Logitech webcam, printer, external speakers and on the household wireless network. It has performed flawlessly. I have not noticed much performance degradation at all. It boots up qickly and runs great. I am sure the extra speed from the N280 processor helps as well as the memory.

The extend feature on the video lets me use the netbook's screen and drag windows over to the Samsung monitor. The 1000HE remembers where the window was so I when I open a program up, the window opens on the monitor it was last on. It is very easy to switch video resolutions for those programs which need the 1240x768 mode.

My wife and I use Skype and while the built in camera works just fine, we use an external Logitech webcam which supports a higher video feed. This netbook handles it perfectly and if there is any issues with through put, it is usually on the other end. We also run MS Office 2003 on the ASUS and it works great with that, too.

The only keyboard quirk is the shift key on the right side of the keyboard. My natural tendency is to go too far to the right and hit the arrow key, but that is just a retraining exercise for the fingers.

I am very impressed with the power of this netbook. While it does all the things I bought it for, being able to substitute for the home pc has exceeded my expectations for this computer.』

『It is very bright. I use it for previewing/reviewing HD content that I record on my Canon HV30. It hooks up with a standard HDMI cable. I have successfully used a 25' HDMI cable with my HV30 and it looks great. The monitor also plays the audio coming across the HDMI. It has a digital coaxial and 1/8" inch analog out, so you can send the signal to external audio hardware. For the price this monitor is great.』

『ASUS has always had a reputation for great products and this monitor is no exception. The display is bright, vivid, and clear. Get your input cable (VGA, DVI, or HDMI) and power cable, plug them in, and it's on. It has multiple display modes, all of which you can modify to your tastes (something I haven't done as I'm lazy and lean to having the most versatile settings for any sort of work or gaming I'm doing). When I purchased this particular monitor, it was selling for around $140 USD, and I read some reviews about how it is only decent (on a scale of horrible/lame/decent/good/great/excellent) for doing visual-based editing/creation work (meaning videos/movies, 2D/3D modeling, photo work, and whatever else I left out). After doing some light research, I believe I concur with them, but only if it's regarding any professional level work. Any hobbyist or student will be pleased enough with it.

Now there are a few annoyances with it (hence my 4 stars instead of 5), which mainly concern the options/side-features rather than the point of having a monitor (it's a display, which it does fantastically). It has an almost-fixed volume (it has built-in speakers, which produce sound like it is coming from behind the LCD screen itself). There are two buttons on the front to adjust the volume, which are horrible for adjusting it from blasting to quiet or vice versa. You can barely make out the adjustment buttons on the bottom right corner of the monitor in the dark, so you need an additional light source other than the monitor to see them enough. The volume is on a scale of 0-100 (like most), and the auto-adjustment (holding down up/down) is slower than just rapidly pressing them over and over again. I should be slightly more clear on this: the numbers change, but the volume itself seems to be reluctant to change with the numbers (if it was at 75, turning it down isn't noticeable until 50, at least significantly, and vice versa). A dial would have been much better. Now the sound quality is good, but some $30-50 USD pair of 2.1 channel speakers (or higher) would do much better. Another disappointing side-feature was that there wasn't a built-in USB hub. Not required, but a good majority of LCD monitors have them as a common feature. The last one is that the screen is a matte finish, not a glossy finish. Depending on who you are, this is a good or a bad thing. I personally find matte finishes annoying, as they're slightly harder to clean without leaving streaks (a bit of a neat freak).

All in all, it's a great monitor for most people. For those who want extras in addition to a display, go digging around a little more in Amazon (or wherever else) for one. There are a bunch that will have what you are after around $140 USD. Lastly, for that little niche of people, save your money and buy one that's $250 USD or more for your really clear and exemplary display.』
