『This is an interesting product for tinkerers (for whom it offers a number of attractive options at a relatively low price). For everybody else it is a nightmare:

1. ASUS' rebate system is terrible: the web registration process is arcane and seems to be designed with only one goal in mind: to prevent the customer from getting a rebate.

2. The firmware on the router is unbelievably bad and user-unfriendly. It just plain does not work (especially the part that concerns the USB port). No customer support is available.

3. Installing third party firmware (such as the excellent OpenWRT distribution) requires significant expertise and is not for the faint of heart.

Now about the value of this router for the DIY crowd. It is pretty good, if you install OpenWRT, you can write your own software for it and create a number of interesting projects with it. The fly in the ointment is the fact that it uses a Broadcom CPU which makes it impossible to update the kernel to 2.6 and take full advantage of USB 2.0. So if you want a nice open platform from a company that cares about creative types, choose something with an Atheros chip in it from someone other than ASUS.

If you want something that `just works' and is `easy to setup', avoid this router like a plague.』

『I do not believe this is a first time router. If you have never setup a router before I would probably go with a Linksys or Netgear. Or if you are confident you do not need support from Asus to set it up out of box, then I would get it.

It is VERY easy to setup with the browser setup, but Asus *support* is lackluster. Their website is slow or unresponsive at times or may not even come up (blank page). The customer service reps are very nice and professional, but I found a few to not know the products I call in for and feel they are reading off a script.

That being said, I love this router. I run dd-wrt on it as well and it rock solid. The default firmware seems good and probably works for the general public perfectly fine. DD-wrt allows me to run a print, web, and nas server off a usb hub connected to the usb port. Seems well designed / ventilated because it runs no where near burning hot like a Netgear router I have. The range works great and I see no problems in my two story townhome with any connectivity issues. Matter of fact I see 5 out of 5 bars while I'm one story above the router on the second floor on my laptop.』

(Print server function is crap)
『I bought this router so I could share my printer on my network. I didn't realize that I needed to check the list of supported printers (should have read previous feedback). The list of supported printers is very small and none of the 3 printers that I own are on the list. It's useless to me since I bought is for the print server function.』

(Flash it with DD-WRT)
『I don't know much about the OEM firmware because I immediately flashed DD-WRT onto it. DD-WRT is well documented, easy to use and trivial to install on this router from a windows computer. I use this in my room as a wireless repeater/bridge which allows me to log on to the wireless network without configuring a wireless card (which can be a pain with linux) as well as increase the range of my network. This router also has a usb port so the memory can be expanded for use as Network Attached Storage (NAS), as a lite weight web server or as a print server. The only cons are I have to reboot the thing approximately every three months and the onboard memory is a bit lacking for something at this price.』

『I've had this router for about six months now. I installed a 3rd-party firmware on it (search for "Tomato ND" or "DD-Wrt", it was surprisingly easy) and it's been running nonstop, without reboot ever since. Connections are stable (with about 5-6 clients over WPA), range is sufficient (for my small apartment anyway), transfer speeds are good; in short, everything works great. I couldn't be happier -- especially since I got this on sale. :)』

『Put simply, I really like this machine! I live in a remote village on Kodiak Island, and needed a laptop that would be easy to travel with. After reading every review I could find, and after learning about ASUS' good reliability rating, a real plus up here, I ordered one. It arrived quickly and undamaged in transit.
Setup was painless and there was almost no crapware. I've been using it every day for two months and am almost completely satisfied. Keyboard flex, a common criticism, I found to be a non-issue. The speakers are clear and sufficiently loud even at a middle setting - important for us geezers. My only gripe is with the touchpad: it is necessary to bear down on it more than I like. Dragging is sometimes clumsy. Battery life is impressive. I haven't run the battery out yet, even watching DVDs.
I like the long warranty, the appearance, and the "travelability" . I give it 4 1/2 stars - half a star off for the touchpad. Ioasaph

Pros: A mobile laptop. Light weight. Great Screen LED is Nice. Full keyboard although its a 15"er. Modern CPU that gives you enough speed without sucking all the juice of the battery. Gets you 5+ hours . Discrete Graphics Card. 4 GB of DDR 3. Runs some games. Not Cluttered with 3rd Party Software. Asus programs are helpful. Windows 7 is better that Vista ! Claims to have a 2 year warranty.

Cons: 1) Integrated Mouse Button is bad. Its a stiff button. 2) It doesn't bother me but I could see other picky people be bothered by the Gloss finish; it does get smudgy easily.

Overall I like this computer. Hardware wise its worth every cent. It was exactly what I was looking for with the right price. I probably changed laptops every 6 months for the past 2 years because I couldn't find a good fit for me. This one might be the laptop I will stay with for a while. It sucks that Asus got everything right except the mouse and the gloss finish, in my opinion.

『I just received this computer last week. The ul80vt model was sold out, so I opted for the larger ul50 vt. Th touchpad takes some getting used to and is certainly an annoyance sometimes, but as a student the draw for me was the long battery life.

EVEN ON THE MOST POWER SAVING SETTINGS THIS BATTERY ONLY GETS 6 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE. For this, I could have spent 60% of the money and purchased an acer. Asus has not been responsive about this problem and I am thinking of taking the 15% hit and returning the computer to Amazon. If this is indicative of their customer service I do not want 2 years of this.

The power saving settings make the colors look very washed out and ugly.

it's a pretty machine if you get all that Asus says you should. If not, there are less expensive options with better quality cameras and touchpads.』

『I ordered this last summer after my girlfriend's roommate's dog decided to use my original charger as a chew toy. At the time, I was in a hurry and did not thoroughly research this purchase.I thought I was getting a genuine Asus charger, which wasn't the case. At any rate, it arrived and seemed to work fine (even though it did indeed have a straight male adapter as opposed to the right-angle one shown in the image).

Last month I was sitting in my usual spot (the dining room table) when I heard a pop and fizzle come from the adapter. The green LED slowly faded away. As I sat in silence, mourning the death of my gadget, the familiar smell of burning plastic and metal reached my nose. It was obvious that something shorted inside of the adapter.

Needless to say, I will be trying to find an official Asus charger now. Something I should have done in the first place.』

『After 6 months, my original charger stopped working and I bought this one. I noticed it was lighter, and seemed to be more cheaply made than the original one.

The first time I used it, everything was ok until I tried to turn my netbook on again after shutting it down. It was unresponsive. I plugged it back into the old charger, which still worked intermittently and left it there over night. When I woke up, I noticed the battery charging light was on, so I turned it on and it worked.

Over the next day I tried to decide if the new charger was to blame and for whatever reason I started using it again. Once more, everything worked fine until I shut down and tried to start up again. My netbook is dead. It's been weeks, I have plugged it in to both chargers, in outlets across the house. It's over.

『I received this net book a few weeks ago and absolutely love it! I am required to have some sort of laptop for school and after A LOT of research (and toting around a very heavy outdated laptop) I settled on this Asus net book for a few reasons. First of which is the battery life. Compared to other net books in the same price range this one has way more battery life. After using it for awhile I can safely say that I have yet to run the battery dead (and I'm in class and work for 9 hours or more).

Second is the size and weight. While 10 inches is small to alot of people, the screen is actually a great size, not too small (as I thought the 8 inch ones were) and not so big. This computer is small enough to drop into a backpack or large purse without any trouble and is light enough to carry around all day (it's lighter than a lot of leisure books).

Another thing I love is the keyboard. It's comfortable to type and the keys are normal size. The touch pad is great, you can turn it off if you have a mouse to use with it and the zoom feature it has makes reading some of those teeny tiny print web pages that much easier to use.

My only concern is the pin on the charger, it is quite small and could break easily if the cord gets tugged. I've been charging at night to avoid any kind of breakage in the pin.

I also bought 2 GB memory and put it in immediately. It makes the net book even faster.

I would recommend this to anyone who is in the market for a fast, easy-to-use net book. Great job Asus!』

『I was planning to take an international trip in September of 2009 and didn't want to lug my "full sized" 14" HP laptop on the airplane for a 9 hour flight. I also was concerned about running out of battery life on such a long trip. So, after much research I ordered this netbook with the 9 cell battery. I also ordered an extra 2gb of memory to avoid potential problems with software I intended to install. As, soon as I received the package I opened the box and installed the memory. I then charged the unit and began using it. After about 3 days I tested the battery life by taking an overnight trip without the charger. I was able to use the netbook for normal activities (not constant use) and return the next day with time left on the battery. I've found that there's really no need to turn this unit off. I simply close the lid and the power comsumptions goes down to a trickle. That way I avoid going through the startup process. I installed several applications I normally use on my full sized notebook including Firefox, Nikon NX2, Microsoft Project 2007, Nikon Picture Project, Mindmanager, Avast antivirus, iTunes, Zune and a couple of others. None of these had any problems working on the netbook. It's important to remember that this machine is not designed to multitask so it's one function at a time or you going to see lags in the operations. You can open multiple apps, but you can only use one at at time. When I download updates with iTunes I turn simultaneous downloads off. The wireless 802.11n is very fast downloading faster than my full sized laptops which have 802.11g. My one complaint it that the outside of the unit is dark blue and collects finger prints immediately after cleaning. I keep a microfiber cloth in the bag just to wipe it down. I only recharge the unit at night and even then, not if I haven't used it more than 3 or 4 hours. All in all a great choice.』

『I love the size and battery life of this netbook! I did not realize that you don't really get a full screen type view so you have to do a fair amount of paging up and down. The built in mouse bar is a little stiff so your hands get tired after long use. Still working on figuring out how to connect with my existing laptop to share files and load software that you cannot download. (not straight forward?)

The portability is great and beats carrying around a 5-6lb laptop!』

『I bought an Asus Eee 701 about a year after it came out, and grew to love it like a faithful pet. It was far more flexible than a smartphone and much smaller than a laptop, and it was also a babe-magnet. But I eventually got fed up with the small screen and the limited battery life. I had to carry a high-capacity spare and constantly keep an eye on the remaining power. Asus came out with a confusing array of replacement models, and the 1005HA appears to be the best modern combination of value and performance (there's a 1008HA, which is thinner but has a non-removable battery, and there's also a pair of larger 1201 models which seem to overlap uncomfortably with conventional laptops).

I've had mine for about a week now. Compared to the 701 it has a conventional magnetic hard drive, split into two 80gb partitions; a larger, higher-resolution screen; and much longer battery life. It takes the same memory modules, and indeed I swapped the 2gb chip in my 701 for the 1gb chip in my 1005HA with no problems. Physically, the hinge feels slightly less robust, and the body is proportionately heavier than the 701 (the battery, in contrast, is surprisingly lightweight). It's still hand-holdable but not as comfortable.

Good stuff: the screen is 1024x600, not quite a conventional resolution but enough for most purposes. The battery life is very impressive, far inside my comfort threshold. If you commute on the train for an hour and a half each way, and use it to surf the internet whilst doing so, and you use it at lunchtime and a bit in the afternoon, it should last a couple of days before you have to charge it. The 701 would have conked out during lunch. In practice you would have kept turning it off and on in short bursts and worrying about the battery. You can just leave the 1005HA on, and worry about other things. Although the batteries are large, they aren't very heavy, and so a couple of them should last a long aeroplane journey. The 701's only advantage in this respect is that it can comfortably be used if you're standing up, whereas the 1005HA is a bit too large for that.

As with the 701 it has an SD card reader, which is useful if you have a digital SLR that takes SD cards. It's less relevant than the 701's SD card slot, given that the machine has a 160gb hard drive; with the 701, the SD card stood in for the hard drive. You don't need it any more.

The keyboard is a revelation. The 701's keyboard was an uncomfortable hunt-and-peck thing with a misplaced right shift key. The 1005HA's keyboard has a full-sized right shift key and it's in the right place. I can touch type easily on it. The cursor keys are initially odd but the arrangement works. The power adapter is slightly smaller. Everything else that was good about the 701 is good about this.

Bad stuff: I'm not enthused with the touchpad. It's flush with the case, differentiated by some studs. It doesn't feel as precise as the 701's keypad, even after a week of acclimatisation. The screen surround attracts hairs and dust like a vacuum cleaner. I miss the absolute solid state silence of the 701. It's slightly less of a babe magnet, because it's larger. You don't get the carry case that came with the 701 (boo!) or indeed any carry case. In all other respects it is win city.

The only substantive criticism I can level is philosophical. The 701 had a definite niche. It was much much smaller than a laptop and far more flexible than a smartphone. It felt fresh and new. The 1005HA, on the other hand, is not much more portable than a small laptop, and in fact it's thicker and heavier than some laptops. I'm slightly more wary of carrying it around, slightly less willing to put it in the luggage, slightly less willing to use it in public. I could carry the 701 around easily with one hand, snap it open, surf the internet etc, snap it closed, stuff it into a backpack etc, whereas the 1005HA is more cumbrous. For a machine that only makes sense as a mobile device this is a bit worrying. Still, the extra battery life alone is a killer upgrade and if you sell your 701 to fund the upgrade the price is even more impressive.

『The unit is not very reliable. The tablet portion stopped working the first day into the special project that I purchased it for. By the second day, the entire unit had stopped working and would not even turn on. I was several hundred miles from home and had to use a backup unit that I had bought along with me.

It has been returned to ASUS for repair or replacement. Hopefully they will satisfy me with their repair service. Time will tell.』

『We ordered the netbook T91 on October 13, 2009, and it has been in their repair center since. When we first received it, the stylus scratched the screen the first time it was used. We shipped it to the repair center and got it back a couple of days later to find that the power switch would not work. It would not even turn on! We sent it back to the repair center and haven't seen it since. They are already having to change out parts to a brand new netbook that was used once. We paid nearly $500.00 for it, and it is already needing new parts. There is obviously something wrong with it. Could it possibly be a lemon? They will not send us a new one. If we ever get it back, and something goes wrong again, we are contacting the BBB and a lawyer. I would not recommend ever purchasing anything from them.』

『The ASUS T91 is a great notebook. It is lightweight and easy to operate. I am a home inspector and use it on all my home inspections. It is a little slow but works great for my applications. I carry the T71 throughout the home as I do my inspections and this eliminates the need to centrally locate the computer which saves time..』

『I read about this net book long before it was released and really looked forward to it. Having bought it im a little disappointed. First off its just too slow for the touch interface to function properly. The shift and enter keys are very poorly placed. The touch pad doesn't work very well, it occasionally thinks you are trying to do something else than move the cursor. If you use the touch pad to write there is no "interpolations" i.e. your writing looks like you wrote it in paint. All in all they should have held off on this till they had improved it a little but on the upside you do get a lot of features for a low price. I especially appreciate the ss-hdd and Bluetooth. I almost rate it 3 out of 5 but everything considered I would not recommend it.』
