『These speakers look cool and have easy plug in. I have a Mac-Pro. The speakers have no volume control, no bass and mediocre sound quality. Honestly, they should be maybe [...] bucks at best. The only thing they are useful for is that they can be turned towards you, and that gives it a louder sound. Todays laptops don't have speakers that can be put into a vertical position and that sometimes makes for less loud of a volume, especially when watching a movie or such and the lap top is 5 feet away. Overall, i feel that my Mac's speakers have a better equalizer.』

(Does not work with Toshiba laptops)

(JLAP C-media usb speakers finally working on Linux ubuntu - Intrepid 8.10)

『I don't feel I've been ripped off. Until I worked on integrating these speakers into my system, I've been in love with ubuntu Linux. But now, my enthusiasm is less because this task shouldn't have been so difficult. I found it extremely hard but bottom line, I do have them working. The volume is great, a million percent better than my pc speakers. Yes, the base could be improved but for the price, I find it better than acceptable.

I'll document here in case it helps someone else:

Note: not sure this is the right order but the end result of this for my system was successful - may be some reboots necessary between steps..

1. confirm that Pulseaudio volume control and Pulseaudio meter control is installed - (go to pull down menu for Applications, then add/remove, then search for pavumeter and pavucontrol - if not installed, then install)
2. double click on "master applet" (mine looks like a microphone in upper right corner- single click will get you only volume increase or decrease- need to double click)
3. select "c-media usb audio device (alsa mixer) from the list in the pull down at the top of the box
FYI - I know that my speaker was "C-Media" by entering following command from a terminal session:

4. start pulse audio device chooser in pulldown under Applications/sound
5. select preferences in chooser and then check box for "start applet on session login"
6. (this is most important step to do!) modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base by commenting out "options usb snd audio index=-2 i.e. insert "#" at beginning of line (this line was preventing the usb speaker from becoming the default)
7. click on system pull down menu, then preferences/sound and click on devices tab, then set or confirm that:
a. "Sound events - sound playback - says "c-media..."
b. "Music and movies - sound playback - says "c-media..."
c. confirm both fields under Audio Conferencing say "pulseaudio server"
d. confirm that "Default Mixer Tracks" says "c-media..."
8. Note: need to reboot (now is good time if not rebooted yet) at some point after the file in modprobe.d directory changed and before you can increase volume on usb speakers in next steps
9. click on pulseaudio applet (mine is in a tray at the top of my screen)
10. select volume control
11. select playback
12. then adjust volume by sliding bar - this was point that my speaker(s) began working properly

『My laptop speakers were never very loud. Often I couldn't hear any type of live broadcast. This has good volume and works fine. No issues, maybe a bit "tinny" sounding but not unusual for something this small. Convenient, easy to use.』

(Wrong Driver Utility Disk)

『When I used the disks to reload the computer to factory condition as it was so full of bloatware and i put in a new 7200 drive, and the installation stopped half way as it says the "Does not match this model" when i am prompted to insert the driver disk.
It says g17gx up there but on the computer it says gi7g. Asus customer support has yet to call back. Anyone know what is going on? Does the computer have some unauthentic parts? Ir syas Nvidia 260m but when you get the driver from Nvidia it says not the right model for this driver?
Now I have a computer with none of the features I paid for. It would be easy for Asus to get me the right driver utility. It was a really nice computer at first now it is not. If they can get me the right utility so I can resore the system to how it was I would be happy.
I have found nothing anywhere about a simular problem.
The Asus forum has nothing related to this problem.
Make sure you get what you paid for and make sure the driver disk is the right one for the model.』

『The laptop is quick and arrived in perfect shape. The only machine complaints I have are the bloatware that you have to uninstall (common on notebooks) and the keys seem to double strike fairly often when typing (compared to others, not a deal-breaker by any means) resulting in a star reduction. However, I deducted another star because of the reseller failing to note that the refurbished condition means that one does not qualify for the Asus Windows 7 free upgrade program and refusing to answer emails about said problem, not even to say it's your problem. It's not so much that I didn't get the upgrade considering the great price, but one is left with a bad taste in your mouth with Amazon shoppers should be wary when dealing with J&R Music and Electronics.』

『I bought this DVD player for my Dell Inspiron Netbook. The drive is very sturdy. It is much sturdier than most drives that are installed in most pcs today. The Dell Netbook version of Windows Media Player that I had did not have the codec I needed to operate this drive. My netbook would not download a newer version of Media player due to some system configuration issue. I downloaded the freeware Standard version of VLC media player and all worked perfectly. This drive has convinced me that I actually prefer external drives for laptops.』
