The animation is so beautiful, not anything like what you see normally. It's soft and pretty realistic. No bright, flashy colors that blind you or make the people and scenery look plasticlike. The story is beautiful. There's suspense and times at which you think all hope is lost. In the end, true love (not la-la, lovey dovey love, but true love where the boy and girl love each other MORE than they love themselves.) The music is lovely. The dancing's spectacular. I love this movie and I HIGHLY reccomend it! If you're expecting a gushy, over-sugary movie where girls in frilly dresses skip merrily through fields picking flowers and singing, you're in for a WONDERFUL surprise! This movie is TOTALLY worth every penny you pay.』

『I got this for my 7 year old daughter. She thinks boys have cooties at this age. Especially her brothers.

I did take away one star for the "girl hug" comment because I thought it probably went a little too far in a movie that is geared towards a younger crowd. It was okay, though, because it went WAY over her head.

However, hormones weren't the only message. What I liked was the message that the popular kids were only popular because they said nasty things about each other. I liked that Barbie learned that the hunky guy on the rebound wasn't the boy who made her feel the best deep down in her heart. I liked that Barbie wrote down her wishes and made them come true.

I got this movie yesterday afternoon. My daughter has already watched this movie three times. She dug through her stuff to find her charm bracelet and has been scribbling in a notebook all day long.』

『I have to admit, I love this movie for a movie. The animation is awesome, the story is sweet, and the soundtrack rocks. But.......
The girls all dress immodestly. Call me old-fashioned, but midriff-baring tops, too-short skirts, and shirts that show cleavage aren't appropriate. Of course, this movie is animated, so you don't really see the cleavage you would in real life. Second, I didn't like the way teachers and principals were shown in a negative manner. Third, I have something to ask Mattel: WHY ON EARTH DID YOU HIRE SKYE SWEETNAM?!?!?!?!? I thought she was awesome. I watched the special feature about her, and...she's dressed like some streetwalker! Still, I wanted to give her a fair shot. So I went to her website and checked out her albums. I didn't get past Noise From the Basement. I didn't even get past the first four songs! They are filled to overflowing with curse words and obscenities. They are explicit and horrible, and she talks about hopping into bed with a boy as if it were perfectly natural. Skye, I'm praying for you.』

I just think that all the other Barbie Movies were in a fantasy world teaching lessons with a strong female figure (my children new it was a fantasy world but the lessons were deep). This dealt with petty issues. Barbie should have been out doing service work not getting involved with the gossip of high school. Even when you are in high school there is still a big world out there.』

『I liked the movie. I thought it was movingly sincere and beautifully sullen. The soundtrack is great and includes some of the best songs of the eighties. It brought back a lot of memories. I was young. As I entered my teens, this music was still very popular.

Unfortunately, through the early nineties, alternative, pop and grunge took precedence on the radio, at least in NYC.

Many of these artists had a couple of hits throughout the eighties. That can't dismiss their importance. These are great songs.

(Freightfully Honest)
『To me, watching this movie is like watching a friend coming out on the screen.... It's believable and it's painful because of that. If I considered The Line of Beauty to be an excellent movie that speaks a broader "gay experience", then Edge of Seventeen is a film that speaks to me at a more intimate level.

Now here's the review of the movie. The movie is about a guy called Eric (played by Chris Stafford) who is in a sexual confusion which eventually hurt people who care about him and foremost, himself. Despite growing up in the 90's, I think many of the growing pain of a homosexual man is still relevant (but given the feedback from some reviews, apparently kids from 2000's aren't going through the same sort of pain as before). Eric has gone through a lot of stuff I can relate to: expressing himself through fashion and hairdo, feeling lost, enduring indignation with silence (what else could you do?), looking for love from both genders (but only going back to feel lost again). The movie nailed every important subjects in the process of coming to term of finding self.

To those who couldn't find the point of the movie, let me offer this: not everyone can go to one of his parents and just say "Mom, I'm gay" without a long process in between. I don't see the movie as a gay man trying to find love kind of movie, but a movie about a man's process of finding the real him. Things like experimenting on hair style, putting on make up, going to gay bar, sleeping with guys, sleeping with his best female friend (!)..., etc., were all small details that eventually built up to the final conclusion.

I personally feel The Edge of Seventeen to be a very frank story that deserves to be noticed, but Strand Releasing (the publisher of this DVD) did a terrible job at market placement, I think. I avoided this film because I had judged the movie by its cover.... However, it turned out to be much better than expected. Like another reviewer mentioned, one may think this is an uplifting movie, but it's not.... I am guessing Strand probably believed marketing the movie this way may boost sale, but it pleases no one. Honesty sells. This is not a pastel colored love story, but a brutally honest coming out story, so why disappoint someone who was looking for a Friday fun and turn someone who was looking for a serious love story? Target the customer correctly, please.

To Strand's credit, they generally publish good quality movies. This and The Mudge Boy both offer stellar acting performance with strong scripts. Chris Stafford should win an award for his role. The script is believable and honest. I didn't expect a good movie when I first started, but it ended up making me insomniac that night because it reached that deep pocket of my life that I thought I had long forgotten.

『This was a very good movie, I have seen all of writer/producer Todd Stephen's films, and I seen them in the opposite order they were made. I seen Another Gay Movie, Gypsy 83, and then Edge of 17. I have to say this film left me wanting to see more and at the end if it would have just been 20 minutes longer, but even if it were i'd probably still say if it had been longer. It is one of those movies you hate to see end, also the ending itself was one of those that you have to sort of quess what you think may happen. I hope that writer todd stephens gets back to writing more movies like this. It had a great cast... love Andersen Gabrych, and Chris Stafford. Hope to see them in another one of stephens films. Overall the film is worth watching. people my age may not like the music becasue it was made to be in the 80's. However, the time may be different but the theme is still the same.』

『This movie, I'm sure, was very beneficial and insightful to MANY gays coming out in 1987. This movie also proves that there are two main types of gays and it is really difficult, painful, complex and unnerving when those two types of gays come together; moreover, the harsh reality of a family's typical reaction--independent of how a gay may be categorized--in particular, the mother. Given that this movie achieves a wonderful depiction of the truths of the gay community, this movie is still very relevant today. I was not conscious of the fact that this movie was done more than 20 years ago...well, I must admit, you can't really be oblivious to Eric's Boy George-like, 80's punk look! lol :) Albeit, this is the qunitessential "coming out" movie. This movie does a very nice job of portraying the typical struggles of a gay guy in Eric's situation without over-indulging in some of the more profound aspects of the story; ergo, a drawn-out, almost unbelievable film. It also, I believe, evokes thoughts for young gays that are [hopefully] conducive to the establishment of tenets of the gay community. Some examples of these tenets would be: not to be promiscuous (as it is asinine and totally unsafe), don't judge others--as you don't want anyone judging you, never love under any pretense--thus it isn't love in the first place, accept change--you must eventually do this if you are to be comfortable and strong in being gay. Suffice it to say, I adored--no, simply TREASURE this film!! :)』

『This video is the second in a series called "Barbie Fairytopia." My daughter (turning 5) has loved the movies for a year now. I love them because they depict Barbie as a strong, independent girl who solves each crisis she meets independently, without the help of a prince or any other "handsome young man." She makes friends with the boys she meets, and has other wonderful friends in the stories, but she pretty much "saves the day" by herself. A great lesson for young girls everywhere! it's also a beautifully made movie, filled with extremely colorful scenes and characters.』

『My 3-year-old daughter has many Barbie DVDs...some are better than others...but this is our favorite by far! I'm actually quite surprised that I am the first to review this particular Barbie movie! The songs are very catchy (believe me, they get stuck in your head), the story is sweet, and the characters are adorable. Every element that is attractive to little girls is in this movie: singing, dancing, best friends, food fights, clothes, guitar playing, puppies, castles, cute boys, and of course the obligatory evil "witch" and her dragon. The "medieval/renaissance" theme is also a winner with my daughter. Her other favorite Barbie franchise movie is Barbie in Rapunzel, which is also excellent!』

My other daugther's friend watched it when she was 3 1/2 yrs old and was a bit scared by the bad guys (in particular the dragon) but my toddler was never.』

(Ah Well, the Kids Love It...)
『I am astonished at all the adults writing glowing reviews of Barbie movies! I can only think that the adults who rate them highly love them because the kids they love adore the movies. These movies are plasticky drawn animated characters (like Barbie herself, I suppose) that are so without any facial expression that it's creepy, the lyrics and music are painfully sophmoric, and the dialogue and stories are mind-numbingly cliched.

This movie in particular has the added annoyance of the usually wonderful Tim Curry (a real Brit) overacting and actually sounding like he's doing a bad British accent a creepy ogre, and two playah male characters that have jilted lovers in their town. Ick.

That said, my 6 year old and even the 1 1/2 year-old love these movies and they're harmless enough. But you can't call these exceptional for any reason. They're bland time-killers for the kids.

I love to sit down and watch movies with my kids, so I appreciate any movie that's at least watchable. Like the Disney classics as well as the new ones they're making (Disney seems to be undergoing another renaissance), as well as ANYTHING made by Pixar, and SOME of the Dreamworks films. For simpler films, we've enjoyed National Geographic Kids, and some PBS shows on DVD like Jakers.
