(A Must Have for Fans of American Idol Season 8) 『I just picked up a copy of this CD yesterday, and I love it. It includes both Kris Allen and Adam Lambert's versions of No Boundaries, as well as one studio track from each of the Top 10 contestants. I caution people not to waste their money ordering from the online sellers however. This item is a Walmart exclusive, and can be picked up at your local Walmart store for $10. So why pay $18.75 or $21 something plus shipping if you don't have to? If you pick it up at your local Walmart check for the Season 8 5 song ep as well. This EP is $5 and includes the duets from the Top 4 as well as a track from each of the Top 3 contestants. Both are a must have for any Idol fan.』 『Season 8 of American Idol had its share of great performances, stellar highs, and stunning surprises. Singer Justin Thompson whose jazz gem Brand New Same Old Obsessions totally knocked me out said this was one of his favorite bands, which brought me to it. I can certainly see the attraction. The music is original and bubbles with a classic feeling. "Rally" keeps varying the pace from the verse to bridge to the delightful chorus, "Don't you give me those shifty eyes, pay attention, dirty talk talk talk, quiet." "Long Distance Call" crosscuts a lovely melody with the repetition of the lyric that becomes title to the set. "Courtesy Laughs," the instrumental "North"&"Sometimes in the Fall" are also favorite cuts. Phoenix's delightful pop is original and sets a chronic smile on my face. Enjoy!』
(WOW) 『This CD is absolutely incredible. Phoenix has instantly become my favorite band. This CD coupled with Alphabetical are just amazing.』
(shockingly perfect pop) 『I dont know how they exactly did it but this band crafted a nearly perfect gem of pop songs. There's some punk and 80's influences but the band makes music that certainly stands on its own. There's also a mature sense of irony in several of the songs that makes replays of the CD fun if you're older than 16. Very impressive singing in a "rock/pop" style. The studio mixing brings out the strengths of the band.』
(Phoenix Destroyed My Car Stereo) 『I bought this C.D. for my birthday. Tried to load it into my car stereo and it it ended up jamming the unit and then it died.
So while the C.D. was only $8.00 it will cost me hundreds to fix the car stereo. I blame the record manufacturers for putting in some type anti-copy protection which screwed up the unit.
Therefore this is a must to avoid if you care about your equipment.』
(Oh Pheonix!) 『These guys never get it wrong. The second I heard this I got the words "its never been like that, its never been like that" running through my head non-stop (especially since it IS in the refrain of track #4). Pheonix is a French band with weird words, a lovely voice, and some nifty tunes. Pheonix is easy listening, yet catchy as heck, pop, yet still rock. They hold a delicate balance between smooth and sexy. But I must admit, for most Phenox is a guilty pleasure, you enjoy it until you actually try to understand the lyrics then find out that you are not crazy and that the lyics dont actually make sense. But you still heavily enjoy the music anyway and sing along. You must buy this album, or any Pheonix album!』 『Warning: Even limited exposure to this French band's music is liable to turn the listener into a crazed zealot desperate to "just turn people on" to their music or to wander about aimlessly wondering aloud why they're not at least as well known as, say, Erlend Oye. The band's been relentlessly eclectic since they formed in the late '90s; they make hybrid music, an electronic-flavored rock that's impossible to describe without using up half a dozen hyphens in the process. It's their most straight-ahead, "rock"-sounding release, and if your first thought is that it wouldn't hurt ifIt's Never Been Like Thathad a little bit more of a cocaine disco unicorn vibe to it, give it another listen. This record is an effortless-sounding, mini-masterpiece that mixes art song elements with delightful retro-pop. And it's scary how simply and truly great it is--easily amongst the best albums of 2006.--Mike McGonigal』 『Third album from French indie rock band, who rose to prominence when their track, 'Too Young' (from their debut album, United), was featured on the soundtrack to 'Lost In Translation'. (Magnifico!) 『After hearing Kristin Chenoweth in Wicked, I couldn't resist trying this out. I wasn't disappointed. Kristen has a light soprano voice and shamelessly shows off her operatic training. Her style suits Broadway perfectly and this album is a gem. I love it. A collection of well and lesser known (to me at least) hits, with enough variety to use her versatility. Before I heard this I thought no one would be able to do "How long has this been going on" like Ella, but hey, I was wrong! Great dialogue and perfect timing.
Maybe Kristin could come to the land of Oz one day? Sydney v New York? No contest!

(amazing breadth) 『Kristen is a complicated person. She is attractive, gifted and a sense of humor no to be met. This album showcases all those attributes. It is beautiful and humerous.I can't wait to hear more of her in years to come. Her potential is unlimited. I would like to see a few more pop classics from her. This album you can play over and over and not get bored.A++++』
(A must for fans of the genre.) 『This is the perfect showcase for the multitalented vocalist. She pays compliments to standards, and makes a few unknown songs all her own.』
(Great singer and actress all in one) 『The first time I saw Kristin Chenoweth in a movie was the TV "Music Man". Just lately I listened to the "Wicked" soundtrack, and after that, I've been listening to Kristin's CDs whenever I can. This one is a jazzy, Broadway-type CD with fun, engaging songs. She's a different type of singer, and while not everyone might enjoy her voice, I really do. If you like Broadway, jazz, drama, romance, or just fun, catchy songs, this is a CD for you.』 『Kristin Chenoweth won a Tony for the supporting role of Sally Brown in the 1999 revival ofYou're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, made a memorably vampy Lily in the 1999 television film ofAnnie, and had an NBC sitcom created for her,Kristin! Now she grabs the spotlight inLet Yourself Go, her first solo recording. She mixes torchy standards ("My Funny Valentine," "How Long Has This Been Going On?") with Faith Prince-style sauciness ("If"), gets to show off her operatic and scat chops in the miniplay "The Girl in 14G," and shares a light duet with Jason Alexander (reviving his musical theater career post-Seinfeld). Perhaps her "Stranger Here Myself" isn't the weightiest you've ever heard, but this is an enjoyable album with a good deal of old-fashioned class, expertly accompanied by Rob Fisher and the Coffee Club Orchestra.--David Horiuchi』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (THE LUSTY MEN.....not on DVD?) 『This rodeo movie predates Junior Bonner (1952)&stars Robert Mitchum, Susan Hayward&George Kennedy (no slouches there!). It is an excellent script (based on the book of the same name)&is extremely well acted. In my opnion te best rodeo movie ever made. It is readily available on DVD in England, yet in the US it can only be found on used VHS. ??? There is something wrong here!』 『Set amidst the colorful excitement of America's most famous rodeos, The Lusty Men vividly depicts the dramatic story of two rival rodeo champions - one on the rise, the other on the wane - both in love with the same high-spirited woman. When asked to break in a promising young cowboy for the rodeo circuit, a hardbitten rodeo tramp reluctantly agrees, although skeptical about the boy's talent. The decision sets the stage for a powerful story of the modern West, and the tough, temporary cowboys who play out their showdowns in the dust and thrills of rodeo arenas.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Great Aggie Flick) 『This is a great movie for all Texas Aggies and Aggie fans. While it is most properly labeled as a war propaganda B-movie, it nevertheless shows a great deal of the Aggie spirit and life on the Texas A&M campus during World War II. When I was a student there (1963-1967), the film was shown each year at Guion Hall, the theater on campus, and I went every time to see it again.
I gave it a 5-star rating because I am heavily biased--I admit it and make no apologies for it.
For several years I had a VHS of this movie, but it is now available in DVD. Stores on the A&M campus have it available for purchase, so if you're interested, please check it out and see for yourself. Although the A&M of yesteryear as many people knew it has changed dramatically, its legacy lives on. A&M produced more military officer in World War II than did West Point, so that should give some idea of A&M's reputation and service.

The turnaround in both occur (well somewhat the love more than golf, for the risk taker in him persists) with a local psychologist taking lessons in golf, while she gives him lessons in love and mental skills.
The acting by lead characters is good, esp. Cheech. There is too much f** words and other language in this for this reviewer, and I know before it's said it's only my opinion and it is.
The soundtrack is superb, which I bought and play often since watching this on big screen first. Interesting plot and well done cinematography.
Not my favorite golf flick, but not in bottom third either. Somewhere in middle.』
(Tin Cup) 『I wasn't to thrilled with this movie I'm a Christian and all the cussing and sexual inuendo ruined it for me.』

(Tin Cup) 『I never got to watch the dvd. When I received the dvd it was scratched and I was unable to watch the movie.』
(Good but a little slow) 『The product was exactly like what I ordered. My only small complaint is that it took a long time for me to get (over 2 weeks, close to 3).』 『An unreachable shot to the green. A hopeless romance. Driving-range pro Roy McAvoy can't resist an impossible challenge. Each is what he calls a defining moment. You define it. Or it defines you. With lady-killer charm and a game that can make par with garden tools, Kevin Costner rejoins Bull Durham filmmaker Ron Shelton for another funny tale of the games people play. For Costner's Roy, golf is a head-and heart-game. On both counts, that's where shrink Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) comes in. She's big city, Roy's small time, and he believes only the grandest of gestures can lure her away from a slick touring pro (Don Johnson) and earn her love. So Roy and his dutiful caddy (Cheech Marin) set out to do the impossible: win the U.S. Open. With laughs, clever battle-of-the-sexes banter and a handy way with a 7-iron, Tin Cup winningly defines the moment and contemporary romantic comedy』 『One of the better romantic comedies of the 1990s, this quirky love story stars Kevin Costner as washed-up golf pro Roy "Tin Cup" McAvoy, who has the singular misfortune of falling in love with the girlfriend (Rene Russo) of his arch rival (Don Johnson). Although he is inspired to re-ignite his golf career, challenge his opponent in the U.S. Open, and win the affection of the woman of his dreams, McAvoy has just one flaw: he's a show off when he should just focus on playing the game. Reunited with hisBull Durhamwriter-director Ron Shelton, Costner fits into his role like a favorite pair of shoes, and costar Cheech Marin scores a memorable scene-stealing comeback as McAvoy's best buddy, Romeo Posar. Mixing his love of sports with his flair for fresh, comedic dialogue, Shelton takes this enjoyable movie down unexpected detours (although some may find it a bit too long), and his characters are delightfully unpredictable.--Jeff Shannon』

I was happy with the price on amazon and I didn't hesitate to add it into my collection. I rated it 4 stars because I loved it but if I was going with the movie rating system then I'd say it was a three star movie. I was never a fan of Hugh Grant before but I found him funny and charming in this movie. There was great chemistry between him and Drew Barrymore. I honestly thought Hugh Grant stole the show. He's funny as a 80s popstar has-been. The songs are all original and they're fantastic. I'm even considering buying the soundtrack which is something I rarely do.
Haley Bennet was good as Cora Corman although her acting left a little to be desired but based on her IMDB profile, this was her first feature film, so kudos for her, she held her own against Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore.
What else I can say? Yes it's true the movie is predictable, but you're in for a treat: the cast was well chosen and I knew I would like this movie the moment they showed the 'music video' in the opening credits, so see it already.』

Problem: Alex can say it with music, but he sure can't say it with words. Enter Sophie Fisher (DREW BARRYMORE), his beguiling if quirky plant lady, who has a green thumb for lyrics. Together, they go after songwriting success -- and discover that if you want to write the perfect love song, it helps to fall in love.』 『Music and Lyricsis frothy and sweet, like the top of a perfect cappuccino shareda deux. Hugh Grant is a self-professed "happy has-been," playing his befuddled, adorable persona more spot-on than he has sinceFour Weddings and a Funeral. As Alex, former member of an '80s pop band who years later is playing at water parks and high school reunions, he's settled into a life of lesser expectations. Drew Barrymore, quietly radiant, is Sophie, the underachieving girl Friday who arrives to water--make thatoverwater--Alex's plants--and to explode him out of that comfy rut. If the plot's a bit farfetched, it matters not, since the two lead characters are so likable--and make such beautiful music together. Big bonus: the supportive role of Kristen Johnston as Rhonda, Sophie's older sis (and longtime Alex fan) whose hilarious performance threatens to steal the show whenever she's onscreen. (The owner of a chain of successful weight-loss centers, Rhonda tries to comfort a rattled Sophie: "Want to do some stress eating?") The film also marks the remarkable debut of Haley Bennett, who plays a pop star of Britney/Cristina proportions with deadpan sincerity radiating through her skimpy outfits and mega-extensions. As Alex and Sophie work on crafting musical magic, something else is taking hold. It's music to the ears of anyone needing a sweet romantic comedy that hits all the right notes.--A.T. Hurley』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (richies' reveiw) 『this dvd movie with charlotte church is great has great story to tell about family life the up and downs of it she is great in this movie so pick one up and enjoy it my family did and are glad we did.』
(Great Film) 『I am very satisfied with this product. I received it within a week, it was in new condition and a great film. Amazon had the description of the cast wrong but the seller wrote back immediately to correct it.』
("I'm rich and I'm Scottish. It doesn't get better than that.") 『Followers of Welsh classical singer Charlotte Church don't necessarily feel the same way about Craig Ferguson, but this little movie serves as a happy meeting ground for both sorts of admirers, all respective parties mingling and having a pint or four and perhaps affably making disparaging remarks about Americans. Craig Ferguson, himself a musican in his younger years, writes, directs, and stars in I'LL BE THERE, a watchable 2003 family dramedy about a washed-up aging rock star (Ferguson) who, while wrongly consigned to a psychiatric ward, learns that he has a 16-year-old daughter (Church). And so cue the familiar plot points.
As a brawny, brawny man, I've only ever caught Charlotte Church on the telly by accident, but I'm not about to deny that the girl is gifted with an amazing singing voice. On the other hand, as a brawny, brawny man who also stays up really late, I frequently tune in to Craig Ferguson's late night talk show. I'm quite appreciative of his offbeat, amiably irreverent brand of wit and humor (I think his opening monologues, offhandedly delivered with that Scottish burr of his, are often little gems). I don't know that it's so surprising, but Ferguson and Church do well together onscreen. The film's focus is most definitely on the father-daughter angle, with a mere dollop thrown in of a romance between Ferguson and Jemma Redgrave, who plays the mother of Church's character. Charlotte Church, in her cinematic debut, performs as if this weren't her cinematic debut, and I only wish that her character were given more things to do (she doesn't even have a boyfriend, which is almost sacrilege in films like this).
What keeps me from giving this film a fully extended thumbs up is the leisurely pacing and the story's predictability. The happy ending is a mere formality. The only real speed bump to the impending familial bliss is that the mother, concerned that her daughter's heart may get broken, adamantly forbids her daughter and her suddenly discovered dad from getting to know each other. Anthony Stewart Head (Giles from BUFFY) also skulks on the screen as Ferguson's sleazy manager. Will the rowdy boozy rock god quit his yen for the sauce and sort out his other issues? Will the mother thaw out and rekindle a past romance (it was actually more of a groupie fling)? Will Ferguson and Church get a chance to rock out? What do you think?
Apropos of nothing, I somehow get a kick out of the rock star's keeping a llama on his lawn. I think, partly, it's because of the llama's name, which is Dolly (heh).
What I think is that I enjoyed this movie, despite its lack of momentum. Craig Ferguson is very agreeable and occasionally dispenses funny one-liners, and I think that's really him playing the piano and guitar. Charlotte Church gets to sing, but not often enough, and I did get irked that, other than "Summertime," the musical performances weren't allowed to finish out. It's a bit startling to hear Church branching out to pop music, but she mostly handles it well. However, her duet with Ferguson at the end is too short and her voice somehow gets drowned out. For those who like to soak in refinement, she does cover a classical piece in the opening scene, so that's a chance to elevate a cultured pinkie. Also keep an eye on Josh Ackland who plays a pub-performing rockabilly musician and Church's grandfather. Those who cater to grandpa's music generally tend to raise another sort of finger.』
(I'll Be There) 『As a big fan of Craig Ferguson I truly enjoyed this film. His directorial debut. Charlotte Church's voice is gorgeous.』
(Ferguson fans in for a treat) 『A film that's a lot of fun. If you're an admirer of Craig Ferguson, this will probably be one of your favorites. The story is good enough, the singing is fun and fine, Ferguson is a hoot and the ensemble cast brings it together well. Church's singing is beautiful. Not "the greates film ever made" but enjoyable and for Ferguson addicts, a real treat.』 『International teen singing sensation Charlotte Church makes her movie debut in I'll Be There. Charlotte plays Olivia a talented teenager who discovers her father is a famous rock star who doesn't know she exists. Olivia tries to get her newfound dad to help her become a singing star and at the same time reunite her parents who haven't spoken in nearly fifteen years. I'll Be There is a feel-good comedy about love and the power of music to bring people together.Running Time: 106 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: COMEDY UPC: 085392466023』 『This low-key, thoroughly delightful comedy is the product of Scottish comic/actor/writer/director Craig Ferguson's goofy and sweet imagination. Ferguson plays retired rock star Paul Kerr, a 1980s sensation whose whiskey-fueled antics in a Welsh mansion land him, involuntarily, in a psychiatric hospital. In short order, an old bandmate (Ralph Brown) turns up to help Paul get sober, and a long-lost love (Jemma Redgrave) introduces the mortified musician to an adolescent daughter (Charlotte Church) he never knew he had. Lots of catching up and relationship repairs ensue, but the film is really an off-center, eccentric comedy in which quaint villagers debate the origins of guitar feedback and 75-year-old veteran actor Joss Ackland (Surviving Picasso) can be found performing Roy Orbison rockers. A pleasant surprise is golden-throated Church's acting debut; revered for years as a singing prodigy, she proves to be a natural actress and outstanding pop-song stylist.--Tom Keogh』

It's also a good one for puzzles: The puzzles in the game are tough, but you won't go running for a walkthrough. You can do them well enough to not feel like a moron and they're challenging enough that they don't bore you. I highly recommend this game! Have fun!』
(Atmospheric and Great Fun) 『I loved this game. I enjoy puzzle/adventure games, and this one was just right. Too often a puzzle game is overly cryptic or too simplistic to be much fun, and usually the player ends up in a blind alley with no clue where to go. This game is open-ended enough to allow flexibility, but there's enough to find and enough going on in each area to keep it interesting even when you have to backtrack searching for a clue you missed.
In addition to that, the atmosphere is nice and creepy. The music and sound effects are great. Play it with the lights off for full effect.
Game play is nice and straightforward. It's easy to find your way around, and it's basically a point and click game. You don't have to master any complicated key combinations to play it.
And the last item: the central puzzle is set up in a realistic way, using real-world scenarios. By this I mean, nobody has set up a magical chess game that you have to solve to get into a locked area, or designed a labyrinth in the cellar that you have to navigate to pick up a scrap of paper. Sure, it's supernatural, and there are puzzles, but they make sense in context. I appreciate that, because it's easier to immerse yourself in the fantasy when you're working with real-life objects and puzzles.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Great Program For Speaking) 『Recently, I purchased this product from (...) and was very pleased with it. There was a hitch installing it on my laptop, so I contacted the retailer who promptly put me in touch with a representative from Interactive Drama for quick resolution of the problem.
The four-CD "Arabic Series" is an excellent program for those of us with formal instruction in the language. DO NOT purchase this software to learn Arabic; you will be disappointed. The program is excellent at developing and polishing speaking skills in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA). Additionally, two of the four CDs have an option for working in the Iraqi dialect.
I was initially frustrated with the program, because all of the interactive interviewees only understood some of the phrases I spoke to them. Once I followed the developers instructions of working in a quiet room with no background noises to confuse the computer and began clearly enunciating the words and speaking in a manner in which I smoothly transitioned from word-to-word within a phrase and in which I spoke at the same speed as the interactive instructor, the interactive interviewees understood me much more often.
Almost all language software on the market now has some sort of speech recognition capability that is supposed to grade your speech in the language being taught, and most of it doesn't work. Only Mr. Grahm would pen a satire titled "Reductio ad Sulfatum, or A Penny for Your Thoughts," riffing on reductive winemaking and replete with footnotes like this: "The use of copper sulfate (the active ingredient in Tidy Bowl) is the most common treatment for persistent reductive aromas in wines. In biodynamic practice, this highly effective treatment is, alas, strictly forbidden."
There is an entire chapter of verse entitled "Posey Galore," which includes such masterworks as "Howlbarino," by "Alain Gainesberger" and the lyrics to "Monster Grenache," to be sung to the tune of "The Monster Mash." I mean, where else would you find a line like "The guests included Henri Bone-eau, Michel Cryptoutier, Marcel Gui-goul and his fils"?
Like I said, you've got to be a particularly peculiar sort of wine geek to get off on Grahm's shtick -- but if a parody entitled "'B' by Thomas Puncheon" sounds intriguing, this is your book.
』 『This eclectic collection at last brings to a wide audience the irreverent, zany voice of Randall Grahm, visionary California winemaker and founder of Bonny Doon Vineyard. An iconoclastic send-up of the wine industry and a celebration of unsung grape varieties, the book features, among other things, Grahm's hilarious literary parodies--Joyce, Kafka, Pynchon, Salinger, and others--together with song lyrics, other snarky satires, poems, lectures, and more. Subtle undertones of gravitas with faint suggestions of earnestness lie beneath the humor, however, as Grahm passionately addresses the state of wine today: Where in wine does "greatness" truly repose? How might true originality in New World wines be found? Do New World winemakers have the integrity and courage to unreservedly embraceterroir? This trove includes a very personal take on Dante'sInferno(Grahm's own vision of Wine Hell) and a collection of tunes from the rock opera "Born to Rhône." Other pieces offer a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Rhône Ranger wine movement and of Bonny Doon itself, told through the story of its adventurous wine labels.Been Doon So Longis a highly entertaining journey to find the "truth of all things that may be found in the unlikely medium of a wineglass."』

(Interesting&Enlightening) 『As a believer I am a fan of Gerald's work and have read all of his books. It's actually fair to say that his work has done more to bolster my faith in God than any other single person I have encountered or read, except perhaps my current Pastor.
This book is a departure from his usual science-in-laymen's-terms work. While his earlier works deal far more with what God's creation says about God, this one takes a journey through what God says about himself in his word.
Some of the concepts explored will challenge many of the preconceptions of believers who read it, which in my mind is a very good thing. The challenge of the "problem of pain/evil" is a real stumbling block for believers and unbelievers alike. This book presents a very different picture of God than does "classical" Christianity, and one which seems far truer to both scripture and the experience of life.
I think the true depth of the idea of a dynamic God who "will be that which [he] will be" and who can "repent", will be something I will ponder for a long time. I have to say that combined with the concept that God, in creation, "contracted" and in doing so relinquished his total control and created a partnership with mankind in which he participates but doesn't totally dictate, really rather completely changes my image of God, I think, very much for the better. Certainly many things I have wrestled with begin to make a little more sense.
I highly recommend this and Gerald's other work to anyone who is willing to think outside the box and discover some deeper than superficial truths about the mysterious God we serve.』

(An absorbing discussion, recommended for spirituality collections) 『GOD ACCORDING TO GOD: A PHYSICIST PROVES WE'VE BEEN WRONG ABOUT GOD ALL ALONG comes from a Biblical scholar and MIT-trained physicist who blends science with religion to probe the nature of God in the discoveries of physics. The Biblical and physical world hold strong, supportive connections rooted in scientific evidence, Schroeder argues. His book provides a case for a dynamic, changing God who is still learning how to relate to creation in this absorbing discussion, recommended for spirituality collections. 』
(Great science , but problematic theology) 『I found this book very interesting, but there were areas that I would question. Schroeder's scientific ideas were convincing, especially his mathematical deduction of the possible existence of worlds hospitable to life, particularly intelligent life. Of course the Earth seems like a "Goldilocks" world because we are perfectly adapted to survive here. "Life as we know it" is all we are aware of, but that does not preclude life as we do not know it. The arguments are impressive, however. Less convincing is the theology, which seems based on a traditional interpretation of the Bible, especially the Torah. The author takes the familiar view that the Bible was written by God, through His infallible human prophets and scribes. Modern biblical studies have presented the more plausible idea that Holy Scripture was written by individuals much later than the traditional view. For example, Schroeder discusses the conversation that took place between Abraham and God, in which Abraham is told about the future history of his descendents. Isn't it more believable that the authors were writng these words AFTER the events had taken place, accounting for the startling accuracy of the predictions? Miraculous events described in the Bible are taken at face value. It seems to me that the farther back in history the author is writng about, the easier it is for people to accept miraculous events as true. This could account for the fact that the later prophets don't cite stories about miracles such as the ones in Exodus. People would recognize that these stories were unlikely. Neverthless, this book presents a convincing portrayal of God that is unlike anything we hear today. I would urge readers of this book to also read "The Evolution of God", by Robert Wright. It gives a different perspective on the perception of the Divine and also a different view of the history of the nation of Israel.』 『
In this groundbreaking exploration, a biblical scholar and M.I.T.-trained physicist combines decades of research to change the debate between religion and science, presenting a new paradigm of how to understand God.
Gerald Schroeder has spent his career revealing the hand of God in the intricate discoveries of physics. Now, for the first time, he turns his attention to this force, examining both the Bible and the physical world to discover the true nature of GodâGod according to God.
Schroeder argues that we have ignored those traits of God we find unappealing, replacing them with our personal desire for the all-knowing, all-loving, never-changing deity that so many worship today. This leads to the age-old problem: How can there be such a God when the world is filled with tragedy? Yet Schroeder reveals that this troubling juxtaposition is really smoke and mirrors. The God revealed in the Bible is 100 percent compatible with the world as we know it today. It is our misconception of God that causes the disparity. In fact, the concept of God that atheists rail against and that believers defend is inaccurate.
InGod According to God, Schroeder presents a compelling case for the true God, a dynamic God who is still learning how to relate to creation. The key to God's action in the world, according to Schroeder, can be found in a well-known verse in Exodus that is typically translated "I am that which I am." Schroeder's correction that it should be translated "I will be that which I will be" reveals a God that changes to fit the ever-changing world.
This opens our eyes to other characteristics of God that we have long overlooked despite their being present in some of the most popular stories in the Bibleâa God who regrets (the flood of Noah), a God who wants us to argue with Him (Jacob wrestling with God in the desert), and thus a God who changes His mind (Moses convinces God to spare the Israelite people), and a God who allowed nature, and the creation itself, from the very start, to rebel (Adam's and Eve's betrayal in Eden).
With riveting chapters on the origins of life, a scientist's view of creation, and the unique place of our planet in the galaxy,God According to Godoffers a radical paradigm shift that will forever change how we understand God.

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The philosophy of coexistence) 『"We Have Never Been Modern" by Bruno Latour is a brilliant interdisciplinary work that profoundly challenges our assumptions about the world we live in. Mr. Latour views the Enlightenment from an anthropological perspective to reveal how its multiple and contradictory ideals have conspired to lead humanity towards ever greater social and environmental crises. Mr. Latour's breakthrough analysis provides a philosophical road map towards a sustainable 'nonmodern' world wherein nature and society are more harmoniously joined together for the greater good.
Mr. Latour traces our modern confusion to a series of debates between Thomas Hobbes and Robert Boyle in the seventeenth century which led to divergences in the study of nature or ideologies on the one hand and science or facts on the other; modernity became defined by the knowing of what was previously unknown. Mr. Latour contends that the 'purification' or incontestability of scientific facts and ideologies has failed to account for the 'hybrid' ways in which society and nature actually respond to change. Indeed, the interjection of science into the real world has created a multiplicity of what Mr. Latour calls 'quasi-objects', or phenomena that are located in the midpoint between science and nature; examples of quasi-objects include global warming, genetic engineering, the AIDS epidemic, and so on. Mr. Latour believes that we are ill-equipped to address these problems inasmuch as the institutions built around Enlightenment ideals have failed to account for the nonseparation of social practices from nature.
In this light, Mr. Latour rejects the idea that humanity has ever really broken away from its premodern past. To begin with, Mr. Latour suggests that the premoderns' assignment of transcendence to inanimate objects is similar in kind to the transcendent powers assigned by moderns to sciences and ideologies. Mr. Latour goes on to contend that the modern experience is simply larger in scale than the premodern, with ever-more sophisticated but conflicting explanations about the meaning of the extended networks that bind our lived experiences undergoing constant flux. Mr. Latour states that 'morphism' better explains the nonmodern world we inhabit in which humans must continuously adapt themselves to changing sociological and natural conditions.
Mr. Latour argues that once we refute the idea that we have ever been modern, we can reclaim our sense of being ordinary and thereby express our solidarity with all peoples and the planet; at that point, we will be able to focus on the collective challenge of addressing the critical problems that confront us. Crucially, this task requires that our conception of politics enlarges; the discourse must encompass the multitude of human and non-human subjects or 'things' alike if we wish to solve the problems that the quasi-objects present to us. For example, Mr. Latour suggests that in the case of ozone depletion such a debate might be enjoined by representatives speaking on behalf of chemical companies, workers, the ozone hole itself, Antarctica, and so on.
Originally written in 1991, Mr. Latour's pathbreaking thought has proven to be highly influential, with many of his arguments in essence being echoed and enlarged by more and more similarly-minded progressive writers. To cite just a few: Robyn Eckersley's The Green State: Rethinking Democracy and Sovereignty articulates the juridical basis for the representation of non-human life forms in our democracy; Vandana Shiva's Earth Democracy: Justice, Sustainability, and Peace provides a moral argument for human rights and environmentally justice; and Steven Wise' Drawing the Line makes a compelling case for animal rights. Together, works such as these suggest that a new kind of Enlightenment may be forming: a philosophy that recognizes the future of humanity is dependent upon, and not estranged from, the other life forms that coexist with us on planet earth.
This challenging but deeply rewarding book is highly recommended for all philosophically-minded and hopeful readers.』
(Good but Complex) 『Unfortunately I have not finished the book yet due to time constraints, but I have completed the first few chapters. It is a complicated book that requires attention to detail and some discussion. I am a atmospheric scientists so the type of writing found is this book is new to me and required 100% concentration. Discussing the book with a group was essential for clarifying some points the author had. I don't feel knowledgeable enough in this field to comment on the validity of the paper, I'll leave that to the professionals.』
(Engaging discussion of our views of culture and nature) 『For those readers familiar with Science in Action, Bruno Latour may not at first strike one as the ideal candidate to sort out the most pressing philosophical issues about human cultures. But that is exactly what this slim, easy to follow volume does: it sorts them out. Latour posits that our "modern" society (and this is taken as Western and/or industrialized society) is based upon a series of paradoxes whereby both nature and society are "constructed" (by humans) and at the same time "transcendent." This contradiction enables us to, among other things, appropriate huge chunks of the natural into the social without giving it so much as a thought because the "modern constitution" of our thought effectively prevents it. Nature can both intervene in society (e.g. by being transformed into manufactured items) and remain distinct, pristinely "natural." Through a series of carefully argued comparisons and contrasts between the "modern consistution," the "non-modern constitution," and (of course) the "postmodern constitution" Latour offers a way for Western society to achieve a responsible relationship to nature and society through a reconsideration of the affects of, for example, the implementation of a new technology on both the natural and the social. The many graphic illustrations and charts serve to provide visual explanations for his argument. I never would have ventured into this text without them. Regardless of your background or ideological leanings, be prepared to be challenged by We Have Never Been Modern in two areas. First, Latour is not shy about employing specific terms where he deems necessary, and that is absolutely everywhere. Many of the neologisms I have found quite helpful, but the reader's attention must never waver when they are trotted out. Furthermore, you should be prepared to follow Latour wherever he may list, in particular into the history of the vacuum pump. The second major area of challenge is in the nature of his solution to the modern quandary, what he terms "The parliament of things." This arrangement of otherwise distinct and dispersed voices from and about the same "quasi-object" will require major compromises all around. It is hard enough to give a voice to indigenous populations, Latour wishes to enlist others (even scientists!) to speak on behalf of the trees. The price is hefty, but well worth the money, the wait and the effort of what, in the main, is an exhilirating read.』
(of course some people wouldn't like this book) 『i loved this book: it questions the idea of repeatability, which means that it questions the religion of science (as practiced by amateurs)and it shows you how language has served the impulse towards duplicity. the book also has a certain tongue-in-cheek wit about it, and that makes the ideas more interesting to read.
i can see where latour would make people nervous if they were fully invested in a point of view not fully understood. but, until the government takes down the bill of rights, diversity in thinking is still allowed and maybe even encouraged.
enjoy this book. it is fun.』
(Interesting, but hard to read) 『I'd like to think I'm not a dummy, but this was hard to read. It looks to me like the book was translated to English by someone who might know more about Anthropology than written communication. There were times when I felt that maybe it had been run through Babblefish.
Dissing of the translator aside, the author assumes the reader is completely knowlegable of all the apparently pretty divisions and differences in opinions between one group of scientists and another. Man I could care less, unless it leads to an advancement of a science, and I wasn't convinced. But maybe because I didn't care.
There were times where I felt that a greater service would have been done if the soap opera would have been skipped.
That said, the book contains some insightful and thought provoking ideas on how societies view each other and themselves. I found some concepts a powerful catalyst in my design efforts.』
『
With the rise of science, we moderns believe, the world changed irrevocably, separating us forever from our primitive, premodern ancestors. But if we were to let go of this fond conviction, Bruno Latour asks, what would the world look like? His book, an anthropology of science, shows us how much of modernity is actually a matter of faith.
What does it mean to be modern? What difference does the scientific method make? The difference, Latour explains, is in our careful distinctions between nature and society, between human and thing, distinctions that our benighted ancestors, in their world of alchemy, astrology, and phrenology, never made. But alongside this purifying practice that defines modernity, there exists another seemingly contrary one: the construction of systems that mix politics, science, technology, and nature. The ozone debate is such a hybrid, in Latour's analysis, as are global warming, deforestation, even the idea of black holes. As these hybrids proliferate, the prospect of keeping nature and culture in their separate mental chambers becomes overwhelming--and rather than try, Latour suggests, we should rethink our distinctions, rethink the definition and constitution of modernity itself. His book offers a new explanation of science that finally recognizes the connections between nature and culture--and so, between our culture and others, past and present.
Nothing short of a reworking of our mental landscape. We Have Never Been Modernblurs the boundaries among science, the humanities, and the social sciences to enhance understanding on all sides. A summation of the work of one of the most influential and provocative interpreters of science, it aims at saving what is good and valuable in modernity and replacing the rest with a broader, fairer, and finer sense of possibility.
