Thos Bloody Nigels In The Band... Scott Roughton, vocal Charles Phelan, drums and percussion Mike Howard, guitar and vocal Chris Gibb, lead guitar Darquis Rivard, bass Bio... Those Bloody Nigels is a new band from Montreal, Canada. Formed in January of 1995, the band consists of five members--two of whom have been together since 1989. Those Bloody Nigels is an unpretentious guitar-driven rock band. With five song writers drawing on their own musical and life experiences, the band maintains a personal approach to writing and playing that appeals to a wide audience. What have they done? Those Bloody Nigels launched their first CD before a live audience of screaming fans on August 1, 1997 at Club Soda in Montreal. Their self-titled album includes selections from a repertoire of original songs composed by members of the group over the past few years. Those Bloody Nigels have performed many shows in and around the Montreal area. Last spring the group played at Le Spectrum de Montreal, to a full house. The group has opened for bands such as Crash Vegas, played benefit shows, and paid its dues on the Montreal music scene. What are they up to? Along with the CD launch, Those Bloody Nigels released their first video single entitled "Hideaway" on Music Plus, and Much Music. Recent appearances have included gigs at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto, at Bourbon Street and Clydes in Montreal, at Pub St-Patrick in the Eastern Townships and at Kashmir in Quebec city. They recently gave a live television performance and interview on CTV's Montreal AM Live with Leslie Roberts. On radio, they have been interviewed and featured on CHOM FM's Made in Canada with Too Tall. Mix 96's 3 Deep with Jeremy Zafran had high praise for the band. Their CD is currently being played on radio stations across Canada. They have been feature artists on programs for Q107, Toronto; WBTZ The Buzz, Burlington Vermont; CIFM and CFOX in Vancouver; CFBR and CJSR, Edmonton, and others. Harp and nothing but harp, played by a world-famous harpist Susann McDonald.

Thirteen pieces are played on the concert harp, two on the Paraguayan harp ("La Guabina"and"Llanos"), and one on the Irish harp (though this is actually a 2-piece set"Believe Me If All Those Endearing You Charms"and an"Irish Gigue".

Tunes vary from 14th/15th century to contemporary, some very familiar, some not well known, mostly classical, a few traditional, with wondeful variations of volume within the pieces and contrasts of style between them.

Susann McDonald plays everything with a firm, clear, fresh touch even on the most elaborate glissandos. The music flows and bubbles in cascades of sound. Subtle, unexpected variations in timing add to the excitement.

Digitally recorded and mastered half-speed by genius sound engineer Stan Ricker, the result is unbelievably pure undistorted sound, as though Suzanne were sitting directly in front of you.

Perfect both for background music and careful listening.

Luis Bunuel's major theme in this film is showing his dislike
for the 'bourgeois' segment of society. A similar theme was
shown about 5 years after "Discreet Charm"'s premiere, although
more playfully, in Bunuel's "That Obscure Object of Desire."
In what seems to be a dreamlike scene in "Discreet Charm",
a group of defenseless 'bourgeois' friends is machine gunned
without reason. Did the director think the friends
deserved the punishment?
"The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" unfolds with the absurd logic of a recurrent dream, and since the DVD has been beautifully restored, one is able to dream the dream in vivid color: Elegantly dressed guests arrive for a dinner party only to have the hostess inform them that they have arrived on the wrong night; thus, they keep making appointments for dinners that are continually interrupted for one reason or another--all of the reasons being as patently ridiculous as are the characters: a bishop, who arrives at the house and asks to be hired as a gardener, and then relates the story of his macabre childhood; a soldier, who arrives at a restaurant (that has run out of tea and coffee), asks to join the ladies, whom he has never met before, and relates the story of his macabre childhood; a General, who arrives with his platoon a day early at the same house with the same hostess in time for dinner, and then, after the General invites a Private to relate the story of his macabre dream to the hosts and the invited guests (who listen attentively), both General and platoon depart for maneuvers (but not before inviting all the guests to his house for dinner, where even more macabre events unfold.). Thus, the dreams contain dreams within dreams within dreams within dreams within dreams et cetera ad absurdum.

This film is for anyone who has ever had recurrent nightmares of waiting for a bus on the wrong corner; of being about to take a test only to discover that one has studied the wrong subject; of being about give a lecture only to discover that one has forgotten the notes; or of performing on stage with a mouth stuffed with peanut-butter when one's cue is coming up. All the absurd commonplaces that make perfect sense when one is dreaming. And much of the "discreet charm" of the bourgeois characters in this film derives from the fact that one is dreaming their nightmares and not one's own.
This is arguably Buñuel's best film. Described as "a complex, shifting, virtually plotless web of dreams within dreams within dreams," Luis Buñuel's 1972 Academy Award winning surrealist film, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie) chronicles five derailed dinner parties of a group of three affluent Parisian couples, intermixed with four dreams dreamt by different characters. The sextet of friends includes Rafael Acosta (Fernando Rey), François Thévenot (Paul Frankeur), Simone Thévenot (Delphine Seyrig), Florence (Bulle Ogier), Alice Sénéchal (Stéphane Audran), andHenri Sénéchal (Jean-Pierre Cassel). Although they constantly arrive for dinner parties, they never actually eat. Whether they arrive on the wrong night, or there's a corpse in the next room, their plans are always thwarted by some absurd complication. Meanwhile, secrets involving adultery, perversions, boredom, hypocrisies, military maneuvers, and drug smuggling are revealed beneath the surface of their "polite," bourgeois facade. Buñuel breaks all the narrative rules in this film. Dreams interrupt scenes and unpredictabile surreal twists interrupt the film's narrative in a way that might be described as Monty Python at its most extreme. While other filmmakers are retired at age 72, Buñuel was at his charming best.

Criterion's two-disc edition of this masterpiece includes a new high-definition film transfer, El náufrago de la calle de Providencia (The Castaway on the Street of Providence, 1970): a 24-minute documentary homage to Buñuel by his friends Arturo Ripstein and Rafael Castanedo, A propósito de Buñuel (Speaking of Buñuel, 2000): a new 98-minute documentary on the life and work of Buñuel by Jose Luis López-Linares and Javier Rioyo, the original theatrical trailer, and new and improved English subtitles. Highly recommended, must-see cinema.

One of the Spanish master's funniest films, the Oscar-winning "Charm" gleefully savages the manners and mores of the upper crust, employing bizarre plotlines and fanciful farce to attack the well-heeled scions of respectable society as vain, decadent, elitist, and thoroughly amoral. Rey, Seyrig, and New Wave icon Ogier head the stellar ensemble cast, with Julien Bertheau standing out as a pompous, not-so-holy bishop. Buñuel's dream-within-a-dream sequences, which involve ghosts, terrorists, and sundry other characters, are simply brilliant, and bring this sublime, extended joke to the verge of divine absurdity.

There are not many artists who could tell the same joke over and over again and get away with it creating the film as brilliant, funny, absurd, witty, and clever as Buñuel's "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie", 1972. The story of six friends who try to arrange and have a nice dinner together but cannot complete (or even start) their meal does not sound very exiting but wait until you watch this comedy. I've always known how interesting surrealism is but I never thought how funny it could be. I've seen the film four or five times - it only gets better with each viewing. Highly recommended.

What can be more enjoyable then a meal among friends and family? In Luis Buñuel's surrealistic comedyThe Discreet Charm Of The Bourgeoisieit is this common ritual a sextet of upper-class friends repeatedly attempt, only to be obstructed by one obscure event after another. Masterfully balancing the dichotomy of class vs. debauchery Buñuel delivers a ripping critique of the upper class. It is clear from the beginning that the lives Buñuel'sBourgeoisieare living are not what they seem. Eventually, their true colors begin to shine; not in actual actions but in haunting dreams. What is real and what lies in the subconscious becoming exceedingly blurry and in order to deliver his message, surrealism must take over. It is hard to pigeonhole Buñuel's classic that won him the Oscar forBest Foreign Language Film 1972: An absurd odyssey? A discreet satire? Not necessarily, but definitely charming.--Rob Bracco

(An interesting but bizarre story)

This is a fun DVD to watch for anyone in the Tupperware business. I have been in since the 80's and really enjoyed watching the DVD. Its very nostaglic and I can't see anyone other than folks in the TW biz or someone studying business in college being interested in it. It was well made and informative.
Being a Tupperware Consultant from New England, I had heard the show was periodically aired on PBS. My purchasing the DVDs was to use one as an informational and training tool; and give the other as a gift to my local director. Was I pleasantly surprised to see our own Legacy Executive Director, Tommy Damigella, being interviewed and discussing his family's involvement in the early years of Tupperware,in the Boston area!

Covers the beginning of Earl Tupper's product idea and the manufacturing of Tupperware. How Brownie Wise and friends through using the home party made it a household phenomenon, in the 50's&60's. Full of fun clips of Jubilees' and great interviews from early dealers.

The history of the product was more interesting than I thought it would be. A woman in Detroit (Brownie Wise) saw it at Hudson's Department Store and wrote the company how she felt the party idea would be more lucrative. They end up working together and his handy kitchen items became wanted by housewives across America. She helped women have a way to make money at home. Sadly, her story doesn't have a happy ending once the business relationship between her and Mr. Tupper soured.

I never knew that selling Tupperware made some woman a decent income, some even rich.
Who would have thought this was such an interesting story-- and sad one, too, when you hear how Brownie was drummed out. Really great doc.
There were times during this documentary that I found myself staring at the screen in disbelief, mouth agape. Watching frumpy housewives digging madly for buried treasure is not something you see everyday, and it is not something one easily forgets.

It reminds those of us who are too young to remember clearly that once upon a time, before the patents expired, that Tupperware was the one&only product of its kind, and you couldn't get it in stores. Now days, Earl Tupper's burping lid is a commonplace feature on nearly all plastic food storage&can been seen on the shelves of almost any store with kitchenware. Back then, it was Tupperware or nothing. Likewise, any number of products are now marketing through the home party model, but such a concept did not really exist until Brownie Wise convinced Earl Tupper that his product would be best marketed through the home¬ in stores.

There are several themes in this documentary, not the least of which is the phenomenon of the female salesperson, managing her own inventory&accounts. Women had worked plenty (especially during World War II), but not in this mode of sales. Working this way gave housewives, who might otherwise not have worked at all, the confidence to believe that they could be competent businesswomen, led by the example of Brownie Wise. This no doubt helped lay the groundwork for today's modern working woman.

A darker theme is the struggle between Earl Tupper&Brownie Wise over day-to-day control of the marketing side of the business. The documentary points out that Brownie Wise made sure to surround herself with male executives, not female, because she did not want any other women stealing the spotlight from her. Brownie Wise's desire for publicity was undeniable, and eventually this nutured a resentment within Earl Tupper that ultimately led to his termination of Wise.

For me, the most memorable moments are the scenes at headquarters in Orlando Florida. They are memorable for the most part because they tend to be sort of creepy&bizarre. The Jubilees, with their wacky&outlandish themes, serve as a reminder that there was some pretty strange stuff going on in the 1950's, and in this case it was all about selling some innocuous plastic containers.

It may be weird, but you can't get away from it. I ended up inheriting some of my grandmother's Tupperware. God only knows how old it is --- I would guess probably about 50 years old --- but it still works just fine&I cannot justify getting rid of it. I will probably unload it on my daughter in a few decades when the opportunity avails itself. How much of this stuff is clattering around in the nooks&crannies of our homes? It looks like it could last forever if we don't deliberately melt it. For as ubiquitous a product as Tupperware is, most of us really have no idea of the history behind it. It is an interesting story indeed.

"Lucas, me Quiera a Mi" is a very funny black gay comedy. It is almost pure camp with an outrageous cast of characters. Even though much of the film is cliché, it is still one of the funniest films I have seen in a long time. Three gay men are living together but can't seem to pay the rent so they decide it bring in a fourth roommate. The need for the roommate is immediate as their landlady is threatening to evict them but they are very particular about who this new roommate will be.
The guys set up an interviewing process and it is obvious that the only guy who can fill the bill is the last guy to come to talk to them--Lucas. When Lucas does not show up at a meeting later, the guys begin to worry. When they open the door to the apartment they see something that they did not expect. But what has happened to Lucas is partly due with the guys themselves.
The film is the definition of fluff. Naturally all three guys fall in love with Lucas and when this is realized, we flashback as each of the three gives his confession of love with Lucas who they found murdered in their flat. It later turns out that Lucas was the missing lover of one of two policewomen who come to investigate the crime. When the murder cannot be solved, the body had to be disposed of. This doesn't seem like much of a plot but when you meet the characters who represent every stereotype, you can't help laughing.

What an enjoyable comedy! The plot is so far-fetched, the acting so over-the-top, and the script chock full of delicious camp, that the movie is a joy to watch. Best friends, Dani, Toni and Carlos all fall head-over-heels in lust with their new roommate, jealousy comes between them. But Lucas isn't quite the nice guy they imagined, and when he's found murdered, the bizarre 'investigation' that follows implicates everyone as the possible killer...it just happens that Dani, Toni and Carlos are more concerned with proving who was Lucas' actual lover, rather than defending their innocence!

My one qualm is with the subtitle job: the translations for the dialog sometimes don't match what's being said. It catches the gist of the moment, but there are British-isms that might throw viewers on this side of the Atlantic. Folks who are fairly fluent in Spanish will have a better time switching off the subtitles and just enjoying the film.

By no means an Oscar winner or masterpiece, "Lucas Me Queria a Mi" is just good fun all around. Highly recommended for a night of chuckles with a delicious gay twist.

PERDONA BONITA, PERO LUCAS ME QUERIA A MI (roughly translated means ' Pardon me Duckie, but Lucas loves Me!) is a piece of fluff from Spain that is so over the top that it is almost Daliesque. Were it not for a fairly strong cast this little film could be mistaken for a low budget TV series type project.

Toni (Jordi Mollà), Dani (Roberto Correcher) and Carlos (Pepón Nieto) are three gays living together in a flat and find their rent is so past due that they are to be evicted unless they come up with some fast cash. Their flat has an extra room, they advertise for a tenant, interview an endless groups of hilariousmisfits and finally settle on the hunky Lucas (Alonso Caparrós) with whom all three fall in love! The scene flashes forward three months and when Lucas doesn't show up at the apartment the three begin to confess that each is enamored with and seeing Lucas secretly. When Lucas cannot be found atthe usual designated meeting places the three return to their flat to find Lucas murdered in his bed!

The police are called, the policewomen are bizarre beyond words and it is discovered that Lucas is the missing lover of one of the two women. In a very high camp setting each of the three roommates 'confesses' his own dalliance with the dead Lucas (this is done with flashbacks that paint Lucas in the imagined delusional image of each), various 'witnesses' contribute their views, and finally when the murder cannot be solved the entire group disposes of the corpse in an odd manner and the way in which the story ends is hilarious.

Some may be offended by the stereotypes that represent every character, but since each of the characters is campy and ludicrous no one type is damaged intentionally. The clichés are broad and the humor is pushed to extremes, but the little film bounces merrily along as the bit of fluff it is. I'm using this book as a basis for teaching a Manners class to fourth graders. It's organized and easy to follow, making the lessons short and to the point. The children love the class and are practicing what they are learning.
Good manners have never gone out of style. "Be the Best You Can Be" not only teaches good manners and proper etiquette in a very readable format, the book also encourages and inspires young people to achieve poise and self-confidence. Well-written and easy to read, this book covers a wide variety of topics, including good posture, phone etiquette, table manners, personal grooming and image. Parents will also likely discover some interesting etiquette tips. Still not sold? My 12-year-old daughter liked the book so well that she wanted - no, insisted - on reading it twice! How's that for reaching one's target audience? Great job, Ms. Thompson!

Robin Thompson covers so much, from nurturing self-esteem, consideration of others to appropriate table manners, etc. I, too am enjoying it immensely. I choose to give this book a 5 star rating.

Tess is a complete idiot about Crow and it really made me MAD!!! I liked the stuff about Esskay and the mystery, but the stuff with Crow seriously peeved me off--it lost a star for that. It was also kind of predictable, and Tess' relationship with Whitney is totally flawed. The heroine screws up her life and has no one to blame but herself. This one certainly didn't 'charm' me; I won't be going on any more adventures with Tess Monaghan.
CHARM CITY picks up a few months after the events of Baltimore Blues: A Tess Monaghan Novel (Tess Monaghan Mysteries). Tess is still living above her Aunt Kitty's bookshop, and the endearing musician/bookseller Crow seems to have worn down some of Tess' reservations about a possible relationship. She's even relented enough to accept a job as an apprentice investigator for the curmudgeonly lawyer/rowing instructor Tyner. But this unusually "normal" period doesn't last long, as the editors of the Beacon-Light hire Tess to investigate a case of a reporter undermining the system, publishing a controversial article that was never meant to run. In no time, the subject of the article turns up dead. An apparent suicide. Tess follows the trail through the ranks of the newspaper, convinced the suicide was, in fact, murder. Several secondary characters get some great fleshing out in this second volume, notably Tess' best friend (and crack reporter) Whitney and the always awesome Crow. I am now completely hooked on this series and thrilled to find there are, count them, seven more to go. Bring on the fun.
CHARM CITY appeals to me even more than the murder mystery that kick-started this series, BALTIMORE BLUES, because it deals with one of my personal favorite issues: journalism ethics in a constantly-changing world. While CHARM CITY is clearly a few years behind us - they're still debating the importance of the internet, for example, while the debate is LONG over out here in the real world - it deals with the issues we all face, the philosophy of a newspaper as objective purveyor of information while also an impassioned watchdog for the people. That's not an easy line to walk.

The only place CHARM CITY fails is in its predictability. Alas, I pegged the whodunit far too early. I also am bothered by some of the gender stereotypes - aside from Tess herself, the women tend to be conniving and heartless, and the men lecherous dogs. Lippman's cynicism shows a little more clearly than in BALTIMORE BLUES, alas.

But even if you haven't the slightest interest in journalism ethics or the philosophy of news reporting, you'll still find CHARM CITY a fascinating whodunit. Tightly written, smart and fast-paced, I strongly recommend Lippman to any mystery fan.
As usual, Laura Lippmann has done a great job of writing the adventures of Ms. Tess Monaghan. This is a nice book to read, it's fun, easy and you'll probably not guess the ending.

Take this to the beach!

The first Tess Monaghan book left me relatively unimpressed, the pacing was sluggish, the writing clunky, the heroine more annoying than engaging, and the plotting sometimes awkward. All in all it was a pretty mediocre (though not outright bad) debut, but the Baltimore setting and generally effusive praise the series has gotten was enough to make me try the next in the series to see if Lippman had improved.

Set soon after the events of Baltimore Blues, this book finds Tess still living above her aunt's bookstore, still sharing a bed with her younger musician boyfriend Crow, and halfheartedly working as an investigator for a lawyer. A meeting with a friend from her days working as a newspaper reporter is the catalyst for her latest adventure. It involves the effort to bring pro basketball to Baltimore, and the shady background of the prime mover and shaker in this effort. Somehow, a muckraking piece on his life winds up in the paper, despite having been killed editorially, and Tess is brought in to try and figure out who did it and how.

This becomes a bit more important when the subject of the article turns up dead of an apparent suicide. As Tess pokes around the newspaper and its computer system, she also investigates one of the reporters, the suicide, and more and more. Meanwhile, there's also a subplot involving Tess's uncle, who is beaten into a coma, for reasons no one can work out. He also left a greyhound in her care, whom she names Esskay (after the local hot dog brand) and becomes an important character in his own right.

Unfortunately, Tess continues to fail to engage me as a heroine. She flails around for the truth, bumbling along full of self-pity and bitterness, lucky to be alive at the end. It doesn't help matters that the book switches away to third-person narration for some scenes. Oddly, despite Lippman's career as a newspaper journalist, some of the plotting concerning the newspaper and its operations seems very artificial and false. Finally, traditional mystery readers will find it annoying that there really aren't the clues in place for the reader to deduce "whodunnit." I'm not getting what it is that others seem to love about this series, and I'm not sure I'm willing to spend time on a third book to find out.

Business tycoon "Wink" Wynkowski is trying to change all that by bringing pro basketball back to town, and everybody's rooting fro him -- until a devastating, muckraking expose of his lurid past appears on the front page of the Baltimore Beacon-Light. It's a

surprise even to the Blight's editors, who thought they'd killed the piece. Instead, the piece killed Wink -- who's found in his garage with the car running.

Now the Blight wants to nail the unknown computer hacker who planted the lethal story, and the assignment is right up the alley of a former newshound like Tess. But it doesn't take long for her to discover deeper, darker secrets, and to realize that this situation is really more about whacking than hacking. It's just murder in Baltimore these days -- and Tess Monaghan herself might be next on the list.

Deadly Charm, Book 3 in the Amanda "Bell" Brown series, is wacky, informative, and will have you laughing with "Bell" one moment and crying for her the next.

As in Book 1, Murder, Mayhem&a Fine Man, and Book 2, Death, Deceit&Some Smooth Jazz (Amanda Bell Brown Mysteries, No. 2), Deadly Charm finds Bell, a faith-filled forensic psychologist/amateur sleuth, fast becoming a not-so-amateur "girl-Columbo" digging her way to the bottom of a suspicious toddler death case.

At the same time, Bell, is clumsily stepping into her new role as Mrs. Lieutenant Jazz Brown. As newlyweds, Bell and Jazz are also newly separated and potentially parents-to-be. This all makes for wacky love-hate interactions between the two. One minute they just need to grow up and get along. The next, they seem to "get" the marital oneness concept, and are there for each other as mates and as partners in solving the death case.

Each of the three books in the series could easily stand alone, though they'd be most enjoyable to new readers, read rapidly one behind another. As another customer said, waiting this long for Book 3 to come out was worth the wait.

Somehow in Deadly Charm, author Claudia Mair Burney teaches without preaching. There's just the right amount of info about police protocol, mental health, religion, and women's health, to name a few of the issues Bell and Jazz encountered. After finishing the book, I wanted to know even more about those issues in case they ever show up in my own writing.

If you're looking to read something so smart, so funny, and so engaging, you want to read Deadly Charm (Amanda Bell Brown Mystery Series, Book 3).
I absolutely loved the book! It was well worth the wait! I read it in 2 days and can't wait for the next one to come out. I'm sooo glad Rocky found someone.
I tried to read the second book in the novel, but could not get through it. So I picked up this book because I did not want to give up on the series. However what began as a mystery ended up veering off into a romantic back and forth and then wrapped it up in such a contrived way. But the thing that bothers me most was no progress was made - We get it - Amanada Bell has self-esteem issues. We get it - she feels guilty about her past, even despite her faith and knowing that God loves all of us and looks past our sins. We get it - Jazz is finer that any man that has walked the face of the earth. There was no character development and no growth, especially from Amanda who gets something she wants very badly yets doesn't seemed very concerned about it to stop investigating. It was the same old, same old throughout the whole book. I'm not sure if I will be reading a fourth book. I love lady investigators (Tamara Hayle!) and I love Christian fiction, but this one left A LOT to be desired.

This book was sensational! Following the other 2 Amanda Bell Brown books, this book comes out sizzling with a great plot and excellent character development. It's okay if you haven't read the other two, because this plot can stand alone in the series, but if you have read the others, it fleshes out Bell's character even more. It is a wonderful progression of the story from the other 2 novels and makes you see a totally different facet of Amanda's life. Great read and I definitely would recommend it to suspense readers and romantics like myself!

(Not as good fit as I thought it would be)

(Stand out in the iPhone crowd)

I have both the iPhone 3G and the original iPhone.

On the iPhone 3G the front decal worked ok, there was about 1/16" gap that it didn't cover. The back decal is confusing ... I don't see how a flat decal can ever work on a curved surface. All the decal does is bubble up on the corner. I was disappointed with the fit and I would not recommend it.

I then tried the decal on my original iPhone. I found the front decal was too large and hung over the edge. I kind of figured it would but the description said "3G iphone" so I don't know if it was intended for the original iphone or not. The back decal didn't work for the same reasons mentioned above.

Cool idea but it just doesn't work ... the bad part is since they say it is used they will not allow me to return the product. Yet the back decal will never work, go figure :(
