My favorite use for this chain is to hang a briolette or other bead from each of the central small links. You can make a really beautiful necklace, bracelet or anklet this way. Make the central bead larger than the others, and you get a pendant effect, with small beads cascading down the sides of the necklace. Another use for this style of chain is to make adjustable length extenders for necklaces and bracelets. Jewelry that is adjustable in length is more saleable - it will fit more of your customers. It starts out with "My Breathing," which is my all time favorite song by him. The atmosphere here is so thick you can cut it with a knife! The keyboards have an appealing "Old World" sensibility and the female vocals are not strident here than they can sometimes be. The stately rhythm bed is a wonder to behold. I can't say enough good about this track so I'll move on.
"I Can't Stop" features an appealing, relentless quality as one would imagine from its title. "New Thing From London Town" is another song recorded with Shakatak's Bill Sharpe. Some nice flavoring again from that collaboration. The awesome "Strange Charm" should have been a single! The Oriental synth flourishes complement the outstanding staccato vocal arrangements of Numan and Tessa Niles, which interlock with a breathtaking precision. "The Need" overstays its welcome a bit but is otherwise an amusing rewrite of Bowie's "Cracked Actor." Numan is never one to shy away from Bowieisms! Like on "The Fury," Numan ends the program with another ballad. "This Is Love" is just the man and a piano to harmonize with its lyrical vulnerability. This was another winner from his Numa Records label but he would soon surface in a 3 album deal with IRS that paid fewer dividends than this more vibrant work.』

As I have long admired Josephine Baker as a person, I wanted to see one of her few movies. This one, while having a simple&formula story, was much more than I expected from other reviews. It is, in its way, semi-biographical, as it describes the rise of a beautiful woman from abject poverty to wealth. I found it to have an all-round excellent cast and well acted. Some of the shots were difficult to see, but that is how many black&white films of this era were shot. The film has been re-mastered very well. Josephine Baker was excellent in this film. I do wish that there had been more scenes of her dancing. She has been described as a "boneless" dancer, as she was extremely flexible in her youth. I was pleasantly surprised by how well she sang, as I have never heard her singing voice. She was a bit too mature to play this particular role, but she overcame that obstacle in a believable manner. All in all, I enjoyed this film very much and am adding this video to my collection.』
(So bad it's good) 『I used to think that no movies in the world beat 1930s-style Hollywood films--especially the ones featuring big musical and dance scenes--for sheer camp. But after watching "Princess Tam Tam," I realized that the French of the 1930s were pretty good at making movies so bad that, eighty-odd years later, their very badness makes them totally fun to watch.
"Tam Tam" is formulaic, as one would expect: debonair and worldly novelist is jealous of his wife, so he fakes a romance with a wild girl of north Africa--played by Josephine Baker--to make his wife jealous in turn. Baker plays a street urchin whom the novelist pretends is a "jungle" princess and introduces to Parisian high society as such. Predictably, the charade is exposed, but--also predictably--everyone lives happily ever after anyway.
There are some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments in the film. The guy who plays the novelist's sidekick, a sort of Oliver Hardy character, is really a good comedic actor. But for the most part the dialogue is strained and the editing is particularly bad. Jumps between splices occur nonstop.
The film was made, one suspects, to give Josephine Baker a stage. She'd made two earlier French films, the silent "Siren of the Tropic" and "Zou Zou," a much better talkie in which she sings the song made famous by the later film "Frida." But "Tam Tam" doesn't give Baker much of an opportunity to show her stuff. She sings a couple of numbers, which is good. But her two dance scenes are continuously interrupted by the camera panning the crowd of onlookers. And Baker looks old and a bit tired in the film. She tries real hard to be the vivacious and spirited gal that France fell in love with, but can't quite pull it off in this film.
So the film is pretty much an utter cinematic disaster. But it's great fun to watch.』

I love Princess Tam Tam overall...The dance scenes are magnificent; the flexibility and lithe grace that Josephine possessed never ceases to amaze me. One critic said that she just had a few gimicks and shouldn't be considered a dancer but Josephine accomplished with her body what many are rushing to Juilliard to achieve today. She was able to combine ballet, acrobatics, jazz dancing and vaudeville comedic steps into one stunning whole. Some people were not moved by her singing either but her range was breath taking to me. Her voice was pristine and girlish...a soprano of exquisite beauty...

The highlights of the film for me were her rendition of 'Dreams'...a lovely song that she sings; the camera gets a excellent closeup of her against the backdrop of a boat sail - showcasing her exotic good looks. And the dance scene at the end were she reveals her 'savage ways' to the French Gentry on stage at the Maharajah's party where she dances to 'Ahe, la Conga'. That scene particular keeps me on the edge of my seat.』
(The Black Venus comes to dvd) 『Josephine Baker, born and raised in St. Louis, left the United States as a teenager to escape racial discrimination. She moved to France and in the mid-20s became the toast of Paris dancing and singing in the Folies Berge. Billed as the "Black Venus," Baker wowed audiences with her provacative moves, especially her infamous "banana dance." And she made a few movies as well.
"Princess Tam Tam," filmed in Tunisia, is one of her better efforts. It is a Pygmalion-type story about a writer who takes an African vacation to escape his arrogant society wife. He and his collaborator seek inspiration to write a novel and they find it in an exotic native girl played by Baker. The writer decides to transform the girl into a princess and bring her back to France to make his wife jealous. The film is enhanced by Baker, whose personality shines through - it is easy to see why audiences were so enchanted with her. She gets to do two dance numbers - one inside a cafe and the other during an elaborate Busby Berkeley style number at the end of the film.
The extras on the disc inside a 20 minutes documentary which discusses three significant Baker films - "Siren of the Tropics," "Zou Zou," and "Princess Tam Tam." I was rewarded with a nasty black comedy, some fine performances and a satisfying take on the worm-that-turns theme. Hugo (Hugo Metsers) and Goof (Roeland Fernhout) are two buddies in Amsterdam who pick up foreign backpackers, charm them, seduce them and then steal their money. They also rip out the women's picture pages from their passports as trophies, which they post in a sexual conquest shrine they have in the apartment they share. Hugo is the dominant one, cynical, cold-hearted and selfish. Goof goes along; he's a follower, a nice enough guy with an open grin and a fairly good heart. Then they meet Lara (Vlatka Simac), and the games really begin. She says she's Russian and draws such a picture of Siberia that Goof falls in love with her and wants to take her back there. She moves in with the two. Hugo doesn't like it, or her. Before long it's clear that Lara is playing games of her own...and it's unclear just who is being hustled.
Westdijk is a young Dutch director who gives this film all the fancy angles, fast cuts, flashes of black and white that fans of Run Lola Run and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels could wish for. The movie began working for me, finally, because of three things. First, the dawning realization that these two hustlers just may have met their match. Second, the performance of Vlatka Simac. She has big eyes, a calm face and manages to appear desirable and probably untrustworthy at the same time. Third, the performance of Roeland Fernhout. He really has a goofy, open smile. It's easy to like him even though what he does to the girls he and Hugo pick up is not very nice. When he falls for Lara, then realizes what the score really is, he pulls off a triple play which is funny and satisfying.
I wound up liking this movie, but it's one of those films, I think, that you need to give a chance to develop before making up your mind. The DVD picture and audio is fine. Although a good portion of the film is in Dutch with subtitles, much of the story also is in English, the common language Lara and Goof (and Hugo) can speak.』
(DECEPTIVE DUTCH DUDES) 『 Robert Jan Westdijk's SIBERIA (Home Vision) is an edgy film about Dutch scam artists -- cavalier Hugo (Hugo Metsers) and his submissive sidekick Goof (Roeland Fernhout). They seduce and rob female backpackers visiting Amsterdam and then rip out the identity pages of their victims' passports as a souvenir in their private competition to collect IDs from around the world. They keep these mementos and the stolen loot in a cabinet shrine at Goof's place where they both live.
Things change quickly when they meet street smart Lara (Vlatka Simac), from Siberia. To Hugo's dismay, and against their self-proclaimed rules, Goof falls in love with Lara (who knows nothing of their crimes) and invites her to stay at their place. This creates problems with their ongoing scam. Soon, love sick Goof suggests to Hugo that the three use their ill-gotten gains for a trip to Siberia. Hugo says no, that he and Goof must continue their competition of seduction and robbery with the winner taking all the money. To say more would spoil this deliciously amoral and cynical story of greed, sex and deception. "Siberia" is a cold-hearted, funny and sometimes explicit film about a very twisted friendship.
Shot on location in Amsterdam, this great looking movie is artfully edited with time-lapse and grainy black and white moments. Junkie XL's urgent techno score reflects the amped images of the druggy city and the speedy, triangulating, twisty plot.

The items is several years old and apparently the toy store has had it sitting on the shelf for all that time. Not necessarily an issue -- except the batteries have also been in the toy all that time! They corroded and ruined the connections so that even after removing the old ones, cleaning the leads and adding new ones, the toy won't play at all. Note to toy stores: if an item is on the shelf for years, please remove the batteries! It was a cheap buy and so not worth the postage to return. Just wanted to warn other prospective 2009 purchasers. My daughter was heartbroken.』
(A toy, not an instrument) 『The keys don't all function individually. They're connected in groups of three or four. Your child can't, like, try to hammer out "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' because there aren't enough keys. It makes some cool sound effects, and looks cool, but the strap needs to be tied for my three-year-old because it's too long.
I can see circuit-bent Doodle-Bops keytars selling for big bucks on ebay in the distant future, so I'm going to hang onto this one.』

On the day of the event, Charlotte decides to bring Marty, the BSG doggy mascot. Katani, who is unexpectedly forced to watch her autistic sister, Kelley, for the day, decides to bring her, too. Avery takes Marty over to the batting cages, and when Katani and Kelley show up, Marty scrambles out of Avery's duffel bag to run over to Kelley. However, a nearby squirrel distracts him, and, before the BSG know it, Marty is gone!
Accusations fly as Charlotte blames Avery, while Avery struggles to not break down over the dog's disappearance. The girls set up a website and put up fliers all over town, but turn up nothing but false hopes and wild goose chases. Finally, a lead pops up that might be legitimate, and the girls find themselves having to make a difficult choice.
Should they take the opportunity to save the special riding stable that helps people like Kelley, or is Marty too special to be bought for any price?
I loved the conflict in this particular BSG book. The author does a great job of showing multiple, legitimate sides to a difficult decision, and even demonstrated how solutions can be reached through everyday means. One does not need to be a fan of the series to appreciate this aspect.

(Not Overly Charming) 『The only reason I read this book is because there is one character with autism. Katani, of Beacon Street Girls (Boston) fame has an older sister named Kelley who has autism.
Katani is friends with a group of girls in the Boston area. They call themselves the Beacon Street Girls as a nod to their neighborhood. Although I didn't care for most of the characters, save for Katani and her family and the adult characters, I did like the realistic way Kelley was presented. The second youngest of 4 daughters, Kelley has limited social skills; her verbalizations are bizarre to those who don't know her; is highly charged; cannot stand bright lights or loud noises. At the story's opening, the girls go to an outdoor festival. Disaster abounds whn the BSG mascot (an adorable mixed breed dog) runs away. The girls go frantic; send each other text messages and e-mails; blame and self recrimination abounds. Kelley has a believable meltdown as she loves the dog and can't bear noise and confusion.
Luckily, a program called hippotherapy (horseback riding treatment) for autistic youth becomes available. Kelley is enrolled. Katani is enrolled against her will as Kelley has to have "a peer to supervise her." Naturally Katani grows to love riding; proves to have talent and enjoys trotting off with her sister.
Another disaster - the stable may close due to lack of funding. As you have already guessed by now, the BSG saves the stable; the dog is returned and readers will have to wade through the book to find out how.
A bit too girly for me - I could not stand the inane and irksome "OMG" talk among other things; pink and lavender (IKKKK); those silly girls save for Katani and her sisters, but I did like the Boston setting.
A good book to pair this one with is A challenge for Brittany (Choose the right)』
(THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!) 『Marty- the BSG's little mascot is lost but is finally found by the famous Robbie Flores. Flores offers 10,000 for the little dude and half of the BSG want to accept it. Katani would like to except the award because High Hopes riding stable (a stable that helps autistic kids like Katani's sister horseback ride)would be shutting down if it doesn't raise 10,000 dollars in a week. Charolotte though is putting articles about Marty everywhere, desperatly trying to find Marty. The BSG has one HUGE problem:they don't know if they should take the money or not. A MUST READ!!!!!!! 』

(A wonderful book on all accounts!) 『Saying that this bood is good or great does not do it justice. All I can say is that this book was so good - that when I put it down I wanted to go out and meet the author. Not a lot of books make me feel that way.
The material is presented in an easy to read fashion, and she sprinkles in little tid bids of LA Voudou lore along with real life experiences that really makes everything very easy to understand. I have read so many books on voudou and many of them try to make the practice sound obscure and mysterious, but this author manages to bring it right to you - in a way that is easy to understand.
Not only that, but this lady has had an amazing life! Even though she has a wide range of experience, she does not bill anything as the "absolute" of anything. She presents to you her point of view, based on her life experiences and nudges you in the right direction to find your own path.
This book is not only informative but entertaining. If you want to know more about LA Voudou or if you are looking for a good overal spiritual book that enlightens you as well as keeps your interest - this is the book for you!』

(Good but not great:() 『I am a fan of Ellen Dugan. I have read most of her books. I waited for 10 months for this book to come out. Book of Witchery is a longer winded version of "7 days of Magic". Most of what she talks about in this book is found in 7 Days of Magic. So in that regard I was a bit dissapointed. If your are looking to expand your knowledge you won't learn much more from this book. 7 Days of Magic is much more compact and straight to the point. My favorite is still Cottage Witchery which to me is her best work ever. I still love Ellen Dugan's work and will most definitelly read any new book she comes out with!』 『
