(Great post-punk power pop) This band is the real deal. Stooges thump and pop melodies that make you wanna jump up and down. This album is a brilliant synthesis of fifty plus years of rock n' roll. The lead singer is a pheomenon, and the guitarist has serious skills. Listen to that guitar solo on Touch. First rate album. Buy it. They maintain a high energy level, while avoiding the trite repetitions that afflicts so many of today's post-punk bands. Every song on the CD is unique and worth listening to. (bubba abandons his talent for $$$) (3-1/2 Stars -- It'll charm ya up for a lil bit) When Bright Days, Dark Nights came out I didnt give him a second listen. The album was weak and he came off as another gimmick. Deliverance was a great album that proved me wrong and showed that Bubba Sparxxx was capable of giving his best backed up by Timbaland and Organized Noize production. This album here stinks. It has its moments with tight tracks like Represent, The Otherside feat Petey Pablo and Sleepy Brown(which sounds like a leftover from Deliverance) and Hey(A Little Gratitude). But these songs are offset by hot garbage tracks like Ms New Booty feat Ying Yang Twins(who thought that this collabo was a good idea?), As The Rims Spin, That Man feat Duddy Ken and Sleepy Brown, Claremount Lounge feat Killer Mike and Cool Breeze(AWFUL) and Wonderful. Bubba's intentions were good when he made Aint Life Grand feat Scar and Run Away feat Frankie J but his suprisingly weak bars kill the potential those tracks had. Heat It Up is better than Ms New Booty but its still forgettable. After hearing this album, Bubba Sparxxx career might be on thin ice. You dont follow up a brilliant album with a stinker unless you are intentionally trying to kill the momentum you gained by doing so. Deliverance was a clever and thoughtful album, The Charm is a contrived attempt at commercialism that falls flat on its face. Hopefully Bubba will break camp from Purple Ribbon because the direction they are taking him in will only lead to his downfall. Standouts: REPRESENT, THE OTHERSIDE AND HEY(A LITTLE GRATITUDE). As I said in my review for Bubba Sparxxx's previous album Deliverance, the problem he has is that people are all about his album when it first comes out, but then a month later he'd be lucky if it's still on the Billboard 200. The same fate came with his third album The Charm, which is a shame because it's his best offering yet. This album has a slightly different sound because Timbaland only produces one song on here ("Hey!"), possibly because Bubba jumped ship from Blackground and instead released this album on Purple Ribbon. Speaking of that, the first time I heard "Claremont Lounge" (with Killer Mike and Cool Breeze) was on the Got Purp Vol. II compilation, and I'm still not too impressed by it. But other songs fare better, like "Heat It Up" and "Represent". And "Wonderful" is just that. Sleepy Brown also drops by to lay down his usual breezy vocals on two back-to-back winners: "That Man" and "The Otherside". Everything else is great except that the music to "As the Rim Spins" is a little too, well, "nice" for a rap song (listen to it to understand what I mean); and sorry, but I never liked "Ms. Fat Booty". But it's still not too late to pick up The Charm. Anthony Rupert Bubba is one of my favorite rappers&this CD was great. "Run Away" with Frankie J is a wonderful song. Any true hiphop head has taken notice of bubba's lyrical skills on his first two albums, which he has essentially left behind on this strictly booty shake release. Now I can't say I blame him, it is after all a business, but in my opinion he is sacrificing his potential to have a long lasting artistic career, which looked so promising as he progressed from dark days to deliverance (and then took 30 steps backwards with this). I only hope he makes/made enough from this release to go back to making meaningful/thoughful tracks...such as warrant. Well Bubba Sparxxx has managed to churn out some good stuff in the past, the problem was that it either had only good beats like on Dark Days, Bright Nights or good lyrics on his second album Deliverance. After not having not so good sells with the latter album he hopes the third times the "Charm" here. Thankfullly with you don't get the usual guest heavy, 15+ track album that last over 70 minutes when artist release their third album. The album opens up nicely with Represent where Bubba talks about where he's from and all. Bubba manages to take you back to his good ole days from deliverance on "As The Rim Spins". The guest appearances that are on here are on key like Killer Mike and Cool Breeze's verses ("Claremont Lounge"). Frankie J does his thing singing on the chorus to "Run Away" and ditto Sleepy Brown on "The Otherside" with M.I.A. Peety Pablo teaming up with Bubba Sparxxx to drop some lines. There are ups and downs with party joints produced by Mr. Collipark on "Ms. New Booty" which is ovverated especially since the music sounds exactly like David Banner's "Play", and the mellow laidback beat of "Heat It Up". Unlike others I was dissapointed with Timbalands production "Hey! (A Lil' Gratitude)" Also this album seems a little to popish and radio friendly compared with his past stuff. Sales wise this album is Bubba's best which would convince you to buy it but I suggest you check out Delivarance before trying to "charm" yourself. With Alpha's DVD Editions, you either have the luck of getting decent copies (sometimes even very good ones like "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers") or awful ones, like this one in particular. The film is based upon a Play of an Agatha Christie Story and is superbly directed by Rowland V.Lee, with an almost complete English Cast, except for Ms. Harding. The plot is quite simple and suspenseful: a working girl wins a huge amount of money in the Lottery and meets a mysterious, attractive man. It was filmed in 1937, when the leading actress' stardom (Ann Harding) had already waned in the United States (after being one of the Top Stars during the Early Sound Era). Nonetheless, her acting ability and talent are obvious as well as her charm and grace. Basil Rathbone is excellent too as the mysterious man who arrives into her life, giving a skilled performance. The rest of the supporting cast is very good too and the sets and the film's atmosphere give the proper background to this entertaining story. In spite of the bad quality of the transfer, I could enjoy the film's plot completely, because it's so absorbing and well paced, that you forget about the "technical flaws" of the copy. If you liked Robert Montgomery's "Night Must Fall", this one's for you. 'Til now Alpha's is the only DVD Edition available of this film. LOVE FROM A STRANGER is based on the Frank Vosper play of Agatha Christie's short story "Philomel Cottage." Indeed, it feels a little stage bound and static. The plot is simple enough. Working girl Ann Harding wins the lottery, throws her fiance over for Basil Rathbone, and they move to a secluded cottage in the country, where.... But that would be telling, and one doesn't do that with Agatha Christie. It's enough to say that young Ann might have been better off if she had patched things up with her intended before marrying stranger Rathbone. There are a few items you'll have to endure before you get to the rewarding ending. The transfer print this dvd was taken from was in pretty rough shape, and I couldn't say for sure that it contains one unblemished frame. There's also a lot of background noise on the soundtrack. Rathbone's character travels the steepest arc I recall ever seeing. If you don't buy into it (I did) I can imagine his acting would be enough for someone to turn this one off. LOVE FROM A STRANGER is worth sticking with to the end. I thought I'd figured it out and the movie still managed to throw in a surprise or two that caught me unawares. (Double Disaster) (Hell Yeah!!!) (Video Game Based Movies) (worst martial art movie ever (it doesnt deserve a star if i have other ratings)) I saw two movies in 1994. There is no question in my mind: Double Dragon>Schindler's List. BAR NONE. After the disaster that had been the "Super Mario Bros." movie, "Double Dragon" had the chance to set future game-to-video adaptations on the right track. It certainly seemed simple enough: with a slew of "action heroes" left over from the `80s and a premise that was all about kicking butt, where could it go wrong? Well, let me count the ways in which it became just another casualty of the `adaptation wars'... In the movie, Los Angeles has been ripped apart by an earthquake, leaving the city a deadly fighting ground for various gangs and a struggling police force. Evil billionaire Koga Shuko (Robert Patrick, "Terminator 2") plans to utilize an ancient and magical artefact known as the Double Dragon to empower himself so he can take over the city. One half is easily obtained...but the other is in the hands of karate-practicing brothers Jimmy (Mark Dacasos, "Brotherhood of the Wolf") and Billy Lee (Scott Wolf, "The Nine"), who must add escaping from Shuko's henchmen to their list of tournament-losing, gang-fleeing worries. I won't even get into how much the film's tone and storyline deviates from the video games, but I'll warn that the film's age-appeal stops at 10. Think of it as "Power Rangers" without the costumes and the giant robots: Jimmy and Billy spend less time fighting than they do running and cracking bad jokes, and when they do fight, it's against slobbering gang members and a guy in the worst monster costume I've ever seen. While the adventure aspects of the film are decently done for any preteen audience, things like acting and having a decent script ("I just want total domination of one major American city! Is that too much to ask?!") are best left ignored by those of us who know better. In the film's defence, the fight choreographer apparently took a page out of Jackie Chan's playbook and had the fights incorporate the environment more than most other action films back then did - using a street cone as a weapon, stopping an attacker with a swinging car door, etc. In addition, Mark Dacasos' legitimate talent for martial arts shows: though there's no decent one-on-one showdown that lets him shine, his skill and athleticism are apparent even before he became a big-time player. Scott Wolf, however, is less of a worker. The guy was never a martial artist to begin with and it doesn't look like he had any training for the film: most of his moves consist of sloppy-looking kicks that any kid in front of a TV can do, shoving, and...well, running. As an adaptation, it's unfaithful, and as an action movie, it's kind of lame; throw in Shuko's ridiculous hairstyle and the knowledge that it was directed by a man who had before (and since) only directed pop concerts and video packages, and you've got yourself a film that's easy to hate. Gamers, put it out of your minds - this one is lost to oblivion. This is the movie world's LL Cool J!!!! If it weren't for Mac and Me, I'd say this movie was the greatest of all time!!! Most video game based movies are bombs and this one stands out above some of the ones that cames before it.
