My purchasing the DVDs was to use one as an informational and training tool; and give the other as a gift to my local director. Was I pleasantly surprised to see our own Legacy Executive Director, Tommy Damigella, being interviewed and discussing his family's involvement in the early years of Tupperware,in the Boston area!
Covers the beginning of Earl Tupper's product idea and the manufacturing of Tupperware. How Brownie Wise and friends through using the home party made it a household phenomenon, in the 50's&60's. Full of fun clips of Jubilees' and great interviews from early dealers. 』
(It's an interesting story and worth watching this short DVD.) 『The history of the product was more interesting than I thought it would be. A woman in Detroit (Brownie Wise) saw it at Hudson's Department Store and wrote the company how she felt the party idea would be more lucrative. They end up working together and his handy kitchen items became wanted by housewives across America. She helped women have a way to make money at home. Sadly, her story doesn't have a happy ending once the business relationship between her and Mr. Tupper soured.
I never knew that selling Tupperware made some woman a decent income, some even rich.』

(An interesting but bizarre story) 『There were times during this documentary that I found myself staring at the screen in disbelief, mouth agape. Watching frumpy housewives digging madly for buried treasure is not something you see everyday, and it is not something one easily forgets.
It reminds those of us who are too young to remember clearly that once upon a time, before the patents expired, that Tupperware was the one&only product of its kind, and you couldn't get it in stores. Now days, Earl Tupper's burping lid is a commonplace feature on nearly all plastic food storage&can been seen on the shelves of almost any store with kitchenware. Back then, it was Tupperware or nothing. Likewise, any number of products are now marketing through the home party model, but such a concept did not really exist until Brownie Wise convinced Earl Tupper that his product would be best marketed through the home¬ in stores.
There are several themes in this documentary, not the least of which is the phenomenon of the female salesperson, managing her own inventory&accounts. Women had worked plenty (especially during World War II), but not in this mode of sales. Working this way gave housewives, who might otherwise not have worked at all, the confidence to believe that they could be competent businesswomen, led by the example of Brownie Wise. This no doubt helped lay the groundwork for today's modern working woman.
A darker theme is the struggle between Earl Tupper&Brownie Wise over day-to-day control of the marketing side of the business. The documentary points out that Brownie Wise made sure to surround herself with male executives, not female, because she did not want any other women stealing the spotlight from her. Brownie Wise's desire for publicity was undeniable, and eventually this nutured a resentment within Earl Tupper that ultimately led to his termination of Wise.
For me, the most memorable moments are the scenes at headquarters in Orlando Florida. They are memorable for the most part because they tend to be sort of creepy&bizarre. The Jubilees, with their wacky&outlandish themes, serve as a reminder that there was some pretty strange stuff going on in the 1950's, and in this case it was all about selling some innocuous plastic containers.
It may be weird, but you can't get away from it. I ended up inheriting some of my grandmother's Tupperware. God only knows how old it is --- I would guess probably about 50 years old --- but it still works just fine&I cannot justify getting rid of it. I will probably unload it on my daughter in a few decades when the opportunity avails itself. How much of this stuff is clattering around in the nooks&crannies of our homes? It looks like it could last forever if we don't deliberately melt it. For as ubiquitous a product as Tupperware is, most of us really have no idea of the history behind it. It is an interesting story indeed.』

(Oh Tom, You Devil) 『What a fun movie. Great cast. Costumes really add to the atmosphere. And the music is terrific. "Tom Jones" is in my top ten movies I have seen, what a rush. And a great story line. You can't help rooting for this rake. Love the scene with the oysters. Buy this flic, you cannot go wrong.』
(It's a delightfully good time...) 『It has charm and humor to spare, that is for sure, and it is rich with wonderful performances and witty dialog but calling it the best movie of the year seems like a stretch. I so adore it, which goes without saying, and I enjoy every minute, but it is just a good movie that provides a good time, and it never feels like more than that.
Does that make any sense?
The film follows Tom, the adopted son of a British squire. He's a lady-charmer of sorts, planting his seed wherever he may lie and loving every minute of it. When Tom falls for the beautiful Sophie, the daughter of a neighboring squire, things begin to heat up for Tom. Jealousies within the family cause Tom to eventual flee only to get himself in more and more trouble. He's a kindhearted and well intentioned young man who just doesn't know when to stop.
`Tom Jones' is a very funny movie that sports a stellar cast of comedic performances, as well as some touching and sincere ones. Albert Finney received his first of many Oscar nominations for this film, and he was definitely deserving (it was such a good year in this category). He is charming and witty, enough so to make even Tom's most reprehensible of actions forgeable. High Griffiths and Edith Evans ham it up in their roles, providing an abundance of comic relief, and Susannah York is stunning and beautifully tempered as Sophie.
There isn't a sore spot to be found within the acting at all.
The script is also delightfully written, engaging and funny throughout, sporting some very memorable moments and some intriguing character development. I loved the voice over narration, which provided the film with a literary feel that complemented its comedic tone. It is very well constructed and wonderfully put directed.
The fact remains that while I cannot find a single flaw I just cannot name it the best of the year. I think when you consider the films that were provided to us in 1963 `Tom Jones' kind of falls towards the middle of the list. Films like `Hud' or `This Sporting Life' were much stronger works and much more poignant and influential. `8½' is another example of a film that is much smarter and much more technically proficient than `Tom Jones'. This film is splendid and entertaining but its well does not run as deep as some of the years other offerings. Top ten maybe (I'd give it an A-), but not top five and definitely not numberone.
Oh well, it is till a wonderful film and one that I will continue to watch and enjoy for years to come.』

Unfortunately, over the years, I forgot the title and somehow got it mixed up with "The Disorderly Orderly", starring Jerry Lewis. Decades later, I finally located it on Amazon. It was very expensive, especially for an old black-and-white movie (and with the shipping cost to New Zealand), but if you enjoy Norman Wisdom's work as much as I do, it is worth the price.
It tells the story of Norman Pitkin (Wisdom), a butcher's assistant who causes havoc wherever he goes. Banned from the hospital where he was visiting his boss, he ends up in the children's ward, where he is the only one who can get through to a young, orphaned girl who is in shock. He promises to visit her again, and has to go through all sorts of subterfuge, posing as a doctor, a nurse, a patient, a dental student, a St John's Ambulance officer and a trombonist to get back into the hospital to keep his promise. There is heaps of chaos and hilarious slapstick comedy, as well as a wonderfully heart-warming story of selfless love.
An extra bonus on the DVD is a selection of Norman Wisdom's singing performances (audio only, unfortunately, but still excellent added value for Norman's fans).』
(Grimsdale: How long will the ambulance be? - Norman: Oh, about 18 feet!) 『After appearing on three early BBC-TV sitcoms, Norman Wisdom made a string of comedies for the Rank Organsation. A STITCH IN TIME is one of the later pictures. Here, a hospital visit after a butcher shop accident fnds Norman creating his usual chaos. He also tries to help a child who hasn't spoken since her folks died in a plane crash.
Fans of Sir Norman will also enjoy TELEVISTA's edition of his 1956 comedy, UP IN THE WORLD.
