Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (The Weakest...but still pretty good.) 『This is easily the weakest Black Crowes release, but still well worth checking out. There are a handful of classics - Good Friday, One Mirror Too Many and Evil Eye are the best. The rest are solid, if unimpressive, Black Crowes fare. I agree with the other reviewers who describe this as unfocused and erratic. This is not the most energetic or engaging of their releases. If you are looking for the definitive Black Crowes release go directly to "The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion." That is their masterpiece.』
(Rock 'N' Roll with Alot of Soul!!!) 『Another Great Black Crowes CD!!! This disk is filled with great tracks!"Good Friday, One Mirror Too Many, Blackberry, (Only) Halfway To Everywhere, Bring On Bring On, How Much For Your Wings?, Let Me Share The Ride, Better When You're Not Alone"and the list goes on... Every Track has Soul and filled with Rock 'N' Roll. What other band can do this??? You will not be disappointed with this CD. It is just AWESOME!!!』
(Not for most listeners) 『I see more copies of this Crowes album in the used CD stores than any other.
The hard core Crowes' cadre may love this album, but most people won't find this one reachable. I'll agree with the other reviewers that the album seems more subdued. If you like the hard rocking sound of the Crowes on the radio, one of the other releases will probably be a better starting place.』
(Add a half when it grows on you.) 『Still with their ultimate lineup (C. Robinson, R. Robinson, Marc Ford, Steve Gorman, Eddie Harsch and Johnny Colt) intact after making two masterpieces, the Black Crowes made Three Snakes. As such, the playing on the album is top notch again. The feel of the album is a little less aggressive than Amorica, but there are plenty of rockin tunes.
This seems to be the "grower" in the Crowes catalog, where it takes a while for songs to assert themselves. While that's often a more rewarding thing than the opposite (an album that feels immediately familiar, but lacks longevity), the songs do suffer slightly from a lack of strong hooks and come off a little dry at times. The ballads, such as the pretty Girl From a Pawnshop and odd How Much For Your Wings? break away from the pack easiest and all the songs become rewarding in time. This was the third and last album from the band with this lineup, and during that time noone else in rock and roll was better.
』
(Crucial Crowes Listening) 『OK, so you call yourself a Crowes fan because you like "Remedy" and "Hard To Handle"? Well, dig a little deeper and start with this disc. It's got some absolutely crucial Crowes songs that are standouts in their catalog or in concert. I hate to bash other's reviews but this disc is not overly noisy, it's just a little different- in fact, it's somewhat quiet in many parts. Chris' vocals are top-notch here, and never rambling or over-bearing as he can sometimes be. Overall it's got a vibe of "understanding" to it... something they desperately tried NOT to have with the free-wheeling, bad-assness of "Amorica". Understanding is NOT a bad thing here at all folks, so enjoy the whole disc as one, as it is THE most over-looked in their catalog.
1) Under A Mountain- 10/10 Typical great lead-off song about coming to grips with love and/or sex. Smooth guitars layer a slow steady vibe. Drums rock out nicely behind it all.
2) Good Friday- 10/10 One of my fav Crowes songs of all time. Heard them play this song LIVE on the actual Good Friday in an old church, so maybe I'm partial, but this might be the coolest break-up song ever. But not a wussy break-up point of view either, which is cool.
3) Nebakenezer- 10/10 Cool riff. Great drums. Vox are money. It's LOUD! And it's a bout drugs. What more could you ask for?
4) One Mirror Too Many- 8.5/10 Another drug warning. Looks like the boys are learning from their days of growing beards and dropping out on drugs (not that that was ever too bad for them musically)
5) Blackberry- 8/10 Easy to dismiss this one since it was the single, but a cool song. Funky. Chris' raspy vocals call back to the days of "Sometimes Salvation"
6) Girl From A Pawnshop- 9.5/10 Can almost picture him in a country bar singing this one. Cool story about a girl and a letter and the reality surrounding her while reading it. Ending is stellar.
7) (Only)Halfway To Everywhere- 8/10 Funky. Weird vocal effects. Upbeat. Could have easily ended up on Amorica. Got some horns from the Dirty Dozen helping out.
8) Bring On, Bring On- 8/10 Acoutic heavy. Gospel type chorus. OK on it's own... but sets up the next song rather well, which is...
9) How Much For Your Wings 10/10 Another acoustic tune that gets interrupted monetarily by some drums/ guitar and hand-clapping. Certainly nothing for some readers to moan about. Killer guitar that somehow is uplifting even though it deals with the sadness of loss. Brother Rich helps out on the vocals trading off behind Chris's singing of the verses.
10) Let Me Share The Ride- 7.5/10 Pretty standard road song. Sort of out of place at this point in the disc.
11) Better When You're Not Alone- 9.5/10 Seems like it would have fit perfect behind "Wings". Praises the joys of love and how it makes their world better. Never corny, just honest. Good upbeat ending.
12) Evil Eye- 10/10 Wow... What to say aboiut this song. Lyrics make you re-think you're whole outlook and disposition on love, beliefs, life and the world around you. Piercing guitar on top of some awesome drumming. Lyric: "Do you have in you to even try?" That should also be said for this whole album. Do try it! 』

Like the first volume, we have a beautiful tenor voice treating us to some rarely heard arias from operas not often performed outside of Russia. Grishko has good control of his voice which is a somewhat light and agile one that is free from strain. Probably the only familiar pieces to non-Russian listeners would be the brief orchestral excerpts from Glinka's A LIFE FOR THE TSAR and Polovtsian March from Borodin's PRINCE IGOR so listening is a treat in and of itself.
The two strengths of this recording are similar to those of the first volume: there is a variety to the music on the disc and Grisko's overall performance. While this is a good disc, it is not quite as strong as the first collection. The orchestral performances are somewhat inconsistent. Also the selections themselves do not have a great impact, at least in comparison with those of the first set. Still, this recording at a price that is more than reasonable will add variety to any operatic library. 』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Nicely weird) 『Given what we know about Owen Wilson's subsequent career after this 1999 low-key serial killer flick, you may have a hard time not smirking a bit at his screen presence. It's the same here as in later flicks like "Wedding Crashers." The guy has one speed, evidently. Still, it's fun to watch Sheryl Crow and Dwight Yoakum acting instead of singing. The tale is downbeat, no gore. The ending is unlikely, though. Not a bad waste of time.』
(Laid back killer-thriller) 『Vann Siegert (Owen Wilson) is a laid-back drifter. Approaching a small seaside town, he runs into heroin addict Laurie Bloom (Sheryl Crow) in a dive bar. Taking her for a drive, he offers her a drink from his special flask ... amaretto and poison. Leaving the body in a roadside restroom, he continues into town.
Once in town, Vann takes a room from the Durwins. Doug Durwin (Brian Cox, the best Hannibal Lector from 'Manhunter') takes to Vann immediately, but Jane Durwin (Mercedes Ruel, The Fisher King) is cold at first. Doug is quite fond of young HS football player Gene, and is deeply affected when Gene goes missing. Gene is a victim of Vann's, though Vann broke two of his own rules. (Don't give a drink to someone you know, and don't do anything in the town you live in) Doug gets Vann a job at the local Post Office, where Vann meets Ferrin (Janeane Garofalo), who smokes and drinks, two things Vann doesn't do. Vann and Ferrin hit it off anyway, and Vann settles into his new residence and new life. But there are parts of his old life he won't give up, and the killing continues.
'The Minus Man' is not a fast-paced thriller. It's a casual stroll through Vann's life, narrated by him, revealing his personal thoughts on life, other people, and killing. Vann suffers from fainting spells, in which two detectives from his past haunt him. Det. Blair (Dwight Yoakam, who proved he could act in 'Sling Blade') and Det. Graves (Dennis Haysbert) appear in his subconscious, asking questions about his reason for killing. Even Van himself is befuddled at some of his actions, and often uses humor instead of explanations in his answers.
Owen Wilson always plays such a laid-back role (Meet The Parents, Zoolander, Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, etc.) that it was a surprise to see him cast as a serial killer. But the casual pace of the movie, combined with Vann's tranquil narration of his motives, is fully suited to Wilson's characteristic relaxed persona. The acting is very good and the characters are interesting. The plot is terrific and the twists surprising and inspired. This is a great movie to rent or buy. Enjoy! 』
(An Epiphany.) 『Films about serial killers, in my humble opinion, have a tendency to be convoluted. They either use the gimmicks and glamor of Hollywood( Casting Selma Hayak as Martha Beck, the lovelorn nurse, hefty in girth, but not in morality)to seduce your sensibilities, or create an unpalatable monster( Laura Prepon as Karla Holmoka, a sadist with a beautiful face). Owen Wilson recreates the serial killer as a character. He placates you with a charming, articulate persona, then proceeds to blindside the viewer with acts of non-violent murder. He never attempts to justify his actions with rationality, or some purpose based complex. He is...as he says...empty. Its difficult for me to imagine a man like Owen Wilson as a serial killer. His face seems so open, and inviting, his kindness appears sincere and non-threatening. Perhaps this is the genius of the casting choice. He is the Elephant in the room, with his complete lack of emotional flux. For me, The Minus Man redefined the face of inhumanity, by showing us how the seemingly normal ones always fall through the cracks. Highly recommended.』
(great unknown film) 『great film - creative and creepy. filmed in a warm, calming manner that offsets the twisted behavior of the lead character. well worth a view.』
(Der Minus Mann from Germany) 『This is one of those movies that you think will really be good. The storyline has enough to make you suspend your disbelief. Owen Wilson is so cool. The soundtrack is amazing as well.』 『"I've never done anything violent to anyone," says the mild-mannered Vann Siegert, "Just the minimum that was necessary." Indeed, if you have to get knocked off by a serial killer, Vann (Owen Wilson) is definitely your man. Just a quick, sweet swig from a silver flask of poisoned amaretto and you're out, with a narcoleptic slump into eternal slumber. There's no taunting or torturing; he's friendly about the whole thing. You can see Vann almost--almost--wishing his victims wouldn't take that final sip. He doesn't hold any particular grudge against these people; rather, as he puts it, "I take the natural momentum of a person and draw it toward me." If someone looks like they're on a crash course--like the boozy, asthmatic heroin addict played convincingly by Sheryl Crow, her acting debut--he merely accelerates the process.
Wilson proves to be a mesmerizing if unlikely serial killer, his flat, Midwestern delivery ringing more sincere than sinister, more Charlie Brown than Charles Manson. His voiceovers purportedly allow us into the mind of a killer, but what we hear isn't all that different from what we see. Vann isn't faking the nice-guy veneer, heisa nice guy, with this one little quirk. Clearly, this is not your typical edge-of-your-seat thriller, but the slow, dreamy pace is nonetheless entrancing. There are moments of intense grace and humor here, too. Janeane Garofalo breaks away from the smart-aleck mold to portray a postal employee smitten with Vann, and Mercedes Ruehl takes a compelling turn as his troubled landlady. "I like the detail of a thing," Vann says. "Especially if it's got a purpose." While we may not know for certain whether this film has a purpose, the details dare you to stop watching, even for an instant.--Brangien Davis』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Excellent!) 『Christopher Penczak is perhaps one of the most approachable authors on the subject of Wicca and Magick today. In Instant Magick, Penczak describes methods and approaches to everyday spellcraft and magickal approaches to the little - and not so little - things in life. Whener Penczak excells in comparison to many other authors is that any of his books, this one included, will provide a basic background in the theory and practice of magick, as well as enough of a "it's not the form, it's the intent" reminder that the new practitioner can pick it up and feel confident out the gate that they aren't doing things "wrong", while the experienced practitioner can pick it up and integrate elements of Penczak's approach into their own knowing that Pencak himself is an eclectic practitioner whose practices appear to resemble more of a collage than rigid doctrine, and he did the same thing.
Whether new or experienced, there is something here for you, and the writing style is superb.』
(A must-have magick book) 『Instant Magick is the catchy title used in this book to make you pay attention to it. But once you pick it up, you will quickly realize that this book is even more than just gimmicky phrase. This book is the real deal. Whether you are a beginner or versed on magick, this is a book that you should have in your esoteric library.
Right from the introduction, Penczak reveals what he means by Instant Magick. Instant doesn't mean easy or quick, and Magick is not the kind of "stuff" you watch in a movie. Instant Magick is the weaving of "the natural energies of life through your will, words, and visions into a transformation."
This book is only 216 pages long, but it has plenty of information, and exercises in every chapter. The first chapter answers the obvious question, What Is Instant Magick? and the next chapter explains what are the components that makes up a spell. Here Panczak talks about alter consciousness, focusing will, directing energy, thoughtforms and magick rituals.
I found chapter three to be very interesting. In this chapter, he explains a few of the paradigms underlying several magick traditions. He covers concepts such as The Five Elements, The World Three, The Web of Life, The Seven Chakras, The Planetary Correspondences, and briefly mentions the Tree of Life, which combines some of the former paradigms.
Then there is chapter four, which in a way is the heart of this book. In this chapter, Penczak presents a small grimmore of instant spells. These cover from the mundane such as Parking Space - a spell to find an open parking space, to the sublime such as Spirit Gate - a spell to open a temporary gateway between worlds. But this is not all, because chapter five explains the art an science behind spellcrafting.
Chapter six and seven covers more advanced concept such as meditation magick, inner circle casting, meditative rituals, empowering objects, location spells, and healing. The final chapter covers the role of magick as it becomes part of your life.
The appendix of this book makes a wealth of information very accessible. The correspondences charts cover information such as elements, planets, colors, elementals, angels, deities, and other spirits.
There is definitely something for everyone in this book. For the beginner, this is a good starting point that may shine a light on the path that is better suited for him or her. And for the more experienced, this is a good quick reference book.
Other books from Penczak: Ascension Magick: Ritual, Myth&Healing for the New Aeon, The Mystic Foundation: Understanding and Exploring the Magical Universe, Spirit Allies: Meet Your Team from the Other Side』
(Solid intro for the beginner) 『In Instant Magick, Christopher Penczak gets to the bare bones of magical practice. He gives you techniques that don't require fancy tools or regalia. His writing is clear and friendly and gets to the point quickly. He gives you the three basic ingredients of magic - altering consciousness, focusing will, and directing energy and exercises to develop the skills needed for each step.
Basically, the word "instant" in the title is a bit of a misnomer. It is referring to the fact that the only tool that you need to perform magic is your mind. You will still have to put out the mental energy to do it, and the author gives you a solid foundation to start from.
It has a heavy Wiccan (i.e. continual mention of the Rede) and new age flavor. However, Mr. Penczak presents five different paradigms from which to practice magic. In this way, he encourages the reader to make their own way steering clear of dogma if they so choose. He includes visualizations to introduce you to each paradigm and relate to its energy.
The advanced practitioner may find very little of use here. This is definitely a practical magic book for the beginner. He encourages starting out small and building confidence in magical ability and gives the reader the tools to do that. There are appendices with short lists of correspondences, which are not comprehensive, but they do provide a starting point for your spells.
He clearly states that this system is not meant to replace more elaborate techniques. The focus is to teach the aspiring magician the energy behind spellcraft. He also demonstrates that you don't have to break the bank buying spell ingredients to do successful magic. 』
(An Instant Classic) 『This is my first book written by Penczak, and I liked it so much that I went ahead and bought two more of his books by the time I had read up to the third chapter.
Anyone who reads books about magick knows that the market is flooded with authors that are all fluff and no substance. And then of course, there are those on the other extreme that write about magick in a manner that is utterly dry, condescending, and devoid of everything that makes magick worth learning in the first place.
Similar in style to Scott Cunningham, Penczak is one of those rare authors in the field that can take a potentially complicated subject and present it to the reader in a delightfully simple and practical manner, while clearly speaking from a wide breadth of knowledge and experience. He maintains a fast and friendly pace throughout each chapter that not only explains the concepts of Instant Magick but inspires you to START USING THEM INSTANTLY!
More than once I found myself torn between putting down the book to try out the next sample spell or meditation, or reading on to the next chapter.
Although more experienced practitioners are sure to find a lot of familiar material here, I doubt they'll find such a wide variety of it, contained in such an easily digestible package.
For newcomers, especially Wiccans, this book is simply a "must have." I certainly wish I it had been around when I started out!
So why only 4 stars? Well, I want to make clear that in my opinion, Penczak is a 5 Star Author. I just felt that he missed the mark slightly with this title.
Here's Why:
First and foremost, a fair amount of the book is actually a collection of meditations and breathing exercises that are probably best (or most easily) performed at home or at least with some level of privacy. In this sense, the title is perhaps a little misleading.
I wanted to see more examples of how Penczak himself performs Instant Magick in "real world" situations - while stuck on a crowded subway car or standing in shopping lines, etc. While he certainly provides the tools and the encouragement to do so yourself, I would have liked to hear more from his own day-to-day experiences in which spells are cast "instantly" while dealing with the hustle and bustle of the external world.
Which leads me to my next minor criticism, while he encourages the reader to find their own personal and spontaneous style of practice, the contents of the book are predominantly restricted to innovations on Wiccan traditions. This is of course great for Wiccans, but I would have liked to see a little more variety and creativity in his examples. I think some mention of Chaos Magick or perhaps a little advice on how one could employ popular culture as part of their spellwork (if the reader is so inclined) would have been appropriate here. For a book that is meant to present a new, adaptive approach to magick, it lacked some of the modern creativity I had hoped for.
Lastly, there was, in my opinion, an over-abundance of traditional magickal correspondence lists (astrological, herbal, stones, Deities, etc) throughout the book followed by a whole section of Correspondence Charts in the Appendix. Although he includes these lists with the intention of giving the reader a variety of options to pick and choose from, in my opinion, these lists may potentially divert the reader from far more vast resources - their own imagination and creativity.
For most experienced practitioners, these lists are already well-known territory. For beginners, they are probably better learned elsewhere, more throughly, and prior to employing them with the techniques of "Instant Magick."
I personally felt these last pages would have been much better spent discussing in more detail the potential of using one's imagination to forge new paths in the realm of magickal practice rather than picking and choosing from already well-traveled routes.
If I sound excessively critical, it's only because this book is in fact so well written, that for me, the few imperfections it has were all the more noticeable.
But all criticism aside, this book is just too good to pass up. Don't miss it!』
(Great ideas, very creative) 『This is a pretty decent book. Very creative with the ways he pulls together several systems. It goes get a little spread out though as it does seem like he just adds some filler. Overall it is good to see someone taking the powers of imagination seriously as he does here. Worth a read or two.』 『What if you could practice magick anytime, without the use of ceremonial spells, altars, or magickal tools? Items such as candles, special ingredients, and exotic symbols are necessary to perform many types of magick, but these items aren't always feasible, attainable, or even available. The purest form of magick-tapping into your own energetic awareness to create change-is accessible simply through the power of your will.
Popular author Christopher Penczak explains how to weave natural energies into every facet of life by inspiring readers to explore their own individual willpower. This book features personalized techniques used to weed out any unwanted, unhealthy, or unnecessary desires to find a true, balanced magickal being. Penczak's innovative, modern spellcasting techniques utilize meditation, visualization, words, and intent in any situation, at any time. The results can seem instantaneous, and the potential limitless.

If this is a notion novel to you, then you will want to read this book. The author has performed a service by carefully and comprehensively documenting where and how China has been operating in the 3rd world. It should be a real eye opener to most readers who have not been following China.
While the author was indefatigable in chasing down every Chinese acitivity in remote areas of the world and describing them with careful fidelity, he was less successful in remaining objective as he drew his conclusions. The tone frequently hint at something negative on the underside of the Chinese even if not verified by his data. He seemed unable to give China full credit for whatever they are doing right. The book seemed full of tentative "yes, but" conclusions that I found frustrating. If there was a dark side to China's international relations, I wish the author would simply say so and back it up with his otherwise careful research.
On the other hand when he attempted to contrast what China was doing right with what the Bush Administration had been doing wrong, he was surprisingly mealy mouthed, never quite calling the neoconpoop unilateralism for the damage it did to American prestige and the respect the rest of the world once held for the U.S.
In sum, I recommend this book on a subject that has not been covered to this depth, a subject that will become increasingly important to foreign policy wonks, especially in Washington. I would simply discount some of his limp conclusions and pay attention to his field research.』
(Extremely Good Effort for One Mind--Missing Some Links) 『I first studied China, the "Middle Kingdom," in 1975 when I found Mao relevant to my primary interest, understanding and addressing revolution in all its forms. The image above is the heart of my graduate-level quick look at how the PRC exercised foreign influence back then. In addition, my father was a Chinese "guest" in 1967-1968 after pirate militia sank his trimaran enroute from Saigon to Hong Kong, a story told in Yachtsman in Red China.
The author has done a superb job of observing, interpreting, and documenting. I take away one star for a certain amount of naiveté and incompleteness--the book ends somewhat weakly--but I totally disagree with those who consider this book disorganized or less than four stars in merit. I found the book absorbing, consistent with my own recent observations tracking Chinese irregular warfare including both electronic warfare and waging peace in Africa and South America, and over-all, I cannot think of a finer book for American diplomats, politicians, and students of serious mien.
The author opens with a very personal and relevant account of how he watched the fall of US influence and the rise of Chinese influence in Thailand, marking the late 1990's as the time of change. To his surprise, when he asked US diplomats about this, he found them unaware. Today, they are aware, but powerless in the face of a White House that under Dick Cheney has totally destroyed the policy process (for an account of how this was done, see The Price of Loyalty: George W. Bush, the White House, and the Education of Paul O'Neill.
He follows the 1990's in Thailand with a very compelling comparison of how George Bush was heckled by Australian senators and booed by the Australian public in 2003, while a few days later the Chinese leader Hu Jin Tao was welcomed as a hero. He points out that Australians now see US unilateral militarism as a threat to Australian peace and prosperity fully co-equal to the threat of radical Islam. For one balanced take on foreign public perceptions on America, see The Eagle's Shadow: Why America Fascinates and Infuriates the World
He properly credits Joe Nye with the term "soft power" but I am in agreement with the anthropologists and others who now choose not to use that term because global presence has to be managed as a Whole of Government/Whole Earth enterprise, something Stewart Brand and others understood decades before the rest of us. Of all Stewart's books, my favorite remains Clock Of The Long Now: Time And Responsibility: The Ideas Behind The World's Slowest Computer, a book I fear the Chinese appreciate vastly more than the two idiot parties now looting the US commonwealth on behalf of their Wall Street masters.
The author says that the Chinese think of their primary power as everything outside the military and security realm. See my image above for a nuanced understanding that is still valid--the names have changed, but the Chinese are simply playing a modern version of Middle Kingdom ubber alles.
The author reviews the mis-steps under Mao (Great Leap Forward, Cultural Revolution, export of revolution), and then gives proper credit to Deng Xiao Ping as the transitional and transformational leader who adopted pragmatic reforms. The deal China made, in substituting enhanced nationalism for absolute communism, was "make money, not trouble" and all would be allowed.
The new leaders are college graduates and in many cases have graduate degrees. The end of the Cold War freed China from fear of Russia, and now China is focusing on the Second World. For good reasons why, see The Second World: Empires and Influence in the New Global Order
The new era leaders clearly understand that global problems impact on them, and they must pursue global solutions.
Here are the 20 elements of China's global strategy as I understood them from the author's excellent account.
01 Stability in the 14 countries on its borders 02 Cease military confrontation (e.g. Spratleys), use non-military assets 03 Go after resources all over the world 04 Create ring of allies as buffer against US and other interventionists 05 Non-interference in affairs of others 06 "Born-again Multinationalism" (Susan Shirk) 07 Cooperative agreements (7 with Mexico, 14 with Venezuela, etc) 08 Help those the US shirks or slights (Mexico, Venezuela, Bolivia, Uzbeckistan...) 09 Offer socio-economic model in which state, not market, is steering 10 Focus on small nations ignored by US and others 11 Cultural and public diplomacy ****needs its own book**** 12 Direct recruitment of overseas Chinese in 1980's, used their wealth, $30B or 7% of external investment, as seed crystal for 1990's boom 13 Aid, trade, easy loans, investment (a fraction of what US does, but they get more mileage out of theirs by how and when and why they do) 14 Easy fit with corruption and deals outside the rule of law 15 Lots of construction including free buildings for headquarters (the author does not say this, I do: "no extra charge for the electronic bugs") 16 Junkets to China, junkets with issue training for the staffs 17 Exporting men (this could have used more attention--Argentina will be majority Chinese by 2020 or so) 18 Exporting visual media (#2 in the world right now) 19 Rolling Taiwan back, everyone withdrawing recognition 20 Direct influence both good and bad (good: anti-drugs, some effort on human trafficking, on disease; bad: illegal lumber harvests in Myanmar, Indonesia)
The last three chapters are not as arresting, but still good: IX: America's soft power goes soft, both Clinton and Bush killed us overseas X: Shanghai Cooperation Organization, giving US "wedgies" all over the world XI: Rest of World waiting for two things from USA: live up to our values and stop our bad policies
The author is a big naïve (or less informed) when he lambasts the Chinese for supporting dictators and fails to realize that our two corrupt political parties love 42 of the 44 dictators as their best pals (see Breaking the Real Axis of Evil: How to Oust the World's Last Dictators by 2025).
Serious book by a serious person for serious people. Well done.
My last four allowed links: Election 2008: Lipstick on the Pig (Substance of Governance; Legitimate Grievances; Candidates on the Issues; Balanced Budget 101; Call to Arms: Fund We Not Them; Annotated Bibliography) Running on Empty: How the Democratic and Republican Parties Are Bankrupting Our Future and What Americans Can Do About It The Battle for the Soul of Capitalism Collective Intelligence: Creating a Prosperous World at Peace』
(Good, but a bit disorganized) 『I thought this was a good study of something that needs to be discussed more, particularly in the U.S. Overall there are some really useful anecdotes and this should be an eye-opener to Americans.
However, some of the sections seemed like the author stitched together shorter articles he had written previously. I think providing headers for subsections, lists for certain things (like China's tools for public diplomacy), and organizing the book or chapters by regions of the world rather than mixing everything would have made it a bit better organized.
I was also disappointed with the author's treatment of the China-Burma relationship. As a longtime Burma watcher, I have followed this relationship and have never seen any reason for viewing China's role in Burma as anything other than obstructionist. Even before the recent protests in Burma, it was clear that China was the main obstacle to getting any sort of UN Security Council resolution on the country. I was surprised that the author did not explore this more, since it seems to suggest that China is LESS willing to support changes near home, particularly when such changes could lead to instability, than abroad, like in Sudan where it has sent peacekeepers and has not played such an obstructive role in the UN Security COuncil.
Bottom line: the book is worth reading and tells of fascinating events, but I hope there are more on this subject in the future.』
(Charm offensive) 『It's very very hard to put down I enjoyed it very much and found it intersting.

(A political discourse of Chinese Soft Power) 『In the academic field, many scholars of Chinese studies and international relations are studying the various impacts of the rise of China. Will China upset the existing international norms and world order? Will the boom of Chinese economy threaten the economic growth and environmental condition of other countries? Will China challenge the American hegemony?
Indeed, Joshua Kurlantzick attempts to answer the above questions in his latest work - Charm Offensive: How China's Soft Power is Transforming the World.
At the very beginning of his book, Kurlantzick defines soft power from the Chinese perspective as "soft power means anything outside of the military and security realm, including not only popular culture and public diplomacy but also more coercive economic and diplomatic levers like aid and investment and participation in multilateral organizations", which is different from Joseph Nye's values, ideals and norms.
Chinese government has paid more attention in building up its soft power, mainly because of the theory of "China Threat", the concerns of economic and technological interdependencies between China and other countries, and the Chinese regional hegemonic interests. According to Kurlantzick, China would like to use "peaceful development" in order to replace or fade out the "China threat"; China would like to check the unilateral American moves by using its soft power rather than hard power (direct political and military confrontation) since China treasures its economic and technological interdependencies with the United States, Europe and Japan; China would also like to establish its influence in Southeast Asia through soft power, which can minimize the suspicions among Southeast Asian countries.
Kurlantzick carried out interviews and case studies about the rising Chinese influence in various developing countries. China sets up Confucians institutes from Kenya, South Korea, Uzbekistan to Australia; promotes Chinese language in Southeast Asian countries by offering wide range of scholarships and academic exchanges, provides diplomatic professional training to officials in many developing countries, builds up close relations with Chinese diaspora; gives economic aid and loans to poor countries for building economic infrastructures and social facilities; last but not least, encourages Chinese investment in developing countries for boosting their local economic development.
However, not all the Chinese influences can be regarded as good to others. Kurlantzick points out that China also exports labour, environmental and governance problems to others. Chinese firms often neglect the safety of workers and pay little salary to the local workers. In order to avoid labour strike, Chinese firms sometimes employ Chinese to replace the local workers. Besides, some Chinese firms launch illegal logging in Burma and Indonesia. Chinese government built dams on the upper course of Mekong River which have threatened the Cambodian fish stocks and fertilize arable lands in the lower course of the river. In addition, China tolerates authoritarian rule in Cambodia, Laos and Angola for its unconditional aids and loans while the World Bank and International Monetary Fund always demand the recipient countries to comply good governance. China is also criticized for its non-intervention policy in Darfur which finally caused humanitarian disaster.
Kurlantzick's efforts should be given credit in figuring out the latest pattern and development of Chinese foreign policy. The qualitative works such as case studies and interviews with diplomats, business people and Chinese diaspora are also valuable to the study of Chinese foreign policy. However, as a student of international relations, I would expect a finer definition of the Chinese soft power rather than putting the Chinese political influence and economic capability under the category of soft power. Besides, since China has engaged with many regional institutions by advocating multilateralism, the power and influence of China can be explained in terms of structural realism or institutionalism, but not necessarily soft power. Moreover, Kurlantzick concludes that there are mutual interests between China and the United States, thus he holds an optimistic view that "if America seems popular and strong, allowing China to assume more responsibility for the globe will become easier for America to accept". It seems that the conclusion simplifies the interactions and mechanisms between China and the United States in shaping the world order. The political significances and implications of the Chinese charm offensive towards the existing international norms and values as well as world order should be further examined. What is the role of Chinese norm of non-intervention and multilateralism in upsetting the status-quo or making the new world order? Does the Chinese soft power cause any political cost to the United States?
Nevertheless, Kurlantzick points out the determining pivot between the Chinese and American soft power, "More important, the United States still offers a political and social model, a set of values, which can appeal to average people around the world. China's values - noninterference, respect for other nations' internal affairs, economic gradualism directed by the state - can enjoy appeal. But China's values appeal only to specific groups: elites in authoritarian nations..." Since the Deng's era, the Chinese foreign policies are regarded as pragmatic in the quest of national interests, may be it is the time for the Chinese government to review its previous diplomacy by concerning more about international public interests.』 『
At the beginning of the twenty-first century, China is poised to become a major global power. And though much has been written of Chinaâs rise, a crucial aspect of this transformation has gone largely unnoticed: the way that China is using soft power to appeal to its neighbors and to distant countries alike. This book is the first to examine the significance of Chinaâs recent reliance on soft powerâdiplomacy, trade incentives, cultural and educational exchange opportunities, and other techniquesâto project a benign national image, position itself as a model of social and economic success, and develop stronger international alliances. Drawing on years of experience tracking Chinaâs policies in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Africa, Joshua Kurlantzick reveals how China has wooed the world with a "charm offensive" that has largely escaped the attention of American policy makers. Beijingâs new diplomacy has altered the political landscape in Southeast Asia and far beyond, changing the dynamics of Chinaâs relationships with other countries. China also has worked to take advantage of American policy mistakes, Kurlantzick contends. In a provocative conclusion, he considers afuture in which China may be the first nation since the Soviet Union to rival the United States in international influence.
