(Princess Tam Tam)
(The Apple of My Eye...)
(The Black Venus comes to dvd)
(King Kino) I used to think that no movies in the world beat 1930s-style Hollywood films--especially the ones featuring big musical and dance scenes--for sheer camp. But after watching "Princess Tam Tam," I realized that the French of the 1930s were pretty good at making movies so bad that, eighty-odd years later, their very badness makes them totally fun to watch.
"Tam Tam" is formulaic, as one would expect: debonair and worldly novelist is jealous of his wife, so he fakes a romance with a wild girl of north Africa--played by Josephine Baker--to make his wife jealous in turn. Baker plays a street urchin whom the novelist pretends is a "jungle" princess and introduces to Parisian high society as such. Predictably, the charade is exposed, but--also predictably--everyone lives happily ever after anyway.
There are some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments in the film. The guy who plays the novelist's sidekick, a sort of Oliver Hardy character, is really a good comedic actor. But for the most part the dialogue is strained and the editing is particularly bad. Jumps between splices occur nonstop.
The film was made, one suspects, to give Josephine Baker a stage. She'd made two earlier French films, the silent "Siren of the Tropic" and "Zou Zou," a much better talkie in which she sings the song made famous by the later film "Frida." But "Tam Tam" doesn't give Baker much of an opportunity to show her stuff. She sings a couple of numbers, which is good. But her two dance scenes are continuously interrupted by the camera panning the crowd of onlookers. And Baker looks old and a bit tired in the film. She tries real hard to be the vivacious and spirited gal that France fell in love with, but can't quite pull it off in this film.
So the film is pretty much an utter cinematic disaster. But it's great fun to watch. Delightful musical comedy gives us a rare glimpse of Baker's powerful allure and talent, and projects a knowing, sophisticated light-heartedness reminiscent of director Ernst Lubitsch. On-location Tunisian scenery lends distinctive atmosphere, and the viewer is transfixed any time Baker sings or dances. Somewhat daring and different for the times, "Tam-Tam" provides an invaluable record of one of the last century's most celebrated entertainers. When I was about ten years old in 1991 I fell in love with two black legends...Mahalia Jackson and Josephine Baker.
It is indeed a great joy to be able to see Josephine in action...to witness the star quality that enchanted people the world over and mesmerised fans for half a century.
I love Princess Tam Tam overall...The dance scenes are magnificent; the flexibility and lithe grace that Josephine possessed never ceases to amaze me. One critic said that she just had a few gimicks and shouldn't be considered a dancer but Josephine accomplished with her body what many are rushing to Juilliard to achieve today. She was able to combine ballet, acrobatics, jazz dancing and vaudeville comedic steps into one stunning whole. Some people were not moved by her singing either but her range was breath taking to me. Her voice was pristine and girlish...a soprano of exquisite beauty...
Josephine you were the true definition of DIVA!!!
The highlights of the film for me were her rendition of 'Dreams'...a lovely song that she sings; the camera gets a excellent closeup of her against the backdrop of a boat sail - showcasing her exotic good looks. And the dance scene at the end were she reveals her 'savage ways' to the French Gentry on stage at the Maharajah's party where she dances to 'Ahe, la Conga'. That scene particular keeps me on the edge of my seat. Josephine Baker, born and raised in St. Louis, left the United States as a teenager to escape racial discrimination. She moved to France and in the mid-20s became the toast of Paris dancing and singing in the Folies Berge. Billed as the "Black Venus," Baker wowed audiences with her provacative moves, especially her infamous "banana dance." And she made a few movies as well.
"Princess Tam Tam," filmed in Tunisia, is one of her better efforts. It is a Pygmalion-type story about a writer who takes an African vacation to escape his arrogant society wife. He and his collaborator seek inspiration to write a novel and they find it in an exotic native girl played by Baker. The writer decides to transform the girl into a princess and bring her back to France to make his wife jealous. The film is enhanced by Baker, whose personality shines through - it is easy to see why audiences were so enchanted with her. She gets to do two dance numbers - one inside a cafe and the other during an elaborate Busby Berkeley style number at the end of the film.
The extras on the disc inside a 20 minutes documentary which discusses three significant Baker films - "Siren of the Tropics," "Zou Zou," and "Princess Tam Tam." It includes interviews with Baker's adopted son, Jean-Claude as well as actress Lynn Whitfield (who portrayed Baker in the film "The Josephine Baker Story"), NY Times theater critic Margo Jefferson and dance critic Elizabeth Kendall. A long time ago, in the early days of the 20th Century, the Madonna of French society was a vivacious, exotic black singer/dancer named Josephine Baker. Blessed with enormous eyes and an infectious smile, she starred in her 3rd movie, "Princess Tam Tam", in 1935. A French version of Pygmalion, "Princess Tam Tam" stars Baker as a wild African shepard, reformed(somewhat), and brought to Paris for exhibition. The story lacks momentum, but, in the end, Baker breathes life into the film. "Princess Tam Tam" is part of the Kino Josephine Baker DVD-trilogy. Kino's transfer includes a documentary, songs, and other generous extras. Once again, Kino is King. This 1935 variation onPygmalionis a clever French vehicle for Josephine Baker, the Missouri woman who found stardom in Paris as a dancer and singer. The black performer plays an African shepherd, Alwina, a wild and exotic creature who meets a celebrity novelist, Max (Albert Prejean), the latter in a desperate search for inspiration. He finds it in a bemused notion to polish away Alwina's earthy sexuality and turn her into a princess presentable to upper-crust Parisian society. Meanwhile, Max's estranged wife, Lucie (Germaine Aussey), has concocted an affair with a black prince, thus giving the City of Lights much to buzz about when both spouses turn up as separate halves of interracial couples. Career director Edmond T. Greville (The Hands of Orlac) brings a light touch toPrincess Tam Tam, only his fifth film of many, and the Continental wit on display is occasionally comparable to some of Ernst Lubitsch's best ideas. Baker trills and leaps about and dances during a few scenes, and does exceedingly well in the Eliza Doolittle-like part.--Tom Keogh Rerations < Princess Tam Tam >

Starz / Anchor Bay(2002-07-23)
customer 's review (This Anemic Psycho-Sexual Horror From Hammer Provokes Little Fear)
(A surprise from Hammer)
(great psycho thriller from Hammer) According to the liner notes provided by Anchor Bay for "Straight On Till Morning," Hammer House was in a financial slump in 1972. Hoping to correct the situation, Michael Carreras envisioned a double bill of psychological horror films made on a low budget. Both "Fear in the Night" and "Straight on Till Morning" involved women who are terrorized by killers. Released together under the heading of "Women In Terror," the movies fared poorly at the box office. Let's discuss "Straight on Till Morning."
This film has an excellent premise. Rita Tushingham stars as a homely, young woman who lives in a fantasy world. She writes children's stories about princesses being rescued by knights in shining armor. She travels to swinging London and meets Shane Briant. In her eyes, he is a prince. Unfortunately, we learn through a series of flashbacks that he seduces women and kills them for their money.
Shane Briant was excellent in "Demons of the Mind" because he looks anemic and sickly. He portrayed a young man who is kept locked in his bedroom. In "Straight on Till Morning," he still looks weak and pale faced and I can't imagine anyone but the loneliest being attracted to him. (A blind person could mistake the moles on his face for Braille.) One gorgeous young woman practically leaps into bed with him and is stabbed to death while still in his arms. How wimpy Briant was able to dispose of her body and quickly clean up the mess before Tushingham arrived home is unbelievable. A genuine Euro stud such as Jean Sorel, Fabio Testi, or George Hilton should've been cast in lieu of Briant.
Where was Briant hiding the bodies? Most all of the killing is implied or done off screen. There is virtually no gore. The lackluster ending had a lot of screaming that was more annoying than frightful.
"Straight on Till Morning" is too slow and anemic for modern audiences. Rita Tushingham's excellent performance is not enough to warrant watching this film. It is only recommended for Hammer Production completists. Please rent before paying a huge price for an out of print copy. It is so not worth it.
For fans of Hammer, this film comes highly recommended.Set in modern London (1972), those familiar with the period Hammer pieces might expect a somewhat confused plot or hard to follow story. Whlie such Hammer films are still enjoyed by many, pleasingly, this is not the case here. This one should easily hold your attention from start to finish, and is truly a departure for Hammer, being a rather modern story, in a modern setting. For purposes of comparison, Fear In The Night comes closest, but Straight on Till Morning has a far better story to tell, is much clearer, and is therefore more rewarding. A genuinely enjoyable, substantial, and frightening thriller- you'll spend the length of the film trying to figure out the extent of madness to which Shane Briant's character has fallen into- not to mention wondering when, and if Rita Tushingham's character is about to be murdered by him. I was expecting a fairly average Hammer film with this one, but got much more. Really interesting and unique piece for Hammer fans. I've been wanting to see this rarely shown Hammer movie for a long time so it was great to finally get the chance with this superb release from Anchor Bay.This is a disturbing and quite shocking psychological thriller with some genuinely unsettling scenes that must have packed quite a punch in the early seventies.Rita Tushingham is brilliant as the northern girl who moves to London in search of a boyfriend to father the baby she desperately wants.Shane Briant is suitably creepy as the guy she eventually meets. The print used here is astonishingly clean and sharp.Absolutely pristine in fact.Well done Anchor Bay.Again. The gothic horror of Hammer Films gets a mod update in this interesting curio, directed by the erratic Peter Collinson (The Italian Job). Rita Tushingham is a Liverpool girl, slightly soft in the head, who travels to London determined to get pregnant. Unfortunately (or perhaps not), she meets a blond psycho (Shane Briant), who installs her in his mod '60s pad--he calls himself "Peter" and her "Wendy," sustaining the Peter Pan theme of the title. The ideas here seem borrowed from those key British thrillersPeeping TomandThe Collector, and the editing style is clearly influenced by the disorientation ofPerformance. And yet there's something out of control about this picture, something authentically weird. In one scene Tushingham pretties herself up in what may be the ugliest make-over in screen history. Jazz singer Annie Ross, who also contributes a wispy song, appears in a small role.--Robert Horton Rerations < Straight on Till Morning >

customer 's review (Bad service)
(My daughter loved it)
(Not really a toy, but my daughter loves it) Was charged for this item and it wasn't delivered. Contacted company and the finally sent the item. Later after I rated their site, not too good of a rating, by the way, they sent me e-mail and said if I removed the bad rating they would send my a gift. Just for the heck of it, I removed the rating and guess what....it has been 4 months and I have not received any gift. So I suggest before ordering from this place you make sure you really want the item and good luck getting it. She is a huge sonic fan. This key chain made her happy. It is not entertaining or educational. It is hardly a toy. It does allow her to decorate her back pack with Sonic and crew. She does get joy out of it being there. It is decently made. My daughter loves Sonic games and this was the perfect stocking stuffer for her at Christmas. BRAND NEW Rerations < SONIC X SHADOW, ROUGE&SONIC METAL KEY CHAIN >

(Agree with all 5 star reviews!)
(Great book. One tiny problem.)
(Another great book)
(Empowering and Enhancing your life) This book is extremely informative! I have learned a great deal that I never saw in other books of this type. This is a great book to have in your pagan/witch library. I find myself coming back to it over and over again. It's an easy read, gives great information&doesn't preach. I agree with all the 5 star reviews! A visual bonus is the parchment colored paper and the ruff cut edges. Makes for a magical looking book! I am a 2nd generation witch but I have not embraced witchcraft or any theological thought form for nearly 20 years. In my quest for multi-versal knowledge and through my avid interest in and incessant reading about quantum physics and super quantum physics, I have, ironically, arrived back at the starting point. The basics which seem so right to me. (Sorry for the run-on sentence and all the ones to come...) This book is a fabulous tool for beginners and adepts alike. I love her non-denominational approach and she really breaks down the process of spell creation and use in a user-friendly format, but.....
I came across one line that I feel I must caution all potential readers about. "If invoking earth itself is too abstract for you, then envision small, dark humanoid creatures emerging from the ground to add their personal energy to your spell."
Uuuuhhh, I'm not exactly sure what the author thinks she's telling the reader to do but do yourself a favor and go with the gnome instead. (the author gives a gnome as the first choice for the spirit that represents the element of Earth) I am also an experienced paranormal investigator and shadow people(small, dark humanoid creatures that emerge from the ground among other places) are an all-too-common feature at super haunted sites. These are not creatures you want in your sacred circle or your home and they are very real. Though some statements must be taken with a very heavy grain of salt (just do what feels right to you) this book is a gem in the witches library.
It is the first real crafting book I have read. It was not a book that offered spells but open the door to the spells in me. It is must have for the crafter of spells. I found this book to be very informative. There is good information for anyone to use to empower and enhance their life. I highly recommend this book to anyone that's in need of empowering their life for the better. Your intrepid guide to the art of spellcraft,Power Spellcraft for Lifetakes you on an in-depth magical journey of personal fulfillment. You'll explore the hows and whys of spellcasting, learn step-by-step how to build your own successful spells, raise positive energy to power them, and make your dreams come true. With Wiccan expert Arin Murphy-Hiscock as your guide, you will learn how to:

(What they don't teach you in your MBA program)
(Not Excellent, but Ok)
(Lite-reading .... learning and chuckling at the same time)
(Nothing New) As the owner of Integrity Management Solutions Group [...] this book is a great introduction to Business Etiquette, as it highlights the basics. It is not an easy book to have if you want a quick reference guide. By the time you are in the situation and need quick advice it may be too late if this is the only book you have for "quick reference" etiquette, unless one has taken the time to do their own personal tabs. As a business executive I have interviewed scores of individuals seeking to advance their career and most of them do not know how. It is not they are lacking in education but what they do lack is the savvy on how to present themselves in business situations that highlights their best skills and attirbutes.
While Ann Marie Sabath's work is not a how to land your next job book, it is full of those important tips how to deal with some of the most sticky of work situations. The same situations that typically come up in a job interview questions when is asked how do you deal with XYZ situation and if answered wrong can prevent one from moving up the management ladder.
Further, Sabath's pointers can help one manuever through those uncomfortable situations where the boss may be looking and trying to size you up for an important project or future role in the company.
Written in a quick to read and at times witty fashion, I highly recommend this book for those starting out their business career or those who are leaving the military starting their civilian career in management. Not an excellent guide, but I was able to get a few pointers or refreshers that help me in the workplace. Out of 101, I probably highlighted or underlined 25. Since this author makes a living writing newspaper articles, but mainly, doing corporate presentations, or so she says, this explains the lite- reading aspect of the book's 191 pages, and the tendency of the author to teach various situations of etiquette while having the readers chuckling on and off, throughout the work. Not being an expert, some of the advise, a few times, is questionable, especially for people at home receiving calls from telemarketers, to demand to speak to those guys' supervisors. Really ? Get real! Especially with sales outfits making calls from across the planet in India, where can you find a supervisor over there, or if you find one, who knows what the do-not-call list is, or cares. Other situations are appropriate and interesting.
The brevity, and lite-ness of the book suggests the author mainly benefits workers from lowering those busy-bodies blood pressure through this etiquette lesson in major corporations, vs. training these to become experts. I didn't find this book terribly useful. Most of the concepts presented in the book were common sense and did not specifically apply to business. The book centered around typical social etiquette (which certainly applies in the business world), but did not provide much business-specific guidance. I found that most of the concepts were covered in general etiquette publications. I was also disappointed to find that the book did not provide specific solutions for breaches in business etiquette. I guess I was looking for some nice catch-phrases and replies for the business user. I do think the book was simple to read, and might be a good book for newcomers to American business etiquette. Business Etiquette: 101 Ways to Conduct Business with Charm and Savvy is a practical business survival guide that will help the reader thrive in today's competitive business world. Written in an easy-to-use, question and answer format, this book makes business etiquette accessible and fun! Topics include Greetings and Introductions, Meetings, International Etiquette, and Appropriate Business Attire. Learn from an expert in the field how to successfully handle all business situations. (GREAT READ)
(Written for locals)
(Wandering in B-More)
(A Smartt look at Baltimore) As a native Marylander (Frederick) and Johns Hopkins alumnus, I have many pleasant memories of lovely old Baltimore. This book is a light read, but Bell knows the heart of the city well. The reader really gets the feeling of the old neighborhoods and their traditions, mostly due to the author's keen eye and flowing narrative style. He reminds me a bit of Andrei Codrescu.
Bell's interest in architecture becomes obvious almost immediately, and this is entirely appropriate considering the marvelous ensemble of historic buildings in Baltimore. The author's selection of neighborhoods to explore is necessarily selective, for brevity and for safety. Charm City isn't the most hospitable place in the United States, but it reveals a proud history and a truly beautiful cityscape for one willing to dig around a bit. Bell has done just that.
Trust your noodly master, Hon. Mr. Bell has captured the atmosphere of Baltimore, especially it's unique combination of history and irreverence. When I was a kid (this goes back a few decades) one way people described Baltimore was as "the biggest small town in the world." This book captures the essence of that. Though Mr. Bell and his walking companions wander miles and miles they never seem far from the core of the place. This book is too much fun for any Baltimore reader to pass up. I enjoyed this book, though that's likely because I grew up a few blocks from Madison Bell, and his stories were like strolling through my childhood and adolescent days. I think the book is well-written, but ultimately, it is a narrative book about several walks around town (going south on York Road, north along Charles Street, east to Fells Point, and then west to an obscure tucked away neighborhood).
Once finished reading it, I gave it away to my brother, a rare occurrence because I usually hang onto my books. I'm not sure that the book would carry over well to someone not already familiar with Baltimore. The Crown Journey series asks established writers to wander through a city or area they live in or know well, and then write about it in a way that introduces the outsider to that place. I've read two others in the series, Christopher Buckley's one on Washington, D.C. (my hometown), and Chuck Palahniuk's one on Portland, OR (where I went to college). The former is pretty terrible, focusing on the standard federal and historical haunts while mostly ignoring the 500,000+ people who actually live here. The latter does a pretty good job of capturing Portland, with an emphasis on the quirky. After D.C., Portland, San Francisco, and New York, Baltimore is probably the next city I know reasonably well -- it's only a 45 minute drive north, and I've probably visited it somewhere between 50-75 times since the early '80s.
Bell is a 20+ year resident of the Baltimore area, and arranges the book as a series of walks through various parts of the city in the company of friends steeped in local lore. Many of these areas (Fells Point, Inner Harbor, Canton, etc.) are well known tourist destinations, others (Dickeyville, north Charles Street) much less so. His general mode is to embark on his promenade and alternate descriptions of present-day street life and architecture with odds and ends of local history. While some of this historical context is interesting, it does drag the book down at times, as does his preoccupation with architecture. The book is much stronger when he focuses on social history, rather than the "founding fathers" stuff that tends to dominate.
Similarly, Bell is at his best when he turns his novelist's eye to the various bars and characters he encounters along the way, bringing them vividly to life in a way he simply can't with the historical material. The dominant theme is one of constant change and transformation, running from the great fire of 1904 that leveled most of the old town and required massive rebuilding, to the scandalous land grabs of the '60s, to the rapid-fire redevelopment/gentrification currently underway throughout the city. On the whole, a quick and readable introduction to the city for the uninitiated. Madison Smartt Bell's walking tour of Baltimore take us through a variety of neighborhoods, some well know and some rather obscure. Of course we get the low down on the touristy and trendy parts of town like Federal Hill, Fells Point, the Inner Harbor, and Canton.
With this city nearly 300 years old, Bell is able to sprinkle in an interesting look at its history with the descriptions of these places and how they've changed with gentrification.
Because of his local literary celebrity, Bell has access to some well-know locals and some colorful characters. For example, he visits a quaint, charming, but little-know part of town, Dickyville, with Laura Lippman, former Baltimore Sun reporter and now well-known mystery writer. She grew up in Dickeyville and provides insiders flavor to its description and historical context.
Bell, a guitarist, gives us a vivid sense of the Fells Point bar scene and sits in with a local band where we meet some great local characters. With his skill as a writer, Bell neatly weaves the long history of this area in with the local scene and its changing population.
Bell and I are close in age and both moved to Baltimore about the same time, more than twenty years ago. Reading this book took me back though these years and the many places that make Baltimore quirky and fun, with a unique mix of small city sense of place and big city attractions. With a writer’s keen eye, a longtime resident’s familiarity, and his own sly wit, acclaimed novelist Madison Smartt Bell leads us on a walk through his adopted hometown of Baltimore, a city where crab cakes, Edgar Allan Poe, hair extensions, and John Waters movies somehow coexist. From its founding before the Revolutionary War to its place in popular culture—thanks to seminal films like Barry Levinson’s Diner, the television show Homicide, and bestselling books by George Pelecanos and Laura Lippman—Baltimore is America, and inCharm City, Bell brings its story to vivid life.
First revealing how Baltimore received some of its nicknames—including“Charm City”—Bell sets off from his neighborhood of Cedarcroft and finds his way across the city’s crossroads, joined periodically by a host of fellow Baltimoreans. Exploring Baltimore’s prominent role in history (it was here that Washington planned the battle of Yorktown and Francis Scott Key witnessed the“bombs bursting in air”), Bell takes us to such notable spots as the Inner Harbor and Federal Hill, as well as many of the undiscovered corners that give Baltimore its distinctive character. All the while,Charm Citysheds deserved light onto a sometimes overlooked, occasionally eccentric, but always charming place.
