The music is lyrical and expressive, serene yet energetic, and very involving. A wonderful recording, and one certainly deserving wider recognition.』
(Great individual tracks, monotonous album) 『All the tracks on Douglas' CD play greatly on their own. Taken as a whole album, however, a slight note of monotony might creep in after track 7 or 8 -- many of the tracks share a similar mood and pace, and one might find oneself wishing for a bit of variety after an extended listening. However, that doesn't change the excellence of the performances and composition.』

Douglas has rightly moved from obscurity to the first rank of jazz musicians in the 1990s, gaining widespread exposure from Zorn's Masada,&waxing a seeming flood of discs with a variety of bands--an acoustic, string-based quintet; the trumpet/guitar/drums ensemble the Tiny Bell Trio; the larger, more conventional jazz ensemble that recorded tributes to Booker Little, Mary Lou Williams&Wayne Shorter;&many other projects. _Charms of the Night Sky_ announced a new project, which is centred on the duo of Douglas&the remarkable accordionist Guy Klucevsek, who is one of the few North American players who can stand with Europeans like Richard Gilliano or the bandoneon master Dino Saluzzi. Half of this CD is duets of these two players; on other tracks they are joined by the ubiquitous, omnicompetent violinist Mark Feldman (whose c.v. includes everything from country fiddling to work with orchestras)&Greg Cohen (who splits his time between old-fashioned jazz with players like Marty Grosz&Woody Allen,&playing with Masada).
This is a strikingly lovely disc,&even skeptics about accordion are urged to give it a try. Douglas is as always very careful&specific about the inspirations for his music: this disc has a dedication to Charlie Haden,"Dance in Thy Soul"(which is, unexpectedly, a violin feature--after a free-tempo introduction, this settles into perhaps the most exciting&insistently rhythmic piece on the disc, which ends with a simultaneous trumpet/violin improvisation which dissolves into delicate high-pitched tones). There are two covers, Francesco Cilea's"Poveri Fiori"&Herbie Hancock's"Little One"--not simply a great cover (which it is) but an indication of a key source for the kind of subtle&impressionistic jazz on this disc.
This is an album at once innovative&immediately listenable. Highly recommended. (OK, I admit it. . . .) 『I originally chose this CD as my intro to Dave Douglas' solo work because the Winter&Winter packaging is so cool. . . . I overlooked the fact that he would be playing with just bass, violin, and accordion (yes, accordion) and went with CHARMS OF THE NIGHT SKY. Man, what a good call! This CD is all that it possibly could be, and Douglas makes it even more. Great arranging turns some very intriguing melodies into very intriguing and beautiful songs. As I have since discovered, this is pretty mellow stuff for Douglas, but he brings a passion and energy to this seemingly laid-back disc that few, if any, others could do. Tracks 2&3,"Bal Masque"and"Sea Change,"would probably be my two favorites (I love him jumping the octave in"Sea Change"), but I don't skip over anything. I have seen Douglas play in concert with John Zorn's Masada, and he is just physically and sonically impressive in that setting. What is really cool is that he is equally impressive in a bit more subdued setting such as this. Cohen, Feldman, and Klucevsek should not be overlooked, either, as their support is integral throughout the CD. A beautifully constructed collection, this is worthy to be on the shelf of really special discs that one goes to for a breath of fresh air, a moment just to clear one's head, and/or a deep breath at the end of a busy day. Douglas will reward you, and you'll come away quiet, refreshed, and invigorated. At least I do. . . .』

After reading all of the other books withe "Det. Chorie", "PI" was the hardest one of all to finde (only available in a 3 story series). The story was entertaining (not great) and the narrarator was as far from a tough, gruff, battle tested NYPD Det.as one could get! He made the audio book verry hard to finish, and took away from the story.
If you like DeMille, i would rerad all of the other "Det. Chorie" books, befor you listen to this audio book, the other narrarators really put you inside these great cases!

(Great series of books grouped together) 『My favorite author puts together a great trio of books. My all time favorite Charm School brings you back to the cold war days wondering how this hasn't been made into a movie. Plum Island is more current, but one of the more exciting and thrilling efforts of DeMille. Lastly Word of Honor is in the middle (chronologically) and is one of his "sleeper" titles that you will truly enjoy.

(Not Her Best Work, But...) 『I'm writing this review for two reasons. The first is to add my advice to skip this book. If you are new to Green Witchery there are other books far better and if you aren't new to it this book will be a waste of your time at best and piss you off at worst. My second reason is to make sure those not familiar with her other books don't miss out on her truly wonderful books because of this unfortunate misstep. I can't recommend Power Spellcraft and Solitary Wicca enough. Power Spellcraft is a wonderful book on pure Spellcraft(not High Magick) sans religion. Solitary Wicca is clear, concise and encourages the reader to think about why you are doing something instead of just learning how to do it. If you are in the market for a Wicca 201 book or a book on spellcraft seperate from religion, please read the reviews for the aforementioned books for more info. The glowing reviews are well earned.』

(Green witch review) 『I didn't think this book was as horrible as the previous reviewer thought it was. But I do agree, there are much better books on the market that cover the topic of green witchcraft.
The book does contain some incorrect information. The author seems a bit confused regarding what a real essential oil is and she recommends using vanilla flowers to make an infused sugar - I think she means vanilla beans. And she says that regular marigolds are not edible, not entirely true, the flowers of gem series marigolds, Latin name Tagetes tenuifolia, which are sold under the name lemon gem are edible. And I've been growing Mexican mint marigold AKA winter taragon, Latin name Tagetes lucida, in my gardens for years, again this is another marigold with edible flowers.
If you receive this book as a gift I wouldn't throw it away. But I wouldn't recommend going out and buying a copy. (informative) 『Although I have some doubts about there being real Gypsies in the English countryside still living in wagons etc. , i have to to say that to best best of my (admittedly poor) knowledge Cooper provides some important information. The book lays out some of the basic stuff you might encounter when meeting your average Gypsy fortuneteller (palmistry, cards, spells) and has some eclectic information (such as runes etc) that clearly are Cooper's own special interest.
There is also some unsentimental advice on casting curses and protecting from them, clearly a major part of Romany existence. Cooper knows about energy and the stuff she talks about is clearly first-hand, which i appreciated.
Any claims that this work is too simple is, imo, misguided and a bit naive. The book is a treasure trove of information that many - including those working the ceremonial magic - will find interesting, if not useful. I recommend it.』
