Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Surrealist Near Masterpiece) 『In this savage satire of the upper class, six wealthy friends attempt to enjoy an evening meal together. They are inevitably foiled by an unlikely series of events, each blurring the line between fantasy and reality.
The friends are often heartless in their complacency.When the ambassador of the fictional Miranda tells his friends of a Nazi war criminal hiding in his country, the others seem mildly interested. Apparently, he was a real butcher. A woman interjects: "Does he like dogs?"
There are several laugh out loud moments, and Bunuel mixes in a healthy dose of social commentary. An entertaining ensemble of supporting characters often make surprise revelations, drastically changing your impression of a scene. In one, a woman leads a Father to the bedside of a dying old man. Before going in, she stops him and makes a confession: "I've always hated Jesus Christ."
As the film approaches its finale, Bunuel explores the medium between dreams and real life. Several of the friends experience nightmares playing on their fears and desires. The six actors give depth to their characters, and the viewer gets an admirable portrait of each. Bunuel's genius is evident throughout. 4.5/5』

(The Stuff of Dreams) 『"The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" unfolds with the absurd logic of a recurrent dream, and since the DVD has been beautifully restored, one is able to dream the dream in vivid color: Elegantly dressed guests arrive for a dinner party only to have the hostess inform them that they have arrived on the wrong night; thus, they keep making appointments for dinners that are continually interrupted for one reason or another--all of the reasons being as patently ridiculous as are the characters: a bishop, who arrives at the house and asks to be hired as a gardener, and then relates the story of his macabre childhood; a soldier, who arrives at a restaurant (that has run out of tea and coffee), asks to join the ladies, whom he has never met before, and relates the story of his macabre childhood; a General, who arrives with his platoon a day early at the same house with the same hostess in time for dinner, and then, after the General invites a Private to relate the story of his macabre dream to the hosts and the invited guests (who listen attentively), both General and platoon depart for maneuvers (but not before inviting all the guests to his house for dinner, where even more macabre events unfold.). This film is for anyone who has ever had recurrent nightmares of waiting for a bus on the wrong corner; of being about to take a test only to discover that one has studied the wrong subject; of being about give a lecture only to discover that one has forgotten the notes; or of performing on stage with a mouth stuffed with peanut-butter when one's cue is coming up. All the absurd commonplaces that make perfect sense when one is dreaming. And much of the "discreet charm" of the bourgeois characters in this film derives from the fact that one is dreaming their nightmares and not one's own.』

It is charming, and wonderful, and even better than reading it, is listening to Kaye Gibbons read it on audio tape. I have worn my tape out listening to it so many times. Kaye's voice makes the characters come alive, and her North Carolinian accent is simply beautiful. If you haven't read the book, get it today! You will fall in love with these 3 women, and Kaye Gibbons style of story-telling!』

The relationship between the three generation of women was portrayed with great honesty and affection. And although some of the men were portrayed as nitwits, in the end, it showcased two beautiful love stories.
The actress who portrayed "Margaret" has a gorgeous smile. She did an excellent job as did the rest of the cast.』

The great Gena Rowlands stars as a homeopathic healer whose strength and spirit runs her town and family ragged. She compassionately treats a town of people with herbs and treatments made from love while watching over her daughter and granddaughter like a hawk. The daughter is played by Mimi Rogers, her character is a flirty frilly woman always in search of love and not very interested in medicine. The granddaughter is played very well by Susan May Pratt and she is the family member who ends up following in her grandmother's footsteps. The relationship between the grandmother and granddaughter is truly touching and inspirational. The strength of all of the women is to be admired especially because the film takes place during the 40's and WWII when women were still expected to be mothers, housekeepers and cooks rather than professional independent women on their own.
Rowlands steals this film away and will leave you wishing for a grandmother just like her. The beauty of this movie lies in the compassion and relationships in a family of women. I believe it will charm you into a new way of living. 』

The do soak up some liquid, but not nearly as much as advertised. It makes little to no difference whether you start them wet or dry. When you try to wash them, they crumble and shrink. You don't even want to touch them anymore. I was so diappointed with these. I recommend buying Zwipes Microfiber 36-Pack of Cleaning Cloths instead. They may not soak up a fish tank full of water, but at least you can use them over and over again instead of once or twice. Then you can really cut back on your paper towels.』

Set in the "Big Woods" of Wisconsin in the 1870s, the story is told from the point of view of five-year-old Laura, the middle sister of three, who lives with her parents in a log cabin where her father earns his living as a trapper.
Wilder describes life in the 1870s in painstaking detail that keeps the story interesting without ever bogging down the pacing. The story takes the reader through a year in the life of the family, from the harvest and storing of food for the winter, through the Christmas celebrations, and the playful days of summer.
All of the family's work and play is described, with the occasional tall tale from Pa Ingalls, often told with a lesson in mind for the girls. The cycle of the year forms the structure and plot of the story, although the central conflict involves Laura's struggle with her jealous feelings toward her older sister.
There is humor and tenderness spread throughout the story, as well as a constant subtle tension as the reader is reminded of how fragile life on the frontier can be. The family has only themselves to rely on. Neighbors and relatives are distant, and the nearest town is far enough away that they only make one trip to town in a year. The story does not dance around the realities of hunting and raising animals for food. In fact, the first chapter is devoted mostly to the butchering of the family's hog.
