(Good Roots Reggae from the UK)

When I first heard of Lloyd Brown, I heard a few of his cuts from the"Deep"album on the Get UP/Stand Up Show (100.3 The Beat in Los Angeles). I was impressed with the vocals and musicianship. It took me a while to find a CD locally, but I finally found and purchased"Against the Grain,"an excellent showcase of good roots reggae, uplifting messages, and great music. One of my favorites is"Main Squeeze,"which makes use of Burning Spear's"Christopher Columbus"rhythm."Food For Thought"is another good one, and borrows from an Aswad track ("Warrior Charge")."Close To Thee"has a killer bassline chord progression and good roots lyrics."Sitting in Limbo"is a Jimmy Cliff cover (nicely done). I listened to"Bless Me"for a long time before I realized where I may have heard the rhythm. It vaguely reminds me of Bunny Wailer's"Dream Land,"which is on Bunny's Blackheart Man CD. Once again, the song is nicely done. Romeo is a dedication to Lloyd Brown's grandson - great bassline, good lyrics."Close to Thee,""Jerusalem,"and"Bless Me"are all excellent, but I think my absolute favorite on the entire CD is"Can't Done."The only song I don't care for is"Nothing But Love"(a bit too pop for me). Overall, the CD is great, and Lloyd Brown achieves a balance of lyrics (not too many, not too few) that reminds me of Bob Marley's style.

(Good indie rock. Slightly askew, and quirky.)

I first stumbled upon this album when a friend sent a tape of it to me along with Pee's rare "Salt Garden" single (where can I find this!?!?). I was immediately impressed. Pee has smooshed together a number of songs and interludes for this CD. Most are high-energy, a bit quirky, and unique sounding. Comparisons to the Pixies are inevitable, but Pee really can't be compared with anybody. They have the tempo switches of a math rock band, the simplicity of an indie band, and the guitar licks of...of...of Pee. The result is a unique sound that is often accessible without coming anywhere close to selling out. Standout tracks are "I Hop", "Treed", "San Salvador", and "Bruce Loves Big Star", among others. Following the final song "Kelso", there are a number of 10 second silent tracks, and sandwiched between are a short instrumental at track 66, then a nearly 8 minute instrumental at track 90, and some white noise to close out the CD on track 99.

Sadly, the last I heard was that Pee broke up a few years ago. Their follow up to this CD is called "The Roaring Mechanism" and can also be found here on amazon.com, but is listed under P.E.E. It's not as good as this one, but has a few standout tracks that make it a must for Pee fans.
This band reminds me somewhat of the Pixies, writing atypical and aggressive, yet melodic songs. Short too with male and female vocals (i love the girl's singing especially). All the songs (a lot!) are good, but some are occasionally wonderful.

they are very cute but are very hard to put on they stick were you putbthem so you need to make sure they are on right the first time
This isn't a game so I don't know how fun it is, but it IS really cute. So that gets it 5 fun stars. The skin is really awesome and my chica was excited to get it for her b-day. I have mixed feelings about this book. As a coffee table book it is lovely and well done, but as a reference book it is lacking. I found it frustrating to find beautiful photographic portraits of people who happened to be wearing a charm bracelet in the picture, but no close-up of the bracelet itself:
- a cherished bracelet left behind by a 911 victim is briefly described, but we don't get to see it except as part of a portrait.
- a collector of 19 (!) silver charm bracelets is shown wearing them all at once in an indecipherable mass, and we are told she and her husband collect the charms during travels. I would have loved to see the bracelets closely, as a window on the owner's personality, and record of travels.

The book does have other good views of bracelets and lots of historical information. I am happy to have it, except for a few frustrations.
