(Too Drawn Out) 『Although I really enjoy Ms. Mair's work, it does tend to be drawn out a little too long by her characaters being a little wavery minded. 1/2 through the story, she pretty much gives it away, then you have to put up with, does she want to be married or not, does she want to be with her best friend Rocky or not! I hope she puts these characters to rest and start anew. Also, I know it's Christian Fiction but can we get a little more action in the bedroom? How in the world did she ever get pregnant?』
(Long Wait Well Worth It) 『 As a huge fan of the other books in the Amanda Bell Brown mystery series, I have been looking forward to the long awaited released of the third book in the series. My eagerness was not in vain as this was another outstanding book from Burney . I don't think she's written one that I haven't liked yet. What I've always liked about the author's books is her boldness to take Christian fiction in places it's scared to go. Subjects like questioning religious practices, interracial dating and sex are brought up in this book with no sense of shame or timidity. Edgy is the word to describe most of this book and if you're looking for tame, meek Christian fiction, you won't find it here.
The mystery storyline in this book mainly deals with the death of the young son of a famous TV preacher and the suspicious nature surrounding the events. I will admit, if there's any fault with the book, it's that you have a feeling you already know what happened, you're just not 100% sure about it. However even more interesting than that, is the evangelist's teachings and his so called practices that don't mirror what he preaches. The methods used by his followers are scary to say the least. I don't blame Bell and Jazz one bit for being freaked out. I'm also not quite sure why in the world Rocky, Bell's ex and still a good friend, is friends with this guy and why he wanted to bring her there. Another plot line is the turbulent relationship between Bell and Jazz as they try to patch things up but keep bumbling along the way. I really liked it because it's very real and honest, with pain and hurt feelings that come along due to actions the two have made in the past.
Once again I really enjoyed this book and it's ability to push things to the edge. It's very refreshing to read about events that really happen in real life and to face and confront them without hiding them away. Plus, this book is also a really fun read. I have always loved the chemistry between Bell and Jazz and it's very evident in this book. I really hope we'll see more adventures from them in the future. If' you're looking for a really good multi-cultural series to read and like a bit of mystery in your books, this is the perfect series for you.』
(Not for me.) 『The back of this book bills it as a zany, thrilling mystery wherein our heroine, the quirky Dr. Amanda Bell Brown must find the cause for the death of a disgraced playboy evangelist's baby. I received a copy by request through the LibraryThing Early Readers Program (where it was not disclosed that it was Christian fiction) and I requested it because fiction with minority leads is something I'm actively trying to include more of here at BookLove.
Unfortunately, I simply could not get into this book.
The story opens with a long, lamenting conversation between Bell and her BFF/kinda of love interest (except she's married) which covers a lot of what happened in the first two books in the series and what happened between books. As a first time reader I was left with absolutely no clue what was going on, other than Bell, in an effort to make up with Rocky (the BFF who apparently put her marriage in danger before abandoning her, and who repeatedly teases her and calls her "babe" constantly) agrees to go visit a disgraced evangelist trying to make a comeback.
The second chapter opens with Bell and Rocky arriving at the location where the evangelist is filming his sermon. Bell is promptly assaulted by an old religious woman who calls Bell a hussy for being there with her pastor, and forcibly exorcises her, claiming a demon of interracial adultery is dwelling inside of her. Rocky, the charming BFF that he is, sits in his VIP seat and is amused by the antics, doing nothing at all to help.
After the sermon Rocky gets Bell backstage to meet the evangelist, Ezekiel Thunder. It's there that Bell meets Little Zeke Thunder, Big Thunder's 2 year old son. Bell is smitten, but launches into heartache over her own inability to have children, save for the fact that she's been nauseated a lot lately. But she can't have kids, she reassures herself, because she had a period since her husband left her and she has endometriosis, not to mention she has a tumor. With the subtly of a brick to the face, this "I can't be pregnant despite obvious weight gain, morning sickness and soreness" becomes a repetitive source of angst. When Bell finally moves past the topic secondary characters constantly bring it up, accusing her of being pregnant, kicking off the whole response again.
In chapters three and four Bell insists she isn't pregnant, then is threatened by the same person who assaulted her in the previous chapter, blatantly and maliciously manipulated by Thunder, again while her BFF Rocky just stands to the side, or defends Thunder.
It is never really explained why Rocky wants her to meet this clearly malicious, manipulative preacher. There's eventually something about Rocky wanting her to find God again, but that should never excuse the sort of behavior Bell has been subjected to.
In chapter five Bell finally does something that made me like her, she self soothes with a peppy new haircut. But when she returns to work she discovers her parking lot filled with the vehicles of all her closest, except her husband. Despite being forewarned Bell walks into the intervention. What is traditionally a last ditch effort to get a person with substance abuse to realize the extent of their actions is bastardized in this chapter as Bell's nearest and dearest claim the intervention is because she's fat, because her husband (who left her) is heart broken without her and she should go back to him, and because she is clearly pregnant and too old to be so (Bell is 35). The conversation is excessively scattered and even deviates into one of Bell's friends claiming it's not always all about Bell, except one would assume that an intervention IS about the person being confronted.
I stopped when I read the following interaction: "If Jazz (Bell's husband) is the one who left me, and he's the one who is drinking excessively, why didn't you do the intervention with him?" "Because all of this is your fault," my mother said.
If I hadn't been at a doctor's appointment I would have flung the book across the room. I did try to skip ahead in the book to see if it picked up, only to land on a scene where a doctor tells Bell and her husband, Jazz that Bell has a grapefruit-sized tumor, several grape=sized tumors and is also pregnant with twins.
The artificial drama is staggering in this book and completely distracts from the mystery Deadly Charm is advertised as containing. There is no time or build up to allow for readers to grow attached to Bell and having every character treating her like utter crap doesn't make her sympathetic. Furthermore the pregnancy side plot is a huge problem. The medical problems (pregnant, with tumors) reads as more unbelievable, and unneeded drama, there's never a question in the reader's mind whether Bell is pregnant or not, and the utter insensitivity that everyone else in the book shows for Bell's reproductive problems is pretty insulting.
It's a bad combination of writing flaws, so Deadly Charm ends up in the DNF pile.』
(Another "Bravo!" for Burney's Bell) 『Deadly Charm, Book 3 in the Amanda "Bell" Brown series, is wacky, informative, and will have you laughing with "Bell" one moment and crying for her the next.
As in Book 1, Murder, Mayhem&a Fine Man, and Book 2, Death, Deceit&Some Smooth Jazz (Amanda Bell Brown Mysteries, No. 2), Deadly Charm finds Bell, a faith-filled forensic psychologist/amateur sleuth, fast becoming a not-so-amateur "girl-Columbo" digging her way to the bottom of a suspicious toddler death case.
At the same time, Bell, is clumsily stepping into her new role as Mrs. Lieutenant Jazz Brown. As newlyweds, Bell and Jazz are also newly separated and potentially parents-to-be. This all makes for wacky love-hate interactions between the two. One minute they just need to grow up and get along. The next, they seem to "get" the marital oneness concept, and are there for each other as mates and as partners in solving the death case.
Each of the three books in the series could easily stand alone, though they'd be most enjoyable to new readers, read rapidly one behind another. As another customer said, waiting this long for Book 3 to come out was worth the wait.
Somehow in Deadly Charm, author Claudia Mair Burney teaches without preaching. There's just the right amount of info about police protocol, mental health, religion, and women's health, to name a few of the issues Bell and Jazz encountered. After finishing the book, I wanted to know even more about those issues in case they ever show up in my own writing.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (I don't understand all the rampage against this album) 『I feel this album to be one of Numan's best; sure, it's not Replicas or Pleasure Principle, but fans of an ever-evolving artist have to keep up with him in taste and style, which this album clearly has great value in. 1983's Warriors was a mislead and equally misleading album that paired Numan's signature style with dancier beats and instrumentation; for me, it misses the mark. Berserker was a great album, though found Numan in the same strange place that Warriors was trying to get out of. The Fury is Numan's perfecting the fusion of dancey pop and new wave, taking his style into a more industrial, slightly funky direction; the only problem with that album is the lack of originality between the tracks.
This album shows Numan taking that perfected new sound he'd been working on for years and indulges in musical ideas. Using his new found admiration for female backing vocals and saxophone he managed to create an eclectic and very well-written album.
As another reviewer stated, 'My Breathing' is an extremely powerful track, using decidedly non-Numan instrumentation: orchestral strings. It's catchy and serious altogether, and a great impression on the album's overall effect.
'Unknown&Hostile' is a very funky dance track that I'm sure most 'die-hard' Numan fans probably ignore whole-heartedly. But really the combination of sax, keyboards, and sparse guitar give this an outlandish feel that I think he had attempted to create on Warriors; well, if that really is the case, here we finally get to hear that vision!
'Sleeproom', while not a ballad, is a down-tempo stroke of isolation; the vocals are powerful, and Numan speaks very vividly of his career, say 'I don't sound like I should; I don't even belong to fashion' shows that he is aware of people's dislike of his new style, but that this is what he is. It's really more of a rather polite 'f*** off' to anybody who wants more Tubeway Army.
'New Thing From London Town', the album version, is an incredible industrial tune with some of the most forward-looking synths I've ever heard. While the music isn't exactly product of Numan's, the new vocals are a bit better over the original single's I think.
'I can't Stop' really stands away from the rest of the album; it has somewhat of an arena rock feel with the guitars, but most aspects of the song are signature late 80's Numan sound. I think Numan may have been trying a little too hard with this song, but it's still a great listen, and the extra version of the track available on most remastered CD's of the album is not to be missed.
The title track is an awesome piece on its own, as well as tying in the rest of the song. All the different ideas and styles that make this album so unique can be found in this track.
'The Need', perhaps the strangest song on SC, is the longest track, and very repetitive. I personally really like this track for its straight-forward beat and sparse instrumentation that gets thrown in the mix here and there which in some moments is in a way hypnotic and dancey in different moments.
As the only true ballad on the album, 'This is Love' takes the energy of the last few tracks and brings them back to a very isolated cache of emotions. I personally think ballads are cliche, but this one, with the other two slower, more serious songs, really shows what the purpose of the ballad is all about. This song is spacey, surreal, but uses piano chords, sax, and female vocals, among other things, to keep it human enough.
The b-side 'Time To Die', I never cared much for, mainly because Numan didn't even write it, but it definitely sounds as if it had been, since it uses references from 'Blade Runner' (a film that Numan had taken inspiration and used samples from until the early 90's).
The two instrumentals, 'Faces' and 'Survival' are fascinating industrial pieces, a style that he doesn't get back into until 'Outland' and 'Machine&Soul'. They both use heavy percussion and deep synths mainly, while retaining their own strengths. They're honestly brilliant, and I think, providing that these had been included in the album, that it would have made a bigger impact, but at least now we get to hear them on CD.
Overall, this album is extremely under-rated; it may be a little much for casual/beginner fans of Numan, and it would definitely be a good call to get his earlier mid 80's material like Berserker and The Fury first, to prepare yourself for the feel of this one. Absolutely one of my top favorite albums by Numan.』
(Numan's lost years) 『I originally bought Strange Charm on cd back in the late 80s. I had heard the song My Breathing on a college radio station and was floored by the exotic sound of it - the chorus, the synthesized orchestra and the eerie violin solo. I agree with the other reviewers who say it's one of Numan's greatest songs. As it turned out My Breathing and This Is Love are the only two songs on the original album that I liked. This Is Love features one of the best saxophone solos that I've ever heard by anybody. The song also features some brilliant fretless bass playing. Another good thing about this newer release is that it includes the song Survival, which I always liked...(it was originally the b-side of the This Is Love single). The rest of the album contains mostly bland electro funk music that features those annoying female vocals that Numan was so fond of at that time.』
(One-track Wonder) 『In the US, Gary has been consigned to the one-hit-wonder file. Too bad, since he put out at least 7 solid albums, and a load of intriguing tracks scattered over the rest of his opera. When I first bought this one, the cover art put me off right away. Wayfarers and platinum blonde hair? Please. It seems Gary never quite extricated himself from the 21st century brothel-attendant look of "Dance." But I recall the very moment I flipped it onto the turntable at a friend's house and was STUNNED when I heard the first track. "My Breathing" is one of the finest tracks Numan ever produced. The string groove has a kind of Wagnerian drive to it. The wailing ladies weren't distracting attention from everything else. It was just plain fun to listen to, and the lyrics were above par for Gary in this period of his career. In short, I was certain Gary was going to make that comeback Numanoids of olden days long prophesied. Then I heard the second track.
There are two other tracks worth visiting and revisiting, "The Sleeproom" and "Time to Die" which is sort of a schlockie tribute to Ridley Scott's Bladerunner that very nearly works and certainly beats everything on the original album except the two other aforementioned tracks. I would give 5 stars to "My Breathing," 3 stars for the other two, and 1 or 2 stars for each of the others.』
(schizophrenic charm) 『Numan's dance trend reaches scattered heights in the disco-tronic 80's. Confusion and perhaps blatant redundancy cloud whatever direction Numan is trying to approach in the post-modern era. A river patrol to sax highlighted dance floors perhaps.
...however, the schizophrenic "Strange Charm" yields 3 classics in "My Breathing", "The Sleeproom" and "Time To Die". Strange in the fact that Time To Die was left off the first pressing of this CD. Even more strange is that it was only available on cassette. Did anyone still buy 45's in the mid 80's? Strange Charm indeed.

("I know that I don't sound like I should") 『I bet more than a few Numan fans back in 1986 felt a bad trick was played on them when they plopped Strange Charm on their turntables for the first time."My Breathing"is amazing! On my top 10 all-time Numan list. It quietly builds up and then kicks in with this powerful orchestra sound (well keyboard-generated orchestra sound) and quiet, actually very nice, female vox. Unbelievable song! Words cannot do justice. After The Fury, which disappointed many fans, this song must have sounded like a breath of fresh air (no pun intended). Numan is back on track! Then the saxophone blares and the female singers wail on the second track"Unknown and Hostile"and reality sets in. More Janet Jacksonesque music from the New Wave/synthesizer god."I Can't Stop"and"The Need"continues the annoying material found on The Fury ("Creatures,""This Disease"). The latter is my vote for all-time worst Numan track. Like on The Fury, though, there are some decent tracks on here, besides the excellent opener, that keeps Strange Charm from being a bust. The title track rocks! It reminds me of"The Pleasure Skin"off The Fury."The Sleeproom"and"This is Love"are two beautiful ballads. I know a lot of fans hate Numan's very commercial work with Bill Sharpe, but I think"New Thing from London Town"is rather catchy. Cleopatra's issue even gives you a 7:57 version of the infamous single with different lyrics. Of the extra tracks, the haunting ballad"Time to Die"is the best. It reminds me a little of"I Still Remember"off The Fury. According to the liner notes, it was inspired by the movie"Blade Runner"(a clip from which begins"Call Out the Dogs")."Faces"and"Survival"are two odd instrumentals. Strange Charm is one of my least played Numan CDs but"My Breathing"alone makes it worth the price.
