(70s NYC Alternative Music -- Obscure but Powerful)

Lance Loud...wow where do I begin...?....I first met Lance in New York City when we were both teenagers....so I can say I knew him when...Lance was a great man.. agood guy that was a very loving person....He was, as his name is,LOUD at times....but mainly I recall the real kind hearted boy / man in his soul...I can see him walking down the streets and avenues in New York City with that unashamed flambouyant gait of his which was at many times looked on as a weakness....but in fact Lance was a man in complete command....he got things done....he went for it ....many years...I should say decades...before the phrase "GO FOR IT"...was ever coined or mentioned.... THAT is what Lance Loud was all about.... AND DO NOT YOU EVER FORGET IT...!...A boy....later a man... and always just a guy with dreams like everyone of us .... But most of all I will remember him as a man who kept the peace....in a time of turbulance.... HAIL,HAIL LANCE LOUD...HOLLYWOOD JOE (NYC and LA)
It's really a shame how the very active NY power pop scene, which ran concurrently with late '70s punk, has been completely written out of history. Since I believe discerning listeners CAN eat more than one kind of ice cream at once, permit me to present... THE MUMPS!!

I'd forgotten how good these guys were. The late, beloved, sorely-missed Lance Loud was an absolutely delightful frontman - always stylish, always witty, always hyperkinetic, and not entirely above the odd Very Dramatic Pratfall - which, unfortunately, sometimes involved spilling booze and broken glass all over the most august record company exec or music writer in the room.

Kristian Hoffman wrote most of the songs - and they were just as elegant and meticulously crafted as the stuff he's doing now. There is much, much more to his lyrics than meets the eye: check out "Crocodile Tears", a refreshingly stomping ode to apathy - or "Dutch Boy", an utterly perfect demolition derby addressing what certain cynics might term "Cameron Crowe-ism" - the dumbed-down, cleaned-up white-bread California liberalism creeping all over both the political and musical scenes at the time. Genius at work!

I was a little worried that the production here might render a lot of the stuff unlistenable, but it doesn't. While it's definitely low-fi, you really *do* get a sense of what the Mumps were about.

Hearing the remastered versions (and seeing the DVD) will be exciting too, but this CD should tide you over until that version comes out, hopefully in April 2005.

Although most of the tracks were recorded during the late seventies, they prefigure the next two decades of popular music and cultural change. Brilliant songwriting. I was excited to get this book but I was let down after reading the book in less than 15 minutes. It's a short little booklet showcasing seals and talismans from different grimoires and traditions. Anna riva also includes her own-made talismans at the very end. The book lacks details but is a quick reference source for those who are already familiar with these seals. Serious students would be adviced to seek the source of these talismans for a more indepth study.
If the reader of this book knows how to work with magic, spells and the universe, this is an excellent book. These seals work immediately when used correctly. Draw the seals on parchment paper-and then use them however you are going to use them-everyone has different ways. I use magic (seals) to reveal the truth about everything-(including truths about myself) but lately I have been working on the truths to be revealed about the causes of all these school shootings. Once the law enforcement can pinpoint the facts, then they can take measures to stop it.
this book may only show a few of the seals,amulet's,charms symbols and talismans of 500 spiritual systems that do exist.

This is alright. It has various seals and talismans to use but thats all it gives. It lists the seal itself and its name but not many uses and in some cases there are no uses listed. Buy it used if possible to mimimize cost.
this book show a lot of seals and symbols of magic I found a good symbols very usefull like the goetia seals an the seals of anna riva(to colect money,protection etc.)this anna riva's seals realy works with a correct consacration, but about the voodoo veves are all wrong.

(From a queer, young girl to an attractive auburnette schoolteacher...)

Like the first Anne book, Anne of Green Gables, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. And though many think these books sentimental mush, I seemed to garner a lot from reading them.

They teach me to see God in new and exciting ways - to see God more in Nature and the world around me that He has created - to look for the best in all people I meet, especially those who are hard to like, ie Mrs. Rachael Lynd and Mr. Harrison. We have to learn to see past the exterior to see the person inside.

Although I love _Anne of the Island_ and _Anne of Windy Poplars_ even more, this is a great book. It's not quite as gooey as Green Gables, and the hijinks of Anne and her crowd, almost adults but not yet, are fun and interesting as windows to another age. I do wish, however, I could step in and take Gilbert for myself - like all heroines whose authors wish to write many more books, she takes so young to yield!

The Dover edition is, as always, a great price.
I really enjoyed the first Anne book, but the second was a bit dull. It was still nice, but Anne and Gilbert's relationship doesn't go anywhere!!! So if you want to read an Anne book where it does, I strongly recommend Anne of the Island. I just didn't find this novel as capturing as I had hoped. Maybe it was too much description. I always have a problem with too much of that. While reading I had to keep skipping ahead to see when the next time Gilbert would even be mentioned!!! So like I said, it was okay.
The Book I read was by L.M. Montgomery. It is called Anne of Avonlea. This book is a realistic fiction.
This book is the second in a series of 8. It is about an adopted girl named Anne Shirley. She won a scholarship to Redmond College but when she finds out her adopted mother Marilla may go blind she stays behind. Anne starts teaching at a local school. Marilla's Relative dies and she adopts her two twins.
I loved this book. It was funny and cute. It kept me reading. I read the third one right after I finished it. I think that this book is appropriate for aged 10 and up.

Even though L.M. Montgomery did not intend Anne of Green Gables to be a series, she still captivates with her eager readers in Anne of Avonlea.
There are still quite a few differences, Anne has grown from a "queer", fiery, young girl to a wiser, calmer, auburn-headed schoolteacher. Yes, a schoolteacher. Also, as we follow Anne in this Bildungsroman literature, the romance between her and Gilbert Blythe peeks through shyness and past misadventures in this novel.
Some people consider it a book not as interesting as the first, and perhaps this is because Anne is no longer a child and could not grow into a young woman with the same inexperienced attitude.
Altogether, my opinion of the book is that it was a good follow-up and I sympathize that it would be hard to make up such great a book as Anne of Green Gables.

We recently built a home with a large front porch and I found many ideas in this book for making it look and feel cozy, for our family and those who come here. It is true as the author states that first appearances make lasting impressions. I keep my copy of this book on a table on our front porch near our wicker chairs so guests can enjoy it too. I have also given it as gifts. I totally disagree with the reviewer who called this book a lot of fluff! It's loaded with ideas, charm and tradition.
I am a contemporary woman who was given this book as a gift. It sat on my table for months until one night I read it from cover to cover. I found it delightful. It is light and entertaining with touching family memories, craft ideas and recipes. I have since purchased it for several friends.
I found this book a lot of fluff, and am quite disappointed that I actually spent money on it. I was taken in by the beautiful cover and lovely illustrations. It could have and should have been much more.
