Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Buy lots!) 『I bought these for my children to use with their Klutz Capsters book that I ordered from Amazon. They had a blast decorating these bottle caps. You don't really need the book. Just buy these bottle caps and add your own decorations such as stickers, glitter, pictures, letters to make names, etc. Once you children start on these, they don't stop. Even older children are making these and hanging them on their lockers at school. You can flip through this book at a book store to get the ideas and then order lots and lots of these bottle caps. It is a cheap craft and children of all ages love making these.』 『

This Valkyrie, conducted by Reginald Goodall and performed by the English National Opera, is worth listening to.
It's true that Goodall has the slowest tempi ever for a Ring recording: a total of 16 hours and 50 minutes, two hours more than the average Ring recording! But it's not at all bad. Sometimes the slow pacing works, and sometimes it doesn't. "Wotan's Farewell" isn't taken at a slow pace at all, and I do miss the slower approach that James Levine took. "Ride of the Valkyries" is just right, but I do miss Karl Bohm's energetic storm. And let's not forget about the orchestra. I love the bass clarinet that plays after Wotan's cry of dismay in Act Two, Scene Two. The strings and brass in "Magic Fire Music" are astonishing, it's great! The low brass in "Annunciation of Death" makes the scene so much more tragic than in Georg Solti's "Annunciation". So the orchestra gets another point.
The cast can only be described as "amazing." Norman Bailey, Alberto Remedios, and Margaret Curphy would be the ultimate Wotan, Siegmund, and Sieglinde for the English language. Rita Hunter is at her strongest here in "Valyrie" and she sings with her heart and soul perfectly. What I wouldn't give if I had a chance to see her live back in the 70's. Clifford Grant is a very good Hunding (just not the most impressive), while Anne Howard is a very believable Fricka. The Valkyrie cast are no match with Furtwangler and Bohm's cast, but they still can make the whole third act worthwhile.
And so as the "Magic Fire Music" plays on, we get a little sense of what's going to happen in "Siegfried."
The Box Set: Wagner: The Ring Cycle (Box Set) The Rhinegold (Part 1): Wagner: The Rhinegold Siegfried (Part 3): Siegfried (Goodall Ring Cycle/Chandos Opera in English) Twilight of the Gods (Part 4): The Twilight of the Gods (Goodall Ring Cycle/Chandos Opera in English)』
(Breathtaking, powerful, accessible, not just an alternative) 『This is one of three Walkure's in my collection: the very underrated Leinsdorf, the thrilling Boehm and this one with Goodall. I believe Goodall is right up there with the best of them. Remedios, Hunter and Bailey sing beautifully and with sufficient drama. I'll go out on a musical limb and say I believe Bailey is one of the finest Wotan's on disc. Many will disagree but I think he has the measure of the role, the power to pull it off and a burnished timber that never becomes coarse under powerful climaxes... Remedios may well be the star of the trilogy along with Hunter and Bailey. His Siegmund is beautifully sung and his Siegfried by the way, is no mean stint either. Would that we had tenors that could sing Siegfried without sounding stretched beyond their limits. I am continually puzzled by the bad reviews that the orchestra playing receives from ARG, Classics Today and a few others. The ENO is not a Concertgebouw or Vienna Philharmonic but I think they play beautifully, a few clinkers notwithstanding. For a live show, they do a pretty d..... good job. THe sound from both orchestra and singers is exceptionally fine. This set belong in your collection if you like Wagner and, Die Walkure, in particular. If I had been at the performance in the 1970's I would have come home very happy, satisfied and richer for the experience.』
(Absolutely Breathtaking!) 『I had long cringed at the thought of this magnificant masterpiece recorded in English. Even after reading several rave reviews on this cylce that I've read by authoritive Wagnerites and critics, I was still skeptical. Finally, I decided to add Goodall's 'Ring' as my third complete cycle (after Solti&Bohm) for one reason: because it was in English and I felt it would enhance my understand of 'The Ring.' In fact, after achieving that "higher understanding" I was planning on selling this set on Ebay. That was, of course, before I heard this magnificant recording.
During the course of my research on 'The Goodall Ring' most of the praised seemed to heighten around 'Siegfried,' which is my absolute favorite of the cycle. That also helped to seal the deal. As the critics said, 'Siegfried' under Goodall is excellent, but not as monumental as Solti's reading, which IMHO is the greatest recording of 'Siegfried.'
The set that stands out, to me, in 'The Goodall Ring' is this recording; The Valkyrie. It is absolutely breathtaking. Not only is it my favorite of this set, it is my favorite Valkyrie recording period (I am very familiar with Boehm's, Solti's, Karajan's, Furthwanglers, Levines, and others). Alberto Remedios (Siegmund here and Siegfried in the last two operas) is truly magnificant. It is the best Siegmund I have heard on disc (and his Siegfried rivals Windgassen). Coupled with Margaret Curphey (Sieglinde), you get the most beautiful and moving duo I have heard on record. The duet in Act I is simply glorious. You also get the bonus of Norman Bailey's triumphant Wotan (and Wanderer too). He has such command and prescene. He sounds like a God. Throw in Rita Hunter, who holds her own as Brunnhilde, Goodall's miraculous conducting, and excellent playing by the orchestra and it all adds up to a stunning recording.
I can only say that in a way it's a shame this set is in English. Were it not, I believe Goodall's 'Ring' would be one of the most talked about, popular, and sought after complete recordings of the cycle. I can only say that I am so happy that I finally opened up to opera recorded in a different language than written.
I have fallen completely in love with Goodall's entire cycle. And, I have fallen in love with 'The Ring' all over again.』
(A powerful reading of the most moving opera in the Ring.) 『This performance of *Die Valkure,* the second and most popular opera in Wagner's Ring Cycle, is musically splendid. Its special significance, however, is that it is sung in English. An English performance of the Ring is perhaps more important than that of any other opera(s), because Wagner's libretti are suffused with his ideas about society, fate, justice, and love. Even if (at times) you need to read along to understand what the singers are saying, *hearing* the lyrics in English is truly stirring in a way that performances in your non-native language cannot match. A particular stand-out on this recording is the Wotan. His timbre, diction, and delivery perfectly embody the troubled god who tries desperately, and in vain, to keep the world under his control. His angst and wrath are utterly convincing.』
(The power of Wagner's music drama is now fully accessible) 『I have never been a fan of opera in translation, but I must say that Andrew Porter's rendering of The Ring in English is amazing. He uses modern, not archaic, English, and the word choice is so very earthy and Germanic that the noble yet somewhat severe atmosphere of the Teutonic myths is conveyed perfectly. The sound, in other words, is an elegantly Germanic, and totally appropriate for the music and the Story it tells. It is not true that you can't understand the English anyway, because you can understand if you care to pay any attention at all. The translation is lucid, and so it the marvelous singing that conveys it.
Goodall's sense of music drama is lush, and takes some getting used to after the crash-and-burn Solti set, but after a time or two it seems just right. Goodall is not always slower than the rest, either; for example, the famous Ride of the Valkyries that begins Act III is quicker than Solti's surprisingly slow and heavy account. It is the most exciting that I have heard--and I have heard quite a few--but it is not so fast that the power is lost in favor of urgency.
This is not an urgent Die Walkure, and it is all the better for it. Goodall takes the time to actually tell the story, and is sensitive to the drama's needs over what could be called convention. For example, Wotan's Farewell doesn't thunder out after Brunnhilde's final declamation, like in so many recordings; rather, Goodall's interpretation is more dreamy, mysterious, and appropriately trance-like, in keeping with the action on stage.
I own the complete Solti Ring, but I must say I will be the first in line to get each new installment of this remarakable Ring as soon they hit the shelves. If you are new to Wagner, and are willing to make the plunge into a complete Ring, then start with this one and see if you want to continue. This recording is definitely one of the great Rings, and the superb translation will open up the work in ways that following the libretto just won't. I promise that you won't be able to put this one away easily. Get it!』

Usually ships in 1 to 2 days Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A Great Britten Collection) 『This collection of Benjamin Britten's music spans his career. The earliest work is the Simple Symphony from 1934 which was composed using juvenilia. Britten preserved his compositions from his earliest years and wove these efforts into the charming Simple Symphony for strings or string quartet. The movement titles: Boisterous Bourree, Playful Pizzicato, Sentimental Sarabande and Frolicsome Finale indicate the childhood origins of the melodies but the symphony shows the maturity of the composer who, at 21, was a master. In particular, the Sarabande exhibits a wonderful depth of feeling while the Bourree, Pizzicato and Finale are delightfully inventive.
The Temporal Variations is another early work (1936) that was performed but not published by the composer. The original work was for oboe and piano but was orchestrated by Colin Matthews for oboe and orchestra and performed in 1994. The Variations, consisting of 9 short movements, is a striking work for oboe and the string orchestra makes this an interesting pairing. A Charm of Lullabies was written in 1947 for Nancy Evans and was scored for voice and piano: the music was orchestrated by Colin Matthews in 1990. The suite is in 5 movements: A Cradle Song, The Highland Balou, Sephestia's lullaby, A Charm and The Nurse's Song.
The Lachrymae was written in 1950 for viola and piano and was revised by Benjamin Britten first in 1970 and in 1976 for viola and string orchestra. The inspiration comes from a song of John Dowland (If my complaints could passions move) and is composed as a theme with 10 variations. The music is introspective and reflective, indicative of the title. The final work, Suite on English Folk Tunes, "A time there was..." was composed during 1974 utilizing an older folk song arrangement of Hankin Booby as the third movement of the suite. The suite was dedicated to the memory of Australian composer Percy Grainger. In fact, Britten quotes the melody Lord Melbourne, the final movement of the suite, from Grainger's transcription. The music is colorful and beautifully orchestrated. The dance-like music of the first four movements is contrasted with the poignant Lord Melbourne, which is quiet with a sad English horn solo; the music fading away.
The CD has, for me, music of Benjamin Britten that I do not have. I was looking for a good performance of the Simple Symphony and I am happy I selected this recording. The music is nicely recorded and beautifully conducted by Britten expert Steuart Bedford. 』
(Really Interesting) 『This is a very rewarding collection of infrequently performed Britten works. The level of performances by the Northern Sinfonia and soloists are excellent. This collection spans Britten's remarkable career, including both the Opus 4 Simple Symphony and the Suite on English Folk Tunes, Britten's last orchestral work. These pieces show the remarkable progression of Britten's work across the length of his career. All pieces, including the Simple Symphony, display Britten's remarkable melodic gifts. The later works in this set reveal the maturation of Britten's skill at orchestration and his ability to exploit the qualities of individual instruments.』
(An Important Britten Collection) 『Another in the reissues from Naxos from the valuable Britten series on the now-defunct Collins Classics, this program was originally published in 1998. Steuart Bedford is undoubtedly the leading Britten conductor and this is left in no doubt in this delightful collection of Britten works that span forty years of his composing life, from the 1934 'Simple Symphony' to the gorgeous set of variations for viola and orchestra, 'Lachrymae,' from 1976. All are played with clarity andélan.
The 'Simple Symphony' for strings is probably the most familiar piece here. It was put together by Britten from pieces he had written in childhood and the movements have witty titles: Boisterous Bourrée, Playful Pizzicato, Sentimental Sarabande, and Frolicsome Finale. Bedford sorts it forth in appropriately simple fashion, letting the music speak for itself. The Northern Sinfonia strings play beautifully for him. 'Temporal Variations' from 1936 was originally for oboe and piano but the presentoboe soloist, Nicholas Daniel, suggested to composer Colin Matthews about ten years ago that he arrange it for oboe and strings and that is the version heard here. It was premièred at the Aldeburgh Festival with Bedford leading the English Chamber Orchestra. It is a neoclassic theme and eight variations in the form of character pieces with titles such as 'March,' 'Oration,' 'Commination' (an archaic term meaning 'denunciation'), 'Resolution.' Daniel is fine advocate for this fourteen-minute miniature oboe concerto.
'A Charm of Lullabies' Op. 41 (1947) is also fairly well-known and has been recorded many times, but usually with the original piano accompaniment. Here we again have an arrangement by Colin Matthews, this time for chamber orchestra, done for the Indianapolis Symphony. It is sung here with simple intensity and wonderful diction by mezzo Catherine Wyn-Rogers. 'Suite on English Folk Tunes' Op. 90 (1974) subtitled 'A time there was ...' was Britten's last purely orchestral work. It combines some seventeenth-century folksongs from Playford's 'The Dancing Master' with songs collected in the twentieth-century from rural sources. This is vintage late Britten with rhythmic complexity, brilliant orchestration and open-faced tunefulness. One hears echoes of the 'Sea Interludes' and 'Prince of the Pagodas' in the creative orchestration.
For me the most riveting of the works recorded here is Britten's masterful 'Lachrymae' Op. 48a (1976) for solo viola and string orchestra. Originally written for viola and piano for William Primrose in 1950, Britten recast it for viola and strings in 1976 for a performance by Cecil Aronowitz and the ECO at Aldeburgh. It is a theme and variations based on two tunes of Dowland: primarily 'If my complaints could passions be' and, in the sixth variation, 'Flow my tears.' Of course the title 'Lachrymae' is taken from the latter song and generally reflects the overall tone of the piece, although Variation 8 is a lively march. It makes brilliant use of the melancholy timbre of the viola and is played movingly here by Philip Dukes. This is the astringent Britten familiar to us from such works as 'Phaedra' and 'Death in Venice.' For all its restriction of means, it is a brilliant and moving work.
We can only be grateful that Naxos has kept these wonderful performances of Britten's music alive by reissuing the Collins/Bedford series.

On the iPhone 3G the front decal worked ok, there was about 1/16" gap that it didn't cover. The back decal is confusing ... I don't see how a flat decal can ever work on a curved surface. All the decal does is bubble up on the corner. I was disappointed with the fit and I would not recommend it.
I then tried the decal on my original iPhone. I found the front decal was too large and hung over the edge. I kind of figured it would but the description said "3G iphone" so I don't know if it was intended for the original iphone or not. The back decal didn't work for the same reasons mentioned above.

If you love the Doctor and are dorks who dream of zipping around in the TARDIS, then this is a magnificent product! Even when it doesn't work. But if you just want a cute phone charm that works most of the time, this probably will not make you happy. We found the charm works best with the cheapy Samsung phones and the nice Blackberry Curve. Not so much with the iPhone GS. But sometimes, and this is a true geek thrill, it works when the home phone rings. Ah, the Doctor! He's coming for us. It even spins when I send a text message - and sometimes it spins before my phone even rings which freaked me out at first.
The only problem I've had so far is that it randomly decides to flash sometimes - maybe someone nearby's phone is going off and since it's not attached to an antenna, it can't tell the difference? We had bought her the Hello Kitty teacup alarm clock several years ago and it has woken up my daughter maybe 4 times in 3 years with the 2 options of buzzer or radio. Usually, the alarm woke ME up&I'd have to lie in my bed, waiting for several minutes, hoping that my sleepy girl would wake on her own&shut the thing off. But no...more often than not I had to get up, go to her room&turn it off myself and then wake her. We had tried a couple of other buzzer-type alarms&none of them worked. I saw one of the reviews of this product that said this alarm clock woke even the soundest sleeper&so we thought that we would give it a try.
The clock arrived on 8/17, we did need the instructions to set it, but it really wasn't hard. This alarm has now woken up our sleepy-head girl 9 / 9 times used! It actually works&best of all, it works without my hearing a thing! I think that it's a combination of the arms moving&the feet glowing&various sounds...whatever it is, it works when NOTHING ever has.
The radio isn't great at all but I don't really care because I don't need my 8-year-old listening to the radio. It does come with a small cable that plugs into her I-Pod shuffle&she can listen to her music over the speaker in the clock radio. The clock responds to the music with a little digital display "light dance." Overall, I would recommend this product』
(Stops working) 『My daughter saved her own money to buy one of the Room Tech Beingz alarm clocks. It worked for several weeks and than stopped working. I would try to plug it in at another time and it would work again and then stop working at random. When I say it stopped working, I mean it was dark and as if no electricity was getting to it. We took it back to the store and got a new one. I got it all set, the alarm worked great for a few days and then one morning, again it stopped working.
I called Hasbro and with relative ease was told, no problem, we are sorry and we will send another one out to you right away. I thought that was really too easy and of course it was. Instead of a new clock, I received a letter explaining that they were all out of stock and couldn't send it right now. I find that really amazing as I look on the Hasbro website and they appear to be available to order and in fact are listed as "in stock". My opinion - don't waste your money on this unreliable product.
』
(Fun Alarm Clock) 『My daughter loves this clock! It's very cute, durable, and fun. We did, however, toss out the directions foolishly thinking that it would be easy to set and turn off. NOT the case! Don't get rid of the directions until you're sure how to operate this product.』
(The Best Toy Yet) 『The first time I got this toy I gave it to my 10-year old daughter. She had so much fun with it, she would use it as a music speaker. It was very good and fun to see my daughter have so much fun. Thank you.』
(A fun alarm clock that gets even the deep sleeper out of bed!) 『we've tried a few other basic alarm clocks but they all failed to get my deep sleeper out of bed in the morning. Since my 9 year old is into all the interactive toys out there thought this one would be a fun one to try (fingers crossed) My DD loves to 'pet' the clock to see it 'smile', make music. The radio is alright but not the best to find many clear channels but its fine for a kid. We bought this clock and used it for the first time on Sunday. I was suprised that it was loud enough to get my DD out of bed, actually she even woke me up to tell me she couldn't turn it off! The only thing that could be better is if this clock radio was also a cd player. But very happy with this product. My DD is asking for the matching lamp for a holiday gift and I think it just may be under our tree.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Just Fascinating!) 『I bought this lamp for my grandson and when he opened it up at his birthday party, not only he, but everyone there, was just mesmerized by it! It's so soothing, but yet cute. He wanted it because he has the alarm clock and the two things interact with each other. He's 10 and I think much younger kids would probably be too rough with the lamp.』
(Cool Item!) 『I bought this for my son who is scared of the dark and refuses to sleep in his room and it's doing it's job! It's cool how it interacts with music and touch. He loves it!』
(Room Tech Beingz are Fun) 『This has to be one of the most fun items the kids got for Christmas. They really enjoy how the clocks and lamps all light up and communicate. The alarm clock is great too!』 『Your room is more than a place to sleep ? it?s where you express yourself. So why not have a lamp that can "express" itself, too? This super cool mood lamp features four different light modes that you can choose from, depending on your own mood. It also has animated light effects that let you know how it's feeling. Its funky color and glowing feet make it a stylish addition to any room. It even reacts to your touch and your music, and "talks" to other BEINGZ accessories (each sold separately), interacting with them from across the room! The funky fixture lights up when the room is dark or when you touch it. So go ahead and make a statement with this expressive addition to your room.
Talk feature works best when items are within fifteen feet of each other and not blocked by walls or furniture. Requires 4 "AA" batteries, included.』

It is okay to fight back. And it does work. I was in a very ugly custody battle. Up until I used this book, I had been wronged more than once. I didn't want to cause harm to anyone, but I do believe in an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth. I also learned that I could do things very easy with this book. It has also taught me that I could substitue or exchange ingredients.
For anyone practicing wicca this is a must have book. You can also learn how to unhex yourself. This is wonderful. Thank you Dorothy.』
(Good Book) 『I really enjoyed this book. It gives more than one method of doing things. I will definately look into other books by this author.』
(Utterly Wicked) 『This book is great. Ms. Morrison is witty and real. I'm having a great time reading it and learning from it.』
(Great Book! Ingenius way of saying the unspeakable.) 『This book is just what the Dr. ordered. She gets to the point that every other author doesn't want to tackle. Yes, there ARE times when being nice isn't going to get anything done. And sometimes you do have to fight fire with fire. I especially loved when Dorothy makes the case for action inspite of "If it harm none, do what thou wilt". It really doesn't always mean being walked on and abused and being willing to just take it. With her addition of the entire Wiccan Reed she shows that self-defense is sometimes the order of the day even if you have to be 'utterly wicked' in that defense. I had just recently experienced a situation where someone had done something to me and I retaliated in kind. So was I wrong? Should I have just 'done unto others as I would...etc"? Well Dorothy addresses this issue as well and I love her answer to people who just want the rest of us to 'take what is dished out'. If a killer enters your home and intends to hurt your family do you worry about the results of your decision to defend your loved ones has on the killer? Probably not, so why should we worry about the effects any attacker suffers when they initated the problem? Reading that just made me smile...very wide.
Kudos to Dorothy Morrison!』
(Informative) 『Utterly Wicked is a great book about a hybrid wiccan hoodoo system of magick. While I have not done any of the spells in this book, it's good to know about it.
This book is more about protection than it is about revenge. There are times when it's necessary to protect yourself from those who wish to do you harm, even the Shaolin Monks practice gung-fu diligently as a physical discipline as well as a powerful form of self-defense.
I think that every individual, no matter what path, could benefit from learning this type of magick, not only for application, but also to be able to recognize the symptoms if someone has tried to hex or curse you.
If one is interested in learning more than just the dark side of hoodoo, check out Catherine Yronwode's Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic: A Materia Magica of African-American Conjure, it's a THE tome of rootwork.
I highly recommend that if one decides to use any of the techniques in this book they consult with the spiritus mundi to see if this action is in accord with the greater forces in the universe. I highly recommend that every person that studies magick practice divination like traditional/hellenistic/medieval astrology, geomancy, i-ching, tarot etc... If the soul of the world gives you the okay to retaliate, then by all means, do it. But if it says no, then you will be the one to have to deal with those consequences.
』 『Hexes, curses and other unsavory notions. Most magical practitioners won't even discuss them. Why? Because they'd much rather find a positive solution that benefits all concerned. And, there's nothing wrong with that. Occasionally, though, our problems are such that nothing in the positive solution arena will handle them. It's time to make a decision to stand tough, be strong, and take definitive action to defend ourselves. And, if you're ready to do that-if you're ready to own that action and take responsibility for it-then Utterly Wicked is the book for you! Jam-packed with more than one hundred rituals, incantations, hexes and curses, this book is the quintessential primer for learning all those magical tricks that no one wants to talk about. Do you know the proper way to enter a cemetery? Utterly Wicked tells you how, as well as the proper methods for collecting and using graveyard dirt. Explore the little known secrets of the 11" fashion doll and see why it's become such a valuable magical tool. Then learn to prepare Hot Foot Powder, Four Thieves Vinegar, Goofer Dust, and other magical components specifically designed to obliterate your toughest problems. Most important, though, you'll also find the tools to protect yourself, your family, and your home from ever being bothered with these sorts of difficulties again. A must have for any Witch's bookshelf!』

While Hoodoo magick contains folk spells intended to help you harness the forces of nature to improve your life, you may also look upon Hoodoo as a tool for programming the subconscious mind. Subconscious mind communicates through the language of symbols, and using candles, oils and incense and other tools helps the person to more vividly subjectively experience the desired outcome, and it may be particularly helpful for people who have a challenge visualizing, as the purpose of the ritual is to help you to engage as many of your senses as possible.
This charming book contains simple spells for cleansing your home of any adverse energies, for attracting love and wealth into your life, for bringing about healing, for spiritual strength, good luck, for stopping gossip, and many others. It also provides brief information on different color correspondences, the use of gems, herbs, how to make some basic oil and incense formulas, as well as washes, how to create gris gris bags, how to work with magic lamps, and prayers to different saints.
Different saints may be called upon for assistance with different problems, e.g.
* St. Clara - for understanding in all matters * Our Lady of Lourdes - for healing the sick * Archangel Michael - for protection
In Hoodoo, it is popular to work with psalms, so the book also contains recommendations for what psalms may be helpful for which purpose, e.g.
* to have a good luck in all that you do - psalm 57 * for thanksgiving or recovery from illness - psalm 30 * for greater spiritual awareness - psalm 99
Here is a part of the chant for a peaceful home:
"Love, shine your light from above, make this home a paradise of love. All for one and one for all, the motto for this home of love. These hearts filled with love we see, care for each other constantly. Always ready to do what's right, never to harm or the other fight. Love, shine your light from above, to make this house a paradise of love."』

(Enchanting movie!!! Kids love it,and adults too!!!) 『I saw this movie as a 2 year old, and I never really understood it, until now the digitally remastered edition features subtitles as well as clear finished product of the old classic fairytale.
Jonathan and Anna are simple honest people living in the forest, one day a fairy grants them a child. Tom Thumb as he is called, is a naughty but good boy who likes to play with his toys as soon as the grown ups are away. The toys come alive in a way never seen before! This is without the implementation of computer generated images, just great manipulation and excellent directing. I give this movie 5 stars!!!』
(Fun Family Film) 『Though I wouldn't rank this as a classic family film I would allow that "tom thumb" is impervious to criticism. Almost 50 years old the entertainment value here is timeless. In this day of CGI director George Pal's visual flair especially his utilization of Puppetoons still impress. Russ Tamblyn as Tom is an infectiously energetic marvel. (You will be in for a "shell-shock" of a ride.) 『"What's it like being you?"- A classic line if ever there was one.
You have probably never seen a movie quite like Naked. It begins with a random rape scene and it ends..., well let's just say it doesn't so much end, as the movie finishes.
Naked gives you a tour of the dark underbelly of London as seen through the eyes of Johnny, an anti-hero if there ever was one. An intellectual who is on the run from.., life? the law? his own demons? You can't really say.
The dialogue is fascinating, the scenes bleak as you view the desolation and wasteland of both London and the characters lives.
It all takes place over the course of a day or two, and when I was finished watching it, I sat with my mouth agape for several minutes as my brain continued to process what I had just seen.
Kudos to Mike Leigh for making a film where the characters truly dominate, and where you really, really, really need to pay attention to understand what appears to be going on.
Highly Recommended.』
(a brilliant film) 『this is definitely my favorite mike leigh movie of all. david thewlis is brilliant as the misanthropic main character and his wanderings through the city at night and myriad quotable diatribes are engaging and really draw you into the story. the people he meets along the way are engaging and unique. it's definitely not for those who want to watch the typical hollywood fare with happy endings and blindly optimistic main characters. it is a very thought provoking movie with interesting characters and i would recommend seeing it even if you are not familiar with the other films of leigh.』
(Leigh veered off into thief, wife, lover, cook country and shouldna have) 『This is an unfortunate film, actually. Although, mostly interesting it begins to grate upon one midway through. Mike Leigh's strengths are his ability to demonstrate the 'lives' of working class britons with heaps of wit, charm, cleverness and bits of rather heavy-handed (tho not quite sappy) emotionalism. He's best when he keeps it light overall whilst making one or two quite heavy points. The problem with Naked is that it is all about heavy with very little light. In addition, Mr. Leigh tries but fails to lade his tale with deep metaphorical meaning in the way that the rather hideously bad film The Thief, Cook, Wife and Lover did although without the fantasmagorical posturing, pretension, piffle and puck. In a nutshell this is the tale of a working class Mancunian who is either insane or being driven insane by the workings of his mind. His problem is that he is too smart for his class (that's breeding, mind), which shows in his glib verbosity and abstruse philosophical riffs which he bundles up in clever entendre and verbal puns. The problem is that he is speaking university to working class yobs and yobettes which causes him to be alienating and alienated to those he interacts with, rather assaults. His failure, or inability to connect on a purely personal, human level further damaging his diseased mind which causes him to act out more and so on. Mr. Leigh attempted to stir in a few different ingredients into his metaphorical stew but he fails to, for instance, demonstrate that the working class protagonist's angry, abusive manner is equivalent to the posh anti-heroe's equally angry abusive behaviour with the difference being only that one can afford to 'pay' for his rapine behaviour while the other must merely take his rapes for free. I'm uncertain why Mr. Leigh brought that psycho-social angle into the story because he had enough semi-meaningless flux to deal with in the story as it is. There are other random bits of disconnectedness that I shan't bother to comment upon. To sum up, this is an interesting but unentertaining, non-thought-provoking movie that is worth watching if you are a big fan of Leigh's movies.』
(I DIDN'T KNOW IT WAS POSSIBLE TO MAKE A MOVIE THIS BAD) 『The fact that this movie snatched worthwhile film festival awards from any other movies is shocking and ridiculous. ANY other film is better than this! It has all of the worst traits of other movies that I used to think were bad, but now, in comparison to "Naked," I am realizing were actually good. These sour traits are: rambling, meaningless, nonsensical, "existential," blathering BS; disjointed scenes and lack of a story; characters that the audience has NO reason to like or continue watching for ANY reason; violent, misogynistic, nasty scenes that have no explanation nor reason to be included; a boring, annoying, worthless schmuck for a lead who should just be killed off to put viewers out of their misery; but most importantly, lack of entertainment. Films are supposed to be entertaining, moving, provocative, interesting, humorous -- whatever the genre, a movie must have a REASON to be watched, a motivation for the viewer. "Naked" has none. The only reason I watched it is because I was told to study the acting technique for a film that I am working on, and believe me, it is NOT a film that holds your attention. After an hour and a half of pure agony, I fast-forwarded through the rest, and sure enough, nothing really happened. I'm so annoyed that I bought this! (Amazon is great, though.)』 『Studio: Image Entertainment Release Date: 09/20/2005 Run time: 131 minutes』 『In between his breakthrough film (Life Is Sweet) and his world sensation (Secrets and Lies), filmmaker Mike Leigh created his most abrasive and daring film,Naked. This "Angry Young Man" for the 1990s follows an acidic wanderer (Cannes award winner David Thewlis) who observes a corrosive Britain. An intellectual, bitter film filtered with debauchery and black humor,Nakedfollows the bemusing Johnny as he crosses in and out of doorways, drifting into old acquaintances and new lost souls. It is more of a character film than sheer entertainment and thus it can be hard to watch, but it offers one of the great performances of the 1990s. Thewlis would have been an Oscar shoo-in if he'd worn a tuxedo and repressed his emotions. He didn't, and his brilliant work went unrecognized in mainstream America.--Doug Thomas』

And it is almost identical with the film tag-line "He came. He saw. He conquered. One sister at a time." Gerard Stembridge's film belongs to the long suffered and rarely done well genre of romantic comedy or so called chick flick but this movie was a nice surprise. It has a twist to it, is amusing, enjoyable and funny, at least up until the very final. In the end, the writer/director seemed to have lost an interest of simply did not know what to do with his main character who could've been a lighter version or a younger brother to Pasolini's mysterious visitor in Theorem or, if asked Who are you, he could've answered, Just your average, horny little devil, not unlike Mr. Darryl van Horn. Yes, About Adam may not use any original ideas and it brings to mind immediately the movies as different as Theorem; Sliding Doors; He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not; the Spanish Oscar winner for the Best Foreign movie, BellÉpoque, The Witches of Eastwick, and more than one Woody Allen's dramedies, Hannah and Her Sisters, particularly. The story of a charming mysterious man who makes every member of one family fall hard for him simply by being there and expressing the interest to each person's problems, troubles, andneeds has been told many times but I personally was amused and smiled more than once while watching this little comedy and I found it if not a bright lost gem but a nice way to spend an hour and half following the adventures of a nice guy , every girl's dream come true who could make women happy because he knew exactly what each of them wanted, needed, longed for, lacked in her life, and dreamed about. I found especially funny always changing and adjusted for a particular listener the story of the powerful sexy mysterious collectible Jaguar, the perfect car for a sexy, mysterious, perfect man.Cinematically, the movie that takes place in Dublin is very pleasant, and I did not mind the repeating narrative that helped to look at the same scenes from very different perspectives and unexpected points of view. The young and talented actors and actresses including pre-Almost Famous very cute and singing Kate Hudson, Frances O'Connor and Charlotte Bradley as her older sisters, and Stuart Townsend as irresistible Adam all made their characters likable which is important for this type of film.

(Farce not comedy) 『'About Adam' is billed as a comedy but it's safer to classify it as a farce. It's set in Dublin and it focuses on a family of three sisters and one brother who all become besotted with Adam, a charming Lothario, who insinuates himself into their lives. Unlike most American films where men end up chasing a beautiful woman, 'About Adam' turns the tables and we're treated to the farcical machinations of women who can no longer control their passions when attracted to that one special 'mysterious' man.
'About Adam' has a Rashomon-like plot where the story is told from the successive points of view of each sibling. We start off from Lucy's point of view (Kate Hudson) who meets Adam at her place of employment (where she works as a waitress/singer). Lucy is looking for a man who will sweep her off her feet. I'm not sure how Adam manages to press all the right buttons of these women, but they all become besotted with him. The initial seduction of Lucy goes on for way too long and after awhile her obsession with him becomes tiresome (the first 30 minutes is the weakest part of the film).
After about half an hour into the film, conflict finally emerges. Soon after meeting Lucy, Adam decides to seduce Lucy's sister, Laura (Frances O'Connor). Laura is more intellectual than Lucy, studying for her PhD in poetry. And of course Adam is familiar with the very obscure poetry Lucy has been studying at school and recites it to her, pressing her buttons. Before you know it, Laura is stripping off HER clothes for him! Adam isn't finished. Brother David finds himself attracted to Adam and fantasizes having a bi-sexual affair with him. He doesn't actually act upon his fantasies but Adam somehow engenders a passionate spark in him and he ends up with a new invigorated love life with his girlfriend.
Finally there's Alice, trapped in a loveless marriage who also has a child. Alice is aware that Adam has been playing around with BOTH of her sisters and when she finally gives in to Adam before his marriage to Lucy, it's on HER terms. She knows it's just a fling, but the brief affair with Adam awakens her long repressed sexual passions.
For those who were 'offended' by this film, they completely miss the purpose of farce. In the words of the noted drama critic Eric Bentley, in farce, one is permitted the outrage without the consequences! Farce allows its audience to experience deep-seated desires vicariously! While the sisters feel there is some deeper meaning in Adam's name (noting that Adam is the name of the progenitor of all men), one should liken him more to the Greek God Pan, famous for his sexual powers and often depicted with an erect phallus.
The world of 'About Adam' features no recriminations. While some feelings are ruffled, none of the characters suffer any permanent psychic damage. Even Laura, probably the most besotted and jealous of the sisters, accepts Adam's marriage to Lucy and we see her holding hands with her school supervisor at the end of the film, now ready for a mature romance in the real world. And although Adam is always lying to each of the women about his background, the lies are white lies--inconsequential; again resulting in no harm (Adam even suggests to Lucy who is having second thoughts about getting married just as they're about to tie the knot, that people don't always have to know each other's secrets; that way, petty jealousies are averted!).
'About Adam' is like a gentle breeze. It's a light-hearted farce not to be taken too seriously (for all of you offended by its alleged 'immorality', I say get a life!). In addition, it's an original take on the desire for passion in our lives. On the other hand, by the end of the film, we realize that the film's tension has dissipated. All that fun 'passion' unleashed in each sibling by the charming rake Adam, has become a bit repetitious and overdone. In other words, we get the point! By the end there are no more surprises! Since 'About Adam' is a bit offbeat and good-natured, I give it a '3'. But honestly, while 'About Adam' is definitely worth watching, one viewing is enough.

(A fizzy fun cottoncandy kind of film!) 『My partner was a bit disturbed by the proceedings of "About Adam". Too much deception for his tastes, but I don't think one can take the story of this film too seriously. It's about Adam, of course, this gorgeous guy (played by the gorgeous Stuart Townsend) who meets and becomes involved with the lovely Lucy (played by the lovely Kate Hudson, who has a wonderful singing voice that she gets to display in the flick). It's also about Lucy's two sisters and her brother and how they get to know her new boyfriend. Frances O'Connor delivers a terrific performance as Lucy's bookwormish sister who evolves into a new person as the film goes along. And I mustn't forget to mention that the film was filmed in Ireland (Dublin to be exact) and the accents are all quite believable.
"About Adam" is not a groundbreaking film, but it does offer some nice comic performances--and I enjoyed the way the writer/director Gerard Stembridge sets up the film from many different points of view. It's light entertainment, and sometimes you just want to curl up on the couch with just such a movie. At least I do.』
(Kate has the best hair!!) 『Okay, this was a funny movie that had a great plot and developed characters, but I'll admit that wasn't the thing I love most about this movie. Kate Hudson's character has the best clothes and cutest hair in this movie. She has a zillion costume changes and I looked forward to seeing what she'd wear next. If you're not that into clothes, watch it for its humor and wit.』
(Adam, it seems, has a BIG problem ...) 『... he can't seem to keep his zipper up! Now in real life, this would be a problem. But in the movies, this sort of thing can be very funny, for a person with an open mind such as myself. Adam shags basically anyone with 2 legs - dudes are not excluded. Stuart Townsend smiles, smirks, grins, his way through this entire movie, looking like he's having the time of his life while doing so. We find out at the end of the movie why he is the way he is. His simple statement of fact: "It just makes me happy to make other people happy". Hey, I'm all for that, and though I wouldn't go around humping people to prove my point, I'm all for helping my fellow man :)
I really liked this movie, a friend recommended it to me, and I'm glad she did. I think it is very good, I'm not sure I would call it excellent, but I did enjoy it very much, and was worth the price to buy&own.』 『If you think that the only thing impish Kate Hudson (Almost Famous) lacks is a lilting Irish accent, this movie is for you. InAbout AdamHudson plays Lucy, the youngest daughter of a middle-class Irish family, who thinks she's found the perfect guy. Adam (Stuart Townsend) not only brings flowers and takes her on romantic getaways, he even gets along with her family. Just at the moment when the sweetness of their romance seems intolerable, it turns out that he's also been romancing Lucy's sister Laura (Frances O'Connor fromMansfield ParkandA.I.), for whom he's constructed an entirely different personality. And this is only the first of a series of secrets unveiled and eventually uncovered by the third sister, Alice (Charlotte Bradley). The story ofAbout Adamisn't particularly believable, but its entertaining exploration of desire and self-delusion rings true.--Bret Fetzer』 『A waitress falls for a handsome customer who seduces her her two sisters her brother and her brothers girlfriend.
