(The Beasties are back!)
The 1st single off the Beastie Boys' 1st studio album in 6 years,"Ch-Check it Out", is definitely a track you should ch-check out. The song has a nice, ol'-school feel to it, which is good if you're a long time fan of the Beastie Boys. This might be undesirable for some people since the Beasties have used the same style in their songs for years, but it's nice to see that these 3 guys can still turn it out in their mid-to-late 30's. The only problem I have with this song is with the mixing, the horns in background seem too loud and they sometimes drown out the voices. Still, it's not much of a problem if you're a Beastie Boys fan and you'll enjoy this song even if you're not.

(Two very different albums)
These two albums were not originally released together, and to me, it does not seem like they should be. They really don't have much in common besides the fact that they're both very good.

Chyekk China Doll is a very upbeat album with lots of great Ka-Spelian waltzes, which aaAzhyd China Doll has a much darker feel. Perhaps they were paired up like this to suit different moods!

(An attempt to bring old characters to a modern age)

(Not worth the cost it took to make it....DO NOT BUY or WATCH THIS CRAP!)

(A better idea for a DVD of Modern Looney Tunes shorts...)

(Entertainment value&Collectability HIGH!)

(Horrible, horrible, horrible)
True, this collection is not quite up to the standards of the classic clips. However, it's really not THAT bad. Even ok Looney Tunes are still far superior to most of today's fare, in my opinion.

Here's a listing of what's included on the DVD:
Sports Blab#1
Sports Blab#2
Aluminum Chef#1
Aluminum Chef #2
Tear Factor
Junkyard Run#1
Junkyard Run#2
Junkyard Run#3
Cagey Witness
Inherit the Windbag

Bleach, Blanket, Bang-O
Helter Shelter

Thank God I found this for 99 cents in a bargain bin - it's the worst thing I've ever seen....

POORLY ANIMATED
POORLY CREATED
VOICE OVER IS HORRIFIC

and if you buy this for more than a penny - you're a fool like I was...thank heavens I only bought it cheap on VHS - if I had bought it on DVD I would have been more ticked off...

I can at least give it to someone with kids who won't know the difference, but for us adults...don't insult us futher - give us the originals, restored, but don't try to sell us this WORTHLESS PIECE OF JUNK!

Hey Mr. WARNER, what's about a 2-DVD-set with ALL the "Modern Looney Tunes Shorts" from 1987 to 2004???:

All the cartoon are excellents but hard-to-find (only in old VHS or VCD) but ALL the fanatics of Looney Tunes want this compilation in DVD!!!!!!!!!

I think this is a Good idea...

That's all Folks!

The Looney Tunes: "Reality Check" DVD compiles the second half of the webtoons, exclusively produced for the Looney Tunes website. I eagerly waited as these toons premiered, and then disappeared from the web during 2003, in anticipation of "Looney Tunes: Back in Action." As "Back In Action" was released on DVD, so were these compilations ("Reality..." and "Stranger than Fiction!").

The folks who are ripping these DVDs a new spindle hole are missing the point: These DVDs are NOT representing themselves as "Classic Looney Tunes," and certainly an uninformed/underinformed consumer would NEVER mistake this product as a repackage of the classic toons. YES, they are flash-animation based, HOWEVER, the audio is cleaned up from the original flash files, and is nowhere near as ear-piercing as they originally appeared on the internet. Those who gripe about these DVD sets obviously don't wish for the classic characters to be animated any longer, and are supportive of such other series as "Loonatics: Unleashed," the ultimate rip-off of the Looney Tunes legacy. To have the classic characters appear in NEW material, regardless of method of animation is fantastic! These DVDs should have sold out of their initial run, inspiring Warner to perhaps take a look at their Looney Tunes property a bit more closely.

The voice acting is NOT as bad as portrayed by these one-star doubters. In fact, some of the top voice talent available was tapped for this series, not the least of which being the all-star Joe Alaskey! Again, those negative reviewers are not taking in to account that nearly ALL original Looney Tunes voices were done by Mel Blanc, who sadly has not been with us (let alone speaking!) for many years now! The voice actors chosen for this set (as well as much of the new Looney Tunes animation) have been first-rate.

Could the negative response from these sets have been the reason why the new theatrical shorts have been appearing on overseas products (see "Looney Tunes: Back in Action" Australian version) instead of here in the states? Probably not, but if this sort of response keeps up, I'm sure Warner will turn its shoulder to the Looney Tunes as far as new property goes in the future, and continue producing the "Golden Collection" disc sets, and little else.

The gags are brilliant on this set, and the pairings are not likely to be seen elsewhere ever again (unless they release a new volume of webtoons, which I'm eagerly awaiting as well!). You be the judge, however. Certainly, many used and NEW copies are available from amazon.com and Amazon sellers - give them a try! What have you got to lose, save for a little shelf space between your Golden Collection sets?

I rented this for a dollar last week, and I want my dollar back!
The other reviewers have done an excellent job of bashing this abomination already. The "Survivor" take-off had one laugh (I now forget what that was, the rest was so bad), but the rest was unfunny. Fans will have noticed the occasional plagiarism of classic LT lines such as "I'm only twee and a half years old", but even these were placed in contexts that didn't make a lick of sense.
If you must buy this DVD, please burn it and send the ashes to Warner Bros.

Hold on tight! Because all your favorite Looney Tunes characters are zooming into a head-on collision with the world's most popular reality TV shows! Th-th-th-that's right, folks! It's time for a REALITY CHECK! Overflowing with outrageous Warner-style comic mayhem, these all-new Toons spoof TV like it's never been spoofed before! Plus, you'll get a load of exclusive added gotta-have-'em DVD bonus features that are positively Looney!

In this hilarity-jam-packed volume: Porky and Tweety give you the score and more in Sports Blab. Granny makes Sylvester, Daffy and Yosemite Sam cry uncle in Tear Factor. Then, Bugs, Porky, Daffy, Taz and the rest of the gang are outcast, outclassed and out-to-lunch in a kooky quest to become the lone survivor (get it?) in the spectacularly zany Toon Marooned! And there's more wackiness on the schedule with reality show send-ups from Aluminum Chef to Judge Granny!

(Can't Live Without This Book!)

(work reference)

(If you prefer books over the Internet.)

(Search Engines Provide the Same Info)
With a whole pile of books sitting on my work bookshelf, this is the one book I use EVERY SINGLE day in my private investigative/background screening business. Since we don't just use the "big national databases" for our searches and are committed to tracking down information all the way down to the local courthouse, this book is earmarked and a bit tattered after a year of heavy use. Have bought 4 copies for my employees already.
I needed a dependable reference for my line of work and this is it-costs alot less then the book stores.
Some people don't enjoy reading a computer screen. If that's you, then you'll appreciate the book.
This information is easily found on-line using any of the reliable search engines. I will probably keep this book on hand as a back-up.

The only Master Guide to online public record searching, The sixth edition details nearly 10.000 sites, both government agencies and private sources. This new edition is completely revised and updated.

(Nothing to get excited about)

(vastly overrated)

(Non-fiction at its finest)

(Outstanding)

(Anthologies of interesting prople)
Susan Orlean, notable to most as a writer for The New Yorker, became the literary "It" girl in 2003 with the help of the movie "Adaptation" (the movie based on her book The Orchid Thief). In an attempt to capitalize on that book, "Bullfighter..." was released.

The book takes some of Orlean's favorite and most popular articles and complies them into what appears to be a theme about remmarkable people. Orlean speaks candidly in the begining of her book about always wanting to be a writer and ironicly this introduction proves to be some of the best writing in the book. The rest of the books tends to be pretty much hit and miss. A fasinating story about a taxi driver who is in reality an African king somehow ends up being not so fasinating. Another story about a 10 year old is down right boring. My favorite ended up being about a store owner in New York that only sells buttons.

This is not to say that Orlean is a bad writer, she's not: however she writes with a sometimes akward detachment that made it hard for me to enjoy these "personal" articles.

Look at the cover of this book and you'll see who and what it's really about. It's all about SO; her subject matter is irrelevant both to her and, consequently, to the reader. Worse, even her style, which seems to sucker in a lot of poeple, is not exactly her own. If you want to read what she's read, and cribbed from, track down a copy of Mr. Personality, by Mark Singer, also a New Yorker writer but a far finer one. Really, I don't see how SO can pass MS in the NYer's hallways and not hide her head in shame. Singer is by far the more human writer. He reserves his style for his short Talk of the Town pieces, drifting it to the side for his longer, more important pices. Unlike SO, he knows when to take it down a notch in order to add some real heart and feeling to his writing. SO's stuff, from one story to the next, is stylistically the same beginning to end. Half.com often has copies of Singer's book. When you find it, be sure to check out what's on the cover; it ain't a picture of Singer.
Like her predecessor Joan Didion, Susan Orlean writes of the wide range of human experience--from a traveling gospel group in the South to a budding basketball star--and in doing so presents a portrait of America that is both comprehensive and engaging. What's even better is that she does it without ever being sentimental.

While I liked all of the essays in this volume, my favorites were ones that showed lives of the"average"American, like Heather Heaton, a young journalist covering the events of a small town, and, of course,"The American Male, age 10."Ms. Orlean has a way of following her subjects around&illuminating their lives, without ever getting in the way. Truly professional work, and I only have to say: give us more!
For anyone who enjoys reading profile pieces in major national magazines, you will love Orlean's superb writing! Her choices of interview subjects are far and varied, from the American Man, Aged 10 to the Female Bullfighter, hence the title of the book.
You will be delighted and most of all, impressed by her deft writing and wonderfully descriptive passages. You will not be disappointed!

When I had finished"The Bullfighter checks her Make-up", it had occured to me that many of the rich and famous are quite dull when you take away the riches and fame. You don't believe me? Read an issue of Vanity Fair. In every issue, there will always be some hot star featured that month. This person may sizzle on celluloid, sound great on CD, etc. but is boring as heck or so self absorbed that you go running to a preening, navel gazing 14 year old for some company. None of Ms. Orlean's subjects are in this category. Whether it's a buff Boxer(the dog) named Biff or the Ghanian King who drives a cab; these people are unique.
In fact Ms. Orleans seems to find the unique in the ordinary. Her first subject is the"American Man"aged 10. Somehow, when reading about this fellow you are paying attention. His interests seem to be no different than other boys at that time. Yet you read and want to finish this. And to think her bosses wanted her do a profile of the then 10 year old Macauley Culkin! Good thing she got her way.
Many of these vignettes, in fact, would not be what a typical editor would request from a writer. In the sport of Women's Tennis, for instance, she doesn't profile the prominent Williams sisters but the lesser known Maleev sisters. In the dog show world, there isn't a profile of the prize poodle, but a contender in the Working Dog Category. The choices are unexpected and always a treat.
I would recommend this book to most everyone. Even a subject in which I had no initial curiosity such as Best Working Dog caught my eye. As for the Bullfighter...she's there as well. Happy reading!

Susan Orlean,New Yorkerstaff writer and author ofThe Orchid Thief, has always been drawn to the extraordinary in the ordinary, so when herEsquireeditor asked her to profile the child actor Macaulay Culkin using the title "The American Man at Age Ten," she insisted instead on writing about a "typical" kid. The result--one of the 20 profiles drawn from magazines such asEsquire,The New Yorker, andRolling Stonefor this collection--is a vivid window into the life of an ordinary and endearing boy from New Jersey who grapples with girls, environmental destruction, and the magical childhood landscape "that erodes from memory a little bit every day." Orlean has two tricks up her sleeve that make her profiles irresistible. First, she's got a mean hook. Take this lead: "Of all the guys who are standing around bus shelters in Manhattan dressed in nothing but their underpants, Marky Mark is undeniably the most polite." Second, she has an uncanny way of drawing her subjects. Bill Blass "is a virtuoso of the high-pitched eyebrow and the fortissimo gasp," while a boxer (the dog kind) wears "the earnest and slightly careworn expression of a small-town mayor."

Orlean is a New Yorker herself, and most of her subjects hail from the Big Apple, including such unique personas as a real estate broker who can describe the inside of almost any apartment in the city ("Walking down a Manhattan street with her is a paranormal experience"); Nat, the new tailor at Manhattan Valet; her hairdresser; the city's most popular clown; an Ashanti king who drives a taxi; and the owner of the only buttons-only store in America. The author is keenly observant and always tries to walk in her subject's shoes, even when it's a show dog ("If I were a bitch, I'd be in love with Biff Truesdale"). When she does tackle the rich and famous, she uses these same talents to create portraits so intimate and zesty they're unlike any other. Orlean writes that her only justification for choosing a story is that she cares about it, and it shows. Her fondness for her subjects rubs off as she draws us into the tight and exquisite focus of their mundane and fascinating lives.--Lesley Reed
The bestselling author of The Orchid Thief is back with this delightfully entertaining collection of her best and brightest profiles. Acclaimed New Yorker writer Susan Orlean brings her wry sensibility, exuberant voice, and peculiar curiosities to a fascinating range of subjects—from the well known (Bill Blass) to the unknown (a typical ten-year-old boy) to the formerly known (the 1960s girl group the Shaggs).

Passionate people. Famous people. Short people. And one championship show dog named Biff, who from a certain angle looks a lot like Bill Clinton. Orlean transports us into the lives of eccentric and extraordinary characters—like Cristina Sánchez, the eponymous bullfighter, the first female matador of Spain—and writes with such insight and candor that readers will feel as if they’ve met each and every one of them.

The result is a luminous and joyful tour of the human condition as seen through the eyes of the writer heralded by the Chicago Tribune as a“journalist dynamo.”
