Back in the last century, I had the opportunity to not only jam with these guys, but to shoot the cover photos of "Check This Action." Although they continued to gain a following after this release, the raw, sweaty feel of this debut was the 'real deal.'
This is a very good rock and roll record, but "jbesanko" is right, "Forget About the Danger..." is the high water mark for the LeRoi's. They really made a big noise on that one - "Pretty Little Lights of Town" and "Eternally Blue". Great stuff. I had "Forget About.." on cassette back in the 1980s, and I cannot find it anywhere now. I assume it is out of print. If anyone knows where to get a copy...
My first brush with the LeRois was when I picked up their"Forget About The Danger..."EP, which blew me away back in '84. I then immediately searched out Check This Action, which had been released the previous year on the local Jungle Records label. Rounder records subsequently released the 13-song collection on CD in 1994, and I have both versions...This is a great rock&roll record, featuring some excellent guitar and vocal work by both Steve Doerr and Don Leady (who later went on to form the Tail Gators, a wonderful swamp-rock outfit)..."Are You With Me Baby (Say Yeah),""Chicken and Honey,""Steady With Betty,"Rockin' Daddy"and"Eternally Blue"are all endlessly listenable (although I prefer the EP version of"Eternally"); and Leady apparently enjoyed doing"Til It's Too Late"on this album so much that he later recorded it with the Tail Gators as well (and why not?--it's a great song!). I once saw the LeRois and the Blasters in concert together; though in all honesty the Blasters may be the best live outfit there is, the Brothers weren't far behind. Highly recommended.
Austin TX- 1982-83. The Stray Cats bring a kinda rockabilly to the national airwaves. But for the reefer chuggin, beer swillin roadhouse sound, Austin turned to the Le Roi brothers. Rythm on a Les Paul Jr, lead on a Tele, these cats weren't no posers, man they threw it through the wall. Drummers, listen up- Mike Buck is the King. Glorious 4 piece music. Bob Dylan, ask Charlie Sexton about these guys....
I remember seeing the Leroi Brothers way back before there was a World Wide Web. They were, and are, the most consistently good band Austin has ever produced--and I've seen a LOT of Austin bands. Hell, what am I saying; they're one of the best damn bands in the whole world. As for this LP, it's amazing how well it stands up. If it stands tall now, just think what it was like in 1983! Amongst all the crapola spawned in the early '80s Roots Rock Revival, The Leroi Brothers towered over the competition. Believe it or not, some people compared them to those sweaty, earnest, sadly misled brothers from California, The Blasters. I see no resemblance; and don't let anyone tell you they sound alike.

Unfortunately, back then, just like today, The Leroi Brothers are somehow overlooked while jokers like Bryan Seltzer hog the limelight. Oh well, Rock&Roll had its day in the sun. Despite the weed like growth of retro this, retro that and retro everything, it's still as hard to find good Rock and Roll as it is to find good jazz or blues--if not harder. But you can make it a lot easier on yourself if you buy this and every other Leroi Brothers release.
The LeRoi Brothers are the quintessential Texas roadhouse band, playing backseat, backbeat-driven rhythm and blues, rockabilly and blue-collar rock'n'roll with the grit, grease and power of an old V-8 engine.

(NO "AT THE FILMORE EAST JUNIOR")

The Allman brothers had a stark choice before them, in the wake of the tragic losses of Duane and Berry: give everything up, sitting in Sackcloth&Ashes for the rest of their lives...or picking up the pieces and moving on! I'm exceedingly glad they chose the latter. Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil is NOT the boys attempting to recreate The Fillmore East...rather, it's the perfect complement to the ABB's landmark initial live album. Gregg&Co. very wisely decided not to even attempt to replace Duane with another guitarist ( at least not for a decade! ). Instead, they found a superb blues piano player in Chuck Leavell, also a wonderful complement to Gregg's B-3 organ. With the exception of Elizabeth Reed, there is no redundancy here: all new tunes, with a profoundly different "intensity"; yet faithful to that classic Allman Brothers Sound. While I respect bands such as Led Zeppelin deciding not to carry on after the loss of an original member, I am glad other groups do indeed live to fight another day...given an average longevity of three or four decades, it's inevitable that personnel changes will happen.
I just listened to this recording and i have to say i was very impressed, several of the live tunes have a more jazz flavored tempo due to the excellent work of longtime Stones pianist Chuck Leavell. The high points include Elizabeth Reed, Southbound and Jessica all delivered with skill by the brothers lineup at the time. With D. Betts doing all the guitar work and the added keyboard the listener experiences a tight 6 man unit delivering the tunes with the skill and precision that the ABB are known for. I don't understand the critical reviews of this CD as the performances are top notch and the song selection is fine.
Dollar gas? Oh, that's a real knee-slapper there! And isn't it so great that they titled it that in the midst of an oil crisis similar to the one we're having now? Well, I guess it was common in Chuck Berry's time. Anyway, I wish I could say something good about this album. Because, cliché as it is to say this, the Allman Brothers are the best live band ever. But hey, even they have off nights, and besides, they didn't even want this released. Now, had Tom Dowd respected their wishes, the group's legacy as a live band would be 100% intact. Unfortunately, this was not the case. Instead, this was pumped out as a stopgap while the group was busy with the Gregg Allman "Pot, Meet Kettle" Drug Trial. So it's basically a collection of lackluster live material from the group's mid-'70s incarnation, which means it draws heavily from Brothers and Sisters - five of that album's seven are present here ("Jessica", "Come and Go Blues", "Wasted Words", "Southbound" and of course "Ramblin' Man"), and they're all given sluggish, perfunctory, bored treatments. Of course, they're all fine songs in the studio (and "Come and Go Blues" kicks butt), but that matters not because here the groupplays them all as half-heartedly as can be. But not even those are the biggest letdown on the album. That would be "Ain't Wastin' Time No More". It's taken in slow-mo. And that doesn't fit the "no regrets!" message of that song. And hey, I know "It's Not My Cross to Bear" is supposed to be world-weary. That's what made the original version so good. But the group doesn't sound world-weary, they sound stoned. I mean "stoned beyond all reasonable functioning" stoned, not just "kinda stoned" like the Allman Brothers always were because it's the Allman Brothers we're talking about and not some rock band that wasn't stoned all the time (which translates to "no rock band that ever existed"). And when you're stoned that badly you shouldn't be playing. You should be in rehab. And not telling on some roadie for drug possession just to get yourself out of jail, a-HEM, Gregg! Oh well. Never been ahuge fan of "Don't Want You No More", and it's a disappointment here, too. Makes sense, I guess. There are a couple showstoppers - I simply can't hear "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" too many times, and "Can't Lose What You Never Had" sports some fantastic jamming. But on a whole? Skip it, before someone else does! Aye, skip it, and gravitate towards the many great live Allmans albums. I'm talkin' At Fillmore East, the Atlanta International Pop Festival album, Live at American University, Live at Ludlow Garage, both of the Evening With albums, and some choice concerts you can find on Wolfgang'sVault.
If you are a Dickey Betts fan like I am,I highly recommend this album.Dickey has always been overshadowed by Duanes legend,but here he gets a chance to shine in the spotlight alone.He is featured playing on spirited versions of many of the Allman Brother classics.This line-up would be the only time the ABB would feature one guitar player.Chuck Leavells piano work is a great counter part to Dickey on the longer improvisations.The versions of "Southbound","Ramblin Man","Dont Want You No More-Its Not My Cross To Bear",and "Jessica" show Dickey at his best and why he should be considered among the best lead players of all-time.
What a difference five years can make. In the span of those years the Allman Brothers lost two of its founding members since its thermonuclear release of AT THE FILMORE EAST. Gone were Duane Allman (truly one of great guitars of his time) and bassist Berry Oakley (underestimated as a bassist and the writer of the classic song **Ramblin' Man**). Up to this point, the Allmans made no attempt to replace Duane Allman to preserve the dual guitar attack so loved by their fans. Gregg Allman did play some chords now and then; but his place was still behind the organ and keyboards. This left Dickey Betts carrying the lion's share of the guitar chores for the band--not that he minded all that much. Betts was quite talented in his own right and had been overshadowed by Duane even in death. The bass position had been filled by excellent Lamar Williams and the then unknown Chuck Leavell came in to fill out the sound with piano and vocals.

The band was clearly back into it's element playing live. The sound is a bit "cooler" in the sense of being more precise, better technically and backing off if ever so slightly in passion. This hardly means WIPE THE WINDOWS CHECK THE OIL DOLLAR GAS is a bad record. To the contrary, it is very good. But if you are looking for another AT THE FILMORE EAST you are bound to be disappointed.

Since AT THE FILMORE EAST and EAT A PEACH (the last two albums with both Duane Allman), the band released the classic BROTHERS AND SISTERS. Frankly, many expected the band to dissolve with EAT A PEACH and not much was imagined for the succeeding album. BROTHERS AND SISTERS was a phenomenal record with a bucket load of great songs. Everyone had thought the Allmans had arisen from the ashes to take the lead in the contemporary rock vanguard. That was not to be. Thus fair or unfair, WIPE THE WINDOWS CHECK THE OIL DOLLAR GAS is often regarded as a document of the band's journey into disintegration. By the end of the decade, the band would release two albums that would stand as embarrassments to this day.

In part, this hardly was the Allmans fault. Time had simply past and musical tastes changed. No longer did the concert goers have much interest in the long jams that was something of a trademark for the Allmans. Most have songs here have been played at the five to seven minute range. The exceptions are the nine minute **Jessica** and a seventeen minute **In Memory of Elizabeth Reed**. In the "old days" at five, six or seven minutes the band would just be warming up.

As it stands, five of the ten songs are from BROTHERS AND SISTERS. One from EAT A PEACH. One from WIN, LOSE OR DRAW. One from IDLEWILD SOUTH. And two from the self-named THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND. The only song that had seen life in AT THE FILMORE EAST was "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed"--itself treated here to a nice touch by quoting the Doors' "Riders OnThe Storm" midway through. So one is hardly treated to an AT THE FILMORE EAST JUNIOR.

For my money, this album is worth every cent for a spirited "Ramblin' Man", the inspired different take of "Elizabeth Reed" and a rousing "Jessica". That being said, there really isn't a chunker here. All are among the best in the Allman's catalog. It is just that this is the lesser of all the band's live recordings. Much preferred are all the Allmans later live recordings such as AN EVENING WITH THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND (both volumes) and PEAKIN' AT THE BEACON.

Of course, I assume you already have AT THE FILMORE EAST. If not, what's the matter with you?

This was surprisingly entertaining and with a few minor exceptions, very inoffensive family fare. It's another one of those adults-and-kids-can-both-enjoy flicks with a number of lines that border on being too much for kids but are still tame for adults - close, but safe. There are also some funny special effects and some good slapstick humor.

Being basically a kids' film, the main child, played by Eric Lloyd is cute but a little too spoiled for me but he's tolerable, as is his brother. Jason Alexander is the father, a very likable subdued guy but a little too lenient.

The real surprise in this cast is Faye Dunaway. Usually playing hard-edged types, she is the opposite in here which is kind of refreshing to see. She shows a nice comedic touch. The chimpanzee is probably the most entertaining, which is the idea, but so is the villain played by Rupert Evert. In other words, there are a lot of likable characters in this movie.

This a "sleeper:" an underrated film that a lot of people would enjoy. I'm sorry it never got much "press."

Very Fun Movie, Cute boys and an orangutan have a special bond.
Full of laughs and a sweet bond with their father.
My 10 yr old son has this movie&absolutely loved it, so I purchased it for my friend's children for Christmas. They loved it too! My friend was glad to get a movie the whole family could enjoy.
I was suprised that I actually liked this. Ape Dunston! It is warm, fun, and slightly zany, and seems not to take itself too seriously which is a good thing to me.

Oh, and "Lord Rutledge" that is a great freakin' name!
High society gets a dose of monkey business in this family-friendly bit of simian slapstick. Less foul and more fun than Clyde from the Clint Eastwood comedies, Dunston is the practical-joking orangutan partner of foppish jewel thief Rupert Everett. Making his escape in a five-star New York hotel, Dunston lands in the protective care of 10-year-old Eric Lloyd, the high-spirited son of harried hotel manager Jason Alexander, and together they turn the snooty social event of the year into a zoo. Faye Dunaway is Alexander's overbearing boss just aching for a comic comeuppance, and Paul "Pee-wee Herman" Reubens dons a mauve tuxedo as Buck La Farge, animal-control specialist. Would you believe the monkey upstages them all? Though hardly the smartest comedy around, this is a cute, cuddly little barrel full of monkeyshines just made for the younger crowd. The "results" of this test kit will not tell you if you have mold growing on building materials in your house. It will only tell you if mold spores are in the air inside your house.

Guess what? They are.

Mold spores permeate outdoor and indoor environments.

The best way to tell if you have a mold problem is to inspect your house. If there is visible mold on drywall or other building materials (usually the result of a flood and/or high relative humidity levels in your home), then a professional should be called to develop a remediation plan for your house.

Sampling for mold is an unnecessary expense if you already have visible mold growth in your home. If you can see it, it's there. Have it removed under environmental controls by professionals.

Do not waste your money on crap like this.
The test is easy to do, but you do have to send off to have lab testing done on the dishes. The results did take awhile, but we received a detailed report with different kinds of mold present and not present in each room. This is very helpful as they even provide a list of general causes/locations that each kind of mold is found, which allows you to take steps on your own to try and resolve the problem.
The mold plates were easy to use and return to H Chek for analysis. I had trouble getting the reoport back because they miss-read my email address - probably my handwriting. The report is complete with all the different types of mold found listed - not just "mold".
The only reason that anyone would buy this product is to find out if they have a mold problem at home. Then you get charged an additional $39 for them to give you a "detailed" report of your problem.

Well, the subsequent report will not tell you to what extent your mold problem is. In fact, they won't even tell you IF it is a problem at all.

After they've taken all your money they say: "There are no standards for determining what is an acceptable, tolerable or normal quantity of mold".

Helloooo???? Why didn't you state that up front?

They go on to say: "No matter what type of mold is present, you should arrange for it's removal"

Helloooo???? I coulda saved $39 if you had been honest to begin with!

This book was nauseating to me. While I have empathy for the abuse the author endured as a child, I got the impression he was giving men an excuse for passivity. It degrades men by portraying them as helpless, pathetic victims of fear, emotional immaturity and sexual desire. Like so many self help books for marriage today, it tells women they have the power (relational superiority) to fix their marriage by "helping" their husbands to change by following their suggestions. At the same time the book contradicts itself by shaming women for attempting to "fix" their husbands and tells them they can't make him change.

This book supports the modern epidemic of disrespect for the male gender, which the author says he is fighting against, by being another manual on how to pamper or baby your husband. Further, the book adds insult to injury in presenting men as sexually needy and relationally incompetent which is a real sexual turnoff to women.

The constant instruction to "respect" your fearful, passive CNG (Christian nice guy) gets irritating after awhile because the book places the responsibility for "helping" him overcome his fear on the wife much like praising your toddler for overcoming his fear of the dark. Is it any wonder when a woman is focused on coddling her husband like a child that she looses respect for him? I would not recommend reading this book unless you are interested in mothering your mate.
Paul Coughlin, author of the catchy NO MORE CHRISTIAN NICE GUY, is back with his latest project, MARRIED BUT NOT ENGAGED. He has teamed up with his wife, Sandy, for the book, and together they tackle false guilt that women sometimes feel about connecting with their emotionally uninvolved husbands.

Written for both men and women, the book focuses on some of the underlying issues of marriage from the perspectives of both partners. It explores the three factors that contribute to a man's passivity as well as common roadblocks along the way to intimacy. In addition, it looks at the internal conflict that comes with trying to be a Christian Nice Guy, which the authors dub a "CNG."

They write, "He's fighting so many internal battles that when it comes to life with you, he seems to be going through the motions of marriage, consistently shut down or difficult to reach. As you'll see, he doesn't realize that his heart is required to create intimacy with you, with others and with God. He thinks following all the rules will sustain his relationships. He doesn't yet know that intimacy comes not from checking off a to-do list."

In response to such marital challenges, the Coughlins offer practical advice in various relationship areas. As far as communication goes, they encourage readers to express themselves honestly and vulnerably, but take time to listen with empathy. In addition, partners are encouraged to model optimism and look for grace. At the same time, partners can model assertiveness in their words and actions. This kind of assertiveness means sharing feelings and thoughts while still being respectful of your partner. The Couglins also prescribe real intimacy.

They write, "We often misconceive of intimacy by thinking of it as a single, isolated act, like a memorable conversation in a romantic restaurant or a pleasurable sexual experience in an attractive hotel room. But those are just stages on which intimacy might unfold. Intimacy isn't an event --- it's what happens during these events --- two people actively pursuing the other person's deepest being. It is speaking the language of the other person's soul. For example, many married couples have honeymoons, but not all honeymoons are intimate and soulful."

Overall, the book is filled with solid advice and insights. Along the way, there are a variety of letters from Christian Nice Guys and stories from those who have struggled with these issues. At times, the writing runs flat and sounds more like a rant or a radio show (which shouldn't be a surprise since Paul hosts a radio show on The Dove in Southern Oregon) than a well-written work, but the stories are enough to keep the reader moving forward.

MARRIED BUT NOT ENGAGED is a solid resource and should be recommended to anyone wanting to get a fresh perspective on relationships as well as strengthen their marriage. The timeless advice is useful to all kinds of couples.

This book focuses on the problems that can be caused in Christian marriages by men who are passive in their behaviour - who fail to conform to society's view of masculinity (which itself has been devalued over the last decades). The book looks at why some men are like this and ways in which both husband and wife can work with each other to improve matters. The book was easy to read; however I felt that much of the subject matter was probably far more prevalent in America and that some of the stated problems would be less of an issue within the British personality so it may not be as universal as the authors imagined.

This book isn't a ten step guide to overcoming the problems of men feeling weak and in fact I wasn't always sure that it offered much useful advice - it was good at identifying the problems but didn't offer that many concrete ways to resolve them. However it did offer some points for thought about communication between men and women and referenced many other books that might be helpful in addition.
In Married But Not Engaged, Paul Coughlin brings wife Sandy in to help offer encouragement to wives who struggle with jello-spined husbands. The tone of the book is positive throughout, with unique helps such as a "goodwill quiz" (p. 159) to help women get a new perspective on themselves, their husbands, and their marriages. The Coughlins have obviously struggled through the issues personally to come out on the other side with a new, positive view of each other and a rock-solid marriage. Married But Not Engaged will benefit all but the bitterest of wives and most degenerate of husbands. Even those can gain something from the book if they will apply the Coughlins' insights and techniques to their hearts and personal situations.
The book makes some good, what I call, "excuses" for men to just float through our lives, totally oblivious to all that is happening around them. This is a godsend for the men who have actually experienced the abuses and the other notable reasons for the man's behavior. However, it doesn't help those of us who are just married to spoiled men, and mama's boys. A good read, but be forewarned: the information given just tells women how to further shoulder the burden, but gracefully.

I used this book for two courses as a freshman at Princeton University. One of them was a seminar on politics of economic inequality, the other one - an introductory comparative politics course. This book provides a good introduction to explaining political outcomes in terms of socio-economic interests (as opposed to just culture or institutional arrangements). The argument of the book is fairly interesting and well-developed: the size of the welfare state depends highly on racial fractionalization of the population and political institutions (federalism, checks and balances, winner-take-all electoral system) which are the result of a historical interplay of socio-economic interests. The discussion of the historical context (e.g. the "entrepreneurial" use of racial hatred to fight against redistributive policies) and possible counterarguments are both well done. Furthermore, this book debunks some myths such as the notion that upward social mobility is higher in the US than in Europe.

However, it is not without its problems. It gets fairly dry and repetitive sometimes. The arguments themselves are not flawless either. Alesina and Glaeser imply that the reason for the large welfare state in Western Europe is the strength of the left and the labor movement, while in reality the welfare state in Western Europe was largely built by right-wing parties (the Consevatives in the UK, Gaullists in France and Christian Democrats in Germany). The attempt to argue in terms of "the right" and "the left" often backfires, too, since it is not always possible to clearly draw the line. Nevertheless, this is a solid and thought-provoking book.
Absolutely fascinating, very thorough discussion of the reasons why the US and Europe have such different approaches to social welfare policy. The presentation is systematic and extremely detailed, with data to support every point and reject competing hypotheses. It is compact and easy to read, though the writing style is a bit dry. I found the book very very useful, and I haven't encountered anything else that fills this intellectual niche so well.
In this this timely study of the different approaches of America and Europe to the problems of domestic inequality and poverty, the authors describe just how different the two continents are in the level of State engagement in the redistribution of income. They discuss various possible economic explanations for the difference, including different levels of pre-tax income, openness, and social mobility; they survey politico-historical differences such as the varying physical size of nations, their electoral and legal systems, and the character of their political parties, as well as their experiences of war; and they examine sociological explanations which include different attitudes to the poor and notions of social responsibility, as well as, most importantly, attitudes to race.

Christopher Trotter, The Scottish Kitchen (Aurum, 2004)

When one picks up a book with a title as authoritative, as definitive, as The Scottish Kitchen, one rather expects the pages between the covers to be authoritative and definitive, but also traditional. Trotter does, generally, keep to the mandate, though some of these recipes do veer off to the side and into cuisines that arrived on the coattails of immigrants over the years. That aside, the book is lavishly, and wonderfully, illustrated, and Trotter's comments are pointed and lively (too much so, sometimes; one wishes for an editor who'd mentioned that toning down one's use of exclamation points is usually a good thing). And, of course, there is a haggis recipe.

Lovely to look at, and fun to cook with. ***½
This book is an essential practical introduction to the best of Scottish cuisine, and its fresh, seasonal and flavoursome ingredients.

They are good shoes, mine came with faded spots on the toes. It looks like i spilled bleach on them or something but I use them for skating so it really doesn't matter. Maybe it was bad luck for me but they feel and fit great.
my shoes came to small they were a size 10.5 in a size 11 box and there was no way to return them. POOR SERVICE !!!

Not easy to use, not helpful, not a good product.
I just wanted a simple way to print checks. This product is confusing and needlessly complicated. It requires you install 2 programs just to print, does not allow "real" print previews (you can "mock up" something in the print design program). The only way I will be happy is if I manage a full refund. What a horriable dissapointment this program turned out to be.
My husband and I have been using home-printed checks for almost a decade. We find them to be far more economical than checks purchased through the bank. There are two separate parts here that need to be reviewed: the software and the actual checks.

The software is easy to use and does offer some nice features. In particular, I like the ability to add pictures to your checks.

I wasn't as impressed, however, with the actual check paper. The check book kits were a good idea and easy to use, but the paper is not perferated well enough. A high percentage of the checks ended up ripping as we were pulling them from the book. This was true no matter how slowly or how carefully you removed the.

All in all, I think I'm going to continue using the software, but I'll buy a different brand of check refills.

I got this chip set as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. He wanted a nice poker chip set so he could start having tourneys. Well when they arrived, all were accounted for, however the case was damaged on the bottom side. Not from delivery either the box was intact. It looks as if the assembly process went awry. I agree with the prior comment, the lock is very weak. I think its more for looks than anything. So if you don't really care too much about how the chips are stored, then this set is great. The case, however needs to be beefed up with that much weight.
All in all it's a great set of high quality chips. The weight is perfect and the chips are durable. Everyone at my Tourny's love these chips. It makes for easier game play when the denominations are on the chips. The set needs some upgrades in the end. I took one star away for the case, I've had it for a month and it is starting to seperate from the weight of the chips. That is not a good thing. Who wants to lug around 1000 loose chips? Not this guy. Also the lock is flimsy. The other star was from the cards, chip denomination&rule book. Both decks have delaminated in one use, crap cards. The chip denomination should have contained $10 chips instead of $1 chips, who uses $1 chips in a game? First blind increase and their useless. It would have been nice to see the $5000&$10,000 chips in the set. Instead I had to buy those seperately. Lastly, the rule book, crap. Not a useful piece of information in it, if you've ever played Poker before. Then again, I didn't buy the set for the book. If the case was better, I'd highly recommend the set, but it's not, so I won't.
