(Lori Laitman Triumphs in Third CD!) Becoming A Redwood reviewed by Gregory Berg in The Journal of Singing, May/June 2007
Here is yet another collection that confirms the greatness of song composer Lori Laitman. It is difficult to think of anyone before the public today who equals her exceptional gifts for embracing a poetic text and giving it new and deeper life through music. She has an unerring way of enhancing a text's beauty and meaning while not obscuring the text through artifice or excess. One also has to admire how deeply personal her songs are, and that depth of self-expression is surely one of the chief reasons why singers are drawn to her work and find her songs so gratifying to perform.
As with a previous Laitman collection reviewed in this column, this recording features very helpful liner notes written by the composer herself. Laitman gives background on the text at hand, and then manages to explain her setting of that text without getting too technical. She is especially careful to point out instances of word painting that otherwise might not be discerned. Full texts are included, which is a relief, since her singers do not always manage to articulate the texts with perfect clarity. The recording features an array of superb singers, most of whom are performing music that was composed for them and/or that they premiered. They are an accomplished group, as are the various instrumentalists who are part of this as well, and every performance seems to be of the highest standard.
Every work on this disk is worth having and hearing, but special praise must be reserved for Daughters, featuring texts of two writers touched by the Holocaust. Laitman notes that this is her first composition for vocal soloist and piano trio, and one hopes that she will return to this array of musicians again and again. It's a beautifully balanced work, and the colors of piano, violin and cello meld with Patricia Green's voice in all kinds of haunting ways. Long Pond Revisited is also exceptionally beautiful for the way it features baritone solo to the accompaniment of one cello. It's a gorgeous combination which we have heard before, but this particular piece capitalizes on the eloquence of the cello so ideally. Another especially effective song is "The Apple Orchard," which is impeccably crafted and coherent. "Equations of the Light" is a fascinating sort of duet in which two individuals have a chance encounter on the street, with their respective songs blending almost uneasily at first before eventually coming together in unison. The music then shifts again as they go their separate way s and we're left with a nagging sense of unresolved hopes. Throughout this disk, one can not help but be impressed at how well Laitman manages to set poignant texts of heartbreak and loss, and then in the very next song will write just as effectively in a more light-hearted vein.
Albany has done a great deal over the years with American music, and this release certainly rises to the high standards we have come to expect from them. It's inevitable that any American art-song composer will at some point be compared with Ned Rorem, as is done in this disc's booklet notes. It's a testament to the quality, melodic richness and subtlety of Lori Laitman's songs that for once the comparison is not inapt. The Albany label is clearly committed to the flautist-turned-composer, with this third disc following up two previous releases: "Mystery -- The Songs of Lori Laitman" in 2000 and "Dreaming" in 2003. I hadn't heard either but the current anthology, "Becoming a Redwood," is an extraordinarily impressive achievement.
The programme presents a variety of singers in five shortish cycles and a handful of individual settings. Early Snow offers three songs that display Laitman's gift for setting a mood with great economy and precise word-painting. "Last night the rain spoke to me" is lovely, Barber-like in its simple tonal melody. In the title-song Laitman distills the evocative scene and emotion most artfully. Jennifer Check is a sensitive advocate though her voice tends to turn shrill on top. In Daughters, Laitman's songs, setting poems by Anne Ranasinghe and Karen Gershon, are masterly, probing the requisite nostalgia and aching sense of loss. "Sheila Remembered" is particularly affecting with great depth of emotion, simply rendered. At nearly nine minutes, "A Letter to my Daughter" is the most extended song on the disc but Laitman sustains the structure masterfully, with a natural flow yet alert attention to the elliptical, shifting stanzas. Patricia Green's rich mezzo is well suited to these settings, and Laitman's inventive writing for the backing piano trio is on a similarly high level.
The Throwback, on varied poems by Paul Muldoon on the life cycle, benefits from the warm, incisive baritone and exemplary diction of William Sharp. The off-centre carousel feel of "The Ancestor" displays a quirky humour as striking as the deeper expression assayed in the other settings. In the cycle Becoming a Redwood soprano Barbara Quintiliani is a bit wobbly at times, though she is effective in the reflective moments, as with the beautifully floated vocalise at the coda of "Pentecost." The song that gives the disc its title is one of the finest here, with the piano postlude sensitively performed by the composer.
The Apple Orchard offers a gentle pastoralism, nicely etched by tenor Robert McPherson. "This Space Available" shows a more whimsical side, with a witty epigrammatic vocal line, as does the cabaret song Being Happy with its absurdist verse of social manners deftly delivered by baritone Lee Poulis. Written to poems of CGR Shepherd, Long Pond Revisited closely reflects the poems' loss, anger and acceptance, with obbligato cello adding to the burnished expressive depth, though the settings here are not quite as subtly varied in profile, dark and lovely as they are.
But this is a minor quibble in a disc that gives increasing evidence of a major talent; Lori Laitman's beautiful, sensitively crafted songs deserve to be performed widely, and much better known. Apart from some shrillness from the high female voices, the singers' inspired performances provide Laitman's music with all the advocacy it deserves. --Lawrence A Johnson I discovered the wonderfully melodic, highly original songs of Lori Laitman through her first album, "Mystery," and I later reviewed her second album, "Dreaming," for Amazon. I couldn't wait to hear what this gifted composer would produce next, and when "Becoming A Redwood" was released last fall, I got a copy and listened often. Ms. Laitman's genius shines through in each cycle, but her lyrical, emotional settings of poet Dana Gioia are my favorites, sung brilliantly by Barbara Quintiliani and Sari Gruber, Robert McPherson, and Lee Poulis. A glowing review by Lawrence A. Johnson in the March 2007 issue of Gramophone only confirmed my beliefs: "It's inevitable that any American art song composer will at some point be compared to Ned Rorem...It's a testament to the quality, melodic richness and subtlety of Laitman's songs that for once the comparison is not inapt...Becoming A Redwood is an extraordinarily impressive achievement...[It's] a disc that gives increasing evidence of a major talent; Lori Laitman's beautiful, sensitively crafted songs deserve to be performed widely and much better known...The singers' inspired performances provide Laitman's music with all the advocacy it deserves."

customer 's review (Oregon Scientific ST228 dead batteries) I recently purchased this ...and much to my surprise, it arrived with weak batteries, I never even got one salinity check. It did have batteries as the lcd display flashed numbers. I contacted Oregon Scientific and requested that they delivery more batteries; they would not. I expect to get some life out of a newly purchased product and I'd think that Oregon Scientific would either deliver a functioning product or say batteries needed. The ST228 Salinity Sensor is designed to easily help you take control of
your salt intake by quickly determining the salinity concentration of
liquidsat home or when dining out. Simply insert the sensors on the tip
of the Salinity Sensor into your soup, sauce, or beverage and know in
seconds the salt concentration it contains. Ideal for sodium watchers, this handheld salinity meter from Oregon Scientific is a quick and convenient way to stay on top of your salt intake. The meter is easy to read and simple to use. Just insert the sensor probe into a broth, soup, or sauce, and the display shows the salt percentage (.3 to 2 percent) within seconds. The meter also reads temperature in Fahrenheit, from -41 to 212 degrees. With automatic shutoff, a low-battery indicator, and a protective case, the meter is a good travel companion. The device runs on four long-life batteries and rinses clean with water and a mild detergent.--Emily Bedard

customer 's review (Great!) My allergist suggested that I buy one of these "peak flow meters" because I sometimes feel short of breath. This device measures how much wind you can blow out and lets you know where you are with your breathing. I found out that I breathe normally and most of the problem was in my head. So any time I am feeling short of breath, I can measure my breathing to find out what's up. I highly recommend this Peak Flow Meter for its design, compact self-carrying case and ease of use. For some reason,I could not get one at my local pharmacy, but they were right here on Amazon.com. The Personal Best Peak Flow Meter measures the peak expiratory flow in order to monitor chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD. Use of a Peak Flow meter monitord and measures how quickly an individual expels air from their lungs and, when done regularly, can help patients and doctors manage asthma and other respiratory ailments.

Usually ships in 24 hours In this systematic critique of the structural basis of U.S. media - arguably the first one ever published - Upton Sinclair writes that 'American journalism is a class institution serving the rich and spurning the poor'. Likening journalists to prostitutes, the title of the book refers to a chit that was issued to patrons of urban brothels of the era. Fueled by mounting disdain for newspapers run by business tycoons and conservative editors, Sinclair self-published "The Brass Check" in the years after "The Jungle" had made him a household name. Despite Sinclair's claim that this was his most important book, it was dismissed by critics and shunned by reviewers. Yet it sold over 150,000 copies and enjoyed numerous printings. A substantial introduction to this paperback edition by Robert W. McChesney and Ben Scott asserts the book's importance as a cornerstone critique of commercial journalism and a priceless resource for understanding the political turbulence of the Progressive Era. customer 's review (An entertaining tale of naval aviators)
(Great action, seriously under-worked story and characters)
(I must've lost the last 20 pages.)
(Realistic, interesting, informative...)
(No end in sight.) "Check Six!", the novel by Bob Norris, takes the reader into the world of a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. A note about the author inside the back cover states that Norris is a commander in the U.S. Navy and a veteran combat pilot. This story is told from the perspective of Jack Warner, "a journalist specializing in military affairs" who has reported on the notorious Tailhook scandal and its aftermath.
Warner lands a choice assignment: he is to cover the integration of two female pilots into a Hornet fighter squadron on board the U.S.S. _Ranger_. But early in the novel Jack is tipped off that the women may face a sexist conspiracy to keep them from achieving their mission.
"Check Six!" is an exciting, swiftly moving narrative that is really enjoyable to read. Yes, some characters and situations struck me as a bit corny or contrived, but overall it's an effective tale. Norris has taken the topics of women in the military and the relationship between the press and the military and integrated them into a solid action/suspense story.
Norris also offers the reader a colorful and well-detailed taste of life on board a naval vessel. Although I never served on a carrier, in my own naval career I spent some quality time on board a frigate at sea, and I can testify that at key points Norris' writing has an authentic salty sea taste. Check Six! shows us the power of the United States carrier and its aircraft with realistic descriptions of the ship and its functions. The reader is led through the story, never once, being given incorrect information about the inner workings of the modern Navy. The action is well described although short.
However, Check Six!'s few well-done parts are quickly overshadowed by it's faults. The unbelievable plot is too extreme to be taken seriously and unfolds as a terrible episode of JAG. The Libyan war crisis is under played by the scandal of male officers out to get their female aviator counterparts. The stereotypical, over-the-top, villians portray the Navy as a 'Brotherhood of Evil'. Imagining the men of the Navy would go to such extremes as they do in the book to intimidate their female comrades was just dumb. If there were supposed to be a mystery element to this book, this reader did not find it. All evil-doers are pointed out on arrival and make no effort to leave you guessing.
This is never counter-balanced by other good-willed Naval characters. It is instead rivaled by the most unexpected hero, a civilian reporter. It's turns into the civilian against the Navy of Evil as he investigates the scandal with superhuman perfection in all traits. If the villians were unbelievable, the heroes are no better. They are characterized with no faults, no fears, and are basically the 'best' at whatever it is they do. They are never challenged or stifled by their conflicts. They are loved by all but the bad guys. These heroes simply roll over whatever it is that is in their way and at the same time belittle the roles of those around them. For example, our female protagonist stands above all opposition, friend or foe, when in the cockpit. Sure there's a scandal against her but leave that to the reporter to outwit all parties involved. If these are good characters I don't want to see bad ones.
The story and characters have me wondering how a Naval officer could write such a book that made me think so negatively about his branch of the military. The reporter seems to be a know-it-all with the upper hand in every situation. From the narrative style it is written in the reader gets to see our reporters thoughts. Apparently, he's a bit of a spoiled snob.
We also get to meet a Navy veteran named Hoser (a symbol of the author perhaps?) who is perfect, period. He's in his fifties and can beat the (...) out of any one because he has somehow managed to maintain his six'something height and 250-pound muscle mass. His flying is flawless, and he nails every single one of his carrier landings. In other naval aviation fictions, and in reality, carrier landings are the most frightening experiences and most difficult tasks any pilot has to do regardless of experience. Here, its as easy as writing a bad novel.
Additionally, we've got our 'nugget', or rookie pilot. Through simulators and flying with Hoser a lot she has managed to become a better pilot than most of her fellow aviators. This also means mastering landings, and beating men with 19 years of carrier experience. I guess it doesn't matter how long you've been around, as long as you stick to that simulator and practice dogfighting with the God of the Sky you can become the stuff of legends.
Obviously I did not like Check Six! nor do I recommend it unless your looking for a quick look at the Navy's procedures and structures. Don't expect to see the Navy that does its job to protect America, that character isn't in this one. This Navy is full of cover-ups, hidden agendas, and laughable evil. I have no idea if parts of the Navy are this sinister but I choose to give it the advantage of being fiction. Hopefully, Bob Norris' next book won't be so poorly done. After all, he had 500 carrier landings and thousands of flight hours under his belt.
If you want a good aviation book check out Stephen Coonts' early books (Flight of the Intruder), or check out Punk's Wing by Ward Carrol who although new, writes a good read. If want want a techno-thriller with some plot to it go to Tom Clancy, he seems to have his head on straight most of the time. I have to agree that the flying scenes in this book are great. I can even get past the whole"Tailhook"thing, but I have a major problem with the ending. As some of the other reviewers have stated, the book just sort of peters out. There is a great build-up, likeable if slightly unbelieveable characters, and some terrific action. Then it all sort of fizzles out. I won't give away the plot of the book (others have already done that), but it almost seems like the ending was either re-written for whatever reason, or rushed to print. It just does not satisfy the reader. Too much is left dangling, too much left unfinished. I don't know, maybe this is just a lead-in to a sequel??? This was probably the best fictional account of Naval Aviation I have read. The plot was excellent, the characters were likeable, the book was terrific! Enjoy! One of the best 'page turners' I've read. The author has you immersed in the story before you know it. The story line is good, the plot is believable (for the most part), and the action is non-stop. However, you're left with an ending that is inadequate, at best. I don't understand why someone would go to such lengths to develop a plot, and then leave the reader wondering 'what happened ?'. The Enemy Below...Only the toughest pilots can fly the F/A-18 Hornet, the Navy's best fighter attack aircraft. Two of these fliers--women hand-picked by the Pentagon--are assigned to theUSS Rangerto break the gender line. Aboard ship, however, a covert cadre of officers will stop at nothing to keep the Navy "pure." Veteran investigative reporter Jack Warner is on deck to cover the story--while secretly working for top Naval brass to expose this deadly conspiracy. ...And Above But little does Warner--and the crew of Ranger--know that the danger has only begun. Mercenary MiG fliers, out to collect bounty for American blood, are about to launch a stealth attack. Trapped by the enemy, a squad of Hornet pilots on a routine training mission will need all the guts, skill, and luck they have to win this war...and come out alive. The New Topguns. The New Enemies. The New Navy. A thrilling new series that vividly takes you to the front lines of adventure! Rerations < Check Six! >
