Try explaining gorgeous transgenders to bug-eyed boys from back home where girls are girls and look like it.
Every page is loaded with the unexpected, and you'll find yourself shaking your head wondering why anyone would want to be a taxi driver. It does take a very special person!
The four and a half stars are only because of some of the rough language -- they live with it, but not everyone wants to read it. It's top notch laughter!

(A Helluva (Cab) Ride) 『This is not a book without its pleasures. Mr. Sager recreates the world of a San Francisco cab driver quite vividly. Though we never seem to get far from the inside of the cab, it's like we're actually riding along with him as he picks up and delivers a wide range of strange characters. There are a number of good laughs here and no one can deny the importance of that.
However, there are a few problems as well. I was never quite sure if I was supposed to take this as a memoir or a piece of fiction so I sometimes wasn't sure what to do with my emotions. In addition, though the scenes were often linked in some ways, this book lacked a unity that left me a little flat at the end.
I also have to admit that, as a Midwesterner and a traveler (though I've never been to San Francisco, yet), I found some of his comments directed towards my native soil a little insulting. Of course, I can take a joke and I understand his irritation with tourists (I've lived in NYC for nearly a decade now) but it goes back to the fact that I wasn't always sure what to do with my emotions. I didn't know when he was being serious or when he was really joking.
Still, anyone whose ever taken a cab in a big city is going to find things to laugh at here. Mr. Sager is quite talented. I look forward to seeing what he does in the future.』

(If you've ever taken a cab, read this book!) 『Witty, intriguing, and funny, Larry Sager has written a true, first hand look at cab driving using his own experiences in San Francisco. When starting the book, don't skip the introduction. Also, take a peek at the Glossary Of Terms at the end of the book, recommended before starting. It introduces cab terms (and others) in Sager's humoristic style.
Each chapter is a unique encounter with certain passengers. A 'Fare', in cabbie terms. Often smelly, angry, drunk, obnoxious, dangerous, partying, confused, ignorant, broke, in a hurry, talkative, snide, or occasionally happy, these are the people that cab drivers encounter daily. Larry Sager worked the night shift in San Francisco, exposed to the worst of the entire lot of locals and tourists. This book is a true study in human nature, mostly the bad side of it.
But despite his strange fares, Sager has kept his humor. Each chapter displays his wit as he tells his tales of humanity. My favorite chapters are The Cat Woman, Bambalone, Call Mom, Blood-No Guts, I Took A Bullet, Friends Like That, The Painter, And Madelyn Too, and A Smelly Guy.
You don't really think about what a cab driver endures until you read this book; poo on the seats, vomit, body odor, spit, insistent smokers, bad perfumes, and bad behavior in general. Plus it's a dangerous job.
The book is well written and well laid out; choosing to make chapters of each incident was brilliant. Some chapters are long and others short enough for one page. It breaks apart the stories quite well. Sager's fictional style of writing works extremely well in this true account tale. There's a great introduction at the beginning, and at the end is a modified map of Sager's territory along with a funny Glossary Of Terms. Overall, this is a highly entertaining book that will appeal to both fiction and non-fiction readers. I highly recommend it. Amateur sleuth Alex tries to find his uncle's killer in this charming cozy. In Alex's mind, no one is above suspicion in this murder, not even his own brother Tony. (Who killed Alex's uncle and why) 『Hatteras West Inn and Lighthouse is always a surprise to visitors. You usually don't see a lighthouse in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Alex Winston, Innkeeper, loves this place. His father had it built because his mother loved Cape Hatteras.
The Trask family checks in. Cynthia, her daughter Ashley and her son Steven are only here because it is the only way to hear Mr. Trask's will. But, Mr. Trask's lawyer, and Alex's uncle, Jase Winston is murdered and the will stolen before it could be read.
Alex calls his brother Tony. Tony comes to stay at the Inn for the memorial service. Alex and Tony don't get along too well.
In the midst of everything, Elise Danton's fiance moves to turn. Elise is the housekeeper at the Inn. Alex is very interested in Elise, but doesn't want to interfere since she's engaged.
As Alex starts looking into his uncle's murder, he begins to question everyone. Could one of the Trask family killed Jase. Who else had a motive to kill Jase? Alex discovers a lot of information and has to sift through everything to find the killer. In the meantime, many things start happening and Alex knows he's getting close.
This is a very enjoyable series. I love lighthouses and like the idea of a lighthouse inn near the mountains. The scenery is very inviting. I would love to stay at this Inn.
Alex is a wonderful character. Very likeable. He enjoys his work, but the downfalls are shown as well as the good times. Elise is somewhat of a mystery. She's described well enough, but to add to the story, Alex doesn't fully understand her. I think there is a lot there to be discovered in future books.
I love all the characters in the local town. They are very realistic.
I highly recommend this book and the whole series.』

What with demanding guests, financial difficulties, woman problems and a gathering of the Trask clan to read their father's last will and testament, Alex has his hands full.
His load becomes even heavier when his uncle, the Trask family lawyer who has been like a father to Alex, is found murdered in his law office. Who could have possibly wanted to bash in the head of the genial old eccentric? Tim's brother Tony, who was about to be written out of the uncle's will? Julie, a surprise Trask heir from the wrong side of the blanket? Perhaps the lawyer's secretary Nadine, the only one who can decipher the old man's handwriting. Or Vernum, the shy and shaggy gardener who hides from Tim's guests.
Tim Myers' Lighthouse mysteries are the coziest of the cozy, and Murder Checks Inn, the third in the series, is no exception. By now, the lighthouse setting has become familiar to readers, and no longer offers the surprises of book one, Innkeeping with Murder. Instead, Myers maintains interest by peppering the pages with suspicious characters, each with a more compelling motive than the last.
Cozy mystery readers are a forgiving breed. If the characters become a trifle homogenized and the solution a wee bit formulaeic, we don't care. Alex Winston is just such a gol-darned nice guy, and we really care about what happens to him and his charming inn. By the end of the story, Alex' life is heading in a satisfying direction and we look forward to what future books in the series have in store.』

A previous unknown but acknowledged daughter also is one of the beneficiaries of the will and she too is considered a suspect. There is one more questionable person that must be considered. Alex's brother Tony desperately needed the money that Jase left him in his will. Alex is determined to find out who is uncle's killer is even it means risking his own life.
MURDER CHECKS INN is so colorful that readers would like to take a vacation at the lighthouse motel depicted in the novel. The scenery is picturesque while the story line is fast light and entertaining. The support cast adds an extra touch of color to the tale. The protagonist is very likable and he knows all the suspects have viable motives, which makes him even more determined to find the real killer.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Excruciatingly Slow! A downgrade from previous versions.) 『I have been a Peachtree customer for over 17 years. I had not upgraded for a few years and felt this would be the time to do so. Some of the new features looked quite attractive. The first thing I noticed after insalling the multi-user version on my network is that they had changed the datbase from the Novell btrieve format to Pervasive SQL. I thought this would be good as I have usually noticed SQL databases run faster. Boy was I mistaken. The program ran so slow it was unusable. Different windows might take 30 seconds to pop up and another screen would take 20 seconds to save. The confusing thing was the behavior was not consistent it would run fast for a few transactions then revert to running slow. Peachtree technical support told me my server was not fast enough to handle the new version even though all my other software programs ran fine on the network. I should have been suspicious because Peachtree ran this slow even when I was the only one using the network. Nevertheless, I bought a new $3,600 Server and much to my dismay Peachtree ran just as slow. Then Peachtree Technical support claimed it was my network switch so I bought a newer one for $650. No improvement. I could see what was coming next. They claimed it was my workstations. I was about to upgrade the 3 bookkeeping computers anyway so I spent $1,950 each to buy very fast systems for the 3 of them. Still no change. I have searched around the Internet and found that I am not the only one to have these problems. It seems that the newest versions of Peachtree with the Pervasive SQL database where only designed to be run in Single user mode and not on a network. They built the network functions on later. I am very upset with Peachtree technical support for lying to me. If they would have told me the truth that there where some problems with the network abilities in the new version of Peachtree and that they were working on them, I would have saved thousands of dollars in new hardware that they claimed I needed. The last thing they told me was that I just needed to upgrade to Peachtree Quantum Accounting because it ran much faster. That would cost me thousands more. They must be kidding. I will never trust them again. My old version ran fine but they tell me there is now way to downgrade my data files. I am looking around for another brand of software now. If it can painlessly convert my Peachtree data I will switch.』 『Item #: 66781E.
