(Exciting series for Tween-agers that is ("gasp"), NOT about magic!) 『There are SO many novels for kids about sorcerers, witches, vampires and the like that books based around magic must be like a no-brainer fall back position for publishers. But there's hope! Try this Traces series of novels. My 14 year old son read them all in quick order and talked his 12 year old sister into trying them and she loves these books.
The stories take place in an alternate reality, same timeline as ours but a world where cats and dogs are endangered, technology is far more advanced and the police have robot partners.
The hero is a 16 year old forensic investigator and he has a robot sidekick and they are a crime solving team.
My son says he likes the books because there are good plot twists and humor throughout the book.

I've read nearly the whole book and was blown away with the wealth of great information it contains. It lays everything out in a way that's very easy to understand and follow. It covers everything from how to really eat to how to exercise in ways that will increase your lifespan and make it enjoyable. One of the greatest accomplishments of this book is making you grateful you read it, and excited to adopt lifetime health and fitness improvements.
One thing I should mention about this book: This is considered a school textbook, which is why it is so expensive (boo for price gouging). It is a fantastic book that everyone should read though, in my opinion. This is the 9th edition of the book, published in 2006. There is a 10th edition that came out in 2008, and an 11th edition coming out in January, 2010. My assumption is that the differences are minor, since the lessons the book covers are basic essentials to health and fitness, and I doubt they change every two years like the fad diets do. It seems more likely that the book is simply updated to reflect more current events as it shares examples from the media and current events (and probably to make more money for the author). Personally, I picked up this book for ten bucks used on e bay. It may be worth it to you to search around a bit before buying this at full price. Also, this book comes with a CD and nutrition/fitness log pages, plus every page in the book is perforated so they can be easily removed. If you're considering finding this used, make sure to pay attention to these specifics. I haven't used the CD, so I really can't comment on it either way.
Again, this is not a suggestion for a fad diet or workout. This book helps give you the tools to adopt a nutrition and fitness plan that is lifelong. I only wish I could have read this book when I was a teen; I'd be much healthier than I am today. Regardless, I will be much healthier from now on.』

(Daddy a Go Go is back on track!) 『After the disappointment of *Big Rock Rooster*, the third Daddy a Go Go album, I was hesitant to buy *Mojo a Go Go* when it was released. I was finally able to find a library copy to borrow, and was very happy to discover that Daddy a Go Go's fourth album is more on par with their first two releases (*Cool Songs for Cool Kids* and *Monkey in the Middle*, which my husband, 23 month-old son, and I love).
What other children's musicians mix surf guitar, Yiddish, and clever lyirics? Besides Ralph's World, not many! Memorable tracks on the CD include the Ramones-esqe "I Don't Wanna Go to School Today"; the Yiddish-smattered "Of Mice and Mensch"; covers of "Linus and Lucy" and "Snoopy vs. the Red Baron"; the pun-filled "Don't Blame the Weatherman"; and the rollicking "The Git Down Towns."
The only song we don't care for is the cheesey tweenish track, "Radio Dizzy" (which seems to have recycled the melody from the instrumental "Radio Wah Wah" on *Big Rock Rooster*). However, it's sure to appeal to older kids, with its references to tween pop culture.
Daddy a Go Go's surf guitar sound has an undertone of southern rock to it, so if you're not a fan of southern rock (as I am not), you may not care for John Boydston's brand of children's music. However, this CD has enough surf rock, creative and amusing lyrics, and cool instrumentals to make most parents and kids happy.
If you're interested in other children's musicians who rock, try Ralph's World (our favorite is the 2nd album, *At the Bottom of the Sea*); Brady Rymer (especially *I Found It!*); Yosi (*Under a Big Bright Yellow Umbrella*); They Might Be Giants (*No!* and *Here Come the ABCs*); and Elizabeth Mitchell (*You Are My Flower* and *You Are My Sunshine*, for a retro Sun Studios sound).』 『Certain music-critic cliches bear repeating, and in the case of Daddy a Go-Go, the one about audible fun--the idea that you can actually hear how much a band is enjoying making its music--applies.
