Well, the video is a huge disappointment and should be avoided. Done in 2004, the audio is over modulated and nearly unlistenable unless the volume is very low. However that may not be a big deal since David Parvin (the instructor) is not very good at conveying much necessary informative details that might be important to the viewers. I've watched this DVD over and over, hoping that I've missed something or that magically he'll be able to answer even the most basic of questions through the TV screen. I haven't - and he can't!
It's time to make an update on this video - I'd be glad to help shoot/produce it.
Until that happens, do what I'll do: Find a workshop in your area that's available so that you can actually learn something.』
($60 Could Have Been Better Spent) 『I bought both "How to Create an Artistic Face Casting" and "Casting the Female Torso" DVD's, and I have buyer's regret. I won't call them a rip-off, but they are overpriced. Each DVD could be condensed to about 4 minutes of information. The rest is fluff. The DVD's do not go beyond basics. How to do a full body cast, for instance, is not hinted at. Or how to cast a round body part, such as an arm. If both DVD's were combined into one and sold for $15, they would be a good deal. As it is, unless you're trying to spend money, you might do better with another video or a library book. I do wonder if the $30-dollar price tag isn't a result of small-press distribution costs and the makers of these videos aren't earnest in their desire to share what they know, but currently the videos are not informational enough to justify the cost. I've now spent $60 on both these videos to learn body casting and I'm really not much further along than I was before the videos.』

If you're very observant you may pick up a thing or two that may help you with your female torso castings.』

(still the hardest working man in pop music today....) 『i gotta admit, the legends newest album was surprising. the first two albums ('public radio' and 'up against the legends') were spot on imitation, er, odes, to early 80s british guitar bands. they were heavy on the studio effects, new order-esque guitar riffs, and moody atmosphere. they were also incredibly great albums. with three quality bands (acid house kings, club 8, and the legends), it'd be easy for johann to recycle ideas and get stagnant. that he never does is a testament to his songwriting chops.
on his new album, johann's trades his guitars prevelant on the legends' first two offering for keyboards and the resulting album, 'facts and figures,' sounds more like a club 8 record than a legends' record. it's almost an entirely synthesized album and had karolina's vocals appeared, it'd be easy to mistake it for a new club 8 album. for me, this is a beautiful thing as i've always had an affinity for synthesizers (all hail the mighty moog!). on 'facts and figures' johann channels early 80 synth bads like kraftwerk, gary number, depeche, and early OMD albums like 'organisation' and the eponymous l.p.
the songs are exactly what you'd expect them to be: infectious, bright (although there are several minor-chord masterpieces here, kids), well-executed and performed with a lot of vigor. he embellishes the songs with the exactly the right number of blips and bleeps. it's always interesting and never repetitive. i get the impression johann likes nothing better than to lock himself in the studio and pluck away and keyboards day and night. 'facts and figures' is full of great songs, namely 'play for today,' 'darling' (the most club 8-ish song of the lot), 'lucky star,' (no, not a cover of the madonna song), and 'another sunday,' (about the only song that smacks of 'public radio.').
if you're new to the johann angergard world, this is as good a place as any to start. although i have to warn you, once you've had a little johann, you're going to want a LOT more. there's perhaps no finer popsong writer than johann. 'facts and figures' is another feather in his cap.』

While I don't want to contradict these august individuals, I have to offer a caveat - this book is only helpful depending on your particular artistic style and skill level, so buyer certainly beware.
This book, which is tremendously thick, lays out Bridgman's understanding of the artistic rendering of the human form. Bridgman is very interested in the overall architectural structure of the body, and as such draws in a very geometric style based in blocking in the figure with shapes and, essentially, "carving" out those shapes to create the figure. The illustrations in this book are drawn in a sketchy, pen-and-ink style and, while some of his illustrations are helpful (his renderings of the legs and arms in particular), I have found very little that I've been able to learn from in this book, which is unfortunate. If your mind works on a more structural level, then this may just be the book for you. However, I'd recommend getting a better grasp on your anatomy first. Good books in that regard, geared towards the artist, include Burne Hogarth's legendary Dynamic Anatomy: Revised and Expanded Edition and David K. Rubens' briefer, but essential The Human Figure: An Anatomy for Artists. For those with an interest in comic books, Christopher Hart's Drawing Cutting Edge Anatomy: The Ultimate Reference for Comic Book Artists is useful as well.』
(A standard fugure dreawing book) 『I am largely self taught though I attend a weekly figure drawing group. I use figure drawing books in lieu of an drawing instructor. I find that Bridgman is referenced in most other figure drawing books that I have read.
I am happy that I now own what I consider the source of figure drawing books. The soft pencil drawings are elegant and rhythmic. The lack of detail in hands and faces is at once exemplary and frustrating. I want to see more detail but am shown, by his examples,that the suggestion is often the key to successful drawing.
I find the explanation of drawing some body parts, the human head, for example, to be impossible to understand. But I got the book for the number of elegant drawings on almost every page. The drawings are the reason why this remains a classic figure drawing book.』
(One of the standards) 『There's a multitude of anatomy books out there. This is one of the very best. Bridgeman looks at the human body like a machine with interlocking parts performing functions that contribute to the motion of the whole. If you're seriously studying drawing, this book can only help.

(WOW!) 『WOW! Just got this book and had no idea it was soooo good! If you're into the constructional way of drawing the human figure, this book is for you! The mechanics of the body are so clearly shown and with many illustrations - all pages in this book are filled with useful information.
So far I have been using those books by Gottfried Bammes, especially "Die Gestalt des Menchen" and I've considered that book to be the best of all my artistic anatomy books. This book by Bridgman comes very close to actually changing that and that's saying something!
If this constructional way of drawing seems confusing I'd suggest you start with "Figure drawing for all it's worth" by Andrew Loomis. That would give you the general idea. (I do believe there is an online version of that book somewhere) You could also start with "The drawing manual" by Glenn Vilppu I promise you that to construct a figure is the proper way to draw - at least that's how artists have been trained since the renaissance. Even when drawing from life you should still construct.
