Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Nice piece for your home) 『The cross is made of cherry wood; it is made in China but the quality and the finish are impeccable. The figure is made of resin, hand finished and made in Italy: you can obviously tell it is an industrial product but the overall quality is good enough, and the crucifix offers a great impression. I put the crucifix in my bedroom (taupe walls) it looks very nice... warm colors, great feelings.』 『The sculptured GENUINE Fontanini corpus figure affixed to a real cross of wood with a light gloss tone is a wonderful way to express devotion. The lovely symbol of art is a great representation of the Cucifix of Christ upon the cross. Add inspiration to any home decor.

Political correctness aside (one reviewer gave the entire 22 tracks 1 star due to what was perceived as "cruelty to animals" in one track - completely missing the point of the tune), this is the perfect disc to throw into the player when on long drives with children old enough to appreciate the humor and gleefully sing along.
The rest of the multi-page insert provides the lyrics to each tune, accompanied by suggestions for games, recommended books, and how to use the songs to broaden their literacy.
Highly recommended.』
(What a cute and fun musical delight!) 『My little 3 year old loved this CD especially the songs Tiny Tim and Katalina Magdalina. I heard him playing in his room the other day singing some of the words to a song from the CD then stopping to laugh and say, "That's funny!" The songs are delightful and full of cute lyrics kids love. The Grouch song Patricia Foster speaks negatively of is an old familiar song from Sesame Street sung by Oscar the Grouch. I remember it from my childhood days. The message in the song is don't be a grouch. My 3 year old thought it was silly and I used the song as a teachable moment. Life is full of those moments, use them!』
(Ruined by a lack of sensitivity about how children should treat live animals!!) 『I was enjoying this cd and looking forward to passing it along to my grandchildren, until I got to the "Grouch Song", which completely spoiled it all for me. It was a standard song about being grouchy, until the line: "If you can't stand a cuddly little kitten and you'd like to chase her up the nearest tree". I think a song that encourages small preschool children to chase kittens (if they think they are grouches) is very insensitive. I don't want children to hear this song and have them think it's okay to frighten a live animal. I have seen too much animal abuse to condone a song with a line like this, particularly since it's supposed to be an "educational" cd used with groups of children, and its main purpose is to nurture and encourage a good sense of humor! I am surprised that this line was included, since these are all original songs. It would have been much better if the line had been about a cuddly teddy bear, instead of a live animal. Bad judgment call- shame on you, Kimbo! Don't buy it!』 『Can You Make Me Laugh?... Humor is good for our bodies and good for our brains, and is such an important ingredient in the early childhood experience. The more we laugh, the more we learn, the happier we feel, and the healthier we stay. Dr. Pam Schiller has compiled this musical collection, and a comprehensive guide which features literature connections, lyrics and activities.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Like wine....) 『He gets better with age. who would have thought a small hyper guy with a raspy voice would turn into such a phenomena!! This was a Christmas present for my husband but to bad - it's mine now!! Buy it you will enjoy it!』 『This album presents highlights from the 4-disc boxed set, providing extraordinary insight into the studio work of one of rock's legendary figures and paints a picture of what might have been. Many of these performances are more stripped-down and intimate than their released counterparts, so the set becomes an illustration and a showcase of Rod's creative process.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Exeptional CD) 『John Waite is one of the most under-rated rock vocalist of our time. This release is John at his best. The band is tight, the songs are exeptional, consistent from start to finish. If you like sentimental, album rock, you will love this CD. This is far above anything he put out with the Babys. I have seen John in concert 2 times in the past few years and he just keeps geeting better.』
(Brilliant Release) 『Wonderfully crafted release.
Tracks: New York City Girl, Fly are exceptional.
The entire release is a terrific listen』
(Hidden Treasure) 『This CD is a gem. It is rare to be able to listen to a collection that is so consistent from start to finish. The songwriting, diversity, production and musical quality are of the highest caliber. Mr. Waite has blossomed into a mature and accomplished performer in many respects.』
(Waite's new album figures nicely into the landscape) 『Never a huge fan of the Babies or his trendy 80's pop shillings allowed me to let John Waite fall completely off of my music radar. But the maturation of his music and my own middle-age musings have brought him back. There's a consistency to this album that begs play from start to finish. Solid melodies with a straight-forward dimension showcase a tight support group of players and Waite's relatively smooth vocals. A good solid CD that will probably appeal to the late 30-something pop music fan. Fans of artist Jude Cole will either fear Waite's seeming mimic of"Start the Car"or just welcome the extension of the good music. Highlight: NYC Girl.』
(almost great) 『I let this cd pass when it came out a couple of months since I'm not a fan of John Waite's solo-work (too much pop-music to me). I don't even own most of his solo-records. But Figure in a Landscape reminds me of his work with The Babys and Bad English. Less bombastic than Bad English and more up-to-date sounding than The Babys. To me, this album ranks up with his best work: Head First (Babys) and both Bad English releases.』 『Should John Waite release an album calledNine Lives? After the Babys, "Missing You," Bad English, and even the theme fromAbout Last Night..., he could do it with a straight face.Figure in a Landscapefinds him occupied with a meld of sound and concerns that could be Del Amitri fronted by a chastened divorcee. Though obviously heartfelt songs like "Keys to Your Heart" and "Whenever You Come Around" won't hit you with surprises, they might connect depending on your own situation. What impresses is how good Waite's familiar voicesoundsin this stripped-down setting. With some luck, "Always Be Your Man" could even be a hit on those adult-contemporary stations that find room for the occasional acoustic-based, mid-tempo rocker. Waite doesn't have a masterpiece on his hands, but Rod Stewart would be proud to put his name on so much apparent truth at this stage of the game.--Rickey Wright』 『Figure In a Landscape, John Waite's (Babys&Bad English) solo debut for Gold Circle Records, represents a wonderful collection of material that John has written during the past few years with longtime collaborators like Anthony Krizan, Shayne Fontayne, Glen Burtnick and Will Jennings. From up-tempo rockers to heartfelt ballads, this enticing album has many moods.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (great tribute to baseball) 『All the Hall of Famers on this team certainly deserved to be there and it is great to see highlights from their illustrious careers. Also it was fitting that Pete Rose was included. I remember seeing the players get recognied before that All Star game. My only objection was the inclusion of active players. Some were only midway through their careers. It becomes an apples and oranges type of comparison and now in retrospect we my want to rethink how highly we should value the performances of all those players that used performance enhancing drugs.』
(Why not show the whole ceremony?) 『The DVD was not bad. The bios and stories were well done. The only reason that I bought the DVD was to watch the ceremony. I think that it was misleading that it did not state that the whole ceremony was not included. Again, not a bad DVD, but don't expect the ceremony.』
(A crock!) 『This DVD resembles a frivolous VH1 countdown rather than an important historical documentary and celebration of baseball's best. About 1/3rd of the players on the list are highlighted, essentially ignoring the rest. Possibly the greatest injustice is the exclusion of Barry Bonds from this list. Now the list was compiled prior to Mr. Bonds current aura of baseball invincibility but prior to the 1999 season he had won 3 MVP trophies (tied most in NL history at the time) and 8 gold gloves and was the only member of the 400/400 club. Clearly, he deserved to be included. Bottom line: Inexcusable. Do not waste your time on this DVD.』
(This coulda' been a contender) 『An opportunity lost. So much more could have been done with this, but was not. The entire DVD should have contained more details and more video of the beeter players. I was not impressed with parts of the documentary and do not recommend the expenditure for this rather short history of the games greats.』
(A wonderful panoramic baseball document) 『This is a DVD for everyone - for modern fans, for those nostaligic for a former age, for modern players, and for coaches.
The sheer quality of the historical film footage is what particularly fascinated me, far more than who failed to be included but who ought to have made it etc etc which I am sure will bug some people. I have a feeling that the average standard of professional baseball in the post-war years became much higher than that of the pre-war wars, hence the absence of .400 hitters - especially pitchers who hit .400!
Although some of the pre-war players were doubltess great talents the exagerated claim made on video such that Walter Johnson pitched faster than 100mph is just laughable. Just as the fisherman's fish get bigger with time it sounds like the speed of pitchers becomes faster as the years go by. Footage of Johnson pitching is nonetheless fascinating because his mechanics are just as how people remembered him: effortlessly smooth and fluent. But then it is also obvious that his mechanics lack the dynamism of a similar side armer, namely Randy Johnson, who follows through with more thorough weight transfers to the front foot and thus with a flatter back at follow through. That, combined with the fact that Randy is much taller and whippier than Walter can only mean that Walter Johnson cannot possibly be pitching faster than 100mph. However, it is obvious that Walter does have remarkably late shoulder rotation - something that makes a pitcher appear much faster than he actually is.
Nonetheless a student of the art of pitching could still learn a thing or two from studying the beautifully fluent text-book pitching mechanics of a Walter Johnson, or a Lefty Grove. If that were not enough the superb color pictures of Sandy Koufax pitching are a wonder to behold. I couldn't help but put on the slow motion replay to study him over and over. His mechanics have always struck me as being perfection itself and the footage quoted here only reinforces this.
On the other hand Warren Spahn's pitching mechanics are by modern standards thoroughly Baroque. Gross leaning backwards used to be common fault amongst an older gneration of pitchers such as Bob Feller and Johnny Vander Meer, but Spahn outdoes them all with a degree of leaning backwards that would make a modern pitching coach go pale. It's a small wonder he doesn't fall over backwards and even more of wonder that he was able to maintain control of his pitches with mechanics like that.
Although being a pitcher myself it is harder to comment on hitting mechanics it is obvious that Ty Cobb's hitting mechanics are equally bizzare starting with the hands apart on the bat followed by a ridiculously large 'hitch' in which he almosts touches the home plate with the tip of his bat before lifting it up to start his swing. On the other hand seeing Ted Williams (in beautiful color) swing the bat is a joy to behold as a model of perfection. You can see how hitters in opposing teams used to come out just to watch and learn from him when he was at bat.』
『In 1999, 2 million people around the world voted to name the best baseball players of the 20th century. Preceding the All-Star Game in Fenway Park in July 1999, the All-Century Team took center stage in a rousing ceremony. Among the legends stood Bob Gibson, Mike Schmidt, Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson, and Mark McGwire. Never before or after has so much talent gathered in one place, turning Fenway into a "veritable field of dreams." Narrated by Bob Costas,The All-Century Teamvideo is a touching tribute to the many talented individuals who made baseball the sport it is today. Costas takes us through each position, giving us the background and achievements of the selected elite. Historical accounts paint a picture of the competitors of yesteryear, including Honus Wagner, who batted over .300 for 16 straight seasons--when the league average was .248. Or Sandy Koufax, who started in eight World Series games, finishing with an ERA below one. Other honorable mentions go to Walter Johnson, whose slingshot sidearm motion redefined power pitching, causing one peer to state, "You can't hit what you can't see." Interviews with former players and colleagues flesh out the stories behind these heroic icons, as does vintage game footage that reminds us how talented these men were. By exploring the lives of the greatest players, this video teaches us that baseball is not about one man, but about many legendary players whose remarkable achievements tell the story of the game. It will be interesting to see who makes the All-Century Team for the 21st century.--Jeremy Storey』 『Statistics don't lie. And when it comes to the MLB All-Century Team DVD, you're getting a scorecard full.

Unforgettable players like Ruth, DiMaggio, Aaron and Mays -- just to name a few. Also covered are the thrilling All Century Celebrations at the All-Star Game and The World Series.
When it comes down to evaluating the All-Century DVD as a prospect, you'll have no choice but to go by the numbers. It's definitely a #1 pick.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Not Bad) 『Not to repeat too much from other reviews, this is a competent Return of the Jedi Princess Leia outfit. Obviously the quality of the outfit isn't that great---a lot of cheap rubber parts, but you get what you pay for. My girlfriend ended up buying some other accessories to complete the outfit and looked great with this! If you want a perfect Princess Leia outfit you'd be better off buying separate materials and working on them a few months ahead of Halloween. But if you don't have the time to spend doing it yourself, this outfit will definitely do.』
(The answer to geeks fantasies...) 『As a huge star wars fan, and married to Star wars geek, I have been looking for a costume like this. Perfect price range (yeah you can have a better one for $100s)for something you only wear a few times. It was a halloween costume, and really it got rave reviews. The only problems I had: 1) it isn't great material, the skirt fabric was, but the top and the "metal" parts were pretty shotty workmanship. and 2) the hair peices were unable to be used since they were put in the package wrinkled and there was no way for me to uncrimp them. and 3) the bikini top annoyed the heck out of me, it poked out from the fabric itself and looked cruddy, I had received it hours before my party, and only had hot glue to fix it, and it didn't last :( Like I said, great for a fast, noticable, base costume (if you can spend the time to fix the annoying parts) but I wouldn't wear it again next year』
(Seriously?) 『How did Star Wars sign off on this?
I am a tiny girl, so I ordered a small. I was amazingly excited to open the package. Here's what I saw:
The top is made of foam and rubber. The rubber "gold" bits don't stick on to the foam, so if you are going to wear this you have to sew/glue it back together. The foam pads are way bigger than in the picture. The "gold" design is different than the picture.
The skirt is pretty, but the "gold" thing on the skirt is horrid. Not only does it not stick to the skirt, it is wrinkled. Maybe it's heat, but either they shouldn't package it this way, or make it from better materials. The skirt covers more than the picture depicts, but that is an easy fix and not so bad.
The "jewelry" ... The description says rubber, or something like that. They don't tell you it's flimsy rubber that sags and droops. There's no way the girl in the picture is wearing the armband in this costume.
Minor issues: the chain on the choker is different. Skirt is different color (says it might be in description, but they really should show the other color if that is what they are selling). Skirt covers more than picture.
Major issues: top looks horrible. Foam and rubber that could not possibly fit the way it does in the picture. Gold on skirt is terrible.
So by my calculations, its the top, the skirt, the arm band and the choker that are different from the picture. Isn't that what they are selling? False advertising, at it's worst.』
(princess leia slave costume) 『as the description says, the picture shown does not accurately depict what you will be receiving. the accessories are cheap and flimsy as well as all the plastic (or whatever it is) 'gold' detailing. my biggest complaint is the top. not only is it different than the picture but it is way bigger than the measurements given. i wanted a small and it might as well be a large. i am very disappointed that i spent 50 bucks on this only to have to go to jo-ann fabrics and buy fabric and ribbon and such to re-design it for more money. a word of advice, don't get this costume, not without seeing it ahead of time.』
(You are not buying what you see in the picture. (is that legal?)) 『What they advertise you get...is not what you get.Star Wars Princess Leia Slave Adult Costume - Adult Costumes
1: Picture shows chain bra straps - what you get is cloth 2: Color shows as brown top and skirt - what you get is a gray top and purple bottoms 3: Collar shows pretty, small linked chain. - what you get looks like something you would see hanging from a chandelier. 4: Headpiece - I don't even know how they got away with this one. They show a little adornment in models braid. What you get is 2 head-combs attached to flimsy plastic that I can't figure out how to wear. 5: I received a arm band which wasn't said to be part of the included items, but it is plastic - so don't expect what the model is wearing.
The size was accurate, I ordered a medium.
I do not understand how this "Star Wars" trademarked product can be displayed one way and then is obviously not what is received.
Due to all of this, I would say $35, not $53 would have been a more accurate price.』 『Includes: Top, briefs with skirt, belt, choker, arm band, hair clips, and headpiece. Earrings and shoes not included. This is an officially licensed Star Wars TM costume.』

(Cool Transformer but could be constructed better) 『This is definitely a nice robot with nice sound effects. The only problem is that while transforming Megatron into a tank the black tab on one side does not lock into its socket. We returned the first toy for another but the second has the same problem. I am going to take a Dremel to the joint that causing the problem and see if that corrects the problem.』
(Transformers are fun for adults too!) 『This was a gift for my fiance and he was very happy with Megatron. He added this transformer to his collection.』
(MegaFun) 『My son loved this toy, and its complexity stimulate the learn and the creativity. On the "transformation" feature, at the other hand, the "locks" and "fits" could be a little hard some times, but overall, it's a nice big robot.』
(Great looking Megatron model!) 『So I bought both this and the Optimus Prime figures. Both are fantastic looking and both are potentially a bit of a pain to transform, particularly if you're in the recommended age group....5 year olds would definitely have some trouble here.
But the Megatron figure is significantly easier to transform than Optimus. I will give it that. There are a few things that annoy me, though. Some of the parts just don't feel quite as solid as I might like. For example, the legs are supposed to snap into the body, but mine did not snap so tightly and kept popping out with the slightest touch. Also, the legs and arms don't have enough articulation to make them easily posable, particularly compared to Optimus Prime which is quite strong in that suit.
The good, however, easily outweighs any annoyances on this figure. Megatron looks great in both modes and the cannon feature is great. I also really like the voice they gave him. Very menacing. It's a very well made toy and an impressive piece of engineering. Recommended for everyone!』 『Rebuilt with parts cannibalized from other DECEPTICONS, MEGATRON rises once again to lead his army. (Extremely Difficult to Use) 『My 7 year old son wanted the Ben 10 Omnitrix for weeks, and he finally saved up enough money to buy it. When the package came a week later, he ripped open the box, but was disappointed to see the packaging. It literally took us 15 minutes to get the plastic packaging open. When we finally got it open, to our relief, the batteries were already inside, but the on-off switch was small and fragile. When I tried to put an alien figure on, I found the figures were very hard to connect. When I gave it to my son to try, he was very frustrated and could not get it on. When I tried again later to see how the toy worked, the voice was very hard to understand and it did not say the correct alien name. The watch also does not stay on your wrist. My son was very disappointed with this. I do not recommend this toy.』
(My 4-y/o Loves this toy!) 『My 4-year-old son received this toy from Santa this Christmas. He's had if for almost a month, and is still enjoying it. He is a big fan of Ben 10. I'm not an expert, but I believe this toy comes with all of Ben's figures that he can transform into. They clip into the "watch" (it is NOT an actual watch), and the toy lights up and makes noises and each character says something different. In actuality, my son just likes to play with the wrist band itself, doesn't bother much with the figures. I think he'll figure them out later, which is also a plus, because then he'll be enthused about it all over again. And honestly, I am very impressed with any toy that holds a 4-year-old's attention past one week. This is a great toy, seems very durable, and I and very happy with this purchase.』
(Fun and interactive toy) 『Awesome toy! My 6 year old loves it! My son brought this to school and was the envy of all the boys, they each took turns and tried it out. Even the girls were interested and wanted to see how it worked. It was exactly what he thought. The pieces were easy to interchange. Plus, all the alien forces came with, no additional pieces to purchase.』

It provides fun math insights, highlighting the beauty and significance of numbers, and offering both novices and professionals arithmetic entertainment at its best. Many a high school to college-level library will find a winner here - but general-interest lending libraries will also find it a fun, different pick. 』
(A Wonderfully Amazing&Fascinating Study) 『Authors Posamentier&Lehmann have compiled an entertaining&engaging book sure to amaze anyone about the crazy nuances in the study of mathematics. Even if math isn't your strong suit, you'll enjoy this wonderful guide; in fact, it's probably more enjoyable for the mathematically challenged individual (such as me), because it demonstrates how fun numbers can be, if we just give them the chance.
I loved it. For anyone looking to expand their knowledge on the often perplexing world of mathematics, pick up this gem; you'll feel much more comfortable with a once intimidating subject, and realize that it's not all that hard to have fun with those mind boggling numerical equations.』
(Amazing - Surprising) 『"Philosophy is written in this greatest book constantly open before our eyes.......... It is written in the language of mathematics and the characters are triangles, circles and other geometric figures........." wrote Galileo. With "Mathematical Amazements and Surprises" (their latest work), the authors may not decipher such language for the reader, nor translate it into English , but they certainly prove that the language of mathematics does exist. The book consists of 5 chapters which are titled: "Number Properties and Relationships" "Arithmetic Entertainments and Novelties", "Arithmetic Loops", "Geometry Surprises" and "Mathematical Nuggets: Amazing, but True!". The chapters are followed by an afterward by Nobel Laureate H.A. Hauptman. It also includes an appendix that lists "Triangular, Square and Cubic Numbers". Particularly interesting to me was the chapter on arithmetic loops. By following certain paths and by making the necessary calculations, we end up into loops the validity of which the most skeptical mind will not be able to deny. Anybody who believes that there is more to our universe than what the five senses (or even the average mind) can recognize, will enjoy the subjects discussed. A beautiful piece of work . It is not often that a book delivers so convincingly the promise in the title. _____________________________ For the nit-picking, this is another book by Alfred S. Posamentier and Ingmar Lehmann, authors of "The (Fabulous) Fibonacci Numbers". Such book was criticized by some of the Amazon.com reviewers for containing inaccuracies. I do not know if this one also does, as I am not a mathematician and did not linger on the detail. But, whether or not there are inaccuracies here as well, the message is what matters most, just like it was the case for the previous work. Such message is conveyed in as clear a manner as can be done. 』 『What are the odds of finding two people who share the same birth date in a room of thirty-five? Most people would guess they're pretty low. In actuality, the probability is better than 80 percent. This is just one of many entertaining examples of mathematical curiosities presented in this book. If you have been waiting for a book that will evoke the delight and intrigue that mathematics has to offer, this is the book for you. Mathematics educators Alfred S Posamentier and Ingmar Lehmann have created the perfect introduction to the wonders of mathematics for the general reader, requiring only a high school background in the subject. Among the entertaining and useful tricks they teach are shortcuts in arithmetic, such as ways to determine at a glance the exact divisors of any given number. They also demonstrate how the properties of certain numbers can lead to infinite loops. What is particularly exciting is how many correct answers turn out to be counterintuitive. Exploring all these features will instill insights into the nature of numbers, improve your ability to manipulate them, and give you an appreciation for the inherent elegance of mathematics. Posamentier and Lehmann evoke the beauty of mathematics through the visual aspect of geometry. Enjoy with them the riches of the aesthetic and surprising properties to be found in triangles, quadrilaterals, and circles. As you marvel at the many unusual relationships and novelties revealed in this ingenious and delightful presentation, you will be learning more maths than you ever thought possible - and will be relishing every moment of it!』

(A very balanced book on the historical Jesus) 『Sanders has written a compelling and balanced view on the historical Jesus. His conclusion that Jesus was arrested for threats against the Temple (which he didn't make) and an explanation of the High Priest's behavior in light of the testimony being thrown out at Jesus' trial is compelling. It supports and makes sense of the gospel accounts. Sanders sees Jesus as someone who believes his actions will usher in the kindgom of God and perhaps died disappointed at the end. While I think Sanders misses the significance of the Son of Man reference in Daniel and what that meant to the Jewish community of the first century and fails to consider Jesus' view of himself as the suffering servant, I think this book is excellent, overall.』
(Sanders' Jesus) 『Scholarly assessments of early Christianity continue, unabated-- llustrating, if nothing else, the perennial allure of Jesus and His first century followers. One of the most highly-acclaimed contemporary scholars, E.P. Sanders, now a professor at Duke University, set forth his views in The Historical Figure of Jesus (New York: Penguin Press, c. 1993). "The aim of this book," he says, "is to lay out, as clearly as possible, what we can know, using the standard methods of historical research, and to distinguish this from inferences, labeling them clearly as such" (p. 5). Unlike some totally skeptical scholars, who insist we can know nothing about the Jesus of history, Sanders counters we can know a little bit. He announced basically the same ten years ago in Jesus and Judaism (Philadelphia: Fortress Press, c. 1985), where he admitted: "We seem to have reached an impasse in New Testament studies, in which work on Jesus can never be pronounced much more than 'interesting': occasionally provocative, challenging or even illuminating, but usually only 'interesting'. I have attempted to make at least a small hole in the barrier, and to rest the main themes of the study on unassailable data" (p. 321). After 280 pages devoted to the task, in The Historical Figure of Jesus, he sums up what he things we can know about Jesus, the allegedly unassailable data. "We know that he started under John the Baptist, that he had disciples, that he expected the 'kingdom', that he went from Galilee to Jerusalem, that he did something hostile against the Temple, and that he was tried and crucified. Finally we know that after his death his followers experienced what they described as the 'resurrection': the appearance of a living but transformed person who had actually died" (p. 280). This list of knowable data hasn't changed much, in Sanders' judgment, in the past decade. That's it! That's all we can know says Sanders. The rest of the NT, the vignettes and details, the Sermon on the Mount and the dramatic con¬frontations, when subjected to the critical eye of Sanders' "historical research," float away in the dissolving mist of faith and fantasy as the sun of enlightenment dawns. They provide little trustworthy documentation, he thinks, because "the gospels in the New Testament, are, from the point ofview of the historian, tainted by the fact that they were written by people who intended to glorify their hero" (HFJ, p. 3). What must be questioned, from the beginning, is Sanders' definition of "standard methods of historical research" which allows for so little knowledge of the past. If we diligently scour away from the historical record all accounts which "glorify their hero," what are we to do with most all that Plato tells us about Socrates, what Schlesinger says about JFK, the details Muggeridge gives concerning Mother Teresa of Calcutta? If we're to delete the documents written by admirers, what about critics? Are they not equally untrustworthy? Then how about the disinterested observers---are they not likely to overlook important details? (One of the things which struck me most strongly, coming to biblical studies after doing graduate work in history, was this: biblical scholars appear to be intensely committed, devoting themselves to intricate etymological excursions and meticulous analysis, and display enormous erudition when dealing with a text they largely disbelieve! It's like a fraternity of physicists still studying the "ether" they know doesn't exist but find fascinating insofar as it once elicited commitment from the scientific community.) Sanders discounts, consequently, most everything found in Christian sources. If statements in the gospels agree, that means they were copied and are non-trustworthy. If they slightly differ, they're labeled "contradictions" or "discrepancies" and rejected (though I was taught that historians judge slightly different accounts as the best vali¬dation of truthful testimony). Indeed, in Jesus and Judaism, he wrote: "material which can be accounted for neither as traditional Jewish material nor as later church material can be safely attributed to Jesus" (p. 16). Reading this book, one wonders if any collection of documents could satisfy the critical mind of its author. For instance, Sanders grants that Jesus' first disciples were probably Galilean fishermen, though he doubts Luke's account of their calling, which says Jesus gained their confidence by telling them where to catch fish. Such couldn't have happened, he says, presumably because it's impossible to know when and where fish will bite! So to explain how Jesus recruited disciples Luke just "supplied one; that is, he made up a story" (HFJ, p. 120). Given Sanders' "low christology," necessarily portraying Jesus as merely man, he cuts out those passages which hint at the incarnate God-man. So too with miracles. It's obvious that reputed miracles dot the pages of the NT. But we need not, Sanders says, believe any actually happened, for the ancient world was full of naive and ignorant folks who explained the mysterious and unknown by invoking miracles. Lots of events were judged miraculous and miracle-workers abounded, so Jesus was hardly unique. A few clear-headed intellectuals, such as Cicero, insisted "there are no miracles," since by definition they are impossible. Cicero's view has triumphed in the modern world, Sanders says, insisting "I fully share it" (HFJ, p. 143). Unlike Cicero and Sanders, Jesus himself was imprisoned in the ignorance of his milieu and seemed to believe in miracles, but he was simply mistaken! Jesus clearly spoke much about the "kingdom." Though Sanders devotes three chapters to the theme, he declares: "It is typical of the material about Jesus that his precise meaning is uncertain even on this topic" (HFJ, p. 200). In Sanders' judgment, the kingdom Jesus announced was an other-worldly reality of ethical perfectionism, though He died expecting it to be somehow realized in His lifetime. Here too he says little not contained in his earlier work, where he devoted five chapters of to the theme, exploring the intricacies of exegesis and speculation, indicating why he rejects most everyone else's understanding of "kingdom." This points out another tendency which distinguishes biblical scholarship. Much that's discussed in works like Sanders' deals with other scholars' theories. To discuss a subject such as "kingdom," Sanders must show why Schweitzer, Bultmann, Dodd, et al. were wrong. Almost always they will be treated respectfully, acclaimed for their acumen in disproving earlier scholars' views, but then discarded for failing to rightly read the text in the context of ancient Judaism. Sanders, of course, assumes he's finally found the truth--though some of us suspect he's probably as misled as those he rejects. Turning to the opposition Jesus faced, Sanders finds it overstated in the NT. The kinds of things Jesus said and did, he says, would not have elicited much opposition, so there's no reason to believe the documents' testimony. So after the crucifixion, his followers magnified the conflicts and controversies of his time in Galilee so as to justify their cause. (I guess we need to re-write Cherokee history--my specialty--to conform to Sanders' methodo¬logy: it must have been after the removal in 1838, when they were determined to prove race-prejudice in Georgia, that pro-Cherokee writers pumped up the story of missionary David Worcester going to prison for defending Cherokee rights.) Clearly Christ was crucified under Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem, since he represented Rome for a decade, but Sanders thinks that to Pilate (unlike the NT record, with its dramatic reference to his wife's dream and his own uncertainties) it was just one of many executions carried out at the time. Intent on evangelizing the Gentile world, Christians later transformed Pilate into a more suitable figure for their purposes. As Sanders wrote, in Jesus and Judaism, "The Gospels are all influenced by the desire to incriminate the Jews and exculpate the Romans" (p. 298). However much one disagrees with Sanders, as I clearly do, one learns a great deal by reading The Historical Figure of Jesus as well as Jesus and Judaism. To understand Jesus' milieu, his books provide much information. Sanders does fine work setting the stage for a Jewish movement in Palestine. In fact, his discussions of these non-NT sources are, in my view, the main value of these two books. Questions of chronology and Roman representatives are carefully treated. He also brings into his discussion most everything academicians have written in this century, providing an impressive display of learning--references to Jeremias, Schweitzer, and Bultmann abound. (What one doesn't find, however, is any allowance for more traditional--though equally scholarly--views such as those found in Karl Adam's The Son of God and The Christ of Faith). Though Sanders asserts that his conclusions rest on dispassionate research, I suspect this book, like so many of its genre, tells us more about its author (and the highly competitive scholarly guild he represents) than the focus of its study. In Jesus and Judaism, Sanders yoked various other scholars' theories to their theological stance, showing how they found NT data to support their doctrines. Then he admitted that readers "may well wonder how well 'my' Jesus squares with my theological heritage. I can explain simply: I am a liberal, modern, secularized Protestant, brought up in a church dominated by low christology and the social gospel. I am proud of the things that that religious tradition stands for" (p. 334). Though he thinks otherwise, it seems to me his portrait of Jesus is about what one would expect from one of his admitted theological stance. So, to evaluate his work, it's clearly not traditionally Christian. As a contemporary philosopher, C. Stephen Evans, insists, "From the traditional Christian perspective, the historical narrative in the New Testament is not 'mere' history, but it is fully history. The Christian rejects the divorce of fact and value, the real and the good, that is so characteristic of modernity." Like Ernst Troeltsch, Sanders assumes all historical knowledge is provisional, much like the events we experience, and explainable on purely natural cause-effect bases. Intent on making history like natural science, seeking, as Richard Weaver says, "what is presently true because uniformly true, of what is abstractly true because generally true," such thinkers fail to recognize that history "is the memory of all the past with all its uniquenesses, as they were expressed in the concrete matter which is creation." Such assumptions, of course, ban miracles from history. The Supernatural may be allowed room in the realm of "faith," but not in the solid reality of history! If the modern historian has never seen a miracle, thousands of past witnesses will not persuade him they occur. What must be challenged, as Evans notes, is this notion of "history." If God exists and acts in time, miracles may in fact occur! If God became man in Christ, a Grand Miracle in fact occurred! Historians are called to tell the story of what happened, not what they assume could or could not have happened. What happened in history, unlike repeatable events in scientific laboratories, took place as a sequence of unique, unrepeatable events. There is, quite simply, no rational reason to exclude, as Sanders does, the possibility of miracles or the Incarnation or Resurrection from history.
』
(Consummate Historian's Take on Jesus) 『E.P. Sanders, a very professional and judicious scholar, provides here the best, short volume on a historical appraisal of Jesus. The book was published in 1993, though the research holds up remarkably well.
He doesn't start out with any prejudices; rather, he uses his formidable historical knowledge, skill, and writing to follow the evidence. He may very well be the best person to do this in the English-speaking world today.
He never strains to make the dots connect or come up with something novel. Novelty for the sake of novelty--making Jesus a bohemian hippie, Mediterranean cynic, or a skeptic--is not his intention. He has to deal with 200 years of searching for the history of Jesus, and people's intimacy with the primary sources; even, their desire to know his inmost thoughts. The job is certainly a very difficult one.
He states his cards with full clarity on page 5--"The aim of this book is to lay out, as clearly as possible, what we can know [about Jesus], using the standard methods of historical research, and to distinguish from inferences, labeling them clearly as such"--and goes from there. He does, however, admit as an historian he subjects "the gospels" to "rough handling" for a believer. To wit, "The historian selects, but on different principles [unlike "the politician, novelist or moralist"]: what can be proved, what disproved, what lies in between?" (8)
He also acknowledges that "Matthew and Luke...would not have appreciated having Jesus' teaching separated from their own theological conviction that God sent him to save the world." Most people want to be seen agreeing with Jesus, which is understandable. It is "the professional obligation" of the historian, however, "to subject sources to rigorous cross-examination," Sanders writes on page 8.
He is certainly not hesitant to do so.
The result is judicious, albeit one often at odds with traditional Christian belief.
For example, the discussion of Pontius Pilate in the Gospels is devastatingly shown to be obscurantism. Matthew and John present a Pilate goaded by a feckless, blood-thirsty Jewish mob into crucifying Jesus. Even Pilate's wife, aided by a dream, counsels tenderness. What nonsense!
Using the written evidence of non-Gospel resources--in this case Philo and Josephus, who understandably is the main source for much of his history--to clearly make the case that Pilate was the Hannibal Lector of the Roman world, we discover something new. This Pontius Pilate psychopath wasn't in the practice of hemming and hawing over torture and execution, which he probably did with less thought than I do in purchasing dental floss. In fact he was recalled for excessive brutality by a very brutal regime--Pilate's "reluctance and weakness of will are best explained as Christian propaganda." (274)
Another example of Sanders's well reasoned, balanced historical appraisal occurs on page 260 in connection with Jesus' overturning of the money lenderers and pigeon sellers: "Moreover, I think it highly probable that Jesus himself intended the action to predict the destruction of the Temple, rather than to symbolize its need of purification. It is impossible, however, to prove that the statement about a 'den of robbers' was not actually said by Jesus or that what he said was 'I will destroy the Temple.' I must confess that I doubt the authenticity of the 'den of robbers' statement. It looks to me like an easy phrase for the evangelists to lift from Jeremiah to make Jesus appear politically innocuous to Greek-speaking Gentile readers."
Very like.
I've recently become acutely uncomfortable with the New Testament's blood libel of the Jews that's read at Catholic churches at Eastertime. Here Sanders is witty in his understatement: "The traditional Christian view that other Jews hated [Jesus] because he was good, and because he favoured love, which they opposed, will not do." Indeed.
I learned from this book that scripture says that the punishment for defrauding someone is full restitution plus twenty percent. I recently used this when my nine-year-old son stole four dollars from my five-year-old daughter.
This judicious scholar has given us the best introduction to Jesus from a historical perspective. I wish I had started with it--I've been interested lately in learning about the greatest figure in world history--though I agree with reviewer John Ryan, my Amazon teacher, that Jesus' political stance vis-a-vis the Roman Empire, which controlled the eastern Mediterranean, is largely overlooked even when it seemed to warrant a fuller discussion.
This book, a real tour-de-force by a consummate historian, does require a quiet setting and lots of time. Since I have neither in ample quantities, it took me over two weeks to finish reading. It's the most significant history I've read after Paul Johnson's Modern Times, Barbara Tuchman's Guns of August, and J.M. Roberts's History of the World.

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (A lot of fun.) 『The Classic Games Collection from Hasbro contains four games: Clue, Life, Monopoly, and Scrabble.
The best game of all four contained in the collection is undeniably Clue. It's too hard to play it with another player, and the more opponents involved, the better. Clue offers that with up to five computer players with three different levels: novice, normal, and expert. I went by each of three different levels, and there is a difference in terms of solving the mystery. The expert level feels pretty good and appropriate with no cheating like knowing the clues ahead of time or what cards I have. So, I was satisfied with the game play although I feel that every time somebody suggests three clues, it goes pretty fast. At the same time, it causes me a headache to watch the lighting and the animation video. If I turn it off, the asking of the clues goes real fast that I am more than certain to miss everything. It's just that I want to see that feature fixed up like the asking of each character in a list compiled by the computer. I don't want to use the auto-scribing of the clues because that completely takes away the basic concept of the game. Regardless, I've had a lot of fun playing Clue. As a word of warning, Clue will more likely not work on your PC because of some malfunction, but for me, it seemed to work just fine on my HP laptop with Vista Windows.
Life is, in my opinion, the worst game of this collection because it's so boring and requires nothing but luck. The game is mostly point-and-click and landing on spaces after a spin. My chief complaint of Life is that the game board is too big to see everything. So, if I want to see the spinner, I can't see where I am moving to, and if I want to see where I am moving to, I can't see the spinner. Most of the time, I don't know what the heck is going on except for pluses and minuses of the monetary sums. After a while, the game gets dreadfully boring. For anyone else interested and liked the game a lot, the CD works fine without a glitch.
Monopoly is a game I've liked but gotten bored after a few games. The concept behind Monopoly is pretty simple: get the grouped cards, build houses/hotels, and grab the money. The hardest part of the game is getting the grouped cards especially with as many as five opponents. Luckily, Monopoly allows trading, and that's where your game either gets made or broken. Like Clue, there are three levels of AI's intelligence, and I find the Tycoon level the hardest and haven't beaten that one yet. Still, I am pretty impressed overall. The game can be slow because I have to wait for each opponent to roll and move his piece, but worse is the annoying trade proposals which will halt the game for a while because I have to watch them. Overall, Monopoly is a very decently made PC game without any glitch.
Scrabble is actually a game for me because I've thought myself as a semi-hardcore player at it, but I've quit it due to addiction. There are many levels of AI's intelligence, and don't be angry that you find some of them extremely unfair. It's so because they know the dictionary inside-and-out, and yes...the words are valid, if you can believe it or not. So, how to get back to the AI: simple...memorize the dictionary. That's all there is to it. The CD went without a glitch. 』 『Make tonight a family game night! Since I bought the steel spartan and blue spartan with this, I could do a game of Assault that is in Halo Multiplayer (also is in Halo 2). In Assault you are supposed to Capure a flag, except each side switches from defending to attacking. For example: in "Zanzibar" the Attacker gets one Warthog and two ghosts on the beach. There are three ways to enter the defenders base, I'm sure you'd notice them. The defender has no vehicles, however, they get a rocket launcher and a couple more weapons. There was this movie recorded and it included the Zanzibar map. It is on www.halofiles.com, you should search the videos for that movie (It is big, about 122 mb). 18 minutes of combat from Halo 2, and the figures remind me of that battle.
