(for ALI completists only....nothing revelatory here.)
『This is a VERY short (38minutes) Collection of Ali interviews surrounding his fights...and often in very grainy black and white condition that seems almost bootleg in its lack of sharpness. This is the connective tissue they present between the bouts on bigger programs and run together make for a pretty dry viewing experience that somehow seems LONGER Than its mere 38 minutes. I love Ali, am glad to have it but would NOT recommend it to anybody but an Ali collector who has Ringside and the Complete and heck almost all the other DVDs available which are better.』

(Finally an inexpensive toy for a boy that's not a baby toy.)
『Both my kids 21 months son and 3 1/2 year old daughter love this dinosaur. He walks and roars. My son carries him around and hugs and kisses him. My daughter puts food in a bowl for him and takes him to bed at night and covers him up. My son wants toys like his big sister but needs durable toys. The button on his back is easy to work. Honestly I'd love a few more of these dinosaurs running around my house.』

(Spike Jr....A Good Alternative!)
『Spike Jr. is a great alternative!
Spike, the Ultimate Dinosaur was too large and much more expensive, a bit impractical for a 3 year old! I was disappointed that his mouth does NOT move as he roars, but at least it can be opened or closed manually. I think it is a great first dinosaur, and I hope it alleviates the constant begging for the larger one on display in the store!』

(Garage'o'fun)
『I purchased the Lego City Garage for my nephew's birthday. I had as much fun as him in putting it together which did not take that long. Overall, I felt that it was well worth the purchase; however, I wish that it had more to it than just a little office, main garage floor, and a "tight" garage for the tow truck. It seemed a little sparse not having more items to interact with in the main garage. Also, I would have preferred the whole thing to be a bit bigger for the price I paid.

All this being said, I was impressed that we had to build the majority of the buildings from the familiar small Lego pieces instead of pre-fabricated walls (although, there are some of these used). It was also nice to have 3 vehicles to interact with this item.

Putting this item together brought back fun memories of my Lego city when I was young and made me want to invest in additional pieces for my nephew (mainly so that I can play with them too!).』

『When the call comes in, the heavy-duty tow truck is ready to bring in just about any vehicle needing a repair to the garage. Once in the garage, repair the vehicles using the lift, crane and repair tools.』

(Nerf Vulcan Ammo)
『This is an ammo expansion set. Basically, it's useless without the N-Strike Vulcan gun. The bullets can be used for other Nerf weapons, true, but the chain can only be used with the Vulcan. I recommend this product for anyone who has or plans on buying the Vulcan, because two chains are better than one, especially in the heat of battle.

You can buy this product from Nerf directly (but the shipping cost is quite high). It can also be found at your local toy stores as well.』

(Nerf refill)
『I bought this after i bought the nerf vulcan. The rapid fire option worked great, because it gets a little unwieldy to pull the lever to reload while holding the heavy gun with the other. My son said it was a lot harder to reload because you had to take the belt out and put the 25 darts in. So i bought this so he had two belts to reload with. He loves having nerf wars with the kids around the neighborhood.』

(Nerf War)
『My boys absolutely love their nerf guns and I love to watch them run around playing. The only thing that would make the guns any better would be if they all came with lights. My kids and their friends like to play in the dark while hiding.』

(Extremely disappointed and a rip off)
『My two sons and husband are big "nerf" gun fans -- this gun was difficult to put together and once together the tripod stand releases everytime you attempt to use the gum. The rapid fire action will not work and has not worked from the time it came out of the box. Additionally, the gun is somewhat expensive. Save your money and just buy a single shot, hand held, less expensive Nerf gun -- it will certainly perform better than the sorry Vulcan!』

(breaks easily)
『This broke by the end of one day. Think carefully before you buy it or your child will be very disappointed.』
『This might just be the greatest Nerf blaster ever made! The Vulcan blasts 25 rapid-dire darts through its dart belt-feed, which actually whistle when fired through the air. It even comes with a tripod for more accurate firing and securing the area. Customizing attachments are sold separately. Hasbro. Ages: 6+』

(Good Book for my Child who likes to draw superheros)
『i enjoy watching my child use this comic book--who likes to draw superheros, great simple how to book---i reccomend for any beginning/ budding illustrator who likes this subject matter...my ONLY downsound was that it took longer than expected to ship-to us...but the slight wait seemed worth it...』

(Everyone looks the same!)
『Every character in this book looks the EXACT same. Here, Chris Hart tries to show how to emphasize certain muscle groups, but all of the men look the exact same (save for the outfit) and all of the women are big-chested with large buttocks. I returned this one immediately.

This book does NOT show how to emphasize muscles, it just shows one body type, and then shows the actual muscle underneath on the next page.

It's really pathetic. I would recommend "Sketching Manga Style: Sketching as a Composition" Volume 1. It shows the actual anatomy of a person, and the simplified one. Many more body types and poses as well.』

(Sipplified Anatomy for the Comic Book Artist)
『My only complaint with this book is that I don't like the simplified drawing style. It is a very good aide for those who would like to draw this style. Mr. Hart always makes an effort to make his instructions easy for his readers, and I would recommend all of his books to both beginning and advanced artists.』

(Very Good... Not Perfect)
『I'm in no way a professional cartoonist. I draw for personal satisfaction. My work is ok best so take my comments in that context.

This book is not a step by step instruction on how to draw comic book heroes... It assumes you know the basics and are looking to draw in a more streamlined manner similar to modern action animation being produced today. That being said it does give a lot of great tips and tricks that have really boosted my skills in a short amount of time and I'm not even finished reading the entire book yet. My only reason for giving it 4 stars is that I don't love the authors writing style. I'm a technical person and he obviously isn't one. I wish he was more organized and too the point. But that's a personal preference. He does know what he's doing and he's great at it. But for me I had to dig a little to get the good stuff out but it's there and it works.

One note about comments stating the drawing are inconsistent... I have to say I actually like that... Gets your mind working in order to form your own style rather than just copy what you see. It all works for me. I've very tempted to buy more of his books. I have the "Cartoon Cool" book but haven't started reading it. At first glance that one looks good too.

(Not for the beginner...)
『The style taught in this book is lovely, and the author/artist himself gives some wonderful examples of simplified comic book style heros. However, it shows rather than teaches more often than not, and does not go into enough detail on how the image is created. Definately not for the beginner, but a good guide for acomplished artists who need some ideas for new styles to try out.』
Maybe you’ve noticed. Today’s superheroes and action heroes aren’t as brawny and muscular as they used to be. In fact, almost all the characters in comic books and on TV have a fresh, new look--simplified, streamlined, edgier, with a hint of anime/cartoon design, and appealing to kids and adults alike. Now Christopher Hart, the superhero of how-to-draw books, has come to the rescue of artists everywhere withSimplifiedAnatomy for the Comic Book Artist.Anatomy has always been a difficult subject, but for this book Hart uses his straightforward approach to show a simpler way. In clear step-by-step illustrations and text, he shows: how to draw streamlined figures in poses; body types and muscles; the mechanics of facial expression; how to know which muscles to eliminate in a simplified drawing; grouping muscles; muscle contours versus bone contours; muscles in classic comic-book poses like flying and punching; and more. Now artist can stop struggling with the fine points of anatomy and start creating modern looking heroes and heroines with help fromSimplified Anatomy for the Comic Book Artist.

(Neato Mosquito)
『I had seen this book before because my friend had it. It was such a good book that I had to purchase one for myself.』

(Very good drawing instructions)
『Very good drawing instructions and examples for figure drawing with proper anatomy. Great reference book and teaching tool. Idividual body parts illustrated, especially hands and feet. Really helps to draw them more life like.』

(a reference book - not a how-to book !)
『This is a reference book, not a how-to book on drawing human bodies.
I repeat: this is not an instructional book! I bought this book believing it was.

It will not teach you how to draw bodies. It exists to show you what the the muscle structure looks like when drawing bodies - for example what the muscle structure is when you draw a man sitting down.
It is a reference-book to use when you what to draw a human body/body-part, so it is a very practical book to have, if not essential.

Also, the first 60 pages only talks about the history of figure drawing and goes into metaphysics, philosophy, history, science etc. That is not what I was after.』

(Why did I pass on this book for so long???)
『For over 20 years I saw this book on store shelves and it didn't resonate with me. I think I was intimidated by it. In the past year, though, I saw reviews of other books where the reviewers kept referring to and comparing to the books of Hogarth. Then I came across his entire series of books in my local library and took a deeper look at "Dynamic Anatomy" and "Dynamic Figure Drawing". What I didn't realize until actually reading these books is that Hogarth makes sure you understand not only the anatomy, but every defining subtle detail of the human figure that is normally taken for granted and not consciously identified. Moreover, he draws and describes each part in three dimensional shapes and uses metaphorical descriptions that can't be forgotten. The man was genius for not only being able to see things the way he did, but more so for being able to articulate it to others as well as he did.

Best of all, in combination with "Dynamic Figure Drawing", he teaches us how to build a person in any pose in your mind and then render and sculpt that form in three dimensions on paper (or screen) without any need to reference anything. Don't try to do it with "Dynamic Figure Drawing" alone. I started with that book and couldn't wait to jump into "Dynamic Anatomy" to get a better understanding of the fundamentals.

The books are so good (and affordable), that even though I could have easily continued to check them out from the library, I purchased them to have the ultimate reference on hand at all times. They're a must for anyone rendering the human form.』

(very disappointed!!)
『Im very disappointed, i bought it expecting to get know muscular "edge loops" for model good base meshes in 3ds max and zbrush and it would have show in different point of views, but this books covers art history in 64 pages, and have allot illustrations from "Dynamic Figure Drawing", Drawing Dynamic Hands and Drawing the Human Head, and some illustrated diagrams showing muscle names. I don't recommend this books 'cause is a resumed version of others Hogarth books.』
『Through action studies and practical diagrams contained in this book learn how to render anatomical details of the human figure in motion or at rest.』

(Lacks the insight compared to Drawing Lessons)
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1N2RCGG51GEYAAnatomy Lessons From The Great Masters is the sequel, sort of, to Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters (Practical Art Books). Again, 100 pieces of drawings from great masters are selected for analysing.

Compared to Drawing Lesson, this book is much more straightforward. The book is really like an anatomy reference which points you the parts of the body to look for. This pointing and labeling of parts isn't really called analyzing. It lacks the insight that goes into the creative process of these art masters. By comparison Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters really explores the thought process that goes into creating art.

While there are the usual anatomical reference drawings at the back, showing the bones and muscles from from and back views, it's not as comprehensive as other anatomy reference books.

The good thing about this book is of course the figure drawings. Most of them are sketches. It's really inspirational to look at the drawings created around the 15 century by artists like Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Rubens, Raphael, and other masters.

This book is not really an essential buy unless you're buying for the drawings.

I prefer Joseph Sheppard's Drawing the Living Figure which features a similar teaching style and has beautiful life drawings.

(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)』

(Good for Antamoy References)
『I will just say that this is very helpful for reference to specific part of the human anatomy. Especially the skeletal and muscular diagrams at the back of the book.』

(Good book)
『for us amateaur artists who want inspiration to create great works of art. This book shows the details of the human body and how great artists drew from live and dead bodies as they create the greatest masterpieces in art history.』

(Practice practice practice)
『I took an art class at the junior college and the instructor suggested copying the masters to improve drawing skills. I bought this book and copied every picture. Not only did it familiarize me with many artists I had not heard of but, over time my drawing skills improved dramatically. I am now buying collections of drawings of other artists and copying. I highly recommend the book not only as a reference but also to be used to improve skills. I have an engineering background, not art and this helped immensely.』

(Good book, but lacks in the following.)
『Pick up this book if you are looking for a great artistic anatomy reference book. If you are looking for more than reference, however, you might want to look elsewhere. While this book is definitely good, it doesn't give the artist direction in how to draw or depict the illustrations. The text is pretty much straight-forward, usually only noting the parts of the bodies in the images. Second, this book lacks the poetic and great writing of Robert Beverly Hale.

Anatomy Lessons from the Great Masters is more of an extra reference book or a supplement to Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters. In that book, Hale really teaches to the reader whats needed to depict anatomy, what steps the artist must take, gives tips on how to become a great or accomplished artist, why the artists of the past were so good, what mistakes beginners of figure drawing usually make, and sooooo much more. It's pretty much an incredible book to have even if you're not into figure drawing.

I think Anatomy Lessons would probably be more highly regarded in my eyes had Drawing Lessons been nonexistent. Anatomy Lessons is great for further reference, if thats what you're looking for though. I probably wouldn't recommend anyone to buy this book unless you already own or have thoroughly read and studied Drawing Lessons by the Great Masters.』
Anatomy Lessons from the Great Mastersprovides an anatomical counterpart to Robert Beverly Hale's classic reference book,Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters. Terence Coyle, who for several years assisted Hale at the Art Students League of New York, kept detailed notes of Hale's lectures and teaching methods. He combined these notes with 100 drawings to illustrate how the great masters portrayed specific parts of the human physique. As Hale points out, master artists such as Rembrandt, Leonardo, and Raphael "absorbed the technical details of anatomy so well that these details could be set down instinctively.... If an artist has to occupy his mind with the task of clumsily grouping the elemental facts of anatomy as he draws, there can be little room left for really important matters--such as the spirit of the drawing and the artist's expressive intent." Coyle provides several examples within the study of each anatomical area to illustrate the variety of styles and methods employed by the masters. The book treats, in order, the rib cage, the pelvis and thigh, the knee and lower leg, the foot, the shoulder girdle, the arm, the hand, and the neck and head. A complete series of anatomical reference plates by Dr. Paul Richer is included. By applying the timeless anatomical principles the great masters have handed down to us, any artist can begin to acquire the means by which to express the "really important matters."--Mary Ribesky
『This classic book, whose foremost author was one of the great artistic anatomy teachers of the twentieth century, is an invaluable instructor and reference guide for any professional, amateur, or student artist who depicts the human form. Revealing the drawing principles behind one hundred inspiring masterpieces, the book presents work by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rubens, Raphael, Titian, Rembrandt, and other greats. These superb portrayers of figures knew that the secret of drawing them was seeing how underlying bone and muscle structures mold the body's surface forms. (Confidence booster!)
『Bought two sizes to cover my two different size girls, both fit perfectly which is saying a lot since they both have high insteps. Solid ski boot design makes putting them on a breeze and near zero flex side to side really boosted time and confidence on the ice. Had absolutely no problem getting them sharpened. Solid purchase.』

(Consider others)
『These skates are durable for beginners because of their non-leather boots, but the blades are tough to repair and sharpen. They don't have much padding that can support your ankles and keep you warm. Not for advanced skaters since they don't have good toe picks. They may give you a hard time with hockey stops. The good part is if they break, it isn't heart breaking and doesn't waste your money. Consider other skates that are about the same price but better quality. Good for beginner hockey players but not so good for figure skaters.』

(Not great quality)
『The padding inside is very thin and stiff. My daughter did not think they were comfortable at all and we returned them. They were also pretty hard to adjust and did not look as nice as I was expecting from the photo online. All in all, I was pretty disappointed and would not recommend these skates.』
『Lake Placid Glider GT 500 Girls Figure Ice Skates - The Lake Placid Glider GT 500 features a sturdy molded boot built to last through all three of its sizes, effectively providing three skates in one. Model Year: 2008, Product ID: 96080』

(KETELBEY -- MASTER OF EVOCATIVE MOODS)
『The music of Albert W. Ketelbey appealed to me on first hearing, many years ago. His works are not 'heavy' classical compositions, but rather light, gently and sweetlt evocative of distant places and exotic cultures -- embodying a particularly British, empirical reflection of these cultures without belittling them in the least.

This cd is an assemblage of historic recordings, lovingly transferred from 78s from the 1920s and 1930s. Ketelbey himself conducts the orchestra on several tracks, and is featured on piano on two ('The clock and the Dresden figures' and 'Algerian scene') -- his presence here gives the modern listener a rare opportunity to hear the composer's interpretation of his own works. The collection was assembled from the recorded library of Stuart Upton, who also serves as producer and contributes some informative notes.

As valuable as this collection is -- and I'm happy to have it -- I would love to get a copy on cd of the wonderful recording released (and deleted) by Angel. The performances as well as the sound quality on that long-lost jewel are astonishing.』

(Just what the doctor ordered)
『This is the first cd I've heard by these guys after hearing about them for some time and I have to say I'm impressed. Black metal shrieks, death growls and very melodic chorused vocals ride on top of some the most furious and intense metal I've heard in a while. Very nice. They remind me at times of the best parts of later day Emperor mixed with Alien era Strapping Young Lad but that's as far as comparison's go. They have a sound that is almost majestic or epic at times, coupled with an original melodic sense all the while being as powerful as the best of extreme metal should be. Intense and brutal, this album is quite a ride. The last song Castigation And Betrayal is as manic and insane as blackened death metal (or whatever you want to call it) gets.』

(A Real Mixed Bag)
『This tape really should have an accurate description of what it offers prospective buyers. Based on the title I thought I was getting a tape of World Cup competition. What I got instead was performances by a group of former Olympians who were apparently on tour together. It is important to note that these skaters are performing on a stage as opposed to a regular ice arena. This means that they have only a 60 foot by 40 foot space on which to execute their moves. It is literally a stage, like those on which plays are staged, that has been covered with ice. Needless to say, the limited amount of space restricts their ability to perform.

In addition to the pared down skating, the filming leaves a lot to be desired. The cameras, trying for dramatic effect and unusual angles, shift and change focus in the middle of jumps, spins and complex footwork that you naturally want to see. I found this very irritating.

Finally, the commentary by Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner (themselves exquisite skaters who should have a lot of insight to offer) was dull, sporadic and awkward. At one point, for example, Tai has this to say about the skating of a Russian pair:"What I like about their skating is that it is influenced by ballet."Gee, really? Who would ever have guessed that Russians were influenced by ballet? Likewise, Randy's comment about Caryn Kadavy's skating does little to help the viewer. He says simply that she has really improved in the last year, then lapses into a long silence. He doesn't say how or why she has improved, or what distinguishes her skating from that of other top performers.

All of the problems aside, there is some exquisite skating to be seen. Peter Barna's Tango piece, Elizabeth Manley's immitation of a cat, skated to music from Cats, and the opening ensemble come to mind. However, you can forget about the stunning jumps and throws. There simply isn't room for them on the stage. Had I known what I was getting, I would never have purchased this tape, and honestly cannot recommend it to others.』

(Amazing Grace - NBC World Cup of Figure Skating)
『When my mom bought it I was really thrilled coz the cover of the tape is really nice. When I viewed the tape, God the picture and sounds are really great. the best part about the tape is the event full-packed with Figure skating greats. Triple Lutz after Triple Lutz was seen. The ladies' event was really a blockbuster. You can see how technically competitive the Ladies are. In the men's field, the triple axels were flying on both sides of the rink.... This tape is a must for figure skating fans like me. It's a really good investment for all of us.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review
(Both Good and Bad, but the Good Outweighs the Bad....)
『I totally and completely agree with the assessments on the quality of the video chosen for this tape -- it's grainy at times and in some parts of it there is an odd video border framing around the skaters. So, why 4 stars instead of 1 or 2? Well, it's because of the actual programs you get to see. You get to see Christopher Bowman skate an amazing, artistic, brilliantly placed exhibition program. Midori Ito skates a light and sweet show number that shows just a hint of the technical brilliance people would see months later at her history making win at 1989 Worlds. And Tonya Harding's 80s hairstyle in this video alone make it worth the price. :)

If you became a fan of skating in the pre Tonya and Nancy days, back when figures were still in competition and The Battle of the Brians was a topic of discussion for weeks afterward, even with your non skating fan friends, this video is a great walk down memory lane, despite the poor quality.』

(This video should be titled....)
『"We Pirated a Few Exhibitions from the 80's and Passed it off as a Video"They basically pasted together some exhibitions from competitions and the Champions on Ice tour and sold it as a video. It's like finding an old tape in the attic with some mediocre skating on it. If you're into nostalgia for the 80's though, you might enjoy this tape. However, its definitley over-priced.』

(Routines from the 1980's)
『I didn't like most of the routines on this tape, but if you like Tonya Harding, Midori Ito, Tiffany Chin, Brian Boitano, Christopher Bowman and so on, you might enjoy it better than I did. There were a few good pairs routines by Dmitrev and his old partner, for example, but nothing here that brings down the house.』
『In a breathtaking exhibition of athletic and artistic virtuosity Katarina Witt, Brian Boitano, Tonya Harding, Gordeeva&Grinkov, Victor Petrenko and a dazzling constellation of figure skating superstars, perform an extraordinary selection of free skating routines from the Tour of Olympic and World Figure Skating Champions. Uninhibited by competitive scoring, the best-of-the-best are free to execute some of the most daring, innovative and technically awesome moves possible on ice!』

(Outstanding!!!)
『This is a great DVD that captures the lives and stories of 4 people, 3 fighters and a trainer, trying to chase the brass ring in boxing, and life. A wonderfully gripping story that mainly focuses on the life of still active middleweight George Walton. You root big time for the 4 as they struggle to leave the tough Bed-Stuy NY neighborhood they live in. The only complaint here is that the DVD cuts off a nice bit at the end of the originally aired story that follows the reunion of George and his girlfriend, now (real life) wife, after her release from prison. This also deleats the 'where are they now?' updates. Great stuff though!』

(Entertaining but negative stereotyping)
『This is a pretty good documentary, although it's very typical and predictable. It's entertaining to watch, but it's a little bit like the guilty pleasure of watching a car accident. I wonder why so many documentary's are about underprivileged people who can't seem to escape from their poverty induced victim life. I'm not sure what the point of another hard knocks life film is, unless it shows that transcendence is possible. In the case of this film, the depressing stereotypes have only been perpetuated.

Personally, I prefer documentaries like When We Were Kings, Shadow Boxers, and Hoop Dreams - films that show us truely inspireing characters we have never seen before. Characters who prove that it is possible to confront your demons, whatever they may be, and win!』

(Champion documentary)
『This superbly crafted narrative documentary entertains as it informs, revealing the struggles of three young boxers and their trainer, all trying to rise above the circumstances of a tough neighborhood, their inner demons and self-doubts, and the pressures to exist and to succeed in the face of their dreams. Remarkably constructed, this documentary plays like a fiction film. The characters, each flawed and heroic, tell a powerful story of the human spirit, for which their sport, boxing, a familiar vehicle for such dramas, stands less as a symbol of our common fight to survive and to overcome and more as a way, a faith. Still, you can find some great boxing footage here, both in the gym and the ring. Watch out for the second round of Noel's Golden Gloves opening match! But that's just it. At the end of this film, these characters are just that: Noel, Harry, etc,: human beings. People you care about, who are fighting that which oppresses them, from within and without. Their stories are amazing and exceptionally well-told. This stands beside Hoop Dreams. Highly recommended.』

(a film about boxing and life)
『This film follows the lives of three poor inner-city youths who want to get into prize fighting. It's shown very clearly that their lives outside of the ring are tougher than any boxing match one can imagine. One of the subjects has legal battles to contend with, another is having problems in school and another is having problems with the people who run the fights. Anyone who believes boxing is an easy way out for inner-city blacks and hispanics should watch this film.』

(championship material)
『If you are a fan of the sweet science of boxing ,this video delivers a one two punch of reality, by dealing with the ups and downs of this sport. To triumphantly overcomming personal adverisity. No this video is not scripted which makes it a knockout for any boxing fan, don't be counted out on this one i'ts a must see』
『That every cliché and stereotype has some basis in fact is axiomatic. Boxing movies have long relied on archetypes such as the tough-but-big-hearted trainer who acts as a mentor, the crooked promoter, the hard-nosed kid who fights his way from the streets to the top.On the Ropeshas all of these, but the kicker is this film isn't fiction; this is a remarkable documentary that follows three young boxers, George, Noel, and Tyrene, in and out of the ring as they struggle with tough circumstances in their Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood while they train relentlessly for the Golden Gloves. Trainer Harry Keitt has his share of problems as well, going from a pro career and a stint as sparring partner for Muhammad Ali to crack addiction, homelessness, and jail, then taking up coaching as a road to redemption. A peek inside the personal lives of the three young athletes shows them to be tough but vulnerable kids, likable, courageous, and incredibly determined to see their way out of Brooklyn via a boxing career (there's another of those clichés come to life). As the three progress and move beyond the Bed-Stuy Boxing Center, Keitt must cope with seeing them leave his sphere of influence and move on. Filled with warm and very human characters,On the Ropesis a first-rate documentary and a behind-the-scenes look at a sports world that few of us ever see.--Jerry Renshaw
『Special Jury Award Winner at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival, On the Ropes is the compelling true story that follows the lives of three aspiring boxers and their trainer, Harry Keitt, one time sparring partner of Muhammad Ali.』

(Awesome movie and great music)
『There's nothing I can say positive about this movie that the other reviews haven't. From 'He's only 14!' to the last frame of Dewey clutching his chest, this movie rocks. The comedy is crazy in parts, yet subtle in others.

The one thing that really stood out at me, is the number of running jokes in this movie. Dewey's wife says he'll fail no matter how much he accomplishes, he tries each new drug in the bathroom, his music changes after each new drug, he's never home but has dozens of kids, he busts up bathrooms each time he gets peed off, his dad keeps saying the wrong kid died, he mispronounces the first two drug names 'reefers' and 'cok caine', and there's another one or two I found but can't think of.

This is a great movie, and the best comedy I've seen in years.』

(Was surprised I liked it so much.)
『Warning, mild spoilers ahead! (Very mild, don't think they will spoil anything)

I bought this (or rather the bilingual Japanese version) from Amazon.co.jp, which is why it doesn't list me as having purchased it through Amazon.com. I bought this in the hopes that I could share it with students in a university Media class that I teach. I didn't have much in the way of expectations, mainly because I knew next to nothing about it before buying it (I don't know if it was even released theatrically here), but I found that I really liked this movie. I never thought I would like a film where not 1, but 2 people get halved with machetes -- I never, ever, ever, ever, never, never thought I would say that. But there you go, never ever say never.

What is this movie? A parody of Walk the Line? A genre by genre comedic dance of the history of American popular music? A tour de force for John C. Reilly? I think it is a bit of all of these things. I think one of the most important things about this film is that it shows that Reilly is much, much more than a sidekick for Will Ferrell. He is a genuine talent. I loved the fact that after the elementary school aged Dewey Cox, it is always Reilly, with no intermediate stage actors, playing the character. Somehow I found it really funny when the 6 foot 4 , 40 something Reilly, was playing 14 year old Cox asking his mom not to embarrass him in front of his friends.

Much like Jerry Lee Lewis, Cox gets a twelve year old girlfriend, but she is played by a 30 something year old actress. Utterly absurd (but not in the derogatory sense). Like many good movies, the supporting cast makes a big difference. Tim Meadows, SNL alum (the Ladies Man) was very good as the drummer who was with Cox since the beginning of his career, and was his gateway into spiraling decline by enabling his drug use, running the gambit as enabler from pot in the 50s, to Viagra in the modern day. How about Harold Ramis (I didn't recognize him until his 2nd or 3rd appearance) as a Hasidic record producer, or David Krumolz (Charlie from Numb3rs) as long time agent. Jack Black as Paul McCartney? Frank Muniz (Malcolm, form Malcolm in the Middle) as Buddy Holiday? This film was fun from a "Who the hell is that!?!?" name that cameo, perspective. --Please don't complain that Jack Black has almost no physical resemblance to Paul McCartney, that and his accent is spoofalicious, it is part of the gag.

Speaking of which, one of the cool things about this film was its effective use of the running gag. It is so easy to overuse or misuse such things, but from Meadows continuous admonition of "You don't want any of this!", just before he pulls Cox into a new form of drug abuse, to Cox's tendency to tear sinks out of bathroom walls as a metaphor for despair, to his father's horrible mantra, "The wrong son died!", somehow they seemed to play all these jokes pretty well. This film was all about hyperbole. It really seemed to capture so much of American music, and troubled musicians, by showing intentionally exaggerated to the breaking point versions of different character types.

I can't understand the 1 star reviews given to this film, but I guess you can't argue taste, perhaps especially so in terms of humor. Either you get it or you don't. I think I got it. His wife, 13 or 14 years old at the time, already with a several kids (though remember, the actress is in her 30s), using as her telephone sign off, "I love you, you're going to fail!," or Cox not realizing that bigamy was illegal ("What, even if your famous?") was pretty genuinely funny.

I hope that this film makes a lot of money as a dvd, gains a following, and maybe cult status, because apparently it didn't get much notice in the theaters. I really want the powers that be to be encouraged to allow more, similarly creative stuff, and for John C. Reilly (and Harold Ramis, and Tim Meadows, and the other creative folks too numerous to mention) to be in a lot more things. This is not a Ferrell&Reilly comedy, minus Ferrell. This is its own, pretty cool thing that should be judged on its own (in my opinion) very high merits.

(Great movie, bad case)
『The movie is great, and it looks especially good on blu-ray. The only problem was the case was broken, the top left corner was cracked which keeps it from closing. I want to say that it must be a shipping problem, but I looked inside the box and I could not find the broken piece of the case which means that it must have been broken before it was put in the box.』

(A surprise funny film)
『I saw trailers of the film and didn't think I would like it. But. John C.Reilly has hit the mark this time, as most of his work has. It will have you in stitches. A funny title as well as a fun, funny film.』

(Very.Good.Product)
『I like this movie, because it is very funny, and I have seen the actor who work on this movie before in other movies.

『One of the most iconic figures in rock history Dewey Cox (John C. Reilly) had it all: the women (over 411 served) the friends (Elvis The Beatles) and the rock 'n' roll lifestyle (a close and personal relationship with every pill and powder known to man). But most of all he had the music that transformed a dimwitted country boy into the greatest American rock star who never lived. A wild and wicked send-up of every musical biopic ever made WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY is gut-busting proof that when it comes to hard rocking living and laughing a hard man is good to find.System Requirements:Running Time: 96 minutesFormat: UMD Genre: COMEDY/SATIRE Rating: R UPC: 043396248427 Manufacturer No: 24842』
『The Pixar-like roll of Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin,Knocked Up,Superbad) continues with another sure-fire hit. In charting the meteoric rise, catastrophic fall and Lazarus-like rise of rocker Dewey Cox,Walk Hardparodies the classic Hollywood bio-pic, cashing in mostly onWalk the Line. John C. Reilly, one of Hollywood's most solid character actors, makes the most of his Golden Globe-nominated star turn as Dewey, whose road to stardom is paved with a childhood tragedy that claims the life of his prodigiously talented brother ("The wrong kid died," is his father's mantra), instant stardom (his first record is a hit just 35 minutes after it was recorded), sex and drugs, and the inevitable "dark (effen) period" that leads him to rehab. Reilly gets solid backup from current and formerSaturday Night Livealumni, including Kirsten Wiig as his incredibly fertile first wife who has no faith in his musical aspirations ("You're never going to make it," she cheerily ends one phone call); Tim Meadows, never better, as Dewey's drummer, who, in one of the film's best scenes, does a poor job of dissuading him from trying marijuana); and Chris Parnell as his bass player. Jenna Fischer leaves Pam back atThe Officeas Darlene, Dewey's virtuous duet partner. Hilarious cameos giveWalk Harda great "Hey!" factor: Hey, that's Frankie Muniz as Buddy Holly. Hey, that's "Kenneth" from30 Rock. Hey, there's Jack Black and Paul Rudd as--no kidding--Paul McCartney and John Lennon revealing "a rift in the Beatles." Some of the jokes are obvious (come on; the guy's last name is Cox), others inspired. But the decades-spanning music, echoing the styles of gritty Johnny Cash, romantic Roy Orbison, obtuse Bob Dylan, trippy Brian Wilson, and even a bit of anachronistic punk rock, is as pitch perfect and affectionately observed as inThe Rutles,This Is Spinal TapandA Mighty Wind.Walk Hardearns its R-rating, particularly for a sure-to-be-talked-about scene of hotel-room debauchery. But: Hilarious? Outrageous? Twisted? To quote the title of one of Dewey's hit songs, "Guilty as Charged."--Donald Liebenson
