(Good show, but...)
『Well, it's overally good dvd, but as one of the reviewers wrote, you can only pause it during watching. I don't know who made such decision and why - there's really no point in it. But the good news is - if you have PC, it's very easily to overcome such minor annoyance - just copy all the stuff to your hardrive, and enjoy it to the fullest.
So my final scores are:
TV + standalone DVD: 2 stars
PC + internal DVD: 4 stars』

(Slow motion--forget about it!)
『Attention skaters: if you're buying this DVD because you think you'll be able to examine complex moves beautifully executed in slow motion, forget it! This DVD is encoded so that that "operation is prohibited." You can pause it, but that's it. (And no, it's not my DVD player; I have 2 players, both of which can go slow motion through other DVDs, but not with this one.)

Moreover, I found the extra features that do exist, like the on-screen bios, more of an annoyance than an asset. More skating, less talk&fluff, if you please!

That said, it might be worth buying for heartthrob Philippe Candeloro's swashbuckler routine.

(A very good video for figure skating)
『This a very good video that I can find for figure skating. It runs about 80 minutes. The video presents programmes from all the excellent medal winning skaters of 1998 Winter Olympic. Free from the pressure of the judges, the exhilarathing, free-form, anything-goes exhibitions will delight any fan of the art of skating.』

(Good video set with a few drawbacks)
『I enjoy all Olympic coverage and this was no different. On the competition tape, the complete programs of Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski are a good enough reason alone to buy this set. But there was a noticeable lack in the Ladies coverage by not showing Chen Lu's gorgeous"Butterfly Lovers"- her bronze medal-winning LP - after she overcame enormous odds just to appear in these Olympic Games. The Ladies coverage was disappointing and very USA-centric - none of the Ladies competitors from outside of the US were even mentioned much less shown.

Also, since the majority of the programs on this tape are edited, the video comes across as rushed and choppy. What's there has been done well but seeing so many brief, edited clips of programs will leave the dedicated skating fan disappointed and wanting more.

Overall the tape quality is great, very crisp and clear. And it will definitely bring the excitement of the games back to you! They've done as well as can be expected when fitting over 20 hours of televised Olympic skating coverage into 80 minutes.

The exhibition tape is much better than the competition tape. All of the performances shown are uncut and it's extremely fun to watch. This is definitely the better tape in the set!』

『Arthur Ashe is known to most of us as a great African American tennis player who broke down racial barriers in a game considered for the wealthy.Ashe was far more than an athlete or a symbol of racial equality. In tribute to Arthur Ashe, HBO presents this thrilling documentary of a man who went beyond the game and symbolism to become a world wide force of change.

Who was this soft-spoken young man? A native of Virginia, Ashe intimately knew the world of segregation. His parents knew of a better world for him and thus insured that his talent as a tennis player was developed. Our film takes us to the places and people who impacted upon the young Ashe's life. They instilled in him the sense of hard work, being a good sportsman but most of all being the ambassador for Blacks whose presence in the sport of tennis was negligible.

You can't help but be moved over his courageous spirit in going through two heart attacks and then being diagnosed with aids. For some athletes such news would be a sad ending. For Ashe it was a catalyst for him to do more and the world has appreciated his efforts.

Watching this film will make you appreciate the quiet strength, love and determination of a man who was above his class in the sports arena. The world was blessed with a man who was a scholar, athlete, coach and activist who fully gave of himself.』

『Very cool new Robot from Lego. Excellent retro design. Seems very 1950's sci-fi with the feel of a James Bond-esque villian. Excellent for kids to build and play with (if child is around 4,5 or 6, help them with the build). And it's very poseable. Also there's so many extra's in this set with figures and vehicles. Just excellent.

PRO's-Robot design, right hand rotating claw (which can hold the mini-figures in its grasp), left hand with a great idea from lego: a light up brick that attaches to the left arm to light up a 'flame thrower' type weapon (excellent idea). Villian sits in the bubble headed top of the robot, which can be opened and the villian can eject and escape via a small escape pod/craft. Torso of Robot can also be detached from legs and used as an escape vehicle. You also get a Lego Agents jump jet plane with 2 flick fire missiles, a 4 wheeler vehicle, 2 lego agents (Chase and Trace), 3 civilians (one with a camera) and the villianous Dr. Inferno (I think that's his name) with a rubber head-dress design and brush metal right arm/claw. The 4-wheeler has a rope (string is strong) attached to a wench on the back end with a hook.

CON's-Really none except the 4-wheeler could be slightly better designed (perhaps a more detailed vehicle and could use a 'crank' or lever to help pull the rope/string-but you can do this with your thumb anyways). Also mid-torso area doesn't completely rotate 360 degrees. It goes all the way right and all the way left but to completely rotate 360 it touches/taps part of some bricks and makes them separate if done too hard. Lego should've just added a small center piece to lift torso slightly so it rotates smooth.

Other than my above 'CON' suggestions, this is an excellent toy/model from Lego. I HIGHLY recommend it to new and old lego collectors and especially for young kids to play with. A Robot, 2 vehicles (4 if you count in the escape pods from the Robot) and 6 mini-figures. JUST A GREAT SET!

『Reid uses pencil to make a simple loose sketch then applies paint in amazing combinations to reveal the figure. His simple seven color palette seems to be able to do the figure quite well. His color choices are wild, but work to show the essence of the person, which is what I want to do in making a painting. This is very much a hands on text. Reid has taught many classes on the figure and he lays out his "mistakes" then shows how he corrects to be more comfortable with what he is trying to achieve. This is the best how to paint the figure book I have seen. A great buy for the money.』

These won't stand up to really young kids pulling at the pop ups, but older toddlers will enjoy these type of books. 『My son brought this book home from the library. I can only say that I love Traction Man! He enjoyed the book, the action, and most of the humor (some of it was a bit beyond him). But I loved it--the pictures--the imaginative story. I told my son that a Traction Man book is what I want for MY birthday. 『I first discovered Darling when she opened for Squeeze in Las Vegas. I really enjoyed her set and picked up this disc after the show. She has a very nice voice and her songwriting is strong. Her music if fairly typical singer songwriter fare with a some folk, rock and pop mixed in. Her songwriting is personal and introspective. Highlights of the album include the single "Bulletproof Belief", "Overloading God", "Bury You" and "Soak Me". Darling's stuff is similar to other female singer songwriters, but there is something about her that raises her above the average. She also plays piano and guitar and is very entertaining live.』

『This album is very, VERY good! At first listen, it didn't make that much of an impression on me, I felt it sounded familiar. But I'm glad I didn't let that scare me away from this superb disc! As when I listened to it for the second time, I discovered the great songwriting, and fine crafted lyrics. 『It's unfair of the Amazon.com reviewer to lump all female pop artists together. Of course they're going to sound similar; heck, all of rock music sounds the same from 30,000 feet. You have to look at each CD's individual characteristics. Julia is a talented vocalist, but she also plays acoustic and electric guitar, piano, and percussion. She writes all her songs, and she came up with some interesting melodies that she doesn't drown out in the mix. Check out the clip of Soak Me, which is right in the heart of the chorus (Soak Me, by the way comes from wanting to just soak away your troubles after a long day). The clip for Bury You doesn't do it justice. The chorus reveals a contempt for arrogant people that I'm sure we can all appreciate ("I would like to bury you/underneath your arrogance/...if I bury you would anyone notice you're gone?"). I think the single was Bulletproof Belief, and it's definitely the most accessible song on the album. Look beyond the catchy guitars, and you'll see a woman whose religious upbringing is clashing with the real world: "Is he around when the world is wailing? / Is he around when I am failing? / There is no divine intervention here / promises will never ever serve my dreams." All I'm saying is take a listen for yourself and don't be prejudiced by an Amazon reviewer who can't even spell Sarah McLachlan.』
『Julia Darling is another copycat of the Lilith Fair scene. What could have been an original reshaping of a well-worn sound is just another set of anonymous footprints on the beach. The opening cut, "Overloading God" sends overdubbed shout-outs to angels and spirits on top of the predictable folk-rock accompaniment of cellos and acoustic guitars. Songs like "Soak Me" and "My Inanimate Friend" deliver every cliché in the bag, sometimes two or three times in the course of a single tune. It's pleasantly done, and anyone who is already of a fan of Sarah McLaughlin, Paula Cole, or Jewel may enjoy this heaping helping of More Of The Same. 『It's amazing how too many inexperienced bands can be as predictable as rain - almost all of them have that glossy 'stars in their eyes' look, view themselves as the best band to ever hit the airwaves, no doubt that they are the only members of their fan club. That is exactly what Magellan is all about. This is yet another of their albums that has no charm, no charisma, no memorable melodies, no originality, no singular identity - compared to the Prog Rock scene around them they are about as interesting as a sidewalk. And it goes on album after album. They play well, but what does it mean if a fine Heart surgeon operates on your Kneecap? The real beauty of any album is how often one listens to it 5 years later, and that's what this album won't do. After a couple listens the interest is gone because there was none to begin with. Shallow, derivative, superficial. Most telling is that as I write this, already there are 57 used titles available. And if that's not all, the opening track is called "Gorilla with a Pitchfork". That says it all.』

『I took a chance on this album because they are carried by InsideOut Music. I was not disappointed. There is great musical talent and impressive song writing. Since I am a huge fan of YES, Genesis, and Spock's Beard, I enjoyed the multiple layers of sound on this CD. I even think that track 9 was meant to be a sort of tribute to Starship Trooper (the ending instrumental is extremely similar--I loved it).

I love epic prog, but if you feel like a break from 15+ minute songs then this might be a good alternative. It certainly is better than the garbage coming out of the radio stations.』

Anyone who considers themselves a fan of progressive rock, should pick this album up. there's songs you may have to listen to a few times to like, but once they hook in, they don't let go easy. there are also some great instrumental parts on this album as well.』

『I think the statement in one of the previous reviews"doesn't fall prey to long, boring epics with a million ideas like many prog bands"is the exact antithesis to good prog rock (except the boring part, of course). Progressive music is supposed to be full of changes, complexities, different time signatures, instrumentation, etc. Do you know what you get when you remove all of these elements? Just plain rock 'n roll . . . and you can get THAT anywhere. Magellan is one of the many, many, many underexposed bands of this genre, and although Test of Wills is still my favorite Magellan album, this album is well put together, thoughtfully composed and HUGE on talent (I even like the new drummer). Long is good. Complex is good. BOMBAST is very good!』

『Along with Neal Morse Testimony, this is the best prog release of 2003. It's all in magellan vein but with a new musical focus. Killer of Hope is an epic one. The highlights are in the Trent Gardner voice, and in Wayne bass parts!!The best we reached on Late for church, a kansas oriented song!! Killer Of Hope" is a testament to their worthiness as world-class musicians and writers of complex compositions. The catch-all in their music is the way it changes so quickly. Trent will play a beautifully classical passage on his keyboards, quickly it shifts to Wayne banging out sweeping and crushing blows from his six-string, then suddenly it all comes together creating a supernova of musical bliss. It is like watching a volcano flowing from far away, it looks like its moving slow, then you find yourself standing right at the edge of the opening at the top of the mountain were the explosion is forcing out the hot molten lava from the center of the earth incredibly fast. That is what Magellan's music is like. Now that is powerful.
Like progressive rock? This band is one of very best in the world so get this CD.』

『This is the first cd I've heard by these guys after hearing about them for some time and I have to say I'm impressed. Black metal shrieks, death growls and very melodic chorused vocals ride on top of some the most furious and intense metal I've heard in a while. Very nice. They remind me at times of the best parts of later day Emperor mixed with Alien era Strapping Young Lad but that's as far as comparison's go. They have a sound that is almost majestic or epic at times, coupled with an original melodic sense all the while being as powerful as the best of extreme metal should be. Intense and brutal, this album is quite a ride. The last song Castigation And Betrayal is as manic and insane as blackened death metal (or whatever you want to call it) gets.』

(Sleazy film, but interesting story and GREAT MUSIC!)
『OK, this film is not for prudes--it's pretty sleazy. It's about a young nymphomaniac who ends up in the care of a single black man who has just lost his wife to his brother and is ticked off about it. What happens between them is pretty unusual and is what makes this film unique.

I love Hill Country Blues, the music championed by such luminaries as the late great R.L. Burnside and the North Mississippi Allstars. the NMA contribute to the soundtrack, and most, if not all of the songs sung by Samuel T. Jackson (who does a great job) are R.L. Burnside songs. Just the fact that a filmmaker is honoring the music of the under-heralded R.L. Burnside is enough to deserve a five-star rating. Burnside's sidemen (including his grandson Cedric) appear in the film to accompany Jackson's performances, adding authenticity to the music.

And what the hey, the movie ends overall on a pretty good note, so some of the "dirtiness" you might feel watching this film should disappear by the end!

Living and singing the blues was never all peaches and cream, hence the dark tones in this flick--just makes it all bluesier! RECOMMENDED FILM for all blues fans! Oh, and for all Christina Ricci fans--she's pretty hot in this film! :-)』

『BLACK SNAKE MOAN

I remember when this film first came out all I heard about was some big controversy about a black man chaining up a naked white woman. My first thought was who cares I have seen more offensive things on cartoons, I mean come on. So the time went by and I never had the desire to watch this movie, at first. Eventually my brother brought this by and said he had been wanting to see it forever, not because of the stuff sounding the film but because of the great Sam Jackson. I agreed and said if he was in it then it probably would be good, plus I liked the writer/director's last film before this one. So I gave in and sat down to watch the movie and while I never felt offended ever threw out this I was surprised because I had no idea Justin Timberlake was in this.

Rae [Ricci] is a disturbed girl who seems to not be able to overcome a past traumatic event involving sexual abuse and rape. In fact it is so bad that when she goes into her attacks she resorts to the only thing she learned as a little girl, sex with men. So after her man leaves for the military named Ronnie [Timberlake] she immediately goes into these attacks caused by his absence. She goes on to have sex with any and every man that she can when that feeling hits. That all starts to change one night after she is beaten and left for dead by Ronnie's brother later to be found on the road by Lazarus [Jackson].

Lazarus has some problems of his own seeing that his wife has left him for his brother and his blues career is long gone. He is having enough trouble with out Rae when he stumbles upon her, he takes her in and starts to care for her. While in his care she comes in and out of conciseness every time in the middle of one of her episodes. Each time she throws are self at him and continues to do so when she comes out of it, I guess to thank him. It is at this point he sees what is going on and decides to cure her of her sickness, hence the now famous her tied up with a chain scenes. The movie plays out in what really was not all that controversial and actually kinda makes sense in a weird way. Ronnie is coming home and he has problems himself as we learn and Lazarus has a few friends that become involved.

After watching this movie I did not see what the big deal was and can only believe it is because of the way the film was marketed. If the roles were reversed and an old white man had a young sex craved black woman tied up I still don't see any problem as long as the story was the same, but I am sure that would have been just as controversial. I think writer/director Craig Brewer did a good job with this film and took a whole different way than what I was lead to believe this film was. The film was actually a good piece of entertainment which is what films are all about, mostly. The film did have problems like most but over all I enjoyed it, a cool film about very different people helping each other find themselves. Also the shots in this film are excellent with the opening credits as a great example as is the blues music choosen for this, great stuff.

As for performances Samuel L. Jackson as always was good and played the ex blues singer Lazarus well, he seems real dark at times but over the course of his time spent with Rae he becomes who he once was. Christina Ricci just may be the MVP of this production with a wonderfully sick performance. Sick as in the characters problems not a twisted horror movie kinda way, and she even gets topless and has some sex scenes. She goes from a sex crazed victim [love the scene with her mother] to a young woman learning how to deal with her problems. Still I was very surprised at the time I saw this with the performance of singer/actor Justin Timberlake. I have seen him in other things since [each time he has been great] but this was really the first time I can remember seeing him in a role like this. Timberlake impressed me with his performance here and the way he played the character when he returned home only to learn of his wife's affairs is great, turns out he has anxiety problems so he is messed up to. The last scene with Ricci and Timberlake is probably my favorite and he really shines in that scene. John Cothran as well is excellent in this as the preacher friend of Lazarus, Michael Raymond-James is great in this as well.

This is not the best movie ever and some may say it is not the best follow up to his Academy award winning "Hustle&Flow" but I liked it. Sure this film could have used some work but I think most fault lies within the studios marketing of the film. Even the people involved with this film Ricci in particular did not like how it was marketed. If handled correctly and shown for what kind of film it truly is the film would have probably faired better. But hey who am I to say that, I am just a guy behind a keyboard, what do I know?

(A little bit more than just sexy exploitation junk)
『I've got to admit, I got this for less than noble reasons, perhaps even prurient ones. Christina Ricci running around near-naked for the whole film? That's something I have to see...

OK, enough of the dirty old man act. EXCEPT, that's what the film is aiming at, isn't it? The poster -- the ads -- the first scene -- this is going to be an exploitation film, and an over the top one at that: nubile, waifish nymphomaniac Rae (Ricci) ends up bloodied and beaten, on farmer and ex-bluesman Lazarus' (Samuel L Jackson) doorstep, just at the moment when Jackson seems about ready to go 'round the bend.

So Lazarus, after nursing the physically sick Rae back to health over a couple of days does what any rural farmer in the south would do with a woman half his age and of another race -- he chains her to a radiator in some odd misguided effort to cleanse her of "evil spirits" or some such nonsense; it's never spelled out very explicitly just what Lazarus believes, or doesn't believe, he can do.

There's plenty of sleazy, trashy fun to be had here; our heroine does indeed run around in next to nothing for nearly the whole film, and Jackson's tortured musician Lazarus embodies a whole lot of fun southern black stereotypes -- and I do mean fun; this is certainly a film that tries to avoid racism at all costs. If anything, it's saying that sure, blacks and white are a little different -- they're just messed up in different ways, and we'd best try to understand that, because we're all in it together. They certainly are in director Craig Brewer's vision of the mid-south -- this small town has to be the best-integrated place in America.

But never mind all that. The film moves, the dialogue is mostly crisp, the acting (especially, and surprisingly, by Justin Timberlake as Ricci's rather confused boyfriend Ronnie) is solid. The biggest problem that it has I think, is that it doesn't know whether to continue down the sordid route, or attempt a little morality play and make nice at the end. Unfortunately it goes the latter route and ends up feeling too nicey-nice, but there was enough realistic local color and heart to the whole thing that I still found myself enjoying it.』

『This is a movie that the Academy somehow overlooked. Not since "Saving Private Ryan" lost Best Picture to a sub-average "Shakespeare in Love" have I been so perplexed as to "what were they thinking?". Black Snake Moan is a cool, sexy movie with a lot of class. Samuel Jackson finally gets a movie worthy of his talent (best work since "Pulp Fiction" and "The Negotiator", and Christina Ricci is worthy of a best actress nod as well. The story is dark, the music is soulfull, and the movie was at the top of my "must own" list.』

After bringing her inside, he learns of her wanton ways and decides to exorcise his own demons by curing Rae of her sexual compulsion.Black Snake Moancould have been terrible, but Brewer takes his story seriously enough to dig into the genuine emotions of such a situation (though along the way he certainly flirts with sexploitation overtones--several scenes look like they were plucked straight out of a hitherto unknown 1970s trash classic). Ricci, Jackson, and the supporting cast (including pop star Justin Timberlake, giving a surprisingly good performance as Rae's boyfriend) treat the characters with respect, honesty, and humor. The result is off-kilter and maybe a little too fond of its sleazy cinematic forbears to truly hit the emotional notes it's after, butBlack Snake Moanhas considerably more substance than its marketing would suggest.--Bret Fetzer
