Assassins is a unique musical; both thought-provoking and catchy. Sondheim's songs are alternately haunting (The Ballad of Booth, Another National Anthem) and darkly humorous (How I Saved Roosevelt, Unworthy of Your Love, The Ballad of Guiteau). It's rare that every song in a musical is a home-run, but Assassins is start-to-finish full of brilliant, memorable songs.
So much for Assassins as a show, but why this recording, why not the original 1991 version? I liked the 1991 version alright, the singers do an adequate job, but the orchestration and casting of the revival bring the show to life in a way that the original never does. From the opening with Everybody's Got the Right the surreal, carnival world of Assassins unfolds as vividly as a soundtrack possibly can. The cast is superb; alternately frightening, pathetic, and contemptible. Michael Cerveris as Booth, Denis O'Hare as Guiteau, Jeffrey Kuhn as Zangara and the rest of the assassins sound truly insane at times. Neil Patrick Harris is pitch-perfect as the Greek Chorus onlooker who becomes the cornerstone of the Assassins' pantheon.
I've never seen Assassins performed, but it caught me from the first listen. In the list of Sondheim's inspired musicals, this one stands out; it's terrifying, imposing and unforgettable.』
(Uninspired) 『I can muster only two stars for this revival of "Assassins" and I think I'm being a bit generous, considering that I cannot listen to more than one song at any given time and I usually don't make it through to the end of one. I have listened to it once, in its entirety, and that was more than enough for me; it's since been relegated to occupying space under a pile of DVDs; out of sight, out of mind. In order to write this review, I tried listening to the whole thing again, operative word being "tried."
One thing I immediately noticed about this recording when I first bought it was that something sounded "off," only I couldn't quite figure out what. Once I tried a second listen, with headphones, I realized what it was; rather than being traditionally recorded like most CRs, in studios with proper acoustics, the actors were recorded in a soundproof booth. That may seem like a minor complaint, but it definitely has an adverse effect on the vocals and, by extension, the listening experience as a whole. Rather than re-create the atmosphere of the theatre, in which the voices and instruments seem to fill the room (and provide the wonderful "ring" produced with proper acoustics), the voices here are smothered, deadened, absorbed by the soundproofing material of the studio booth. Several times, one can hear the voices striving to ring out, only to have them sucked into that merciless black hole of foam which makes everything sound unbearably leaden.
Baker gives a wholly detached performance as Moore, sounding as if she's still half asleep and couldn't be bothered to muster the necessary energy. Near the end of the opening number "Everybody's Got the Right," Cerveris and Kudisch (as the proprietor) sound so much alike, I can't tell which man is singing which line. The proprietor comes across far too smug and smarmy, rather than slick, smooth and Machiavellian (for the latter, think "Chicago"'s Billy Flynn had he failed at law) and Cerveris' accent does shift around during the course of the recording. Although O'Hare does manage to sing a dozen or so pleasant "I am going to the Lordy"s in "The Ballad of Guiteau," it's not enough to win me over. His voice isn't particularly strong and the effeminate quality in his delivery could be considered offensive by some; I merely find it irritating (I freely admit to being partial to Hadary's interpretation of Guiteau - you shall be remembered! indeed). In all the performances, notes, at times, seem flat, harmonies not as intricate, and sustained notes are few and far between. All the humor has been completely leeched from "Gun Song."
Other reviewers have mentioned the brighter or "cartoonish" quality of the music and I have to agree with them. The mood created isn't as dark as it should be and I believe Sondheim's score suffers from this particular orchestration. By lightening the tone, the subversiveness is negated and if "Assassins" is anything, it's subversive.
I am appreciative of the inclusion of the spoken parts that tie into the musical numbers, as well as the monologues of Sam Byck, but I can't warm up to, or connect, with this recording. The characterizations seem lackluster, without electricity or nuance. I was disappointed, I wanted to like it and went in with an open mind and high hopes, but, unfortunately, this revival recording is unable to match the brilliance of the original. It would seem that Garber, Hadary, Mann, Korbich et.al did leave an indelible stamp on the material.
"Assassins" is a wonderfully provocative, food-for-thought musical revue that certainly isn't for everyone but, for those who don't mind darker, more cerebral material, it's time well spent. However, if you want to experience it, I can't recommend doing so via this revival recording; go for the far superior, original, off-Broadway cast recording instead.』
(Parting shots) 『Stephen Sondheim's 1991 revue-style musical about US presidential assassins, which intelligently shows the drak Dionysian underside of the Apollonian American dream, has acquired a great cult following since its premiere. In 2001 it was decided to re-mount the show in New York, this time on Broadway, but the events of 9/11 prompted the producers to put it off for another three years until feelings were less raw about national tragedies. In many ways this is a much more successful re-mounting of the show than the original off-Broadway production: the orchestrations are much richer and more clever, and allow for more texture to the entirety. Moreover, this version retains the song added during the London run of the musical, "Something Just broke," which shows the shock and horror of ordinary US citizens when they heard of the four successful presidential assassinations (of Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, and Kennedy), which may7 not be musically the most beautiful song Stephen Sondheim has ever written but which is absolutely necessary to convey the repercussions of what the assassins have done. In the original production, Oswald's assassination of Kennedy was treated as more important and more devastating than the assassinations of Garfield and McKinley (and perhaps even of Lincoln), a sentimental choice which may have reflected the personal experience of Sondheim and his collaborator James Lapine but which seemed to work strongly against the transhistorical perspective of the musical (which has all the assassins existing and committing their crimes in near simultaneity). Here all the assassinations are treated as devastating, which seems much more in keeping with the show's intentions and seems much fairer to the memories of those who lived in the time of Garfield and McKinley.
The best thing about this show is it offers a wonderful showcase for singing actors to show their stuff as the assassins and as their two provocateurs and commentators, the Proprietor and the Balladeer (who later morphs into Lee Harvey Oswald). The cast here features several absolutely splendid singers, led by Marc Kudisch (in glorious voice as the Proprietor), Michael Cerveris (who won a Tony Award for his sweet-voiced portrayal of John Wilkes Booth), Jeffrey Kuhn (as Giuseppe Zangara, the explosively furious unsuccessful assassin of FDR) and Neil Patrick Harris (as the Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald). Equally strong is Denis O'Hare, who gives an adorably optimistic and scruffy voice (somewhat reminiscent of Paul Winchell's Tigger for the Disney films) to Charles Guiteau, the assassin of Garfield.』
(Brain Candy) 『Assassins is another one of those uncoventional musicals by Stephen Sondheim. Brilliant in its musical execution but lacking in the kind of heart one often seeks from musical theater. That said, it really does offer a lot of mind fodder as it explores the psyches of those who have attempted to assassinate America's chief executive officers throughout history. You'll be perversely pleased by Sondheim's zesty wit as displayed in the overly cheerful, sweet as candy songs. But soon his saccharin tone leaves you feelin' a bit bitter in the stomach as you try to digest the fact that we are talking something as serious as taking the life of another. Not sure this is palatable for all. But if you want something that makes you think, something that plumbs the playhouse's darker corners, you'll get some kick out of Assassins. So begins Stephen Sondheim's 1991 showAssassins--and in this case, said dreams involve killing an American president. The characters form a veritable rogues' gallery, including John Hinckley, Lee Harvey Oswald and John Wilkes Booth of course, but also half-forgotten luminaries such as Leon Czolgosz (who killed McKinley) and "Squeaky" Fromme (who aimed for Gerald Ford with an unloaded gun). While Sondheim's lyrics are trenchant as ever, his music, which ranges from Sousa pomp to clever little waltzes, is technically brilliant but also oddly uninvolving. (Many fans prefer the recording of the 1991 Off-Broadway version, though "Something Just Broke," which was added to the 1992 London production, makes its recorded debut here.) Still, there are several high points. In "Unworthy of Your Love," for instance, Hinckley and Fromme wax poetic about their unrequited love for Jodie Foster and Charles Manson, respectively, in a Burt Bacharach-style ballad that's deliberately (I hope!) sappy. Now that the cd-version is available, I hesitate to make the switch. I have listened to samples presented on Amazon's website and I really liked what I heard. So, I'm stuck with a major problem here! Anyway, for me the absolute top performances here are those by William Parker and Elly Ameling. Ameling stands at the very summit of her glorious career here. She brings an unsurpassed natural brightness, tenderness as well as a sprightly innocence to these songs, fully in line with Poulenc's own distinctly Mediterranean "grande chaleur". Parker not only carries a voice so completely unique and full of splendid, colourful nuances, but his French is impeccable, period. Such incredible splendour and wonderfully fine-tuned musicality should have been appreciated much more highly and explicitly by the big recording companies and public performance agencies of special repute. The man seems to have gone into total hiding for quite a while already. A shame and a pity. However this maybe, buy this collection of absolutely marvellous mélodies. You'll cherish your set for the rest of your life.』

Buy It.) 『'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.
I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.』
(Almost completely wonderful) 『Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.』
(Indisputable Gallic flair) 『These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. The 1994 Winter Olympics Highlights tape contains segments of the most prominent events. It includes Tommy Moe's (USA) gold medal downhill run, as well as Picabo Street's (USA) silver medal downhill run. You can watch highlight clips of Sweden defeating Canada in a shoot-out in men's hockey. There's also footage of Dan Jansen (USA) and Bonnie Blair (USA) in their speed skating events. Although the other two tapes of this gift set are solely devoted to figure skating, this overall highlights tape does include some coverage of the figure skating events, including highlight clips and performance excerpts.
The 1994 Winter Olympics Figure Skating Competition Highlight tape begins with an excerpt of Tonya Harding's (USA) technical program, and next comes the complete technical program of Nancy Kerrigan that put her into first place, with the free skate yet to come. The tape includes Nancy Kerrigan's complete free skate, shown with her receiving a standing ovation. Last, there's the complete free skate of Oksana Bayul (UKR) to a medley of Broadway show tunes. On the day before the free skate, Oksana had been injured in practice by another skater, but she pulls out all the stops in her free skate to win the gold medal in come-from-behind fashion.
The pairs event featured the reigning world champions from Canada, Isabelle Brasseur and Lloyd Eisler, against two Russian pairs that had been reinstated to amateur status from the professional ranks. The first pair, Yekaterina Gordeeva and Sergei Grinkov (RUS), had won the Olympic gold medal back in 1988, while the second pair, Natalia Mishkutenok and Artur Dmitriev (RUS), had won the Olympic gold medal more recently in 1992. It was a clash of styles: Brasseur and Eisler (B&E) were exciting, Gordeyeva and Grinkov (G&G) were elegant, and Mishkutenok and Dmitriev (M&D) were passionate.
The controversy in the pairs event began with the technical program, as many people thought that M&D should have been in first place instead of G&G. 1992 Olympic men's silver medalist, Paul Wylie, commented, "I love G&G, but I was surprised when they were put first. I didn't understand it." M&D had skated a fine technical program, and it's unfortunate that only a few highlight clips have been provided on this tape.
An excerpt of M&D's free skate is next. Peter Carruthers, 1984 Olympic pairs silver medalist, said, "As far as being interesting and passionate, Mishkutenok and Dmitriev have something that nobody else has, a controlled abandonment." This is followed by the complete free skate of G&G, and finally an excerpt of B&E's free skate. G&G made a number of obvious errors in their free skate, including (1.) at 32s into the routine, Gordeeva used an improper left back inside takeoff edge during the split triple twist that should have been an outside edge; (2.) at 33s, Gordeeva demonstrated poor aesthetics during the split portion of the split triple twist, with both of her knees bent at ninety degrees; (3.) at 1m 00s, Gordeeva was leaned forward on the landing of her throw double axel, riding up onto the toepick; (4.) the pair became unmistakably out-of-sync near the end of their side by side spins, which begin at 1m 09s; (5.) at 2m 27s, Grinkov made a very sloppy landing on a double flip during a jump sequence, while Gordeeva swerved during her check position on the landing, going from a right back outside edge over to an improper inside edge and then back to an outside edge, in order to maintain her balance; (6.) at 3m 54s, Gordeeva used an improper left toepick assist during a loop in a jump sequence. (7.) during the same sequence, Grinkov singled what was intended to be a double Salchow at 3m 56s; (8.) at 4m 31s, Gordeeva had a break in her free leg during the exit from the last lift. As with the technical program, many people could not understand why G&G's marks in the free skate were so high. On the overall highlights tape described earlier, the host summed up the event by saying, "The judges gave the gold to G&G, with M&D winning the silver, and bronze to the Canadians." The crowd gave the only standing ovation of the night to M&D. Tamara Moskvina, coach of M&D, replied: "Some pairs get the marks, others get the renown."
The men's portion of the competition tape includes an excerpt of Brian Boitano's (USA) technical program, including an outstanding tano triple lutz. There's also excerpts of Victor Petrenko (UKR) and Kurt Browning's (CAN) technical programs. You'll get to see the complete free skates of bronze medalist Philippe Candeloro (FRA), silver medalist Elvis Stojko (CAN) and gold medalist Aleksei Urmanov (RUS).
The ice dancing competition includes bronze medalists Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's (GBR) complete original dance with two perfect marks. There's an excerpt of silver medalists Maya Usova and Alexandr Zhulin's (RUS) free dance, and the complete free dance by gold medalists Oksana Gritshuck and Yevgeny Platov (RUS).
The final tape in the gift set is the 1994 Winter Olympics Figure Skating Exhibition Highlights. It includes performances by Philippe Candeloro, Susanna Rahkamo and Petri Kokko (FIN), Surya Bonaly (FRA), Victor Petrenko, M&D, B&E, Aleksei Urmanov, Nancy Kerrigan, G&G, Oksana Bayul, an encore of Oksana Bayul with Victor Petrenko, and Torvill and Dean in a reprise of "Bolero."
There are a few disappointments with this tape. I would have liked to have had Oksana Bayul's complete technical program, as well as the complete technical program and free skate of M&D. It's unfortunate that these fine competitive performances were so heavily edited. Therefore, I'm only giving this item four stars.』

This one I would say use for tent tie-outs, and it helped me keep my "plant press" clamped, for college. Definitely only up to "Hiking boot shoe lace", at best. The carabiner style may take 2 mm thicker line, but is about a 1/3 bigger in over-all size. These are like 50 cent pieces in your pocket. Watch your sizes with the "Figure 9s" and definitely handy for utilizing regularly. It only gets a two because of the microfiber sides and back which does create the smoothest silhouette of any bra I've owned. If you're a 36C or larger, I would definately forgo this bra! If you need the 150/224 pages of professional athlete anecdotes, then this book is for you. If, like most athletes, you don't have time to sit and read fluff, find another book.』

While the anecdotes presented by the author are amusing, they provide little to no substance. Often, they are redundant to the point where it seems the author is beating the stain where the dead horse used to be. Each chapter ends with a short 1-sentence summary. In my opinion, the book could easily be condensed to only the chapter headings and the 1-sentence summaries, although it would be much less entertaining that way. The 1-liners do contain good information, but, unfortunately, much of it is what I would consider common sense.
Unless you can relate to baseball and other American sports, don't bother picking up this book. Most of the anecdotes are from the world of baseball.
That said, the book is a very easy read. I do not question the author's abilities as a sports psychologist. I mean, look at the naked chick on the cover! SCORE! So I get this home and guess what? It's not about "Paradise Hotel" or any TV show for that matter. Even worse, I can't make heads or tails of this nonsense. The words look like they're in English, but it reads like Chinese. I don't know who this "John Milton" is, but he sounds like a guy from special ed who was allowed to write a book and get it published because people felt sorry for him or something. A total waste of time and money.』
(The Paradise Within) 『"Paradise Lost" by John Milton is the definitive English epic poem (even if it does not always read like one). Much more a dramatic tragedy, Milton's extension of the biblical story of the Fall of both Satan and mankind is timeless. For while Milton may have woven the politics of his own time in regards to tyrannical kings and their heroic counterparts into the battle between heaven and hell, it is a situation that lends itself to any century.
Many critics have often thought the 'problem' with "Paradise Lost" was the fact that Satan seems like the epic hero - the reader immediately begins identifying himself with Satan and rooting for him in his fight against God, an uneasy feeling to be sure. However, as the course of the poem unfolds, Satan's true tragic nature reveals itself and the reader can marvel in Milton's keen ability to bring to life Heaven, Hell, and Paradise (the Garden of Eden). The epic begins in Hell with the fallen angel now known as Satan rousing his troops into further rebellion against God, but the only action they can take is to pollute his newfound paradise and its brand new inhabitants, Adam and Eve. Satan undertakes the journey to spy out the land and learn how to tempt these two to sin. And while he is successful in his attempt to do so, it is a victory that gains Satan no glory, since he does not understand that he can never truly win against God.
Milton set out to answer the question of what (or who) caused Adam and Eve to sin, tracing some of the blame away from Satan and examining the relationship between Adam and Eve in the garden. Milton perhaps raises more questions than he does offer any answers, but that is partly what makes "Paradise Lost" a mirror that still reflects today. Milton includes numerous classical allusions that readers of his day would be familiar with, as well as biblical accounts (including apocryphal works) to flesh out the barebones structure of the biblical account in Genesis. While parts of the poem can be tedious (especially the seemingly somewhat unnecessary books 11 and 12), "Paradise Lost" is a true masterpiece of literature that should be required reading for everyone, regardless of any religious preferences, for at its heart it is an examination of what it means to be.』
(Too dense) 『First, let me state that I am not a fan of poetry. I find the way it obscures meaning and ebroiders every last thought in metaphor and simile to be frustrating and distracting. I'm so busy trying to figure out what each line means that I forget where I am in the overall scheme of things.
After making my way through The Oddysey, Beowulf and the Divine Comedy, I thought I could handle Milton's Paradise Lost. I was wrong.
I make it a personal mission that try to I finish every book I start. In the last 10 years, I can remember having failed in this only 4 times: - On The Origin of Species (Charles Darwin); - The Republic (Plato); - The Four-Gated City (Doris Lessing); and - Paradise Lost by John Milton.
My major criticisms include the following:
- Sentences are drawn out to intolerable length, stacked with metaphor upon metaphor, until I get halfway down the page and I've forgotten how the sentence started! - Although stated at the start of the book that rhyme was deliberately avoided, I found the absence of any rhyme reduced the poetic impact for me. - It was hard to fall into the metre of the verse, which made it more difficult for me to get into the flow of the tale (possibly related to the lack of rhyme stated above). - The decriptions were so flowery and interwoven that I often found that what I thought was a decription of one entity was in fact two or more!
In the end, I just couldn't do it.
To be fair though, of the small section I read (I got to the end of Book III I think) there were a few passages which were clear enough that I was able to appreciate the beauty of the language. Also, I appreciated the way Milton attempted to characterise the War in Heaven and its aftermath. Such a critical foundation of Judeo-Christian theology is given short shrift in the Bible and other works; giving it some depth was a valiant effort. But there weren't enough of the good parts to keep me engaged, more's the pity.
This may be a cornerstone of English literature, but it wasn't for me. If you enjoy thick, dense poetry, and apocryphal theology, then enjoy with my blessing. It was too much for me.』

Powerful Morphing Tools
Morphing Tool Add a whole new level of detail to your Poser 7 scenes using new brush-like morphing tools! The new Create tab on the Morphing Tool palette provides powerful interactive controls for creating your own custom morph targets. Easily "paint" dimples, moles or creases on your figures with simple strokes, just like you would with any brush tool. Use custom morph targets to create even more dynamic facial expressions; to change the appearance of bodies; to pull conforming clothing out past protruding body parts; to improve cloth simulation results; and for a wide variety of other uses as well.
Using the new morphing tools, selected areas or single points of the mesh can be pushed or pulled, smoothed or restored. Start by selecting the size of the area that you want to modify using the Radius control - small for detail work and large for broader changes. Choose from five brush styles that vary in falloff (how the change blends toward the edge of the selected area), from a very soft brush that blends gradually toward the edge to a crisp brush that affects the entire area the same way.
You can also define the magnitude of your changes, whether they accumulate or cap at a certain size, and if they act on a specific point or stroke like a brush tool. Make your changes either in surface mode, which will modify the mesh along the direction of surface normals, or in screen mode, which will allow deformations in any direction you wish.
When you are done, save your morphed Poser 7 figures into the library for later use. You don't have to be an expert to take your scenes to a whole new level, using Poser's intuitive morph target creation tools!

The best thing is if you have plantar fasciitis - the straps underneath give you a great deal of support. The other half of the solution, though, is an Aircast A60. This is great for walking around - but doesn't offer the requisite support that the McDavid brace does for playing. The problem with the McDavid is that it's a bit much for non-sports use. I now have both the McDavid and Aircast and am very happy.』

My only complaint is that for the price, more then just one clone trooper should have been included. What's the point of storming the enemy with just one guy? You will need to purchase additional troopers to make it more fun and individual clone troopers are available at a hefty price (and rising fast). There is also a barc speeder as an additional vehicle. My sons were not impressed with it when placed alongside the massive tank-like vehicle. The back flips open to reveal plenty of storage and a place to hide your clone trooper army (says it holds 20 figures). The wheels are sturdy enough and it held up well under rough play by a group of young boys. However, I am not so sure about the longevity of the attachments that stick out on top. There is a gunner that shoots out missiles (they appear to be the same weapons from other Star Wars sets which is nice). The vehicle emits sounds from the Clone Wars and I'm thinking the three batteries needed are not included.
