Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review
(Awesome movie and great music)
『There's nothing I can say positive about this movie that the other reviews haven't. From 'He's only 14!' to the last frame of Dewey clutching his chest, this movie rocks. The comedy is crazy in parts, yet subtle in others.

The one thing that really stood out at me, is the number of running jokes in this movie. Dewey's wife says he'll fail no matter how much he accomplishes, he tries each new drug in the bathroom, his music changes after each new drug, he's never home but has dozens of kids, he busts up bathrooms each time he gets peed off, his dad keeps saying the wrong kid died, he mispronounces the first two drug names 'reefers' and 'cok caine', and there's another one or two I found but can't think of.

This is a great movie, and the best comedy I've seen in years.』

(Was surprised I liked it so much.)
『Warning, mild spoilers ahead! (Very mild, don't think they will spoil anything)

I bought this (or rather the bilingual Japanese version) from Amazon.co.jp, which is why it doesn't list me as having purchased it through Amazon.com. I bought this in the hopes that I could share it with students in a university Media class that I teach. I didn't have much in the way of expectations, mainly because I knew next to nothing about it before buying it (I don't know if it was even released theatrically here), but I found that I really liked this movie. I never thought I would like a film where not 1, but 2 people get halved with machetes -- I never, ever, ever, ever, never, never thought I would say that. But there you go, never ever say never.

What is this movie? A parody of Walk the Line? A genre by genre comedic dance of the history of American popular music? A tour de force for John C. Reilly? I think it is a bit of all of these things. I think one of the most important things about this film is that it shows that Reilly is much, much more than a sidekick for Will Ferrell. He is a genuine talent. I loved the fact that after the elementary school aged Dewey Cox, it is always Reilly, with no intermediate stage actors, playing the character. Somehow I found it really funny when the 6 foot 4 , 40 something Reilly, was playing 14 year old Cox asking his mom not to embarrass him in front of his friends.

Much like Jerry Lee Lewis, Cox gets a twelve year old girlfriend, but she is played by a 30 something year old actress. Utterly absurd (but not in the derogatory sense). Like many good movies, the supporting cast makes a big difference. Tim Meadows, SNL alum (the Ladies Man) was very good as the drummer who was with Cox since the beginning of his career, and was his gateway into spiraling decline by enabling his drug use, running the gambit as enabler from pot in the 50s, to Viagra in the modern day. How about Harold Ramis (I didn't recognize him until his 2nd or 3rd appearance) as a Hasidic record producer, or David Krumolz (Charlie from Numb3rs) as long time agent. Jack Black as Paul McCartney? Frank Muniz (Malcolm, form Malcolm in the Middle) as Buddy Holiday? This film was fun from a "Who the hell is that!?!?" name that cameo, perspective. --Please don't complain that Jack Black has almost no physical resemblance to Paul McCartney, that and his accent is spoofalicious, it is part of the gag.

Speaking of which, one of the cool things about this film was its effective use of the running gag. It is so easy to overuse or misuse such things, but from Meadows continuous admonition of "You don't want any of this!", just before he pulls Cox into a new form of drug abuse, to Cox's tendency to tear sinks out of bathroom walls as a metaphor for despair, to his father's horrible mantra, "The wrong son died!", somehow they seemed to play all these jokes pretty well. This film was all about hyperbole. It really seemed to capture so much of American music, and troubled musicians, by showing intentionally exaggerated to the breaking point versions of different character types.

I can't understand the 1 star reviews given to this film, but I guess you can't argue taste, perhaps especially so in terms of humor. Either you get it or you don't. I think I got it. His wife, 13 or 14 years old at the time, already with a several kids (though remember, the actress is in her 30s), using as her telephone sign off, "I love you, you're going to fail!," or Cox not realizing that bigamy was illegal ("What, even if your famous?") was pretty genuinely funny.

I hope that this film makes a lot of money as a dvd, gains a following, and maybe cult status, because apparently it didn't get much notice in the theaters. I really want the powers that be to be encouraged to allow more, similarly creative stuff, and for John C. Reilly (and Harold Ramis, and Tim Meadows, and the other creative folks too numerous to mention) to be in a lot more things. This is not a Ferrell&Reilly comedy, minus Ferrell. This is its own, pretty cool thing that should be judged on its own (in my opinion) very high merits.

(Great movie, bad case)
『The movie is great, and it looks especially good on blu-ray. The only problem was the case was broken, the top left corner was cracked which keeps it from closing. I want to say that it must be a shipping problem, but I looked inside the box and I could not find the broken piece of the case which means that it must have been broken before it was put in the box.』

(A surprise funny film)
『I saw trailers of the film and didn't think I would like it. But. John C.Reilly has hit the mark this time, as most of his work has. It will have you in stitches. A funny title as well as a fun, funny film.』

(Very.Good.Product)
『I like this movie, because it is very funny, and I have seen the actor who work on this movie before in other movies.

『Movie DVD』
『The Pixar-like roll of Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin,Knocked Up,Superbad) continues with another sure-fire hit. In charting the meteoric rise, catastrophic fall and Lazarus-like rise of rocker Dewey Cox,Walk Hardparodies the classic Hollywood bio-pic, cashing in mostly onWalk the Line. John C. Reilly, one of Hollywood's most solid character actors, makes the most of his Golden Globe-nominated star turn as Dewey, whose road to stardom is paved with a childhood tragedy that claims the life of his prodigiously talented brother ("The wrong kid died," is his father's mantra), instant stardom (his first record is a hit just 35 minutes after it was recorded), sex and drugs, and the inevitable "dark (effen) period" that leads him to rehab. Reilly gets solid backup from current and formerSaturday Night Livealumni, including Kirsten Wiig as his incredibly fertile first wife who has no faith in his musical aspirations ("You're never going to make it," she cheerily ends one phone call); Tim Meadows, never better, as Dewey's drummer, who, in one of the film's best scenes, does a poor job of dissuading him from trying marijuana); and Chris Parnell as his bass player. Jenna Fischer leaves Pam back atThe Officeas Darlene, Dewey's virtuous duet partner. Hilarious cameos giveWalk Harda great "Hey!" factor: Hey, that's Frankie Muniz as Buddy Holly. Hey, that's "Kenneth" from30 Rock. Hey, there's Jack Black and Paul Rudd as--no kidding--Paul McCartney and John Lennon revealing "a rift in the Beatles." Some of the jokes are obvious (come on; the guy's last name is Cox), others inspired. But the decades-spanning music, echoing the styles of gritty Johnny Cash, romantic Roy Orbison, obtuse Bob Dylan, trippy Brian Wilson, and even a bit of anachronistic punk rock, is as pitch perfect and affectionately observed as inThe Rutles,This Is Spinal TapandA Mighty Wind.Walk Hardearns its R-rating, particularly for a sure-to-be-talked-about scene of hotel-room debauchery. But: Hilarious? Outrageous? Twisted? To quote the title of one of Dewey's hit songs, "Guilty as Charged."--Donald Liebenson

On the DVD
Though an unaccountable box office disappointment,Walk Hardis poised for discovery and cult status on DVD. You'd think the film had pretty much exhausted all the puns and double-entendres you could get out of Dewey Cox's last name, but the Elvis-inspired "A Christmas Song from Dewey Cox," the "Cox Sausage Commercial" and "The Real Dewey Cox," which are among this two-disc set's extra features, manages to get even more mileage out of that juvenile joke. Speaking of which, there is a "cockumentary" devoted to actor Tyler Nilson, who provides the film with its most shocking laugh during the hotel orgy scene, TheUnbearably Long, Self-Indulgent Director's Cutcontains, ahem, extended footage of that scene and features the deleted setups for some of the theatrical cut's more inexplicable gags (a deleted montage reveals just how Dewey and band member Theo wound up in bed together). Better than a gag reel is the "Line-O-Rama," a hit-and-miss compilation of improv outtakes. Full song performances give this film's Oscar-worthy music its due.The Daily Show's John Hodgman gets "The Last Word" in a celebrity profile spoof that was originally broadcast on Comedy Central. With a more traditional "Making of" featurette and entertaining audio commentary by writer Judd Apatow, director Jake Kasdan, and star John C. Reilly,Walk Hardwalks even harder on DVD.--Donald Liebenson

(Feldman Continued)
『I generally love Lang's work. Typically, his compositions grab hold of me and refuse to relenquish their grasp until the very end. He writes in minimalist fashion, but has far more in common it seems with Morton Feldman than Glass, Reich or Riley, and for my money (and musical taste), he and Annie Gosfield are the two formost original thinker-doers in modern classical compositon. They're not simply differnt for the sake of being such, but their work is clever, beautiful, mysterious and haunting. All of those terms apply to the works on this disk, and Sentieri Selvaggi, an Italian version of Bang On A Can, is obviouly in close spiritual harmony with the composer and on the mark in every moment it seems. This disk along with his "Passing Measures", holds a special place in my collection. I also highly recommend Gosfield's "Flying Sparks and Heavy Machinery" and "Burnt Ivory and Loose Wires" as well as any Morton Feldman stuff curently in print. Enjoy.』

(Mindblowing)
『I listened to the track "Sweet Air" on WNYE 93.9FM in NYC and was blown away. David's music is enveloping! I was completely overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of his counterpoint harmonies. I absolutely had to have this CD.

Do your mind, body and soul a favor and listen to this CD!』

(In a perfect world this would be average)
『3 1/2

It is a testament to this man's indie-pop songwriting finesse, that perhaps his least popular major studio offering, which has been criticized of inconsistencies, remains a pretty solidly engaging disc. It's ok not to call the influential arranger super-unique; Smith's gifts were for taking what had influenced him so profoundly and molding it in clever and exciting new ways. Few would be able to make derivative sound so fresh and inspired.』

(The Revolver of our time)
『There is no doubt in my mind that this sits at the same height as The Beatles' greatest work and should be listened to by everyone who likes them. While it is admittedly much more down in the lyrical content, the melodies are sublime and joyous in a way. I started out with Either/Or but this is much, much better, and next I'll be getting his self titled.

Regardless of whether you like his early albums, here Elliot Smith is at the peak of his compositional powers and you should definitely listen to this album.』

(Nothing much to speak of)
『What most people will find here, is a collection of marginally depression, hookless indy pop. After a time, the songs largely start to run together and sound the same. Not a bad album by any means, but certainly not worthy of the praise it receives in this listener's opinion.

Trust me, you can skip this one.』

(Early Lo- Fi to a More Lavish Multi-layered Release....)
『Steven Paul Smith was born on August 6, 1969 in Omaha. He later changed the name Steven to Elliott. He felt it sounded less "jock-like."
I do believe Elliott Smith had a really amazing if not sad and lonely kind of voice. I can feel a bit more uplifting type of mood coming from Elliott Smith's Figure 8, his best and last studio record before he died. Ever since the end of his band Heatmiser, his solo work became more personal and less abrasive. It's hard to imagine at one point he was part of just another small punk/grunge band, who not many have heard of.
Many would prefer "Either/Or." Which seems optimistic at times, but kind of sad to me. At this time few singer/songwriters could match Elliott's level of intensity through lo-fi "folk-punk" intimacy. That release sparked interest in the director of Good Will Hunting, Gus Van Sant- who used some of Elliott's songs for his picture. They met while Elliott lived in Portland. Also this exposure proppelled Elliott Smith to major-label status from Kill Rock Stars to Dreamworks. And then came XO in 1998. And Figure 8 in 2000. In my opinion this is his best. It flourishes with rich, multi-layered and more lush tracks. Not as intimate as his earlier solo works w/ the exception of "Everything Means Nothing to Me." This does seem happier though, at least compared to his other works. Definately one of the best solo albums and one of my favorites of this millenium. A wonderful timeless album from one of the better singer/songwriters after those "grunge era" days. My favorites here include: "Son of Sam"- "Junkbond Trader" -"Stupidity Tries" - "Easy Way Out" - "In the Lost&Found" -(for this song Elliott uses the same Abbey Road piano Paul McCartney played on "Penny Lane")
Elliott Smith has always been a long time Beatles fan. Even covered their song "Because"- which is on a import of Figure 8. I really do feel he approaches a kind of greatness w/ this almost perfect solo work. I just wish he was still alive creating more.
It's just really sad the way Elliott Smith died. Two stab wounds in his chest from a kitchen knife. And I believe the coroner at the time never came to a conclusion whether it was a homicide or a suicide. His death was on October 21 2003.
I give Figure 8- 5 stars. It is my favorite Elliott Smith album, if you haven't heard Elliott Smith before you really should give this a listen. Or pick up "Either/Or" if you like a softer sound, but both are essential from him.』

(Musical masterpiece)
『I would agree with Patrick Burnett's comments from 5 years ago. I recently ended a relationship and Elliott has been on repeat since the summer. His music fits perfectly with those moments where you feel like there is nothing left. But in a way, the beauty behind his music lifts your spirit like nothing else. "Everything Means Nothing To Me" was the first song I ever heard from Elliott just last year and it is a small portion of the brilliance found throughout this whole album.

The acoustically amazing "Somebody I Used to Know" and "I Better Be Quiet Now", the very Beatlesque "Pretty Mary K" and "Happiness" are just a few of the standouts in my mind. "Bye" is such a haunting album-ender that gives me chills everytime I hear the echo of the piano.

"Figure 8" has such a wide variety of sound that only a musical genius like Elliott Smith could create. His soft angelic voice along with beautiful melodies make this an album that will forever be labeled "perfection" in my mind. Rest in peace Elliott, your spirit lives on.』

『The story of Elliott Smith is well known now: Shy and reclusive indie rocker soars to a Hollywood soundstage and major-label contract. His fans gasped in collective horror when he took a bow at the 1998 Oscars, his hand clasped by Celine Dion. He seemed far too fragile to survive among the sharks and vultures on the corner of Hollywood and Vine. But as his subsequent albumsXOand nowFigure 8show, Smith has weathered the spotlight successfully and is moving ahead with self-assured grace. The beauty ofFigure 8is that it encompasses Smith's musical virtues, from the stark and wispy tunes of his lo-fi beginnings onRoman Candleto the orchestrated, Beatlesesque pomp and circumstance of later work to the intimate and sometimes painful nature of his live shows.Figure 8's opener, "Son of Sam," is as good as anything Smith has ever crafted, its soaring melody buoyed with lush instrumentation and a tin-pan-alley piano romp. "Happiness" is vintage Smith, its lyrics belying the title. But best of all are "Everything Reminds Me of Her" and "Everything Means Nothing to Me," which capture the dichotomies of Smith's music. The first is a lovely, delicate little tune--just Smith's wavering voice, a plucked guitar, and the plaintive lyrics of unabashed longing. The second is a layered soundscape, heavily produced, with washes of music covering a repeated lyrical line. One is direct, naked, and honest; the other is slippery, distant, and rational. These are the yin and yang of Smith's music, and it's the friction between the two--or, more accurately, the wreckage from one obdurate truth bashing up against the other--that makesFigure 8resonate with such devastating power.--Tod Nelson
『(2-LP set) His second release for the Dreamworks label, and fifth overall,Figure 8is a lush and beautifully melancholy collection of pop songs. Gone is the intimate lo-fi feel of his Kill Rock Stars albums, replaced by intricate arrangements and orchestration. One gets the feeling that the sound of his earlier work was not by choice but by economic necessity and Smith was now, with a major label budget and backing, able to establish himself as a pop craftsman on par with Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney. Deluxe 180 gram vinyl reissue.』
『Japanese edition of the indie rock singer/songwriter's 2000 release with two exclusive bonus tracks 'Because'&'Figure 8'. 18 tracks in all including the single 'Son Of Sam'. Digipak.』
『Japanese Version featuring Two Bonus Tracks: Beatles Cover 'Because' from the 'American Beauty' Soundtrack, and 'Figure 8'.』

(A must see !)
『I loved this video! you could definately tell that the pressure of compitition was off because the skating was brilliant.
Sasha Cohen and Alexei Yagudin were my favorites.Sale and Pelletier also did a really fun number.if you can get this and watch it,I definately say go for it!』

(Great Skating with Ultra-Political Editing)
『The Olympics are the premier event in figure skating, and although I recorded all of the '02 Olympic figure skating events live on my VCR, I purchased this offering because I desired to have the best possible picture quality for the best skates.

This tape includes Olympic exhibition performances by: Todd Eldredge (USA) [highlights only], Sasha Cohen (USA), Timothy Goebel (USA), Michelle Kwan (USA), Jamie Sale and David Pelletier (CAN), Evgeni Plushenko (RUS), Irina Lobacheva and Ilia Averbukh (RUS), Irina Slutskaya (RUS), Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Siharulidze (RUS), Alexei Yagudin (RUS), Sarah Hughes (USA), and Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat (FRA).

While I very much enjoyed the performances by the skaters, I found NBC's live coverage of the exhibition to be lacking in production values. For instance, NBC does not routinely provide the name of the music used by the skaters. This tape has been edited from the live broadcast. The edits don't provide much lead-in before a routine, and they don't let you stay in the moment when it finishes. There are some portions of this tape that were scripted after the live performance and edited into this final product, and they are of dubious value.

The most noteworthy thing to warn prospective customers about this tape is skating politics: favoritism and nationalism, as well as reading between the lines. For instance, one would think that the Ladies Gold Medalist, Sarah Hughes, would have received the most amount of fanfare for her convincing victory. Not so. Michelle Kwan, despite finishing third, receives the most accolades throughout. I always thought that when you win the Olympics that you are considered to be the best--but apparently I was wrong.

Here's the segue to Kwan's exhibition skate after Timothy Goebel's:"While winning bronze was a somewhat unexpected thrill for Goebel, it was a completely unexpected disappointment for Michelle Kwan. Kwan's figure skating accomplishments ranked her among the best to ever lace up a pair of skates: four time world champion, six time US national champion, and 1998 Olympic silver medalist. Michelle was as close to unbeatable as the sport of figure skating had ever known. But when she fell in the long program, her gold medal dreams were dashed. Displaying dignity in defeat, Michelle showed the class and grace of a champion that she'll always be remembered as."When Kwan finished her"Fields of Gold"routine, Scott Hamilton remarked:"We watch with a heavy heart. So many people wanted her to have that medal, but she won the bronze. She's been on the Olympic podium twice, and that shows great longevity and wonderful integrity. What a champion."

It's true that there was a time when Michelle Kwan was considered unbeatable. Think back to the day when President Bush was inaugurated. On that January evening in 2001, the US Nationals Ladies free skate was broadcast on ABC. In the hour time slot immediately preceding it, ABC showed a taped skating special called"Michelle Kwan: Princess on Ice,"where Kwan appeared with a number of Olympic gold medalists, including Ilia Kulik, Dorothy Hamill and Katarina Witt. The special ended with Kwan talking about her prospects for Olympic gold at Salt Lake. Apparently it was a foregone conclusion that Kwan would win at Nationals over Sarah and the other US ladies, or they would have found a different time slot to air Kwan's special in. If Hughes competitive desires weren't already intense enough, then I should think that this insult would have been sufficient for her to make a pact with herself to do whatever it takes to make sure that people take her a little more seriously at future competitions.

Later in 2001, Kwan participated in the"Champions on Ice"tour, performing to"This Time Around"by Linda Eder. The words are most interesting, including these phrases,"This time around--no second places; I'm showing aces--I'll win."Sarah participated in the tour as well, and I can only imagine what she thought of the bravado of Kwan's routine. Kwan became increasingly inconsistent during the fall of 2001. Sarah beat Kwan at Skate Canada. Irina Slutskaya beat Kwan many times leading up to the Olympics, including the last major event they faced each at beforehand. By this time, Michelle Kwan was far from"unbeatable,"as NBC claims.

Sarah skated two exhibition routines, both of which are included here. The first is a broadway medley, and the second is a tribute to the victims of the 9-11 attack. At the end of the tribute number during the live performance, commentator Sandra Bezic remarked,"I'm sure that when she first choeographed this number several months ago as a New Yorker, she didn't imagine that she would be performing it as Olympic champion."Scott Hamilton replied,"What an unexpected gift she was to this Olympic games. Olympic champion, Olympic gold medalist: Sarah Hughes."After NBC's editing process was completed, the routine ended up with Hamilton simply stating,"What an unexpected gift she was to this Olympic games."After stating what a champion Kwan was after earning the bronze medal, I find it rather unusual that NBC proceeded to edit out Bezic's comments entirely, along with Hamilton's final phrase"Olympic champion, Olympic gold medalst: Sarah Hughes."Is this tape political? You bet. Does NBC show favoritism? You bet. Do you want to buy this tape? Only you can answer that. I enjoy the skating routines on it, but I do not value the spin and slant that NBC has put on things.』

(Editing Weakens Great Video)
『Yes, the editing of the 2002 olympic figure skating exhibition weakens the tape considerably. It's not just that the ends of exhibitions are edited out; so are the beginnings, when the skater first skates out in front of the audience. This, too, is part of what gives the viewer the feeling of the olympics.』

(Great skating, but..)
『.. as previously stated, the feeling of the video is edited and the performances cut off at the end, missing the sometimes loud and lengthy ovations from the crowd.

Fortunately, most of the performances in the exhibition are included in their entirety. Michelle Kwan's performance to Eva Cassidy's haunting remake of Sting's "Fields of Gold" is probably the most beatiful and emotional skating performance I've ever seen, and it's included here. Hearing Scott Hamilton's voice breaking as he's reacting to the performance was heartfelt and probably representative of most skating fans.

But there is much more here - the amazing Russian male skaters (Plushenko and Yagudin) and the pairs (Canada vs. Russia), Timothy Goebel etc. Lots of great skating and heartfelt performances.. if only the judges would get with the times and let the skaters use lyric-inclusive music in competition, skating's appeal would increase tenfold.

...』

(Good for what it shows)
『Physical quality of tape and sound is excellent. Disappointed in that more exhibitions not shown. Didn't feel "Olympic atmosphere" - no fan reaction shown especially something like Michelle's Fields of Gold performance terriffic but warmth of crowd ignored. If you recorded these live off TV probably have more of Olympic feel. Commercially, I guess it is the only one you're going to be able to buy. NBC paid big bucks for the monopoly so we're stuck with their production -- ain't "free" markets great!?』

『When larry a divorced father who cant seem to keep a job gets a job at the museum of natural history hes assigned as a night guard. However a seemingly easy job turns out to be a wild ride when he finds that an ancient curse has caused the inhabitants of the museum to come to life. Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 04/24/2007 Starring: Ben Stiller Mickey Rooney Run time: 105 minutes Rating: Pg』

An irresistible concept meets computer-generated wonders inNight at the Museum, inspired by a 1993 children's book by Milan Trenc. Ben Stiller stars as Larry Daley, an underachieving inventor waiting for his ship to come in while getting evicted from one apartment after another for lack of funds. Larry's son needs some stability, so the well-meaning ne'er-do-well takes a job as night watchman at New York City's Museum of Natural History. What the soon-to-retire guards (Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs) don't tell him is that an ancient pharaoh's tablet in the museum causes everything on display to come to life at night. Thus, Larry meets representations of Teddy Roosevelt, Attila the Hun, fire-worshipping cavemen, and Roman Empire soldiers, and learns to cope with an excitable T-Rex and man-eating, ancient animals. The film might have left things at that, but an added story element givesNight at the Museumsome extra urgency and excitement, especially for kids: Larry becomes responsible for keeping this nightly miracle going and preventing anything in the museum from dying due to exposure to sunrise. Computer effects, as well as wildly imaginative costumes and makeup, help make the film appeal to the 8-year-old in everyone. Director Shawn Levy (The Pink Panther) works with a hugely talented cast, including Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Ricky Gervais, Carla Gugino, and Steve Coogan. --Tom Keogh

On the DVD

The delightful package of special features onNight at the Museum (Two-Disc Special Edition)logically focuses on the film's many effects and unique needs. Featurettes and little narratives on various niche aspects ofNight's production abound. Among them is "Bringing the Museum to Life," an overview of star Ben Stiller and the rest of the cast's vivid imaginations while they reacted to conditions and characters that were not actually present at the time of shooting. Director Shawn Levy is very much the star in this clip, as it turns out the hands-on filmmaker was unabashed about standing in for such computer-generated creations as Rexy, the T-Rex skeleton that comes to puppyish life in the feature. Levy shines, too, in "Directing 101" (which has more footage of him running around like everything from a horse to a fierce friend of Genghis Khan) and "Fox Movie Channel Presents: Life After Film School," the latter a half-hour segment from the cable channel's ongoing series in which film school students interview folks already in the business. (The Levy show is really a pleasure.) "Monkey Business" takes a look at the training of the little monkey whose character vexes Stiller's overwhelmed hero to an extreme. A blooper reel is full of hilarious gaffes, the best of which finds Stiller and Ricky Gervais pretty much incapable of getting through a single scene without losing it. "Building the Museum" answers the question: Did they actually shoot that thing inside a real museum? (The answer: no, which makes the set even more impressive.) "Historical Threads" takes a look at costumes, while trailers, extended scenes, a commentary track by Levy, and a DVD-ROM game ("Reunite with Rexy") give a viewer lots to do here.--Tom Keogh

(good fit)
『I have purchased this bra prior to this purchase. The shipping was free, thank God cause it took forever!!!! The bra is so perfect, fit shape style, it's a winner!!』

(Best Bra Ever)
『This is the best, most comfortable bra I have ever owned. It has Wacoal quality and great, great fit. I have a smallish back but need large cups. I have always had trouble, but Wacoal always seems to come through. This is even better than usual. The bra is simlply the best. I will be ordering more as soon as I can.』

(Very satisfied)
『I love this product. I read earlier negatives about "made in China." No problem. Quality and fit are excellent. Will purchase more.』

(No Quality Issues)
『Well I agree that this bra may be a bit pricey, but it is worth it for all day comfort and support. Personally I have bought 5 and all mine were made in the Dominican Republic. No quality issue for me. There is no padding or soft cups which I love because there is no need for that with larger cup sizes. The material is smooth so clothes hang nicely. I highly recommend this bra to full figured woman.』

(Perfect bra)
『I went for a bra fitting last year and this is the one that was perfect for me. I'm a DD and never thought an underwire could be comfortable. EVER. This one fits perfectly with the center part actually touching my chest and holding each breast separately as I have never had a bra do before. It totally changed my appearance in clothes and comfort. I have bought 3 of them so I can wear them at home as well. You don't even know it is there. I doubt I ever change from this style, it cannot be better!』
『The Bodysuitsuede Ultra underwire full figure bra has smooth, shaped cups giving great, seamless shape. There is embroidered decoration on the straps and between the cups. Available in larger cup sizes.』

(Worth My Money!)
『Does Belly Bandit really help?
I've only used it with this third pregnancy, so I don't know what I'd say to a first timer - I didn't have so much trouble then. But after my second my muscles were so wrecked because I was HUGE, that I bought the band this time around to give support. I knew I'd gotten my money's worth before I even left the hospital. Although I was using it to help support while my muscles recovered (which it did well), I also got lots of compliments about how great I looked and how quickly I slimmed down, which was a plus! About the time I delivered I had a 42" belly, and I was wearing I size Small band before two weeks went by.

How are the sizing suggestions?
They are pretty right-on. I did need two bands, as they suggest.

Is the Bamboo really worth the extra money?
YES - you can't believe how much nicer it is than the original. I ended up with three bands because I purchased the first 2 on eBay. I got one bamboo and one original in a set (two different sizes). The bamboo is soft like a T-shirt, while the original is much stiffer. I never wore the original and ended up ordering a second bamboo version. I'm not one to spend lots of money just for luxury, but if you're going to buy a band, I'd say its only worth buying the bamboo version.』

『Being earth-friendly never felt so good! The Bamboo Belly Bandit is made for the green mom who will spare no expense for the environment or her comfort. Bamboo Belly Bandit is inherently antibacterial, moisture wicking and is three times more durable than cotton. The moisture wicking characteristic makes it the perfect choice for c sections. Ecological, smart, unbeaten and all together our comfy coziest! The Bamboo Belly Bandit wrap is an abdominal compression binder designed to help you get your body back to its former fabulousness post childbirth. Not only does the Bamboo Belly Bandit help reduce uncomfortable uterine swelling, it aids in decreasing bloating caused by water retention, and gives additional support for Mommys weary legs&back. For you breastfeeding moms, theres a bonus... the Belly Bandit will help you with your posture during feedings, and may help to reduce the all too common back&shoulder pain associated with breastfeeding. Ultimately, the Bamboo Belly Bandit wrap will aid in getting you back to your pre-pregnancy hotness faster than ever!』

(Love this bra!!)
『I have worn this bra every single day since my son was born 4 months ago. It is the most comfortable bra I have ever owned!! I have washed it ALOT since it's the only nursing bra I like enough to wear everyday, and it's held up really well - I wash it by hand in the sink and it seems as new as the day I first put it on, in spite of washing it every few days. The clasps are super easy to use - easy to open and close with one hand (and in the dark, I might add!), which is really great when you're trying to get it open while juggling a hungry baby. I do think the cup sizes run small - I ordered one cup size larger than usual (F instead of DD), although I ordered the same band size I always wear. I cannot say enough good things about this bra!! It is a little expensive, but is absolutely worth every penny - I'm just about to order a second one so that I won't have to wear the same one every day...』

(Great Bra)
『I love this bra. I'm nursing my 6-month old son (and also nursed my first for 18 months) and this is by far the best nursing bra I've found. I'm a 38DD(E), so I need good support. I love the way this bra shapes and lifts like a standard bra, without being too bulky. The material is thin and lightweight and doesn't have a pattern that will show through clothing like some other nursing bras I've used. It's pretty easy to open and close the clasps one handed, which can be essential with holding a wiggly, hungry baby. Great bra!』

(Good bra, but runs on the small side)
『I've had this bra now for about a month and so far it's working out well. Seems to be good quality and as comfortable as you'll probably get at this point. My only complaint is that they seem to run on the small side--I'd say about 2 sizes too small. If you can find a store that sells these bras, I'd highly recommend trying them on. Then ordering through Amazon since it's so much cheaper. I ended up having to pay almost $30 for ground shipping through FedEx to send back the 2 that I originally bought.』

(Cup Size Runs Small)
『This bra is very comfortable. I like the wide straps, and it offers adequate support. I usually wear a B or C cup, depending on the bra, but with this bra the C cup was too.』

(The Best Nursing Bra)
『As a mother breastfeeding her third child, I can honestly say this is the best nursing bra I have found. I ordered the black bra, and it's attractive, very supportive, and truly comfortable. The straps are quite wide and soft, alleviating much of the pressure on my shoulders. I wear a 34 H, and I feel confident and well supported in this bra, which is a true first with a nursing bra. Also, the cup clasps are easy to use, yet very secure. As with all bras, spending more upfront saves money in the long run. I would recommend doing a Google search for Anita's sizing charts before you order. The band size on this bra runs large, so I ordered one size smaller than I would normally wear and got a perfect fit. Happy nursing!』
『In specially developed microfiber that's decorated with a pretty jaquard pattern, this underwire Anita nursing bra has seamless preformed cups with the patented KwikKlip system that allows easy opening. The width of the back increases in larger sizes.』

(This design is embarrassing.)
『This is without a doubt the worst design I have experienced from Lego. It's so poor I'm embarrassed for them. I was a faithful Lego lover in the 80's when I was a child, and am now enjoying them again with my son. We have nearly every Lego Star Wars and Indiana Jones set and most of them are decently thought out constructions, this one however, is not (the Temple of Doom is a poor design too, stay away from that set also).

Many of the large pieces and even sections are held together by just one or two Lego dots, if you gently lift and rotate it to an upside down position, or attempt to carefully transport it, there is little chance it will hold together. You may have been lucky to have gotten pieces that fit slightly more tightly than our set, when held upside down ours definitely slips apart. My son was not able to put this set together, and I enjoyed putting it together about as much as I have enjoyed constructing tedious models.

This set is not designed to the standard that I expect Lego to maintain. There is a reason why Lego is more expensive than Mega Blocks or any other Lego impostor, and it's because they have maintained a high standard over the years. This set is not at that standard. The only good thing about this set is that it does come with a lot of figures. The catapult is pretty good also.

Unless your child absolutely must have these figures I suggest spending your money on another set.』

『Purchased as a gift for the grandson...he loves this stuff. He is 8 years old and puts the kits together the first time...just like the instructions state...then he trys out different designs after that and really enjoys the Lego kits. Better than a computer game because it makes him think...design....and see his results on something he can hold in his hand.』

(Screature review)
『My son loves this toy. He wanted to review it to tell everyone how much fun it is. Just keep in mind that some work from the reviews we've read and some don't work well. Ours works perfectly so it is great. From my son, "It squirts the water over 20 feet. It's the coolest toy ever." Maybe not exactly twenty feet, but pretty darn far.

(Mattel Screature)
『I purchased this "Screature" for my four year-old grandson's birthday. He was a little leery at first about the snapping mouth but quickly overcame his trepidation when his three older brothers started playing with it! They love the snapping mouth, the warning neck frill and the squirting water. My only complaint is the extremely small water reservoir. It requires constant refilling. Other than that, it appears to be a hit!』

(Fun!)
『I got one for my shop/office, and enjoy it. A few notes:

1. When you get it, it is in a demo mode and will NOT squirt. All you have to do is to turn it completely ON (switch is on the foot) and it will increase its behaviors, go to sleep mode, squirt, etc. (I suspect some low scores came from people who did not know this.)

2. The squirting tank is pretty small, and the volume of each squirt is pretty small, but it shoots a good 10+ feet with a little force. If you use it in an office or someplace with nice clothes and lots of paper, you may want to keep the tank empty... or put up a good warning sign!

3. This is a reasonably tough toy, but it is more geared for 'tabletop play' than 'sandbox play'.

By the way- this thing just BEGS to be hacked. Voice recording/playback module (it yawns when it wakes up. I want it to play the theme from Jurassic Park!), glowing eyes, dancing to music (a Screature/iDog hybrid?) and more!』

(Screature stinks)
『Just returned and bought a second Screature as the first one wouldn't squirt water. Well, the second one doesn't either!!! Sounds and acts different from the first one - but obviously works just as well. Save the $$$ for something else - 5yr old says it's still cool - but I'm not happy about buying something that doesn't work from the get-go!』

(favorite birthday gift)
『This toy is lots of fun for the dinosaur lover in your family. It stands about a foot high and has 2 sensors: one on the nose and the other on it's back. The toy is programmed to do different things based on which sensors are activated. If you press the sensor on the back, it's like you are patting Screature. It sort of purrs. If you press both sensors together, it's like you are tickling screature and he laughs. Pressing the sensor on the nose though activites his "angry" mode. The nose sensor also detects movement near it's face so you don't actually have to touch screature to get "snapped" at. The dinosaur will also sort of rear back and unfold it's wings and spit water out. This is a fun trick on an unsuspecting friend!

The toy seems well made and easy to activate. Sensors are pretty sensitive so you don't have to press them hard to make Screature move. The dinosaur itself is stationary so it doesn't walk or jump.

The battery component and the water tank are on the bottom under the feet. The battery component is screwed in so no worries with young kids getting into batteries. The water tank is small but really easy to fill.

Great birthday gift! definitely recommend』

Can you master Screature, or will you be his prey? Lifelike and realistic with ferocious sounds, Screature uses an infrared sensor to sense and attack his prey with your help. If you can control Screature, he will respond loyally to your petting, but if you pet him in the wrong place, Screature attacks! Set him in room guard mode and Screaturewill guard all your prized treasures! Screature is a mean little predator with a big appetite. Try me, open tray package. 3x 'AA' batteries included, with minor assembly required.』

(Mom reviewing for 9yr old)
『My 9 yr old son is very much into Star Wars Legos right now and saved up earnings to buy this. Like all legos, how durable can it really be? While he put it together, I found I had to go back and fix/correct a couple things because it effected the overall sturdiness and he wasn't precise when originally putting it together. And as his lego stuff is all over his room (and you can't fold it up and put it away easily)it does get knocked a bit and inadvertently stepped on by his younger brother. So we have to backtrack and fix. It's educational in the sense that he uses his imagination when he's got all his lego stuff out.』

『My nine year old son had to have this, and after raiding his savings account and a few extra dollars from me, he was able to purchase it. It maybe took him five hours to build (because he would start play with what he had just put together before going on to the next page.). He had a great time building it and loves to play with it. It is a hundred times better then the Lego Imperial Star Destroyer for play with and does not fail apart like the Destroyer.』

As seen in the film Star Wars: The Clone Wars -- in which the heroic Jedi Knights try to restore peace to the Galaxy as more and more members of the Republic fall under the influence of the Dark Side -- the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser provides an action-packed narrative setting to inspire imaginative play.

Every detail of the Republic flagship is packed into this 20-inch-long model, which includes a front panel that opens to reveal Palpatine's quarters, a hidden cannon under the wings, a drop-bomb launcher, an escape pod, and more. The Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser comes complete with five mini figures: Chancellor Palpatine, two of his elite Senate bodyguards, one Clone Trooper pilot, and one Clone Trooper gunner.

Building the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser
With 1,170 pieces and two colorful instruction booklets, the Venator-Class Republic Attack Cruiser took our two adult testers approximately three-and-a-half hours to construct. The majority of the pieces come in shades of gray, so approaching construction requires a bit or organization and discipline. But once building is started, detailed step-by-step illustrations make assembly straightforward.

Overall, this set scores an excellent rating for its clever design elements. Just when you think you've discovered all the hidden weapons and command posts, you stumble across another. Our favorite features are the Palpatine mini figure -- complete with cloth cape and wrinkled brow -- the sliding gunner, the hidden Clone Trooper cockpit, the escape pod, the bomb dropper, and the Chancellor's enormous command center.

Finally, most of all, our testers enjoyed the way the narrative of this set allowed them to reenact the ship-to-ship combat seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. They also appreciated that the storyline is simple enough to make the set entertaining, whether or not your child has seen the film.

(Quick&Handy... A bit smaller than thought)
『I anchor and lash stuff down, pretty regularly. I use to make my own "quick fix" ones, so having these, cheaper than if you paid the "full price", are great to have around! The carabiner style "small" is a bit larger than this style's "small". This one I would say use for tent tie-outs, and it helped me keep my "plant press" clamped, for college. Definitely only up to "Hiking boot shoe lace", at best. The carabiner style may take 2 mm thicker line, but is about a 1/3 bigger in over-all size. These are like 50 cent pieces in your pocket. Watch your sizes with the "Figure 9s" and definitely handy for utilizing regularly. I have 2 XLs(this style), 3 large (carabiner), 5 small (carabiner),&10 small (this style), mostly used with a couple back-ups.』

(Useful for Anybody Who Wants To Learn Idioms!)
『I have some dictionaries on idioms and I find this one the most helpful because it is really suitable for people who learn English as a second language. I suppose it may be really hard for them to understand idioms at first. However, they may find it useful once they get the hang of it. Unfortunately I found my several new expressions in this dictionary. However, I'm so intrigued by informative and well-organized explanations of each idiom that I would like to recommend this to those who are still struggling to learn English. The main reason is that it sure helps us reinforce our imaginations by judging the meaning from the context. Take the following sentence for example: He blew a gasket when he found out he was fired. In this case, 'to blow a gasket' is an idiom. I would guess whether the sentence means the positive or negative first. Then I would guess how I would feel if I were in his shoes. If possible, I would try to put it differently. I would express this way,"He was furious when he found out he lost his job." Now you might catch what it means; 'to blow a gasket' means 'furious' or 'very angry'. The bottom line is you will strengthen your understanding on idioms if you practice guessing what your new idioms mean from the contexts. But beware; don't overuse them. It'll make sentences unnatural or even wordy!』

    (Terrible Book on the Subject.)
『Let me start by saying I love books on idioms and find their historical evolution fascinating. I was excited by the title of this book on the subject by completely disappointed by the content between the covers. Half of the descriptions have nothing other than a restatement of the phrase itself.

Another large percentage are "guesses" as to from where the phrases originated. It's a poor primer on the subject. There are many better and I'd recommend you glance through the pages prior to purchasing.』

    (My son has Asperger's Syndrome...)
『...and has trouble with language and reading comprehension. We read one or two of these at the dinner table and it always leads to more discussions and life lessons. It's great for our younger son too. It's well written and interesting. My husband and I have learned things too...like the origins of a lot of those funny sayings and how they came to be part of our language today.』

    (Idioms)
『This is a great book for idioms and understanding what they mean. It's written in easy to understand plain english. It's a really fun book to read, you'll enjoy it.』

(A must have for word lovers)
『My teenagers LOVE this book! It is a must have for word lovers. It is not just for younger children.』
『Cat got your tongue? Penny for your thoughts? Come again? Every day, idioms bring color to our speech. Since they don't really mean what they say, idioms can stump even the native English-speaker. Marvin Terban makes understanding idioms "as easy as pie" with the revised SCHOLASTIC DICTIONARY OF IDIOMS. Explanations for, and origins of, more than 700 everyday American idioms, complete with kid-friendly sample sentences. The entries are amusing as well as educational. Alphabetical listing and cross-referencing index makes finding idioms a "piece of cake."』

(Not a Dictionary, Not a Thesaurus, What is it?)
『It's a random list of often goofy, often infinitely obscure, often maddeningly incomplete, always completely unsupported or referenced, and sometimes downright fallacious or wrong definitions of words and phrases.
As far as I can tell, the editor got bored after the first few pages and dropped off to sleep (or stormed from the room in a fit of pique).

This should be a good "odd moments" book for reading while waiting at the doctor's office, or sitting you-know-where, but it's not. If you've even a modicum of practical knowledge, it will leave you scratching your head; one might wonder why the entry "sausage dog means dachshund" is interesting or surprising to anyone other than perhaps a shut-in five-year-old. What is really interesting, to me, is why she left "wiener dog" or "badger dog" (not to mention capital letters and punctuation) out of the equation.

Dr. Kipfer insists the phrase "free range" "is supposed to mean" (as opposed to "really means", which, I thought, was the whole purpose of the book) poultry allowed to roam free and "consuming only a vegetarian diet." I imagine the good doctor has never seen free-range chickens in action, because their diet is anything but vegetarian. (If this sort of thing does not bother you, then perhaps the run-on-without-a-cause "the display case for meat that is packaged at the grocery store and the self-service meat counter and the butcher's area the fresh meat counter" might give puzzle.

Oh, I could go on, but I might be accused of picking fly-poop out of black pepper (which phrase, along with "hen on a June bug" might have afforded some real interest). Truth be told, this book reads like a long walk on a short pier.』

(Didn't quite live up to the subtitle)
『Oh, Phraseology is a trivia buff's dream. Or anyone who loves words and language. My son is of the first persuasion. He loves books like this and promptly snagged it.
Phraseology is one of those books you want to share. I had just as much fun listening to him quiz me on phrases as he did reading it. Some I knew, but some were complete surprises.

Here's a few to whet your appetite -

"To skin a cat" - comes from removing the tough skin from a catfish prior to cooking.

"Fit to be tied" - refers to being insane and bound, as in a straight jacket tied to the body.

This is a great book to leave on the coffee table - it can be picked up and read at whim.

I enjoyed the origin phrases, such as those listed above, the most. Some entries read more like dictionary entries that most people would already know, such as lie detector and celery seed. Some of the facts I found a bit uninspiring - "Asian elephants are smaller than African elephants". Based on the subtitle, I was looking for entries that were more 'bizarre', 'unexpected' and 'fascinating'. Still, this is a fun book to have around the house.

(Vast amounts of words; lacking information)
『Phraseology is a dictionary of phrases, defining evrything from dermagraphism (a hickey) to wild card. Often, the definition is assumed to be known (as in Waldorff salad), and so the basic origin of the word is given. More often, though, a brief definition is given without giving any information as to its etmology. Whereas books such as Ballyhoo, Buckaroo, and Spuds: Ingenious Tales of Words and Their Origins will give a very detailed history of a few words, this book gives a cursory explanation for thousands of words (more than 7000 according to the back of the book). There were a number of aggrivating features to this book. First, I can get more information about word origins and even meanings from the OED. Second, the order of the words seems random. Sometimes the word is listed right where it ought to be (Waldorff salad is in the Ws) and other times, you have to guess (Quahog is under Hard Shelled Clam); there is little authority control. Finally, it's just not interesting to dip into. Most etymology books are either entertaining and brief or are very detailed. This, unfortunatly, is neither. It seems the author bit off more than she could chew. Rather than finding an index card worth of information on the words, she barely found a post-it note.』

(Possibly one of the worst books ever)
『My expectations of this book were that it would be an informative explanation of the origins of common phrases or, at least, a useful reference book. It turned out to be a disjointed pile of data with little or no information. It consists of a randomly selected group of words and phrases, each accompanied by a short, usually meaningless, note. Some notes are a partial definition, many are a somewhat pedantic lecture on proper grammatical usage, some are merely a date when the phrase (allegedly) first apeared. Many of the attempts to explain the meaning and/or origin of phrases are, in my opinion and experience, patently incorrect. In the spirit of fairness, the book may improve in later sections; I only read to the "C" entries before I threw the book across the room in frustration. The book was very effective at scaring the cat.』

The Amazing Secrets of the Phrases We Use Everyday

Phraseology is the ultimate collection of everything you never knew about the wonderful phrases found in the English language. It contains information about phrase history and etymology; unusual, lost, or uncommon phrases; how phrases are formed; and more than 7,000 facts about common English phrases.

Practical enough to be used as a reference book but so fun that every book lover will want to read it straight through, Phraseology contains such engrossing tidbits as:

    • ACROSS THE BOARD is an allusion to the board displaying the odds in a horse race
    • ARTESIAN WELL gets its name from Artois, where such wells were first made
    • BEST MAN originated in Scotland, where the groom kidnapped his bride with the aid of friends, including the toughest and bravest - the best man.

    (Good prelude for Savage Detectives)
『In some ways, it's a mini-Savage Detectives. There are three narrators rather than twenty, it's kept in (mostly) chronological order rather than skipping around, and while there's a mystery, it's not the heart of the story.

It doesn't have the sweep or scale of Savage Detectives, but it's very interesting, and I'd recommend it as a warm-up. Bolano's great.』

    (structure as art not artifice)
『The structure of The Skating Rink is yet another example of Bolano's use of form to enhance or elevate the substance of the story. Earlier examples include By Night in Chile, The Savage Detectives, and 2666. The alternating dialogs of the various protagonists in The Skating Rink occasionally fold the narrative back on itself but never interfere with or retard the advancement of the tale. The structure and interrelating stories of 2666 were mind-blowing and so impressively knit together as to totally obviate the length of the volume. Although The Skating Rink on initial reading seems a much more modest undertaking, it is, nevertheless, another fine addition to the catalog of a protean wordsmith and master story teller.』

    (Bolaño Learned to Write...)
『... while working on this 'first' novel, The Skating Rink. That's a guess on my part; perhaps he knew where he was going and what his 'voice' would be from the start, but I don't think so. The Skating Rink begins as one kind of book, an awkwardly plotted 'crime' novel with a self-consciously literary narrative structure. The three narrators are plausible enough as characters but their narrative voices are not natural, not recognizably 'themselves.' This is especially so in the English translation, in which they have no syntactical fingerprints. I found myself wondering, as I read, how I would have reacted to the first half of The Skating Rink if I hadn't already read some of Bolaño's later novels. I might well have tossed it aside. In short, the first half - make that the first two-thirds - isn't very good. I doubt that I'd have recognized the 'promise' in it.

Those three narrators are all men, writing about their involvement with women. The women remain phantom obsessions in the men's minds. Two of the narrators are what Bolaño calls "hardened poets," a sub-species unknown in most northern climates but endemic to Bolaño's later writings as well. The third is a self-important obnoxious bureaucrat; Bolaño struggles, I think, to make this character psychologically credible. Someone will get murdered, readers are told early in the story, and all three narrators will be involved, but there isn't precisely a mystery. The murder occurs late in the book, and the victim isn't who one has been led to expect. The main action takes place in a sleazy beach town on the Catalan Costa Brava, where decomposition rules.

Social and individual decomposition would become Bolaño's overriding theme in his later books, along with despair and depravity. Don't expect beauty, joy, or lyricism in this or any other novel by Roberto Bolaño! Somewhere around two-thirds of the way through The Skating Rink a seismic shift occurs in Bolaño's style, and the characteristics of hismature writing begin to emerge: his sinister cynicism, his queasy indirectness, his nightmarish sense of impending horror, above all his terrifying moral ambiguity. Nothing is ever not subjective, not merely one mind's partial perception; every thought skates on the edge of madness. Even the eventual 'murderer's confession' seems doubtful, possibly only one illusion in one debauched and damaged mind.

On the other hand, and as a solid recommendation, The Skating Rink is a much 'easier' book than Bolaño's later novels. It's short, the plot exposition is forthright, the syntax is uncomplicated, and there are few of the obscure allusions to Latin American literature and history that make his work challenging for anglophone readers. Bolaño was a major talent, the most interesting Latin American writer since Julio Cortázar, and his premiere novel might well serve to teach Americans how to read him as effectively as it taught him how to write.』

    (Lawless Spanish Territories, Bolano's First)
『I will admit that I am not a reader of crime fiction or detective novels. They're intriguing, but it was just never my scene. Not to say The Skating Rink is that much of a detective novel in the first place. As suggested by Giles Harvey of the New York Review of Books (in an excellent piece in The National), the short novel leaves the reader with more questions than answers. But that's to be expected by now, right?

The story revolves around a mysterious Spanish seaside town Z (close to Y and just a drive away from Z, as it turns out). It is told through the eyes of three men - Remo Morán, an artist and business owner; Enric Rosquelles, a fat, wary and arrogant employee of the town's first socialist mayor Pilar; and Gaspar Heredia, a vagabond and poet who gets a job at a campground thanks to his old friend, Remo Morán - and culminates with, what else?, murder! That it is also alove story and one of the first pieces of prose from Bolaño (published in 1993 as La piesta de hielo) adds layers to an already fascinating character study and mystery.

Like anyone who had fallen (or been tricked) to love Roberto Bolaño over the years (I myself discovered him in translation, in 2006, three years after his death, reading By Night In Chile, Distant Star and Last Evenings on Earth back to back) will recognize the early contributions that he would perfect in his two masterpieces, The Savage Detectives and 2666. Hismixture of the innane and mercurial and violent is mesmerizing. The way Z unfolds as Gaspar chased Caridad, his descriptions of the Palacio Benvingut ("labyrintine, chaotic, indecisive...") where the murder takes places, or his creation of the beautiful figure skater, Nuria Martí.

While others will talk about the plot, the motifs (the dense, rolling fog...), I was intrigued because I couldn't pinpoint Bolaño himself in the story. This may seem odd, but even without his doppleganger Arturo Belano (of Savage Detective fame), Roberto is always present in his often deeply personal stories based upon reflections on his own life. Most will compare Bolaño immediately to Heredia. Both came from Mexico to Spain and Bolaño spent years working the overnight shift at a campground. The case is also strong in Remo Morán's favor. Rosquelles, when musing about Remo's ex-wife, comments that she named their son some god awful Indian name (his name was Iñaki in the novel, but Bolaño's real son's name is Lautaro). Bolaño (just read 2666) also had a desire to be a detective, which he echoes through Moran:

"Sometimes in the mornings, when I'm having breakfast on my own, I think I would have loved to be a detective. I'm pretty observant, and I can reason deductively, and I'm a keen reader of crime fiction. If that's any use... which it isn't... Anyway, as Hans Henny Jahn, I think, once wrote: if you find a murder victim, better brace yourself, because the bodies will soon be coming thick and fast..."

Also, when thinking about the first time he'd seen a corpse, he responded:

"The first time was in Chile, in Concepción, the capital of the south. I was looking out the big window of the gymnasium where I was imprisoned along with about a hundred other people: it was a November night in 1973, the moon was full, and in the courtyard I saw a fat guy surrounded by a ring of police detectives...

We know, from Bolaño and his characters in multiple stories, that he was there in 1973 when Salvador Allende was overthrow by General Augusto Pinochet. Bolaño was among those arrested and escaped torture and a certain death when he met soldiers he'd gone to school with who helped him escape.

    For Harvey:

"In any case, the real strength of the book isn't to be found in its plot. The problem with most mystery novels is that there aren't any mysteries in them, only secrets...Just as the novel is about to enter its final phase, and the shotguns brandished in the first act seem poised to go off, Morán knowingly echoes Borges's knowing remark about the detective story as a genre based on the fictitious notion that "a crime is solved by abstract reasoning and not by informants or by carelessness on the part of the criminals"

Bolaño seems to have split himself into multiple forms for The Skating Rink, which bristles with self-confidence and an honesty shrouded by the machinations of life. What Bolaño may have put of himself in the detestable, but intriguing Enric Rosquelles, will remain open for debate. That the novel continues to enhance his stature in the English speaking world is not. "The more you read him," writes Harvey one last time, "however, the more you come to savour the welts and infelicities, the gaping narrative holes and peculiar detours: you realise that Bolaño is turning you into a new kind of reader. Or, as Moran puts it on the opening page of The Skating Rink, describing his first encounter with Heredia, back in the distant Mexico City of their youth: `his voice seemed to be conjuring lawless territories, where anything was possible'."

And having read Monsieur Pain (to be released in January) and Between Parantheses (next year) in Spanish, anything is still possible.』

    (The Skating Rink)
『"The Skating Rink" was my third encounter with Roberto Bolaño, after 2666: A Novel and The Savage Detectives, and I have to say that I found it to be different but equally as engaging. To begin with, the novel is substantially shorter than both "2666" and "The Savage Detectives" but still retains the mystery and wonder present in those novels. It is definitely more of what I would call a straight-forward mystery (in Bolaño terms that is) and has a clear and defined course that meanders significantly less. It is inconventional in that it is presented from three different points of view and is told in a past tense where each of the narrators are fullyaware of the nature of the crime, the victim and the criminal at the beginning, but the reader still has to wait until the end to get any sort of resolution. I was also very intrigued that the novel was able to achieve a great blending of a mystery novel and a work of literary fiction. While I didnot enjoy it as much as "2666" or "The Savage Detectives," "The Skating Rink" was a good read and shows a different side to Bolaño that I was unaware of.』
“He is by far the most exciting writer to come from South of the Rio Grande in a long time.” —Ilan Stavans,Los Angeles TimesSet in the seaside town of Z, on the Costa Brava, north of Barcelona,The Skating Rinkoscillates between two poles: a camp ground and a ruined mansion, the Palacio Benvingut. The story, told by three male narrators, revolves around a beautiful figure skating champion, Nuria Martí. When she is suddenly dropped from the Olympic team, a pompous but besotted civil servant secretly builds a skating rink in the ruined Palacio Benvingut, using public funds. But Nuria has affairs, provokes jealousy, and the skating rink becomes a crime scene. A mysterious pair of women, an ex-opera singer and a taciturn girl often armed with a knife, turn up as well.

A complex book,The Skating Rink’s short chapters are skillfully broken off with questions to maintain the narrative tension:Who was murdered? Who was the murderer? Will the murderer be caught? All of these questions are answered, and yetThe Skating Rinkis not fundamentally a crime novel, or not exclusively; it’s also about political corruption, sex, the experience of immigration, and frustrated passion. And it’s an atmospheric chronicle of one summer season in a seaside town, with its vacationers, its drifters, its businessmen, bureaucrats and social workers. .』

    (Seriously Lacking in Value!)
    『Although my youngest son wanted this action figure really bad;

The price never approaches the value for what received.

The figure is extremely small; and probably cost, at most, $[...] dollars elsewhere in actual stores other than Amazon.

The base price was $[...] approximately. $[...] something with shipping via Amazon.

I thought that the figure would be much larger or more robust than it actually was.

This will be the last time that I purchase an item such as this via Internet or Amazon.』

(Only place I could find Vilgax!)
『My son really wanted Vilgax in his Ben 10 collection... Amazon was the only place I could find him... although over-priced in my opinion, my son is extrememly happy with the toy.』

    (Character figure)
『I had ordered this item and a wrong item was sent. The Wall of Fame people were so great. They are truly a customer service oriented company. Before buying this toy, be sure to read the description. It says that the arms and legs are removable. They truly are - making it much fun for my 4 year old grandson, and frustrating for my 2 year old grandson.

    (Great toy)
『Toy was great. You can take snap off his body parts and put them back again. The only problems are he is too small compared to the character in the cartoon&his color scheme is different. It was alot of fun for my nephew.』

    (Get some glue)
『This is a must have addition to your Ben 10 collection. But, beware--Vilgax's arms legs, head and chestplate all come off. I'm not sure why; Are your kids supposed to be able to grusomely dismember him? Anyway, my boys are four and two, so we superglued all the pieces on, except his arms so he would still have some articulation. The coming apart is probably cool for older kids, but if your Ben 10 fans are little guys like mine, I would reccommend supergluing him right out of the package.』

    (Poser 6 Review)
『I got frustrated trying make humanoid figures in Blender, so i purchased Poser6. From the outset the default figures are very good. It didnt take me long to learn how to add hair, clothing and deform the figures. But thats as far as i got. There are so many variables that affect the final render, such as lighting, skin textures, etc. This package is for experienced users. I have since sold my Poser package, as it was far too complex for what i expected.』

    (poser 6)
『this product is extremely difficult to learn. I recently purchased two more expensive manuals ro learn the process and also the tutorials the company has are beyond the average users learning.』

    (Merits Need to Be Proven)
『In theory and ideal this an incredibly wonderful package with great expectations.Since personally I have not created anything better, yet,it is difficult to ridicule, but I must say the bugs should have been minimized before the next version was released which no doubt is plagued with the aforesaid problems. The copy I received was not full functioning as they set claims for it to be and appeared less than a demo version which was available for free. Many of its claimed functions did not,i.e. realistic hair design and motion, animated movement(walk path acted like fly by,but was interesting, thought provoking),charactar foldrs wouldnot open and import from Shader was null and character creation was non existant. It has a face morph which does layer faces onto some heads, feature morh works limitedly(aging, facial nuiscances) but would not export to working scene image and were stuck in creation room.Customer service was great need,I did admittedly pester them daily with reports of bugs and failures with detailed actions as atempts of work arounds.Import export features too limited for productivity or usage.Concidering I had purchsed a several hundred meg GPU card for such works with multipipe lines this was very perpplexing tool(or toy) to deal with, animation was never simple for quality in film or video,』

    (Shade LE?)
『I received the bundle but there is no installation key for Shade LE.

I noticed the someone else's review stating this same problem is no longer visible so I figured I'd post it again.』

    (Much room for improvement...)
『As has been previously pointed out, Poser 6 seems to have been designed by a committee of people..that did not much like each other.
The user interface is pretty terrible. It seriously needs revamping to a more Windows-like format.

The cration of figures yields very good results on the other hand, although additional content can run into big bucks. Be warned.

My biggest beef with Poser 6 is with applying clothing to the model. It is ludicrously hard to do. It is TEDIOUS to the point of suicidal depression. There has GOT to be a better way.
Actually... there is a better way: placing the artical of clothing in position , the "shrink-wrapping" it around the figure, using the polys of thye figure itself as a guide. I do not have the coding skills to write such a sub-routine myself, but there are plenty of people that do.

Poser 7 is supposed to be coming out this year right in time for Xmas. I REALLY hope efrontiers is not doing a rush job on getting Poser 7 out in time. That was done with Poser 5 when it was released and proved a serious botch job. Poser 6 is only a marginal improvement over it's predecessor. I am hoping 7 will be a REAL improvement.

What the program REALLY needs is a complete, top-to-bottom redesign; from scratch. What we have actually seen so far is new versions of the same old thing; a patch, on a patch, on a patch.』

『Poser 6 brings the art of figure design and posing right to your desktop. Start designing and posing immediately, with new high-resolution, fully rigged male, female, boy and girl 3D figures. The rich content libraries have 9 categories, including a wide variety of figures in various preset poses, as well as props, lights, cameras, accessories and materials. Create personalized heads and textures in the Face Room, by using just two photographs. Bring your scenes to life by animating figures, props, cameras, lights, and even material, and eliminate much of the repetitive work by designing and applying motion cycles. Realistic Lighting - Add colors, cast shadows, create specific effects, and set the tone for your scene Bone Rigging creates fully poseable Poser figures from any 3D object in a few easy steps Inverse Kinematics (IK) delivers natural character motion by modeling the hierarchical interactions of bones and joints New OpenGL hardware acceleration for scene previews, letting you maximize your rendering time Photo-based facial mapping for lifelike facial modeling and texture maps』
『Poser 6 brings the art of figure design and posing right to your desktop, with an innovative UI to make working with the human form easily accessible. Included human and animal models come ready for you to start designing and posing immediately. You can click-and-drag to interactively sculpt faces, pose body parts, or create various ethnic varieties. For those who require finer control, full body morphs, facial expression morphs, and bone rigging are easily accessible for any figure. All features and models are provided in a natural 3D environment for realistic depth, lighting and shadowing on any figure in any pose. You can pose any figure by clicking and dragging a body part. With Document Display Styles you can view and design your figure in silhouette, outline, wireframe, textured, and more. The program lets you manipulate individual body parts, including the full body, facial expressions and fully articulated hands, and interactively sculpt and design figures in real time, including the body and facial expressions. Object-level Collision Detection helps with posing and avoids collisions when animating.

    What's New in Poser 6?
    • New Figures
Poser 6 introduces James and Jessi, new figures with amazing realism to bring a new level of photorealstic content to your artwork. Both figures accurately depict the human form, have lifelike skin textures, and full morph target sets to design your own custom figures with facial expressions. Also included are new boy and girl children figures, Ben and Kate, who complete the new Poser family. The new Poser figures come with photorealistic texture maps, full body morphs, facial expression morphs, and are fully rigged for posing.
    • More Content
Poser's Content Paradise now includes a host of top content providers, to bring you a diverse range of Poser 6 models, textures, poses, character packs, utilities and free stuff. A redesigned interface makes finding Poser content faster and easier than ever before.
    • Enhanced UI
Poser's innovative UI is centered on a productive room-based environment. Individual Pose, Setup, Materials, Hair and Cloth rooms provide easy feature access for each step in the creative process. In addition to rooms, Poser uses floating palettes and windows. You can customize your Poser workspace by hiding/displaying and relocating controls anywhere you like. You can even save up to nine different screen configurations for the entire Poser workspace.
    • Shadow Catching
Poser 6 introduces several new features to support artists in rendering more true to life shadow effects. For example the NEW Shadow Catcher feature enables you to separate shadows from their underlying surface, and put them virtually anywhere. These new features make image composition and integrating 3D figures into graphic design easier.
    • New Toon Outlines
The New Toon Outline feature uses post-processing during rendering to draw an outline around the edges of cartoon images. Poser 6 offers customizable outline styles, enabling you to further personalize your cartoon shading look. Add a distinctive style to any cartoon imagery for comics. Now you have the choice to add outlines to any cartoon imagery you create with Poser. This feature's effect is most dramatic when combined with a cartoon shader node. Configurable Cartoon Shading preview styles allow you to approximate the final render results as you work.
    • OpenGL
OpenGL delivers accelerated performance when previewing anything from cartoon to photorealistic 3D figures. Now you can display vivid textures and lighting in real-time when designing figures. You can even render high resolution images using the OpenGL Preview renderer. There are accelerated previews for your 3D scenes, so you can see vivid textures and lighting in real-time. This feature works with all Document Display Styles, including wireframe, cartoon, and more. You can render out your 3D scene display with the OpenGL Preview renderer, and easily switch between SreeD Software and OpenGL Hardware for scene previews--which means you can maximize your system's resources and spend your time creating rather than waiting.
    • New Ambient Occlusion
Ambient Occlusion makes figures seem as though they are in the natural lighting environment of the real world. Ambient Occlusion is available on every light to create accurate soft shadow effects, thus giving scenes a new degree of realism. The new Ambient Occlusion shader node makes figures and objects appear as though they are in a natural lighting environment. Ambient Occlusion darkens surfaces within a scene whose exposure to light is blocked by other objects. This effect uses raytracing to calculate the degree to which other objects within a scene occlude the ambient light of a surface at a given point. Surfaces with more occlusion will be rendered as darker than surfaces with little or no occlusion. You can set Ambient Occlusion lighting for all objects, or select lighting effects focused on specific parts of your scene.
