『The problem is that all these new metal bands sound the same nowadays. I can't distinguish one band from another. Soilwork, however, at least does it well. I approve.』

『They do this mixed metal/pop thing pretty good, you could even imagine some strings on the chorus in "Cranking the Sirens". But good grief, this formula is so overworked at this point it's hard to take it seriously anymore. The only reason I bothered to review this is that they have a talent for writing hooks in the choruses, and that shouldn't be thrown away. If these guys dropped the speed metal riff/croaking rap vocal parts, they might actually have something that would be worth recording. I realize that would completely change who they are, but when you're tromping over the same ground time and time again, maybe change isn't such a bad thing.』

(Disappointing (2.5 stars))
『In general, this is not a terrible album. But when you put this one up against everything else Soilwork has done, it's really not impressive. I loved the abrasiveness of Soilwork's classic A PREDATOR'S PORTRAIT, but that really doesn't show here.

FNF is composed mostly of formulaic song structure and tries a little too hard. If I didn't know Soilwork better, I'd mistake this album for an attempt at the mainstream. Don't get me wrong, there are a few saving graces. Rejection Role is a great, intense song and one of my favorites. Other than that, there are a few impressive guitar solos interspersed throughout FNF (check out The Mindmaker, Brickwalker).

Like I said, not a terrible album; I own it. But unless you're hell-bent on owning every last Soilwork album, I'd opt for APP, NATURAL BORN CHAOS, or STABBING THE DRAMA.』

(Silence Like Thunder)
『Sometimes what is not said speaks louder than the story that is told. Aside from the underlying causes of John's premature death, what scars this fine film and tribute to an extraordinary musician is what was not said and by whom. The lifestyle of rockstars -- drugs and drink, etc. --leads to bad and foolish behavior; that much is certain. But bad character is another matter and bad character is what is shown here, not by John or Pete, but by the glaring, conspicuous absence of Roger Daltry. Whatever personal differences Roger may have had with John pale when compared to the loss of a gifted, humble man who was his fellow band member for decades and one of the greatest bass players in the history of rock. While the brilliant but hyperneurotic Pete was open and frank, Daltry's total silence went beyond disrespect to sink into the nadir of insensitivity and crassness. I came away from this documentary with nothing but respect for John and nothing but contempt for Roger Daltry.』

(A nice visit with an old friend.)
『First, I'll cut to the chase - I'd buy this again. The show was well worth watching. Nothing really new, but it is nice to have a DVD that is about John, not about The Who with bits about John. It contains nice interviews with his son and others. A few good shorts of John with his band, and although he looks ill in his interviews, that is one of the high 'bits' as it were - he never shows regrets, but he sure seems to have enjoyed the ride.』

This DVD provides us with a side of John that wasn't accessible to the media at large -- you see him from the point of view of the people who knew him, worked with him, and loved him. The interview footage with Pete is priceless. Notable (for reasons beyond me), is the complete absence of Roger in this biography. If you love The Who, buy it and enjoy it -- you won't regret it.』

(The near perfect set of Poulenc performances)
『I have owned the LP-version of this set of recordings for almost two decades. A veritable treasure. Now that the cd-version is available, I hesitate to make the switch. I have listened to samples presented on Amazon's website and I really liked what I heard. So, I'm stuck with a major problem here!
Anyway, for me the absolute top performances here are those by William Parker and Elly Ameling. Ameling stands at the very summit of her glorious career here. She brings an unsurpassed natural brightness, tenderness as well as a sprightly innocence to these songs, fully in line with Poulenc's own distinctly Mediterranean "grande chaleur".
Parker not only carries a voice so completely unique and full of splendid, colourful nuances, but his French is impeccable, period. Such incredible splendour and wonderfully fine-tuned musicality should have been appreciated much more highly and explicitly by the big recording companies and public performance agencies of special repute. The man seems to have gone into total hiding for quite a while already. A shame and a pity.
However this maybe, buy this collection of absolutely marvellous mélodies. You'll cherish your set for the rest of your life.』

『'Poulenc Melodies' performed by a really impressive lineup of vocal talent including Elly Ameling and Nicolai Gedda is exactly the kind of recording you need if you are compulsive about having 'complete' collections of things. This shows a range of composition which smaller releases such as single CD 'Voyage a Paris' (Hyperion, with Felicity Lott and Graham Johnson)can give us. For starters, many of these chansom showed a lot more evidence of more modern stylings and a far greater range of interpretation. In fact, I even had to check the lyrics in the included booklet to verify that on some songs, the performers were singing in French. Even though I have a smattering of knowledge of French, I would have sworn that the singers were performing songs in Russian.

I am happy that all four discs run for more than 60 minutes. No cheap short changing here. If you don't want to spring for the large set, the Hyperion release is great, but this is worth every penny.』

(Almost completely wonderful)
『Its very considerable advantage lies in its completeness. Poulenc was one of the very greatest songwriters of any era. If you have no Poulenc songs in your collection, start here. The recommendation of Kruysen is a fine one, but only after you have heard this as a basis of comparison. Of Ameling, Senechal, Souzay, Gedda, and Parker, the only disappointment is Parker, who - I'll just say it - sings with his usual bleat. Souzay is a shade past it in vocal quality, but he still understands these songs as well as anybody, with great declamation (and that, after all, is what most of French singing is about). The dryness of the voice is nowhere close to disastrous, as it might have been in Italian opera. Indeed, it lends an air of life lived, without excuses. Gedda is okay. The standouts are Souzay, Ameling, and Senechal. Baldwin accompanies superbly.』

(Indisputable Gallic flair)
『These performances are piquant and stylistically right on target. Even if Souzay is past his best here, he brings a lifetime of experience to bear and the other performers are wonderful. Ignore the curmudgeon who blasted this set. You will enjoy this tremendously if you love Poulenc.』

(Courtroom Murder Mysteries)
『The "Perry Mason" novels were a form of mystery stories where the lawyer is the detective and the solution occurs in a courtroom. A real life court trial is not as dramatic. Erle Stanley Gardner often educated his readers with new technology or medical-legal facts, and warned of swindles. The TV shows were simplified and modified versions from the originals, or new stories. Some may criticize the tactics of Perry Mason but they represent life before the modern legal rules of the 1960s. The prices, automobiles, and monetary figures date these stories. They record the styles and culture of the 1950s. The many character actors who look like ordinary people enrich these stories, their emotions are often read from their facial expressions. [These original stories have themes from Gardner's novels.]

"The Case of the Fancy Figures" begins when a man parks a Thunderbird by the Hyett office building in front of a "Do Not Park" sign. [Symbolism.] Charles Brewster is accused of being the embezzler for which another man ,Martin Ellis, was convicted. "Very interesting." Were others involved? Valery Brewster loves her drinks. "I can stop anytime." [Charles is a louse.] Carol Ellis gets a small package of 16mm microfilm, she visits Perry Mason, who calls D.A. Burger. There is a view of San Quentin, Perry visits Martin Ellis. Mr Squires from the Insurance and Bonding company wants to recover the lost money. Brewster offers a deal to get out of jail, but Squires isn't fooled. Jonathan Hyett calls to report a suicide! Does he touch anything? Lt. Tragg investigates, the doorman identifies a visitor from a photograph. Perry will defend Martin Ellis, who visited Brewster and fought with him. Who sent $5,000 to Perry? Who typed that note? Mr. Squires visits Perry's office and explains the deal. Who sent all that money? They identified the typewriter. The Hearing begins, Lt. Tragg testifies on the facts. Jonathan tells what he did at Brewster's apartment, Perry questions him. Who was he protecting? Can a wife testify against her husband? Perry and Paul investigate the new developments. Carol Ellis testifies about the new facts. Then Valery Brewster tells what she witnessed. Perry gets an admission from another witness, this will clear his client. The last scene explains the solution.

"The Case of the Singular Double" begins at an airport parking lot. An anxious young woman leaves with a suitcase, she puts it into a car then makes a telephone call. Lucy Stevens wants to quit her job. Another woman transports that suitcase. What is the problem? Can a campaign contribution result in a zoning change that is favorable to a developer? Lucy drives a 1950 Chevrolet to the dock. [No throttle control?] Will she disappear? Carole Morgan visits Perry Mason about the missing Lucy. Paul Drake investigates the backgrounds of Lucy, and Carole Morgan too. Lt. Tragg arrives when that car is lifted from the sea. A woman's body is in the car! Mr. Burnett identifies the body as Lucy Stevens. Perry questions Carole Morgan to get the truth. Whose body was in the car? Perry visits Burnett to ask questions. Perry visits Whitney Locke to ask questions about Burnett, but he knows nothing. Perry gets a name of a woman, Lucy is arrested for the murder of Marjory Ralston. When the Hearing begins Burnett tells about sending Lucy to deliver money to a parked car. Locke needs campaign contributions to run for office. Lt. Tragg tells whose body was found. Where was Burnett at the time of the murder? [The detail about noise on the line is dated.] Perry recalls two witnesses. One admits to lying to the police. The other tells about his policies. Perry asks about the delivery of the money. Objection sustained. The D.A. calls another witness. This leads to a surprising statement by a witness that frees Perry's client. The last scene ties up the loose ends.

『I used these videos for a special middle/high school course I taught called the Mathematics of Sports. The videos are great. Some of my older students thought a couple of the videos were cheesy (my students were in grades 7th-10th). Overall, they are a wonderful set of videos that help relate science and math to sports.』

It presents an superb conceptual picture of speed, momentum, friction forces, projectile motion, and form drag to name a few. The information is accurate, and presented in a fun format using kids and professional athletes. I'd recommend it for any science classroom!』

『This is one of my favorite movies of all time. The DVD is great. The color, picture and sound is great. The cast and their clothing is beautifull.』

(Underrated film)
『The problems in Solomon and Sheba have nothing to do with Yul Brynner, who gives an excellent performance. The problems lay in the miscasting of George Sanders, too old to play Solomon's brother, and of David Farrar, too British to play Pharaoh. The battle scenes are underwhelming, and King Vidor often directs like he's back in the silent era. There is a very silly orgy sequence and a ridiculous close-up of Sanders on the battlefield. Even if Tyrone Power had not died, the problem was still Vidor.』

『i first time i saw this movie was when i was in grade school sometime in 1958 or 1960. and it was only 2009 when i saw it again on dvd. it's great to see this movie again and bring back memories. all i can remember during the first time i saw it is the scene wherein solomon's armies were outnumbered and they had to use their shields to reflect the sun's rays in order that they can blind their enemies, that is the one scene that is still vivid in my memory and i cannot await to see it again this time on dvd. i had a special crush on gina lollobrigida when i was young and she was my fantasy during my younger days. the movie was well directed. cinematography is great. action scenes were great. romantic scenes were also great. the production sets were superb. but the best part of the movie was towards the ending when the real message of the bible was really revealed. that ending portion put tears in my eyes. that was the whole message of the movie and it was worth knowing it at the end of the movie. this movie should be shown in all bible classes in all schools.』

『Yul Brynner stars as the legendary figure of the Bible in King Vidor's only contribution to this popular 1950s genre. 『I remember when this came out and, even tho I really like John C. Reilly (GREAT character actor!), I had no desire to see it. Then my brother was talking about the movie and he couldn't find it at our local video rental so I told him I'd look for it out on amazon.com. Found it, bought it and, just to humor my brother, I watched it with him. LAUGHED MY A** OFF! While this movie may not be for everyone, it's definitely worth checking it out. (Walk Hard: The Story of Dewey Cox)
『Spoof movies have been around for as long as the art form of film has been entertaining people. From Charlie Chaplin to Woody Allen to the Marx Brothers and Mel Brooks, film makers have been spoofing other movie forms to satirize society and politics. Spoof movies have made us laugh while also showing us the error in our ways and the inherent stupidity found in our societal ways. Unfortunately, the form has taken a beating with the "[Insert Genre Here] Movie" series which has driven the genre into the mire. But when Judd Apatow joined with Jake Kasdan (a co-collaborator on Freaks and Geeks and Zero Effect), what they came up with should have turned the genre up on it's ear.

After the accidental halving of his brother, Dewey Cox learns how to play blues guitar and starts writing songs. At the age of 14, he insights a riot with the song "Take My Hand" and leaves home to seek stardom. Dewey's discovered by Jewish businessmen in a club where black folk go to dance erotically when Dewey fills in for the regular act when he gets laryngitis. Making a huge splash with his first single, Walk Hard, Dewey goes on the road and we follow him through the ups and downs, the relationships, the drugs, and the destroying of multiple public and private bathrooms.

Jake Kasdan and Judd Apatow do a great job of making this movie feel like a real biopic and not just a series of skits formed together to make a movie. They present each time frame with real authenticity, injecting the 60's with the whimsy we've seen in past movies, and the 70's with the "grooviness" we've come to expect of this kind of movie. The music feels authentic as well, feeling as if it's been written throughout the time frames seen in the movie.

But you don't go into a parody for the dramatic elements, and for the comedy this movie has great pedigree. It fits in handsomely with other Apatow comedies like Knocked Up, 40 Year Old Virgin, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. John C. Reilly, fresh off Taladega Nights, shows off more of the comedic chops that he had shown in that movie, while also bringing a dramatic pedigree to the role not typical to this kind of comedy in recent years (he was nominated for an Oscar for his role in Chicago). On top of that, it seems as though everyone in Hollywood wanted to be involved in this movie as this movie boasts one of the largest lists of cameos I have ever seen in a movie including Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Jack White of the White Stripes, Lyle Lovett, Jewell, Tim Meadows, Justin Long, Kristen Wiig, Craig Robinson, and Jonah Hill just to name a few.

As with any biopic, whether real or fake, though, this movie seems to loose it's away as the main character loses his way as well. It becomes more frenetic and loses pacing later on, but seems to catch itself before straying too far. Also some of the characters are underdeveloped as usually happens in biopics as you try to cram in characters that truly effected the main characters life. Luckily, the movie never feels as though it's dragging, and remains consistent with the laughs throughout.

While Walk Hard was a critical hit, it unfortunately, it bombed at the box office where it deserved more of an audience. I highly recommend giving this chance if you like comedy and musician biopics. While funny, the movie never feels as though it's making fun of the people presented in the biopics it's skewering like Johnny Cash or Ray Charles. A word of warning, as with any Apatow flick one can expect a large amount of vulgarity including full frontal male and female nudity, a lot of cursing, and more than one person getting cut in half, so this may not be a movie you want to watch in front of the children. For those of you who can get around the aforementioned vulgarity (or embrace it as I do) you will be justly rewarded!

(Awesome movie and great music)
『There's nothing I can say positive about this movie that the other reviews haven't. From 'He's only 14!' to the last frame of Dewey clutching his chest, this movie rocks. The comedy is crazy in parts, yet subtle in others.

The one thing that really stood out at me, is the number of running jokes in this movie. Dewey's wife says he'll fail no matter how much he accomplishes, he tries each new drug in the bathroom, his music changes after each new drug, he's never home but has dozens of kids, he busts up bathrooms each time he gets peed off, his dad keeps saying the wrong kid died, he mispronounces the first two drug names 'reefers' and 'cok caine', and there's another one or two I found but can't think of.

This is a great movie, and the best comedy I've seen in years.』

『Warning, mild spoilers ahead! (Very mild, don't think they will spoil anything)

I bought this (or rather the bilingual Japanese version) from Amazon.co.jp, which is why it doesn't list me as having purchased it through Amazon.com. I bought this in the hopes that I could share it with students in a university Media class that I teach. I didn't have much in the way of expectations, mainly because I knew next to nothing about it before buying it (I don't know if it was even released theatrically here), but I found that I really liked this movie. I never thought I would like a film where not 1, but 2 people get halved with machetes -- I never, ever, ever, ever, never, never thought I would say that. But there you go, never ever say never.

What is this movie? A parody of Walk the Line? A genre by genre comedic dance of the history of American popular music? A tour de force for John C. Reilly? I think it is a bit of all of these things. I think one of the most important things about this film is that it shows that Reilly is much, much more than a sidekick for Will Ferrell. He is a genuine talent. I loved the fact that after the elementary school aged Dewey Cox, it is always Reilly, with no intermediate stage actors, playing the character. Somehow I found it really funny when the 6 foot 4 , 40 something Reilly, was playing 14 year old Cox asking his mom not to embarrass him in front of his friends.

Much like Jerry Lee Lewis, Cox gets a twelve year old girlfriend, but she is played by a 30 something year old actress. Utterly absurd (but not in the derogatory sense). Like many good movies, the supporting cast makes a big difference. Tim Meadows, SNL alum (the Ladies Man) was very good as the drummer who was with Cox since the beginning of his career, and was his gateway into spiraling decline by enabling his drug use, running the gambit as enabler from pot in the 50s, to Viagra in the modern day. How about Harold Ramis (I didn't recognize him until his 2nd or 3rd appearance) as a Hasidic record producer, or David Krumolz (Charlie from Numb3rs) as long time agent. Jack Black as Paul McCartney? Frank Muniz (Malcolm, form Malcolm in the Middle) as Buddy Holiday? This film was fun from a "Who the hell is that!?!?" name that cameo, perspective. --Please don't complain that Jack Black has almost no physical resemblance to Paul McCartney, that and his accent is spoofalicious, it is part of the gag.

Speaking of which, one of the cool things about this film was its effective use of the running gag. It is so easy to overuse or misuse such things, but from Meadows continuous admonition of "You don't want any of this!", just before he pulls Cox into a new form of drug abuse, to Cox's tendency to tear sinks out of bathroom walls as a metaphor for despair, to his father's horrible mantra, "The wrong son died!", somehow they seemed to play all these jokes pretty well. This film was all about hyperbole. It really seemed to capture so much of American music, and troubled musicians, by showing intentionally exaggerated to the breaking point versions of different character types.

I can't understand the 1 star reviews given to this film, but I guess you can't argue taste, perhaps especially so in terms of humor. Either you get it or you don't. I think I got it. His wife, 13 or 14 years old at the time, already with a several kids (though remember, the actress is in her 30s), using as her telephone sign off, "I love you, you're going to fail!," or Cox not realizing that bigamy was illegal ("What, even if your famous?") was pretty genuinely funny.

I hope that this film makes a lot of money as a dvd, gains a following, and maybe cult status, because apparently it didn't get much notice in the theaters. I really want the powers that be to be encouraged to allow more, similarly creative stuff, and for John C. Reilly (and Harold Ramis, and Tim Meadows, and the other creative folks too numerous to mention) to be in a lot more things. This is not a Ferrell&Reilly comedy, minus Ferrell. This is its own, pretty cool thing that should be judged on its own (in my opinion) very high merits.

Though an unaccountable box office disappointment,Walk Hardis poised for discovery and cult status on DVD. You'd think the film had pretty much exhausted all the puns and double-entendres you could get out of Dewey Cox's last name, but the Elvis-inspired "A Christmas Song from Dewey Cox," the "Cox Sausage Commercial" and "The Real Dewey Cox," which are among this two-disc set's extra features, manages to get even more mileage out of that juvenile joke. Speaking of which, there is a "cockumentary" devoted to actor Tyler Nilson, who provides the film with its most shocking laugh during the hotel orgy scene, TheUnbearably Long, Self-Indulgent Director's Cutcontains, ahem, extended footage of that scene and features the deleted setups for some of the theatrical cut's more inexplicable gags (a deleted montage reveals just how Dewey and band member Theo wound up in bed together).
