Only these guys (and one chick) are loads heavier, and their knack for rhythm is greatly appreciated by me (I'm a drummer/guitarist).

(Pick it up.) 『As I listened to this album at work today several things went through my mind. I wondered why so many people aren't into this band, why they're not huge, and what separates this record from other records (like terror's lowest of the low) that got HUGE but sound almost exactly the same. Honestly if anything, this record is technical hardcore at it's best. Truly. I guess it all boils down to the same old scene bs: kids hate on bands because they can, because the lyrical content doesn't revolve around the dropping of the f bomb between every other word. Or because they are a religious oriented band. I don't know much about this current christian "hate" trend in hardcore, but i do know this: I care about lyrical content. I'm not edge, but I appreciate edge music...and in this same vein...I'm not christian, but I appreciate a positive message.

I could be way off. All I know is when I listen to the new comeback kid record, every time I hear the background vocals (tracks 5,9) I want to listen to this record instead. I'm going out on a limb here to say that anyone who hates on this album and claims to be scene needs to get their priorities checked. The production is excellent. Every track is tight. Though I thorougly enjoyed all previous albums, I feel this is their best work.

(Incredibly under-appreciated!) 『I found out about these guys based on a commercial. Specifically it was that Lexus Pebble Beach commercial that Kael Alden (of FPF) did through his commercial music production company Robot Repair. The music from that commercial sounded right up my alley so when I found this group was associated with the guy that did that, I decided they might be a good find. I tell this story to emphasize how difficult it is to find this band, which is a shame. But if you're here now, give yourself a pat on the back, you made it!
In this album, Irvine-based Faded Paper Figures has produced a very top quality indie pop music, heavily influenced by the likes of the Postal Service. The music is well-produced and catchy and the lyrics are clever... in all it has the right ingredients to be a popular album. Nevertheless, I've seen very little press for this group, leaving them somewhat unknown. So if you've managed to find your way to this page, do yourself a favor and give them a try. I've listened to this album quite literally over one hundred times and would definitely consider it one of my better musical purchases in recent memory. Throughout, my favorite tracks have remained Geneva's Gone and Metropolis.』

(video for older kids) 『I bought this video to use in a third grade CCD class that I teach. When I previewed it, I was impressed with the effort that was put into the production of the film. But I did not show it to my class because some of the movie was too graphic for their age group. Also, some of the language would've been difficult for them to understand. I would recommend this video for the upper grades 5-6. The children narrating the movie are about that age. I wouldn't recommend it to use with younger children.』
(Disappointed in this purchase) 『This DVD was very disappointing for several reasons. The main character (a boy) was contentious toward his father on several occasions, yet received no real correction for it and showed no sign of repentance. Several children meet up at night without any parental supervision on different occasions, and at one point two of the boys get into a brawl. I honestly could only handle watching about 30 minutes of this and had to turn it off. I would not show this DVD to my children because of the ill fruit it might produce in their character. The portrayal of Jesus and his disciples seemed much more on track with what I was looking for. Again, I did not watch the entire DVD, so it's possible that things improve with the children, but I wouldn't waste my time waiting to see.』
(Each child is different) 『I would like to have seen a greater focus on Jesus, not the children. It was a little fragmenting in the opening scenes having the children each recall bits and pieces about Jesus .... you didn't know who the main character was! There were angels speaking to Mary, a baby, a temple scene, a Baptism, etc. all within a couple of minutes....
I guess that is the problem of narrating a story through the eyes of someone else, and not letting the Scriptures speak straight to you. You have to go through the 'filter' of that character; and are forever limited to seeing things from their point of view (or how the narrator portrays them). But that is a more general point about the 'narrative'.
I think movies etc. are good but especially for the younger child, who can't read; but the younger they are the more they need a movie that simply tells the story of Jesus; and does so slowly and simply, focusing upon Jesus from start to finish...For that reason the movie that just puts the Bible into pictures (as far as possible) is to be preferred- especially for the very little ones... but I recognise each child is different
I think they will get bored if the scenes change so quickly they loose the thread, not because it takes two minutes to show the wonder of say the birth; a flash back taking 10 seconds or whatever is rushing the story. i.e. I don't think much is gained by making a short version. Children love to stop and wonder where adults pass over in familarity. It is all new to them... enjoy it, dramatise the wonder... don't rush it!
I'll be going back to the original 'Jesus' movie first!... and seeing if that better meets my expectations of a film that conveys the story of Jesus in a memorable visual way to in my case young children. The ficticious characters seemed to get in the way. 』

You feel thier struggle and share in their truiumph. And laugh with their relationship. It is a feel good movie all the way through.』

(version differences) 『I already owned the plain version of this, released in 2001. The only extra on that version is the original theatrical trailer.
I just bought the "Gold Medal Edition", released 2006, because it was cheap and it had some extras that I didn't have on the other disc. (I haven't watched those extras yet, so I won't be reviewing them here.)
However, I noticed something very interesting. I played them side-by-side, using two computers with identical monitors that are calibrated identically. I noticed several differences in quality. Then I switched the DVDs to the opposite computers and played some of it again to verify that it had nothing to do with the monitors or computer settings.
The Gold Medal Edition runs 1hr:37min:17sec -- 97min, as advertised on the back of the case. The plain 2001 version runs 1:41:24, also as advertised on the back of its cover (it rounds up to 1:42). This doesn't seem to be from a difference in content, though. When playing them side-by-side, starting them off in perfect sync, they quickly become unsynchronized (ironic, considering the content... synchronized skating...). The Gold Medal Edition runs faster than the 2001 version. (The physical DVD itself isn't running faster; it's the way the film was transferred during production of the DVDs.) IMDB claims 1:41 running time (101min), which would suggest the 2001 version is correct; however, I don't know where IMDB got that data -- whether it matches the actual theatrical release or not.
Also, the Gold Medal Edition is _not_ anamorphic. So if you have a 16:9 TV (like an HDTV), unless your DVD player or TV automatically compensates, you'll actually get letterboxing both on the top/bottom AND on the left/right. The 2001 version is anamorphic, so there's a good chance it will look better than the Gold Medal Edition on 16:9 TVs.
Finally, the color balance is different, and the 2001 version looks more correct. One major thing I noticed is that when they're on the ice and/or wearing white, the whites look cleaner, brighter, and more white on the 2001 version. Whites on the Gold Medal Edition look yellow by comparison, and even a tiny bit green.
The picture looks cleaner, brighter, better color-balanced, and just better in general on the 2001 release.
If you can't find another version, the Gold Medal Edition is still ok, and you might want to buy that if you want the extras. But I'd recommend the 2001 version if you can find it, especially if you're picky about quality. The 2001 version has a fairly plain cover, with plum/purple text for the title. The cover doesn't mention anything about any kind of special edition. And the back cover will say "1 hour 42 minutes". (The Gold Medal Edition says "Gold Medal Edition" at the top, has white title text, and says "Approx. 97 Minutes" on the back.)』

(Halfway decent film) 『I have to admit, this movie is really not that scary. There are a couple predictable moments when you find yourself jumping against your better judgement, but beyond that, it's just good makeup. However, House of Wax seems to be unintentionally entertaining. The acting is amusing because it is just THAT BAD, and Paris Hilton's death scene is classic. The sets were pretty well done, and, even though you could see the end scene coming from a mile away, I still thought it was a thrilling conclusion. Overall, I think this film completely missed the mark for horror and drama, but I still found myself enthralled and wanting to watch the rest, which is why I'm giving it three stars. If you're looking for a quality film, which it sounds like some of the negative reviewers were, you won't find it here, but, if you just want a entrtaining movie and have nothing else to do, this is your kind of film.』
(A whole lotta wax) 『This movie is not an exact remake of Mystery Of The Wax Museum (1933) and House Of Wax (1953). It is a movie that has a different but mildly similar story. Whereas the 1933 and 1953 movies took place in a big city, this 2005 movie takes place in a very small and remote town in Louisiana. There ARE some similarities to the 1933 and 1953 flicks, but the similarities are loose at best. I have to wonder why they titled the movie House Of Wax, which is the same title as the 1953 movie. Maybe it was name recognition to get people in the door at the movie theater.
To me, this movie is a cross between The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the Friday The 13th movies. Right from the beginning of the movie it had The Texas Chainsaw Massacre feel to it, then the Friday The 13th feel kicked in a short time later. Much like these movies (and so many slasher horror movies including Halloween), House Of Wax features a group of teenagers or twenty-somethings who are partying and just trying to have a good time, whether its at a campground, a neighborhood, or wherever. Then somewhere along the way they run into trouble and a killer stalks them. In this movie, six college friends have their car break down in a remote area. They had been on their way to a football game. They discover a small town when they are looking for help. On the way to this small town, two of them catch a ride with a creepy, mentally sick stranger. I have no clue why these people would trust a creepy stranger like the one in this movie, or any stranger. You gotta see him to know what I'm talking about. In town there is a museum called House Of Wax. This building is literally made of wax - the walls, floors, everything. Inside are wax mannequins. To sum up the plot, the kids run into not one but two wax sculpting killers who are brothers. There is lots of blood and gore. The goal of the killers is to make wax sculptures out of the captured kids (much like in the 1933 and 1953 movies). The kids try desperately to escape the museum and the town unscathed. Four of the kids are killed off. The ending is over-the-top and memorable. This movie has lots of good special effects and props.
This movie stars the attractive Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, Brian Van Holt, Paris Hilton, Jared Padalecki, Jon Abrahams, and Robert Ri'Chard. The musical score by John Ottman is pretty good. There are a couple of "current" type of heavy rock songs in this movie that will someday date this movie.
Paris Hilton has a lesser role in this movie compared to some of the other actors. In my opinion, she did a pretty good job acting. I must say I'm surprised to see the overall rating of this movie at 3 1/2 stars after 266 reviews. I thought it would be higher. After reading a lot of the lower rated reviews it is clear that a lot of people dislike Paris Hilton. It goes beyond acting ability, which some people question, while others praise it. I think a lot of it has to do with pure jealousy, unfortunately. She's young, rich, and famous. Again, she doesn't have a huge role in this movie. But she's in this movie, bottom line, and a lot of people don't like that. She probably was put in to sell movie tickets and give the movie a boost. Personally, I forget about who she is and judge her acting ability and the character she played, which I thought passed the test. In real life she comes across as a stereotypical blonde bimbo. People can't see past that. It doesn't help that in this movie she has a striptease scene that really sticks out like a sore thumb compared to what the other actors are doing. It almost felt to me like her striptease scene was put in the movie as a sort of self-promotion. Back in 2005 she was the hottest name out there and a tabloid story every day it seemed (and still pretty much is). I've read lots of reviews where people love the fact and are gleeful that she was killed off in this movie. Some of it could be because they disliked the character she played, but some of it could be just because she's Paris Hilton.
This DVD comes with many extras, including a B-Roll and Bloopers Video Cast Commentary, an on location segment about the design of the House Of Wax, the visual effects, an alternate opening, a gag reel, and the theatrical trailer.
If you want to see a unique and creepy horror movie thriller, then I recommend this movie. This movie is better than I thought it would be. You might agree with me. And keep an open mind when it comes to Paris Hilton.』
(Mixed bag) 『House of Wax certainly had an original idea. Even though there was already a Wax movie (made over 50 years ago) this movie was still very entertaining. It had enough gore and twistedness to make it interesting. Even though I like horror movies, some parts of this movie were hard for me to look at (a good mark of a horror movie)
I didn't understand why the wax couldn't simply have peeled off Wade's skin instead of taking his skin along with it. Poor guy, he deserved better.
There were a few things about the movie that just didn't work. The scene where Paris Hilton was stripping for her boyfriend went on too long - it was clearly fanservice so boys could ogle her - but she did a decent job trying to fight Vincent off. I found the idea of a literal house of wax to be silly. Over time the floors would sag, the walls would bow, etc. (that's a lot of wax!) And the very ending with the revelation of a third child was just cheesy. I suppose it meant we can look forward to a sequel of this...
Overall a decent horror movie, most of it was good and creepy and I would have given it a higher rating if not for the bad things that I pointed out.』

Every kid needs a hero. Movies and sports work hard to supply.
Adults seek people to respect. Talent, humility, and integrity are fine beginnings.
Bruce Brown became known for his visually arresting surfing documentary Endless Summer. His camera captured the same sense of danger--and the people who respond to it--in another of film titled On Any Sunday. Much of it was shot at motorcycle competitions that were held over many weekends. It is colorful, and noisy--and quite instructive.
Viewers follow American Motorcycle Association Championship contender Mert Lawwill as he drives his van full of Harleys to dirt and road courses across America seeking to again earn the AMA championship laurels. Brown's film makes it plain that this is a lonely journey, filled with long hours, hard work and few luxuries. As we watch, it is impossible not to be impressed with the quiet, determined Lawwill.
As it happens, Lawwill also has a famous riding friend and supporter in movie star Steve McQueen. McQueen had established his riding bona fides (on-screen and off) in The Great Escape. Here in On Any Sunday we see him riding in local enduros and desert runs under a false name in order to stay under the radar of other riders and the studio bosses who didn't want their investment damaged.
Almost incidentally, we are introduced to a third character who rides with McQueen. At the time, Malcolm Smith was only known to those who followed Trials-type competitions. In Trials, riders compete, one at a time, against the clock over an extremely difficult obstacle course. Only the best ride trials. Successful competitors need patience, judgment, strength, and imagination to win. Malcolm Smith is an International Trails champion.
From the moment the slight, bespectacled, quiet Smith rides into the picture, you know that Brown has found a "natural" and the story moves from Lawwill and McQueen to this extraordinarily gifted rider. Brown is obviously awe-struck too as the tone of his very engaging narration reflects. He has crafted a film that allows us to cheer for three quite different characters, each of whom is striving toward a different goal in this dangerous and very exciting sport.
Those of us who watched this film in the theater when it first came out expected to see a movie about a movie star who was one of us and an AMA Champion. Not surprisingly, forty years later, riders remember it as the movie about the extraordinary Malcolm Smith; even today, a hero who does not disappoint.
I can't leave this commentary without relating a recent personal experience. I was being interviewed in my cluttered office by a reporter from the Providence Journal. At the conclusion of the formal interview, just as he was leaving the young man inquired about the posters on the walls. I explained to him that I had posters or pictures of the five men whom I most admired. Some he recognized but others he didn't so he asked me to identify all five. I replied, "In the realm of the arts, there are William Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, and Giuseppe Verdi. And in the world of motorsports: Juan Manuel Fangio and Malcolm Smith." Sad to say that young interviewer had never heard of Malcolm Smith.

Overall I am happy with the product. If you do sports with a lot of rapid lateral movements (like soccer), this is a very good product. Video games for girls were few and far between, and often hampered by limited game-play and stupidity. As if girls were not interested in video games because we're not any good at it, so everything had to be simplified for us.
Well, forget that.
The Nintendo DS is the first system to really try to reach out to girls by marketing a variety of games to them. I'm hugely interested in this phenomenon and have been picking some of these up to try them out and see how they compare to the games put out for boys. Some of them are an improvement over those games of my youth. Some of them are not.
Imagine Figure Skater tries pretty hard. It was an interesting idea - you choose a character, they go through a little plot, you play minigames to level up their stats, and you use the touchpad to guide them through jumps, spins, and steps to gain the position of best figure skater in the world. Sounds like a cute little role-playing game perfect for pre-teen girls, right?
Not really. The characters are way flat - I've played a good chunk of the game with two of them, and so far, they are exactly the same. At no point can you make any choices, and even leveling up is severely limited. Other than picking out your character's clothes, they are not customizable at all. The limited plot makes replaying the game, even with another character, extremely boring. So the plot aspect is like reading a really lame, easy book, badly translated from Japanese.
Ah yes, Japanese. The game was obviously originally set there (though it claims to be set in America), as the characters all wear Japanese school uniforms and follow Japanese customs. If you are not familiar with Japanese culture at all, I think the game would be a little weird. Things like the uniforms, ages of the characters and grades, and the eat-sushi-off-the-conveyor-belt game wouldn't make a lot of sense to an average American preteen. On top of all that, there are some rather embarrassing mis-translations. The only reason why a few of them made sense to me is that I took a year of Japanese in college and recognized that the phrasing and wording had been directly translated as if by a computer instead of by a person familiar with both cultures.
Okay - those things aren't the end of the world. I've encountered similar gaffs in some of those RPGs of old. But what really relegates this game to a poorly executed good idea is the stylus play doing the actual figure skating. Some of the types of moves are way easy (like moving shapes to do footwork), but some of them are way hard! The game seemed to have a hard time picking up the movements of the stylus - a major problem when that is all you are supposed to be doing! I, a full adult, got frustrated being unable to win a competition because the game just kept buzzing me instead of letting me trace a shape for a jump, or not picking up my stylus movements for the spins. Since the moves are timed (in a not very clear fashion), I often ran out of time and failed moves. I think a nine or ten year old playing this would be brought to tears of frustration over something they could do nothing about!
Overall, a cute idea, but it did not spend enough time in development and testing, particularly in the changeover from Japanese to English. Imagine: Ballet Star and Imagine: Ice Champions both make great improvements on the idea first presented with this game - and would make much better buys, either for an adult like me, interested in this girly gaming phenomenon, or for a young girl.』

(Mis-engineered?) 『This isn't a slam against Lego as a toy company, but this product is NOT one of their best engineered designs.
It is cool, no doubt. It is huge. It's got the "wow" factor. But a lot of the kids who will play with this one are under the "9-14" age bracket on the box and will play hard. This LEGO just doesn't stay together like others do.
I put this together with my son and while it took a full 30 minutes just to sort the pieces by color and probably 4 hours of total building time, he was very excited to start role playing. I was impressed initially at how it was designed and at all the neat little extras (bomb compartment, sliding gun bay, escape pod, etc.).
But it is the playing is the problem. LEGO thoughtfully designed in a handle for lifting/flying the craft. But therein lies a problem. The connecting of the floor of the ship to the superstructure isn't strong enough and several times a day the bottom literally drops out. First time he picked it up and did a sweeping "fly by" with it the whole bottom detached and flew off! This happened even with light playing later that day and following days.
Even with our own additions to strengthen it won't keep it from bottoming out. Some other pieces come off real easily during play, but that's typical for Lego's and they go right back on. But the top and bottom separating requires several minutes of re-aligning and re-attaching.
In my mind, for the high price tag (luckily I saved about $40 with holiday deals) the craft should stay together a lot more solidly for "play time" with kids.
One star for "durability" (yes, Lego's are unbreakable, but the vehicle often comes apart). The 9+ year olds won't play at the same physicality as younger kids, but this Lego is way too cool for the 8 and under crowd to skip (this was all my 6 year old wanted!).』

(Useful for Anybody Who Wants To Learn Idioms!) 『I have some dictionaries on idioms and I find this one the most helpful because it is really suitable for people who learn English as a second language. I suppose it may be really hard for them to understand idioms at first. However, they may find it useful once they get the hang of it. Unfortunately I found my several new expressions in this dictionary. However, I'm so intrigued by informative and well-organized explanations of each idiom that I would like to recommend this to those who are still struggling to learn English. The main reason is that it sure helps us reinforce our imaginations by judging the meaning from the context. Take the following sentence for example: He blew a gasket when he found out he was fired. In this case, 'to blow a gasket' is an idiom. I would guess whether the sentence means the positive or negative first. Then I would guess how I would feel if I were in his shoes. If possible, I would try to put it differently. I would express this way,"He was furious when he found out he lost his job." Now you might catch what it means; 'to blow a gasket' means 'furious' or 'very angry'. The bottom line is you will strengthen your understanding on idioms if you practice guessing what your new idioms mean from the contexts. But beware; don't overuse them. It'll make sentences unnatural or even wordy!』
(Terrible Book on the Subject.) 『Let me start by saying I love books on idioms and find their historical evolution fascinating. I was excited by the title of this book on the subject by completely disappointed by the content between the covers. Half of the descriptions have nothing other than a restatement of the phrase itself.
Another large percentage are "guesses" as to from where the phrases originated. It's a poor primer on the subject. There are many better and I'd recommend you glance through the pages prior to purchasing.』

(A Guide to Light and Shadow) 『I agree with what others have said about this book not living up to the title, I think it is really not anything approaching a complete guide to drawing the head, but still I would say this is a very good and useful book, particularly for those wishing to understand shadow and how to use it to convey form. It is, I think, perhaps better described as a book on light and shadow with the face, almost incidentally, as the drawing subject.
The book teaches the style of chiaroscuro, which here is basically explained as form described through light and shadow and not line. By copying the shadow shapes on the face, which is the essential lesson in this book, you are able to achieve more easily a realistic and recognisable portrait than if you were to have drawn with line and than later added shadow.
If you are looking to understand light and shade, beyond the usual light-shining-on-a-ball explanation, I think there is much of value here, regardless of whether you're interested in chiaroscuro or not, or the method of drawing given here. For light and shade, I have not found a better book.
The book is basically concerned with drawing from life or pictures and teaches how to translate what you see, the shadows, rather than what the various parts of the face and head are. I do not think it would a particularly useful book for those looking to learn the head in order to later draw from imagination, which I think is what one might expect from the title, nor do I see it offering much to the person who has just begun learning.』
