(Hidden Treasure) 『This CD is a gem. It is rare to be able to listen to a collection that is so consistent from start to finish. The songwriting, diversity, production and musical quality are of the highest caliber. Mr. Waite has blossomed into a mature and accomplished performer in many respects.』
(Waite's new album figures nicely into the landscape) 『Never a huge fan of the Babies or his trendy 80's pop shillings allowed me to let John Waite fall completely off of my music radar. But the maturation of his music and my own middle-age musings have brought him back. There's a consistency to this album that begs play from start to finish. Solid melodies with a straight-forward dimension showcase a tight support group of players and Waite's relatively smooth vocals. A good solid CD that will probably appeal to the late 30-something pop music fan. Fans of artist Jude Cole will either fear Waite's seeming mimic of"Start the Car"or just welcome the extension of the good music. Highlight: NYC Girl.』
(almost great) 『I let this cd pass when it came out a couple of months since I'm not a fan of John Waite's solo-work (too much pop-music to me). I don't even own most of his solo-records. But Figure in a Landscape reminds me of his work with The Babys and Bad English. Less bombastic than Bad English and more up-to-date sounding than The Babys. To me, this album ranks up with his best work: Head First (Babys) and both Bad English releases.』
(Sentimental John Waite) 『Listening to these songs in this album reminds me of the days when I first recognized John Waite. It was around 1984 and at first listen I didn't feel the song was so much special. It was not as catchy as my favorite rock hits at the time such asgEye Of The Tigerh (Survivor) or gJumph (Van Halen). But as I repeatedly heard this on the radio I found myself hooked to the song and gMissing Youh eventually became #1.
It is true that he doesnft rock hard as Bad English releases, but it is a fine album. If you like vocal featured rock such as Rod Stewart, Don Henley, Richard Marx, Eric Clapton you will love this CD for sure. The album is something like gInside Jobh (Don Henley) and gOut of Orderh (Rod Stewart) mixed. It is very sentimental album overall and might take some time to get to you until the lyrics of the song touch your heart."Always Be Your Man"standout track from this album is one of my best songs of the year."Fly"now featured on radio is fine as well. Upbeat tracks"Key To Your Heart""Thinking About You""Special One"are also good."Godhead""NYC Girl"will find adult contemporary stations' heavy rotation.
Recommended for wide range of pop rock and classic rock fans.』
『Should John Waite release an album calledNine Lives? After the Babys, "Missing You," Bad English, and even the theme fromAbout Last Night..., he could do it with a straight face.Figure in a Landscapefinds him occupied with a meld of sound and concerns that could be Del Amitri fronted by a chastened divorcee. Though obviously heartfelt songs like "Keys to Your Heart" and "Whenever You Come Around" won't hit you with surprises, they might connect depending on your own situation. What impresses is how good Waite's familiar voicesoundsin this stripped-down setting. With some luck, "Always Be Your Man" could even be a hit on those adult-contemporary stations that find room for the occasional acoustic-based, mid-tempo rocker. Waite doesn't have a masterpiece on his hands, but Rod Stewart would be proud to put his name on so much apparent truth at this stage of the game.--Rickey Wright』 『Figure In a Landscape, John Waite's (Babys&Bad English) solo debut for Gold Circle Records, represents a wonderful collection of material that John has written during the past few years with longtime collaborators like Anthony Krizan, Shayne Fontayne, Glen Burtnick and Will Jennings. From up-tempo rockers to heartfelt ballads, this enticing album has many moods.』

There is now a whole new generation of Boulez fans that has acquired its enthusiasm for Boulez's music from the works Boulez has written since 1970, from music that a friend of mine refers to as "Boulez lite." More or less contemporaneous with Boulez's most original, ambitious, and fully realized work, Pli selon pli (1962), Figures, doubles, prismes (1963; 1968) is anything but Boulez lite. This teeming work is an exhilarating ride, brilliant demonstration that Boulez was once one of the great contrapuntal masters. The elegant and ceremonial Rituel is simply not in the same league.
It's good to have recordings of the five extant Notations on a single disc, and Notations I, III, and VII in particular demonstrate that Boulez still has some of the contrapuntal and developmental powers that were at his disposal in Pli selon pli and Figures, doubles, prismes.
Figures, doubles, prismes receives a thoroughly assured and gleaming performance from Robertson and his virtuosically secure forces, although I still prefer Boulez's own magnificent Erato recording.
-david gable 』
(Robertson steps up to the podium and reveals a splendid take on Boulez's music) 『On this Naive disc, David Robertson conducts the Orchestre National de Lyon in seven pieces by Pierre Boulez. Most of Boulez's music has been conducted by the composer himself, but here the old master lets a younger generation tackle his music. The result is highly satisfying.
The first piece here chronologically is one of Boulez's most problematic. "Figures-Doubles-Prismes" (1963/1968) was first conceived in 1957. Karlheinz Stockhausen was writing his famous piece "Gruppen" for three orchestras at the time, and Boulez was interested in the unorthodox arrangement of the performing ensemble. Boulez's own approach was to use a single orchestra but to mix its segments up, with brass and wind inside the string section, resulting in exotic combinations of timbre. The result is rather disappointing, with nothing like the glittering colours of his earlier piece "Pli selon pli" or his next one "Eclat", but it does reveal a more confident pacing and powerful sense of motion that was missing from his rather lethargic 1950s works. A clear dramatic arc, however, it does not have. Boulez still hasn't finished the piece in nearly a half-century, and listening to it one can immediately tell that it's still very much a sketch for something else.
The notion of dividing the ensemble up continues with "Rituel" for orchestra in eight groups (1974/75), but here only each group is heard at a time for most of the work, and Boulez calls it "large-scale chamber music". The piece was written in memory of Bruno Maderna, a Darmstadt figure who is nearly forgotten now but who was a close friend and inspiration to many composers who came of age in the 1950s. With its solemn pace and sad, mournful tones, the piece serves as a strong antidote to that usual conservative accusation that serialism "can't communicate anything." This is Boulez's vastest work in terms of percussion, with a large amount of exotic drums, cymbals, bells, wood blocks, and so forth on the stage. Its fifteen sections consist of highly mobile even-numbered intonations, unconducted after Boulez signals their starting points, contrasted with strict conducted responses. Over the course of the work, we move from one orchestral group to another, exploring all of its timbres even though the melodic material is intentionally limited to create a feeling of sorrow. I'm familiar with Boulez's reading of the piece on a Sony disc, and I'm happy to say Robertson conducts the piece just as well.
In the second half of the 1970s Boulez wrote a brief piece for cello ensemble called "Messagesquisse" and announced his attention to expand it into a concerto for orchestra. What he came up with instead starting in 1980 was a tremendous surprise, and ended up being his most frequently-performed set of works: the "Notations" for orchestra. Five so far (I-IV and VII) they are based on twelve Webern-like piano miniatures written in 1945 while Boulez was still a student. The music was tremendously expanded in orchestration, but always retains the original at its heart. One has said of the orchestrations that it was almost as if Boulez looked at the original score with a magnifying glass and discovered more notes. The frenetic "Notations II" was only 30 seconds long in the piano original, but in orchestration was expanded to four times that length, and involves every single player in the orchestra in nearly every single barline. Much of the playing can't be immediately noticed by the audience, but serves to thicken the overall texture and power of the ensemble. Pieces I and VII are the most subtle, where the landscape of the music gradually changes on the surface, but if one listens more deeply, dozens of busy operations are at work like tadpoles in a tranquil stream.
The "Notations" are Boulez at his best, glittering textures, powerful crescendi, exciting glissandi; it's no wonder that many orchestras (such as the CSO) regularly play one or two of them to open their concerts. I was pleased that Robertson conducts them better than Barenboim, who appears on two previous recordings of the pieces. But after hearing a few bootleg recordings of Boulez leading various ensemble, I think that Robertson conducts them even better than the composer himself. Individual elements can be heard here much more clearly, and there's never any sense of muddiness.
The liner notes consist of an interview of Boulez and Robertson by Jean-Pierre Derrien. It's a very friendly introduction to the concepts behind the work and the challenges they pose for a conduction. An analysis, however, it is not, and those interested in the complex organization of "Rituel" would do well to pick up Dominique Jameux's study of Boulez and his music.
If I don't rate this five stars, it's only because my favourite works by Boulez are "Eclat/Multiples" (on a mid-price Sony disc everyone should get), and "Repons", "Sur Incises" and "...explosante-fixe..." (all on DG). Still, the three pieces here are worth hearing, even if "Figures-Doubles-Prismes" still hasn't been resolved.』
(The pupil outshines his master in a superb Rituel) 『In many ways, this is a very well-planned recording, as it features three works by Pierre Boulez, conducted by his American protégé David Robertson with the French orchestra he directed for four years, the Orchestre National de Lyon.
The disc begins with perhaps Boulez's best-known orchestral work, Rituel in memoriam Maderna, written after the death of the Italian composer-conductor who had been a father figure to Boulez and several other post-war modernists. This was the first Boulez work I heard, and it made an immediate impact on me that probably has not been equalled by any of the Boulez that I have heard subsequently: its directness of expression, emotional depth, easily comprehensible form and concentration on melody perhaps make it the most likely of Boulez's works to enter the orchestral repertoire. Over around twenty-five minutes of musical call-and-response, a melody is elaborated against a backdrop of slightly irregular percussion, the melody moving from a single oboe to larger and larger orchestral groups, until after the climax this process is reversed, and the music returns to where it began. This work has been recorded several times before, perhaps most memorably by the composer himself shortly after its composition, but I find this recording outshines both the composer's and the other readings I've heard (Barenboim, Zender). Robertson's gentle pace, tenderly shaped phrasing and eye for detail make this a powerful and emotionally intense experience and remind one that there is more to Boulez than his "iceman" image. (It would be interesting to hear Boulez record this work again--judging by his recent rerecording of Le Marteau sans maitre I suspect that a contemporary Boulez interpretation would be very similar to Robertson's.)
The next five works, from Boulez's orchestral Notations series, have a typically complicated gestation. As a teenage composition student, Boulez had written twelve short piano pieces named Notations, which were lost for many years before being rediscovered. Many years later, he started to expand each of these pieces into larger works for orchestra: I-IV appeared in 1980, VII in 1998, and more are promised (though, typically, much-delayed). The Notations so far completed tend to alternate between two styles: one rather dreamy, detailed, floating slowly between harmonies (I, III and VII) and the other fiercely violent, rhythmic and sharply accented (II and IV). The order of performance of individual pieces is left up to the conductor, though for the first four pieces the order I-IV-III-II seems to have become commonplace: Robertson adds in the more recent VII between I and IV, which makes musical and logical sense, and indeed he is particularly strong in the slower works, his unhurried approach bringing out both their warmth and the considerable detail in the writing. II and IV fare slightly less well: though under Robertson they are vigorous and rhythmic, they cannot match Abbado's earlier live recording (of I-IV) on his Wien Modern disc for sheer virtuosic energy andélan.
The closing work on the disc, Figures-Doubles-Prismes, is less essential Boulez than what has gone before. A sort of concerto for orchestra, it lacks both the sheer beauty of Rituel and the energy of Notations II and IV, though there are many fascinating details in it. Here, Robertson is in competition with the composer's own recording, and his brisk, uncomplicated approach is a contrast to Boulez's rather slower reading. I couldn't really pick a favourite between the two, though perhaps the composer's reading is slightly more characterful.
This disc can be warmly recommended for an outstanding performance of Rituel and for the best complete Notations available: fine performances of works which might well surprise those who have so far not warmed to Boulez's music.』

(Eh, solid.) 『The problem is that all these new metal bands sound the same nowadays. I can't distinguish one band from another. Soilwork, however, at least does it well. I approve.』
(1, 2, 3 . . . cook! With a chorus.) 『They do this mixed metal/pop thing pretty good, you could even imagine some strings on the chorus in "Cranking the Sirens". But good grief, this formula is so overworked at this point it's hard to take it seriously anymore. The only reason I bothered to review this is that they have a talent for writing hooks in the choruses, and that shouldn't be thrown away. If these guys dropped the speed metal riff/croaking rap vocal parts, they might actually have something that would be worth recording. I realize that would completely change who they are, but when you're tromping over the same ground time and time again, maybe change isn't such a bad thing.』
(Disappointing (2.5 stars)) 『In general, this is not a terrible album. But when you put this one up against everything else Soilwork has done, it's really not impressive. I loved the abrasiveness of Soilwork's classic A PREDATOR'S PORTRAIT, but that really doesn't show here.
FNF is composed mostly of formulaic song structure and tries a little too hard. If I didn't know Soilwork better, I'd mistake this album for an attempt at the mainstream. Don't get me wrong, there are a few saving graces. Rejection Role is a great, intense song and one of my favorites. Other than that, there are a few impressive guitar solos interspersed throughout FNF (check out The Mindmaker, Brickwalker).
Like I said, not a terrible album; I own it. But unless you're hell-bent on owning every last Soilwork album, I'd opt for APP, NATURAL BORN CHAOS, or STABBING THE DRAMA.』

(version differences) 『I already owned the plain version of this, released in 2001. The only extra on that version is the original theatrical trailer.
I just bought the "Gold Medal Edition", released 2006, because it was cheap and it had some extras that I didn't have on the other disc. (I haven't watched those extras yet, so I won't be reviewing them here.)
However, I noticed something very interesting. I played them side-by-side, using two computers with identical monitors that are calibrated identically. I noticed several differences in quality. Then I switched the DVDs to the opposite computers and played some of it again to verify that it had nothing to do with the monitors or computer settings.
The Gold Medal Edition runs 1hr:37min:17sec -- 97min, as advertised on the back of the case. The plain 2001 version runs 1:41:24, also as advertised on the back of its cover (it rounds up to 1:42). This doesn't seem to be from a difference in content, though. When playing them side-by-side, starting them off in perfect sync, they quickly become unsynchronized (ironic, considering the content... synchronized skating...). The Gold Medal Edition runs faster than the 2001 version. (The physical DVD itself isn't running faster; it's the way the film was transferred during production of the DVDs.) IMDB claims 1:41 running time (101min), which would suggest the 2001 version is correct; however, I don't know where IMDB got that data -- whether it matches the actual theatrical release or not.
Also, the Gold Medal Edition is _not_ anamorphic. So if you have a 16:9 TV (like an HDTV), unless your DVD player or TV automatically compensates, you'll actually get letterboxing both on the top/bottom AND on the left/right. The 2001 version is anamorphic, so there's a good chance it will look better than the Gold Medal Edition on 16:9 TVs.
Finally, the color balance is different, and the 2001 version looks more correct. One major thing I noticed is that when they're on the ice and/or wearing white, the whites look cleaner, brighter, and more white on the 2001 version. Whites on the Gold Medal Edition look yellow by comparison, and even a tiny bit green.
The picture looks cleaner, brighter, better color-balanced, and just better in general on the 2001 release.
If you can't find another version, the Gold Medal Edition is still ok, and you might want to buy that if you want the extras. But I'd recommend the 2001 version if you can find it, especially if you're picky about quality. The 2001 version has a fairly plain cover, with plum/purple text for the title. The cover doesn't mention anything about any kind of special edition. And the back cover will say "1 hour 42 minutes". (The Gold Medal Edition says "Gold Medal Edition" at the top, has white title text, and says "Approx. 97 Minutes" on the back.)』

A good movie for a rainy night!』 『As far as ice-skating movies go (or those that prominently feature the cold-bladed sport), this romantic movie is one of the best, thanks to utterly charming performances by underrated actors D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly. The couple play, respectively, a washed-up hockey player and a prima-donna skater who end up in doubles figure skating together at the Winter Olympics. Of course, the mismatched pair fall in love. In between, there's a lot of verbal sparring, talk of toe picks, and surprisingly skillful directing by Paul Michael Glaser (Kazaam,The Air Up There). Direction here is critical--unlike inFlashdance, where the dancing was done in the shadows, face and feet obviously shot separately--andThe Cutting Edgecredibly highlights the actors and their professional stand-ins. I have done physical therapy and have started to get back into playing, but still have some pain. This brace is fantastic. I was able to start playing again and have full support. The best thing is if you have plantar fasciitis - the straps underneath give you a great deal of support. The other half of the solution, though, is an Aircast A60. This is great for walking around - but doesn't offer the requisite support that the McDavid brace does for playing. The problem with the McDavid is that it's a bit much for non-sports use. I am a horseback rider and 5 day a week runner, and play tennis and soccer, so I need a bra that will hold everything in place, no bouncing down the street. I had found this bra years ago in the mall and loved it, I bought 5. They lasted years with heavy wear. I had trouble finding them again however, as the stores in the mall no longer carried them. I tried a few other bras in the meantime, but none of them could compare to this one. Even my old worn out champion bras were better than any new ones I tried. I was so happy to find them online, and at half the price! For big busted women who want as little movement as possible, this is the only bra for you! I will never buy another type.』
(Good support is hard to come by...) 『I have long been on the search for an affordable, high impact sports bra for well-endowed women...this is it!
I am not a small chested woman(size DD cups)and I love high impact sports, but I have had a difficult time finding a sports bra that could keep me from painfully bouncing everytime I would run or jump. This bra keeps that from happening. I no longer feel pain when playing sports or running.
I also don't feel as self-conscious when working out which is another added bonus.
The bra is comfortable and supports my chest well. There is a hook-and-eye closure with a tab cover up that snaps in the back; which is part of the reason this bra can be so comfortable, look good, and have great support.
I will continue to buy this product, as needed, in the future to keep me in my high impact sports.』
(Good bra, good price) 『Nice bra, very supportive. Velcro straps weird at first, but you get used to them. I like that is machine-washable. I'd definitely recommend.』
(Fabulous!) 『This is the greatest sports bra I have ever owned! I love the adjustable straps and that it clasps in the back. It gives me great support and keeps the girls in place when I'm jogging. I would highly recommend this bra to other large busted women.』
(decent bra) 『This isn't the absolute best bra because it does have the uniboob thing going on, but it is fairly supportive.』 『Designed for intense activity, JogBra's Action-Shape sports bra features a soft, breathable construction with moisture management, while a fully-constructed inner bra gives you the support you need.』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (i love this bra!) 『I am so happy with this bra! I am actually about to buy 2 more. I have 36DD's and I'm only 5'1 so you can imagine how my breasts are always the center of attention. With this bra on, I am so much closer to being proportional. They look natural and as a plus there is not much jiggling when I walk. Also, it is definitely comfy. I originally got the 36DD since that's usually my size....I should actually be more like a 34DDD or 34E but I can never find that. The 36DD was a bit too big so I went down to the 34DD and it fits great!』
(To good to be real!!!!!!!!!!!!) 『This is the best bra that I've ever worn Oh My GOD! i can not believe it it's so comfrotable that I feel like I don't even have it on and yes it does minimizes but YOU have to ensure that you have it adjusted correctly. The price on Amazon was a little to high for me but I still sought to buy it but before I brought it on AMazon I found it at TJMAX fo $9.99. Can you believe that so now that I have this one I want more&yes I would buy it for $32. Buy this bra we as women deserve something of comfrot especially if you wear a size 42DD』
(Not a good minimizer) 『I was very excited to order this product based on the reviews. I was disappointed when it arrived. While comfortable to wear...minimize it does NOT. It is like wearing a regular bra. Very disappointed. If you are looking for a bra that will minimize, this isn't it.』
(Great bra) 『I really love this bra. It is comfortable and you look so natural in it. My mouth hung open when my husband said "That's a pretty bra" while I was dressing! The only other time he has said that was when he saw me in the Lillyette bra # 966. I have been married 39 years, so that is a big deal to me. What more do you need ladies!』
(HATE THAT IT'S DISCONTINUED!) 『I LOVE THIS BRA&I'VE BEEN BUYING IT FOR THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS. I STILL HAVE MY YOUTH WITH THIS BRA. IT KEEPS MY UP, NOT DOWN AND NOT CONE SHARPED. I CAN WEAR IT ALL DAY WITH NO WIRE BENDING ON THE SIDE ACTION. ALSO I HAVE CLEAVAGE! LOL! BUT NOW THAT IT'S DISCONTINUED, I'M UPSET.』 『This elegant bra has fuller figure features, all without losing sight of femininity. It offers a no-poke underwire and stretch simplex fabric designed for a better fit and opacity. The embroidery subtly extends up the straps.』

Explains different types of needle felting tools and wools/fibers. This book covers just what it says - pets and small critters with a mermaid or two thrown in for good measure. No purse patterns, here :)! Many projects with very detailed color pictures for each step of each project. Starts with easier projects and builds up to small dolls at the end of the book. This book was an excellent confidence builder for a new needle felter, like me - it's given me confidence and skills to branch out and try my own designs.』
(Best book and Best seller!) 『I have dealt with Laurie before on Etsy and when I stumbled upon this book I just had to have it! It is a really great book all the things you get to make are fabulous! And the price is really reasonable! She comes up with the cutest ideas and her directions on how to make a creature are really simple, easy, and always turns out really cute! I am going to get some more for presents for my friends over the holidays, I will definitely buy more! Keep up the good work!』
(Wool Pets) 『This is a great book for beginning needle felters. It has simple instructions for beginners and all of the instructions are illustrated. I highly recommend this book if you're looking into starting this wonderful craft.』
(Doing Something Different With Wool) 『Needle felting is using wool fibers and shaping them to create an object like a butterfly, kitten, rabbit, etc. The basics are wool, a barbed needle and a foam pad, though in the materials section, the author explains in words and pictures that it can be a bit more complicated than that. For example, the basic felting needle is "...a long, sharp, three-or five-sided barbed instrument." (Page 6) Needles come in a variety of gauges and vary in the number of sides and locations of the barbs.
After an introduction that also discusses what to use as a foam pad and the types of wool, the book goes into basic techniques starting on page ten. How to properly "needle," "roll the wool,""making flat shapes," and sculpting are covered in two pages of text and numerous photographs. The photographs, like all the ones in this book are done by Kevin Sharp, the author's husband, and are fairly close in detail.
The patterns begin on page 13 with "Bug Magnets." Patterns for "Bumble Bee" and "Lady Bug" are used with the "Bumble Bee" result much more realistic looking. That is quickly followed with a "Penguin&Chick "pattern, a "Butterfly Pin" one, and a "Bunny" pattern. Each of the twenty patterns in this book ranging from a "Border Collie" (Page 74), to a "Cat" (Page 80) to a "Giraffe" (Page 104) feature a close up large and in color picture of the finished item with detailed step by step instructions along with numerous pictures during various stages of the construction process. They range from the simple such as the previously mentioned "Bug Magnets" to the complex "Mermaid" found on pages 110-117 or the "Gnome Girl" on pages 118-125.
A gallery of a few more pictures, a list of resources and a brief author bio that includes a plug for her website and business brings this 128 page book to a close.
This a fun book full of interesting patterns and techniques and one sure to entertain and enlighten creative folks. The numerous pictures taken by her professional photographer husband add a level of detail and helpfulness to the book.

(Neither Deep nor Enlghtening) 『I enjoy watching British comedies and my wife spent some time in Scotland, so I was looking for a treasure trove of slang that was not such common knowledge. On this point I was disappointed. If you have watched enough episodes of BBCAmerica you will have heard most of it.
Similarly, I was expecting a bit more depth to the list; perhaps some back story, history or examples from popular culture. Instead, it has a few pages for each section; sections revolve around food, sex, travel and the like. There is no background on the subject; it is a list of terms and their meaning. The author tries to be light and funny, but after the tenth "definition" it gets stale.
So, the lack of anything new word-wise combined with the lack of anything knew about those words makes for a dull book.
Good for those who know little about the language or don't watch British shows.』

There are 100 master drawings analysed by Robert Beverly Hale on the fundamentals such as line, light and planes, mass, position and thrust, and anatomy. These are all figure drawings. Each illustration is printed full on one page with a certain section selected for analyzing on the next. The commentary is simple and concise, providing great insight to what these artists were thinking. Many of these pieces are really sketches but when you realised the thought put behind every stroke and what the artist was trying to show, you'll instantly be enlightened.
At the end of this book, even if you can't draw yet, you'll be able to identify the difference between a good and bad drawing. And when you draw, you'll remember the principles.
This is a really useful and inspirational reference book, great for beginner to advanced artists.
Robert Beverly Hale has also authored Anatomy Lessons From The Great Masters, which uses the same teaching style here but focusing on anatomy drawings.
(There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.)』
(A great study on the mental basics of figure drawing.) 『Robert Beverly Hale's drawing books are some of the first one I go to on my shelf when looking for drawing advice. Drawing Lessons from the Great Masters is terrific book to get a handle on the mental aspects of drawing.
This book is a little more generic than his others, focusing more on a general approach to drawing and a very basic overview of anatomy.
The primary truth Hale mentions that many students fail to realize and some other drawing books skip over is that drawings aren't supposed to be a copy of real life. They're just symbolic depictions of life.
If a limb needs to be moved to make a better drawing, or if the entire lighting plan needs to be redone in your head, do it. The model is just the initial suggestion on which to base a drawing.
Where Hale's books shine is that he uses old master drawings for his examples. Basic art concepts such as conceiving body forms as basic geometric shapes to help control and simplify details are much easier to understand when you can see it in a Rubens or DaVinci drawing.
I will admit that some of his advice (like buying bones to study anatomy) may sound a tad odd. But you should remember that this book is 20 years old and draws on teaching experience for 30+ years before that. However, other than that the lessons in this book are just as important and relevant now and when they were first written.
I have a ton of drawing books, (almost literally) but this and Robert Beverly Hale's other books are some of my favorites. 』
(The Timeless Fundamentals of Drawing) 『This book is a great addition to the student of drawing's library. The author does a superb job of analyze some excellent examples of classical drawing and elucidates the formal and structural concepts in each. Although this book does not provide very much in the way of "step by step" style technical instruction, it does provide the reader with a way of conceptually approaching a drawing.
The author demonstrates where the great artist used a cylinder, or a sphere to conceptualize a part of the subject's anatomy. He shows how lines are modulated to give varying degrees of tone and shape to the figure. Many of these ideas will stew around in your head as you approach your own drawing projects. Eventually, you will notice that you are more aware of certain parts of the form and that these are being incorporated into your work. Overall, this book is a very interesting and enjoyable way of delivering basic drawing concepts to a student reader.』
(Excellent reference) 『This is an excellent text/reference for drawing enthusiasts, or students of drawing. Both the way it is broken down, and uses examples from the masters to illustrate the concepts offer a really solid grounding in how line is used to describe space, shape and tone.』
(Excellent Reference) 『This is one of the "timeless" drawing reference books every artist should look at when he/she needs inspiration. Hale picks some of the most dynamic life drawings by the old masters--Leonardo, Ingres, etc.--and disects them in terms of composition, tone, thrust, etc. He is right on in his suggestions that artists should study human and animal surface anatomy to understand the figure. I found his discussion of light and shadow especially instructive.』 『100 Great drawings analyzed/Figure drawing fundementals defined.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Excellent program, but not for art wimps..) 『After reading one of the other reviews here where the guy gave this 1 star, I had to put in my review. This is software, so if you have no ability to learn and manipulate software this isn't for you. Poser for artists is actually quite good and relatively easy to use, but you do have to learn how to use it. It will not just do it all for you. But again, the other reviewer complains that he couldn't just throw it up on his computer and instantly get the result he was looking for. Let me just say that this software isn't that tough, but you can't be an idiot either.
Who this software is ideal for: 1. Artists who need a solution for getting really tough poses with extreme perspective/ foreshortening. You can't beat it for this purpose. There are poses and angles this software can do that you cannot get from a life drawing model. Don't get me wrong, you can use this as an in house model for basic figure study and it works fine, but it can go far, far beyond that.
2. Compositions using multiple models. Combined with the above makes it stellar.
3. These are perfectly fit models. Are you tired of models that have no muscle definition in your life drawing classes.. nuff said.
Tips for posing: 1. YOU ARE WORKING IN 3D SPACE, so don't try to get some specific pose by only moving the model from one single viewpoint. The easiest way I've found to get a pose is to move around the model from face forward to side (and sometimes a top view), until you get things where you want them.
2. Move the big parts of the anatomy first. What I'm saying is don't try to get the arm into place by pulling on the hand. This is where you can get screwy results. Get your basic pose by moving larger masses like chest, femur, forearm, etc.
3. Combined with tip 1.. Keep your perspective planes in mind. For example, if you need to move the shoulder back a little bit, don't try to do it from the face forward position. If you just remember to move things from a viewpoint where you can see it move within the XY planes, you'll always get what you basically expected.』
(Could be easier..) 『Poser Figure Artist has many features that make it ideal for artists, including but not limited to realistic light and shadows and the ability to pose every part of the body, even the finger tips. It should, however, be easier to learn how to pose and move the figure. This is one program that I could not work/ manipulate without the manual, located as a PDF on the CD.』
(Good Application Overall, Some Limitations) 『This program is a very stripped down version of Poser. There is no animation in this application. It's for posing 3D figures, rendering them and exporting or printing out 2 dimensional images only.
Like many digital artists I don't have the space or money for real human models so this application should help me. To help me actually "draw" the human figure I pose it in Poser Figure Artist, render the figure, print the figure out on my printer and trace over it with paper and a pencil, or export the image (figure) open it in photoshop and use my digital tablet to draw over it. You can actually use your digital tablet in P.F.A. also if you don't want to use your mouse.
It didn't take me long to learn the interface, it's easy and even a little fun. The PDF manual will get you started but does lack some detail. I was able to get a basic pose in a short time by just playing around with the interface and not even reading the PDF manual at first.
Making a complex pose can take a while. The easiest way I found to get a specific pose is to load a pre-posed figure closest to the pose you want then tweak the pose to what you want. One drawback I found was their is no "undo" so you have to save often or have the application "memorize" your poses often as you tweak them so you can get back to a pose if you get carried away with the pose. There are lots of pre-posed figures already in the program for you. Male, female, child, skeletons and a few robot figures are in there. The figures are good and clean and well proportioned (average person height, weight etc).
You can tweak just about every aspect of the figure and add props if you like. You can change the environment the figure is in also (lighting, color and background image).
P.F.A. seems to run fine on my system running windows XP. As with any 3D program the faster the system you have the faster it will run and render. Their are some preferences you can turn down to help your system deal with large render's if you have an older computer and graphics card.
Me being a strictly two dimensional paper and digital media artist Poser Figure Artist works fine for me. If your looking for something much more involved I would get the full version of Poser. I highly recommend going to "e Frontiers" web site and reading all the features Poser Figure Artist and Poser has to offer and choosing which version of Poser works for you.
Shop around, cost for this application vary greatly (I found it on sale for 1/2 off price with optional digital down load).
Their are lots of reference web sites and support for Poser programs if you need help or information. There is a whole community of "Posers" out there. Have fun!』
(Clunky program and not a useful drawing aid) 『I brought this program to help me learn figure drawing. Theoretically, it would have been helpful to study the light as well as pose the figures as desired. To see the body in motion, the effects of movement, and the play of shadows -- this is how to bring life and vibrancy to a drawing. This program doesn't help with any of that. The figures are stiff and don't react either to movement or to objects in the environment. For example, someone sitting on a chair doesn't look like someone doing knee bends, except in this program. Furthermore, posing a figure is a very involved process, and an entirely unnatural result is very common. I tried to pose a figure on tiptoe, to see how the body mass moved, and I couldn't do it. It is possible to possible to rotate a shoulder completely out of plane with the chest and the arm, and the program will not murmur one complaint. Facial expressions are all ghastly and there isn't a simple smile in the bunch. The program runs slowly, and the opening help screens crash the program. The help manual is a PDF file and there is no written documentation besides the usual legal threats. The tutorials can get you to a basic pose, but its more effort than its worth. This program might work for someone wanting to put alien-like figures into designs on the computer page. Maybe it works great with other programs or plug-ins that I don't have, but it isn't useful as a drawing tool. 』 『Item #: M03355. I was pleasantly surprised. This is the best toy we've ever paid money for in our house! It is the only one where he will lay on the floor and play by himself, keeping himself amused for at least 10 to 30 minutes at a time (previously unheard of for us). My son doesn't like electronic toys with lots of noises so we don't even use the sounds. He loves to open and close doors and the openings are all a good size for him to fit the animals through. The silo that opens and closes is great fun for him, as is the chicken in the hayloft. As he grows into more ways to play with this toy, I can see it being a great investment for quite a while. I have since bought other little people toys but none have come close to this one. I highly recommend it.』

Lots of fun animal sounds, songs, and hours and hours of playtime fun. My oldest daughter has never tired of playing with this set, even after three years. She is now 4 years old and still spends lots of time every day playing with her farm set, and now her little sister, who is 1 year old is joining in on the playing and learning fun too! This toy is also unbelievably durable! It has been played with non stop, stood on, jumped off of (my daughter is a little dare-devil), and used so much and it is still (very surprisingly) in perfect shape - nothing has broken or come loose or anything! This is a toy that will last years and years for my 3 rambunctious kids and we also plan on saving this toy (and all of the little people toys they have,as they are all extremely durable and fantastic) for our grandkids one day! You will NOT regret purchasing this or any Little People toy! Hours and years of fun for all kids! Highly, highly reccommend!!!!!』 『With fun animal sounds all around and plenty to do, little ones will discover what a busy place the farm can be. "Neigh" says the horse,"baaa" answers the sheep, "cluck!" chirps the chicken, "moo" ... says the cow, "oink!" ... squeals the pig. They'll even discover what some of the animals feel like, when they pet the "cottony" cow, "hairy" horse, "woolly" sheep, and the "squiggly" piggly tail! It's one of those smaller sets and probably cheaper elsewhere (about half), but nonetheless, if it's gone already from your store, be sure to grab this one. It's probably one of the most durable Lego sets we've ever purchased. It even took being slammed up against a wall without breaking! Great toy, tons of fun - good ole' Squiddy's cape even comes packaged separately. Love that detail! This series is super cute anyway, and cool and is highly loved in this house. It's nice also that it contains two of the figures with this smaller set. Highly recommend!』
(Super new series!) 『Wow, are these ever neat! This was the first Space Police set to arrive in this house and was very highly anticipated. This set is very durable, doesn't take too long to assemble, but it sure does provide for tons of fun! The squidman is particularly funny - I really like these aliens over the Mars Mission series. They're just full of more character. Plus, they have a cape - does it get any cooler than that?! Anyway, this set is extremely durable for play after it is assembled and even works right in with the Mars Mission series. However, this price is very high - you can get this in town for about six bucks. Highly, highly recommend!』
(Cool Space Police starter set.) 『Very cool, little Lego Space Police starter set.
PRO's-Neat little designed 'raptor' vehicle for your Space Policeman. Front hood opens up. Back section tilts back. Squidman has a very cool head sculpt. Space Policeman has a helmet with visor you can lower and raise.
CON's-Neither Squidman nor the Space Policeman have any hand weapons. A blaster and or some kind of future 'baton' wouldn've been nice.
Good starter set for your 4, 5 or 6 year old. Easy to assemble (note the positioning on the stickers on the 'raptor' vehicle. Follow the direction closely on this).』 『Contains 42 Pieces Ages 6-12』
