The video quality on the other was poor. I decided to try Sharx camera, after reading the reviews on Amazon. I have been using this camera for a week now. It didn't need rebooting like the other brand. The picture quality is amazing as compared to other two brands that I tried.
Cons: The manual may be little a arcane for someone not very familiar with computers. But I believe this is overcome by the excellent customer support.

I got this stand to hold the iPhone securely and let me see the screen. It worked great. This is not a sophisticated device, but it doesn't have to be. It is basically a piece of thick metal, formed into the shape you see, and uses a simple rubber grommet to hold the "fingers," rubber tips to protect the iPhone, and rubber feet glued to the bottom. It's then coated with a glossy black finish. But it works great! You can adjust the tension of the fingers by prying them open a little or squeezing them closed. It can definitely hold the iPhone securely. I use it constantly every day to hold my iPhone so it can be seen. The weight is substantial, so it stays put. You can use the touch screen fine. The stand is sturdy and has some weight to it so when I receive a text it's pretty easy to reply back right on the cradle without the weight of my fingers throwing the balance of the unit off. Being able to rotate it smoothly on it's side and watch a video clip while working is also an added plus.

The iPhone, as shipped by Apple, is a wonderful device for 95% of its users. But Apple locks iPhone users into a gilded cage. The cage is sumptuously decorated, but it is still a jail cell. You are limited to using your iPhone in ways Apple approves of. "The man" (or Steve Jobs) decides what applications you can run and what capabilities your phone has. Like a bridled horse, the iPhone is docile, but unleashed, it could do so much more!
To really set the iPhone free, you need to "hack" it. Once you do this, your phone becomes the powerful computer it is meant to be, and you can run much more diverse software, giving your phone new abilities, like being able to record videos, customize the user interface, emulate popular video game consoles, and send and receive multimedia messages. You can even give your phone the ability to act as a wi-fi "access point" to the internet for your laptop, and unlock the phone to use on other carriers.
"iPhone Hacks" by David Jurick and Adam and Damien Stolarz is your guide into this brave new world. The authors act as friendly guide into the world of iPhone customization. This book is not meant for beginners; the authors assume both some technical computer knowledge and a curious nature. Some of the software-based "hacks" can be done by any experienced user, but other hacks require programming and even hardware "breadboard" skills, such as handiness with a soldering iron.
The authors first explains some of the basics of the iPhone operating system, including its history, the phone's boot process, and how the file system is put together, which is an excellent overview, before they head into the basics of "jailbreaking," which is the process where you use some simple software tools to open your phone's operating system up to customization.
I should note that many of the hacks in this book require the jailbreaking process, which, contrary to its name, is neither illegal nor very difficult. There are several hacks which do not require jailbreaking, however, these are more in the vein of "power user tips" rather then true hacks. It is worth noting that Apple will not provide warranty services to jailbroken phones - luckily, if anything goes wrong, it is very easy to "restore" your phone to pristine condition before seeking warranty service.
The actual hacks are divided into various sections by theme. The first two thirds of the book is all software-focused, and as such accessible to those without programming or hardware hacking skills. For example, there are sections on using the phone as a multimedia devices, sections on enhancing the camera and video recording functions, as well as sections on topics such as SMS messaging, gaming, and user interface customization. Any of these sections can be accessed in an ad-hoc manner; there is no need to go in order after the initial chapter on the jailbreak process itself. Simple pick the topic you are interested in and dive in. It is easy to browse the book to get an idea of what the iPhone can do, and all of the chapters are very clearly explained, with excellent use of screenshots and supplementary information to guide you in the process.
The final third of the book covers both application programming, and actual hardware hacking, including how to disassemble and reassemble your phone. Many of the hacks in this section are very entertaining to read about (and fairly useless in a practical sense), especially since it would take someone way braver then me to actually crack open my phone's case! The programming section is a useful introduction to both the official Apple-provided way to program for the iPhone as well as the unofficial ways to get access to private APIs and methods which can be used to program applications that could never make it into the App Store.
More controversially, "iPhone Hacks" also describes the process to "unlock" your iPhone (this is different then "jailbreaking") so you can use it on a carrier other then AT&T. This information is presented fairly and accurately, with both the risks and rewards clearly outlined for those users who may need to use an iPhone on another carrier. The book also describes how to activate tethering, where you can use your iPhone as an internet access point for your laptop. This may violate your contract with your carrier, but the book doesn't moralize here; it simply describes the "hack" and leaves the decision as to how to use the information up to you, the reader, which is as it should be.
Overall, this is an amazing book, clearly and thoroughly describing the dozens of ways you can truly make your iPhone your own. It manages to cover challenging information fairly and accurately in a manner that will appeal to any adventurous, curious and technically-minded reader. Even if you never plan to do anything other then the tamest "hacks" to your iPhone, browsing this book will teach you a lot about your phone as a computer, and leave you stimulated and fascinated.』 『

iPhone: The Missing ManualSneak Preview: David Pogue's Favorite iPhone Tricks
The iPhone's finger-driven interface seems natural and obvious. But when you really think about it, making it seem that way was no easy task. There are no menus in the iPhone software, for example, and no checkboxes or radio buttons. Everything on the screen has to be big enough for a fleshy fingertip.
On the other hand, the finger makes an outstanding pointing device; heck, you've been pointing with it all your life. It's much faster to scroll diagonally with a fingertip, for example, than with fussy adjustments on two different scroll bars.
Here, then, are some of the iPhone's unadvertised taps, double-taps, and other shortcuts, all culled fromiPhone: The Missing Manual.
Double-Tapping
Double-tapping is actually pretty rare on the iPhone. It's not like the Mac or Windows, where double-clicking the mouse means "open." On the iPhone, you open something withonetap.
A double tap, therefore, is reserved for three functions:
In Photos, Google Maps, and Safari (the Web browser), double-tapping zooms in on whatever you tap, magnifying it by a factor of two.
In the same programs, as well as Mail, double-tapping means, "restore to original size" after you've zoomed in. (Weirdly, in Google Maps, you use a different gesture to zoom out: taponcewithtwofingers. That gesture appears nowhere else on the iPhone.)
When you're watching a video, double-tapping eliminates or restores letterbox bars.
See, the iPhone's screen is bright, vibrant, and stunningly sharp. It's not, however, the right shape for videos. Standard TV shows are squarish, not rectangular. So when you watch TV shows, you get black letterbox columns on either side of the picture.
Movies have the opposite problem. They'retoowide for the iPhone screen. So when you watch movies, you wind up with letterbox bars above and below the picture. Some people are fine with that. At least when letterbox bars are onscreen, you know you're seeing the complete composition of the scene the director intended. Other people can't stand letterbox bars. You're already watching on a pretty small screen; why sacrifice some of that precious area to black bars? That's why the iPhone gives you a choice. If you double-tap the video as it plays, you zoom in, magnifying the image so that it fills the entire screen. Part of the image is now off the screen; now you're not seeing the entire composition originally broadcast. You lose the top and bottom of TV scenes, or the left and right edges of movie scenes. If this effect winds up chopping off something important--some text on the screen, for example--restoring the original letterbox view is just another double-tap away.
Secrets of the Sensors
The iPhone has three cool sensors. First, it has an accelerometer that detects when you've rotated the iPhone into landscape orientation. In programs like Photos, Safari, and iPod, it triggers the screen image to rotate as well.
Camouflaged behind the black glass where you can't see them except with a bright flashlight are two more sensors: a proximity sensor that shuts off the screen illumination and touch sensitivity when the phone is against your head (it works only in the Phone application), and an ambient-light sensor that brightens the display when you're in sunlight and dims it in darker places.
Apple says that it experimented with having the light sensor active all the time, but it was weird to have the screen get brighter and darker all the time. So the sensor now samples the ambient light, and adjusts the brightness; it does this only once--each time you unlock the phone after waking it.
You can use that tip to your advantage. By covering up the sensor (just above the earpiece) as you unlock the phone, you force it to a low-power, dim screen-brightness setting (because the phone believes that it's in a dark room). Or by holding it up to a light as you wake it, you get full brightness. In both cases, you've saved all the taps and navigation it would have taken you to find the manual brightness slider in Settings.
Earbud Cord Switch
Without close inspection, you'd have a hard time telling the iPhone's white stereo earbuds apart from a regular iPod's--but don't get them mixed up. The iPhone's earbuds have a tiny, embedded clicker/microphone partway down the right earbud cord.
That's right, "clicker/microphone." The tiny bulge is the microphone for phone calls. But if you pinch the bulge, you'll find that it clicks.
Pinch once to answer an incoming phone call. Pinch for a couple seconds to dump the call to voicemail. (You can also double-tap the Sleep/Wake switch on top of the iPhone to send the call to voicemail.)
During music or video playback, pinch once to pause the music; pinch again to resume playback.
During music playback, double-pinch to skip to the next song.
Customizing the iPod Buttons
The iPod module on the iPhone starts out with buttons along the bottom for summoning four lists: Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.
But what about Albums? Genres? Composers? They're there, all right, but hidden; you have to tap More to see them.
But what if you use those lists more often than Artists or Songs? No problem: you can replace one of those starter buttons with a list of your own.
Tap More, and then tap the Edit button (upper-left corner). You arrive at the Configure screen. Here's the complete list of music-and-video sorting lists: Albums, Podcasts, Audiobooks, Genres, Composers, Compilations, Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Videos.
To replace one of the four starter icons, use a finger to drag an icon from the top half of the screen downward, directly onto theexistingicon you want to replace. It lights up to show the success of your drag.
When you release your finger, you'll see that the new icon has replaced the old one. Tap Done in the upper-right corner.
Keyboard Speedups
Don't bother using the Shift key to capitalize a new sentence. The iPhone does that capitalizing automatically. Don't put apostrophes in contractions, either; the iPhone will put those in for you, too.
Force Quit, Reset
The iPhone is pretty darned simple and stable, but it's still a computer. In times of troubleshooting, these tips may come in handy:
Force quit a program.Press and hold the Home button for six seconds to force-quit a program that seems to be stuck.
Reset.If the entire iPhone locks up--it can happen--press and holdboththe Home button and the Sleep/Wake switch for eight seconds. You'll see the screen go black, and then the Apple logo appears as the iPhone reboots.
McCallum's Awesome iPhone Period-Typing Shortcut
I have in my possession a nugget, a secret bit of iPhone information that's so valuable, such a headache- and time-saver, that I don't know what to do with it.
One voice in my head says, "Hoard it! Keep it a secret until your book is published! If you reveal it, it'll be all over the Net in hours, and all your competitors' books will have it, too."
But another voice says, "But this information is too good to keep quiet. Plus, you didn't discover it yourself. And besides, you're not gonna starve, either way."
Eventually, the second little voice prevailed. I'm going to share with you the solution to one of the most annoying things, if not THE most annoying thing, about typing on the iPhone:
The punctuation keys and alphabet keys appear in two different keyboard layouts.
So every time you want to type a period or a comma, it's a three-step, awkward dance: (1) Tap the ".?123" key in the lower left to summon the punctuation layout. (2) Type the period. (3) Type the ABC key in the lower left to return to the alphabet layout.
Imagine how excruciating it is to type, for example, "a P.O. Box in the U.S.A.!" That's 34 finger taps and 10 mode changes!
And therefore imagine how thrilled I was to receive an email from reader Andrew McCallum, containing a method of typing a period or a comma with only a SINGLE finger gesture.
The iPhone doesn't register most key presses until you *release* your finger. But Andrew discovered that the Shift and Punctuation keys register their taps on the *press-down* instead.
So here's what you can do, all in one motion:
1. Touch the ".?123" key, but don't lift your finger as the punctuation layout appears.
2. Slide your finger a half inch onto the period or comma key, and release.
Incredibly, the ABC layout returns automatically. You've typed a period or a comma with one finger touch instead of three. In fact, you can type ANY of the punctuation symbols the same way.
This makes a HUGE difference in the usability of the keyboard.

(A must have for anyone new to iphone dev.) 『Before my review I want to tell you about my background. I have been a web developer (html,dhtml,js,ajax,php,asp,asp.net,cfm) since 1999. I have also done a ton of client server apps on windows with unix / oracle backend. Just recently i released three apps on the android os, with one of them being a phonegap app. So my understanding of programming and is pretty extensive. I have also taken the Stanford iTunes course on iPhone development, which is a must do for any wannabe iPhone dev.
For me I wanted to be able to utilize my abilities to develop apps efficiently. Since I am not a huge fan of Obj-C, I couldn't do that with the native language of the iphone. This book helps you understand how to utilize the main functions of the phone (play sound / accel / gps) without having to write much Obj-C.
As far as moving Dashcode to xCode, this is a very simple process. Once you learn it, which it only takes one time doing it, you will fly through it. I do remember seeing a video the author posted on his website on how to do this. So if you struggle understanding how to migrate the source from Dashcode to xCode, take a look at the authors site.
Something that is really nice that the author did was include a ton of examples on how to use QCiPhone. This includes Dashcode and xCode examples. It includes a nice map example. However it is not the embedded 3.0 map, it is a little different but still works nicely. It allows you to place pins on the map as well as use your fingers to pinch and expand.
So far the book does not mention the use of google group the author set up. If you have questions, you can always post them on the QC google group. Which I have been out there many times searching for methods other users have posted. You can also communicate with the author directly on that site. He is very helpful.
I like how the author has given you a nice model to follow, ie. Validation Control Functions, Business Control Functions, View Control Function, and Error Control Functions. By following this model, you can create a nice modular app with reusable code.
Overall, the book is a great place to start developing your first web app that you put on the app store. 』
(Ugh! 10 pages in...) 『I was very excited to get this book, as I had pre-ordered it before it was even published. I received it today and was surprised by how thin it was, 172 pages not counting the appendices. Not a big deal, though I'm used to huge volumes with other programing/development related books. In fact, it's nice not having to lug around a 20-pound volume.
The author dives right in on the subject in Chapter 1 discussing two distinct methods for developing iPhone apps with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Applications can be deployed as full-fledged iPhone apps (not requiring hosted server files) or as iPhone web-apps (requiring hosting files on a server). The author goes on to explain how this is possible using Apple's iPhone SDK and either, QuickConnectiPhone or PhoneGap, both of which are JavaScript APIs. The author, Lee S. Barney, is actually the creator of the QuickConnectiPhone (hereafter, QCIP) project.
The first project uses the QCIP method in Dashcode, part of Apple's iPhone SDK, and is essentially 5 easy steps in a 'Hello World' project. Button, text, click button, text changes. Note, this doesn't actually create a final iPhone app proper, rather it creates a demo that will run in the iPhone simulator, sans the app button. Part two describes how to import the files you have just created into Xcode, another part of the iPhone SDK, to compile a finished iPhone app.
The problem is, that right out of the gate, the demo throws a compiler error and doesn't work as intended. After several re-reads of the text to make sure I'm not brain-farting, I begin digging into the code to find that the main.js file has some functionality that has been code generated that is creating the error and that seemingly has nothing to do with the demonstration at hand. I comment that functionality out, and the demo runs without error.
Step Two involves importing the files that were created in Dashcode into Xcode. Suffice it to say this is quite a lengthy multi-step affair, that is not as simple as going to the File menu and selecting Import files. I say this for any one who has not used Xcode before. It is software that many HTML/CSS/Javascript developers will find daunting. If you've used Xcode before, no big surprises, though much time is spent undoing things and deleting things, moving files around, etc. It seems that a better written QCIP project template could have handled alot of that, but then again, I've never written an Xcode project template before and am a novice Mac programmer.
The authors explanations in Step Two already have my head spinning and I can see that I am going to need to go though this material very slowly. The authors instructions read like a run on sentence with no pauses in between "do this" and "then click on that", making it rather hard to follow along, especially given the small, IMO, font size and tight leading of the text. The structure of the steps and explanations could have been written in a format that made following them easier.
To qualify this review, I will state that I have been a web designer/developer for about 8 years, using HTML, CSS, PHP, Lasso, ColdFusion and JavaScript. I just got into iPhone development within the last couple of months and was hoping this book would provide that "Ah, Ha!" moment, allowing me to develop iPhone apps without having to learn Objective-C. Even though the book suggests this is possible, it's contents are full of Objective-C explanations, code and methodologies.
Searching the publishers website, I could not find an errata to help with the problems I was having, albeit the book was just published this week.
I do like the premise the author has created with his methods, along with the QuickConnectiPhone framework, he is obviously a very smart individual on the subject.
Perhaps, the book has been rushed to market. The again, perhaps too, is this review.
I will keep working with the material in this book and am hopeful it turns a corner somewhere. If so, I will be sure to revise this review. If not, I'll be taking at least one of my stars back. 』 『

Everything is Apple proprietary. Unless you are one of those people who likes redoing something that is working perfectly fine there is no simple way to transfer your MP3 music to the iPod. Don't plan on having your iPod Nano up&running for a couple weeks.
Unless you currently have an iPod or an Apple Computer all your music has to be converted to their iPod format.
You have to subscribe to the iTunes store and give them your credit card
All of my CD's are backed up on my external hard drive, I have never downloaded a song legal or illegal, yet it told me I needed a license agreement.
I have a folder with the top hits from each CD, it contains 247 songs. When I loaded that folder into the iPod it only accepted 26 songs. It said the others were not compatible.
When I tried to load them individually it said I needed to download a license agreement. When I clicked on the get license agreement it told me ("Browser does not have "Microsoft Windows Media Services" plug ins installed). Note: my Dell notebook computer is less than a year old.
If you use Firefox you cannot download the license agreement or the Microsoft plug ins you have to go back to Internet Explorer.
