I have been an avid X10 user for 10 years. I recently purchased an Iphone - how cool would it be to use it as a controller for home automation ? Pretty cool if you want to replace your existing X10 network with the newer more expensive Insteon devices. This controller certainly could have been a 5 star if it was able to control X10 but all you get is a manual control panel that you must navigate to in the software. I was sadly disappointed and returned mine as I am not going to upgrade all my devices to Insteon at one time to be able to use my existing network.
Awesome product, but I think the title is a bit overstated, I wouldn't call it a central controller. It does have a lots of cool features, but falls short of "Central controller", but it is an awesome (sorry for repeating, but it it really IS awesome) iPhone/iPod-touch API with some additional functionality like simple timers.
You will not be able to execute any automation scripts, but it is great for simple schedules, and oh, camera support is such a nice touch.
So, if you won't pick on title, this device is totally deserves 5 stars.

Pros:
One unit, less clutter, good workmanship, solid, powered hub.

Cons:
USB hub acts a bit odd sometimes, e.g. with some USB flash drives. It is really weird that iPods won't charge via the built-in power connection (they charge from the computer's USB input). Reads Memory Stick Duos, but good luck getting them out of the slot again, full-size Memory Stick Adapter required.

Other:
Line-out would have been nice but this dock is meant to be used with a computer, through which the audio would play presumably.

Overall a good buy though, especially since many multi-function card readers are no longer including CF capabilities.

Hi All,

I bought this Simplifi to do two things....one to clean up my desk and get rid of the various usb cables and memory card adapters laying around, and two so I could drop my iPhone 3g in to the dock and let it sync/charge at night when I get home. It does both things and it does them perfectly. What I love is the look of the device...its completely Appleized ( a new verb perhaps :-)). It reminds me of a miniature airport extreme/apple tv with the rubberized bottom. The device is weighted perfectly so that it will not tilt when you put a ipod, iphone, etc. on it.

The box includes:
The simplifi.
An AC Adapter @ 5v.
A Mini USB to USB Cable.
Adapters - 9-10-11-12-13-14 (iPod Classic 80, iPod Classic 160, iPod Nano 2nd Gen, iPhone (1st gen and 3g), iPod Nano 3rd gen, iPod Touch, iPod video 5th gen 30 and 80gb models, iPod shuffle (via usb ports on back).

The unit basically has a dock on the top and memory card readers in the front that read Compact Flash, SD, XD, and Memory Stick. The back has the connection from the device via mini usb to the computer (using included usb to mini usb cable) and 2 extra usb ports.

There are some issues that people are having, not necessarily for me, that are related to the iPhone/iPod's not charging unless the USB is plugged into the computer. My thought here is that you are buying a device which does more then just charge an iPhone/iPod...it is a USB hub and memory card reader. More then likely you will always have it connected via USB to your computer and always have the adapter plugged in so that the USB portion is powered. I would not worry about such an issue...it is not a deal breaker.

It is a great device and every function works perfectly well...I have had zero issues reading SD and Compact Flash cards, I have had 100% success with my iPhone 3g and my 160gb iPod classic. I have tested it on a MACBOOK, a Mac Pro, and a IBM Thinkpad w500 running windows 7. So YES...it is a cross platform device.

Other then that Amazon shipped it quickly and saving on tax/shipping via 2nd day made it a easier purchase then it normally would have been.

PS. One other thing that I failed to mention that is a bit of a nuisance is that the included mini-usb to usb cable is a BIT short....it seems sized if you were placing this next to a laptop or attaching to the back of a apple display with usb. In no way is this cable long enough to reach a desktop pc/mac pro, etc... Luckily mini-usb to usb cables are not expensive and readily available. I was looking for a reliable 802.11 wireless monitoring camera. I tried two other brands. One would need rebooting every few hours to keep it functional. The video quality on the other was poor.
I decided to try Sharx camera, after reading the reviews on Amazon.
I have been using this camera for a week now. It didn't need rebooting like the other brand. The picture quality is amazing as compared to other two brands that I tried.

Cons:
The manual may be little a arcane for someone not very familiar with computers. But I believe this is overcome by the excellent customer support.

Pros:
Excellent Video Qaulity.
Reliable Motion Detection.
Excellent Customer Support.
Good integration with free dynamic dns, for accessing it from outside (linksys required paid service)
Email from Gmail SMTP server using port 465 (Not possible with the other two brands that I tested)
Moonlight mode for night video
Overall a very well balanced and reliable camera.
Purchased this camera and setup as a babycam. Worked fantastic and really good images in little to no light in the baby's room at night! For users only working on IE - I'd highly recommend it.

I ended up, however, purchased the new 2607 version instead. This new version works great on non-IE browsers and works perfectly on my iPhone. I now have an icon on my iPhone now with the babycam and can view it either inside or outside of my house. One of the best customer support experiences I've every had by SecurCam folks in moving to the 2607 version and would not hesitate to purchase from these guys again.

Please see my review on the 2607 version for additional details (since many of the comments on setting this up as a babycam apply to both versions)... All-in-all - awesome cameras...
The manual is horrible, so give them a call if you get stuck, but the product works as they say it does, shipping is swift and phone support is among the best I can remember. Recommended.

I have two of these cameras for my rental property as well as my home. The IR works great in complete darkness. Very good picture in daylight and low light conditions. The customer support from Securcam can't be beat. I also have two of the Sharx PTZ cameras which are very good also.

I live in the country where wildlife is abundant and often wander near my back yard during the day and night.

I recorded the deer fight video using the Sharx SCNC2601. I attached an external mic to increase audio levels. It's amazing the sounds it will pick up while viewing or recording video.

I also enjoy being able to pan and tilt the camera so that I can follow any action shots.

You can't go wrong with this camera when used for security or wildlife viewing and recording from anywhere in the world.

I plan on purchasing more of these cameras in the near future. I also purchased the SCNC2606 so that I can watch live streaming video of wildlife on my smart phone.

These cameras are easy to setup and the price tag isn't bad either. :-)
I really researched IP cameras and my decision came down to this camera and a Panasonic camera. The Panasonic camera was more expensive, but had a ton of reviews, most saying good things besides it being difficult to setup. The Sharx camera was cheaper and had more features (2-way sound/audio), but my main concern was lack of reviews online. I took a leap of faith and decided I would rather get a product that has more features and a lower price. I am so glad I did! This is a great and easy-to-use product. I had a little difficulty with setup (I accidentally skipped a step) and begrudgingly called tech support. I was pleasantly surprised - this is the best tech support I have ever dealt with! The person who helped me knew exactly how to deal with my specific operating system as well as my specific router. With his help, it was extremely easy to get my camera configured properly on my router. I strongly recommend this product - it comes with the same features of cameras 5x more expensive. And you can be comforted knowing that if you aren't an experienced techie, you will have an easy time configuring the camera with the help of their top-notch tech support!

The previous reviews regarding the quality and flexibility of the camera along with ease of installation are spot-on, so I won't repeat them.

However, the previous reviews said nothing about the tech support offered by SecurCam (aka Sharx Security) which is also awesome. First, you talk with a highly competent tech that knows the product intimately and is not in India. Second, they really want to help - I called one evening, got voicemail, and decided to not leave a message but call back later. A while later I got a call from them - they used caller ID to call me to see if there was something they could help with!

Just buy it - you won't regret it.
I have been looking for a network PTZ camera and thought I was going to spend $1,500 for a decent one. For less than $200, the Sharx does a lot more than I expected.

At first, I was hesitant to go wireless so not to clog up the WiFi LAN. I saw that the Sharx did both RJ45 and WiFi G, so I could chose which later. I found since that the bandwidth consumption at 30fps is actually pretty minimal.

I run Firefox on XP, and the web interface will not work without a couple steps. First, enable UPnP in your Windows Components/Networking Services to display the camera as a network component. Second, Google "Firefox IE Tab" and download and install the plug-in. Third, under Tools in Firefox, add the camera's IP address in IE Tab Options. There are a couple Internet Options to check described in the manual if it doesn't go the first time. After that, accept the program installations. It is easier than it sounds and works with Vista as well.

Once I had it running on my desk, it was time to mount it. I didn't like the look of the swivel mounting bracket, but I found that there is a flush mount bracket included. No wiring passes through the swivel bracket, so it can be discarded. While the housing has the look of a weatherproof enclosure, the RJ45 socket and other plugs are exposed, and I would try to keep it out of direct contact with the elements. I have mine attached to the underside of the roof, out of the rain, anyway.

Other than getting the wall wart power, on WiFi there were no wires to pull. Click on the network icon for the camera and it launches the browser interface. The pan/tilt controls seem clunky, but if you set some of the 8 preset choices, the camera will zip over to each location and return without trouble. The camera's internal microphone will pick up conversation ten feet away, but also captures the mechanical noise of the pan/tilt. An external mike plugged into the mini phono jack on the camera will cure this. There is also mini phono for an external speaker, so that you can talk back to whoever is there through the interface.

The interface will do both FTP and email alerts, with a zone-select motion detector function. The interface can be configured to run multiple cameras or open each in an individual window by the IP address. Once you have the right ports enabled on your router, you can access the interface remotely via the intertubes. The zoom function is only enlarging part of the received image, so don't expect much. It would be nice if the interface could reorient the image as it pans and tilts, I find myself trying to stand on my head to figure out what is in the picture sometimes.

Instead of spending $1,500, I got an easy to use camera that does everything I need (and a few things more) for less than $200.

I was actually talking to my cats through the camera and scanning around my livingroom while sitting at my desk at work. How cool is that? The cameras two-way audio feature let me talk to my cats AND listen to them too. While MY cats didn't respond very well, I bet if someone used this feature with their dogs they would have a great response from them. I am just thinking of all the great uses this camera could have. While I use it to just to check in on my cats, I think it would also be great to check on the house while on vacation, as a baby monitor, for a business, etc. I highly recommend this camera!

Yes, the sound is good - *not* "great" because there is some static at the mid-high range.

But - and this is a big "but" - using it with an iphone (3G) is a *pain*.

I read reviews telling me this but decided to buy this unit because of other reviews that told me not to pay attention to the naysayers. I wish I had paid more attention!

The iphone works with this unit *only* when using the adapter. Even then, the iphone has to sit on the dock as if it wasn't using an adapter (i.e. the portal meant for those who are not using an adapter). This is not, in and of itself, a huge pain but if the unit is moved for any small reason (like when you want to skip a song on ipod or pandora or when the table it is sitting on moves due to *any* slight movement), it stops playing. You have to then re-jig it on its adapter.

Overall, I would rate this unit as average. Looks nicer than most; has a good sound, can work with iphone *but* with a lot of *buts*!

Not impressed. Wouldn't buy again. But, then again, not sure what I would buy. Basically, I guess I need to wait until the industry which gets away with selling us only mediocre products is forced to sell us something that works as advertised.

Needless to say, given all the other catastrophes of "industry," I won't hold my breath!

This has been one of my fantastic buy for my ipod, the speaker is just good, and you can buy this blindly. Sound is very good, and the simple functions on the remote are what you would need when you relax and enjoy the music.

Very good sound quality, handles Bass very effectively, although i am more of a treble person, i enjoy the crisp sound when i increase the treble.

For this price, this is the best you can get, if you are looking for a decent sound from such a small speaker go for it. VALUE FOR MONEY.

Positives-

- Works with all models of Ipods (but NOT the Shuffle). It is important to note that a plastic insert needs to be added for use with the Iphone (see video). Without using the insert you will get an error message on your Iphone.
- Charges your Ipod
- Will stop playing music and engage the ringer if you get a call on your Iphone.
- Small enough to be highly portable
- Attractive look
- Fully functioning remote - a bit flimsy but it does do the job

Areas to improve

- To me - the sound is a bit flat. The unit would be well served to have more bass response. One solution could be a subwoofer output (This is what cost it one star).
- Would prefer if it was rechargeable - but too be honest it would require a pretty good size battery.

Final Verdict -

A nice choice for this price point. I would prefer a richer sound, but the positives certainly outweigh the negatives - and it may be the best Ipod speaker on the market. This is a great choice for everyone but true sound snobs.

COMMENT - I am getting feedback on my statement that "The sound is flat" Here is my explanation.

I guess I am a bit of an audiophile, but the speaker does not have the bass response to be considered "full". If you were to look at a frequency response chart I would say that the speaker probably fades at about 80-90HZ (although it claims 60HZ on the packaging). In truth, the speaker is unable to move enough air to be effective at frequencies below... say 200HZ.

I have purchased 2 of the T612 digital speakers to use with my iPhone. I like the simplicity of the controls, sound quality and the overall look of the product.

I don't like not finding the cradle adapter in the box that allows the iPhone to "dock" with the speaker. Two purchases and two times that the cradle was not in the box. The cradle that was included was a close fit but I could not get a connection that made the iPhone and Speaker work without error messages displaying on the iPhone.

I was lucky enough to have extra cradles from older Altec Lansing speakers I had used with my iPods. This solved my problem but others that don't have spare parts from previous speakers need to watch out for this simple oversight.

I ordered these for my 15 year old son based on their claimed ultra rugged durability. The earbuds worked for only two months, then one of the buds failed. I tried contacting JLabAudio using the contact information found on their web site, but have still not heard back from them. I then contacted Amazon directly, and Amazon did agree to replace the earbuds at no cost.
Bought in Nov. 2008. The thing is broken in May 2009. The sound in the human voice range completely lost for some strange reason. I used the product with care. No physical damage to the earphone, looks almost like a new one. Two emails and one message through their website to the company result no reply. Called them, the person took the phone said he will shipped me a new one tomorrow. More than one month later, I still don't see the earphone. I don't see them providing the one year warranty.

I bought Altec Lansing UHP336 to replace JBud2. Altec earphone is much better. Much better, stronger base. The high range is as clear as JBud2 if not more clear.
The ear buds that came with my Ipod are far superior to the J2. Don't waste your money on these JBuds. The bass level crackles and breaks up. I am a professional cellist and use my Ipod to study music; for me they are unusable. "Premium" in the name is a poor joke. I
While well constructed, the J2's are some of the WORST sounding earbuds I've ever had the misfortune to waste money on. They are hard to fit in your ears, and the "engineering" that went into these puts the driver in some kind of tube. The effect is that sound is muffled, hollow, and the audio experience is just poorly crafted. Trables are harsh, mids are non-existent, and bass is a distorted mess.

If you have any respect for yourself, and your ability to judge sound, stay FAR FAR AWAY from these buds. They are AWFUL. Sorry Jbuds, this is an epic fail.
I bought my pair in last month and after a month of regular usage, sound from both earbuds has become barely audible. Even with the volume turned way up, the sound stay very low. The initial sound quality was good, but what's the use if they can't last a month.

What's worse is that their customer service seems to have gone missing too! I emailed their customer service for help a week ago but no response. Their toll-free number just goes to voicemail no matter when I call and no response either after leaving a voicemail.

For $0.01, it cant be any better. Slightly thicker than the expensive protectors, which I bought and due to the air bubbles that were created right after applying it, I thought I will not buy another one with the same price. Found this one and I am very happy with it. Will definitely recommend to a friend.
Great screen protector, perfect fit, thicker than you think. My continuing problem is that I live in the desert and you cannot escape the dust. There's always one speck that gets by. Ugh! That being said, these are really easy to apply and they work very well. What, are you nuts? Use a screen protector!
3rd protector I've tried for my iPhone. Worst one by far. Makes the screen look horrible.
I tried one other screen protector on the cheap, and I couldn't get it on correctly. One try is all you get with some of these (yes i know the packaging has instructions, but seeing and doing is often very difficult, and I was being very careful).

This product is nice because even if you are a klutz, you get two more tries to get it right. The package comes with 3 of the included screen-thingys and also 3 polishing cloths. The outside wrapper is very gaudy and super Japanese, but don't let looks deceive you. This screen protector applied very easily with holes cut out for the ear speaker and the home button. I had actually applied it slightly off center, and it actually allowed me to peel it right back off and put it right back on, no fuss or mess involved. So I still have 2 extras.

I have accumulated some gritty grime (very very minor) around the edges, and you can see the faint smudges of fingerprints when you hold it in the light, but this has not hindered perfect performance (and my rubber case hides everything but the screen anyway).

Not much more I could say. Quality performance in a screen protector, low low price, and you get 3 of them. A good buy.

Was surprised after the other two reviews. But, it fit my 3gs perfectly. Seems pretty good quality as well. Although it's a plastic case, it still has a bit of rubbery feel that gives you a bit of grip. Very satisfied.
I was able to get mine onto my phone but the first time I tried to take off the bottom piece to dock my iPhone the piece broke into three. Waste of money.
This case did not fit the new iPhone 3G S as advertised, it is about 2mm too short. I tried numerous times to make it fit, but there was no way to make it work. To make it worse the provided screen protector used those little peel apart tabs that left adhesive residue that could not be removed, even with rubbing alcohol, effectively making it useless. This all was a shame since it did seem to be made of a durable material and the inside of the case had a felt material to prevent scratches to the back of the case. Ultimately, I would advise new 3G S owners to look elsewhere.

The pen is useless for anything other than pressing buttons. You can't use it for any gesture such as wiping because the rubber tip just drags on the screen. I thought the pen would have a stylus tip but it doesn't - it's just like an eraser. At least I only lost $3...
I purchased multiple copies of this pen; intending to use them in different settings (home, office, etc.).

The pen does not work, period. Save your money. Don't waste your time or money on this product.
Although this iPhone stylus looks more professional than the looped top one, don't go here.. this one and the silver one like it suck big time. I purchased both of them and the tip doesn't work very well, the conductivity of it don't work on the iPhone very well at all. Save your money and go with the looped top looking one , it actually works better.
Earlier research stated that stylus pens do not work with the 3G iPhone but this pen works like a true champ! I am using the pen to write this review and it really, really works! I purchase the silver stylus pen and it didn't work but this one does.

This item looks good, but unfortunately the glue holding the tabs on the ends together tends to come off onto the phone. Perhaps it's just the heat of the Arizona summer, it may work better in cooler climates.

A very nice holster for the iPhone. First, to answer a question I had before I bought it: Yes, it will hold an iPhone 3G that's inside a Griffin Clarifi case and likely other cases of similar bulk.

I like that it's a magnetic closure; no "rip" of Velcro when I try to sneak it out of the holster during a meeting.

It holds the iPhone snugly, perhaps a little too snuggly at the moment, but as the leather relaxes over time I prefer it to be a little tight to begin with.

I prefer the horizontal holster as it's low profile and stays out of the way. The belt hook is reinforced with metal at the end so it won't fray and get in the way as you try to get it on your belt over time. It's just a very nice, relatively low cost holster.

UPDATE 6/7/09: This was a very nice holster, but I find the seams starting to rip already on the end straps. If I could I would replace the five stars with just two for the lack of durability.
The case looks good, works well, and does not stick out too far. The magnetic latch is easy to open but secure. The leather is good quality. The clip works well. I thought it was a great value for the price.

When my son broke my case clip (by kicking it when I was carrying him), they were out of stock when I tried to order and buy a replacement. Grantwood replied to my query that they were expecting improved models in shortly and would send one at no charge. When the first shipment they received did not meet their quality standards, they offered me one of the interim units to hold me over until the corrected units were received.

I am a happy and satisfied customer.
I recently purchased this case and now, 3 months later, here are my thoughts. Note, I keep my iPhone in an Incase Protective Cover - so that when it's out of the leather holster, it's still protected. I got the inCase cover after obtaining the Grantwood case, specifically because it fits in the Grantwood case.

1. Well-crafted product. Despite frequent opening, closing, tugging and shoving, this case has withstood much and is still in great shape.

2. Tight-fitting: the Grantwood case is fitted for the iPhone so if you want to do what I did - putting your phone in a protective sleeve or case so that it's protected when in use - you have very few options. I actually wanted the Griffin Clarifi but the Clarifi, and other "slider" type cases, are too large to fit in the Grantwood case. Grantwood, if you're listening, can you make a case that's just a little bigger specifically for people who want their iPhones protected when it's in-use? I think that would sell. Well, I'd buy one, anyway.

3. Secure. I went shopping specifically for a horizontal, magnet-closure, low-profile-belt-clip case to carry my phone around, and this is the one I chose. It doesn't disappoint for security/safety of your phone when holstered. The clip is tight and secure, and I've even been running with my Grantwood case and had no problems with the case bouncing off or moving around. The magnet closure snaps shut with a satisfying click, and it hold tight until it's manually pulled open even with lots of movement.

4. Convenient. Place the phone in the case with the volume buttons up and the screen towards your body, and you have access to all of the buttons and jacks except the dock connector and the home button; and the built-in speakers are not covered so you can hear them. Very convenient.

All in all, well worth the price and I would recommend this to anyone looking to get an iPhone case who hates velcro closures as much as I do. (Which is a lot.) I have, in fact, recommended this product to several people already.
A tad bulky as I guess any holster for an iphone would be. The magnetic enclosure keeps it secure. Works perfect for what I had intended.

Reason for the 4 stars is because when putting the phone into the case with the vibrate switch going in first...the phone rubs against the case and will flip the switch to vibrate mode. I've never tested to see if it ever flips it out of vibrate mode.

Easy fix is to consciously keep that side of the iphone at the top of the case. Not a biggie.

While this book is not as comprehensive as some have wanted, I found it to be a nice beginners tutorial to writing iPhone applications. The book starts out with an objective-C primer. Since objective-C has such an "interesting" syntax this is badly needed, even though I come from a strong programming background.

Each section includes a reasonably complex sample that puts that section's material to use. Most of the sections also include a "Further Study" area that gives you some homework. This is where the user can expand his knowledge through research and working with the tools.

The book jumps around a bit by first going over simple UI patterns, then spending time talking about audio services and networking, only to come back and spend more time with UI controls, only to jump back into audio/video. Still, one has to remember that this is a reference book and not a novel so jumping around is ok.

The sample applications that I have tried so far are ok and I feel like I have a much better grasp on how the iPhone system works.

This book is not an XCode or Interface Builder tutorial.
I was fairly new to Mac OS and iPhone development. I had done a little bit of Mac OS development in the past year. This book was exactly what I was looking for in terms of getting more familiar with iPhone development.

The issue of digging under the hood, and not using Interface Builder for everything, was something I wanted. People should know what IB is doing for them. The concept of delegates should not be too confusing to anyone looking to do significant Mac/iPhone development.

Both the current books on iPhone development fail to provide an "introduction" to development as I'd call it. Both books (this one, and Beginning iPhone Development by Mark and LaMarche) say, right up front something akin to "the Apple approved and easy way to write for the iPhone is to use Interface Builder, but we're going to start you off with the harder, hand-coded way, so you'll learn the guts of how it works."

Really bad idea. Delegates, controllers et al are different enough without throwing unnecessary hand-coding at the novice first. Further, in both books, the code is usually "just presented" (here: type this) with only modest followup as to what you've just entered actually does and where it fits into a larger picture.

Now it's obvious that I'm new to Xcode and iPhone, but I'm not new to programming per se: I started coding in 1978. I'm also a teacher, and can say that both these books represent the "jump into the lake and while you're gasping for air, I'll teach you how to swim" approach.

The beginner would have been far better served with the inclusion of Interface Builder right up front. That would help understand the whole paradigm used by the frameworks and how it implements MVC.

Once that was understood, -then- is the time to go back and say "... and this is how we hand code that..." - once the basic understanding and overview was in place in the reader's mind.

I'm even monitoring the Stanford class... and what I can say is that between that, and two books, and constant re-reading, I've finally managed to extract the conceptual overview needed to understand WHY thing are done, which any programmer needs to understand to write good, efficient code.

Copy/paste doesn't teach programming. It's like teaching "turn screwdriver clockwise to set screw" first, and expecting that to lead to carpentry skills.

It's a common problem when experts teach, and is why teaching is a profession unto itself.

I've figured it out.. and am still learning... but I should not have to "reverse engineer" it all to learn to do it.

In sum then: at least if you're starting from where I started, get everything you can find on iPhone programming - one book alone won't cut it.
Where do these people learn to program? Just reading the examples in the book tells one how superficial and confused this author's brain is. And don't give me the "...my intention is not to provide the most efficient code..." excuse. This is nothing but bad code. The text itself is no better. Just read the What's Going On sections.

I've read the first 3 chapters and already looking for something else. Don't waste your time and money. I've been programming for 25 years and it is hard to find a worse book than this one. It is the typical "get it out the door" text.
I am new to Mac/iphone development and this book didn't cover a lot of basics. I used a few other books for basics on Objective-C/Coca programming. I tried to read the book by implementing examples but some of the examples didn't work. I contacted the author but didn't get any reply. Overall, I liked first six chapters and they had good examples but last six chapters were just list of APIs and their explanation. Apple has very good reference on iphone development but I was looking for a way to build complete applications using different APIs and in that regard the book failed. Finally, this book completely ignores Interface Builder that is key part of Mac development.

I am an iPhone developer. I purchased this book in order to learn more about the animation capabilities of the platform.

The book is written horribly. It is gray, boring and unreadable. It might have some details in it that are of value, however, getting to those details in the pile of useless text in it is simply a challenge.

The examples in the book look bad. Its almost as if you are looking at a book showing you how to move sprites on a commodore 64...

How to improve the next editions:
- Talk less, show more
- Work with an animator / designer for the examples in the book
- Create a learning process, where you start with something basic and work your way into a deeper challange.

I bought this book based on the rave recommendations I read here. And with the limited selection of books on the topic, this one seemed like the best one available at the time (June 2009).

I have to report that I was disappointed with this book. The author's style is a tad repetitive. Often the text would promise explanations of something "in detail", but the detail never came.

Generally the book scratches the surface of many elements of Core Animation, giving the reader a reasonable starting point for further research. But since the text of the book does not include complete code examples (just snippets) it is sometimes hard to see how the examples would fit into a larger application.

I am an accomplished software developer with over 20 years experience designing complex software applications. I have read (at this point) more than few serious books about Objective-C, Cocoa, and iPhone development. I learned little from this book, sadly. Except that I need to buy another book.

Bottom line: If you are already a Max OS X and Cocoa developer, then this book will be a good introduction to Core Animation. But you will need to read more than just this book to get up to speed. If you are an iPhone developer, the one chapter in this book about iPhone specifics as they relate to Core Animation is not worth it.

Core Animation for Mac OS X and the iPhone: Creating Compelling Dynamic User Interfaces (Pragmatic Programmers)

This books is all about Core Animation. As in most Apple technologies there is a lot of magic that takes place when you work with Cocoa or Foundation frameworks. Some of the concepts are better understood when explained from a seasoned Cocoa developer rather than just reading the online docs.

Bill stays focused on the subject and does a great job of explaining the mechanics of Core Animation. This knowledge will save you precious time if you elect to use this technology. You will get a clear explanation with hands on examples of the basic Core Animation APIs and concepts as well as integration of all these with the existing Cocoa/AppKit applications.

Some knowledge of Objective-C as well as straight C programming is required.
The author clearly understands Core Animation (CA) technology, and his selection of topics provides an interesting overview of CA. However, the book is poorly focused, and it makes the concepts difficult to absorb. The book jumps around concepts and breaks basic rules of technical writing and editing. For example, he will refer to a technology like Quartz Composer, but the definition appears later in the book. The book provides an interesting array of examples, but cherry picks from the extensive APIs. The book would have been better served by providing overviews of the APIs, and tying the examples into the API. This lack of reference and context is disorienting. You get isolated examples, but you feel you lack the bigger picture. Overall the book is moderately satisfying, and an interesting introduction to the technology. But is insufficient to understanding the breadth of Core Animation. It is barely a 101 primer.
Bill does a great job explaining Core Animation in this book. I initially picked up this book to get a better understanding of animation for iPhone development and have not been disappointed. While there is only one chapter specifically about iPhone animation, the balance of the book provides a strong foundation for understanding and applying the Core Animation concepts to iPhone development.

Five Stars. Highly recommended.

(Great clip for iPhone 3g)

It does pretty much what it says. Works fine for face-out.

You CAN use this as a face-in clip, BUT:

* You kinda have to force it in face-in mode
* There's a gap between the backing and the screen in face-in mode, so you may still get crap in there if you have messy pockets.
This fits my phone perfectly. Very snug and looks exactly as pictured. I like the fact that you can put the screen facing in or out. The whole case is "rubberized" and feels good. Great value for the price.

(Not quite what I expected)

Clever design and, does exactly what it claims: folds and snaps together to hold your device in either landscape or portrait mode, with or without a case. It's also 'rubberized' which should minimize slipping around on smooth surfaces.

The iZel is much more sturdy (and possibly more durable) than the Tiko Fold Travel Stand that I also purchased.

The only real downside is that it does seem somewhat overpriced.

Can't wait to try it out on my next flight.
I bought this for my Teen brother for his ipod touch 2nd Generation. He loves it because its light and compact, great for travelling. I highly reccomend it.
This is great - a portable stand that will hold my Kindle at multiple viewing angles. I bought this stand for my IPhone, and was happy to see it has 2 width adjustments, and holds the Kindle when I am eating, or just want to be handsfree. It is lightweight and soft edged so I can toss it in the bag with my Kindle and not worry that it will scratch the screen or case.
Great little stand.
What an awesome accessory! It fits easily into the pocket of my Bose headphone case so it's handy when I travel. I had downloaded a couple of videos to my IPod Touch and used the iZel to watch them on a recent airline flight. I like its adjustability to fit an iPod or smaller Blackberry with or without the protective cover. They make great gifts for my tech conscious family and I got a couple for a charity auction.
Does it do everything it claims to do. Yes. Does it do it well? Yes. Is it some type of neat metallic Transformer Movie like device? No. It's made out of rubber and basically bends into the shape necessary to hold your digital device. So, it's disappointing and I think very overpriced in terms of Form but perfectly okay in terms of Function. If it were made in China it would cost less than 10 cents to produce. It is made in America, so if it costs 10 times as much to produce and you add in the packaging, it's still overpriced.

(Too bulky to carry)

(safest armor for your iphone)

The case will save your I-phone from destruction but at a cost of being so bulky to carry that it is cumbersome. It does come with a belt clip but again, it is so protective and bulky, you definitely know its on your hip. The case is constructed for durability.

I sent mine back for a refund.
