But in day-to-day use, I won't spend a lot of time listening to the product. It'll basically wake me in the morning and sing me to sleep at night. And at 1/3 of the price of the Boston, the iHome sounds perfectly fine. Crisp highs and a nice little kick from the bass. Plus, it's physically more low-profile on the nightstand.
Finally -- and this was key -- the iHome will wake me to a playlist that I create especially for the task, whereas the Boston could only "press play," essentially just starting up wherever I left off when I last listened.
The unit comes with three adapters for various iPod/iPhone models (including my iPhone 3GS), even though the iHome website says you have to buy them separately. That was a nice surprise.
In short, it was everything I was looking for, and everything I could expect for the money.』

(Did not work with my iPhone) 『I was looking forward to having a clock radio that could dock and charge my iPhone. Unfortunately, the IP9 did not work with my iPhone. When I docked the iPhone, I got a message stating that this product is not designed to work with an iPhone and suggesting I turn on airplane mode (which contradicts the product's description). Also, I was not able to play music from my iPhone through the IP9 speakers. I sent it back.』
(Could be the best iPod alarm clock, but...) 『I have searched hard to find the "perfect" iPod alarm clock. For me, the iHome iP9 comes closer than anything else I found, but it does have some very annoying flaws.
In my opinion, the best features are:
* The alarm can be set to wake to a random song on an "iHome" playlist on your iPod. Only Sanyo seems to have a product with a similar feature, but I think theirs looks REALLY ugly.
* The backlight dimmer has 7 levels of brightness and can even be turned off.
* You can adjust the snooze time from 1 to 29 minutes in 1-minute increments.
* The alarm volume (for radio and iPod) gradually increases for "gentle" waking.
* The sound quality is quite good for such a small unit.
The things that annoy me about the unit are:
* The alarm set buttons are located directly behind the snooze bar, and hitting one of these buttons resets the alarm when the alarm is sounding. While the snooze bar is very big and has a bump that you can feel with your fingers, I fear that I will accidentally turn off my alarm one morning when just trying to snooze for a few more minutes.
* There is a beep when setting the alarm. While this offers audio confirmation of your alarm setting actions, it can be annoying if you are trying to set the alarm when your significant other is sleeping.
* The dial controls are cool in theory/aesthetic but are not so great in practice. It can be more time-consuming to use these to set the alarm time and other settings when compared to conventional buttons and a system where one sets the hour and minute independently. Also, the dials are mechanical (unlike an iPod) and lack an indent or other means for providing traction. So, your finger can slip, making them not so easy to turn. For this, I found a simple work-around: I stuck on each dial a small, round, self-adhesive, clear plastic bumper (something you can find in any hardware store). This makes it much easier to turn the dials, but it does not get around the fact that dials are not always the best interface.
* Personally, I find only the dimmest and off settings for the backlight to be of any use. Perhaps, the other backlight settings would be needed if the unit is placed in direct sunlight. However, I find them too bright, and it is very slightly annoying that I need to press the dimmer button to cycle through the 6 other "on" settings each time I turn the backlight off. While definitely better than some competing units whose backlight is always way too bright (e.g. the Sony ICF-CD3iP), even the dimmest setting can be rather bright in a totally dark room.
For me, the positive outweighs the negative when evaluating this unit as an iPod alarm clock. While not my primary usage (and paling in comparison to a dedicated home stereo), I found the sound on this unit to be surprisingly good when using the unit as an iPod speaker system for casual listening in a small room.』

Here's why I say that --
You really can get through the book in a day or two. The explanations are clear, the topics focus on what's relevant to getting started in Android development, and when you're done you have the skills to dive into the SDK to continue learning.
There is a consistent example project that is developed throughout the book. I found this very helpful, because it showed me how all the different parts fit together. For example, launching activities from an existing activity, using multiple classes in your project, adding preferences, etc.
There are very few (if any) "gotchas" in this book. I followed the examples step by step without any problem. I think some people have used the book's online forum to ask about which packages to import, but when I used Eclipse it was done automatically for me. (By the way, all the files are also online.)
Even after having many months of Android development under my belt, I find that I still refer back to this book from time to time. That's saying something for a book that sets out to be an introduction.
Remember, this book is a great introduction. If you already know Android and are looking for a deep-dive, look elsewhere. But if you are curious about all the excitement around Android and have a few hours to spare, spend them with this book and find out what developing in Android is all about.』

I am an experienced Java developer, and this book helped me learn Android quickly. It does not waste time explaining how to use Java, so if you are an absolute newbie, this might not be for you.
Android is rapidly evolving, and Ed is doing a great job keeping up with changes to Android. You can also get the PDF version, and Pragmatic Bookshelf lets you download beta chapters as they are updated.』
(Didn't work for me) 『Update: Changed my rating from 3 to 2 stars. I was going through the location chapter and stopped at this paragraph - "The code for the remaining methods of LocationTest--log( ), dumpProviders(), and dumpLocation( )--is not very interesting, so I won't bore you with it here. You can find it all in the downloadable samples on the book's website." This book is way to dependent on you going to the website. It presumes an internet connection, which might not be available wherever I might want to read this book (e.g. coffee shops) or might just be down. So I could just be stuck with incomplete code. I had a read through Pro Android and found that book to be excellent, only missing a section on SensorManager unfortunately. I would go with that one over Hello Android. I still rate this book with 3 stars despite how irritating I'm finding it. I figure it is irritating because of my learning style. It covers a wide range of topics, so it might still be worth having around.
It started out fine, and was able to breeze through, even though I had some problems with the initial Sudoku problem. Why I find this book so irritating is the order of the code. The author creates classes and methods that will eventually reference other classes and methods while never saying how the components all fit together. In the case of the Sudoku game, the game logic actually comes at the end of the one of the chapters, whereas for me it would make more sense to place this at the beginning of the chapter to get an understanding of how the game works and then build the xml interfaces on top of this as needed, allowing me to understand how all the components work together. It is obvious the author is just giving the code as he created it rather than going through how to create an Android app. This could just be the way I like to learn programming though. In between the code examples there is little in way of explanation either. I skipped ahead to another chapter to get away from the Sudoku example, and found it similar with poor-ordering and limited explanations.
Do visit the website as there is more help and corrections available.

(just not working for me, returning it) 『this book seemed to be leaving stuff out, even early on with the "hello, world" example. screen shots didn't match up. and the publisher's website offers a free upgrade if you purchased the electronic version. i guess i am screwed since i bought a printed one.
i did like how in the first part of the sudoku example the book had you program a little, then publish out and see the result. then a little more, and then see the result. but when you get to chapter 4, that practice is dropped. at that point on, there are just pages of code to muscle through. there is some explanation as you go along, but i really need to see the result of what i am doing in order to understand it. how about a little pay off every few pages?
i found myself eventually just copying the code from the publisher's site and going to the sdk for explanation. then i started to wonder why i paid for this book, if i was just going to be referencing the sdk online for free.
i had already ordered Professional Android Application Development (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) but picked this one up at a local store because i was too excited to wait. i guess i should have. "Professional Android Application Development" seems like it might be more helpful. we will see.』
(Good title for beginners, doesn't offer a lot of insight for experienced users.) 『The title basically says it all. I picked up this book for work to catch up on Android since we had a few projects dealing with it. Overall it's a great way to start teaching yourself, but it tries to force the xml way of handling all of your ui elements and resources, which was not a feasible option for our projects. This limited the book's usefulness for me, but I continued on and found it entirely readable, easy to follow, and I suspect for someone working on a purely android project a lot of useful information would be found in the book, but I think most professional programmers won't like this approach.
I rated this four stars for: * easiness to read (doesn't bore you to sleep!) * straight forward examples * useful jumping off point. Downsides were: * it's scope (limited to a particular way of doing things, mostly) * it's breadth (doesn't cover all the topics you want, just the big points).
I would cautiously recommend this book. Probably more of a 3.5 star book, but I gave it the benefit of the doubt. If you don't know anything about mobile development and are having a hard time working through the android example on google's dev site (or have completed it and want to know what's next), this might be a good book for you. If you're a seasoned professional, probably best to look/wait for another book or just start trying things out (and check out the SDK).』 『

(THE BEST CASE FOR IPHONE!!!) 『I'm not one for writing reviews, but I have tried a great number of cases since I got my iphone a few months ago, and this is by far the best of them. What I really wanted to do is respond to the "bubble" problem. Yes, it happened to me too. However, once I figured out the solution, this case has been perfect for my needs. Ivyskin provides the solution to this problem for you although they may not know it. Each case comes with a microfiber cleaning cloth. If you study the "bubble" effect you will notice that it is caused by a pocket of air where the screen protector and the iphone are not in contact. You may also notice that there is a very slight bit of "play" between the back piece of the case and the iPhone. Pushing gently on either side of the back piece of the case will demonstrate this minor flaw. To overcome this, simply fold the microfiber cleaning cloth in half and set it on top of the iPhone before securing the back cover. The extra bulk keeps the iPhone against the screen and eliminates the extra "play" with the back piece. And viola! No more screen bubble! I have had the bubble return, but it is extremely rare and all I have to do is gently push on the back of the case and it goes away almost instantly without having to take the phone out. I love this case! I docked it a star for two minor issues:
First, when you receive the case, it has dust shield attatched to it, which needs to be removed. However, mine had some of the residue on the sides of the screen, right in the grooves where the screen protector is secured to the plastic face. I had to scrape it out, and I blemished the plastic while doing so.
The second minor issue I have is that the screen is so perfecly clear, that in a really bright room, the light reflection can be too overwhelming to enjoy a video from certain angles.
But, as I said, I have been through multiple cases and this is definitely the best of the bunch, even for its minor flaws. Iskin Fuze is too bulky, the screen protector is impossible to apply without getting permanent bubbles, and the case covers too much of the screen. You have to tilt it to press any of the bottom icons. The Invisible Shield offers no protection for the body of the phone. So, while you won't scratch it if you drop it, you can still dent the body. I learned that the hard way. Finally, Speck's touch through design is incredibly dust and scratch prone and the plastic screen cover never sits right against the phone's screen. So, you end up tapping the screen against the screen everytime, which is really annoying. However, this case is not bulky, slides right out of your pocket, sits perfectly flush with the screen on the phone, and will actually protect your phone if you drop it.』
(Faceplate sticks to iPhone screen) 『The clear hard case was a great idea, but needs some tweaking. I bought two (for me and my wife) and it does protect the iPhone very well with all the ports still accessible for use. However, the big thing is that the plastic shell sticks to the front screen of the iPhone and creates a "water bubble" effect that increases the more you use it. My wife uses it a lot less, so her bubble is smaller (but growing). I tried a Gelaskin clear cover on top of the screen so it's against the Ivyskin Xylos hard shell, but it has the same problem.
There is no issue with being able to use the iPhone while the hard shell is on it, but the bubble issue on the image is a big problem. Particularly visible on pure white or pure black backgrounds. I would NOT recommend this cover until they sort out that issue. The fact that it happened on both our iPhones makes me wonder if it isn't a design flaw?』
