customer 's review (UHHH! HORRIBLE)
(Awful&Pathetic)
(A fine zombie horror comedy!)
(Gory gore galore.)
(Ok zombie film) I love zombie movies..so I bought this one to try it out. Don't waste your money!!! I love a b-rated zombie movie more than the average person so it says something when I say this movie sucks!!! The worst zombie flick I have ever seen...bad filming; cheap effects. A lot of bad zombie movies make up for their low budget with damn good zombies and lots of gore and humor... or a spooky atmosphere/music at the very least... In this movie the only difference between the zombies and the regular folk is that their faces have blue and red paint smeared on them. The bonus material is more interesting than the actual feature movie...and even that was lame. I think it's got high ratings only because the zombie story was different here from a lot of typical zombie scenarios. A virus has accidently been unleashed and changes humans into vicious flesh-eating zombies that begin to attack the nation. The goverment sends out a special zombie killing task squad to elimiate the dead and it's pro-zombie protesters in Ohio where they must try to find out the source of the virus that started it all.
A fun mix of off the wall humor and gory zombie horror with some action! it happens to be the most expensive independent movie shot on Super-8 film ever with 4 years in the making. Produced by Sam Raimi whom is credited as "The Master Cylinder" in the credits, Bruce Campbell does a dub voice over on a couple of actors and stars "Evil Dead 2" co-scripter Scott Spiegel. It has be a cult film that has gained a small following since it was first released on video, fans of the genre will recongize some of the jokes and references to other horror flicks especially Romero's movies, it's a blast.
This special Edition DVD from Anchor Bay contains good picture and sound quality with some cool extras like an audio commentary, trailer, a featurette, behind the scenes still gallery, auditions, deleted scenes, music video, production still gallery, video storyboards and FrightVision 2000 Reunion.
Also recommended: "Re-Animator", "Night of the Living Dead (1968 and 1990)", "Dawn of the Dead (1978)", "Day of the Dead (1985)", "Land of the Dead", "Diary of the Dead", "Planet Terror", "The Stuff", "Shaun of the Dead", "Versus", "Demons", "Night of the Creeps", "Dawn of the Dead (2004)", "The Return of the Living Dead Trilogy", "Let Sleeping Corpses Lie (a.k.a. City of the Walking Dead)", "Grindhouse", "Fido", "Evil Dead 1&2", "Phantasm", "Resident Evil Trilogy", "Zombi Holocaust", "Bio-Zombie", "Dead and Buried", "Bad Taste", "City of the Living Dead", "House By The Cemetery" and "The Beyond". Filmed on a 8mm camera and no budget, dispite it's flaw's, J.R. Bookwalter's Dead Next Door is a highy underrated little zombie gorefest with a somewhat original story. It start's out as your normal zombie pic with horde's of the undead taking over the country (a la Dawn of the Dead), but then put's a spin on the genre by introducing a zombie cult. There is a cult that believes the zombie outbreak is Gods' work and the zombie's were sent by him to purify the nation. They harness the zombie's, feed them, keep them as pet's, and encourage their brain-eating behavior. I think it's a really cool and original premise for a zombie film. It also pay's great homages to the one's before it like Evil Dead and Romero film's, one character is even named Romero King and another character is named Raimi. Of course there is bucket's of gore, tounge's being ripped out, dismemberment, gut munching, decapitation, neck ripping disembowelment, intestine chomping, you know the usual. Dead Next Door is one of my favorite zombie flick's, sure it's not up to Romero or Raimi caliber, but it does put a fun and original spin on the zombie genre itself. Highly recommended.
This is a surprisingly good zombie movie. Zombies have overrun the US and now a Zombie Squad is going back to where everything started to get the original serum that can destroy zombies. This movie had good gore, okish acting for a B movie, and an actual plot line (although it was confusing at times). Bottom line is, even though this is no Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition), Dawn of the Dead (Unrated Director's Cut) [HD DVD] remake or any other Romero or remake film, it is better than some zombie movies out there. At least it is much better than Zombie Nation. Rerations < The Dead Next Door [VHS] >

customer 's review (Lord of the Rings-Fellowship)
(It's Tolkien, but ... This movie is good in the way Peter I guess didn't have all the time for the movie.)
(Great condition&timely arrival.)
(Magnificent!)
(A PRECIOUS EDITION) This is a movie I truly enjoy, because I never get tired of watching it! What I like most about it is the concept of a small band of men willing to challenge the evil that presents them! And the characters seem like they could be your noblemen, along side of you in the mist of battle! Truly Epic!!! I love this movie, I love the book and the series even more. Peter Jackson did an excelent job of creating this series and this opening movie. I did miss a lot of the details in which the director, Peter Jackson, I guess just couldn't find time to put into the movie. I see that the main idea of the plot is followed correctly and some stunning visual effects are used, including pieces in the movie that you don't find out in the book without extensive reading and study... That said I miss the first time the character Sam meets elves (on their way from Hobbiton to Buckland) and I also would have loved to see the feature in the book of Tom Bombadil and the Old Forest with moving trees and the great giant old tree which tries to crush Merry and Pippin in that area. The Barrow Downs and the Barrow Wights animation was sorely missed also... but the general overall theme of the movie hed together very well, and it lead perfectly into the rest of the trilogy in which if Peter would have included all the details of the book, would have put all of the audience asleep.
Still the book is better, but takes patience, and the movie is fun in seeing the visuals of the characters. Product did not arrive as originally advertized, but upon notification, seller sent the rest of the product. Everything came quickly and in a very good condition. Would purchase from seller again. I saw the film several years ago when it came out in theaters, and was blown away by what Mr. Jackson had wrought. Now that I have viewed the extended edition of the film, I am even more impressed and pleased. Mr. Jackson obviously loves Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, and he has provided a beautiful cinematic experience for the enjoyment of Rings fans. I recently finished re-reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and broke this out to extend the experience. This also gave me a chance to compare the film to the books. Although some things puzzled me (like Aragorn's brief disappearance, or the decision to make the elves join the fight at Helms Deep), and some things I missed (like the barrow-wrights), I don't have the slightest quibble with Mr. Jackson's work. I expect I will view this film again and again. After countless years of animated adaptions and audio books, one of the greatet works of literature came barreling into movie theatres around the world with blades in both hands. The Lord of the Rings was a motion picture trilogy based on the classic Novels of the same name written by J.R.Tolkien.The movie stays true to it's literary counterpart, with very few liberties being taken by the director in terms of character development and plot. The action is extremely plentiful and very well choreographed. The audio is top-notch and the cinematography and numerous CGI effects are nothing short of breathtaking. The movie was cast quite well, with almost no moments of overacting or upstaging by any of the cast members. This Extended Version of the film provides nearly 45 minutes of extra footage not seen in the theatrical release. However, what makes this extended version different from other extended fims is that there are no new scenes that hinder the flow of the movie.Every new scene only enhances the overall storyline.Though this film is still astounding in any version,to see this Extended Edition is like watching another movie entirely. As the triumphant start of a trilogy,The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ringleaves you begging for more. By necessity, Peter Jackson's ambitious epic compresses J.R.R. Tolkien's classicThe Lord of the Rings, but this robust adaptation maintains reverent allegiance to Tolkien's creation, instantly qualifying as one of the greatest fantasy films ever made. At 178 minutes, it's long enough to establish the myriad inhabitants of Middle-earth, the legendary Rings of Power, and the fellowship of hobbits, elves, dwarves, and humans--led by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the brave hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood)--who must battle terrifying forces of evil on their perilous journey to destroy the One Ring in the land of Mordor. Superbly paced, the film is both epic and intimate, offering astonishing special effects and production design while emphasizing the emotional intensity of Frodo's adventure. Ending on a perfect note of heroic loyalty and rich anticipation, this wondrous fantasy continues inThe Two Towers(2002).--Jeff Shannon Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is an epic adventure of good against evil, the power of friendship and individual courage. The saga centers around an unassuming Hobbit named Frodo Baggins who inherits a Ring that would give a dark and powerful lord the power to enslave the world. With a loyal fellowship of elves, dwarves, men and a wizard, Frodo embarks on a heroic quest to destroy the One Ring and pave the way for the emergence of mankind. customer 's review (Just Bad!!)
(This did not accomplish what Zombie wanted.)
(Really not bad for a Rock Star gone Hollywood director)
(House of a 1000 Corpses VHS)
(Why do I like it? Because it's dark and hellish . . .) Let me start out by saying that when this movie first was to be released I couldn't wait, I like Rob Zombie and own several of his CD's and was hoping that this movie would be really hard core. I watched this movie the first time it came out and it put me to sleep it was so bad. I later rented and ended up buying DEVIL'S REJECTS which I must say is SOOOOO much better than HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES. After buying Devil's Rejects many years after watching the first movie I figured maybe I didn't give HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES a real chance, so I decided since I really loved the Devil's Rejects that I would probably realize that I liked HOUSE OF 1000 Corpses... WRONG!! After buying this movie I watched it again and I must say that it still SUCKED BALLS. I really hated it, it wasn't scary it didn't make much sense and the characters weren't menacing like they are in the DEVIL'S REJECTS. I just don't understand how two movies made by the same guy and with the same characters can be so different in that one was awesome and the other was terrible and a waste of my money. If you are a hardcore Zombie fan then you would probably want to own both of these movies but I must say that the latter is much better than the first. If you just like HORROR movies then you should NOT buy HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES; instead look for THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. Zombie wanted the audience to sympathize with the killers. These killers are the most unsympathetic group I have ever come across in a movie. Not only was there a total absence of a plot, but it was just gory (which is why I rated it two stars instead of one) and unrealistic. There needs to be a story told about the characters. There needs to be a purpose. Not just some annoying hicks who enjoy torturing innocent people. That doesn't make the audience like the characters. Sorry Zombie, you failed. The best part of both movies was the end of the Devil's Rejects, only then does the audience sort of like the killers but then they get killed. This is a really twisted movie. It has everything that a classic horror movie should have, blood, guts and true psychos played by a very convincing cast. This exploitation horror film was lead by Bill Moseley as Otis B. Driftwood, a truly scary SOB. He played primarily in B-Films until he hit Cult Classic Gold with Rob Zombie. Otis leads a family of crazies including a sister Baby Firefly played by Rob Zombie's wife Sheri Moon, 2 brothers, a Mother Firefly&Grandpa Hugo.
The true psychos in this movie, as well as the equally gory and much better production quality sequel The Devil's Rejects (Unrated Widescreen Edition), are Otis&Baby. I honestly believed that these two people where as crazy as their characters. This movie is a cult classic horror film and it's interesting to note that the character names came from Groucho Marx films.
Exactly as descibed.Great Service and care in the shipping. Plesant experience. Thanks I half excected to dislike this film, because I was a bit skeptical about Rob Zombie as a director. But after watching it, I actually liked it. The film is an extreme horrorfest, filled with excessive gore and disturbing settings. And when I mean excessive, I mean it conveys a no-holds-barred attitude. It's gory entertainment for those who can actually take it. Plus, it's severely dark and hellish, so it's not for those who are very squeamish. Personally, I thought that this film was good. Not excellent, but good enough to keep me interested. Although it may not achieve classic status like The Exorcist or Nightmare on Elm Street, I still like it for its overall gore and psychotic atmosphere.
In short, Rob Zombie has given us an entertaining horror film that would most certainly please a large percentage of horror fans; it did for me. I have never seen both versions of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but I do believe this might be even better than Chainsaw (but my opinion will probably change if I ever see any of them). Next up: The Devil's Rejects! A Rob Zombie Film. It's sick! It's twisted! It'sHouse of 1,000 Corpses, and it's more fun than a wholesome bowl of "Agatha Crispies"! Dropped by two studios (Universal and MGM) and doomed to obscurity until Lions Gate Films gave it a limited theatrical release, Rob Zombie's gonzo horror flick is a blood-spattered throwback to the gore-fests of the '70s, lending new meaning to the term "box-officegross." Most critics misunderstood this unbridled exercise in graphic style and violence, but for devoted horror buffs it's a refreshing rebuttal to the comparatively "polite" frights of the post-Screamera. While paying homage toThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre,Last House on the Left,Motel Hell, and other gory classics, Zombie's ramshackle plot (two young couples are terrorized by an inbred family of homicidal maniacs) lacks a crucial sense of dread, but his pastiche of vivid colors, grainy fetish-films, and photo-negative imagery is guaranteed to hold your attention. A bona-fide cult item, thisHouseis definitely worth a visit... if you dare.--Jeff Shannon Rerations < House of 1000 Corpses [VHS] >

customer 's review (A very overrated movie.)
(Who knew there were palm trees and mountains in Illinois?)
(Be careful if buying Blue-ray)
(Great picture, an exrodinary difference from the regular version)
(A start to a great series) I don't understand what people saw in this movie. I bought the movie because it was cheap and I was looking for a good horror movie to add to my collection because I am a big fan of the genre. However, the movie itself was a huge disappointment. It was very slow moving, not scary and overall, the plot was weak. It basically is about a mass murdering other worldly person named Micheal Myers who goes around and slaughters people for no reason but to kill. Not only are there not many kills but hardly anything happens in this movie and it was just very boring. There was almost no action except for the final encounter at the end. Critics said this was one of the best and most scariest horror movies made. They were dead wrong. To name anything positive about the film, I liked Micheal Myers theme song but that's it. Hello, production values? In *several* scenes supposedly located in and around the town of "Haddonfield" Illinois, there are palm trees visible in the background. When the doctor makes a phone call supposedly from rural Illinois, there are foothills and low mountains in the background. Sorry, I've been to Illinois; no mountains, no palm trees. All of which indicates the setting for this "horror classic" is not Illinois but good ol' SoCal. This might not be such a big deal except that the movie and those who tout it make so much out of the movie's "realism", and the "Midwest setting". The story itself is very pedestrian. Admittedly, the acting and the direction are good. Some of the plot is downright inexplicable; for example, when Michael Myers suddenly gets a sense of humor in the middle of his killing spree, and disguises himself to the bimbo girlfriend by covering himself with a sheet and wearing the glasses of her just-murdered boyfriend. That zany Myers, what a goof! Yeah, and speaking of the just-mentioned murder, yeah that makes sense that Myers could lift up the guy by the chin with one arm, and nonchalantly swing his other arm hard enough to impale the guy against a door with a knife. It's called physics, guys, look into it. So much for realism. The Blue-Ray version is NOT the extended cut. Amazon is posting reviews for every version that they have ever carried for this version, and refuses delete reviews for the different versions. Amazon will also refuse to refund your money if you buy this, thinking it's more than it is. Be careful and read the item description rather than the customer reviews before buying this disk. The total run time for the original Blue-ray release is far too short for it to contain the extra footage.
I must say that this blu ray version of the classic halloween is extrodinary. The picture is so clear and perfect, it doesn't even seem to be from the early eighties. I would not say anything bad about this verions. If you are a halloween fan and want the best picture you need this. Some blu ray's look good, but this looks great, and is also a great price A good, suspenceful movie that spawned one of the most popular and long lived slasher series ever.
When he was only six years old, Micheal Myers killed his sister with a large butcher knife. He spent the next fifteen years in a mental institution, where his therapist spent eight years trying to cure him before realiseing that he was "pure evil" and spent the next seven years making sure that he stayed locked away for life. But on October 31st 1978, Micheal Myers escaped, hellbent on a murder spree, climaxing in the one-by-one murders of Lorrie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends.
Althought it is not very violent (and not bloody at all) and the death scenes are quite tame by todays standards, Halloween is still a scary movie (made even creepier by the chilling musical score) and one of the first in the slasher genre. Deffinatly worth a watch, the start of a great series. Halloweenis as pure and undiluted as its title. In the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois, a teenage baby sitter tries to survive a Halloween night of relentless terror, during which a knife-wielding maniac goes after the town's hormonally charged youths. Director John Carpenter takes this simple situation and orchestrates a superbly mounted symphony of horrors. It's a movie much scarier for its dark spaces and ominous camera movements than for its explicit bloodletting (which is actually minimal). Composed by Carpenter himself, the movie's freaky music sets the tone; and his script (cowritten with Debra Hill) is laced with references to other horror pictures, especiallyPsycho. The baby sitter is played by Jamie Lee Curtis, the real-life daughter ofPsychovictim Janet Leigh; and the obsessed policeman played by Donald Pleasence is named Sam Loomis, after John Gavin's character inPsycho. In the end, though,Halloweenstands on its own as an uncannily frightening experience--it's one of those movies that had audiences literally jumping out of their seats and shouting at the screen. ("No! Don't drop that knife!") Produced on a low budget, the picture turned a monster profit, and spawned many sequels, none of which approached the 1978 original. Curtis returned for two more installments: 1981's dismalHalloween II, which picked up the story the day after the unfortunate events, and 1998's occasionally grippingHalloween H20, which proved the former baby sitter was still haunted after 20 years.--Robert Horton Halloweenis as pure and undiluted as its title. (This is NOT the true story)
(Not for the weak hearted)
(Great flick)
(Disturbing and Dark...) that was so screwed that this is a real story, your right some stories are just not meant to be retold. The Girl Next Door is a zero-star movie. Bad acting, bad screenplay, bad direction, bad casting, bad production, bad cinematography, bad audio, all based on a very bad book. To say this film is based on the Sylvia Likens case is true, but misleading. Only the premise is based on the actual Likens story. This film consists strictly of graphically depicted sex crimes, making it nothing more than a low-budget piece of child porn. Even though Ketchum and company have never claimed this film is anything other than fiction, somehow people got the idea that this is the true story. It is not.
The facts of this compelling crime are public and plentiful, from eyewitnesses, court transcripts, jury members, law enforcement, etc. The details are not hard to dig up. Certain types of sexal abuse did happen, but not specifically some of the most horrific depicted in this film. Central to the actual case were numerous forms of non-sexual torture. Focusing solely on the sex angle makes this just a lascivious and superficial horror flick.
If you are interested in the true story of Sylvia Likens, see "An American Crime." It's a richer, dimensional portrayal that investigates the actual crime, without the gratuitous, gruesome sex scenes. It's an infinitely better movie in every way.
Two big thumbs down.
I ordered this movie after i had watched An American Crime. The book is based more on the American Crime movie. I went into this thinking it would be something like that movie, and boy was i wrong. I thought the content in American Crime was bad, but it wasn't compared to this movie. I was getting sooo mad and upset with this movie. I could not believe the cruelty and sickness that was going on. I'm not going to give any of it away. All i can say is when you watch this movie.....Beware. Disturbing but amazing. Not cheap thrills. Not exploitation. Terrifying and gross, but not exploitation. Wow...This was an absolutely disturbing movie. This is one of those movies that you watch that changes you're perception of humanity permanently, and for the worse. There was no story....no lesson...no noble point to be made, just a raw, disturbing, and dark piece that is just one notch shy of being a snuff film. I would suggest skipping this movie, unless you are a sociopath or serial killer in training. If I could have given it zero stars, I would have done so. Based on a true story&book by jack kethum. A teenage girl meg&her crippled sister susam whose parents are dead now are left captive to the savage whims&rages of a distant aunt who is rapidly descending into insanity. Only one troubled boy stands between meg&susan&their cruel torturous deaths. Studio: Starz/sphe Release Date: 09/30/2008 Run time: 93 minutes Rating: Nr Based on the novel by acclaimed author Jack Ketchum,The Girl Next Doordraws its nerve-wracking power from a real-life horror show--the torture of Sylvia Likens and her sister by Gertrude Baniszewski and her offspring in the mid-1960s (the case also serves as the basis for the filmAn American Crime). Here, the Likens character is a recently orphaned teen (Blythe Auffarth) taken in by Ruth Chandler (Blanche Baker), a single mother who plies her adolescent sons and their friends with alcohol and lax supervision. Ruth takes an almost instant disliking to the bright young girl and her sister (who is afflicted with polio) and mounts a campaign of mental and physical abuse upon them; her sons quickly fall into step behind their mother, and a neighborhood friend (Daniel Manche) struggles with his own participation in the atrocities. As true crime thrillers go,The Girl Next Doorsucceeds on many fronts: Baker and Auffarth give impressive performances, and the violence, though harrowing, is never offered as exploitation. Director Gregory Wilson also keeps the pace brisk and breathtaking as the torture escalates; however, he is less capable in the expositional scenes, and the script by Daniel Farrands and Philip Nutman has a leaden ring at times (which undoes the efforts of the younger cast). Still, it's challenging fare for strong-hearted horror and suspense fans. The DVD includes two sets of commentary: one by Wilson, producer Andrew van den Houten, and cinematographer/co-producer William M. Miller, and another by Ketchum and the screenwriters, who pull no punches in expressing their displeasure over changes made to the film's conclusion (and their assessments are entirely correct). Interviews with the cast and crew and the original screenplay (in DVD-ROM format) round out the supplemental features.--Paul Gaita Rerations < The Girl Next Door >

customer 's review (Only 1 version is on the DVD)
(Amazing)
(Better than the original)
(One of the best action movies ever!!)
(The best in the Terminator series gets a great exdended treatment) I agree! There is only one version on this DVD. There is 2 discs in the box and a nice metal sleeve. The picture is very good and close to a blu ray. But you do not have 3 versions (On mine anyway) Subtitle is in Spanish only. No French etc... I love that DVD but it's not the ultimate edition. I do not know where to find the ultimate edition and I do not know if it has a metal sleeve. If somebody knows, please let me know how can I recignize the ultimate and where to find it Guy
The original Terminator was something very special and was the film that kick started the career of one of the biggest action movie stars in history. Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original Terminator was the definitive bad guy; violent, emotionless and unstoppable. That same character returned for the sequel, but this time he joined the defending team and was sent back by future John Connor to protect the past John Connor. Arnold is still a T-101 but was reprogrammed by future Connor to fight on the human's side, and rather than having a human enemy, the story is very much Terminator vs. More advanced Terminator.
Judgement Day focuses around a 10 year old John Connor whose mother, Sarah has been put in a mental institute for telling the stories of the original Terminator assassination attempt and John is a rebel living in a foster home. Another Terminator has been sent back to kill the future leader of the human resistance, now a much more powerful enemy, the T-1000 (Robert Patrick) which is a machine that is made almost entirely of liquid metal. It can morph itself to look exactly like anything it touches and mould parts of its body to sharp objects to assassinate those who get in its way. As the protector, a reprogrammed T-101 (Arnold) is sent back to protect the young rebel.
Taking the guise of a police officer, the T-1000 goes on a rapid search for John and comes very close to catching him, but at the right moment is found by the T-101 and has the best man (or machine) for the job as his protector. Once John becomes aware of his possible future, he and the T-101 embark on a journey to not only break Sarah Connor out of the mental institute, but to destroy Skynet and prevent Judgement Day and the rise of the machines. Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) is now a tough woman who appears tougher than the T-101 and becomes the leader of the attack on Skynet.
The original Terminator movie at the time was considered really hard to top as at the time of the sequels release, the original had gained a massive cult status. Nobody really considered just how good this film would be and it came along at a time when Arnold was developing his career as a diverse actor, whilst still remaining loyal to the action movie genre. Also, hot off the cusp of the massive film, The Predator, there was no doubting there would be more interest in this solely because of Schwarzenegger's involvement. Of course, a massive budget of $102 million and the involvement of Arnold Schwarzenegger doesn't necessarily make a good film. What made this great was its pace, atmosphere, acting, action, script and special effects all masterfully combined to create what was undoubtedly the film of that year.
The clarity of the special effects of the time was revolutionary, much like the special effects exhibited in the first Terminator. They managed to make the T-1000 machine utterly believable in its presence and ability to mould itself and transform at will as we were treated to particular moments in which it did just that. Most impressive was its rising from the mental hospital floor behind one of the guards, only to kill him and take his form. The makeup of the damage taken by the T-101 was also very well done and really did make it believable that Arnold was possibly really a machine underneath that masculine exterior.
Linda Hamilton is triumphant in this role and a complete re-imagining of the character we know from the first film. The Sarah Connor from this movie is vociferously brutish in her demeanour and is clearly a woman who has experienced something very traumatic that has meant she needed to lose the core emotions that weakened her in order to survive. Edward Furlong as the main protagonist for the entire Terminator story arch displayed a perfect character and the rebellious kid attitude was performed really well by him. It almost makes me wonder what the hell those involved in the third Terminator movie were thinking by not casting him in the lead role once more.
I honestly adore this film as it manages to become unconsciously deep and expressing of the idea to remain emotionally close whilst at the same time remaining strong in your convictions. It was well deserving of the awards it won at the time and it's quite sad to know that any future Terminator movies will not pale in comparison to the brilliance of Terminator 2. Buy it or rent it, either way, you will love it. They threw in the deleted scenes in the movie, some of them really weren't needed, but otheres made the movie more interesting. Best movie out there! this is one of my favorite movies of all time not just action. This movie is just action packed and is just fun from start to finish. I have seen this movie so many times and i still have not gotten tired of it. Terminator 2 has already been released on dvd and i have to say that if you are a huge terminator fan you should buy the first one that came out it has so much detail and information about the making of the movie that it will blow you away. This re-release is okay i guess it has a couple more special features that are worth a watch. But the real reason that this dvd was released again was for the sound and picture improvements. Let me warm you that you should have a fancy home theater to notice these improvements or else you wont really notice a change in picture or sound. But regardless this is still terminator 2 and regardless what version you nuy you wont be dissapointed. The Terminator series is one of the greatest science fiction franchises of all time. My favorite is Judgement Day, but the original is also great and I am not so sure about Rise of the Machines. The extended edition of this entry contained a lot of never-before-seen footage that helped it feel more complete. Arnold Schwarznegger and Linda Hamilton reprise their respective roles of the T-800 and Sarah Connor with a cameo of Michael Bhien as Kyle Reese in a deleted dream sequence, with newcomers like Robert Patrick as T-1000 and Edward Furlong as the adolesent John Connor. The action was exciting, the storyline was worthy of picking up where its predecesor left off, and the acting was well-rehersed. The visual effects were so real. It diddn't use CGI much, mostly miniatures, makeup, and anamatronics. The CGI was only used for the T-1000 shapeshifting parts, the right way, sparingly and hardly noticeable. Abusing CGI for living characters makes it look fake. The plot is where Skynet tries again to kill John Konnor in the past and sends the T-1000 to achieve this goal, and the future Connor sends a reprogrammed T-800 to protect his younger self. It shows John in foster care after his mother Sarah ended up in a mental institution when she tried to tell authorities about Judgement Day and thought she was a psycho. At the mall, John and his friend were attacked by the T-1000 and the T-800 comes to the rescue. John teaches him about human characteristics, such as speech, like Chill out, Hasta-la-vista, baby, no problemo, etc. John also explained why killing is wrong. It is because we have feelings. Together, they help Sarah escape from the hospital and the trio goes to stop skynet. This was a great action flick that will keep you entertained for hours, now with all these extras, and an extended version. Too bad the the original version on this DVD can only be played on a P.C. If you want to play the original version on T.V., please get the original DVD revision as well. Studio: Lions Gate Home Ent. (This series deserved to be canceled....)
(Dark Angel: The Complete Second Season)
(Not as good as season 1)
(Dark Angel Season2) I'm really disappointed, not with the series that I JUST LOVE, but the box set came with all six discs inside one keep case... That's just a poor cheap packing that does not match this amazing show. Please note, I gave the second season on Dark Angel 2 stars only because on Jessica Alba (I would have given it 1 star without her), heck she is THE ONLY reason to watch this otherwise totally unwatchable show.
The first season began with some interesting possibilities, but soon sank into a badly written, and poorly acted version of "Tank Girl", complete with human/animal hybrids. Of course, Jessica Alba was totally watchable. However, the stories were so lame, the writing was at Jr. High School levels, even this amazingly beautiful actress could not make this show worth watching.
Do yourself a favor and pass on this set of DVDs. However, if you feel the overwhelming need to waste your money on something, instead of buying this set, spend it on something like Silly Putty". You'll find Silly Putty to be more interesting, and much more entertaining. A must see set of discs... too bad there wasn't another season!!! Exceptional second season... you must get Season One discs and start at the beginning to have a wonderful viewing experience. I loved season 1, and expected great things of season 2. I was disappointed. There was a major storyline that wasn't resolved, even though this was the final season. It ended in a way that sort of completed the story, but not really. All in all, it left me wanting more with no hope of getting it. I had not watched Dark Angel when it was on TV, but a friend suggested I might like it. I purchased season one and got really addicted to the charaters and the story line. I purchased season 2 and enjoyed it as well. I recommend it to anyone who likes sci-fi. Too bad it was canceled from TV, was an excellent show. Max (Jessica Alba) is back - kicking butt and taking names in the second and final season of James Cameron's Dark Angel. After the destruction of Manticore the military organization responsible for creating Max and her fellow genetically enhanced human prototypes Max is still forced to live furtively among the underground street life of 21st century Seattle. But the day is rapidly approaching when all transgenics will have to band together if they want a chance at staking their claim in this new Freak Nation.Includes All 21 Season Two Episodes!Runtime: 943 minsFormat: DVD MOVIE Genre: TELEVISION/SERIES&SEQUELS Rating: NR UPC: 024543377580 Manufacturer No: 2237758 Rerations < Dark Angel: The Complete Second Season >

(Wonderful Story)
(A Quick, Thrilling Read)
(Classic Short Story)
(A CLASSIC) I bought copies of this book for my students. They arrived on time and in perfect condition. I knew how this book turned out before I even started it. But the author writes so wonderfully I felt like I was just learning the story as I went along. I sat up, wide-eyed, as I read the chase scene, afraid of the ghost as though it were in my room. Amazing author no wonder this is a classic. The majority of this short story is spent on developing the characters, some of which are not pertinent to the story. Once you get through the characters introduction, the story happens quickly and leaves the reader questioning what really happened and a desire for more.
If you're looking for a ghost story, this isn't the book for you. But if you're looking for a thrilling, quick read, definitely pick up this classic. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is set in the early 1800s in the Dutch farming community of Tarry Town. Ichabod Crane is the local school teacher and a scarecrow of a man. The first two thirds of the story establish a love triangle between Crane, a beautiful young heiress, and a young man named Abraham Van Brunt. The remainder of the story deals with events involving Ichabod and a certain horseman.
Those reading this book in search of a horror novel will be sorely disappointed. Much of the writing dwells on the atmosphere and charm of the setting, the nature of life in a small community, and other non-suspenseful items. There is a chase that certainly adds tension toward the end, but it is fairly brief. This is not to say that Sleepy Hollow is not worth reading. It's obviously a classic and is a pleasant read. But it's much more of a wry commentary on life in a farming community than it is a tension packed thriller. I would recommend it to any reader willing to accept it for what it is.
CLASSIC book that is a must-have for any serious reader. It is completely absorbing and the description of Sleepy Hollow transports you back in time and to the lazy little hollow. If you're heart doesn't race when Ichabod is being chased by the horseman, you might have to have your imagination checked by a physician. And for the reviewer who called Tarrytown "unbelievably fake"--I hate to tell you--it IS a VERY REAL town. It existed then and it STILL exists today. The Legend of Sleep Hollow is a story written by Washington Irving, originally published in 1820. Set in the Duth settlement of Tarry Town, New York in a secluded part of town called Sleep Holow. Ichabod Crane, a schoolmaster, competes for the hand if eighteen year old Katrina Van Tassel, only to find himself hunted by the Headless Horseman. The Legend of Sleep Hollow is one of the earliest American fiction writings to still be actively read today, and it is widely used in schools both public and private. (wow)
(One of the few books I read over and over..)
(FUN! FUN!FUN! TIL' SOMEONE LOSES....) Can't wait to read Clickers 2. Especially since Brian Keene has come aboard. This was a great horror read from start to finish. I could not believe how fast it started and I still had over 200 pages to go. I hope they make this into a movie.....
I grew up on Godzilla films and have always had a love for the "creature feature" so I find it hard not to love a good monster story.
The small town of Phillipsport, Maine is overrun by a horde of pre-historic crustaceans (which resemble crabs with scorpion-like tails) that devour all that they come across. As the town's citizens fight back they learn that the "Clickers" are not the only ones coming out of the sea. Humanoid beings later dubbed "The Dark Ones" follow the Clickers on shore and attack the townsfolk while they are dealing with the aftermath of the Clicker invasion. A group of townsfolk join together in attempt to survive the brutal invasion of both species in a wonderfully written story (although the editor could have fixed several spelling errors) that paints a vivid image of utter horror and animal brutality.
I have only read one other novel by J.F. Gonzalez (an excellent novel called "Survivor") but between the two stories, he proves that he is not afraid to go the extreme to make his story believable. I am very happy to have read this novel and am proud to keep it on my bookshelf. I have never read anything by this author and I was blown away by this book. Just when you think things can't get any worse for the characters they get 1000x worse. If your a fan of the blood and gore then you will not be disappointed. Can't wait to read the sequel When I first heard about Clickers I just thought it was going to be another sea creature story, I was proven wrong.. very wrong. Clickers are big lobster/crab/scorpion type creatures. They are agressive, hungry and their stinger injects a very acidic substance. And when they invade a small town all hell breaks loose. But the townspeople think they have everything under control after a fight, but oh, they are so dead wrong. Something is hunting the clickers. Also we see how Williams and Gonzalez incorperate an actual even that happend, in their own words they explain why. One thing is for sure, Maine is no longer just Mr. King's writing territory. RIP Mark Williams, he died after this book was released. JF is going to one day be considored a great in horror fiction. The ending makes you feel like your going to die, like you are actually in this book. Biggest bought of hopelessness I have ever felt from a novel or movie. I hope one day (if he already hasn't) he will write a sequel or prequel to Clickers. FILL IN ANY BODY PART YOU LIKE HERE! IF YOU LIKE CAMPY, "B" MOVIE TYPE HORROR(DONE WELL)THAN THIS IS A BOOK FOR YOU! Happy Reading! A PEACEFUL NEW ENGLAND VILLAGE, TERROR LIES LURKING BENEATH THE SURFACE...Quaint seaport village Phillipsport, Maine seems to be the perfect place for novelist Rick Sychek to settle in order to write his next novel. On his drive into town Rick runs over what appears to be a large crab in the road. (A great start to the Noble Dead series, looking forward to reading the rest.)
(Awesome) I love the entire Noble Dead series, and I loan my copies to everyone I know.
I actually read SISTER OF THE DEAD first, and then realized it was a series and went back and bought this first one.
This is a wonderfully entertaining novel with a very original and yet "easy to read" writing style that just swept me away.
In most of the Noble Dead books, the Hendees make sure the readers sort of "understand" the villians' motives, but in this one . . . the reader isn't sure who to cheer for because on some level, you like almost everyone--and yet everyone has flaws.
I genuinely liked the vampires in this book, and I thought the Rashed/Teesha relationship was probably the most interesting relationship in the story.
But all the characters are great. I can't suggest this series enough. I enjoyed the set up of this book. The main characters go around robbing poor peasants of their money by pretending to be vampire and hunter. It turns out that thievery is in one of the character's blood as hunting is in the other. The hunter decided to settle down and manage an inn, and her partner goes along for the ride. On the way there the duo meet a few real vampires. The hunter denies what is right in front of her face. All of that was pretty interesting, and that was the front part of the book. Unfortunately the characters decide to go on a 50 page hunt of the vampires through a tunnel. It takes another 50 pages for the main character to learn about what she is and accept it. The novel was too drawn out. I couldn't stomach the 50 page long chase scene, it is entirely too much. I was very let down with the second half of this novel. It started out so well, I really wanted to like it. The characters were decent, though the back story of the vampires was more interesting than our main characters. Robbing peasants for years didn't help us relate to the characters. Just a mediocre effort at best. I wouldn't recommend this. I am amazed at how many good reviews this book received. The writing is weak. The characters are flat and irrational and completely unbelievable. One example: very early in the book, we are told that one of the main characters has silver-blonde, waist length hair, which he must keep hidden most of the time. What? Why in the world would anybody keep their hair waist length if it has to be hidden all the time? Seems like shorter hair would be much easier to hide. The only possible explanation is that the long hair makes it easier for him to pretend to be a vampire?? But if they can manage fake, spring-loaded wooden stakes and packets of blood for their little scams (where they basically rob innocent people for no good reason), I'm sure they could also come up with a wig. So, he has long, beautiful, shimmering hair, because that's what characters in fantasy books are supposed to have. Never mind that it makes absolutely NO SENSE!
Yes, that's a small quibble, but it's a good example of the idiocy the reader is asked to accept. Beautiful people, with no thought applied to intelligent characters. High on style, low on substance. Nothing to actually grab your interest. Don't waste your time. I'm not a big fan of vampire novels as a rule, but as this was set in a medieval period I thought I would give this book a chance, and I must say that i'm glad I did, this book has great characters and a good plot with a decent amount action too. I'll give you a little intro into the book now.
The story starts with Magiere and Leesil two con artists who go from small town to small town pretending to be vampire hunters, after their last job they are camping in the woods when they're attacked by a real vampire who believes them to be real hunters, after the battle the vampire dead they head to a small town to open an inn, what they don't know is that the brother of the vampire they killed has made this small town his home, with his family of the noble dead he starts a war with the hunters only to find Magiere is his worst nightmares come to life.
This is a decent read, i'm hoping the next books in the series are going to be better, from the reviews on Amazon I think they will be.
I really enjoyed Dhampir. The relationship development between Magiere (the Dhampir) and Leesil (her half-elf cohort), is very satisfying. The story development and action scenes are very good. SHE HUNTS THE REALMS MOST DANGEROUS GAME. HER FEES ARE EXORBITANT. SHE'S WORTH EVERY COIN SHE RECEIVES. OR IS SHE?Magiere has earned a reputation as the most formidable vampire slayer in the land. Villagers far and wide welcome her with both awe and disdain, grateful to her for ridding their towns of the undead menace, but finding themselves made poorer for their salvation. Magiere has always known she's dealing with simple folk who only wish to have their superstitions silenced, and she's never seen anything wrong with exploiting them for profit. Now, tired of the game, Magiere and her partner, the half-elf Leesil, are ready to hang up their weapons and settle down in a place they can finally call home. But their new found peace will not last. For Magiere has come to the attention of a trio of powerful and dangerous vampires who recognize her true identity even if she does not and who fear the birthright that flows through her veins. And they will stop at nothing to keep Magiere from fulfilling her destiny. Rerations < Dhampir (Noble Dead) >

(It aint the book , but it IS worth watching)
(Quirky, Sly, And Actually Works)
(Skip the movie and read the books.) AR's sound-track should be set to Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Chaingin'":
"Come gather 'round idiots wherever you roam... and admit that your brains are now turning to foam!"
In all fairness: IF you are between 18-25 going on 12, IF you can bear to pull your withering brain away from the Play Station mom 'n' pop got you last X-mas for a bit, and IF you are a classic under-achiever whose main ambition in life is to be a burden on society...then this cinematic garbage is right up your alley! Go for it...LOL! ;~)) Having only read the first book in the Eric Garcia trilogy (Anonymous, Casual and Hot&Sweaty - great titles when accompanied by Rex), I cannot say how this tracks against the other 2 books, but it definitely is NOT the plot of the first book. Also, some of the supporting characters are different and the subplots are twisted around a good bit. So, if you liked the book, do not watch this expecting a faithful rendering into cinema.
Instead, think of it as inspired by the book(s) and watch it for the sheer goofy fun of it. Sure, some of the gimmicks are pretty, well, gimmicky, but that just makes it more enjoyable, IMHO. Sci-Fi Channel just does not have the budget to make a first-rate movie, but this is one heck of a second-rater!
In short, it aint the book, but it IS worth watching.
I'll admit that when I first saw this film promoted on the SciFi channel a couple of years ago, I laughed it off as just another bad SciFi channel flick. Let's be honest here, dinosaurs attempting to live amongst humans by disguising themselves to look like humans sounds pretty silly. Dinosaurs, or at least the popular ones, are supposed to be these large, man-eating monsters. The vegetarian dinosaurs, like the stegosaurus and the triceratops, have been built up as gentle giants by pop culture.
In this story, however, the dinosaurs are private investigators, doctors, lawyers, eco-warriors, Faye Dunaway, Isaac Hayes--you name it. They've surpassed the "apes" in a number of categories, including, as far as this story is concerned, forensics. A murder occurs that directly affects Vincent Rubio (Sam Trammell), a dino who's having an image problem. His P.I. buddy, gamely played by Daniel Baldwin, has a couple of problems of his own. One involves a potential girlfriend and the other involves his daughter. As the dino duo begin to break down the murder mystery, they uncover the plot of a renegade dinosaur to destroy the human race and once again let the lizards rule the Earth.
It's all done with tongue-in-cheek attitude and plenty of sarcastic humor. Unlike another reviewer, I found this film to be quite funny. It's not dark at all, unless you count the bits where the lighting is toned down to hide the obvious CGI shortcomings. The story is what moves this film along, not the special FX. I don't really care how bad the CGI is if the story is strong enough to overcome it.
I've never read any of the books. In fact, until I saw this movie, I didn't even know the books existed. Perhaps I'll check them out in the future. Until then, I'll gladly say that this film is a decent flick to watch on a rainy afternoon. It won't advance you intellectually, but it will pass a good ninety minutes without leaving you feeling cheated.
Rent this one today if you want an offbeat take on a murder mystery. It's actually a pretty good flick sprinkled with a little silliness and attitude. Mildly recommended. The premise: dinosaurs faked their extinction and are living among us in human disguises.
Okay, with that out of the way, the movie is called Anonymous Rex, but the plot comes from Casual Rex, the second novel in the series. Even then it's just the basic idea. It's not based on the book, it only vaguely resembles the idea of a cult of dinosaurs who want to shed their human disguises and come out of hiding by revolting against the human race. This makes the movie easier to judge in its own right because even someone who's read the books won't be too biased. What we have is, well, made for TV.
Budget. As described in the books, the CGI required to make these dinosaurs come to life (like stepping into and out of latex human disguises) would be incredibly complicated and expensive. It's barely imaginable when reading the books, think of the difficulty making it believable in a movie! So the filmmakers took the expected shortcut by changing the latex guises to digital holograms. This way they only had to make CGI dino-heads and paste them on top of the actor's bodies. It's very cheap and cowardly. We only get to see Vincent's dino-head for a grand total of 10 seconds spread out over the course of the whole movie and he doesn't even look like a raptor! He's a generic reptile-like-thingy with a stubby snout. Is that supposed to be a dinosaur?! It doesn't help the premise, it undermines it! Furthermore, Ernie's head and claws are both seen once (3 seconds each). Young Vincent is seen only for a few seconds in a flashback. Altogether, there are only three dinosaur heads in the whole movie standing in for the entire sub-population. It's corny. Reminds me of the original Star Trek series: "Yes, we *are* aliens. We've all taken on human form for no apparent reason, but we ARE powerful aliens and in our natural forms we are multi-limbed and have three heads, but for reasons NOT related to show budget whatsoever we have taken on human form and you should revere us anyway." There was a commercial for Gatorade in the mid-90s that showed more raptor than this (and it actually looked like a raptor). This is a movie! Why make it if you're not going to show us anything?!
Tone. The movie is very dark and humorless, unlike the books which are light and full of sarcastic humor. As usual the movie keeps everything in the dark so it doesn't look so absurd when seen. It took itself too seriously. It's more like an episode of Law and Order than anything Eric Garcia wrote: emotionless, just-the-facts, and contrived.
Time. 90 minutes was not enough time to build a unique world, tell a mind-blowing mystery, and add depth to the characters at the same time. You'd think that if the filmmakers weren't going to show us the dinos they'd at least make the mystery engaging, right? There is barely any mystery. Our private-eyes are faced with a question and then in the next scene they answer it. There is no buildup or suspense. The mystery and the solution to it are spelled out (not presented) before the first hour. Without the dinosaurs it's just a generic detective story. Nothing special about it at all.
At the same time the movie tries to show some kind of dilemma for Vincent, that he almost joins the cult, but it's glazed over so quickly that there is nothing to digest. There's no time to develop the characters or give weight to the events, so the actors only needed to use two emotions throughout the whole movie (straight-faced and angry). I don't blame the actors, I blame the script and the TV limits. No time for depth. No time for story. No budget for visuals. No room for humor.
Now, speaking as a fan of the books, I notice the following: In the book Ernie does not have a daughter, he is divorced from his wife, and he is not a triceratops. Why change all that here? It didn't add anything consequential to the movie except a damsel in distress, a single father the audience can better identify with, and a species the audience will recognize. Wait...never mind.
The book has dinosaurs out of their disguises, walking around, getting into bloody fights, talking to each other as dinosaurs, even having sex as dinosaurs! There are mansions, a private island, huge crowds of dinosaurs. The climax of the book is big. Very big. Absurdly big and tongue-and-cheek hilarious as the crowd of celebrity look-alike cross-dressers storms in and fights the cultists.
The movie? It had the budget for three dinosaur heads (20 seconds total), two hands (5 seconds), flickering holographic disguises, two unused rubber suits made to look like the actors, half a dilophosaurus in a darkened room, and Young Vincent (8 seconds). It all builds to the movie's climax: Vincent takes five seconds to decide *not* to open a door. Oh... The suspense... That was it?! That was the end?! That was final confrontation?! Yeah, it's a made-for-TV movie and we're supposed to keep our expectations low, but I had hoped for something better.
They did do a few things right. Conveying the sense of smell with visual cues was well-done. Ernie was brilliantly cast. He was just as I pictured him. And the idea that all dinosaurs have this desire to revolt against the human race is an interesting twist (even though the books show the opposite attitude). I'd like to see how this idea pans out...but of course if this becomes a TV series it will have an even lower budget and we won't see *that* either.
The movie is pedestrian, cheap, stiff and humorless compared to the story Eric Garcia wrote. All the changes to the story were the result of low budget. Again, why did they bother to make it if they weren't going to show us any dinosaurs? Why couldn't it have been a real movie with an actual budget and with more time to put some depth into the characters so it didn't come across as the first episode of yet another generic TV crime series? That's all this is. "Anonymous Rex" could've been special, but because of budget it got downsized to a "Law and Order" clone.
Skip the movie. Read the books. All of them. Hollywood is still limited by budget but books can do anything. Studio: Peace Arch Home Entertain Release Date: 03/11/2008 Run time: 90 minutes Rerations < Anonymous Rex >

(Not very recent but still a must have)
(lots to do)
(underated)
(1 of the best games I've ever played) Good older game...CD is very good condition, as described. Shipping was very good as well I had bought this game at Mardens about 6-7 years ago and during the years had ended up misplacing on of the CD's. Unfortunatly you need all 3 CD's to beat the game, so I was in tough situation. Happened to be crusing through Amazon when I had the idea to see if they had it, and sure enough they did. The quality was perfect, even though it was used. Definitely a 5 star :-D I have enjoyed all the "Alone in the Dark" games. Adventure games are my favorite genre. This one goes back to the basic mansion crawl. I downloaded a couple walkthroughs from the internet plus the cheat codes and game hints. I am playing it with infinite health, ammunition, and almost 100 saves. I need help to get through any computer game. Still, it's taking a long time to complete. My walkthrough did not point out that most rooms and hallways have lightswitches, but when I discovered that, it greatly enhanced the enjoyment of the scenery. This is something new that allows the player to see the artwork. It's also a 2-for-one game in that it can be played as either of two characters, and both are different enough to make each time through enjoyable. A very good underated game. A steal at under $5.00. I wish there was a sequel because i would buy it. (I suck at spelling keep that in mind)When I first found this game it was at gamestop for Ps1 I thaut it looked cool so I got it and i'm glad I did.To start out with I disliked the camra it was seen by seen(NOT point and click)and you didnt no where it would be placed(in a window, right next to you,a few yards away, stuff like that) but when I got use to it I relly liked it.well I got stuck more times than I can count and put it away for awile and perodicly played it then came a day I got my Xbox 360 and I sold my Ps2.Well I got to thinking about this game again wishing I would have finished it so I got it for pc (found it here for a cent plus shipping :))and the graphics were much better than the ps1.well you no what I beat edward carnby in less than 2 days,a bit longer for aline cedrac, and I had to admit that it was on the top of the list for me.but I took 1 star off because it can get very frustrating but dont let that get you down.now people who say its a resident evil(except for the engine) bull crap alone in the dark was around in 1992 and resident evil was around in 1996,Tomb raider times, (and its a lot less gory.)you can run in this one (for those who have been familear with the series)which is a magor upgrade,no longer pressing the derectional keys to attack you hold down the left mouse button, use the mouse or derectional keys to point your wepon, and right click to shoot.well those of you who are familear with the series the engine (unless posted above)is the same(3d things in a 2d background :).)Buy or ignore, its up to you I hope this helped and plz exuse my spelling mistakes :). rank 9.5 out of 10. Alone in the Dark (PC CD-ROM), Product #23674 Edward Carnby, the supernatural detective, is back! And this time it's for revenge. Carnby's best friend, Charles Fiske, has been found dead near Shadow Island, a mysterious island off the coast of Maine. Carnby's investigation quickly leads him to Fred Johnson, who informs him of Fiske's search for the three ancient tablets that, when placed in a specific location, will unlock an incredible and dangerous power. Johnson pleads with Carnby to pick up where Fiske left off and reopen the investigation. Carnby accepts the mission to find and destroy the murderer of Fiske and avenge his death. The original survival-horror franchise continues with a pure blend of intense action and suspenseful adventure.Alone in the Darkimmerses the player into a dark and strange atmosphere where conventional rules do not apply. The player must overcome his natural fear of the dark unknown and control Edward Carnby through a deep and highly detailed story line. Armed with a flashlight and a pistol, Carnby must find the necessary items to survive, as well as the clues that will help him escape his ultimate nightmare. Alone in the Darkfeatures an immersive and emotional story line with more than 20 characters; incredibly detailed and realistic environments; and a dark atmosphere that plays with obscurity and light. customer 's review (Tense Psychological Thriller)
(FRIGHTPLAN...)
(2 stars out of 4)
(Cool! Rachel McAdams can save me any day)
(Snake On A Plane) SOME SPOILERS INCLUDED.
In this taut suspense-thriller, Murphy plays a charming stranger that our protagonist, Lisa, meets on a Red Eye flight to Miami. Their chemistry is immediate and she finds herself drawn to the attractive guy with the intense blue eyes. The first part of the movie misleads the viewer into letting down their guard and joining in their flirtation.
But their meeting was not happenstance instead it's part of a larger plot involving a political assassination that Murphy's character "Jackson Rippner" (yes, even Jackson is in on the joke) has orchestrated as a "manager" of government overthrows and high profile assassinations.
What follows in the second half is an intense mind game/power struggle between Lisa and her tormentor, all on-board an airplane. This claustrophobic scene plays particularly well and both actors should be commended on their performances. They are so real that the instances of violence really shock. (particularly the knock-out scene)
The last part of the movie amps up the action and pushes our characters into a showdown. While at this point it becomes less realistic, it does offer some fun action including an explosion thrown in for good measure.
While I fully expected Murphy's suave, arrogant character to get the beat-down that he so deserved, I did find the shift from the ultra-controlled, condesending assassin to the less than effective killer to be a bit "off" but I was the only one in my family that noted it so it just must be me. (yeah, yeah, he was stabbed and shot, that will put anyone off their game)
Don't let the PG13 rating put you off.. it's tense. The violence isn't over-the-top gore but it is effective. The film's short running time keeps everything in motion. And I liked Rippner's ambiguous end. Perhaps they had a sequel in mind?
Also, just for fun note Cillian's character (Jackson) states that he never lies.. if that's true then check out the subtle way he side-steps Lisa's question when she asks him if he is a hitman... Hotel manager Lisa (Rachel McAdams) is on the red eye flight home after attending her grandmother's funeral. She is seated next to a young man named Jackson (Cillian Murphy from 28 Days Later and Sunshine) whom she had met earlier in the terminal. The two get along famously, until Jackson reveals his secret. Lisa is now part of a plot involving political assassination and the life of her own father (Brian Cox from Manhunter and The Ring)! Surrounded by a plane-full of clueless passengers, Lisa must figure out a way to stop Jackson's plan and save several lives. RED EYE is horror director Wes Craven's shot at a straight-out thriller, and he comes through just fine. The tension mounts while Lisa and Jackson are in the air, and culminates in a wham-bam finalé on the ground! Well worth seeing and owning... The Bottom Line:
Though it begins inventively and features a creepy Cillian Murphy, Red Eye quickly degrades into just about the most formulaic thriller you can imagine; look elsewhere if you want a movie that has something of interest beyond a laughably bad final shot. The plot leads one to think that McAdams as Lisa can't handle the pressure or control the situation brought upon by the smooth-talking terrorist Jack Rippner (played by Cillian Murphy). You get the feeling she's going to be one of those hysterical female types, intimidated by a terrorist. Rippner uses both mental and physical abuse during the flight back home, to get Lisa to switch hotel rooms of the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security (using her Management Power and Authority) so that his cohorts get a good target to hit. Brian Cox plays Lisa's Dad, who is the unsuspecting hostage that will be killed unless Lisa complies to Rippner's demands.
Ah.. but, Lisa ends up kicking butt. She first performs an unscheduled "trachaeotomy" on Rippner with a pen (i.e. stabs him in the throat), and then escapes just as the plane lands. She then proceeds to steal an SUV from the "Departing Flights" drop-off area and uses it to smash into and send the would-be assassin of her Dad through the front doors of the house. And finally, as Rippner catches up to her at the house; takes him for a tour of the house (a la hide-and-seek) before she and daddy put a couple of holes in him.
Jayma Mays plays Cynthia, Lisa's co-worker and front desk agent at the hotel. She lacks confidence, is not very well organized and space-out to a point of being annoying. But she, like Lisa is able to "keep cool" when the chips are down, and ends up being a life-saver in the end. She really turns out to be quite cute with her lines. Especially her ending line in the movie. SURPRISINGLY GOOD MOVIE. I didn't know what this movie was all about befroe I watched it. I thought it was a supernatural thriller of some sort. I was actually intrigued when the plot started unfolding, I was thinking wow what an original concept. I will admit the story was original and fresh, the acting was fantastic. I think Cillian Murpghy is one of a kind. His look is so unusual and androgenous, he is hot isn't he? Once the plane landed and she stuck him with the pen, the movie started to take another direction of textbook run and chase, good guy vs. bad guy. You could pretty much write the ending yourself. Heroin saves the day and everyone goes home happy. I would have liked one more twist in the plot at the end, to give the movie and edge over your standard thriller. Movie UMD Veteran horror director Wes Craven lends his proven talent to the non-horror thrillerRed-Eye, turning it into an above-average potboiler that makes the most of its 85 tension-packed minutes. That's a perfect running time for a movie like this, in which a resourceful heroine Lisa (Rachel McAdams, the breakout star of 2005) is trapped on a red-eye flight with creepy villain Jackson Rippner (Cillian Murphy, even more menacing than he was as the Scarecrow inBatman Begins) who's playing middle-man in the plot to assassinate a Homeland Security official. He's got her father pinned down by a would-be killer, using that advantage to coerce Lisa into phoning the luxury resort where she works and arranging to move the target into a pre-set position. It's a situation from which there is seemingly no escape, but of course Craven and screenwriter Carl Ellsworth find a way to milk the suspenseful dilemma for all it's worth, even managing to wedge in a few intriguing character details to enhance the fast-moving plot. It's still a B-movie, but it's tightly constructed and well-executed by Craven, whose previous films made him a perfect choice to maximize all thatRed-Eyehas to offer.--Jeff Shannon Rerations < Red Eye [UMD for PSP] >
