customer 's review (Please make it PG-13)
(Bad movie for young kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Scooby's Ultimate Movie, But Beware.)
(ALERT!!!!!!!! this isn't for young children!!!!)
(Welcome back Scooby-Doo) This is definitely Scary. For young children this movie is way too scary and my kids don't freak to easily.
I can see how others like it. But becareful how you intriduce it to your child.
Mr. Timothy Lee-you should be ashamed to let your 4 year old watch this movie over and over. This movie crosses many lines of cartoon and horror flick. Compared to the other Scooby movies, this is more graphic and not quite so much fun. It is fine for teens and up, but get real. This shouldn't be a movie called a 'family' movie, and you should be doing the responsible thing and knowing what is OK and what isn't for young children to watch. Your 4 year old relies on you to be his parent-so be one! For some time Scooby Doo was all but retired and made a brief comeback with "Laughalympics." In 1998, the original Scooby Doo gang would reunite to make this phenomenal movie. But do beware. PG 13 would probably be a more appropriate rating for this movie. It goes to levels Scooby Doo never before went. And while well done, it would probably be a good idea for parents to screen it first and then decide if it is appropriate for children. Well, that said, this Scooby movie is quite arguably Scooby's greatest movie. To make sense of Scooby's long retirement, there is a flashback with Scooby and the gang solving yet another mystery. Some time passes, and the gang has went their seperate ways. Daphne and Fred have a television show and decide they want to see some real ghosts. Except for Fred, the voice casting is different. But they did a good job of finding voices that at least resembled the original voices. (If it's any comfort, the original voice cast would eventually reunite for the 5th and 6th movies.) Moving on, the gang does get back together, and they head towards New Orleans in hopes of seeing some real ghosts. (2 of the 5 parties are of course reluctant. Guess which 2.) Down in Louisiana, they find some more cases of just 'bad guys in masks.' Later they meet Lena who flirts with Fred and offers to show them her employer's (Simone's) haunted house. They also meet Jaques who seems nice enough and the gardener who does not seem so nice. After Scooby fights with Simone's cats, Simone is understandably annoyed, but she agrees to let the gang in. Soon afterwards, we see some things that appear to indicate the presence of ghosts, but as any Scooby fan knows, there might be a rational explanation, and if so, what is the motive? Scooby and Shaggy offer some comical moments with their too healthy appetities. Soon afterwards, clues start appearing that would make us suspect that some real ghosts are involved, but there is some room for doubt. One thing about this Scooby movie is that the expansion from 30 minutes to 90 or so is a good one. It gives us time to remeet the gang, and time to wonder if the ghosts are real or not, and enjoy some welcome suspense as well. Of all Scooby's adventures, this is one of the LEAST contrived and predictable. Another thing you will notice in this Scooby movie is a surprisingly intense soundtrack. (And I had NO problem whatsoever with that!) In a typical Scooby fashion, the gang gets separated and the horror unfolds. This is one ending I won't give away. But I will say true horror unfolds as we find that surprises shock us for a moment, but then make sense upon discovery. The explosion of misleads enables us to say: "Oh! No wonder!" In all honesty, this movie is more frightening than a lot of so called horror on the market. And perhaps the most frightening moment in this movie is when the 'villain' explains the events that preceeded that of the movie. Good writers seem to know that recognition is often the most horror filled aspect of a story. Again, I consider this a strong contender for Scooby's greatest movie, but do be warned. It may very well be too much for young children. this is not a movie for kids! it has real monsters (i know the box tells you that but the art of the film is very grapic and the story is very much ment for adults) so be sure you watch this movie before you show it to kids. now as for the movie it's self it really isn't very good and isn't part of the scooby-doo series as far as i see it!!! just plain not good!!!!!!!! I've been watching Scooby-Doo for more than 20 years, it's one of my favorite cartoon shows, when it was really a good show, before that stupid Scrappy came into the show.
Anyway, the Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island is one of my favorite movies. When they decide to get back the Scooby show again and the movies, this was the first one, back in 1999. Like I said, for me is the best one. I like the new look on the characters, the story, everything.
If I were going to end the Scooby-Doo show (and the movies) forever, this should have been the last movie or last episode of the show. I mean, it's been a couple of years since the gang were split, and they reunite for like a one last mystery and the cool thing is that this time, the monsters are real. Some people didn't like that, but that's the cool part of the movie.
Besides all that, the animation is very cool, like watching some anime movie, the colors area great, the music, everything, it's just Scooby-Doo. Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne and Fred reunite to solve the most frightfully funny mystery of their careers. The scream team's headed to a haunted bayou island to investigate the ghost of Moonscar the Pirate. But it turns out the swashbuckler's spirit isn't the only creepy character on the island. customer 's review (monstamash relation?)
(great classic)
(It's (almost) alive!)
(Great for nostalgia, but a little dated)
(Let's Party) just ok film which is the 1&only w/ the pet blob in its dog house brief scene near the end; dont know if it inspired the song monstermash or vice versa, still, unknown. I admit I didn't open it yet, but I grew up watching Rankin&Bass animated shows and enjoy them so I'm sure I'll like this too! Remember on Halloween when someone invariably handed out a pack of crayons or a small bag of pennies to trick-or-treaters? You were probably a little confused at first, then a little disappointed, but you probably used the crayons or spent the pennies anyway. Mad Monster Party is like Halloween crayons to me - not very exciting but certainly adequate.
The Pros: The sets and character designs are awesome - very detailed with some mod 1960's touches (the Monster's Mate rocks a pair of white go-go boots). The send-ups of classic Hollywood monster movies can be quite funny and clever, and the tongue-in-cheek nihilism of the ending makes for a memorable finale. In terms of the image and sound quality of the DVD, nothing seems to have been lost in the transfer from the original print and in fact may have enhanced the original audio/video experience.
The Cons: In between the gags and humorous references lies filler in a plot costume. In my opinion, the plot here is a distraction - Dr. Frankenstein is ready to retire and chooses his nebbishy nephew Felix as his heir. The monsters disapprove and in a series of alliances and betrayals attempt to exterminate the interloper. It's all rather uninteresting to me and kind of superfluous as the best parts (the titular party where a skeletal band plays and a monstrous food fight takes place; the picnic in the jungle where Dracula unsuccessfully tries to ambush Felix) seem to happen extraneous to the plot. In addition to the weak plot, the songs are tolerable but not very memorable. I doubt you'll be humming these tunes after the credits roll.
If you happen to find this DVD in your Halloween goodie bag, appreciate it for what it is, have a little chuckle, groove to the retro score, then gorge on the fat and calories of richer Halloween treats like Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride. It had been many years since I'd seen this film--I saw it on its release and I remembered it as being one of my favorite Rankin-Bass movies. And there are some genuinely fun sections, especially the semi-sarcastic moments (the character of Francesca has a lot of these). But by and large the film doesn't hold up as well as, say, Rudolph; and I must admit that both "The Nightmare Before Christmas" and "The Corpse Bride," inspired by "Mad Monster Party," are better films. The songs here are especially not very inspired--though the MUSIC (mostly in the score) is a real trip. It's still worth seeing the skeletal Beatles sing "The Mummy," and the Zombie Birdmen are well worth watching. Karloff is given relatively little to do besides provide an atmospheric voice, and Phyllis Diller is particularly poorly used, reigned in and controlled by the need to keep the film appropriate for children. Yetch, the blue-faced Peter Lorre character, is still fun--but I was surprised at how much I preferred the scenes between Felix and Francesca (which are genuinely funny) to the monsters!
So it's worth a peek for the sake of nostalgia, and certainly everyone who is a fan of Tim Burton ought to have this in their collection. But despite even Burton's own clear admiration and debt to this Rankin Bass classic, I have to say that Burton is far better. Mad Monster Party was released on March 8, 1969 and is one hour and thirty-four minutes long. Monsters included in this movie are the Frankenstein Monster (throughout the movie he his called Fang), the monster's mate (voiced by Phyllis Diller), Dracula, Werewolf, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Creature (as in the Creature From the Black Lagoon), The Invisible Man, Quasimodo or the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and King Kong (King Kong is referred to It throughout the movie). We have the mad scientist, Baron Boris von Frankenstein (voiced by Boris Karloff), a cute female assistant, Francesca (voiced by Gale Garnett), and the Baron's nerdy nephew, Felix Flankin. The story goes that Baron Boris von Frankenstein is retiring at the head of the Worldwide Organization of Monsters and is choosing a new leader who will inherit his latest invention and all of his secrets to go with it. Unknown to the monsters, he has chosen Felix Flankin. Felix works in a drugstore and has allergies. When he gets the invitation he heads to the Isle of Evil. The monsters find out about the Baron's plan and try to eliminate Felix and Francesca. Francesca sends letter to It for help. In the end, Baron Boris von Frankenstein blows up the island with all the monsters on it and Felix and Francesca flee the island. At the closing, one has to wonders if Felix is also a creation. Mad Monster Party is a children movie and was thus geared to a child liken. This would be Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass full length motion picture. This movie is funny and even adults will have a laugh. Love the classic monsters Frankenstein, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll, the Creature, Dracula, the Werewolf, and the Invisible Man? They're all here in this animated, 90-minute video--and so are the vocal talents of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller. After discovering the secret of destruction, Baron von Frankenstein is retiring as head of the World Wide Organization of Monsters. He's handpicked his mortal nephew Felix to be his successor, and his fellow monsters are less than pleased. Even though Felix politely declines to carry on this family tradition, the monsters band together and double-cross one another in comic attempts to expel Felix from the group. The "Rankin/Bass Animagic process" of using stop-motion photography with three-dimensional figures makes this video a visual feast for animation buffs, but it is outdated compared to modern animation techniques. Humorous details, like the count looking into a mirror to comb his hair and seeing only his comb reflected, permeate the video and will have viewers chuckling out loud and on alert for potential missed laughs. This video is best for children from about 5 to 12 years old or adults who want to reminisce over a movie viewed in their childhood.--Tami Horiuchi Rerations < Mad Monster Party >

(Still fun in 2-D but Why Not 3-D?)
(MY FIRST MONSTER FILM.)
(Love On The Amazon)
(CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON-Lost 3D Technology) This movie is one hour and nineteen minutes long and was released on March 5, 1954. The movie starts out with the creation of Earth and then goes right into the story. When a scientist, Dr. Carl Maia, discovers a skeletal hand with webbed fingers. He goes back to tell his friend Dr. David Reed and tells his co-scientists and a trip is launch to find more of this hand. Once in the Black Lagoon, they discover a creatue living there. The underwater shots are breath taking. I love it when Kay Lawrence is swimming in the lagoon and the Creature is trying to make a pass at her. The Creature From the Black is a great movie to own. The Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of those classic 50s drive in horror flicks that abounded during that time. It is still fun and I enjoy it. The picture and the black and white is wonderful. I only wish they had included the 3-D version too. I saw that at the movie theatre about 3 years ago and that was fun! This was my first "monster" film. I can remember the stir that it caused when it was first released and remember that my mother would not allow me to attend. Now telling an ten year old boy that there is "forbidden fruit" at the local cinema, and telling him that there was no way he was going to attend, is a pretty sure fire way of getting that kid in the theater, one way or another. Yup, I went. (I fear this is indicative of a character trait, or flaw, if you will, that is with me still, after all these years). You have to remember that this was in 1954 and things were quite different. We lived in a very small town, Southern and quite conservative, and ticket prices at the time were .10 cents for kids under twelve, and there was no rating system. Anyway, this movie absolutely terrified me, and it terrified my friends...it was GREAT! We loved it!
I recently watched this movie again and was delighted that so much had stuck with me over the years. It seemed like only yesterday that I first saw it. The movie is of course is in black and white, which to my mind, made so many of those old monster/space/horror movies so effective. The acting in this one is actually quite good. Now you must remember that at ten years old, I was just beginning to figure out that there was a profound difference between girls and boys, and it was a difference I very much felt I liked...did not really know why, just knew I liked it. In current terms, I could only describe Julie Adams and her white bathing suit as "hot." Apparently the creature did too, because he spent most of the film trying to drag her off. Can't say as I really blame him much either. Anyway, I think I probably had my first "actress" crush at that time.
The story line is rather good in this picture and is probably known my most folks in the known universe, who have the slightest interest in films of this genre. The plot is well covered by other reviewers here. It has been raised to the status of "classic," and this rating, in my opinion, is well deserved. You must remember that this film was done without the advantage of special effects, color and high tech sound. The creature wore a rubber suit, but looked oh so real! The underwater sequences are still as good today as they were at the time the movie was made. For this grade and class of movie, the casting and acting were quite well done, rather amazingly so, when you consider some of the other clunkers that were fed to us in those days (and still are being fed to us, when you think about it).
Now several reviewers, and critics alike, have pointed out that the monster in this particular picture was, of all the monsters in those times, the least loveable and least able to gain sympathy from the audience. I personally did not find this to be true. I remember at the time I first saw it, I was more on the creatures side that on the boat load of scientists. I have to admit, after recently watching it again; my sympathies were still with the monster. As unlovable as he was, I still sort of felt sorry for him and could see his side if the issues.
If you love movies, something I dearly love, no matter the genre, this is really one you should see, if you have not already done so. It is part of our movie heritage and it would be a shame to miss it. And by the way, 54 years later....I still think Julie Adams and her white bathing suit was pretty hot! Creature from the Black Lagoon D. Blankenship
CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON is one of the least scary monster movies I have ever seen. Sure, it probably seemed more frightening to the original 1954 audience who saw it in 3D on a big screen but it's tough for the modern viewer to forget the creature is a man in a rubber suit and the actors are rather obviously on a LA back lot not the Amazon. The story is basically a love triangle (or would that be a love quadrangle?) Gorgeous Kay (played by the lovely Julie Adams) somehow manages to look immaculate in her rather revealing wardrobe even after days floating on a boat through the Amazon jungle. Kay, we are told, is a research scientist who owes her career to Mark a trigger happy rich guy who is the leader of this Amazonian expedition and in love with her. She really loves fellow scientist David, a more sensitive type with a respect for nature. The creature is her third love interest who watches her from afar before reaching up the courage to grab her and take her to his grotto. There are some violent scenes and several crew member meet death at the monster's hands though the gore level is minimal. The movie has several well done underwater scenes but since like most of Universal's monster movies this is filmed in black and white the viewer feels a little cheated in missing some of the beautiful river life. A real pleasure of the film is the music and the creature even has his own theme which is played whenever he makes an appearance conveniently calling wondering attentions back to the movie. For lovers of classic monster movies this is likely a must see but for the average film fan like myself it is nothing out of the ordinary. This film was another of Universal Studio's accomplishments which I now rate at only 3 stars, however, at the time it was released would have rated at 5.
When I first went to see the CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON at the urging of my older brother, I was an eight year old who had no idea what he was in store for. I had no knowledge that this film was to be presented in 3D format by our local neighborhood theater and the projectionist did an excellent job.
There were no problems with visible double images, no headaches, and none of the usual complaints leveled against 3D films. In fact, if all 3D productions had been presented this well I think that technology would have caught on.
The plot was basic enough but more than adequate for the demonstration of the new technology. The full body Creature garment was amazing for any studio including Universal, and would have been advanced for a movie produced today. It enabled the actor to be filmed from all angles and aspects and looked very convincing. Again, this was more of a technical achievement than something like the makeup magic of a Jack Pierce or the like.
I hope that this film can be released in some future HDTV format along with a full and convincing 3D track. This is something I have read is well within the capability of certain modern LCD sets but will require the use of special glasses which block one of the stereo pairs while the other is permitted to be viewed, and so on. This will require a certain interest on the part of the public which currently appears to exist only in the gaming community.

(LOTR It's the best)
(YET ANOTHER PRECIOUS EDITION)
(Lord of the Rings)
(A perfect finish to the tale) This purchase was made as a gift for my older son. He (and all of us) have enjoyed the great extras on this dvd set as well as the production of the Lord of the Rings. As always, an easy transaction with quality products and shipping quickly to whatever address we need. Thasnk you so much. I've bought each of the Platinum Special Limited Edition Collectors Gift Sets for all my children (now grown), and, of course myself. I read Tolkien as a child, so did my children, but they read MY books. We're a LOTR family. The Lord Of The Rings story and people really come alive in these films. Peter Jackson has done us a real favor in giving the generations these films. The fellowship return one last time to strike the final blow against Sauron and end the war for Middle Earth.Like it's predecessors,Return of the King boasts spectacular acting and top-notch special effects. This edition features nearly an hour of new footage not seen in theatres, with each new moment adding to the story in a positive way.Like the extended editions of it's predecessors, there is a massive amount of bonus features spread out over two disks.Whether you're interested in the film's editing/stuntwork/scoring/design/construction or even production paintings and sketches, there's something here for you.Like James Cameron's directors cut of Aliens, the extended editions of these films are superior to all others and are the way these epic films were meant to be seen. Thanks for the movie, its my favorite of the trilogy and it was the only one I didn't have on extended edition. Having throughly enjoyed the theatrical release several years ago, I can say that I was even more pleased with this extended edition of The Return of the King. Once again Peter Jackson has lovingly crafted a cinematic experience faithful to Tolkien's masterpiece, and everyone involved deserves high praise for bringing The Lord of the Rings to cinematic life. I understand that, after many years of false rumors, Mr. Jackson is likely to shortly (2010?) bring The Hobbit to theaters. He has certainly earned the right to do so! WithThe Return of the King, the greatest fantasy epic in film history draws to a grand and glorious conclusion. Director Peter Jackson's awe-inspiring adaptation of the Tolkien classicThe Lord of the Ringscould never fully satisfy those who remain exclusively loyal to Tolkien's expansive literature, but as a showcase for physical and technical craftsmanship it is unsurpassed in pure scale and ambition, setting milestone after cinematic milestone as the brave yet charmingly innocent Hobbit Frodo (Elijah Wood) continues his mission to Mordor, where he is destined to destroy the soul-corrupting One Ring of Power in the molten lava of Mount Doom. While the heir to the kingdom of Men, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), endures the massive battle at Minas Tirith with the allegiance of the elf Legolas (Orlando Bloom), dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and the great wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Frodo and stalwart companion Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin) must survive the schizoid deceptions of Gollum, who remains utterly convincing as a hybrid of performance (by Andy Serkis) and subtly nuanced computer animation.Jackson and cowriters Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens have much ground to cover; that they do so with intense pacing and epic sweep is impressive enough, but by investing greater depth and consequence in the actions of fellow Hobbits Merry (Dominic Monaghan) and Pippin (Billy Boyd), they ensure thatReturn of the Kingmaintains the trilogy's emphasis on intimate fellowship. While several major characters appear only briefly, and one (Christopher Lee's evil wizard, Saruman) relegated entirely to the extended version on DVD, Jackson is to be commended for his editorial acumen; like Legolas the archer, his aim as a filmmaker is consistently true, and he remains faithful to Tolkien's overall vision. IfReturnsuffers from too many endings, as some critic suggested, it's only because the epic's conclusion is so loyally inclusive of the actors--most notably Astin--who gave it such strength to begin with. By ending theLOTRtrilogy with noble integrity and faith in the power of imaginative storytelling,The Return of the King, like its predecessors, will stand as an adventure for the ages.--Jeff Shannon The final battle for Middle-earth begins. Frodo and Sam, led by Gollum, continue their dangerous mission toward the fires of Mount Doom in order to destroy the One Ring. Aragorn struggles to fulfill his legacy as he leads his outnumbered followers against the growing power of the Dark Lord Sauron, so that the Ring-bearer may complete his quest. customer 's review ("The cellar stretched before me like some vast primeval plain...")
(One Of The More Memorable Of The '50s Sci-Fi Flicks)
(Excellent adaptation of a classic Richard Matheson story, sticks to the story unlike modern remakes of his books ie I am Legend)
(Unique)
(Not just another 'Sci-Fi' Film) THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN is a sci fi/horror flick that conforms to some film noir criteria: the protagonist is a victim of events beyond his control, plus much of the story unfolds in the shadows of a gloomy cellar.
The 1950s saw a proliferation of movies where atomic energy or radiation were integral to the story. In some of these, the planet's survival was at stake. In many, animals or humans were deformed or grew enormously when exposed to atomic radiation. "The Incredible Shrinking Man" was the first to take an opposite approach.
SYNOPSIS-- During a leisurely ocean vacation with his wife, Scott Carey (Williams) is engulfed by a mysterious mist and covered with a glittery substance that quickly evaporates while Louise (Stuart) is in the boat's galley.
Six months later, Scott is accidentally sprayed with insecticide. Soon after, he begins losing height and weight. The family physician, Dr. Bramson (Schallert) is baffled by this case. Scott is referred to specialist Dr. Silver (Bailey), who determines that radiation and poison have combined to make his body tissue, bones and organs shrink. Dr. Silver develops a serum that stops the shrinking but doesn't reverse the process.
This fix proves to be temporary-- Scott continues to get smaller. His story is publicized worldwide. When barely 3" tall, Scott takes to living in a doll house. While Louise is out, he's attacked by the family cat and nearly killed. Scott tumbles into the basement, lands in a boxful of discarded clothes. Louise and her brother-in-law Charlie (Langton) assume the worst: that the cat has eaten Scott. News of his death goes out to the media.
Scott's uninjured, but he's now trapped in the dark cellar. Shelter, food and water become paramount. Another concern is an enormous predatory spider. Worst of all: Scott continues to shrink!
Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 viewer poll rating found at a film resource website.
(7.7) The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) - Grant Williams/Randy Stuart/April Kent/Paul Langton/Raymond Bailey/William Schallert/Billy Curtis
TRIVIANA-- Sci-fi specialist Jack Arnold directed. He did the same for IT CAME FROM OUTER SPACE (1953), CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON (1954), THIS ISLAND EARTH (1955) and TARANTULA (1955).
UNIVERSAL scrapped a planned sequel in which Louise also shrinks.
Both doctors were portrayed by character actors best known for 1960s TV sitcoms (Schallert: THE PATTY DUKE SHOW and Bailey: THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES).
The cat who almost had Scott for dinner was Orangey. This feline starred in the baseball comedy RHUBARB (1951), and was "Cat" in BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S (1961).
Grant Williams (Scott), Randy Stuart (Louise) and Paul Langton (Charlie Carey) spent most of their careers guesting on dozens of TV series.
Billy Curtis (Midget) was Mayor of Munchkin City in THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939). Watching this again, now on DVD, brought back fond memories of when I watched this back in the last 1950s. This was a fascinating film for both me and my two brothers. It still is!
No, it didn't have the scary tone it once did, but one can't expect that. Seeing films as an adult is quite different from seeing them as a young child. Also, one can't expect the special-effects to be anywhere approaching today's caliber, but it's not bad in this old film and certainly top-notch for its day. Almost everyone agrees, this was tons better than most of the schlocky '50s sci-fi films.
****spoiler alert"""" Not only is it done pretty well but it's a good story and with a good ending. That ending is different, too, in that the man (Grant Williams, by the way, playing "Scott Carey") is not cured, but he doesn't die, either. He just accepts his condition with an interesting speech at the end.
It's dated and doesn't have the impact, of course, it did when it came out, but it's anything but a stupid movie and definitely worth seeing. Obviously any film is never going to be as good as your imagination when reading a really well written book but this movie comes pretty close. For those who don't know this is based on the classic tale The Shrinking Man by Richard Matheson. Incidentally if you add the word Incredible when looking for the book you will find an anthology collection with The Shrinking Man and other stories such as Duel in it.
A few things do date the movie a little such as the usual cheap sounding 50s thriller soundtrack and you can tell at times when there's a blue screen being used, but you rarely can. Whoever built the robot cat used in some scenes at the start of the film obviously didn't know the difference between cats and dogs as it wagged its tail canine style. You can understand why they had to make a cat when you see the really bad acting by the real cat in later scenes involving a dolls house (obviously shot first). This feline actor overuses Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!! a fair bit when a real life stalking prey cat is unlikely to do it even once. Haven't seen that cat in anything else so it obviously never got a call back for other films. The humans' acting though cannot be faulted.
For those who have read the book there are a few differences. The daughter from the book is not in the movie. The movie is set in chronological order as opposed to the book which has a lot of flashbacks and time wise starts in the basement with the encounter with the redback spider / black widow depending on where you're from, (it's a tarantula in the movie probably as they were scarier back then). In fact there's a lot less tension in the movie with the spider (and it's not missing a leg done by Scott when he was normal sized in the book) and his home in the basement didn't really look like it would keep out the spider but other than that, the massive props are really well done, you actually get the feeling he is that small. The movie still captures the what would you an average person do in this situation which is Matheson's specialty. It also captures Scott's mental breakdown but doesn't really touch on the what's the point of fighting to stay alive he often debated. In the book he also has worked out as he halves every certain number of days he will completely disappear in x amount, which again he uses to debate if he should just give up constantly in the book, however the movie makers didn't use this main book trait at all.
Basic plot of the film is after his boat floats through a strange mist, Scott Carey slowly begins to shrink. Doctors can't work out why and he soon becomes something to point at, a freak to ridicule, by the community. Life as he knows it is over, he feels more and more alienated the smaller he gets. As he gets smaller and smaller more things become dangerous to him. What would you do in this situation?
A few props aren't the right size (way too big) such as the salt and paper shakers, sugar shaker and coffee mug in the circus midget using them scenes. Other than that you can't really fault this film. A very well done film, I still rate it five stars even with the bad acting by the cat and other minor faults. Wish we could say this for the latest movie adaptation of Matheson's I am Legend. Another early film era movie done really well of a classic novel is The Invisible Man a good likeness to H G Wells' classic novel of the same name.
Done once. Now unrepeatable. I cannot imagine a remake of this movie which could be anything but worse. It's not a question of the special effects, the digitalization: it's a question of what is genuine and what isn't. I must have seen this incredible creation when it first came out. Perhaps I saw it again, perhaps 40 or so years ago. I can't remember. But I do remember almost all the film's details, which stayed vivid all those years until I watched it again just now. To me this means masterpiece. The concept is quite stunning, and the way it unfolds is masterly. On the face of it, how could a story which merely consists of a man getting smaller be any good? How can a story which has such a lot of voice-over narration make a good movie? Where is the plot? How could there be any suspense? What would be the twists? Somehow this incredibly simple idea works so well. It sinks into the sub-conscious. Totally incredible, yet incredibly real. Incredible. Although I don't normally assign a 'larger meaning' or social commentary to movies. (I prefer to see them as purely 'Escapist' entertainment) This is one of those times when it works on both levels. If you look at 'The Incredible Shrinking Man' as social commentary you see the world has changed in the post WWII days, it has become a very large, very scary place. Suddenly, the world is much bigger than your home, street, city or even your state. With mass transportation, the automobile, highways, air travel and television. Space flight is just around the corner. With the start of the 'Cold War' and the sudden threat of 'Nuclear Annihilation' people feel small, helpless and insignificant in the face of a world that has suddenly exploded into your 'Space' and can no longer be easily ignored or seen as somewhere far away. customer 's review (This is where irony comes in ...)
(This Movie is one of the worst Horror Movies ever made.) This horror cult favorite by camp master William Girdler should be avoided by anyone incapable of appreciating a film ironically. Yes, rubber snakes attack a blind woman. Yes, that is not scary. But it is funny. Actually, it's hi-freakin-larious.Lucina, a virginal -- or is she? -- concert pianist is forcibly committed to a"hospital"run by a cross dressing Satan worshipper whose patients range from a naive blind woman to despondent wheelchair-bound druids. Lucina's mutton-chopped, plaid-pantsed boyfriend, Chris, tries to save her as a bam-chicka-bamp-bamp porn soundtrack plays in the background. I won't ruin the ending. Let's just say that the Dark Prince makes an appearance and he's looking for some hot hot Satan-on-virgin action. Awww yeaaah! Summary: If you heart irony and laughing at others, you will like this movie. If you think that a low-budget movie with poster art resembling a Spinal Tap album cover could possibly be scary, you will be angry. The Exorcist is scary. Asylum of Satan is not. Out of all the horror movies I have Seen and I've seen many Horror movies this has to be the worst I have ever seen. The special effects in it are so bad that it is sickning. At one part in the movie this doctor puts a blind person in a swiming pool and these rubber snakes come over with plastic teeth and kill her, you can see the strings pulling the snakes over to the girl. At another point in the movie this one girl who is on a wheelchair gets pushed in a room and gets locked in their and then you see all of these little plastic spiders and other things that are attached to a string get pulled over her and then she dies. So what I am basically saying is that this movie has horrible special effects and really bad acting, so whatever you do, don't bother watching this movie.

customer 's review (The Lord of the Rings -- extended)
As the remains of the Fellowship prepare for battle, Frodo and Sam, with Gollem in tow, make their way to Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring. Genre:Feature Film-Action/Adventure Rating:PG13 Release Date:17-JAN-2006 Media Type:DVD The greatest trilogy in film history, presented in the most ambitious sets in DVD history, comes to a grand conclusion with the extended edition ofThe Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Not only is the third and final installment of Peter Jackson's adaptation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien the longest of the three, but a full 50 minutes of new material pushes the running time to a whopping 4 hours and 10 minutes. The new scenes are welcome, and the bonus features maintain the high bar set by the first two films,The Fellowship of the RingandThe Two Towers. What's New?
One of the scenes cut from the theatrical release but included here, the resolution of the Saruman storyline, generated a lot of publicity when the movie opened, as actor Christopher Lee complained in the press about losing his only appearance. It's an excellent scene, one Jackson calls "pure Tolkien," and provides better context for Pippin to find the wizard's palantir in the water, but it's not critical to the film. In fact, "valuable but not critical" might sum up theROTKextended edition. It's evident that Jackson made the right cuts for the theatrical run, but the extra material provides depth and ties up a number of loose ends, and for those sorry to see the trilogy end (and who isn't?) it's a welcome chance to spend another hour in Middle-earth. Some choice moments are Gandalf's (Ian McKellen) confrontation with the Witch King (we find out what happened to the wizard's staff), the chilling Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor, and Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) being mistaken for Orc soldiers. We get to see more ofÉowyn (Miranda Otto), both with Aragorn and on the battlefield, even fighting the hideously deformed Orc lieutenant, Gothmog. We also see her in one of the most anticipated new scenes, the Houses of Healing after the battle of the Pelennor Fields. It doesn't present Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) as asavior as the book did, but it shows the initial meeting between Éowyn and Faramir (David Wenham), a relationship that received only a meaningful glance in the theatrical cut. If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.
| And for those who complained, no, there are no new endings, not even the scouring of the Shire, which many fans were hoping to see. Nor is there a scene of Denethor (John Noble) with the palantir, which would have better explained both his foresight and his madness. As Jackson notes, when cuts are made, the secondary characters are the first to go, so there is a new scene of Aragorn finding the palantir in Denethor's robes. Another big difference is Aragorn's confrontation with the King of the Dead. In the theatrical version, we didn't know whether the King had accepted Aragorn's offer when the pirate ships pulled into the harbor; here Jackson assumes that viewers have already experienced that tension, and instead has the army of the dead join the battle in an earlier scene (an extended cameo for Jackson). One can debate which is more effective, but that's why the film is available in both versions. If you feel like watching the relatively shorter version you saw in the theaters, you can. If you want to completely immerse yourself in Peter Jackson's marvelous and massive achievement, only the extended edition will do.How Are the Bonus Features?
To complete the experience,The Return of the Kingprovides the same sprawling set of features as the previous extended editions: four commentary tracks, sharp picture and thrilling sound, and two discs of excellent documentary material far superior to the recycled material in the theatrical edition. Those who have listened to the seven hours of commentary for the first two extended editions may wonder if they need to hear more, but there was no commentary for the earlierROTKDVD, so it's still entertaining to hear Jackson break down the film (he says the beacon scene is one of his favorites), discuss differences from the book, point out cameos, and poke fun at himself and the extended-edition concept ("So this is the complete full strangulation, never seen before, here exclusively on DVD!"). The documentaries (some lasting 30 minutes or longer) are of their usual outstanding quality, and there's a riveting storyboard/animatic sequence of the climactic scene, which includes a one-on-one battle between Aragorn and Sauron. One DVD Set to Rule Them All Peter Jackson's trilogy has set the standard for fantasy films by adapting the Holy Grail of fantasy stories with a combination of fidelity to the original source and his own vision, supplemented by outstanding writing, near-perfect casting, glorious special effects, and evocative New Zealand locales. The extended editions without exception have set the standard for the DVD medium by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features.--David Horiuchi Rerations < The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) >

(Simply Brilliant!)
(Good premise, disappointing plot)
(Re-Pwn!)
(dark musicals need work) This is a stunningly unsettling and dark masterpiece! The music can't really compare to anything else. Anthony Stewart Head, Alexa Vega, and Sarah Brightman lend their powerful and intoxicating voices with extraordinary lyrics and eerie background sound. The scenery gives you a feeling that you have stepped into a surrealistic otherworld. The make-up and clothing would make Hot Topic proud. I'd call it all beautiful, but that really isn't the right word for this gory film . . . There just really aren't words. Just watch and you'll see what I mean. Of all the movies to come out in 2007-2008, this one is probably the best. If it had been given a proper release, than it would have certainly out sold The Dark Knight with it's catchy tunes, mesmerizing visuals and traditional Italian opera storyline. It has an all star cast that fit the characters perfectly (even though Paris Hilton won the Razzy for her Amber Performance, that's only because she did little acting as a spoiled princess). The music is a mix of traditional opera and modern alternative rock twisted with Goth/2nd Generation Industrial elements. A must buy for anyone, especially as a gift to those young morons that believe that Twilight is Goth. I loved most of the songs, the style of the city and the costumes of the more outrageous characters. The setting and the main premise are wonderful, the idea is brilliant and world is a dark, industrial delight.
I hated the plot, which was predictably comfortable at best, banal at worst, and the characterisation, which was painfully 2D and made it hard to enjoy and empathise with Nate, Shilo, and the Largo family, who were an otherwise interesting cast.
But in the end, I've watched it over 10 times since it arrived, and will watch it some more, because despite it's flaws it's a fun -very, very bloody- musical, and there's something irresistible about Repo! that I can watch over and over. I bought this movie on a whim and I'm so glad I did. The cleverly scripted graverobber sets the plot with a very catchy opening song in this goth&gore-filled musical. All preformers did a wonderful job; I especially enjoyed watching the Repo Man sing as he "operates" on his patients. The story moves along with no boring parts. There is this one song, very teeny-bopper wannabe rock-ish that threw off the tone of the movie, but I think it was meant to piss you off because the little ingrate singing it gets shown their place. I had hoped for a bit more killing, but it's ok because the bloody scenes were executed with power and brilliance! If you're deciding between DVD or Blu-ray, go with Blu-ray, the price difference is small and the jump in quality is worth it for this movie. The imagery and ambiance was wonderful but the music left me disappointed. With so many great musicians all in one film, I guess I expected more, but they still don't seem to know how to make "dark" musicals sound good rather than cheesy. REPO THE GENETIC OPERA WS (DVD MOVIE) LikeningRepo! The Genetic Operato its predecessors,Little Shop of HorrorsandRocky Horror Picture Show, conveys this film’s high camp and operatic bursts of song, but does little to describe how absolutely bizarreRepo!is. LikeRocky Horror, Repo!was written for stage performance by Darren Smith and Terrance Zdunich, who stars as a Graverobber, dolled up in vampiric makeup to resembleRocky Horror’siconic tranny, Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Hiring newbie director, Darren Lynn Bousman, fresh out of film school to shoot this mutant movie, Smith and Zdunich clearly focused on writing comedy into extremely gruesome slasher scenes, which works with mixed results. Stills of comic strips contextualize each scene, telling the story of biotech corporation Geneco’s repossessions of organs that they implanted into various patients to save human lives during a long history of operations. Organs, here, were bought on credit, and as the economy nosedives, citizens of this a makeshift Gotham City cannot pay bills, and must forfeit their lives to repo men make a killing around town, literally. Heading this enterprise is CEO Rotti Largo (Paul Sorvino), who has two bickering sons, Luigi (Bill Moseley) and Pavi (Nivek Ogre), whose white facemask is third generation Phantom, borrowing directly from Winslow Leach’s in Brian De Palma’sPhantom of the Paradise. Central to the plot is head repo guy/slaughterer, Nathan Wallace (Anthony Head ofBuffy the Vampire Slayer), who hides his career path to preserve his sexy teenage daughter, Shilo’s (Alexa Vega), innocence. As Shilo discovers her godmom, Blind Mag (Sarah Brightman), and the "Z"-addicted surgery slut, Amber Sweet (Paris Hilton), she embarks on adventures through an urban landscape constructed of metal gear, corpse piles, and S/M zombie girls, while dad straps people up in his torture chamber to take back body parts. Hmmmm. SinceRepo!looks likes a Marilyn Manson video, its musical niche sensibility will only appeal to fans who like Goth and Industrial music. To anyone who doesn’t go for that look, it does impress for its sheer dedication to choreography and song. In the least,Repo! The Genetic Operais an anomalous glimpse into visionary horror. --Trinie Dalton Rerations < Repo! The Genetic Opera >

(MAYHEM, MONSTERS, ROMANCE, AND TONS OF ACTION)
(Fun, Beautiful Film)
(Underworld) Fresh, original, a movie worth watching over and over. Underworld is a gothic and beautiful film with great acting and a fairly good script. This is the film that started it all, and perhaps should have ended it all. I initially saw this movie on TV, and decided I wanted to buy it. Also bought the sequels... I normally don't like scary movies, but this was more like an action, suspense, romeo and juliet love story. This is one of my favorite vampire flicks of recent years. Retooling the lore of the vampire, and lycanthropy doesn't bother me a bit ( since virtually everyone after Bram Stoker has ). The cinematography, sets, and costumes are really wonderful in this action-packed horror story ( as is true of the sequel, and 'prequel' ). Kate Beckinsale, besides being lovely to look at, carries off her role as a 'death-dealer,' that falls for a doctor ( played adequately by Scott Speedman ) hunted by Lycans, admirably. Bill Nighy is also excellent as the leader of the vampire clan Beckinsale's character belongs to. Like the story or not there is no denying that this is a beautiful film to look. The overtones and the cinematography make watching the film like looking at gothic art. Kate Beckinsale is great in this movie. If you're into Werewolves and Vampires, you have to check this one out. This is a great movie. Vampire movies are really hot now. Great quality movie. I recommend it. Movie DVD BlademeetsThe CrowandThe MatrixinUnderworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires. It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda. Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments ofGodzilla,Men in Black, andIndependence Day. His work is all surface, no substance, filled with derivative, grand-scale action as conflicted vampire Selene (Kate Beckinsale, who later became engaged to Wiseman) struggles to rescue an ill-fated human (Scott Speedman) from Lycan transformation. It's great looking all the way, and a guaranteed treat for horror buffs, who will eagerly dissect its many strengths and weaknesses.--Jeff Shannon Rerations < Underworld (Widescreen Special Edition) >

(A little long)
(enough already)
(Say it isn't so....and yet it really is.)
(Read This Before Purchasing Book!) This book is jumbled, ridiculous, incomprehensible, and just plain disappointing. It's a SCI-FI book that uses anime as a reference.
The last book of the series left off with Elena naked and human. In this book L.J. Smith decided that didn't work with her plot so she made Elena not able to speak with a child-like mind that is "pure". To "know a person" new Elena must kiss a person so she can "recognize them" (like a prairie dog). Who wouldn't like to be compared to a rodent? Elena is no longer the girl we knew, she is now SAINT Elena, with Sailor Moonish powers and wings (trust me you don't want to know). The only characters that are even similar to what they used to be are Matt and Bonnie. Caroline is now the main villain, who is being controlled by devious, incestous, and sadistic Japanese twins. Caroline will stop at nothing to get back at Elena's clique. Stefan is kidnapped for most of the book and Damon is just a sleazy, disgusting, moral less jerk. (I believe someone previously put frat boy in their reviews and that was pretty accurate).
There is an evil in Fell's Church, Virginia that is causing tween girls to act promiscous. These girls even try to have sex with every male around (including their own fathers and brothers). There are also giant insects that look like jellyfish with large mouths that are trying to possess people. These possessed people act crazy and hurt themselves (like I need to read about self-mutilation and destruction.)
This book is disappointing mainly due to bad character and plot execution. These characters are not the same characters from the previous books even though it is only a week later. Caroline is one of the villians and does a 180 from the character that seemed to start redeeming herself at the end of the last book. The other villians are the kitsune twins who can control dimensions. Evil Japanese twins that are incestuous, sadistic, and absolutely ridiculous (cartoonish is accurate).
And how does Japanese mythology and Fell's Church, Virginia go together? How does anyone think this plot is not absolutely insane? The previous Vampire Diary books at least had character and plot development. These characters have devolved into flat one dimensional and unbelievable characters.
Did L.J. Smith really need to make the vampires not able to have sex and let us know that Stefan went as far as a vampire could go with Caroline? Or that Bonnie's a maiden and Elena was far from pure? Or how about that Damon is actually scared of Meredith? Come on, this book is absolute drivel.
Let me state that I am an L.J. Smith fan who has been reading her for years, but this book was so bad I wanted to throw it out. If I wanted a SCI-FI book I would have bought one. I loved the previous Vampire Diaries books.
And so this book just gets more unbelievable and ridiculous with each page. It was pure torture reading it. If I wanted gratuitous violence and disgusting behavior I could watch a SAW movie...
I too wished I had never read it because I feel it tarnishes the other books. My favorite series is the Night World and this was my second favorite. These were the books that got me to read L.J. Smith's books. So please, Ms. Smith re-read your books and use the same writing style. Your writing style and characterization is what made me want to read (and re-read) your books. I am sure others were drawn to this as well, please do not disappoint your loyal fan base with poorly executed books.
First of all, The Vampire Diaries were never my favorite (I'm more of a Secret Circle/Forbidden Games girl) but I still liked them back in the day. With this in mind, I give it a mixed review. It took nearly half the book to get my attention. I found it a little long and overly drawn out in the beginning half. However, I did like the antagonists and the tension between characters later on. It just could have been condensed. I will tune to the CW and see how the series pans out on TV. I'll still read anything LJ Smith writes, especially after being a fan for over 15 yrs.
I bought this book because I really liked the others, although I was a little curious about how LJ smith would manage to continue a story that had, in my mind, reached a fitting and fairly satisfying conclusion. Answer: badly. Very badly.
It really does seem as if Ms. Smith just felt like writing a vampire-ish story and decided to stick in her old characters to save the trouble of creating new ones. However, these characters have not developed; in fact, it's almost as if they have regressed. Elena and Caroline are prime examples. In earlier books, Caroline seemed to have developed to a point where she was almost one of the good guys and, while flawed, definitely had potential. Now, however, all of that development is gone and she is just an empty character and "vessel," which made me scratch my head a bit and wonder if anyone in these books actually has the ability to change. As for Elena...again, it as if Elena has regressed to the character that she was in the first book, except that now she has wings and super-blood. And given that she is the heroine of these books and was the one with the most nuanced character, such a regression is annoying and ridiculous. She had reached a point where she was balanced and fully developed, and now we're suddenly back to vampire-or-human, Damon-or-Stefan all over again. And speaking of Damon, his character also seems to have gone backward. At the end of the previous books, I felt like he had reconciled the different sides of himself and would be okay. In this book, though, he's a bad boy without actually having any of the interesting aspects of one.
And all of that is not to mention the fact that, at about 580 pages, this book never actually gets to the point. There are many action sequences, a ton of lose plot threads, and certainly enough stuff going on to fill a story. But the book kind of stops during the rising action. Obviously it is one of a trilogy, so some loose ends can be expected. But it's as if Smith just packed in minor conflicts and minor battles gratuitously. They don't actually add to the story and there's no sense that they're leading up to anything; it's just blah-blah risking-their-lives-yet-again-I-wonder-if-they'll-make-it-yeah-right. The only diversion was the occasional featuring of some freaky trees.
As other reviewers have said, there are one or two good moments. I like those featuring Stefan, of whom there is not enough in this book, and there is one good Damon-Elena moment. But in general, I don't know what the hell is going on with this book; I hope LJ Smith does so that she can fix it in future books. Based on this, however, I doubt that I will buy the next two in this trilogy. For me, the story of Elena, Damon, Stefan, etc. ended already. It had closure and, dare I say, poignancy. It is apparent here that trying to revive it is just corrupting a good thing. This is going to be a really quick review folks. This book has neither the feel nor the flare of the L.J Smith I've known and loved. I will not be going any furhter with these books though I plan to watch the series airing on the CW this fall. It saddens me to say this but I skipped the majority of this book, read only the parts involving Bonnie and Damon became quickly bored by the brother's obsession with a girl who seemed, at least in this book, so one dimensional I wanted to reach in and smack her senseless. Really can't recommend reading this but if you must don't buy new. Okay, I bought this book three days ago and have just finished reading it. There's a lot I feel I need to say to defend why this book was amazing because it's apparent people feel like bashing the book. . .Why? Apparently it's too difficult a read for them.
First off the major thing that bothered me was people saying her eyes color suddenly changes in this book like that their is specks of gold and one time it says violet. If you've ever looked up lapis lazuli then you would know that it has gold flecks in it. Therefore, her description is correct. And, yes, sometimes in certain lights eyes can look violet. What's the problem?
I found this book fairly easy to read and I'm only 19! Yes, I read a lot of books and I know the difference between good books and bad ones. And this one, to simply put it, was amazing.
First, we start off with Elena, who is back from the spirit world and is slowly getting accustomed to the real world again, which is why she can't talk at first. But, she is able to communicate with Stefan through each others minds. Stefan ends up leaving, which is what this whole book is based on. The first steps of finding out how to get to where he is and stopping Shinochi and Misao. Personally, I love the two villians in the story, they are original and very creepy, as to be expected of L.J.Smith's work.
Now, this is what I feel needs explanation from what the one star reviews have said:
First: Someone said Damon is shallow and only cares that Bonnie is an A cup.
Where in the world did this person pull this out of? First off, Damon is possessed in this book by the very beginning and he doesn't come across as shallow at all. Evil, of course. But, I guess people can't differentiate the two. Now, about the whole A Cup thing. He was stripping Bonnie to save her life! She was dying and he had to put her in a bath to let the venom seep out of her body and yes there was a little comment in his moment about how he couldn't help, but notice she was only an A cup. is it that big a deal people?
Second: This book only consists of Damon weeping at Elena's feet and beginning for forgiveness.
Another strong statement with nothing to back it up. Damon is possessed and when Elena uses her powers to heal him and take the malach Damon becomes upset and begs for forgiveness. Of course he would beg for forgiveness he made Matt and her do horrible things in the woods in front of him for his amusement. So, yes, he does beg for forgiveness because he loves Elena and hated himself for actually psychically hurting her.
Third: The kitsune twins are only around to say their is a villian and cause a little chaos.
Again, did some of you actually read the book? The ENTIRE time Misao is possessing poor little girls with malachs making them do ungodly things, while Shinichi focuses on Damon and Elena, the only possible threats in town. Malachs are what's infecting the residents of Fell's church under Misao's orders to destroy the town. And, someone said after comment that there was trees and insects that "that's all i'm going to say about those." Wow. You are providing an excellent review! People just state the weird occurrances in the book as if they are random, but it all builds up the story for an explosive cliff hanger in their fight to find Stefan. Honestly, if you give this story a chance it's a great story. Yes, their is magic key, which is to be expected of magical japenese kitsunes! It's only towards the end and definitely takes you for an interesting ride when Elena is trying to run for her life from Damon. That chapter was so creative it had me on the edge of my seat! I found myself saying run faster Elena!
Fourth: The statements that Elena is suddenly a Mary Sue. Totally false! She has undergone a lot of character developement. She was brought back from the dead so yes, of course, at first some of her spirit being still resides in her human body and it takes about a hundred pages for her to settling into her old self. While Elena's on the back burner recovering we get to watch Damon slowly lose control of his body and fight with this new feelings for Bonnie. She's not perfect and once she settles back into her human body and talks again the author proves this to us by using swears and such to show the old wildfire Elena, while at other times she used to run into things headfirst without asking questions she is now more patient like a real human being would be.
Okay, so the wings of redemption, purification, etc. are a weird names. It's hard coming up with names for angel-like abilities! And, I can't explain too much without ruining the book, but by the ending it's evident that Elena is no perfect, Mary Sue, character.
Read it and form your own opinion! This book is worth the ride it takes you on, I assure you! And, personally, I can't wait to read the next installment Shadow of Souls because that ending. . .Let's just say I was ready to scream at a possible twist she threw in there!
The first book in a new trilogy from L. J. Smith! Elena Gilbert is alive—again.
When Elena sacrificed herself to save the two vampire brothers who love her—the handsome, brooding Stefan and the sleek and dangerous Damon—she was consigned to a fate beyond death. Until a powerful supernatural force pulled her back. Now Elena is notjusthuman. She has powers and gifts that were bestowed on her in the afterlife. What's more, her blood pulses with an overwhelming and unique force that makes her irresistible to any vampire. Stefan wants to find a way to keep Elena safe so that they can make a life together. Damon, however, is driven by an insatiable desire for power, and wants Elena to rule as his princess. When Stefan is lured away from Fell's Church, Damon seizes his chance to convince her that he is the brother she is meant to be with. . . . But a darkness is infiltrating the town, and Damon, always the hunter, is now the hunted; he becomes the prey of a malevolent creature that can possess him at will, and who desires not just Elena's blood but her death. (awesome book!)
(Creepy, thought provoking)
(okay, but . . .) i'd highly recommend this to any fiction lover out there. my only complaint is that i found it a tad too short, but you know what they say about quantity and quality. great job Konrath. Sometimes you get what you pay for when getting something cheap. Not this time. This was an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone looking for a "page turner". Plus it was cheap. I just kind of suffered through a lincoln/childs book. Not sure what the problem was as I usually like books from these guys. It was unneccasarily long for one thing. I read a heather graham book that was so terrible I could not finish it. It was left at work, that's why I started reading it. I was starting to blame my new kindle.
Then I read origin!!! What an awesome story! I kept thinking to myself as I read it that it would make an equally awesome movie! It moved along at just the right pace too. The imagery was very good, I could almost smell the monster! I could feel the fear! I was amazed when I got to the end of the book that it was rejected several times for publication!! It makes no sense?!?!
Loved this story. Just the right amount of sci-fi and horror mixed. I could envision this story as I read it. Many good points about life and religion mixed in. It's a fun novella, but not well written. However, I appreciated the story. I think the author would benefit from a bit more research (graduates of West Point, for example, do not go into the field as Sgt. Majors). Also, the plotting was predictable and a bit redundant. Okay for an afternoon read when there is nothing else more pressing. For a limited time only $1.89.
Thriller writer J.A. Konrath, author of the Lt. Jack Daniels series, digs into the vaults and unearths a technohorror tale from the depths of hell...

(Great Zombie Book)
(Mediocre vehicle for right-wing ideals)
(Surprisingly Enjoyable)
(Zombielicious) This is the best of the best!!! DBDA is a masterpice in the Zombie Post-Apocalyptic world. The excitment and horror is very intence and almost endless. This is done in a diff style so be ready. I can't say enough to buy this book!!!!! This was a great zombie book, and great book altogether. a real page turner from beginning to end. I don't know how some people could give this booka 1-star (or anything lower than 4). I am looking forward for the second book. I wanted desperately to like this book - the concept, though by no means original, was far from standard zombie fare. Bourne manages to present new and tantalizing situations for zombie apocolypse survivors to brave, and presents them in a manner which almost lends itself to excitement.
But the style of writing is repetitive, and difficult to take seriously. I fully understand what he was going for - a novel written in journal format from the "everyman"s point of view, but he misses the mark with choppy writing and pretentious culture references. And to top it off, he chose to end the book at literally, the most interesting part.
Throughout the novel, he managers references things like "FOX news" and "good conservative values", which truly have no place in a book targeting people from all walks of life/backgrounds. Evidence for this political ideology is also revealed by his never addressing an obviously sexual relationship with another female survivor. Something he in fact, clearly avoids even sparing more than a few lines for. Exploding zombie heads and people being torn limb from limb is a-ok, but talking about sex?! That's clearly the devil's playground.
When the characters in his novel stopped being believable, along with the situations they found themselves in, the book died.
This author would perhaps also have far more success writing in a format other than first person. **Depending on your definition of "spoilers" there may be some in here**
Basic Plot: Unnamed Naval Officer is keeping a journal as the zombies rise and all is going to hell. He barricades himself in his house, stockpiles his weapons, food, water, etc and tries to wait out the zombie plague. Eventually he makes contact with a neighbor who is still alive and because of circumstances that I won't give away they go on the run together, dodging zombies and trying to survive.
I'd heard a lot of hype about Day by Day Armageddon but I was reluctant to try it out for a few reasons.
Firstly I am not a fan of reading journals or memoirs and while I realize this was a work of fiction I just didn't think the format would appeal to me or would "work" given the subject matter.
Secondly, the cover design makes it look like a very amateurish piece of work and granted one should never judge a book by its cover and the author IS an amateur I just felt like even an amateur could have found something better.
Thirdly, all these things combined made me go "ehhhh." Finally, of course, I broke down and bought it because decent Zombie books are hard to come by and I figured I'd give it a shot due to a lot of the hype it was generating.
I was as much right as I was wrong and it was surprsingly enjoyable. The journal format limited some character development seeing as the story is written entirely with one voice and from one perspective. To the author's credit he does not make the journal as realistic as possible and pushes the boundaries a bit to offer some more character development and detail beyond what a normal journal would have. But as much as the format limited a traditional storytelling experience it also offered a unique perspective and voice for the subject matter. While I wish I could "hear" some of the other characters speak it was interesting to hear a story told through a narration by a single survivor with details here and there from others although all told secondhand by our narrator. That being said, obviously there is no dialogue to speak of beyond a sentance like: I said to John that we should do x, y, and z and he agreed.
The story itself was not extremely unique for the genre but it did not follow the "let's barricade ourselves here for the whole story and wait until the zombies get in" plotline OR the "my father/son/wife/daughter/pet hamster is six states over and I need to go rescue them" plotline. Both of which comprise about 98% of Zombie stories. Although in all fairness the first 1/3 of the book is essentially the first one but our narrator willingly leaves his barricaded home and there are several locations/scenes after that as he and another survivor(s) are on the run. There is not a whole lot of "plot" to the story other than survival until near the end when our survivor(s)find themselves "somewhere" and realize they may not be the only people still living in the area. I don't want to give too much away.
The "ending," however, comes very quickly and surprisingly with little resolution other than the "what lies ahead for our hero? No one knows" type of B movie ending. There are plans for a sequel which to my knowledge is currently being written. The version of DBDA that I bought had a preview from that book and it appears that the sequel may not continue the story from the first one. Also it seems (and granted this is only from a few pages) that the author is writing in a more traditional, non-journal format although there still wasn't any dialogue to be seen. It's hard to say if any of this is the case, though, and in the afterward the author does say "rest assured that you will hear more from our survivor" so I guess we'll meet up with him at some point in the next book.
The book is also not very long. It's just under 200 pages not including the foreward, afterward, excerpt from the sequel, and a few pictures toward the end of the book. Also the journal format messes with the length a bit, there's some pictures, drawings, and the book is a fairly large one compared to a normal paperback. It's not the fastest read in the world but it shouldn't take an interested reader more than a few hours if they're motivated enough. I read the whole thing in about six hours, roughly a week of reading an hour or so a night.
Despite being a quick read in an odd format I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed the book as much as I did. The main character was interesting enough to follow, and his military knowledge (due to the author being in the military) made him that much more realistic and credible. While the plot wasn't the most unique one out there for the genre it differed enough in the feel, actions, and motivations of our character to be refreshing enough to enjoy without groaning and saying "this has been done so many times before." Some of the situations were likewise unique and "new enough" given the format to be enjoyed if only from a different point of view.
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars for a few reasons. First off is the length. For the price a lot of these small publishing house books go for it's not very lengthy. Not enough bang for the buck. Secondly while the format offered new and interesting perspectives and a different feel from other Zombie books it's still a limiting format with no dialogue and minimal character development (of the other characters). Thirdly the format also negates the posibility for other character's internal monologue or for other scenes and storylines that do not include the main character.
This book ranks up there with some of the better first-time authored Zombie books and this version is one of Permuted Press' better offerings. There are some spelling and grammatical mistakes to be had (like all PP works, groan) but honestly I think you can overlook that because it's supposed to be a journal written by a man more or less on the run. In that case the mistakes can actually make it seem more realistic.
I reccomend this to zombie fans, post-apocalyptic fans, and survival horror fans. It's not the best Zombie work out there but it's among the top in small house publications and as far as first-time authors go, a pretty good piece of work. I am a huge fan of Zombie fiction and was not disappointed by this novel. However I am biased and I do agree with other reviewers that sticking to the traditional Romero zombie makes a better novel. I have read novels where zombies drive and talk, to me that completely belongs in another genre. This novel is written in journal format and although there a few typos here and there they might be stylistic. It has a fair amount of action and although many reviewers have complained that the protagonist is over prepared, well if he wasn't there really wouldn't be a survival journal would there? I don't want to spoil the story but if you like World War Z you will enjoy this novel, but it definitely does not have the same political agenda or commentaries on society. It is a pure survivalist tale, a little reminiscent of The Road but with zombies and not cannibals. START INTERCEPT_ Sporadic news reports indicate chaos and violence spreading through U.S. cities. An unknown evil is sweeping the planet. The dead are rising to claim the Earth as the new dominant species in the food chain. INTERCEPT COMPLETE_ Survivor, In your hands is the handwritten journal depicting one man's struggle for survival. (Awesome)
(The Most Violent Game of All Time is on the Wii?!)
(fun but a little to short)
(Tooo Hillarious!) Mad World has a unique art type but it works. It's very visceral and definitely not for children of any age. If you own a Wii and are 18 or older you owe it to yourself to own this game. The game is awesome. Excellent 1 player, stage to stage's game. The different stages it provide shows the game were design in a very unique and creative way. Disadvantage is that it is not as fun if it is for 2 players. However, be prepared for the bloody scene the game can give. And most importantly, it is only black and white. Just in case you wonder why the images and the cover of the game is black and white. The only thing in color is the RED blood...
Children must be taught about the violence of the game. In the drought of traditional games for the Wii, Mad World is like a blood drenched, gore splattered oasis in the middle of a family friendly desert of party games.
Concept: 9/10 This game looks like it was inspired by Marv from Sin City. Somebody said, "Hey, let's take Marv, call him Jack, put him in an Escape from New York setting, and have him participate in an ultra-violent game show." The game is broken up into 14 Arena Style Levels where you must score points by violently murdering other contestants. There are Arena Levels, Driving Levels, and Boss Fights. Jack gets 30 minutes and 2 Continues at the beginning of each level. The gameplay takes full advantage of the Wii Controller as you creatively find ways to eliminate your competition. When you score enough points, you gain access to a Boss Battle. After you defeat the Boss, you can progress to the next level.
Story: 8/10 In an area like Manhattan, a Government Agency sprayed the population with some sort of Steroidal Rage Drug and encouraged mass murder. Over time, the city became full of death traps and weapons. Our hero, Jack an ex-Champion of the games, is sent into the city to find out who's behind it all. There's actually more story than there needs to be, but it's all well done.
Graphics: 6/10 What's Black and White and Red All Over? This game. The basic art style is black and white like the Sin City graphic novels. There's also plenty of blood to highlight the violence. The character and level designs are outstanding, but the Black and White art makes it a bit hard to focus and tends to strain your eyes after an hour. In the end, if doesn't matter how stylized your graphics are if they cause eye strain.
Gameplay: 8/10 Killing goons has never been so violent. In a normal game, you might kill a guy by stabbing him or throwing him into a fire, but that's just so pedestrian for Mad World. In Mad World, you score points by inflicting as much lethal damage on an enemy as you can. For example: First, you might beat a guy up, then slam a tire over his head, pinning his arms to his body. Then grab a street sign, rip it out of the ground and jam it through his face. Then, pick him up, head butt him a few times for good measure and walk over to a meat hook. Slam the guy onto the meat hook, over and over and over again by thrashing your Wiimote. That will get you the score of HARDCORE VIOLENCE. You've never been able to inflict more damage on a human body before this game... EVER! The more points you score, the more death traps and weapons appear in the level. After a while, the levels play out almost like Tony Hawk where you strategically maximize the death traps and enemies to score as many points as you can. Optional Mini-Games are also available such as Man Darts, or Decapitation Golf to allow you to score even more points. The gameplay is really fun, but starts to feel repetitive after about an hour.
Sound: 5/10 The music tracks are a mix of rap and action music. They're ok. The cutscenes are very well written and acted. However, there are two announcers that punctuate the violence as you are playing the game. Their perverse jokes get really repetitive after a while and they start to get annoying. You can turn the Volume down independently for the Announcers, Sound Effects, or Music.
Replay Value: 7/10 At any time, you can replay levels to try and improve your High Score. There is also a Multi-Player mode where Two Players can compete head to head in the Mini Games.
Overall: 8/10 This game is fun in small doses. Brutally killing guys with the Wiimote as you're trying to discover new and creative ways to kill them is very fun. You can probably finish the game in about 6 to 8 hours.
Mad World is Rated M for Language, Crude Humor, Porn Jokes, Violence, Gore, Murder, Dismembering, Impaling, Immolating, Vaporizing, Smashing, Bashing, Chopping, Slicing, Dicing, Chain-sawing, Pulverizing, Burning, Stabbing, Thrashing, Mutilating, Catapulting, Disemboweling and the list goes on... and on...
Buy it if: You want to own the most Adult Game of all time. You want more traditional games for your Wii Collection. You want to play the mini-games in Multiplayer.
Rent it if: You want a violently fun arcade style beat 'em up. You want a short, but fun action game for the Wii.
Avoid it if: You don't like violence, crude humor, or black and white art.
If you like this game, you'll love No More Heroes for the Wii.
any hardcore wii gamer needs this in there game list but please note this game is a little bit short about 5-8 hours short but still a great game As a 35-year old woman, who mostly uses her Wii for workouts and socail games, I was skeptical when a friend gave me Mad World for my birthday. But, I have to admit, this game rocks! I'm a girly-girl for the most part, but I enjoy a good adventure, and this game certainly delivers. If you're turned off by blood or violence, then this is not the game for you. I thought it might be a bit too rough for me (the course language and sexual referenaces by the sportscasters) but they way its done is so funny, those things are soon overlooked (by me at least).

(The Lost Crown) As usual I read the other reviews of anything I review-and as usual I was amazed at the variety of reactions. But the gamut of emotions involved among any group of interviewers is usually pretty wide, covering everything from bliss to boredom to even outrage. "The Lost Crown" is no exception. But the Crown is a fine performance, mainly because of the superb black and white graphics with splashes of eerie color, and an intriguing plot and a lusciously creepy atmosphere. There are so many sensitive little touches, such as a dragonfly hovering or dandelion seeds blowing in the wind. There is constantly something to look at and observe. You can't just sit there and click: you have to peer around all the time or you'll miss something vital and if you miss a vital "trigger" you cannot proceed.
I agree with others that Nigel is a bit clunky and slow-moving but I like him. In this game I move along as ponderously as he does as I like to immerse myself in the plot, imbibe the atmosphere, and smell the roses- slowly. "The Lost Crown" is a very long, complicated game and while not exactly scary it is creepy enough to titillate and interesting enough to keep you hanging in there.
"Crown" is a class act. But prepare to spend a lot of time in Saxton among the reeds and the dank caverns and the sullen ocean waves. You'll meet the often strange local characters and eerie ghosts, commingled in a rich, atmospheric stew. Highly recommended.
It's a treasure hunting adventure with ghosts - or whatever they are - helping (and hindering) your progress. Some of the ghosts have nothing to do with the hunt - they just add interest to the story.
The look of the game is how I imagine dogs see the world. Sharply defined shades of gray with occasional splashes of color. The blue sky on May Day was quite a shocker. I remember staring at it like I had never seen it before. Perhaps that was the point. A close examination of the different frames indicates the scenes depicted are meant to be taken as if they were photos in an album. Two are torn, and one has stains on it. There may be other anomalies I missed. [If you are curious, the torn ones are both at churches. One is on the way to Northside Church when you first enter the graveyard. Nigel(our hero)walks behind the tear. The other tear is at the back of Ulcombe Church on the way to the shed. On this one, the lighting looks different between the two pieces. Nigel walks behind this one, also.]
This is a long game. I think I believed, three times, I was near the end, just to find something that opened a whole new section of the story. I was getting anxious because the fan was going out on my video card. It increased the excitement level quite a bit. When it started to smell hot, I had to stop the game and switch video cards. That is when the problems started. I started getting weird video corruption on the save/restore screen, and the game locked up once. The first card was an FX5500 nVidia; the second was Radeon 9550. (Yes, I tried different drivers. Didn't help. I think ATI cards just don't work well with my motherboard)
Still, it was a good game. Definitely the best of the series of games involving Matt Clark and Jonathon Boakes. It's a much roomier game than the Dark Falls or Barrow Hill. And it takes place mostly in the day, though it does cycle through day and night sequences. There isn't a great deal of difference between day and night, since the sky is dark and stormy during the day. But it doesn't have the claustrophobic feeling of the other games where you are constantly stumbling around in the dark.
The voice acting is actually quite good. Nigel has an odd rhythm to his speech, like: "How would you like .........to have a vigil?" You get used to it. The rest of the sound is done much better than the previous Jonathon Boakes Games, and is especially effective on headphones.
Oddities in the game.
At one point in the game you are on the hills above the town, and take a photograph of some flowers. Later, this photograph serves in place of the flowers - but since you had to walk right up to the original flowers to take the picture, why not just pick the flowers?
There is a lot of dragonfly imagery in the game. There are large, green dragonflies everywhere. You can even follow one for several frames in "The Fens". All the confirmation screens in the game have a dragonfly on them. A dragonfly picture appears in Nigel's dreams twice. Yet, there is nothing in the story having anything to do with dragonflies. Baffling. (additonal reflection has led me to believe the dragonflies are Hadden Industries remote recording devices)
Nigel has several gadgets for detecting paranormal activity. Yet, when he is speaking face to face with an actual ghost, none of the equipment registers anything.
Strange things about the game
The first problem was with directx 9.0c. On my XP box, 9.0c is already running, but the game would not run until I let the installer "update my directx files". Just let it. It doesn't hurt anything, and the game won't run without the update.
The game uses the Wintermute engine, and is very slow on save/restore. It is also slow returning control to the mouse on scene changes.
There is an update to the game that fixes "inventory problems and other game playabilty features". It's for the US release version only. The installer is insane. It is a 4.52Meg file that "installs" a 294K file. The installer tells you it will install to the default folder, unless you changed the original folder, in which case you will have to specify the path. The path shown is blank. If you click continue, it tells you to specify a path. If you use the Browse button to lead it to the default folder it was supposed to find on its own, it adds New Folder to the end of the path and installs the file (uselessly) in that folder. The only way to make the patch work is to Browse to the path, remove the New Folder, and force it to accept the "default path". Then it will say, "The folder already exists. Are you sure you wish to write to this folder?" Say Yes, and it will, FINALLY, update the game by overwriting the understudy.dhp file with a newer version.
Whenever Jonathan Boakes and Matt Clark get together and make a game, they make a really good one. The Dark Falls, Barrow Hill, and now this - their best yet. I enjoyed it more than any game I've played in years. This is one of the best adventure games I've played. The emphasis of this game is the unfolding of a rich, multi-layered story rather than tough puzzles and dealing with "dying" and "second chances. The story is set in a very picturesque fishing town of Saxton. This virtual town is appealing and I found myself wishing I could visit such a place in real life. I was delighted to learn about a quarter of the way through the game that various villages in Cornwall were used as inspiration. In fact, much of the buildings are actual places in Polperro. The characters are interesting and, yes, there is horror. But, it is intelligent horror with meaning and purpose. There is "right" and "wrong" and our alter-ego, Nigel Danvers, must learn from his mistakes. Some of the ghost stories are very sad and touching. The story has many levels, twists and turns. In the end, I wanted more and was glad for having been on the journey.
Now, for some criticism: First, The interface of the game is very slow and cumbersome. There are tarot cards that flippy-flop to eerie music for loading and saving a game. There are annoying graphics and logos that you have to sit through as you exit the game. Second, the manner in which Nigel Danvers navigates around the environment is extremely complicated. Less posing would be much appreciated. It seemed to take forever for Nigel to stop moving and the arrow/cursor to return. Another annoying feature is the over-repetitive dialogue. I really did get tired of hearing "nothing ventured" everytime Nigel passed through the cave.
All in all, I look forward to a sequel for The Lost Crown...Hopefully, with a faster interface.
The Game wouldn't load after half a dozen attempts. Attempts at contact with the manufacturer was pointless. I ended up returning it and will make a point of never buying another product made by "Got Game Entertainment". Nigel Danvers is on the run - two shadowy agents are on his tail, pursuing him across London to the grand train station at Liverpool Street. Nigel suspects that the afternoon's activities may be to blame! Travel with Nigel Danvers to an eerie seaside town on England's east coast. Learn to use advanced techniques used by real paranormal investigators, and uncover an ancient mystery and treasure. But, beware, not all of the towns residents will help in your mission, whether they are alive or dead. Inspiration from the haunting works of Charles Dickens, M.R. James, Arthur Conan Doyle, and E.F. Benson combines with real ghost-hunting gadgets to bring this frightening story to bone-chilling life. Success or failure in locating wandering spirits depends on your skill as an investigator. Placing motion detectors, night vision cameras, and temperature gauges correctly will reveal a location's haunted past, and expose terrifying apparitions. With nerves of steel, and wits to match, you will soon discover long lost secrets, previously known only to the dead! (GREAT GAME FOR REAL FANS OF THE SERIES)
(broken dream)
(Could have been better)
(Not as bad as people make it out to be) The new Silent Hill brings many changes, some good but most bad, to the series. I first want to say that the new development company has done a horrible job at keeping up with Team Silent (previous developer). Some of the things I liked about the game are the fact that the story-line is OK, the monsters are sweet (but difficult, I'll get to that in a minute,) the graphics are excellent and the characters are very creative. I recommend it to survival horror fans, but I do NOT recommend it to major Silent Hill fans looking for another great Silent Hill game. The only way that I can see someone enjoying this game is if they didn't like the previous titles because this game feels nothing like them at all. In fact, the game is absolutely horrible when compared to previous. Right now I'm going to tell you exactly why it is so bad and why Double Helix should be shut down for turning the greatest video game franchise of all time into a low budget pile of junk:
1. DEAD MONSTERS DISAPPEAR - If your a major Silent hill fan like me, you've probably noticed that in all of the previous titles, when you kill a creature it's dead body stays in the spot you killed it in, even when you leave the room. They do not disappear. This adds a major level of realism to the game, but sadly this new title completely removes it. Now, bodies disappear within seconds of being killed. This was a major major disappointment to me, MAJOR.
2. NO EASY MODE - Another great thing about Silent Hill in the past was that all of the games (with the exception of 0rigins) had an easy mode. And not only was there an easy mode, the easy mode was actually easy, unlike in Resident Evil where the easy mode is still pretty difficult. Well, this new game has no easy mode, just Normal and Professional and the Normal mode is VERY DIFFICULT. Health items are very hard to find and through most of the game you will be using a very small selection of melee weapons and not guns because there are also very limited bullets. I had never in my life had so much difficulty in a Silent Hill game, VERY DISAPPOINTED, but I did finally beat the game.
3. VERY SMALL AMOUNT OF WEAPONS - Silent Hill 4 gave us tons of awesome melee weapons, from golf clubs to torches you could light to small axes, they were literally sweet as anyone could imagine and 0rigins gave us cool things like TV's and toasters and way more. Well, Double Helix managed to screw that up too. This new title has a VERY SMALL selection of weapons, even smaller when it comes to melee weapons, though the ol' steel pipe and knife are there. When you bump into objects they move in this game, it would have been really nice if you could pick up objects and throw them at monsters but nope, you cant.
4. YOU CAN TELL ITS LOW BUDGET - Just by playing it you can tell it's very low budget and does not even try to keep up with the level of excellence offered in previous titles. After you play this game you will seriously think that the developers have never touched a Silent Hill game in their lives. The controls are clunky, some of the areas do not match what was shown in previous games, the flashlight is horrible, it is pretty short (even shorter then previous titles) and it just overall does not feel like Silent Hill.
In the future, if Double Helix develops another Silent Hill game, I will think twice before buying it. If your a Silent Hill fan, you may want to RENT this game, not buy it. Trust me, its not worth it. Although the story-line is not bad, for me it was very hard to get through, both because of the difficulty and the fact that Double Helix removed most of the stuff that made Silent Hill great.
NOTE: I accidently checked the wrong amount of stars, I ment to check lower but Amazon wont let me change it. If your reading this Amazon staff, I ment to check 1 star for fun level.
Scores Audio: 9/10 Graphics: 7/10 Story-line: 7/10 Overall fun: 2/10 I have been a fan of the series from the start. This game was Great. I was scarred&enjoyed the enemies, the only thing I wish is that they "used" Josh a bit more. So as usual can't wait for a new SILENT HILL, Bring it on, I am ready.
I expected more from this game, I'm a fan of the Silent Hill series and had many expectations but I am not convinced this game. I hope that if you get one more this next game to match the new generation of consoles. While the graphics are better than previous versions, it seems to be lacking compared to many other PS3 titles. The gameplay is so-so. The fear factor remains though, which is a plus. It stick to the Silent Hill roots....the updated graphics and lighting are a welcomed touch. The music score is great as always. I enjoying this installment more than SH:4 The Room....but 1 and 2 will always be the best. Follow the story of Alex Shepherd, who is returning to his hometown of Shepherd's Glen to investigate the sudden disappearance of his brother. Silent Hill: Homecomingmarks the debut of the renowned psychological horror series on next-generation consoles. Building upon the series' trademark foundations of atmosphere, adventure and storytelling, it introduces a frightening new and standalone gameplay experience destined to haunt the dreams of both first-time players and those with some experience wandering the famously fog-shrouded streets of the town of Silent Hill and its new sinister sister city Shepherd's Glen. Struggling with his own grip on reality, it's here that Alex must unravel the mystery behind his nightmares, discover the truth behind his brother's disappearance, and confront the evil that takes hold of his own flesh and blood in the process.Improved Gameplay Firmly steeped in the Survival-Horror genre its series has been pivotal in establishing, action inHomecomingremains based on exploration of the terrors residing in the communities surrounding Toluca lake and puzzle-solving skill as a means of surviving them. But to its credit game developer Double Helix refuses to rest on past laurels, choosing instead to include new more accessible gameplay in the hopes of gaining a new audience forHomecoming. Examples of this gameplay include:Next-Gen Visual and Spatial Features- Every sequel seeks reinvent the namesake game in their series.Homecomingdoes this in three ways, by adding the ability to toggle between a traditional third-person view and an action-oriented first-person view; by adding fully 3-D physics to the game, creating a realistic range of motion for any and all objects impacted by the player; and by adding transitions or "Hell States" that alter the game's physical landscape at points in the game both in real-time and via cinematics. All three actively change the way players see themselves and in the process create a whole new game experience. An Enhanced Combat System- Adding to the standard knives, axes, pipes and other melee weapons that made up the arsenal of previousSilent Hillgames,Homecomingadds a wide variety of guns and explosives. Fitting with the military back-story of protagonist Alex Shephard, these weapons can be wielded in attacks weighted as weak or strong and can be strung together in combos to stun or incapacitate opponents, who can then be taken out with powerful finishing moves. With practice players can even perform evasive ducks and rolls and follow these up with counterattacks. But remember that enemy AI has also been significantly improved to compensate for your higher degree of combat prowess, and that it's not uncommon to battle multiple monsters simultaneously.Key Features:- Enter the next chapter ofSilent Hillas you delve deeper in the tormented history of the town and learn of the evil that surrounds Toluca Lake.

- Solve the treacherous and deadly puzzles of Silent Hill to discover its darkest secrets.
- Silent Hill: Homecomingwill feature an all-new soundtrack by acclaimed series composer Akira Yamaoka.
Exceptional Replay Value Although Alex Shepherd is the only playable character inSilent Hill: Homecomingthere are many other important characters--some returning from earlier games in the series--that can have a dramatic impact on the game. When interacting with these, players are given a choice in how to proceed via dialog trees. Will you take the short route letting only the search for your brother guide you or will you explore the nooks and crannies that make up the mystery ofSilent Hillhidden in the small talk you share with non-playable characters? The choice is yours, with different paths providing for possible alternate endings each time you delve into the game.A Frighteningly Masterful Soundtrack All games in the Survival-Horror genre seek to create tension and unease through sound andHomecomingdoes this masterfully through the compositions and sound engineering of Akira Yamaoka. Having scored the music and effects for dozens of video game titles, including all of the previous games in theSilent Hillseries, Yamaoka is considered a master at using sound to illicit a response. (Very fun, very dumb. If you like the original, you'll like this..kind of)
(Good, but not AS Good.)
(Awesome Game, Long Live the Bunnyhop)
(Serious Sam meets Satan) Painkiller OVERDOSE installs the Securom spyware program on your machine. To get rid of it Google trashreg and unlocker, two programs that can get Securom off your machine. On top of this OVERDOSE has the most annoying voice-over of any game I've ever played! I uninstalled it after about a half-hour, your character babbles like a teenager trying to sound cool constantly, it gets grating real fast. Avoid this game. Simply, this is another chapter of Painkiller. Those of us that loved the original, and loved BOH, will also like this one.
Basically, Painkiller has no real story (it has a silly one), and you run around as fast as you can shooting things. I probably played the original over 100 times through over the years, and the BOH follow on, about 50. This one is much the same, although it takes some time to reorient yourself into Painkiller thought
The dynamics are almost the same as all PK games, and you'll have to take a bit of time to get yourself into it. Once you're acclimated, its a barrel of laughs. If you take it too seriously, you're missing the point of the PK franchise. Lots of dumb enemies, lots of twisted weapons, lots of silly ammo. And then its over..
Don't overthink this one. Its a goofy way to spend some spare time. Its not serious art (bioshock) or great strategy and story (stalker, half life series), its just a shooter I personally found Painkiller Overdose to be MUCH more challenging than the first ones, but also considerably less enjoyable. Belial (Your Character) Isn't developed very well, and becomes cheesy/annoying VERY quickly. The weapons are also changed from the original, and more nice/flashy, but ultimately unnecessary ones are added.
I personally would have been far happier running around as Daniel Garner again, with my smaller but more streamlined arsenal from the first two.
However, No such luck... The game is still challenging though, and if you can ignore Belial's ridiculous babbling, it can still be quite fun. At least until the end Boss, who is just ridiculous in his final stage. Excellent gameplay, graphics and sound. Very reminiscent of other fast paced quake 3 like games such as return to castle wolfenstein. Take the best parts of Painkiller, throw in Serious Sam gameplay and humor, mix in a half-demon, half-angel, and you get Painkiller Overdose. While it is really just a painkiller add-on, it freshens up the tried and true formula with some unique weapons, new character, and very cool enemies. I have not finished the game yet, but so far I am loving it. I have played through 4 levels. The first level gives such a sense of fire and brimstone, it is palpable. The enemies feel more like the hordes of Hell than any game I've played. I like the familiarity of Painkiller, but I am glad they have de-emphasized the hop-skip-jump routines to find hidden holy items. The homage to Serious Sam is great as I was a huge fan of that series. I give it a high fun factor. If you are looking for a deep plot with puzzle solving, this is not the game for you. The critically-acclaimed and award-winning FPS franchise is back! Packed with tons of fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled single player and multiplayer action, Painkiller Overdose brings with it 6 innovative new demonic weapons, mind-bending physics, lightning-player maps, over 40 demented and sickly-twisted monsters from Hell and gigantic end bosses that will blow your mind! New End Bosses of colossal statures standing guard over Hell's crumbling domain and the entrances to the other realms! A revitalized commitment to multiplayer, with a series of stats tracking features and game server options intended for a more intense multiplayer experience. Multiplayer compatibility with original Painkiller multiplayer maps and game modes! Endless hours of gameplay with both single player and multiplayer gameplay. Rerations < Painkiller: Overdose >

customer 's review (PC Game - Alone In The Dark - The New Nightmare)
(Not very recent but still a must have)
(lots to do)
(underated)
(1 of the best games I've ever played) Good older game...CD is very good condition, as described. Shipping was very good as well I had bought this game at Mardens about 6-7 years ago and during the years had ended up misplacing on of the CD's. Unfortunatly you need all 3 CD's to beat the game, so I was in tough situation. Happened to be crusing through Amazon when I had the idea to see if they had it, and sure enough they did. The quality was perfect, even though it was used. Definitely a 5 star :-D I have enjoyed all the "Alone in the Dark" games. Adventure games are my favorite genre. This one goes back to the basic mansion crawl. I downloaded a couple walkthroughs from the internet plus the cheat codes and game hints. I am playing it with infinite health, ammunition, and almost 100 saves. I need help to get through any computer game. Still, it's taking a long time to complete. My walkthrough did not point out that most rooms and hallways have lightswitches, but when I discovered that, it greatly enhanced the enjoyment of the scenery. This is something new that allows the player to see the artwork. It's also a 2-for-one game in that it can be played as either of two characters, and both are different enough to make each time through enjoyable. A very good underated game. A steal at under $5.00. I wish there was a sequel because i would buy it. (I suck at spelling keep that in mind)When I first found this game it was at gamestop for Ps1 I thaut it looked cool so I got it and i'm glad I did.To start out with I disliked the camra it was seen by seen(NOT point and click)and you didnt no where it would be placed(in a window, right next to you,a few yards away, stuff like that) but when I got use to it I relly liked it.well I got stuck more times than I can count and put it away for awile and perodicly played it then came a day I got my Xbox 360 and I sold my Ps2.Well I got to thinking about this game again wishing I would have finished it so I got it for pc (found it here for a cent plus shipping :))and the graphics were much better than the ps1.well you no what I beat edward carnby in less than 2 days,a bit longer for aline cedrac, and I had to admit that it was on the top of the list for me.but I took 1 star off because it can get very frustrating but dont let that get you down.now people who say its a resident evil(except for the engine) bull crap alone in the dark was around in 1992 and resident evil was around in 1996,Tomb raider times, (and its a lot less gory.)you can run in this one (for those who have been familear with the series)which is a magor upgrade,no longer pressing the derectional keys to attack you hold down the left mouse button, use the mouse or derectional keys to point your wepon, and right click to shoot.well those of you who are familear with the series the engine (unless posted above)is the same(3d things in a 2d background :).)Buy or ignore, its up to you I hope this helped and plz exuse my spelling mistakes :). rank 9.5 out of 10. Alone in the Dark (PC CD-ROM), Product #23674 Edward Carnby, the supernatural detective, is back! And this time it's for revenge. Carnby's best friend, Charles Fiske, has been found dead near Shadow Island, a mysterious island off the coast of Maine. Carnby's investigation quickly leads him to Fred Johnson, who informs him of Fiske's search for the three ancient tablets that, when placed in a specific location, will unlock an incredible and dangerous power. Johnson pleads with Carnby to pick up where Fiske left off and reopen the investigation. Carnby accepts the mission to find and destroy the murderer of Fiske and avenge his death. The original survival-horror franchise continues with a pure blend of intense action and suspenseful adventure.Alone in the Darkimmerses the player into a dark and strange atmosphere where conventional rules do not apply. The player must overcome his natural fear of the dark unknown and control Edward Carnby through a deep and highly detailed story line. Armed with a flashlight and a pistol, Carnby must find the necessary items to survive, as well as the clues that will help him escape his ultimate nightmare. Alone in the Darkfeatures an immersive and emotional story line with more than 20 characters; incredibly detailed and realistic environments; and a dark atmosphere that plays with obscurity and light.
