(One of the Very Best.... Ever!)
(Carrie - Blu-ray Info)
(A MALEVOLENT MASTERWORK)
(Classic "B" Movie) In league with 'The Shining', 'Cujo', and so on. A 70s masterpiece in the horror genre. It is relentless in scary psychological undertones that play on the emotions, sympathy as much as terror and wonder. Sissy Spacek is dynomite. The filming is dynomite as well with touches of the 70s that you make you wonder how you survived this era. Truly creepy but a very interesting drama as well. Beauty and terror ride high in this feat by Brian DePalma - and the mind of Stephen King. Quite simply, Carrie is one of the finest masterpieces to hit the motion picture screen. No other than Sissy Spacek could have played the downtrodden, bullied young girl with telekentic powers who is the brunt of everyone's jokes. To make matters worse, she lives with her crazed, religious mother who complicates life for her bullied daughter. Piper Laurie is superb in this role and should have received co-top billing, rather than John Travolta. He was actually the weak link in the whole story, yet he received co-billing. But that aside, Carrie gets her revenge and those who tormented her pay a terrible price! The prom scene is one of the most gripping I've ever seen. Acting, photography and Brian de Palmas expert directing make Carrie one great film! #Theatrical Trailer (HD) De Palma managed to get a Stephen King novel right, but it's the sensational acting of Sissy Spacek, and Piper Laurie that drive this film way beyond the merely 'good' range. This is a psych-horror film that had so many splatter-fests ripping it off ( with not even close to the impact )- including a thoroughly, pathetic sequel- it should have gotten franchise rights. THE RING wasn't as scary as CARRIE by half. Aesthetically speaking, the afore-mentioned film doesn't even come close to CARRIE ( only a handful of 'creepers' do ). If you love revenge-films, or just no-holds-barred horror this is the ultimate in payback flicks. A must for any horror fan. This is a fun horror movie that lots of people have since copied. Several actors received their first real exposure (pun intended) in this movie and Piper Laurie restarted her career. This film does have some fine grain in certain scenes but this was never a high dollar production and I'm doubtful that it is going to get much better. This terrifying adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling horror novel was directed by shock maestro Brian De Palma for maximum, no-holds-barred effect. Sissy Spacek stars as Carrie White, the beleaguered daughter of a religious kook (Piper Laurie) and a social outcast tormented by her cruel, insensitive classmates. When her rage turns into telekinetic powers, however, school's out in every sense of the word. De Palma's horrific climax in a school gym lingers forever in the memory, though the film is also built upon Spacek's remarkable performance and Piper Laurie's outlandishly creepy one. John Travolta has a small part as a thug, De Palma's future wife, Nancy Allen, is his girlfriend, and Amy Irving makes her screen debut as one of the girls giving Carrie a hard time.--Tom Keogh Based on the best-selling Stephen King novel, Carrie "catches the mind, shakes it and refuses to let it go" (Time)! Starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie (in Oscar(r)-nominated* performances), John Travolta and Amy Irving, this ultimate revenge fantasy is "absolutely spellbinding" (Roger Ebert), "outrageously witty" (Los Angeles Times) and one of the all-time great horror classics! At the center of the terror is Carrie (Spacek), a tortured high-school misfit with no confidence, no friends...and no idea about the extent of her secret powers of telekinesis. But when her psychotic mother and sadistic classmates finally go too far, the once-shy teen becomes an unrestrained, vengeance-seeking powerhouse who, with the help of her 'special gift,' causes all hell to break loose in a famed cinematic frenzy of blood, fire and brimstone! *1976: Spacek, Actress; Laurie, Supporting Actress Rerations < Carrie [VHS] >

customer 's review (The building of mirrors)
(Heather O'Rourke DID Finish This Movie)
(One of the best final chapters)
(The final film of Heather O'Rourke.)
(Third Time Is Mediocre) After recently discovering the original Poltergeist, I had to check out the sequels. But unfortunately, this one can not compare to the original, nor come even halfway to be as good as the first one.
The story to this one goes is that Carol Anne from the first movie is now living with her Aunt and her family. They think she is able to suggest and manipulate what people see, due to her shrink being a whack job himself. He is convinced that Carol Anne can make people think they see something, and suggest to another to break a mirror or something to give the impression there is a poltergeist doing it.
However, it turns out the shrink does not know best, there really is one and Carol Anne is kidnapped into the between world again, along with her cousin and her boyfriend as her Aunt and Uncle desperately search for her.
Some of the scenes in this movie are simple FX shots with split screens, but have a pretty cool look to them, but it's the whole lack of action and suspense that leave this movie feeling like it's not as good as could have been if a better script had been written for it.
I dunno about anyone else, but I really felt the ending was not what it should have been, it should have been like the original, like just when you think it's safe, all hell breaks lose again. And, I guess they did try for something like that, but it was too predictable that it was not over yet, because you kind of want it to start up again AFTER they get out of the reflection dimension. I felt disappointed when that happened and then the credits roll.
*spoiler* (don't read on from here if you havent seen this, but intend to) I thought they should have kept the movie going, and done the next part around the two poltergeists that come into there world via the bodies of the daughter and the friend. It kind of seemed like it was done, and forgotten about, leaving me think, "well, what happened to those 2?" However, it might be a lead way for Poltergeist 4.
Also, the thing that I think let's this movie down in ways, is it does not really seem like a poltergeist, it's more like just a ghost movie where one Ghost is trying to abduct everyone in the family. I have the feeling this might have been written as an interesting idea for a spooky movie, but then someone had the idea to customize it to make it a 3rd installment.
I say that with the reason of it not seeming all that poltergeist-y (is that a word?) and that the rest of the sub characters seem like they did not play much point in the movie, and had no real meaning to be there, almost like it was put into the script at the last minute without any real detail to any of the characters.
Overall, it's watchable, it's far from the worst movie of all time, I just think it leaves too many gaps, and a lot of things that where not explored that would help make the movie a lot better then it is. There seems to be a lot of misinformation floating around about this movie and whether or not Heather O'Rourke had finished it before she died. Here are the facts:
1. Principal photography began in Chicago in April 1987 and was completed by the end of June 1987.
2. In November of 1987, the FINISHED film was given a PG rating by the MPAA.
3. In December 1987, plans were made to re-shoot the ending. Planning continued into January 1988.
4. February 1, 1988, Heather O'Rourke passed away.
5. The script pages for the planned re-shoot were re-worked, and the new ending using a body double stand in for Heather was shot during the week of March 14, 1988.
6. In April, the film was re-edited and re-submitted to the MPAA, and then given a PG-13 rating.
So, Heather DID finish this movie. It's very likely that the original ending is stashed away in the MGM archives somewhere. For more details, visit [...]
P3 was one of my favorite movies. Sadly, Heater O' Rourke died b4 they were finished filming. This film is dedicated to her memory. It was sad to see a 13 year old actor die. Own this final chapter and prepare to be scared JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson and Oliver Robins do not appear in this film. Heather O'Rourke and Zelda Rubinstein do return as this poltergeist story goes off into a different direction. Carol Anne (now 12) is staying with her aunt Pat (Nancy Allen) and uncle Bruce (Tom Skerritt) in Chicago for a while. They live in a penthouse above the Galleria in this skyscraper tower (actually is the John Hancock Tower). Carol Anne is enrolled in a school for gifted children. She has a cynical psychiatrist, Dr. Seaton (Richard Fire) that does not believe in her psychic ability, but is trying to bring her fears of 1982 and 1986 back to surface. Carol Anne has her psychiatrist all figured out and is cautious. The unusual phenomenon has already begun inside the tower and the evil preacher, Kane (now played by Nathan Davis) is after Carol Anne again. Not the best Poltergeist film and there is a reason for it, but it does have some great "mirror" effects. Before this film was released, we all heard the sad news that Heather O'Rourke had unexpectedly died. The film was on a four-month hiatus. O'Rourke had a blocked intestine and it had burst. She died February 1, 1988. So much money was put into the film that it was decided they had to finish it by re-writing the ending and using a stand-in to play "Carol Anne". The story of the movie became totally different all together due to the death of Heather O'Rouke and not being able to re-shoot scenes with her. Nice added touch of writing was the mention of Will Sampson's character, "Taylor", having given "Tagina" the amulet. Will Sampson, who was in Poltergeist 2, passed away June 3, 1987. Also in the cast: Lara Flynn Boyle, Kip Wentz, Joey Garfield, Catherine Gatz. Due to the death of Heather O'Rourke, they never made another Poltergeist movie, however their was the Showtime tv series, POLTERGEIST: THE LEGACY (1996-1999).
***Update: August 21, 2008, MGM has decided to go ahead with their plans for a "POLTERGEIST" remake. As of 2009, the scriptwriting is continuing. The film could be released in 2011. Since POLTERGEIST was a masterpiece, and POLTERGEIST II: THE OTHER SIDE was merely serviceable, what does that make POLTERGEIST III then? Unfortunately, the answer is, in a word, Mediocre.
Heather O'Rourke, who died shortly after this film was released, returns as the clairvoyant Carol Anne Freleng, who is still haunted by the Cuesta Verde spirits, including the Reverend Kane (Nathan Davis, taking over for Julian Beck, who had the role in POLTERGEIST II). This time, she is at the mercy of the evil Kane in a high-rise where she now lives with her aunt (Nancy Allen), uncle (Tom Skerritt), and their daughter (Lara Flynn Boyle). Once again, she has to rely on her own resources and those of the one and only Tangina Barrons (Zelda Rubinstein, making her appearance here one of the film's few real pleasures).
With this third film, if not in the second, the POLTERGEIST story degenerated into tired and tiresome Hollywood exploitation. Minus the genius of co-producer/co-writer Steven Spielberg, Carol Anne's story really has no place to go. Both O'Rourke and Rubinstein are, not surprisingly, quite good given the mediocre screenplay handed them by Brian Taggert and director Gary Sherman (RAW MEAT). Sadly, however, the film lacks the warm family structure that Jobeth Williams and Craig T. Nelson provided her; and in their place are Skerritt, Allen, and Boyle, who, though extremely capable actors, play truly unsympathetic characters who regard Carol Anne as an abberation in their lives. Without the sympathetic family, plus Jerry Goldsmith's music scoring genius, POLTERGEIST III is a film with almost nothing left in the tank. Rerations < Poltergeist 3 [VHS] >

customer 's review (Joel is the best)
("Meanwhile, back in movie 'A' . . .")
(my kids' hilarious intro to MST3K!)
(Potatoes!)
(Good? He's the Best!) This is one of the funniest mst3k ever. Joel is great and so funny. Never get tried of it. This turkey is a perfect example of an unwatchable movie made endearing by the MST3K treatment. I tend to favor the Mike episodes, but in this Joel effort, he and the Bot's were right on their game.
The story is about aliens which crash on earth and lay some eggs. One of them, in the possession of a boy, hatches and he now has a new friend. A low budget "ET" ripoff, pathetically executed. (I thought Joel and company missed an opportunity to ridicule the absurd and unexplainable British accent that the boy spoke with).
Lots of disjointed subplots (poachers, a dorky family rock band). Cheesy looking aliens. Disorienting editing. Much fertile MST3K source material.
In the Mystery Science Theater world, this is a 5 star film.
Additionally, if I may use this review to make a general MST3K comment ---During the past couple of weeks, I have worked my way through a stack of Mystery Science videos, watching one during most evenings. I finally ran out and went to plug in an Outer Limits DVD last night, and, I had the strange sensation that I was going to have to watch the show "alone". I then realized that watching the MST3K films was kind of like going to the movies with friends . . . witty, entertaining friends that I could place on pause when necessary, and then store back in my bookcase before turning into bed. If I can stop chuckling long enough to steady my hand, I'll be able to write this review. The "movie" being mocked never rises above that cheesy camcorder-on-a-weekend feel. As one of the bots jeered, "this movie has more fog than the movie "Fog!" They were so right to say that the "plot" kept shifting from "movie A" to "movie B" ... up to "movie D" for dumb!
At the beginning you'll meet the "stars" singing some sort of 60s-a-go-go as background for a pointless and scratchy male singer. Bang! We now have characters, plot (I hope you caught it) and [heh heh] soon-to-be victims! Turn it up baby, it's doesn't get any better! Actually, it was the only way this "B-flat movie" could inject enough victims to get picked off by the space invaders. Fear not, we move swiftly from that dork recording studio into the wild outdoors, where aliens have, of course, just landed.
Oh, and don't worry about the tall green alien with the sunglasses that you see during the opening credits. You never see him again. I guess the writer forgot that loose end, amidst all of his other troubles.
And hey, I hate to pop your bubble, but there ain't no pods in this movie! And the lip-sync is off soooooo badly, that my 10-year-old daughter had to imitate it all movie long! Our shadowy commentors made us laugh so hard that I got a headache and had to keep wiping tears of shock off my cheeks!
Late in this shameless production, the boy-star (maybe it was his camcorder that they used to make this thing) shouts that he hates his elephant-nosed friend -- for no apparent reason. (Of course this is while the rock-singer-turned-camper looks on, and mysteriously has his first moment of compassion as he listens in, and then we realize that he is about 100 yards away... and don't forget the fog and woods blocking his view! Dang, this movie is BAD!) Anyway, the bots' comment about the little kid (mind you, people have been killed all movie long) is "Wow, this kid has mood swings. That's not good!"
At the end, our comedy trio says what we are all thinking --- "Let's get outta here!" This MST3K episode is hilarious! I really do recommend buying this. I agree, this is my favorite Joel episode I have seen so far. You won't be disappointed! Probably the funniest MST3K available so far from Rhino. A horrendously bad movie (it does have a plot at least), great skits and songs from Joel and the Bots.
If you don't own it, get it. If you already own, get another, they're small. Rerations < Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Pod People [VHS] >

(Fictional Alaska)
(Pretty Fair Remake)
(Good Acting Elevates This 'Sleeper')
(A Well Made Thriller!!!!) INSOMNIA is a fantastic thriller, full of twists, turns, and arctic-cold atmosphere. Al Pacino (The Godfather 1 and 2, Scarface, Heat, etc.) is LA homicide detective Will Dormer, sent to Nightmute, Alaska to investigate a murder. Will has a lot of professional / personal baggage that complicates matters, causing him to hide his own secrets while trying to solve the crime. Add to this the fact that he's arrived in northern Alaska during it's season of perpetual daylight, and he's got major sleeping problems as well! Between the murder case, the eternal daylight, and Will's own conscience, he quickly becomes a mess! It's amazing that he can still function at all, let alone, well. Hilary Swank (The Gift, 11:14) is a young officer who assists Dormer, only to find her own loyalties and sense of justice challenged. Robin Williams (One Hour Photo, The Night Listener) plays a seemingly mild-mannered sociopath whose one frantic desire is to cover / save his own a$$! INSOMNIA succeeds at building tension while showing Will Dormer's mental disintegration. A classic crime drama w/ something extra. Loaded w/ memorable scenes like the chase-in-the-fog, chase-across-the-floating-logs, and invisible-oncoming-truck sequences, INSOMNIA holds up well after many repeat viewings. Highly recommended... P.S.- Watch for both Katherine Isabelle and Emily Perkins from the GINGER SNAPS movies, as the victim's best friend and the eulogizer at her funeral respectively... I lived in Alaska for 3 years, so I have to say what a crappy telling of the enviroment. The story was not good either, and I love Pacino and Williams, but are you serious? The inacuracy of the temperature for the time of year that they were dipicting is ridiculous. When it is the longest day of the year in Alaska, which is June 22nd if you did not know, the temperature is actually WARM! Do not fall for the stereo type of Alaska being snow covered and cold year round, because it is not. They do have permafrost, but that does not cause your breathe to be cold and seen on screen. I need a jacket when it should be 70 degrees outside. What are you trying to do? I was so bothered by this, and if Alaska were just the backdrop, that would be one thing, but it is actually the "trickster" of the movie by playing havoc on Al Pacino and his sleep. Also, it would not be that difficult to block out the light. Everyone that lives there has figured it out, why would someone just visiting not be able to find a room with real shades. Not those cheap Wal-Mart dollar Ninty-nine speacials. Horrible. And Now to the story. Unbeleivable in ever sense of the word. Fiction takes somes liberties, but are you serious? Robin Williams is a great dramatic actor, so that wasnt the probalem. It was the character that he was forced to try to become. I "accidently" killed her? Don't forget about the "wild Card"? Without giving this movie away, let me just save you some time. Do not rent this. Do not buy this. I watched iton demand, and I feel like i was robbed still. DO NOT WATCH THIS HORRIBLE INACURATE MOVIE! Actually I rate this 4.5 stars. Christopher Nolan has done well with his second major project. The use of the beautiful Alaskan scenery and contrasting man made structures, trash, and litter is amazing. Pacino gives his usual strong performance and we've come to expect the same from Miss Swank. Robin Williams again proves that comedians are more at home in a dramatic role than many serious actors in a comedy. A well done remake of an excellent foreign film. Al Pacino's acting once again is a highlight of a film he's in. He has the capacity to dominate a film with his presence. In this re-make of the Norwegian film, Pacino is excellent as a good-yet-tainted policeman who starts to unravel after not sleeping for four or five days. The Alaskan summer, with light 24 hours of day, can do that to visitors
Robin Williams, meanwhile, plays a killer. It's funny how comedians can do so well playing dramatic roles and Williams is a prime example. He's especially good at creepy nut-cases (See "One Hour Photo") Williams doesn't enter the movie until about halfway through and he's fascinating in a low-key role (until the end).
For a modern-day crime film, this doesn't have a lot of action but that's fine if the acting is this good and the story involving. Here, the acting is better than the story. Kudos to Hillary Swank, too, for her performance as the cop.
The Alaskan scenery ain't bad, either.
I bought this movie from this website, and I have to say that it was a good, tense thriller. Al Pacino's performance as the detective was good, but it's worth watching to see Robin Williams' performance as the killer. His performance was top notch. This is the dark side of Robin Williams unleashed. A great thriller for fans of the thriller genre. CRIME NEVER SLEEPS. NEITHER DOES WILL DORMER, A VETERAN LAPD HOMICIDE DETECTIVE SENT NORTH TO ALASKA TO HEAD A MURDER CASE. THERE HIS INVESTIGATION IS DISRUPTED BY AN EVER-SHINING MIDNIGHT SUN THAT WREAKS SLEEP-DEPRIVING HAVOC ON HIS BODY CLOCK&BRINGS DORMER'S SHADY, GUILT-PLAGUED PAST INTO THE OPEN. As a more conventional follow-up to his innovative thrillerMemento, Christopher Nolan'sInsomniaoffers ample proof that his skills are genuine. A superbly crafted remake of the 1997 Norwegian thriller, this moody police procedural is transplanted to a remote Alaskan town, where a veteran Los Angeles detective (Al Pacino) arrives to investigate the murder of a teenaged girl. Professional tragedy collides with psychological turmoil as the detective suffers from sleeplessness under the region's perpetual daylight, and a local rookie cop (Hilary Swank) begins to suspect that truths are being hidden as the disturbing case unfolds. While the Alaskan setting intensifies the atmospheric mystery, Pacino's bleary-eyed disorientation adds a rich layer to his character's erratic behavior, and the casting of Robin Williams as the killer was a risk that pays off nicely. In many respects better than the original,Insomniais a Hollywood remake that's refreshingly free of compromise.--Jeff Shannon Rerations < Insomnia (Widescreen Edition) >

(Go Bananas over this set :))
(Just the Set, mam...)
(Planet of the Apes)
(Like it was filmed yesterday . . .) The five Planet of the Apes movies start out with a classic (No. 1), and end with an unintentionally hilarious 5th film. One can see, when viewing the films in order, that each successive entry in the series had a lower budget, and fewer big stars (Going from Charlton Heston to Paul Williams is quite a leap into D-list territory). Still, as a (relatively) cohesive story arc, the series holds up despite its obvious shortcomings, and has become a sci-fi standard.
The DVD transfers are generally good (the first film being the best by far), although special features are minimal (the previously-produced documentary with Roddy McDowall, and theatrcal trailers).
But for a budget price, this is a still a no-brainer purchase for sci-fi fans. And for those who want to forget the hideous Mark Wahlberg remake.
With all the reviews of each film all over the place, I will make short and simple. Planet of the Apes is the best of the whole series, however the other films, Beneath, Conquest, Escape and Battle for the Planet of the Apes all are worth watching. They might not be as good as the first, but they all have their own merits. Obviously the budgets sank as the series moved on, but they are all entertaining in their own way. To me it was worth owning the entire set, you get the whole series, widescreen, THX , super sharp transfers and a bonus disc for under 40.00. Even if I didn't like one of the movies Id still get the whole set , which is what I usually do if I enjoy most of the movies of a set (3 out 4, 2 out of 3,etc) For those who haven't gone Blu-Ray this is still the best set to get. In closing, yes Planet of the Apes is the superior film of the whole bunch but I think the rest all hold up well with great acting, stories&the constant battle of man vs ape, plus the endings are incredible. To me the whole set is worth getting... Exactly what I was looking for, a viewing copy on DVD of all 5 Planet of the Apes movies... The box was a bit dinged up, but that probably happened in shipping, the cases for, and the individual disks were ok, that is what was important to me.
There were no visible defects on the disks and the moies played flawlessly.. I am a happy camper. These original classics are very cool. They were shipped to my home very quickly and in perfect condition. If you've never seen any of them they are MUST SEE movies. Well worth every penny, this quality digital copy looks as though it was filmed just yesterday, hard to believe its from 1968 . The sound is crisp&true, overrall its a genuine quality package of a timeless Sci-Fi (and political) thriller performed by veteran seasoned actors with visionary cinematography . A MUST HAVE for any serious collection . A boxed set this good doesn't come down the Pike often . (Don't fear the reapers)
(Vampire Heaven)
(A New Breed of vampires)
(Not a vampire movie) This is another action packed Blade movie. Not as good as the first Blade but still takes you on a thrilling ride. Listen to the director commentary, and you'll hear Guillermo del Toro saying that he wanted the Blade sequel to be a fun, gory, comic-booky experience.
Well, he succeeded. Grotesquely gory and full of rapid-fire violence, "Blade II" is unashamed of its animeish action sequences and tongue-in-cheek humor ("Catch you later!"). Wesley Snipes and del Toro give it a suitably monstrous charm, although David Goyer's leaden dialogue bogs down many promising scenes.
While a monstrous hooded vampire preys on other vampires, Blade (Snipes) manages to track down his vampirized mentor Whistler (Kris Kristofferson) and cures him of his vampirism.
Then a pair of vampire ninjas arrive, bearing a message for Blade: ancient vampire lord Damaskinos (Thomas Kretschmann) wants to meet with him. Turns out there's a monstrous vampiric mutation called the Reapers loose -- highly contagious, really disgusting, and preys on humans and vampires alike. Blade reluctantly agrees to work with the elite vampire assassin squad called the Bloodpack.
Of course, tensions run high between the vampires and the little gang sworn to kill them -- especially when they arrive at the rave club House of Pain and lose some of their number. Blade takes on the Reapers' leader, Jared Nomak (Luke Goss), only to discover that there are some nasty secrets behind the Reapers' origins. And Damaskinos' plans are far nastier and further-reaching than anyone could have guessed.
Those expecting a copy of the first "Blade" movie should leave the building now. Guillermo del Toro's direction gives "Blade II" a very unique flavour all its own -- it's faster, more grotesque, more fantastical, and more infused with quirky humor. The one sour note is the magical return of Whistler at the beginning, where it turns out that whoops, he wasn't QUITE dead and he's getting better. Contrived much?
And del Toro has fun with the action -- lots of grotesque gore (those flip-out Reaper mouths), anime-style action (Blade garrotes a vampire on a motorcycle) and highly destructive gun battles. The first four-fifths of the story are just mindless shoot-'em-up-and-burn-up-to-ashes Reaper-hunts, but it mutates in the last act. Suddenly we're faced with a vampiric tale of betrayal, revenge and Grecian-style tragedy.
The big problem with this movie? Goyer's dialogue is hit or miss. Sometimes it's hilarious ("You're human." "Barely. I'm a lawyer"), and sometimes it sounds like he put it in because it looked cool on paper ("There's an old saying: Keep your friends close, keep your enemies closer"). Much of the time, it's the latter.
Wesley Snipes seems to be having a good time here, with lots of wild action and some wry humour ("Now you got an explosive device stuck to the back of your head"), and Leonor Varela provides a hint of possible romance as an autopsy-performing vampire princess. And the whispery-voiced Luke Goss manages to take a truly repulsive character ("so... so sweet!") and give him an air of tragedy.
In fact, most of the acting is pretty good in this movie, although most of the actors don't get a lot to do (Donnie Yen is particularly underused), though Ron Perlman is wonderfully loathsome as a neo-Nazi vampire who gets on Blade's bad side. Norman Reedus is intensely annoying as Scud, though -- you'll spend a lot of time hoping that someone shoots him by accident.
"Blade II" is a very different beast than its predecessor, and del Toro does a great job with some truly mediocre scripting. Worth seeing if you have a strong stomach. A great follow-up to the original movie. New vampires, new weapons, new tricks. If you're a "sucker" for vampire movies, this one delivers. Blade 2 knocks blade 1 out of the baseball field. this blade movie has tons more of action and tougher villians for blade to fight like nomack. this is the best in all of the blade movies. and it has a awesome soundtrack. and awesome characters. this movie rocks. I like to be entertained, but this movie isn't a vampire movie and is a little weird.
The fight sequences are pretty pathetic, a mix of WWE wrestling movies and bad computer graphics. The fact they are vampires is just a side thing, as they never actually do anything like a vampire (like drink blood, for starters). Also, this film shows that death comes according to emotion. In the first Blade, a vampire exposed to the sun died a screaming and explosive death. In this one, she flakes a way lovingly in his arms as the sun rises.
Besides Blade and Vampires fighting together, the vampires he fights with are cheesy and not warriors. Just because blade carries a sword (which seems to be an effective weapon when fighting vampires), doesn't mean they have to carry battle axes, a katana, and anything that is decidely ineffective against Blade (who they are someone trained to fight) and inferior to guns.
Fighting the "enemies", which seem a bit contrived, is pathetic. They are easily killed with UV light, and cannot be killed with bullets and blades. So, naturally, they tend to pump as many rounds as they can into these creatures when they could just use a blacklight, available at any store which sells hardware (or Amazon, where I got mine...).
Blades sidekick is just a forerunner of the annoying male character in the third movie as well...
It is still entertaining, but only at a discount. BLADE FORMS AN UNEASY ALLIANCE WITH THE VAMPIRE COUNCIL IN ORDER TO COMBAT THE REAPERS VAPIRES WHO FEED ON VAMPIRES. Aptly described by critic Roger Ebert as "a vomitorium of viscera,"Blade IItakes the express route to sequel success. So if you enjoyedBlade, you'll probably drool over this monster mash, which is anything but boring. Set (and filmed) in Prague, the plot finds a new crop of "Reaper" vampires threatening to implement a viral breeding program, and they're nearly impervious to attacks by Blade (Wesley Snipes), his now-revived mentor Whistler (Kris Kristofferson), and a small army of "normal" vampires who routinely combust in a constant conflagration of spectacular special effects. It's up to Blade to conquer theüber-vamps, and both Snipes and director Guillermo del Toro (Mimic) serve up a nonstop smorgasbord of intensely choreographed action, creepy makeup, and graphic ultraviolence. It's sadistic, juvenile, numbing, and--for those who dig this kind of thing--undeniably impressive. With the ever-imposing Ron Perlman as a vampire villain.--Jeff Shannon Rerations < Blade II (New Line Platinum Series) >

(Hope book 3 is better)
(Great paranormal with suprising twists)
(Speechless!)
(out of this world) I loved this book, which was a continuation of the Carinian's Seeker. Tameth the vampiress is one of those women who must fight hard and be tough but is every bit of a woman. And Alaan, the vampire whom she is attracted to tries to fight his strong attraction to her because he was still grieving over a past tragedy. They soon give in to their attraction and know that it is more than just attraction, but they are destined to be together. The sex was off the charts!!! I couldn't put this book down! I bought the first and second book of this series at the same time and read them back to back. The first book I absolutely loved but the second one fell a bit short for me for the simple fact that a lot of things that the main characters said and did in the first book was repeated by the (main) characters in the second book. It was a bit annoying, especially the phrasing and actions. It felt like I was reading a similar book, but with different characters.
I felt more like I was hearing the voices of Bix and Carin instead of Tameth and Alaan. I love the introduction of Kanoe and can't wait to read his story. I just hope he has his own voice, his own phrases and his own actions.
So while I didn't love book 2 as much as book 1, I didn't hate it and look forward to book 3. This is the second in a series by the author. I believe she has the 3rd out in e-book form, too. This was a wonderful book because both characters were very strong. But what I really enjoyed about this book was how tough the heroine was! I don't think the woman has to be tough etc. all the time but I do like when the heroine stands up to the hero and doesn't let him walk all over her. In this book the hero is in hot pursuit (once he finally realizes what a good thing she is) and the heroine makes him work for it! Very feisty! It doesn't hurt that author writes a great story has very evil villians and some suprising twists that threw me. (I have to admit this is rare, since I read a lot!) This is a wonderful paranormal romance, I bought the e-book and as soon as I found out if came out in print..well I bought it from Amazon. So it made a big impression on me. I am eager to get the next book in the series... I give this book 3.5 stars. It is not for the faint of heart. I loved the lead characters but was taken aback towards the end. Let's just say that it has an unexpected ending (still a happy one for everyone though). The female and male leads are meant for each other. Some of the "love scenes" were a bit much for me and I have read many. I am very interested in the third installment because the first book of this series was off the chain!!! i read both of her books and enjoyed each one, can not wait for her next one. For two Seekers of justice, hunting rogues is dangerous business. But not as dangerous as their yearning for each other. There's a rogue on the loose, and the Vampire Council of Ethics has just the man for the job. Alaan Serati, along with his team of elite fighters, is a Seeker for the V.C.O.E. The lethal vampire law enforcement assassin is also the most eligible bachelor of Clan Serati. His job: Take out the rogue vampire who killed his mate years ago. But working with a fellow Seeker quickly becomes a pain in his backside. How is he supposed to accomplish the mission if he can't keep his mind or his hands off of his fellow officer? For more years than she wants to remember, Tameth Serati-Cole has worked almost every day, side by side, with the gruff and gorgeous Alaan. It's been hell considering the special bond between them, something rarely developed between mates. But Alaan doesn't really want her. He's still pining away for the woman taken from him years ago. So when he declares his need to bond with her, this lady Seeker ain't biting-even if she's wanted to since the day they met. (Another beauty by my favourite author......)
(Perfect!)
(Your's in the ranks of death) This book has all the makings of a very good plot and could have been very gripping if it had not been slowed down by all the prose and flowery descriptions of scenery etc. These were all beautifully written but to me slowed the story down to the point where I could not finish the book. Once again, I find it totally unrealistic to believe that a man who only sees a woman a couple times could fall so madly in love with her so as to endure all that this couple went through. I guess am too much of a realist to really enjoy novels of this type. This is the first of Ann Radcliffes novels that I have read...and it wont be the last. I love the trials each character goes through whether they are paired together or seemingly seperated for eternity. The determination of Vivaldi to be with Ellena is amazing. I felt every angle of that from absolute glee to despair. There are a couple of twists that in a way I thought I should have expected (of course due to the type of books and the time period it was written in) but was still pleasantly surprised. Recommended. I have a particular love for Mysteries of Udolpho, but The Italian is another wonderful book. I read it in one day, and couldn't put it down. The only sad part about it, is there is so few books of hers to read!
A must read for gothic literature! Timely delivery...and I saved money by buying here than at the campus book store!
I discovered Ann Radcliffe's 'The Italian', like another reviewer, after having read 'The Monk'. And while I had hoped for another similarly twisting, winding, gothic thriller, this was not the case with 'The Italian'.
The opening pages seem to purport the reveal of the tale of the Black Penitents, as the story opens with a group of travelers seeing a shadowy, diabolical figure lurking in the shadows of a church.
But what follows is more of a tale of 'star-crossed lovers', leaning a bit more toward Romeo and Juliette. Vivaldi, the hero of this tale, pursues the affections of the orphaned Ellena Di Rosalba, much to the chagrin of his mother, the Marchesa Vivaldi. She employs the aide of her confessor, Father Schedoni, to separate the young lovers.
Ellena is spirited away to a convent, which Vivaldi breaks her out of, and here the tale becomes at least a bit more complex, as Vivaldi is subsequently imprisoned for his actions; as Ellena is marked for death in her new surroundings; and the Marchesa struggles to keep them forever apart.
In comparison to 'The Monk', which you find in Amazon's list of 'people who read this book also read' listing...this tale is in no way as dark, gothic, or 'thrilling' a read. Though enjoyable, the story doesn't fit the opening pages and the foreshadowing of the 'diabolical figure' seeking refuge in the church to avoid death, the mysterious 'Black Penitents' named...or any of the intrigue with which the book opens.
Still, in comparison to modern 'thrillers'; this book is paced well, plotted nicely, and comes to a logical conclusion. While I did not find the story I anticipated, it is still worth a read. First published in 1797, The Italian is one of the finest examples of Gothic romance. The fast-paced, narrative centres on Ann Radcliffe's most brilliant creation, the sinister monk Schedoni, whose past is shrouded in mystery.
From the novel's opening chapters the reader is ushered into a shadowy world in which crime and religion are mingled. In the church of Santa Maria del Pianto in Naples, Ellena Rosalba and Vincentio di Vivaldi first meet; but their love is ill-omened. Leagued against them are the proud and ambitious Marchese di Vivaldi and her confessor Father Schedoni. When Ellena vanishes on the death of her guardian, Vivaldi sets out in pursuit of her across the mountainous regions of southern Italy before himself falling prey to the Holy Inquisition.
This revised and expanded edition explores the novel in the context of British attitudes to Italy and Roman Catholicism in the late eighteenth century with close attention to the novel's style and form. Rerations < The Italian (Oxford World's Classics) >
