customer 's review (Good movie, Grainy on Blu-ray)
(The Blu Warrior!!! A visual treat!!! Incredible stuntwork!!!)
(Great blu-ray transfer)
(A movie worth revisiting! HD transfer very good)
(The Road Warrior: a New Hero Mystique is Born) The title says it all here folks. I've been a long time fan of this series (and by series, I mean 'Mad Max' and 'The Road Warrior', not that abortion of a movie 'Max Max beyond Thunderdome'). Anyway, this is the Australian release titled 'Mad Max 2', not 'The Road Warrior', so it has a slightly different intro, and they do refer to Mel's character as Max, not as the 'man with no name' like they did in the U.S. version.
Not a lot in the way of extras here. The picture is very grainy when viewed in hi-def. Not anything you can do about it; it was a limitation of the time since it wasn't filmed in hi-def. Still, the film looks good despite it's age and the sound is good. If you don't have it on DVD, you can certainly pick it up in that format cheaper than this was ($13).
BTW, if you haven't seen Mad Max, I'd recommend it as it schools you as to why he's mad (angry, not crazy). This is the best that Mad Max 2 has ever looked!!! This is a great Blu Ray title!!! Great soundtrack too!!! Extras are a bit skimpy but that's fine because it's in anamorphic widescreen and is a visual treat, with truly awesome stunts,no CGI effects here, just raw stuntwork at it's best!!! A true classic!!! A+ The Road Warrior is one of those rare beasts. A sequel that surpasses the original. There are many things that make this movie great. It's a post apocalyptic western. The hero barely speaks throughout the film. The excellent chase scene in the last half hour. The brilliant stunts. The dialogue. The tension of not knowing what will happen next. And a great set of bad guys. The list goes on and on. And thankfully it transfers on to blu-ray exceptionally well. I spotted all kinds of things I'd never noticed before and I've seen this film plenty. Really worth buying on blu-ray. The movie itself really doesn't need much said about it, but I forgot high this title set the bar. I actually own the HD-DVD version, but this Blu-Ray version is basically identical. Considering the age of the movie, the transfer looks great. Far better production quality versus the DVD releases. There were details in the video that I had completely overlooked. Don't expect the big Lucasarts style soundtrack, but the audio quality is good enough to get the job done. A great movie with a powerful and relevant political message to share with today's generation - if for no better reason to admire what was achieved in this movie without CGI effects. Road gangs rule the wastelands in the post-apocalyptic aftermath of civilization's finale. The most valued commodities: oil, gasoline, cars and guns. Mel Gibson stars as the now iconic Mad Max--the quiet wandering scavenger, humankind's mysterious last hero. The plot is simple: The Road Warrior must decide between escape or to stay and defend the peaceful gasoline making tribe from the tyranny of a wasteland gang.
As each action scene is skillfully 'wiped' to the next the tension builds and the dramatic quality of the theme is rooted. The question is: Can these people escape the wasteland and journey toward the rumored last haven of civilized humankind? Or will they be hunted down, raped and murdered like animals by the whim of gang rule.
Despite the gruesome action and sometimes campy dialogue, the theme of the film is complex: the right to one's own life. This is portrayed in the conflict between the producer tribe and the thieving gang; the creators vs. the destroyers; and Max walks the the middle line as an individual standing against tyranny, the defender of that right to life (his own), and of that dream of a better place. Max can't escape his past as a policeman, as a arbiter of justice, but can he escape the gang's brutality and live to scavenge another day?
Through Max we identify with the fight against tyranny in defense of a future for humanity, and as we do, a new hero mystique is born: that of the brooding and cunning last remnant of humankind's ideals. Also, a warning rises to the surface of this film; a warning about gang rule and human corruption and where that may lead us. A strong candidate for the designation of most thrilling action movie ever made (the turbo-charged exhilaration of its full-throttle highway chases has never been equaled), the second part of George Miller's post-apocalyptic trilogy is also a magnificently imagined movie myth. Like theStar Warstrilogy (by that other George) theMad Maxfilms draw their inspiration from the works of mythologist Joseph Campbell. In the 1979 original, Max (Mel Gibson) is a policeman, the last guardian of civilization and order in a devastated world reduced to chaos. But when a leather-clad gang of sadomasochistic speed demons mows down Max's family, his remaining connections to humanity are also permanently severed. After brutally exacting his revenge, Max wanders off into the wasteland alone, "a burned out shell of a man" who (to paraphraseThe Searchers) is destined to wander forever between the winds. InThe Road Warrior, Max rediscovers a sliver of his shattered humanity, and a spark of redemption, when he helps an embattled colony of pioneers fight off the savages who are after that most precious of all commodities: "guzzline." Max is transformed into a legendary hero, just as Mel Gibson was catapulted to international movie stardom. With its final stirring images,The Road Warriortranscends its genre (whatever that may be--science fiction? Western? action adventure?) and becomes something timeless. It's a great movie.--Jim Emerson A strong candidate for the designation of most thrilling action movie ever made (the turbo-charged exhilaration of its full-throttle highway chases has never been equaled), the second part of George Miller's post-apocalyptic trilogy is also a magnificently imagined movie myth. customer 's review (Idiot Control Now)
("Meanwhile, back in movie 'A' . . .")
(my kids' hilarious intro to MST3K!)
(Potatoes!)
(Good? He's the Best!) 5/5
This my friend, is a very funny episode of MST3K. While the movie itself is a very crappy E.T. ripoff, this episode rocked! I know Juan Piquer Simon (The movie's director) originally wanted this to be a horror film and not an E.T. ripoff. I happen to own Pieces, another Juan Piquer Simon Movie. I loved it when Joel and the 'Bots sang Idiot Control Know and I also liked the Trumpy Does Magic Things segment. Recommended This turkey is a perfect example of an unwatchable movie made endearing by the MST3K treatment. I tend to favor the Mike episodes, but in this Joel effort, he and the Bot's were right on their game.
The story is about aliens which crash on earth and lay some eggs. One of them, in the possession of a boy, hatches and he now has a new friend. A low budget "ET" ripoff, pathetically executed. (I thought Joel and company missed an opportunity to ridicule the absurd and unexplainable British accent that the boy spoke with).
Lots of disjointed subplots (poachers, a dorky family rock band). Cheesy looking aliens. Disorienting editing. Much fertile MST3K source material.
In the Mystery Science Theater world, this is a 5 star film.
Additionally, if I may use this review to make a general MST3K comment ---During the past couple of weeks, I have worked my way through a stack of Mystery Science videos, watching one during most evenings. I finally ran out and went to plug in an Outer Limits DVD last night, and, I had the strange sensation that I was going to have to watch the show "alone". I then realized that watching the MST3K films was kind of like going to the movies with friends . . . witty, entertaining friends that I could place on pause when necessary, and then store back in my bookcase before turning into bed. If I can stop chuckling long enough to steady my hand, I'll be able to write this review. The "movie" being mocked never rises above that cheesy camcorder-on-a-weekend feel. As one of the bots jeered, "this movie has more fog than the movie "Fog!" They were so right to say that the "plot" kept shifting from "movie A" to "movie B" ... up to "movie D" for dumb!
At the beginning you'll meet the "stars" singing some sort of 60s-a-go-go as background for a pointless and scratchy male singer. Bang! We now have characters, plot (I hope you caught it) and [heh heh] soon-to-be victims! Turn it up baby, it's doesn't get any better! Actually, it was the only way this "B-flat movie" could inject enough victims to get picked off by the space invaders. Fear not, we move swiftly from that dork recording studio into the wild outdoors, where aliens have, of course, just landed.
Oh, and don't worry about the tall green alien with the sunglasses that you see during the opening credits. You never see him again. I guess the writer forgot that loose end, amidst all of his other troubles.
And hey, I hate to pop your bubble, but there ain't no pods in this movie! And the lip-sync is off soooooo badly, that my 10-year-old daughter had to imitate it all movie long! Our shadowy commentors made us laugh so hard that I got a headache and had to keep wiping tears of shock off my cheeks!
Late in this shameless production, the boy-star (maybe it was his camcorder that they used to make this thing) shouts that he hates his elephant-nosed friend -- for no apparent reason. (Of course this is while the rock-singer-turned-camper looks on, and mysteriously has his first moment of compassion as he listens in, and then we realize that he is about 100 yards away... and don't forget the fog and woods blocking his view! Dang, this movie is BAD!) Anyway, the bots' comment about the little kid (mind you, people have been killed all movie long) is "Wow, this kid has mood swings. That's not good!"
At the end, our comedy trio says what we are all thinking --- "Let's get outta here!" This MST3K episode is hilarious! I really do recommend buying this. I agree, this is my favorite Joel episode I have seen so far. You won't be disappointed! Probably the funniest MST3K available so far from Rhino. A horrendously bad movie (it does have a plot at least), great skits and songs from Joel and the Bots.
If you don't own it, get it. If you already own, get another, they're small. Rerations < Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Pod People >

customer 's review (Supernatural Fantasy for Kids)
(DRIVEL!)
(Really cool German horror fantasy.)
(Joey and the Imaginary World (Includes Plot Points))
(R.I.P. - O.F.F.) On the surface Making Contact seems like a horror movie for kids, and it works well on that level, with plenty of special effects, and not too scary. It has an interesting basic idea, about a boy who makes contact with his late father by phone. He comes into telekinetic powers, and later finds a scary ventriloquist's dummy in an abanoned house who tells him the voice on the phone isn't his father, but an evil entity to be avoided. But should you really believe a scary ventriloquist's dummy? Similar ideas were used in later films like White Noise and others.
The film is underrated for specific reasons. It tries to be more of a fantasy of the genre that deals with near-death or after-death experiences (Heaven Can Wait, The Dust Factory, etc.) than just a horror film, but this makes the plot seem uneven. Some scenes seem like deliberate imitations of Spielberg and other horror films. However, some clever and stirring moments shine through, particularly the ending. Other horror movies with child protagonists include Thirteen Ghosts, The Lady In White, and Sixth Sense. In terms of special effects alone, Making Contact has more to offer that these; but the others are scarier and more enjoyable to adults.
I recommend this film more to fans of films like Dragonfly and Just Like Heavan than people who want to be seriously frightened. Somewhere between 'Pippi Longstocking' [yes, this one does have animated braids ala Barrymore], 'Sorry, wrong number' [that would have been cool], and the regular tribe"E.T.", 'Poltergeist', 'Close Encounters' and perhaps even the maglined"MAGIC"[what a cacophonous opening night in Hollywood that was way back] - lies this little sleeping gem of a ripoff .... lucking our director moved on to bigger and better things [if we forgive"Godzilla"] ... but this little flaunt?NAH! only really GOOD THING is the somewhat obscure German actress playing mutti [mama] - quite a find back then - Dietrich before the implants! Things have been strange for Joey (Joshua Morrell) since his father's death! he's been given telepathic and telekinetic abilities that allows him to make his toys come to life and can contact with his dead father on a toy phone. He's an unpopular kid at school because he tells him his secret but they laugh at him especially the local bullies and has only one friend, one day he walks his pet toy robot (whom looks like one of the robots from "The Black Hole") that's alive into an old house in his neighborhood and discovers a ventriloquist dummy (whom looks like Col. Clink from "Hogan's Heroes") to add it to his toy collection. It later turns out the dummy is possessed by a demon with powers similar to Joey's only more stronger and threatens Joey, his mother, friends and the city with demons from another dimension for Joey is the only one to stop it.
An entertaining, dark and cool supernatural horror fantasy from Germany and director Roland Emmerich who gave us "Stargate", "The Patriot", "Independence Day" and "The Day After Tommorow". It's labeled as a kid's movie but it's kind of dark and scary for small children, i remembered when i was young back in the 80's watching this on video it scared the hell out of me especially with that dummy and the second movie to cause my fear of dummies when i was young besides "Magic". The special effects are very good for it's time considering this is a foreign movie, there's also a bittersweet ending to this movie and if you want a movie to scare your kids then this could be it, and the music score on both versions are very good as well.
This 2-Disc DVD set contains both the cut dubbed American version from "New World Pictures" and the uncut full length German language with English Subtitles version and the only extras there are is trailers but the sound and picture are quite good on both versions.

MAKING CONTACT, perhaps more properly called JOEY in Germany, tells a magical fable about a boy named Joey Collins. As the story begins, Joey is a lonely nine-year-old whose beloved father has just died. One night, while mourning the loss of his father, Joey is surprised when his many toys and games begin to move around his room. This is how Joey's adventure begins. The devastating death of his father has also somehow awakened in Joey a strange power that allows him to communicate with and sometimes even control the forces and energies of an unseen world. Suddenly, incredible events begin to unfold that defy conventional explanation. A simple toy robot seems to come to life, and only Joey can understand the machine's chirps and whistles. It tells him that its name is Charlie. As an old toy telephone begins to ring in Joey's room, phones all across his beach community ring as well. In answering that call, Joey hears a voice that claims to be his deceased father contacting him from beyond the grave. Joey's world becomes one of magic and wonder, and he is so overwhelmed by it all that he is eager and willing to believe the voice is who he thinks it is without much thought on the matter. But Joey's surprise and joy over his newfound abilities eventually give way to fear, doubt and even outright terror. His loving mother first thinks his abilities, especially his telekinesis (the power to move objects without touching them), are only possible as the results of some schoolyard tricks. Most of the other children at school refuse to believe in his abilties, either, or that he is the intended recipient of the strange phone calls that have plagued the community. His teacher thinks he's suffering deep psychological traumas and needs professional help. He is only trying to help the troubled Joey, but how can he believe that Joey is talking to his dead father on the telephone? Only one girl in Joey's class at school even tries to be his friend after seeing the troubles he has, but Joey is shy after losing his father. Still, he seems pleased when she reacts in a positive way about his use of his telekinetic abilities. Joey's mistreatment at the hands of the neighbor kids is a reaction of fear. They don't understand his claims, nor do they really comprehend his powers. Their fears are understandable, but no less hurtful to Joey. Joey ends up needing all the allies he can find, though, because these are only the beginning of Joey's troubles. On a walk with Charlie, Joey decides to use his friend's diminutive size to help him explore a nearby derilect house that once belonged to an aged ventriloquist. But the house holds many sinister secrets from the past. The ventriloquist's dummy is as alive as Joey's robot. More importantly, though, the dummy seems threatening, as malevolent toward Joey as Charlie is friendly. Worse for Joey, the dummy claims to know the source of Joey's powers and the origins of the phone calls. Are the calls really coming from Joey's father, or from some unknown force from the other world trying to trick the boy? What is the true nature of Joey's mysterious gift? Before the answers are known, Joey will become the center of a conflict over his life and his destiny. Will he bring his wonderful gifts to the world, or will he come under the control of a terrible evil? Now that I've told you a little about the story, I'd like to comment on the actual movie. If you don't want any of the film's secrets ruined for you, stop reading this review! I go into specific details about some of the plot points of the film from here onward, so you've been warned! MAKING CONTACT, finally available on DVD, comes courtesy of Anchor Bay Entertainment. This package contains both the German and American releases of the film and you'll want to watch them both. Be sure to check out the differences in the dialogue between the two. Several scenes interpret the story in slightly different ways and can help make sense of some of the film's mysteries on another viewing. The film has been criticized by some for "stealing" ideas from other films. However, a more careful examination of the film should show that this isn't a fair thing to say without understanding some major points from the story. Joey's powers come from his ability to tap into an imaginary world. When a person comes into contact with that world, they will see images from themselves and also imaginary things that come from things the person has seen or heard, like that person's greatest heroes or darkest fears. It is only natural that a boy of nine, given this power, would use his magical gift to recreate things he has seen in movies and television. Furthermore, the elements from other sources all receive very affectionate credit. Roland Emmerich appears to want to make it clear that these elements come from other movies and shows. Would someone who was trying to "steal" from RETURN OF THE JEDI include bedsheets that show the title of the movie and characters from that movie? Would that person include pictures and toys from that movie? A more accurate statement might be that this film includes playful references that reflect things you might see in a typical child's imaginative play. The references aren't mean-spirited, sarcastic, sardonic or insincere. A child gifted with the power to make his imagination real would most likely include characters from STAR WARS, and he might want a friend like E.T. in his life, especially if he were as lonely as Joey is. Finally, a word of caution: this film deals with elements of death and loss. Children who have recently lost a relative may find it hard to handle. But for those who are willing to let their preconceived ideas about what a movie has to be, what special effects have to be, what a story has to be... welcome to Joey's unforgettable world. I hope you enjoy your visit as much as I have over the years. Between E.T., Poltergeist, and yes Star Wars, this movie had nothing original to it! And I'm not just talking about the plot, I'm talking lighting effects, camera angles.......And I also found myself dozing off more than once during this movie.
If you liked this movie, I recomend: Watching something better, like E.T. or Star Wars or something like that. What I learned from "Making Contact": Dummies are frickin scary...o wait, I already knew that. Rerations < Making Contact >

(Love Hellboy)
(Not as good as Sword Of Storms)
(Better than Sword of Storms)
(Animated Hellboy) Hellboy-Blood and Iron is second animated feature in the Hellboy Animated series. The story goes a little something like this... In 1939, a young Professor Broom destroyed Erzsebet Ondrushko, a vampiress who bathed in the blood of innocents to stay young after selling her soul to the Queen of Witches, the goddess Hecate. Flash forward to today, a haunting in the Hamptons, on Long Island, is brought to the BPRD's attention. Broom decides to investigate it himself taking Liz, Abe, and Hellboy himself with him&a new BPRD member named Sydney Leach who is actually a human metal detector who has never seen any action in the field. Upon getting there, they meet a vulgar millionaire hoping to cash in on the supernatural angle, he's filled the house with relics of "Blood Countess" Erzsebet Ondrusko (based on the 16th century Hungarian noblewoman Elizebeth Bathory). They soon find out that it is really haunted and the gang tackles all types of beasties. The storyline, itself, is based on the "Wake the Devil" storyline from the original comics.
It was written by Tad Stone and Mike Mignola and directed by Victor Cook and Tad Stone. Vocal talents were provided by: Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, John Hurt, Jim Cummings, Rob Paulson, J. Grant Albrecht, Cree Summer, James Arnold Taylor, Grey Delisle, Kath Soucie, and DeeDee Rescher.
I'll admit, I liked this feature alot more than the last. I guess it is because it deals with the subjects of Vampires. In some ways, this feature is alot better...especially in tone and subject matter. Although, it still lacks that darker feel of the original books. "The Amazing Screw-On Head" feature was closer to Mignola's style and feel of the comics than this. At any rate, I liked it. However, I feel this may only appeal to hardcore animation or Hellboy fans.
Course, after seeing these animated features, I wonder why there hasn't been an animated series on TV. My nephews really loved the cartoons so I know it would appeal to their age set. I'm a huge Hellboy fan. I love the books, the movies are amazing and the animated DVD's are tons of fun. Blood and Iron is visually amazing with art work done by Cheeks Gallow. If your a hellboy fan you will love this DVD. With the latest Hellboy movie just hit UK cinemas, to gear up for it, I watched Blood&Iron. Although it's more a prequel, as it still features Professor Broom, voiced by John Hurt. (Thankfully, for fans of John Hurt, he appears in a flashback in Hellboy II.)
The whole myths and legends featured in the animated movies are excellent, and I look forward to seeing more of them. The creatures are amazing, and come to life on the screen. I prefer the live action movies, but the animated ones are always worthwhile watching, and I'm sure there are bound to be more of them. There are a lot of Hellboy comics out there, with lots of ideas to hit Hellboy fans.
The story centres around the Hellboy team, and Erzebet Ondrushko, a female vampire, who in order to stay young and beautiful, bathed in the bloods of innocents to stay young. The elderly Professor Broom decides he must investigate it himself, without revealing too much to his team. Someone is attempting to bring her back - that's never a good sign. Hellboy, Liz and Abe are more worried about his welfare than the return of a vampire. They face ghosts, a ghostly wolf pack, witches, a giant werewolf, and the famous Erzebet herself.
The destiny card is played, a card that is also played in Golden Army, when he battles Queen of Witches, goddess Hecate. She wants him to embrace his true destiny, a destiny that includes the destruction of man kind. This 'destiny' must be a strong feature in the comics as well, and it makes me curious to find out what is actually supposed to happen.
The humour is very dry, as it is in the films, and although Liz's character still annoys me as she did in Sword of Storms (she seems to have a nose piercing, although I think it's just the way her nose is drawn), it still brings a few smiles to faces.
Overall, nothing can really compare to the live action movies, but I did prefer Sword of Storms, with the Japanese mythology, to this. It's still good to watch, and emerse yourself in everything Hellboy. The first animated Hellboy movie wasn't bad but I didn't like the Japanese mythology and I felt like Big Red should have had a more accessible story after the 2004 movie. Blood and Iron keeps the action in America (with the exception of a few flashbacks) and focuses on a haunted house.
The BRPD are assigned to a case involving a mysterious mansion in the Hamptons where spirit Erzsebet Ondrushko (based on Elizabeth Bathory, the legendary Blood Countess), defeated by Professor Broom in the early 40s, plots her own resurrection after selling her soul to Hecate, the queen of the witches. The Professor joins HB, Liz and Abe (clearly this is set before the movie) in solving the case so he can finally put the Blood Countess out of action forever.
The humor is as dry as ever and the animation would shame both traditionally animated shows and all the modern 3D CGI rubbish. I wish all animation could look this good without having to resort to the ugly aesthetics experimented with in Batman Gotham Knight [Blu-ray] or Highlander - The Search for Vengeance (Animated).
With so many Hellboy graphic novels out there these animated movies could go on for ages if they were to base their stories on them. Blood and Iron itself is based on the 'Wake the Devil' storyline from the comics. It's far superior to modern cartoons. And what's with the 15-rating in the UK?
The DVD is in very nice-looking 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby 5.1 sound. There are loads of extras including an animated short called Iron Shoes. I recently watched this movie and I love Hellboy and read the comics myself. This movie is good if you DON'T know your mythology or well, paganism. It basically made witchcraft, witches, and Hecate really really bad. Hecate would have never made any deals with vampire queens or anything evil, she is the goddess of witchcraft but she is also the goddess of protection of the newly born, and the household. I wish they did their research on the Triple Goddess, witchcraft, and Hecate before making this movie. Yes those two "witches" mentioned the Tripe Goddess.
I am pagan myself so I was slightly insulted by the "hollywoodized" view of witchcraft.
Truly that was my only problem with the movie, which is why I give it 3 stars because it was well animated, well written, and the voice acting was great. It was just those mistakes above that bothered me. But hey, it's a movie.
Do watch it though if you like Hellboy. Studio: Starz/sphe Release Date: 06/03/2008 Run time: 75 minutes Rating: Nr In some ways,Blood and Ironcaptures more of graphic novelist Mike Mignola's original vision than Guillermo del Toro's lackluster feature did in 2004. Hellboy, the demon brought into this world by the Nazis, but raised by "Professor Broom" to fight for good, was conceived as a drawing, not an actor buried under make-up and latex. The story, which incorporates elements from Mignola's "Wake the Devil" collection, sends Hellboy, Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and Prof. Broom to the haunted mansion of a vulgar millionaire. Hoping to cash in on the supernatural angle, he's filled the house with relics of "Blood Countess" Erzsebet Ondrusko (based on the 16th century Hungarian noblewoman Elizebeth Bathory), whom Prof. Broom defeated in 1939. It's really haunted, and the gang tackles harpies, ghosts, witches, werewolves, vampires, and the goddess Hecate. The key actors from the live action film repeat their roles as voices: Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Selma Blair (Liz), Doug Jones (Abe), and John Hurt (Broom). Perlman makes a suitably underplayed Hellboy, growling his annoyance at everything from a bad donut to a vicious blow from the iron-clad goddess. The limits of the animation would be less problematic if the direction were more dynamic. Tad Stones and Victor Cook don't get the needed power out of the action sequences, especially the prolonged battle between Hellboy and Hecate. It would be interesting to see what a talented director like Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Ruruoni Kenshin) or Hiroyuki Okiura (Jin-Roh) would do with this material.Blood and Ironwill appeal to some "Hellboy" fans, but it lacks the dark panache of the original books. (Better when I understood how Rob works)
(Ode to the classics)
(All in all this is not a bad movie)
(Possibly The Most Evil Film Of All Time) A great first start for Rob Zombie. I was waiting for this for years and finally saw it a couple of times in the theater. A can't miss for horror/slag fans! The first time I saw House Of 1000 Corpses, I was left more disoriented and confused than entertained. It wasn't until I saw the sequel and got into Rob Zombie's entire world - his music, his music videos, his own taste in films, that I "got it" and it all clicked into place. Once that happened, the film was a lot more entertaining.
The entire thing is a mishmash of homages to black and white horror films, psychedelic nightmares and horror history. The story is simple, but Rob presents it in his own wonderfully messed up way, turning it into something a lot more surreal, vulgar, unique and entertaining than most of your standard horror films.
Before he mastered it, Rob showed a knack at making unsympathetic, distasteful and funny characters. They're so filthy and quirky in every and all ways that you never know what the heck is coming next, and it makes for some memorably corny dialogue and a few great suprises along the way. In a traditionally cinematic sense, the film is a complete trainwreck. It has no subtleties, and there is no great acting moment or inspired writing.
If you're looking for a special and unique horror experience, look no further. This is Rob's very own freakshow, spawned from centuries of b-movie cinema and all the classic rock you can handle. It's crazy, so check your sanity at the door and enjoy the ride. Blu-Ray transfer was solid. No complaints.
The movie is good if you like 70's style horror. I think it pays homage to some of the classics well. At its heart it is a horror movie with some plot holes but who watches horror for the story? OK, first off I would like to say that if your like me and don't like watching horror films where the bad guys win, none of them die, and they all kill everyone like they did in the movies "Rest Stop" and "No Country For Old Men". I would very, very, highly, higly reccomend seeing this movie then the Devils Rejects (sequal to this movie) one after the other.
Now on to my review of this movie. It was good, but not geat and it wasn't near as good as Rob Zombies version of Halloween. His is so much better then John Carpenter's and it would be nice to also see Rob Zombie do a remake of the second Halloween. House of A Thousand Corpses is basically a movie about this medical assistant or actual doctor known as doctor (Oatis) Saiten who would torcher people to death. Then after Dr. Saiten got fired he torchered people to death some where along the road and placed their corpses in this tree. And the setting of the movie is about 1978. In this movie a group of people writing a book about road side attractions lead by Bill (played by Rainn Wilson (best known as Dwight Schrude from the hit citcom "The Office") stumble on a road side gas station with a Murder ride. After Bill and the travelers take this Murder ride, they learn about a tree of death where Dr. Saiten used to torchure people to death after he had his Physicians lisense revoked. Later Bill and Co. find out that Dr. Saitin is really a person named Otis who uses his family to pull people off the road so both he and his family can have their fun torchuring them. All in all I thought this movie was very realistic, and had great costumes (something Robert Zombie is exceptionally good at), but I thought the movie could have used a bit more kills. And for that reason this movie gets 2 1/2 stars.
And on my final note, I would like to say that the movie is titles "House of A Thousand Corpses", because the house Otis, his sister and his parents live in has 1,000 dead torchered corpses in it. Rob Zombie brings the viewer thru a series of camp and silliness in the first part of the film, almost a teenage slasher flick. And, somewhere along the middle, becomes one of the most unsettling films you'll ever view. Inplied and visual evil are successfully transposed to the screen by first time director and writer Rob Zombie. Equally good score by Rob Zombie, and a exceptional role as the evil sister by Zombie's wife, Sheri Moon.
