(Bad Slasher film!)
『I am a big fan of alot of 80's slasher films. This is one I had not seen and was eager to check it out. (Very well done forgotten slasher)
『My first exposure to this movie was back in 1981 when I saw the tail end of it at my friend's house. His sister was watching it when I walked into the room. I remember seeing the birthday cake and its lit candles and Melissa Sue Anderson singing, "Happy Birthday...to me" to herself. That's an image I haven't forgotten. This is one of those horror movies that will stay with you. Even though it was just the ending I saw, it sparked a curiosity to see it in its entirety.

This movie was very well done. Good acting, a good score, good makeup, good special effects, and above all, a good story. This movie stars Melissa Sue Anderson (Mary Ingalls from Little House On The Prairie). A lot of people can't believe she did a horror film. I can. It was a chance for her to shed her clean "Little House" image and enter the twentieth century - and in a horror film, no less. She drops a few swear words, drops her underpants, and gives one great performance as Ginny, a new student at Crawford Academy. She wants to be accepted amongst the popular people at her school. A number of these people end up being killed. But who is the killer? This movie will keep you guessing all the way through as to who the killer is. This movie is a horror mystery, basically. It has a lot of twists and turns. Ginny had been involved in a serious accident in the past that required brain surgery, so her mental state and lack of memeory could explain her fellow students' disappearances and murders. Ginny thinks she is the one who's killing her friends. She's lost her mind and can't remember very much. Ginny's 18th birthday is days away. What kind of birthday party will she have? Watch to find out.

This movie has certain elements to it that remind me of other horror movies, such as Carrie, Halloween, and Friday The 13th. Yet, it is very unique in itself. During the late seventies and early eighties there was a flood of horror movies that were imitations of Halloween, and a lot of them made holidays or special occasions dangerous, just like Halloween made Halloween night dangerous in Haddonfield, New Jersey. Some of these movies were My Bloody Valentine, April Fools Day, Silent Night Deadly Night, New Years Evil, Happy Birthday To Me, Friday The 13th, Prom Night, etc. Actually, Black Christmas (1974) was the first holiday horror movie. But Happy Birthday To Me is strong and stands apart from some of the low budget slashers or slasher movies with bad acting, such as Friday The 13th Parts I and II, for example. This movie has depth, whereas some of the above mentioned movies lack depth. This movie also stars the legendary Glenn Ford, Lawrence Dane, Sharon Acker, Frances Hyland, Tracy Bregman, and Lisa Langlois. I don't want to give away too much of the movie. You'll have to see it to solve the mystery.

If you want to see a well done slasher film from the golden age of horror films, then Happy Birthday To Me is highly recommended.』

(Wow, better than I expected it to be.)
『I picked this movie up, having read some decent things about it online. Most of my experience with old slasher flicks is that they are filled with exceptionally bad acting, so I was pleasantly surprised that all around the acting was pretty good. The quality of the picture was also far better than I've come to expect when watching older horror films, so that was a nice surprise as well. I felt like I was watching a more recent movie the whole time. The plot is good enough to pull you in, but the twists it takes keep you guessing until the end, even if at some points you think you understand what is going on. I got a great deal on this DVD and thought I was paying a nice cheap price for what would be an ok movie, and instead I got a great one. The makers of this one really got it right!』

(where's the dvd?)
『Come on, this is a stop motion aficionado's delight. Some of Jim Danforth's effects work is superlative. Warner's, do us all a favour and give this dino epic an official release!』

(So that's how you spell AKITA.)
『I just finished this movie, it's rewound, so lets get to it. First of all I like all of these cavemen movies and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth and One Million B.C. are the two top ones. Set in the time before earth had a moon--I guess this is before both man and dinosaur were supposed to have existed. And yes, is the typical story of all blonds being kept around for sacrifice only...why else do you think there are so few?

Looking at the SUN zealot it kind of makes me wonder if he was impotent...afterall, if you look at the first three sacrifices, I think I could have found much more to do with them than toss'm into the drink.

PROS:

1. The music goes fine with this movie kind of letting you know our humble past but always aspiring forward and upward.

2. Special effects, fine.

3. Monsters fine. These guys took some time to make a dinosaur. A combination of stop and go anim., and real lizards dress up.

4. Cuties are all cuties--no star there of course.

5. Now lets get to some of the meat of the movie. Other reviewers laugh and scoff at these sudden storms and other bad weather so let me fill you in on something. In the opening scenes, while the three cuties are about to be tossed off the cliff...everybody looks up at the sun and so does the camera and zealot. It changes size and shape, the wind picks up to storm level and waves are created with white caps. Well, in my opinion this is supposed to be caused by an off shore, over the horizon, volcanic explosion. Probably a cleaner explosion than most--near the top of the volcano. Volcanic gas spews out and a moment or two later the top of the volcano explodes. The gas screws up the sun light and the 'slow blow' explosion stirs up the air.

six. Storm scenes with people in the water are fine. Well done and appear to been shot outside in the real ocean.

7. I think the zealot is also some sort of warlord. He throws a lot of orders around in the movie, people get killed, nobody back talks him. but during the funeral I have to say as he looked to heaven his eyes were crossed--hmmm, just pretending to pray.

8. Yes, if you listen and pay attention, the language does seem to have some rudimentry meaning. My opinion is the language has few words with many meanings. You take that Akita! word for instance. Everybody seems to use it and know what it means. It has three consonents (did I spell that right?) and therefore comes from three different words. You would think these guys had a lot of one word sentences. I reckon if you said more than five words you were considered long winded.

9. Interesting story line. One of the blond bombs escapes sacrifice and this is the story of her escaping the zealot and the zealot tracking her down no matter how far away she runs or how many people he gets kills finding her. After all, if he doesn't find and kill her the sun will never return to normal. This is a fine story line and it works.

10. Another interesting possibilitly is the people the blond take up with seem to either ignore the sun's change or else that is why they are throwing that dance party later in the afternoon. If I were a caveman I think dancing around a lot would work better than..."Akita, oodalla, neikro!" This means "Uh oh, the sun's spazing out. There's a cutie to sacrifice. Well, that's it for her!"

11. There are indeed a couple of subplots here. Basically they are a fine addition to the story. I won't go into detail here...oh yes, I heard that the brunette--who was the leading man's woman--was a 'miss hotty' in Europe when this was shot. She supposed to have been their 'Scarlet O'Hara' at the time of this film.

12. Yes, the swimsuits are small. On the cutties they look 'real' small.

13. Victoria Vetri is the lead female and believe it or not I did detect some acting--watch her face...to. The only brown eyed blond I ever seen...afterall cavewomen have not yet discovered hair dye yet.

14. Jumping close to the end of the movie...you remember that volcano I was telling you about that they never showed on camera? And the several other times it either blots out, changes the shape of, or disfigures the sun...well its about to have its day. Unseen, the underwater part of the volcano blows up. A sesmic water wave fifty or so feet tall makes it showing. Naturally when all the cavemen and cavewomen see it coming they must try to out run it by running along side the ocean. You know it's coming in because all the water is draining off the beach. Oh well, nobody said cavemen were overly intelligent.

15. I liked the funeral scene...not a bad way to go with the whole village standing around saluting your body as they pour fuel over you. Light it up with a torch and push it out to sea with the appropriate music. Hmmm, not bad at all. Maybe that's where the Vikings got it. I mean, you take the village leader, tall, strong, fine shape and red headed. A nice stern look on his face during the funeral. Give that guy a shield and battleaxe and you have Eric the Red. Hmmm, I think you guys should study that funeral scene a few times...I don't think I've ever seen it better done except in that movie (I think it was...) The Vikings.

16. The quicksand scene: Yes there is such a thing underwater and is considered incredibly deadly--ask anybody in National Geographic.

17. Man eating crabs? Finely done. I've heard that these armour plated spiders have a ten foot long leg spread on the bottom of the ocean. (They do have some 'real' monsters down there yea know.)

CONS:

Regardless of the other reviews throwing off on this movie--I feel it is carried through to its' conclusion with all subplots tight up nicely. done. The writer should have done a little more study on the language part. I think he did...just not enough.

So all in all, this is a four or five star movie. The writing is there, the idea is there and carried out just fine. The acting (believe it or not) is right on target. They had enough money and everybody did their part. The special effects are on target and despite the sexy over tones they take a back seat to the story--good, that's how it should be done.
So why do I give five stars to a four star movie...well, the funeral.
I felt a slight tightening in my throat...who would have thought it?

There it is. I'm not sure I can rate this movie down to the level with the other popcorn movies so lets just say a salad bowl of popcorn, two hot dogs and a big drink. Though it is all laid out there for you and requires little thought to figure it out I recommend deeper study, and as we all know deep study of a movie requires both corn and dogs. Bye!』

(Watch it for the Cave Girls and Akita...Oodalla and Neikro!)
『Take this film for what it is and get a copy of the uncut version on DVD if you can. Its out there if you look hard. The cave people seem to have a problem with the Sun and they repeat several words many time like Akita! Oodalla and Neikro. Victoria Vetri is not the only amazing cave girl as there is a couple others. The cool thing is they even show the older beat up cave women missing a couple teeth as we can't imagine that they would all look like models so that's realistic. The stop motion dinosaurs are nice and Harryhausen like for fans of that kinda thing. It is not a good movie by any means but it is funny to watch and like I said the uncut version does have some nudity and that's always fun in Dino films.』

(Hokey but enjoyable - my 6 yr old thinks its a hoot.)
『I always liked caveman movies since I was a kid. Recently I watched this with my 6 yr old daughter. I was suprised at how she got into it. She's still trying to figure out the language of the cave folks. I keep telling her its just jibberish the actors are saying so they wont have to grunt, but she's convinced there is meaning to it. Anyway, its just childish escapist fantasy, but sometimes thats all you need. And, oh yeah, its got fur bikinis.』

(Assinine)
『There's no point in belaboring the scientific inaccuracies of this movie or nit-picking the roughness of the special effects. What's damning is the earnest, self-righteous, preachiness of the script rendered incomprehensible by an attempt to recreate a neolithic language. In this ancient world blonds are considered inferior so they're segregated from the rest of the tribe. Blonds are Black! Get it!?!?! This is what drives the plot and if you've seen some of the early Star Trek's cheesier episodes
then you needn't waste your time. Watching this movie is like
waiting in the office of a sadistic dentist who hasn't got anything for patients to read except the Salvation Army War Cry.
I enjoy bad movies. I even own a copy of Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy AND I don't mind admitting it. But this film is bad beyond redemption.』

(The Best)
『This is one of the best horror films I have ever seen! No gore just a great ghost story that will keep you glued to your seat. The Changeling』

(GREAT Haunted House Movie!)
『This movie is guaranteed to give you the chills! It stayed with me long after I viewed it. The scene with the ball scares me every time I watch this movie. HIGHLY recommended!』

(Another one of those movies Hollywood forgot how to make)
『This is one of my favorite horror films of all time. About the only ones I can think of that I like as well are the original "Halloween," and "The Shining." Those two movies are very different films from each other, and from this film, but all three are characterized by one common theme: what really scares you is what you DON'T see. Somehow, Hollywood forgot this a long, long time ago. Your imagination, given a little room to work, can conjure nightmares more vivid and more frightening than anything the best art department and visual effects specialists can ever put on celluloid. If done well, things only need to be hinted at, and then you will fill in the details out of the scrapbook of horrors that you carry around in your head, and you mind will tailor it to your own deepest fears.

Don't get me wrong, visual effects are a true marvel of modern film making, enabling makers of films to achieve effects that their forebears only dreamed of. Done well and judiciously, this can tremendously enhance a film. The problem is, these days, almost no one uses this tool judiciously. It's invariably overdone. I can't think of a recent ghost story told on the screen where we don't get treated to full, detailed views of the ghost sooner or later. These days, they always strive to outdo the last film with yet more spectacular stunts, more spectacular effects. Sometimes it works, but it rarely rises to the level of some of the old films, where the technology was more limited, and this forced them to rely more on the unseen, on suspense, drama, and the talents of the actors and the director.

"The Changeling" is a movie in the old style. The Ghost is never seen (except, once his identity becomes known, in a flashback to the scene of his murder), but his ominous presence pervades the film almost from the beginning. Imagine yourself in the place of John Russell, the main character played to perfection by the late, great Geo. C. Scott. All alone in this huge, old, dark house, and you begin hearing inexplicable noises. Before long, you realize there is another presence in there with you. Do this while watching the film alone, at night, in your own dark house.

One of the scariest scenes I've ever seen in a movie is the scene where Russell hears the rubber ball his deceased daughter once played with bouncing down the stairs. It comes to rest just outside the door of the room where he was looking at photos of his lost family. Knowing the ghost has done this, he drives out to a bridge, and throws the ball in the water, and then arrives back home to find the ball bouncing down the stairs straight toward him as soon as he walks back in the door. You never see anything except a rubber ball, but it almost makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. There are other scenes as well done as this too, and like this scene, all depend on the viewer's imagination, but that's why it works.

This is what a ghost story ought to be.』

(A creepy crawl...)
『While this movie is hardly jaw dropping horrifying it has a nice atmospheric chill to it. Probably the most memorable scene in the movie for me was the scene on the stairs with the ball. I remember seeing a parody of that scene in the movie 'scary movie 2' before I had even seen this movie. Even as a joke it's kinda creepy. George C. Scott's acting is quite good. It is good viewing for a chill night in October or anytime you want a good old fashioned ghost story.』

(ONE OF THE BEST EVER MADE!!)
『To this day, I will never understand why this movie isn't more well known. As far as I'm concerned, this is THE best haunted house movie ever made. I saw it on cable waaaaay back in the early 80's as a young teenager, and instantly it became one of my favorite films. Here I am, almost 30 years later, writing this review, and the memory of that first viewing is as clear as if it were yesterday, and I admit, the goose bumps are starting already. A truly creepy, quite scary, and intensly atmospheric film that sucks you right in and builds steadily throughout. This is a perfect example of what a great script, director, and cast can do. There is no need for gallons of blood or shock value. Good old fashioned suspense, and what you DON'T see. You will not be disappointed with this movie. I agree with one reviewer in that the shot of the wheelchair at the top of the stairs still gets me. And the ball bouncing down the stairs. I still hear it when I close my eyes. God, they don't make em like this anymore!!!』
『When a recent widower (the wonderfully overemphatic George C. Scott ) moves into an antique Washington mansion, his realization that he may not be the only resident leads him toward a deadly secret that refuses to remain buried....The best haunted-house film since the legendaryHaunting, this potent, classy combination of the mystery and horror genres eschews explicit gore and dumb shocks in exchange for a subtle creepiness that occasionally builds to a terrifying peak (watch out for that seance scene!). The result is a satisfyingly intelligent horror film with an intriguing dash of Watergate-era paranoia. Director Peter Medak went on to direct the considerably more gratuitous and somewhat less effectiveRomeo Is BleedingandThe Krays.--Andrew Wright

『My son loved this Video! (I got one for me too.) Thank you so much for the prompt service&the affordable price. I'll be 'seeing' you again! :)』

(surprising)
『I din't expect much, as alien movies are usually pretty much the same. This one has some twists, however, that set it apart from the rest. The characters are believable and it is entertaining, If you like the genre, I recommend it.』

(Read the Book)
『Want to know what really happened? Then read the book, instead. This movie, highly dramatised, severly distorts much of Travis' experiences. It is entertaining, which it was meant to be, but for studying UFOs, get the book.』

(Great film.)
『The film is truly frightening in every aspect, despite is subject matter. The craft and abduction looked so real it made my skin crawl, truly well done. The spacecraft scene alone is worth the price of the movie alone and is truly one of the scariest scene's in movie history. This story might just be true....it hasn't be proven otherwise. The ending was strange though I doubt someone would be that relaxed and jolking around if they had been abducted.』

(Creature from the Black Lagoon)
『Quick delivery. Quality product. Classic movie. Great entertainment. Well worth the money. I am a very satisfied customer.』

(Creauture wants a mate)
『The Creature from the Black Lagoon is one hour and nineteen minutes long and was released on March 5, 1954. The movie starts out with the creation of Earth and then goes right into the story. When scientist Dr. Carl Maia, discovers a skeletal hand with webbed fingers, he goes back to tell his friend Dr. David Reed and tells his co-scientists and a trip is launch to find more of this hand. Once in the Black Lagoon, they discover a creature living there. The crew discovers gill-man creature living in the lagoon. The crew does capture the creature, but it escapes later that night and injures Dr. Edwin Thompson who was guarding the creature at the time. The underwater shots are breath taking. I love it when Kay Lawrence is swimming in the lagoon and the Creature is trying to make a pass at her. The Creature From the Black is a great movie to own. The Creature from the Black Lagoon gets an AAAAA+++++.』

(Still fun in 2-D but Why Not 3-D?)
『The Creature from the Black Lagoon is one of those classic 50s drive in horror flicks that abounded during that time. It is still fun and I enjoy it. The picture and the black and white is wonderful. I only wish they had included the 3-D version too. I saw that at the movie theatre about 3 years ago and that was fun!』

(MY FIRST MONSTER FILM.)
『This was my first "monster" film. I can remember the stir that it caused when it was first released and remember that my mother would not allow me to attend. Now telling an ten year old boy that there is "forbidden fruit" at the local cinema, and telling him that there was no way he was going to attend, is a pretty sure fire way of getting that kid in the theater, one way or another. Yup, I went. (I fear this is indicative of a character trait, or flaw, if you will, that is with me still, after all these years). You have to remember that this was in 1954 and things were quite different. We lived in a very small town, Southern and quite conservative, and ticket prices at the time were .10 cents for kids under twelve, and there was no rating system. Anyway, this movie absolutely terrified me, and it terrified my friends...it was GREAT! We loved it!

I recently watched this movie again and was delighted that so much had stuck with me over the years. It seemed like only yesterday that I first saw it. The movie is of course is in black and white, which to my mind, made so many of those old monster/space/horror movies so effective. The acting in this one is actually quite good. Now you must remember that at ten years old, I was just beginning to figure out that there was a profound difference between girls and boys, and it was a difference I very much felt I liked...did not really know why, just knew I liked it. In current terms, I could only describe Julie Adams and her white bathing suit as "hot." Apparently the creature did too, because he spent most of the film trying to drag her off. Can't say as I really blame him much either. Anyway, I think I probably had my first "actress" crush at that time.

The story line is rather good in this picture and is probably known my most folks in the known universe, who have the slightest interest in films of this genre. The plot is well covered by other reviewers here. It has been raised to the status of "classic," and this rating, in my opinion, is well deserved. You must remember that this film was done without the advantage of special effects, color and high tech sound. The creature wore a rubber suit, but looked oh so real! The underwater sequences are still as good today as they were at the time the movie was made. For this grade and class of movie, the casting and acting were quite well done, rather amazingly so, when you consider some of the other clunkers that were fed to us in those days (and still are being fed to us, when you think about it).

Now several reviewers, and critics alike, have pointed out that the monster in this particular picture was, of all the monsters in those times, the least loveable and least able to gain sympathy from the audience. I personally did not find this to be true. I remember at the time I first saw it, I was more on the creatures side that on the boat load of scientists. I have to admit, after recently watching it again; my sympathies were still with the monster. As unlovable as he was, I still sort of felt sorry for him and could see his side if the issues.

If you love movies, something I dearly love, no matter the genre, this is really one you should see, if you have not already done so. It is part of our movie heritage and it would be a shame to miss it. And by the way, 54 years later....I still think Julie Adams and her white bathing suit was pretty hot!

(Love On The Amazon)
『CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON is one of the least scary monster movies I have ever seen. Sure, it probably seemed more frightening to the original 1954 audience who saw it in 3D on a big screen but it's tough for the modern viewer to forget the creature is a man in a rubber suit and the actors are rather obviously on a LA back lot not the Amazon. The story is basically a love triangle (or would that be a love quadrangle?) Gorgeous Kay (played by the lovely Julie Adams) somehow manages to look immaculate in her rather revealing wardrobe even after days floating on a boat through the Amazon jungle. Kay, we are told, is a research scientist who owes her career to Mark a trigger happy rich guy who is the leader of this Amazonian expedition and in love with her. She really loves fellow scientist David, a more sensitive type with a respect for nature. The creature is her third love interest who watches her from afar before reaching up the courage to grab her and take her to his grotto. There are some violent scenes and several crew member meet death at the monster's hands though the gore level is minimal. The movie has several well done underwater scenes but since like most of Universal's monster movies this is filmed in black and white the viewer feels a little cheated in missing some of the beautiful river life. A real pleasure of the film is the music and the creature even has his own theme which is played whenever he makes an appearance conveniently calling wondering attentions back to the movie. For lovers of classic monster movies this is likely a must see but for the average film fan like myself it is nothing out of the ordinary.』
『Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 07/08/2008 Starring: Richard Carlson Richard Denning Run time: 79 minutes Rating: Nr』
『Jack Arnold's horror classicThe Creature from the Black Lagoonspawned not one but two iconic images: the web-footed humanoid gill-man with a hankering for women and the leggy, luscious Julia Adams, the object of his desire, swimming the lagoon in a luminous white bathing suit. Not sinceKing Konghas the "beauty and the beast" theme been portrayed in such sexually charged (though chaste) terms. Arnold turns an effectively B-movie plot--a small expedition up a remote Amazon river captures a prehistoric amphibian man, who escapes to wreak havoc on the team and kidnap his bathing beauty--into a moody, stylish, low-budget feature. The jungle exteriors turn from exotic to treacherous when the creature blocks their passage and strands them in the wilds. Much of the film is shot underwater, where the murky dark is animated by shimmering shards of sunlight, creating images both lovely and alien (the studio-built sets of the creature's underground lair are far less naturalistic, but serve their purpose). As with most of Arnold's '50s genre films, he's saddled with a less than magnetic leading man (in this case the colorless but stalwart Richard Carlson) and a conventional script, but he overcomes such limitations by creating a vivid and sympathetic monster (helped immeasurably by a marvelous suit of scales and fins) and establishing a mood thick with atmosphere. The film was originally shot in 3-D.--Sean Axmaker

(A Good 'Ol Fashion Apocalyptic Story!)
『I literally just got finished reading Primitive and I just had to share what a GREAT novel this was. Gonzalez has successfully pulled off one of the most exciting apocalyptic stories since Keene's zombie invasion in The Rising. And what's great about this particular novel is that it's a very interesting and orginal take on the end of the world. What's scary is how realistic Gonzalez creates the beginning to the end of the world; on how people would react, their emotions, society as a whole. I easily think this is J.F.'s best book since Survivor. Please check it out whether you buy the tradeback or the digital release. It's a great story and it needs to be read.

(Great Apocalyptic Novel!!!!!!)
『I highly recommend Primitive if you like apocalyptic novels. I love the idea that Gonzalez came up with the world reverting back to their primitive nature that still exists deep within us. Something releases it one day upon the world. There are survivors that are struggling to stay alive but are constantly hunted down. Something evil and ancient awakens once again that rules over the Primitives and it is very old.』
『It began as just another day for David Spires and his wife Tracy: coffee, breakfast, and getting the kids ready for school. Then the bottom dropped out of civilization. The world ends not with a bang or a whimper, but with a dizzying downward spiral. Instead of the rat race of commuters scurrying to beat the clock, humans are now packs of animals reduced to snarling primitives. David, Tracy and their daughter Emily, along with fellow survivors, leave Los Angeles for the safety of the country where fewer people means fewer primitives. But as they venture farther away from the city, they realize an unnatural force is at work. Civilization didn't just fall apart...it was overtaken by an ancient evil that was present before the first cave paintings. Human history has no formal record of it, but the dark presence that's fueled nightmares since time began has crept out of the shadows...and its influence is growing.』

(The Book I've Been Looking For!)
『Ever since I became interested in modern Asian horror films, I've been trying to find a book that would help me pick out what films to watch next. This is that book! Whereas other books touch on such films, this book focuses on them in detail, fully explaining all the different versions of The Ring and The Grudge, which films influenmced them and how they have influenced subsequent films. Fully covers all recent horror films fro Japan, Korea and Hong Kong; as a result of it, I have bought a number of fantastic films that I would not otherwise have heard of.

It includes detailed chapters on: The Ring series; The Grudge series; the Tomie series; Kiroshi Kurosawa; Korean films; Hong Kong films; American remakes. Very readable. Written with enthusiasm and knowledge. Excellent!』

(Has a lot of interesting information, but is spoiler riddled and too heavy on the author's opinion.)
『This is a good read for someone interested in modern Asian horror, but is best suited to people who already have a healthy amount of experience with the genre. Kalat's book has a LOT of great information about these films, but unfortunately he doesn't seem to know who to target with his book: the neophyte will be put off by the sheer number of spoilers in the book, while the experienced viewer will get irritated by the number and breadth of the plot summaries.

The spoilers are really my problem. If you read the book, you'll see that Kalat makes these half-hearted attempts to avoid spoiling these films for the reader, but at the same time gives away MAJOR twists in some of them.

As someone who's seen a large number of the films he discusses, I've found a lot of useful and interesting information in here, but this really isn't for the neophyte.

The book is also riddled with the author's opinions, many of which are easy to disagree with or, as is the case of his chapter for the "Tomie" films, based on such tenuous reasoning that it seems like he missed the point of the film(s) entirely.

Still, for entrenched fans willing to sift through the opinions and plot summaries, there's some real meat here, and I'd conditionally recommend this.』

(J-Horror is must-have for anyone watching Asian horror films)
『A terrific book! I also have ASIA SHOCK, which is great, but I think this one is even better, and I hope the author will do an updated edition in another year (if not sooner!). The only thing I would add is an index; there's a lot of great information in here, and index would be a huge help. Otherwise, full marks for a wonderful book that I dip into time and time again!』
『The first year on the job a young idealistic teacher, tries to persuade a shy, virtually autistic boy call Tetsun to give up his obsession for flies. She changes her mind when she becomes aware of the breadth and depth of his knowledge of various flies. When a local food-processing factory begins to suffer from a fly problem, it is young Tetsun to the rescue, vindicating his teacher's belief in him.』

(Great for What It Includes, but Format Will Give You Headaches)
『This book, "edited and with comentary by David J Skal," is pretty good. Here's my "official" review...

You can't fault Mr Skal for his selection of stuff -- fiction, nonfiction, excerpts from longer works. All that material is on-target and really a wonderful portmanteau of Vampirian lore.

But, despite the tagline on the cover, "edited and with commentary," the commentary is, at times, rather thin gruel.

I would have hoped for commentary specific to the selections, more like annotations, or explanations of this or that thing that appears in the story or article. Instead, in the sidebars, we often have excerpts of other stories that were published at the same time as Story X, or interminable lists of decades of vampire movies or lists of vampire books, etc.

The amount of actual commentary, compared to this "padding," is a small percentage.

It's also ironic that, in the acknowledgements, Mr Skal thanks his copy editor. Now, nobody's perfect, but in this book I came across a few dozens of simple misspellings, letters dropped from words, etc; paragraph indents at the tops of pages when we were continuing a sentence started the previous page; and so on.

And what's with the sudden change in type size for just one word, or one line? This happens more in the sidebars than in the main text, but for some of us it's kind of jarring.

These little irritants keep this book from being A-Number-One, for me at least. If these things don't bug you, then run -- do not walk -- to dive into this anthology.』

(the only thing missing is the rest of dracula...)
『i recommend this book highly to anyone who has an interest in vampires. not only does it contain stories from classic gothic styling to present, the side bars provide very interesting information about vampires in general and the background of the stories and authors. this is like getting a well resarched "the vampire book" and a compilation of the greatest vampire stories ever written. aslo contains complete listing of vampire literature and cinema with author, year of publish or cinematic release. get this book. for the size and quality of the contents, the under $30 pricetag is well worth it.』
『The most wide-ranging collection of vampire tales ever features two centuries of spine-tingling writing, from John Polidori to Robert Block, Alexis Tolstoy to Bram Stoker, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle to Henry Kuttner. Every page ofVampiresfeatures a column of commentary by the editor, expanding upon the stories and exploring the evolution of the vampire mystique in folklore, literature, and popular culture. More than 200 beautifully rendered black-and-white images of vintage engravings, film posters, and popular artifacts make this big book the“living end” of vampire fact, fiction, and lore.』
