(Van Helsing) 『This movie had everything it held your attention from start to finish, the great thing about it was, every monster I had ever seen as a child was in this movie. No other movie has ever given us Dracula,Frankenstein, wolf Man and Mr. Hyde. It started old World and finished modern. I loved the take on James Bond gaget inventor who was not yet quite a priest and Van Helsing's guide. Your heart just went out to the Frankenstein monster. The story line was fantastic you understood what was going on the entire time . The visual effects was exciting, but i wanted Anna valeris brother who looked a lot like Errol Flynn ,to stay alive a little longer, and it would have been great if you could have seen them clearer in the clouds at the end . But as a whole this movie was spectacular.』
(van healsing blu-ray) 『Great movie and the product I recieved from Amazon was in excellent new condition. No problems enjoying my movie.』 『Like a roller coaster ready to fly off its rails,Van Helsingrockets to maximum velocity and never slows down. Having earned blockbuster clout withThe MummyandThe Mummy Returns, writer-director Stephen Sommers once again plunders Universal's monster vault and pulls out all the stops for this mammoth $148-million action-adventure-horror-comedy, which opens (sanscredits) with a terrific black-and-white prologue that pays homage to the Universal horror classics that inspired it. The plot pits legendary vampire hunter Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) against Dracula (the deliciously campy Richard Roxburgh), his deadly blood-sucking brides, and the Wolfman (Will Kemp) in a two-hour parade of outstanding special effects (980 in all) that turn Sommers' juvenile plot into a triple-overtime bonus for CGI animators. In alliance with a Transylvanian princess (Kate Beckinsale) and the Frankenstein monster (Shuler Hensley), Van Helsing must prevent Dracula from hatching his bat-winged progeny, and there's so much good-humored action that you're guaranteed to be thrilledandexhausted by the time the 10-minute end-credits roll. It's loud, obnoxious, filled with revisionist horror folklore, and aimed at addicted gamers and eight-year-olds, but this colossal monster mash (including Mr. Hyde, just for kicks) will never, everbore you. A sequel is virtually guaranteed.--Jeff Shannon』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (More explanation is needed as to how the problems are solved, for example why do Scully and Mulder survive) 『The first episode, "Darkness Falls" opens with a group of loggers at a remote camp making the decision to abandon the camp and flee on foot for their lives. None of them makes it, so Scully and Mulder travel to that very remote logging camp. A local forest ranger and the head of security of the company that owns the logging camp accompany them. A group of environmental activists called "monkey wrenches" that sabotages logging operations has been active in the area. When they arrive, they find the camp deserted and from the food still sitting on the table, it is clear that the crew left very hastily. They make contact with a monkey wrench that is fearful of their lives and they find a human body cocooned in a tree. An unusual species of insect is responsible and the antagonists must somehow work together in order to survive. This episode ends rather poorly; Scully and Mulder survive an attack by the insects, when others do not. Their survival is not explained. Also, there is a hint of other disappearances decades earlier, yet for reasons that are not in any way addressed, at that time the insects never seemed to extend the threat beyond that local region of the forest. "The Erlenmeyer Flask" opens with a man that is apparently human in a car fleeing from the police. The man is clearly superhuman; he easily overcomes several police officers armed with batons and even though shot twice, manages to flee and dive into the water and never surfaces. The mysterious informant that talks to Mulder contacts him and encourages him to take an interest in the situation. In a very short time, this becomes another case of an extremely secret government program to create some form of hybrid super being. As Scully and Mulder carry out their investigation, everyone that gives them information is killed and they also become the targets of the assassins However, for reasons that are not explained, the government agents that are otherwise so ruthless seem to have qualms about killing Mulder and Scully. While it is obvious why Scully and Mulder cannot be killed, it is a very weak point of the plot. When this level of ruthlessness is achieved, the lives of a couple of FBI agents would also be considered just as expendable. Scully discovers a very small pickled alien body and learns that the DNA of that species is being combined with human DNA to create powerful beings. The man of the police pursuit that opens the episode is a product of that experiment. The episode closes with Scully and Mulder resolving to continue their investigations, which provides fodder for future episodes. One of the recurring weaknesses of "The X-Files" is the fact that the government agents suppressing the evidence of alien involvement are on the one hand ruthless yet always seem to lose that trait when dealing with Scully and Mulder. 』
(almost perfect, but the erlenmeyer flask braught it down.) 『well if it wasnt for the erlenmeyer flask this tape would be perfect, but i didnt find the episode that great. But darkness falls is great. Its about some type of bugs that are killing people in the forest. and of course mulder and scully along with a park ranger and some other guy go up to the forest to investigate and....well you probably know what the story developes into.』

(It's what got me hooked) 『I love Darkness falls, I have been trying so hard to get it on video. Other than the Bermuda Triangle season 6 episode, Darkness falls is my favorite.』
(The two stories change the episodes viewer history forever.) 『Darkness Falls is a personal favorite, I videotaped it and bought the book, a class A episode.
The Erlenmeyer Flask is a favorite of mine because the ending becomes significant in the future of the show, I believe anyway. END』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Neat idea, handled poorly.) 『This movie's plot is a really neat and original one. Teens go on a boat ride and the boat sinks, trapping them on an island where there's a nice hotel that is decked out with Christmas decorations. Turns out the hotel/island is trapped in time on New Years Eve 1959 because of some experiment that the government was conducting. Neat idea, right? But this is where the coolness ends. Random monsters attack the people and it makes little sense. The makeups are poor. There is little gore. But stiill, the idea was good, it was just handled poorly. Another highlight is the original music by CRY NO MORE, esp the opening sequence with 50's party footage set to their song "Recipie for Romance". Also, the box art itself... with the partying skeleton... is great to have for your collection.』
(I Still Liked It!) 『I agree with all the other reviewers - including those who liked it and those who didn't. Low budget - yes. Production values could have been better - yes. Do I still like it - yes! Here's why:
Almost all horror B-movies from this period were low-budget affairs. You have to like horror B-movies and the period or you simply won't enjoy them. What this movie lacks in sophistication, high-priced special effects and acting skills it more than makes up for with imagination and some really interesting and original scare scenes. One reviewer has mentioned the elevator scene. I also liked the way an everyday table cover transforms itself into a killing, evil entity.
Horror is imagination, mood and remembering how spooky the night could be sometimes when you were a kid.
I also liked this movie because it was British. That may not be a point in its favor to someone who is British, but it added just that dash of out-of-the-ordinary for American me. The British also have a strong literary and movie tradition of malevolent spirits, and this movie definitely had plenty of those!
No, this movie will not be one of those twenty titles I will view over and over and never tire of, but I'm glad I viewed it and I may do so again sometime. You just never know...

(Lets Do The Time Warp Again) 『Bloody New Year follows a group of people who become stranded on an island where some goofy stuff is going down. Most of the action is set in an old hotel that looks like it's stuck in the 50s and decorated for Christmas. Soon our small group is under attack from various ghostly goings on like ravenous fishing nets, figures jumping out of movie screens, indoor snow storms and vaccuum cleaners. The victims come back as possessed zombie types a la Evil Dead. SPOILER! It seems that the island is indeed stuck in time coz back in 1959 a plane carrying an experimental time warping device(only in the movies, people) crashed on the island thus forever keeping the island in 1959. Of course an island stuck in time doesn't necessarily explain all the supernatural mumbo jumbo, but I'm not about to go and get all logical on a film like this. I guess we have to just assume that not only is the island stuck in time, but is haunted as well. A double whammy! For a very low budgeted horror film this actually has a rather cool and original plot, the problem is that it just isn't handled all that effectively. I didn't think it was bad by any means(more like 3 and a half stars), it succeeded in entertaining me for what that's worth. But for a neat idea like this, something just seemed to be missing or not clicking totally. I would recommend this movie however to fans of low budget horror flicks because it is well worth seeing. It's an obvious labor of love for the film makers, and they certainly didn't let a lack of budget hinder what they wanted to do.』
('Evil Dead' Meets 'The Funhouse' Meets 'The Twilight Zone') 『Based on the review title, you can imagine that this film has many facets that congeal to make a crazy, tasty oatmeal of a movie. Every contrivance of horror film history is used in this film, from ghosts to zombies and then some. The production crew must have decided to pull out all the stops and try every effect done before and put their own spin on them. This is what makes "Bloody New Year" endearing. It is not an excellent film by any stretch of the word. The acting is mostly weak, but the viewer hangs on to each scene waiting for the next scare or effect. Some scenes are executed well, while others are simply amateurish. This is a guilty pleasure that any horror fan should add to their collection to review every turn of the new year.』
(Somewhat stylish, but off-putting by weak budget, plot, and script.) 『It's definitely not your run of the mill slasher fest, as it's got a weird horror and sci-fi mix, with an interesting premise, but it falls short all across the board as far as the meat and potatoes of a film are concerned.
There apparently did not seem to be a running script, as for much of the film, especially the beginning, it sounded like every line was ad-libbed and improvised, with people barely getting there short and awkward lines out. There is little dialogue, and what there is, sounds like the actors are either unfamiliar with it, or are completely improvising as they go. The plot is basically these kids are at a carnival and get into a beef with some local hoods, then escape on a tiny boat, which sinks and they end up on a strange island, with a deserted hotel that is completely decorated for Xmas and a New Year's Eve party.
The premise is interesting, but the plot isn't taken anywhere, and the movie completely stalls when the scenes shift to a sci-fi cause of all the casualties on the island. The special effects are very low budget, and not helping are the DVD transfer's colors looking rather washed out.
There are a few stylish scenes which save this from being the worst horror film out there. The best is when one of the girls attempts to ride the elevator, and upon pushing one of the floor buttons, it turns to soft mush, and then these arms protrude out of the back of the elevator wall to grab her and suck her in. This scene was ultra cool and it looked like the low budget actually made it look realistic, with the arms bulging through what appears to be painted latex. The cracking paint as the arms swooped in actually made it look very real. Definitely the high point in the film, and one of the better scenes in any horror movie of this time frame.
There's very little interest here, apart from a few scenes, and while it's not the worst of the genre, it's held down from rising above other horror flicks due to it's wooden acting and low budget. You might be interested in seeing it once, but nothing more. There are much better examples of stylish 70's and 80's horror out there.』

It has originality along with a cast of colorful and crazy characters. I am baffled by some of the negative reviews regarding this movie. People who didn't like it must be the soft, sensative type that only love cheesy horror movies like Hocus Pocus. This movie is not for the squeemish or faint hearted. It is very graphic and deals with a family of twisted killers in the 1970's who torture their victims in their rundown shack. It has a very dark circus freak/Pshycedelic feel to it that keeps you at the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next. Don't let the negative reviews fool you, check this movie out and you be the judge for yourself.』
(Like the movie BUT) 『I enjoyed the DVD of this title very much. Unlike many people I talk to, I thought it was a great ride. BUT....I am guessing it wasn't Robs choice to remove the Sid Haig menu intro from the bluray version (which is probably the most talked about part of the film) I recieved the bluray today and was very disappointed to see that his hilarious intro was removed from this version. BUMMER!』
(Definate horror movie!) 『If you are a horror movie fan, this movie is for you! A kind of Texas Chainsaw massacre family, but with alot more thrills. It is fun to watch, very entertaining, gory, kookie, graphic. Characters are awesome!』
(Pass on diner with the Firefly family) 『The other night Sid started backwards by watching Devil's Rejects before it's predecessor House of 1000 Corpses. Thanks yet again to our on-demand station that made this one came available while all the characters were still fresh on the mind. Have to say despite a lot of the reviews this was one very creepy flick that takes place with a very uncomfortable situation. That situation would be getting stranded in some hick town to be welcomed in by a family that turns out to be serial killers also housing the local legend known as Dr. Satan. Yeah it was absolutely as crazy as it sounds, and Sid loved it.
The movie starts out with 2 couples who are on the road looking to write a book about the countries strange roadside attractions. The first stop they hit is Captain Spauldings fried chicken and gasoline, that also has a funhouse type tour. While there they learn the legend of Dr. Satan and decide to take off in hopes of finding the tree he hung from. Once there car breaks down after piking up a hitchhiker named Daisy (Rob Zombies tasty wife) all the fun begins. We are introduced to the ultra-physcotic Firefly family that couple well with Leatherface's relatives. In addition they house Dr. Satan who performs experiments on people they catch while they're still alive. Some actual creepy moments, which is so rare in film.
So very surprisingly House of 1000 Corpses was one of the better horror films Sid has seen in sometime. The way it was shot was very dark with hints black comedy and a lot of tripped out imagery. It almost seemed like certain scenes were made for those viewers kicking back stoned out of their minds. Oh yeah, oh yeah. Now obviously it is nearly impossible to be scared by a film, but this one had a lot of creepy elements especially toward the end. When they finally found the Dr, who looked like the crypt-keeper with an oxygen mask on, and his butler the giant axe maniac the scenes got very tense. Just the thought of coming across that would freak anyone out. So yes we really enjoyed and would have years back thanks to all the scares and Sheri Zombie nudity.』
(The birth of Rob Zombie as horror movie genius) 『Rob Zombie's first foray into horror moviemaking as director and creator is a little piece of bloody heaven. While some say the flick is too campy, the origination of the Firefly family that continues into The Devils Rejects is pure sublime pagan slasher fantasy. When four unsuspecting young adults stumble onto this cannibalistic family in search of the legendary Dr. Satan, the film spirals into its awesome culimantion with two of the coolest villians - and one of the greatest extended B-movie horror scenes - in recent history: Dr. Satan and the Professor. This film represents the early blueprint of Zombie's horror moviemaking genius.』 『It's sick! It's twisted! It'sHouse of 1,000 Corpses, and it's more fun than a wholesome bowl of "Agatha Crispies"! Dropped by two studios (Universal and MGM) and doomed to obscurity until Lions Gate Films gave it a limited theatrical release, Rob Zombie's gonzo horror flick is a blood-spattered throwback to the gore-fests of the '70s, lending new meaning to the term "box-officegross." Most critics misunderstood this unbridled exercise in graphic style and violence, but for devoted horror buffs it's a refreshing rebuttal to the comparatively "polite" frights of the post-Screamera. While paying homage toThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre,Last House on the Left,Motel Hell, and other gory classics, Zombie's ramshackle plot (two young couples are terrorized by an inbred family of homicidal maniacs) lacks a crucial sense of dread, but his pastiche of vivid colors, grainy fetish-films, and photo-negative imagery is guaranteed to hold your attention. A bona-fide cult item, thisHouseis definitely worth a visit... if you dare.--Jeff Shannon』 『Two young couples take a misguided tour onto the back roads of America in search of a local legend known as Dr. Satan. Lost and stranded, they are set upon by a bizarre family of psychotics. Murder, cannibalism, and sataninc rituals are just a few of the 1000+ horrors that await.』

Usually ships in 24 hours Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (*Plonk*) 『Greed. 'Twas the only reason to make this mockery of the storied Alien franchise. "Let's throw something together and link it to 'Alien'," studio executives must have been saying, "and soak up as much doe as we can until word-of-mouth kills it." And therefore ALIEN: RESURRECTION was made, with a disinterested Sigourney Weaver and enough nonsense to overrun a lunatic asylum--and a howler for an ending only too appropriate (the monster gets flushed away).
Following the last noble installment, it is now, like, 100, or 200, or something-hundred, years later; there is no Ripley--but there is a clone of her, merged with some DNA from the queen alien herself. So now Ripley is this ticked off superhuman with a perpetual smirk suggesting Weaver was under the impression ALIEN: RESURRECTION wasn't a serious offering, but satire. If only it had been. Of course, the alien itself has been cloned, and scientists are now breeding it as the ultimate military weapon--all under the foolish notion they can "control" this pesky acid-bleeder. A band of (yawn) smugglers comes aboard, the alien runs amuck, most of the snide military folks get their comeuppance, Weaver looks bored, then the nonsense ending. There. Just saved you some green.
Yes, there is a supporting cast; it looks just as ambivalent as this film's star. Winona Ryder wanders about with an irritatingly confused expression; she only changes it when she encounters Ripley, changing to an expression of wanton desire (if she and Weaver had liplocked maybe they could have salvaged some of this turkey). Brad Dourif is his usual creepy self, name me a movie Dan Hedaya has not been in, and Ron Perlman looks like the poster boy for halitosis. ALIEN: RESURRECTION is just awful, and in no way should be associated with the other three remarkable predecessors. When it comes to this final installment, heed the advice of George Carlin: "It's b/s. . .and it's bad for ya." --D. Mikels, Author, The Reckoning』
(Better with Time) 『I purchased this item (and the entire series) as a Collector's Edition because I was hesitant to buy the Quadrilogy (due to the rumored compression errors).
I'm rating this 4 out of 5 stars because of the packaging, which is a flimsy digipak.
A cardboard flap on the right holds the booklet inside the inner sleeve. The discs themselves snap into plastic cases glued to the back of the cardboard sleeve, which folds up like a letter that slides into the main case.
The biggest annoyance to the packaging is that the back of each sleeve is covered in a piece of artwork printed on a flimsy sheet of paper that's glued to the back of the it and held in place by a gob of adhesive. This actually came off when I tried to pull the DVD sleeve out.
As for playback, it wasn't flawless (to my immediate dismay). After 53:32, disc 7 skipped while playing the Special Edition of the movie. The DVD continued to spin in my player until I hit stop. I then re-loaded the disc and selected the same scene ("Ripley Comes Through"), let it play up to the same point, and never encountered the problem again. I actually played the scene three additional times without it skipping so I suspect it has something to do with how the DVD was mastered, because it seems like there's a slight jump at 53:33.
I hadn't seen this movie in a long time and it was better than I remembered, especially with the new 8 minutes of additional footage (which contains an alternate opening sequence and ending).
Disc Two seemed to play fine, as I watched about 6 of the documentaries. My favorite was "In The Zone: The Basketball Scene."
Despite the shoddy packaging, the 2003 cut of Alien Resurrection is well worth the purchase alone.』
(Pretty Good) 『the movie was very interesting but i was disappointed about the ending... i was hoping for more alien action and the end just wasnt that great... other than that pretty good』
(my fav. Alien movie is now mine! muahaha!) 『I wasn't expecting this to come via UPS cause I always got things from Amazon via USPS, so it was a good thing I was home when my package came. It was in a brown paper thingy and wasn't packaged very well inside (no protective wrapping), but the movie was fine and it played fine, so it's all good!』
(Strange and provocative vision of a post-human future) 『What people forget when they respond to this film is that Alien 3 shut down the series, very deliberately and very conclusively. Not only did Ripley die, but the driving concerns of the series that were set up in the first film had been addressed. So there was nowhere to go but in a radically new direction, and that's what Jean-Pierre Jeunet did. While the first films used the aliens and the technological context in which they appeared to address the question what makes us specifically human, this new contribution to the series is more interested in the question of a possible "post-human" future.
In Alien the enemy was not really the monster. The monster's unique method of reproduction merely served to highlight the "human condition": that we are vulnerable, that our bodies are ill-equipped for survival except in the most congenial of circumstances, that they are subject to violation by organic and inorganic forces outside of us. The idea of being "violated" through the mouth and "impregnated" by a monster is horrible, but that possibility serves to highlight our dependency upon science and technology in order to stay alive (even her on Earth), and our increasing "alienation" through technology from the natural world and from the evolutionary struggle for survival. Ash (the robot scientist) and Mother (the artificially intelligent computer that kept them alive and gave instructions) and the Company (that treats human life as expendible) were the real enemies of Alien. Ripley was a hero because she didn't think scientific fact and material gain trump human empathy (her concern for a cat) and human interests.
Aliens takes the same ideas and the same basic storyline and expands it: more military, more weapons, a girl and a sensitive soldier instead of a cat, but ends on a familiar note. Ripley ejects the threat out of the airlock and is able to escape with her body and her principles intact. This relatively optimistic resolution of both the first and the second film is what Fincher's third film rejected, by impregnating Ripley and killing off the girl and the boyfriend during the opening credits. This time the issue is raised onto a theological plane and the question is whether we can find meaning in a universe where not only are their alien forces beyond our control that can destroy us but that, as a general rule even if there are exceptions, we humans either can't seem to help ourselves or don't much care as we harm others for our own gain. Ripley seems to find meaning in her final act of destroying the alien and herself, thus saving humanity from the careless greed that would use such a monster without regard to the human consequences. With that act, while notall questions the series raises are completely resolved, the series seems to reach a logical end, having adressed gender, reproduction, humanity, science, technology, war, all in the context of defining the human over and against those alien forces that threaten constantly to overwhelm humanity.
With Alien Resurrection, the series starts again, but in a new direction. Sigourney Weaver is no longer playing Ripley, but an Alien/Human cloned hybrid who somehow remembers something of her former incarnation but no longer possesses the same kind of horror of the alien. In fact what horrifies her most are images of her own creation, visions of the technological process that brought her into being. Whereas the first three films aimed for a certain kind of realism, Alien Resurrection verges on the surrealistic nightmare landscape of Jeunet's The City of Lost Children and Delicatessen. What we see may seem silly or strange or skewed, but I think that is because we are intended to get a skewed, or post-human, vision of the human attempt to control the monster, that would seem strange and absurd through the eyes of the no-longer quite human Ripley and the android Call (Winona Rider).
Admittedly, this is a brief and undeveloped defense of the film - and in this brief form it is probably guilty of over-intellectualizing the films, and "forgetting" that the primary appeal of these films is not "intellectual" but visceral -- but I hope it suggests another perspective: that rather than think Alien Resurrection is a failure because it doesn't live up to the terms of the series as Ridley Scott set them up, we should consider the possibility that a "resurrection" of the series may require a reworking of its basic assumptions and style. I admit to being heavily influenced in my opinions about this film by Stephen Mulhall's excellent little book On Film - while I disagree with some details of his account, I think his general approach to thinking about the Alien series as a whole is quite intelligent and compelling.)』 『Perhaps these films are like theStar Trekmovies: The even-numbered episodes are the best ones. Certainly this film (directed by French stylist Jean-Pierre Jeunet) is an improvement overAlien 3, with a script that breathes exciting new life into the franchise. This chapter is set even further in the future, where scientists on a space colony have cloned both the alien and Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), who died inAlien 3; in doing so, however, they've mixed alien DNA with Ripley's human chromosomes, which gives Ripley surprising power (and a bad attitude). A band of smugglers comes aboard only to discover the new race of aliens--and when the multi-mouthed melonheads get loose, no place is safe. But, on the plus side, they have Ripley as a guide to help them get out. Winona Ryder is on hand as the smugglers' most unlikely crew member (with a secret of her own), but this one is Sigourney's all the way.--Marshall Fine』 『Studio: Tcfhe Release Date: 09/09/2008』
Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review (Weaker than the first one) 『Julian is out and lures Jenny into another Game - "Lambs and Monsters," in which her friends are caught one by one by the Snake and the Wolf. Jenny has to find the Shadow Man's base in order to free her friends and to be released from the promise she has given Julian in the previous game.
I found this book less entertaining than "The Hunter." It took almost half of the book for Julian to appear, the game itself was much weaker, we didn't learn anything new about the Shadow World, and there was too little interaction between Jenny and Julian. Hopefully the third book ("The Kill") will be better. 』
(Very satisfied) 『I got the book very fast and it was in perfect condition. I bought it for my wife, she had read it years ago and wanted to read it again. We were afraid that no one would have it so we were exited that we could find it here and that the original book was too.』

Core2Duoノートレビュー 's review ("All anybody can do is try") 『I just loved that message^^^ You'll get it from reading this book.
So Rashel Jordan becomes this vengeful vampire hunter after having lost her Mother to one of them at the young age of 5. John Quinn deemed himself a "monster" when he was turned into one during the colonial times, yet he chose to embrace that darkness completely from then on. And so you then put them together, and what do you get?? A real nice tale about discovery of self, justice, honor, and love.
It was a great, short read. I wished it was longer because I would have loved reading more on Rashel and Quinn; an epilogue would have been so nice. But of course they are part of a series where each book focuses on different characters.
When they surprisingly come together and learn they both have honor and are strong, and ESPECIALLY when they touch; you certainly learn that there are more to people and races than their labels or their reputations. I enjoyed seeing them process these revelations; seeing them come close to killing each other and what occurs instead. This story is about change, too. Change for the better when you are confronted with an opposite to you, or so you think.
This quote summed it up perfectly for me; "Under the white light that revealed their inner selves, it was clear that small differences like being vampire or human didn't matter. They were both just people...People who were stumbling through life trying to deal with the hurt." I absolutely enjoyed this coupling and with added twists here and there by the lovely LJS, this story was quite entertaining with a pacing that was swift and steady.
Enjoy it for yourselves :)』
(Before Vampire Academy, There Was The Chosen) 『The Chosen is the first Night World book that begins from the main character's point of view... at age five. It's Rashel Jordan's fifth birthday, and she's celebrating with her mother and best friend, Timmy, at an amusement park. But before the day is over she watches a vampire kill her mother, eat her best friend, and burn her aunt alive.
Years later we find our beautiful dark-haired, cat-eyed girl a sleek, dangerous, and prestigious vampire hunter. Rashel is The Cat, known for murdering vampires all along the East Coast. She joins up with the vigilante team, the Lancers, on a stake-out (pardon the pun), only to find herself fatally attracted to the vampire she's supposed to kill.
Quinn is legendary in his own right; a vampire dating back to the New England years, known to have a black heart and emotions colder than ice. He also happens to be a killer telepath and terribly dangerous, even to hardened vampire hunters. Imagine his surprise when he wakes up after tangoing with two hunters to find himself looking into the eyes of The Cat.
What follows is an intense hunt. Rashel, face cloaked by a scarf, allows Quinn to escape, tarnishing her reputation and even her own opinion of herself. She attempts to make up for it when she stumbles across Daphne Childs, a fluffy bunny of a girl on the run from supposed vampire slave traders.
Rashel is a deeply involving heroine. She's strong, tough, and always prepared. Despite how jaded she is, we see her helping others at the risk of her own life. She even goes head-to-head with Quinn, knowing his reputation. Quinn is just as fascinating. We saw a peek of him in Daughters of Darkness, but he really shines in this novel. His backstory is heartbreaking, moreso when he's betrayed near the end by one of the only people he trusts.
This is easily one of my top three for this series (and no specific location, as my three favorites are so for several different reasons). Even if you pass on the rest of the series, this is one you cannot let alone.』
(As night falls Rashel stalks the streets.....) 『looking for vampire scum! After a friend and family perish at the hands of an evil vampire Rashel whips herself into killer shape and goes on a rampage as she leads a double life...hunting vampires by night and attending school during the day! All is well for Rashell, kicking vampire butt at night until she crosses paths with a magnetic vampire named Quinn. Rashell finds herself foiling the kidnapping plan and letting Quinn go free! Their paths then cross again when Rashel goes undercover at a Nightworld night club... Quinn has no idea the beautiful green eyed girl he meets at the underground club is the same lethal vampire slayer he met that night he was ambushed and then set free by. A determined Rashell wants to be let into a nightworld slave trade and will use all her wiles to get Quinn to let her into the slave trade. This book has an exsplosive ending! Astonishing secrets are revealed to both Quinn and Rashel. L.J. Smith is my top author and I also suggest Christopher Pike.』
(One of the Better Ones) 『As the fifth book in the Night World series, 'The Chosen' improves on all four of the previous books, drawing on deeper themes and ideas than the rest, and setting the scene for this continuing trend in the next book 'Soulmate'. Rashel Jordan is only five years old when she witnesses her mother being killed and her younger brother Timmy being drunken from by a vampire. Because she's seen the killer and is telling others about what happened he comes after her when she stays at her Aunt Corinne's house, burning it to the ground. Rashel is alone in the world. At seventeen years old, she is the bane of vampire-kind. Calling herself 'the Cat' she hunts and kills their kind in all of the major cities, and there is a large bounty on her head. At the time this story takes place Rashel goes to the Lancers, a human organisation for killing vampires and joins in with a small group who're watching a warehouse that has been lately occupied by vampires. Their goal is to catch a vampire and discover its reasons for being there - through torture if need be. Among the group is a young girl named Nyala whose sister was killed by a vampire. Yet when the vampire is caught and the others go to scout around, Rashel finds that to her horror she and the vampire - Quinn (last seen in Daughters of Darkness) are soulmates. Letting him go, Rashel finds that she is suddenly wanted by both sides of the fight - the vampires still have a bounty on her head, and the Lancers think she has defected to the other side. And it doesn't end there. While on the run from both of them Rashel literally runs into a young girl Daphne Childs, who is one of the missing young girls of late. With her in tow Rashel has access to exactly what the vampires are up to. For unknown reasons - though Rashel suspects its the slave trade - girls are being abucted from a club known as the Black Iris by none other than Quinn himself. Rashel's mission is clear - get into the club, become one of these 'chosen' and thus get herself to one of the secret and hidden vampire enclaves. And she'll have to do it by herself...
As you can see, the premise is a fascinating one, and there is no shortage of interesting characters and ideas. Not all vampires are bad, not all humans are good so it would seem, and there are enough twists and turns, suspence and excitement to keep most people interested. It draws on things mentioned from the other books - the enclave is probably much like the ones Rowan, Kestrel and Jade escaped from in Daughters of Darkness, and the password that Rashel uses with the Lancers 'the night has a thousand eyes/and the day only one' is re-used in the prophesy in book seven. L. J. Smith extends more on her idea and the nature of the Night World than previously seen, and several characters pop up that will have appearences in other books - namely Hunter and Lily Redfern. The 'mission' plot strand gives the book some focus (too often L. J. Smith's work rambles, changes, backtracks or doesn't know where its going) and the pace is fast and never dwindles.
However, there are a few flaws, the nature of which keeps this book from being a 'five-star' novel. The character of Nyala was a complicated and intriguing one - a girl who was slightly mentally unstable. I don't want to give too much away, but for those who have read the books, I felt that she should have perished in the fire. Okay, that's not very nice of me, but a good author should know when to destroy a character for greater impact in the book's progression. But no, L.J. Smith simply *had* to save her, didn't she. She just *had* to have yet another happy, cliche-ridden ending that is so prevailent in so many of her books. To have Nyala has a tragic figure would have been both poignant and heartbreaking - *that's* what we should have come away from the book feeling. Secondly, Daphne Child's part in the book is pretty implausible. Let me get this straight - she manages to escape from the jaws of certain death and is saves by pure chance by Rashel. And when she is faced with what she got away with, she wants to...do it again? Huh? Yes, yes, she's very brave about going back to the Night Club and letting herself get kidnapped, but come on! - it was just plain stupid. No one in real life would ever do this to themselves. It was the same when Rashel was at the docks and she turned around to find all the girls still there - face it, they would have run like deer. It also ended very abruptly - we don't know what is to become of Timmy, of the girls, of the enclave...it ends with simply the boat sailing back to the shore. I for one had many unanswered questions, and since each book tells of a totally different couple, they weren't to be found in the next book. Finally, the use of the name 'Timmy', brought back Lassie flashbacks: 'Oh no, Timmy's down the well!' Unfortunatly this meant whenever Timmy turned up I was plauged by visions of him floudering in water.
All in all however, a good read. One of L.J.'s more suspenseful, darker works. Highly recommended in the context of the Night World series.
But 'Timmy'?...』
(Pretty Good) 『This is a pretty good book. The characters are good. The plot's great. The writing's wonderful. So what's my problem? It should have been longer! Most of the Night World books by L.J. Smith manage to feel complete despite being short. "The Chosen" was different. The characters, their feelings, and their lives were complex. I especially would have been interested in learning more about Quinn. It just felt a bit rushed to me at the end. Actually, that's probably a good thing, that I loved the characters enough to want more. In any case, for the length she had to work with, L.J. Smith did a pretty good job.』 『Seeking revenge on the vampires who killed her mother, martial arts master Rashel Jordan rescues Daphne Childs from near death and is swept into the Night World Slave Trade, where she is evaluated by the irresistible Quinn.』
