(A pity they only have the soundtrack)
(The song,"Rollercoaster of Love"really turns me on!) They really should consider putting the show on DVD. The show was and is creative and innovative. The CD is good but not great, a feeble reminder of the show itself. They should release the series on DVD. 'Nuff said. This song is really dumb, as is Jacob McMillan who made the KL group dance to it. I feel like I can have safe se(x) now a lot during se(x)ual intercourse.

(Awesome score!)
(Dark Music From A Dark Man!)
(It's Elfman, all right, but not at his peak)
(It was....ok.) I bought this primarily becuase I wanted the "Don't Fear the Reaper" song but was a little disappointed that it lacked the other songs from the movie and only contained instrumentals. Becuase the film was shot in New Zealand they used local bands for most of the songwork and then Danny Elfman for the instrumentals. Now I love Danny Elfman, but this was not one of my favorites from him. Unfortunately this one leaves off some really good songs from the movie and I'll just have to live without them or movie to NZ. "The Frighteners"is an excellent film, and is accompained by an excellent soundtrack. The score for"Frighteners"is an eerie score, with an excellent theme song.Danny Elfman makes another fine score that deserves to be in everyone's music collection.Whether you like"The Frighteners"or not, this movie score is worth a listen, by anyone. If you buy this cd,you won't be sorry. This is an Album that I enjoyed, the theme is just sensational, but I won't lie, you might get a little tired of it but it is still Danny Elfman! All together it is a great album and if your in to the darker side of Danny's music like me this is the music for you and I recommend it! This is one of those for the die-hard Elfman fans. I'm one, and even then, after my first listening, my reaction was:"That was a lot of noise."It's gotten better...it has to grow on you, I guess. If you're just shopping for some good listening music, keep looking. If you're an Elfman collector, yes, this one is still a worthwhile purchase. I dunno. I usually LOVE Danny Elfman stuff. But this album leavs me waiting for...something more. For one thing, it's a short score. The music isn't that catchy, either. I've listened to it over and over and only a few parts of the album stick in my head. The music, in itself, is good. Nothing wrong with it (the pianos in here are fabulous!), but it's just...not what I was expecting. The movie's really good, and this album has it's moments, but I've heard better. That's not to say it isn't good, just...not one of my favorites.Plus"Don't Fear The Reaper"has been raped by some guys calling themselves the Mutton Birds. It's fun to listen to, though. If you like Danny Elfman stuff, you'll dig this. Rerations < The Frighteners: Music From The Motion Picture >

(Rare find these days)
(Superb Jerry Goldsmith Film Score)
(The Goldsmith Zone)
(THANK YOU!!!) I'm trying to figure out why Amazon has posted the wrong track listing for this product whose full title is "Twilight Zone-The Movie Original Soundtrack" by Jerry Goldsmith (the composer is correct). But the track listings on this recording actually are: 1. Twilight Zone Main Title/Overture 2. Time Out 3. Kick The Can 4. Nights Are Forever (sung by Jennifer Warnes) 5. It's A Good Life 6. Nightmare At 20,000 Feet/Twilight Zone End Title A beautifully written and composed work by Goldsmith that really carries the film without the viewer realizing it...I have had this disc since it was originally released on CD in the late 1990's. Well worth a listen! This album has been in my collection ever since it's original release way back when. My collection is quite large and have been slowly collecting some of the old stuff in CD format that I have on vinyl such as this one. It took so long for it to come out and nearly gave up and forgot to check. Now I found it while searching for "Zone" DVD's and discovered that it's out of print it seems! Wow from one extreme to the next and nearly missed finding it. One reviewer mentioned one song in this CD "why was it even on there?" In fact, that very song was the main reason I wanted it. "Nights Are Forever". It was the song playing in the night club when Vic Morrow walked in. It was not a mainstream song in the film. But I liked it so much. I was very pleased that it made the sound track. Jerry Goldsmith will always be one of my favorite film composers. The man crafted such scores as "First Blood", "Gremlins" and even the original Twilight Zone Television series.
Here Goldsmith gives us music from each segment included in the motion picture, "Time Out", "Kick The Can", "It's A Good Life" and the infamous "Nightmare at 200,000 feet". The score goes from being militaristic to whimsical&romantic, and even eerie and horrifying.
This is a must for any Goldsmith fan, and a great companion piece to the film of the same name. Thank you Amazon.com for making this available. Even now, almost twenty-five years since its original release, TWILIGHT ZONE--THE MOVIE is understandably considered at best just an okay kind of film in comparison with the classic TV series that spawned it. The fact that Vic Morrow and two Vietnamese child extras were needlessly killed only tainted the film that much more.
But there's little denying one of the film's numerous saving graces, namely one more great score composed by master film composer Jerry Goldsmith, whose genius is very evident in conjuring up the film's atmosphere of mystery, suspense, wonder, paranoia, and psychological horror. Much as he did for THE OMEN and STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, the composer weaves numerous musical elements: oscillating, Herrmann-influenced strings for Segments 1&4; a congenial children's waltz/scherzo for Spielberg's segment with the kids and the old folk's home; and a combination of cartoon-like wackiness and Debussy-influenced tone painting for Segment 3. And of course it wouldn't be the Twilight Zone without Marius Constant's familiar theme music and Rod Serling's introductory narration, would it?
If the film had been made without incident, it would almost certainly have been a big box office hit in 1983, instead of the modest hit that it actually was; and Goldsmith's score would be as well-known as many of his others. Still, the score does stand out, and it's well worth revisiting. I owned the vinyl bacvk when this first came out, but lost it over the course of many moves. And I've REALLY MISSED it!!!
I am SO GRATEFUL that you had a cd copy to sell me, and I found the product and service to be perfection!!!

customer 's review (FIRST EXPANSION FOR HORRORCLIX MINIATURES) This item is a booster for "The Lab", the first expansion to the collectible miniatures game (CMG) HorrorClix, produced by WizKids. In this game, you collect plastic miniatures whose dials show current combat stats. Each "click" of damage increments the dial, showing the combat stats for a progressively wounded monsters. You assemble teams of these miniatures to play against opponents, slaying victims and fighting opposing monsters. Among the different figure types are irradiated undead, velociraptors, mad scientists, evil health workers, and zombie killers.
These boosters are not playable by themselves; you must purchase a starter set (which comes with specific figures, 12 victims a map, clix ring, dice, and terrain). The only way to get different monsters is to buy the boosters; The Lab has about 100 figures. There are commons, uncommons, rares, and uniques, and the rarity is indicated by the set number (e.g., #1-33 are commons, #34-66 are uncommon, etc., although I forget the exact transition points). Figures are also Rookie, Experienced, or Veteran based on the ring color on the dial (yellow, blue, and red, respectively). Vets are usually the best, although sometimes the rookie abilities are better (for example, rookie Candy Striper). A common vet may be a better figure than a rare rookie.
The booster itself is a squared-off cardboard tube. Inside are 4 figures, 2 common, 1 uncommon, and 1 rare/unique, and their figure cards. The figures are packed in plastic shells and squeezed tightly in. There are also 2 plot twists (event cards that you can play) and one victim pog. The Lab also introduces minion pogs, which are put in play when a victim is slain/rescued by a particular kind of monster. These minions are like bonus monsters for your team.
Some of the other Horrorclix sets have been plagued with production errors, but The Lab has high production standards and you should expect to have correct dials and cards. I haven't had any trouble with booster pulls from this set. The "science gone wrong" theme is definitely a welcome addition to my collection. HORRORCLIX THE LAB:opens the doors to the horrors unleashed whenever man tampers with nature. Mutated experiments, alien visitors and even vicious prehistoric beasts awaityou inside the lab! Using the innovative Clix system, HorrorClix is a wicked-fun game of 3-D monster combat! Each monster features a combat dial and unique monster card for unlimited game play combinations. Map, dice, tokens not included in Booster Packs. Starter Game is required to play. Rerations < HorrorClix THE LAB Booster Pack >

(Lame and mediocre)
(A horribly watered-down version of the original.)
(Awful version of Resident Evil)
(Flawed, but Some Good B-Movie Fun) I'm happy I didn't buy this game. This is just the samething as the one for xbox 360. Thank goodness their's a blockbuster and netflix, if there wasn't then people would be buying game's not knowing that the game is Garbage. Okay back to this game. To be honest I really don't have much to say about this game, it's just the same as the one for xbox 360. The wii version graphic's is kinda dull and using the nunchuck is okay. Avoid this game, no matter if you didn't play the one for xbox 360. Cheap cash-in port. Game just doesn't transfer well to the Wii. And it is a fairly boring game overall.
There is no comparison between this game and RE4 on the Wii. Both use the same engine. But RE4 looks much better and is much better crafted than Chop til you Drop.
Instead of zombies fading in and out it would have been much better to make this game with 2d sprites for zombies and stylize it enough so the sprites fit into the design. It would have been much tighter and much more appealing to the eye.
But to do that they'd have to start from square one. Hence it's a cheap cash-in port.
SAve your money. Rent first or wait until it drops below $20. Okay. I was an avid fan of the 360 version of Dead Rising. It was great- the graphics were nice, the gameplay was revolutionary and fresh, and the voice-acting was second-to-none. In fact, I was playing it yesterday (because I was hosting a party and didn't know what single-player game would be fun to watch) and my guests were more than entertained when I'd break into the Antique Weapons store, fill up my inventory with Katanas and Battle Axes and run in swingin'.
First off, I must say this- I will be basing my review on comparison to the 360 version. You can call it unfair, but if you've played both, you'll see why.
The graphics for CTYD are alright. Every character has a blurry outline to compensate for the previously superb graphics, now dumbed down to ATI quality. It's worth mentioning that this game uses the Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition game engine, which means that holding Z will make you run, swinging the Wiimote will make you attack with a melee weapon whereas pointing at the screen and pressing B will shoot, and lastly, YOU CAN'T JUMP.
Everybody knows that in Dead Rising, jumping is a big deal. In fact, all of the cool unlockable moves he uses involve jumping to do so; karate kicking zombies' heads off, drop kicking them in the face and sending them flying, even just jumping on a zombie's head and walking on them like steps- But they took those out, making you rely solely on ammo and bad one-hit-combo weapons.
I didn't play a ton of this game because they changed too much- they gave Otis freeze-frame conversations so he doesn't stop you with his transceiver in the middle of a big fight, but they also added in an RPG-esque level up system, which I normally love, but not when I'm killing zombies in a mall- it feels awkward.
Obviously, the Wii's processor is weak compared to the 360, so you'll only encounter about 5-10 zombies at a time. This normally wouldn't piss me off so much, but in the 360 version, it helps to see where zombies are so you can mess around with them, kill them, or just avoid them. In the Wii version, you can't do any of those things very adequately since most of the time you'll be surprised at the zombies who just appeared out of thin air and have just swung at you, taking away some health. Speaking of health, they took out the blending station near the skateboard shop upstairs, which, as any Dead Rising fan can tell you, is valuable for making Nectar, Zombie Bait, Spitfire, etc.
Basically, if you've never played Dead Rising before, go ahead and buy this product- you won't know why it's bad compared to it's predecessor. But if you've played this on the 360 and wondered what it would be like to aim at those convicts with a Wiimote, don't bother, it's not worth it. I recommend Mad World, though. :) If they renamed this "Resident Evil 4: Crap Edition", it would be a fitting title. It's built on the Resident Evil 4 engine and was released by the same company Capcom. It's similar in many ways, but better in none and worse in many.
You have similar weapons like the shotgun and the "Blacktail" handgun. It is 3rd person, you have an inventory, and you walk around a mall doing missions that remind me of NES games from the 90s or Japanese/anime games. Subtitled blurbs given out by some nobody. Would have been better with voice acting.
The graphics look like original NES games too, the interfaces, items, and the blood. The graphics are bad. There is a Japanese influence to the way things look. Meaning that it is similar to that certain Japanese style where they dumb down the graphics/art to do it faster and cheaper. That about sums it up. The items, interface, and subtitles in this game are done as such. Sort of like No More Heroes except without the excuse of being "Edgy&Stylish". So any item you pick-up, i.e. fruit (for health), will look blocky and pixelated.
When you kill in Resident Evil: 4 it is fun and looks good and you can blow people's heads off, but in this game it's like late 1990s boring type graphics that just "push enemies" when you shoot them instead of having guts flying all over the place. A zombie (or whatever) in Resident Evil:4 would react to getting hit in the leg, in this game not so. The blood is super bright red, very fake and what you would expect from some old game, or a cheapo knock-off game, which I suppose this is.
But how can it be a knock-off when the same company made Resident Evil: 4? You figure another company would be ripping them off, and would be trying to ride on the success of Capcom's Resident Evil. This game is actually a rehash from an Xbox title, but the Wii's capabilities can't deliver...
The selling point of this game is killing a ton of zombies in a variety of ways. That's one of the problems right there. You kill a lot in this game. I racked up over 300 kills in 15 minutes not really even trying. There are a lot of zombies, just hoards of them. So what's the problem, that sounds good right? But the Wii can't handle that many units on screen and still maintain good graphics. Hence the graphics and mechanics take a hard hit and this game ends up sucking. No fun. Chalk it up to poor and inefficient programming if you want to. But it has to be the Wii's limitations at fault. Either way, it is horrible.
Graphical criticisms of the Wii tend to be taken on deaf ears. But this falls short even for Wii standards. If you've played Resident Evil 4, you're probably going to be disappointed with this game. From reviews I've read, it sounds like the XBOX 360 version of this game is more fun: better graphics&more zombies and NO FREAKING PARROTS. Argh. The parrots get pretty annoying. But I digress.
DEADRISING is one of those games that's pretty fun to play, but the gameplay gets a little bit repetitive. The missions and the scenery don't change very much throughout the game, and fairly quickly you've explored all there is to explore.
The game vainly tries to compensate for its lack of an interesting story by having cutscenes that drag on for too long. Not only that, but these scenes include laughably overwrought acting and silly, on the nose dialogue. I know it's just a video game, but come on!
The fact is, (and without giving too much away) at the point where you think the game is (finally) about to explore some new territory and provide more diverse challenges, it's all of a sudden over. And the ending is not at a particularly dramatic or satisfying point either. It's almost as if the game developers ran out of time or money and decided to just quit. I will support this by saying (again, without giving too much away) that the whole setup -- the diabolical scheme that we're supposed to thwart never gets confronted or thwarted. (like if you were watching a movie, and the villain said, "Muah ha! I've planted a nuclear bomb in the Capitol Building, and you'll never get there in time!" So the hero rushes to the Capitol Building, but halfway there the movie ends abruptly). Like our hypothetical movie, the scenario of certain impending doom gets dismissed rather lamely with a few title cards at the end. I suppose it could be a setup for Dead Rising 2, but mostly it feels abrupt and forced.
All that being said, it's still a pretty cool game, and there's lots of fun to be had. The controls are intuitive, and the diverse weaponry (chainsaws, toy light sabers, lawn movers) fun to use to slay thousands of zombies.
*NOTE: If you haven't played RESIDENT EVIL 4, get that first/instead. Resident Evil 4 is an awesome game. It uses the same engine, has a more compelling story that feels less repetitive, betters graphics and a far richer world. Dead Rising: Chop 'Til You Drop follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, an overly zealous freelance journalist on a hunt for the scoop of a lifetime. In pursuit of a juicy lead, he makes his way to the small suburban town of Willamette only to find that it has become overrun by zombies. Frank escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be a bastion of safety but it turns out to be anything but. (better than the first!)
(FUN!)
(Hitman is better) This game is so disturbing and depressing that it makes the movie darkman look cheerful by comparison! This game is very violent and it makes Mark of Kri look like an T-rated game by comparison. Don't get me wrong I like violent video games I just can't stomach graphic or very realistic depictions of violence. This game is more disturbing than any horror movie I've seen lately(13 Ghosts).
If I wanted to be depressed or disturbed I'll watch the news! This game is not for sensitive people or those who are squeamish! Only buy this game if you enjoy a blood and gory fest! Parents don't get game for your kids or teens this game is rated M for a reason! A Walk Through LifeManhunt two is no way near as good as the first one it's an average game and what spoils it is the executions. On the first one you could see them clearly but on Manhunt 2 the kills are all distorted. At the end of each level you do not get a rating like you did on the first one this takes some of the thrill out of the game, I was anticipating a much better sequel. so my 360 finally gave me the dredded red ring of death and as i'm waiting for it to get repaired, i have my trusty ps2 to keep me busy. right now i'm re-playing manhunt 2.
i love it.
much better than the first installment.
i know that i'm definitely in the minority here and that's fine, but here are my reasons:
1. the story. daniel lamb has escaped from a mental institution, and is trying to piece together his life and his reality. this subject matter makes me want to keep playing until the end in order to find out what happens. in the first manhunt, even though i played it through to the end, i really couldn't care less about the character james earl jones- errr, i mean cash.
2. i LOVE the filters!!!! i agree that censorship sucks, but i have to give rockstar some props here: they took the dreaded AO rating and dealt with it in the most creative way possible. many people say, that you cannot see anything when a kill happens- i say, if you are having trouble figuring out what is going on, you are blind! the filters ADD to the gruesome violence as it puts you in lambs mind as the killings are taking place. this is how he's seeing the violence in his mind! imo, i've seen unedited/unfiltered manhunt 2 kills on youtube, and i gotta say, that they don't look nearly as good.
3. area specific kills are genius! and also jumping through the air from on top of a roof or trash can with a crowbar in hand and landing right on top of a specific enemy is totally rewarding to see!
4. no frustrating moments. i'm re-playing the game on "insane" difficulty, and while harder than i remember manhunt 2 being, it is still a pleasure to play. i remember parts of manhunt 1 where there was a gigantic learning curve simply because of spawn points, bad a.i., or bad level design. manhunt 2 has none of these problems.
i know that a lot of people are probably going to write hate letters, or at least say that they feel differently, and as i said before, that's fine. but really read what i'm saying, and take another look at the game before you judge.
I've been playing this game for a couple of days now, I'm almost finished, while waiting for gta4, and I must say I am happy. I am having so much fun! Maybe the first "Manhunt" had a better story (more paranoia and panic), but this one is easier to play. PS2 graphics are never again going to impress us, but I still find the environments very creepy and nice, and the characters look good. The level design is good, and varied (and twisted), and I know lots of people complain about the gun-missions, but I think they're great! All in all a fun ride. Oh, and for the best experience: Play alone at night... I bought this game for my fiance for Christmas because we love playing Hitman. The graphics are disappointing and there is a special effect that fuzzes out the screen with kind of a scratching sound...very distracting. I would recommend the Hitman Trilogy over this game. Don't buy it. Manhunt 2 creates a horrifying new environment that tests your nerve and your skill. An experiment at a secret research facility has gone catastrophically wrong. Daniel is sent to the Dixmor Asylum, where six years later a freakish storm of lightning hits the power. Leaving it dark and haunting. Daniel Lamb and Leo Kasper are the only surviving subjects. They have one chance to take back their lives and they're taking it. Anyone who stands in their way is a dead man. Players can take control of Leo Kasper in the new Flashback Mode Rerations < Manhunt 2 >

(Clive Barker's Jericho)
(horror game)
(Nothing spectacular, but still an enjoyable game)
(Buy it and Try it! Now that it is cheap it would be stupid not to!) I really enjoy Clive Barker's work ever since hellraiser. If you admire Clive Barker's Story telling it is a must buy. I love Clive Barker. I love horror themed games. I love shooters. This should have been a dream game for me, but it just wasn't. Why you ask? Well, it was just poorly constructed. The concept is cool. Basically you have a group of gunslingers with magical powers and you can switch between them during battles, pretty cool concept. The problem is that a couple of the people are only useful during certain story sections where you have to use them, and the rest of the time their powers are useless. Speaking of useless, you teammates' AI is atrocious, they can do nothing right, which means that even though you have tons of firepower on your side, you'll spend all of your time healing your downed teammates and taking out the legions of demons by yourself. And hmmm, speaking of legions, some battles are obviously glitched because they can go on for a half an hour or more, the enemies just keep spawning! But I have to say, I found the game to be incredibly visually impressive, the world very much came from the mind of Clive Barker and it just looks incredible. Very dark, and very ominous. In closing, this is not a stand out game, but I did enjoy playing through it if for nothing else than the grand scenery and interesting story. Fun, but not too memorable, oh, it also has one of the worst endings ever. this is a scary game but it is hard to play. but a good gamer no problem try it Back when the Demo of this game came out on Live, I played it, didn't understand it too much, but enjoyed it and was waiting to get it. Granted I got it a couple of weeks ago, but still got it nonetheless.
Reviewers always rip games open and have this perception that every single game must have just about 100% of every single element that is supposed to make up a great game. Certain gamers need to realize, like reviewers, that every game will not include 100% of every single element.
Granted this game doesn't offer much in the ways of non-stop heart-throbbing-action or things to make you completely scared being a horror game and all, but still was an enjoyable story to follow through for the most part.
The graphix are nice and there are some nice elements of gameplay when using the weapons and magic of the characters. But overall the game mostly focuses on telling you a story as you play along without involving you too much in it. This is one the first FPS's I've played that was mostly only driven to show you a story without involving you too much into playing in it. sounds kinda boring to some, but a nice change of pace for myself and i'm sure others can find some enjoyment in it too like I did.
Achievements are easy to get in the game and the replay value is moderate to moderately low. I will find myself playing through it again for another round of the story, but after that I don't see myself playing this again for a long time. I got Jericho as a gift and did not really know what to expect. When I finally sat down to play it I was HOOKED. I have not played a more fun game on xbox 360 apart from COD4. The game is long and SCARY. Turn the lights off and play this in the dark alone with the creepy music turned up. You will not be able to last long.
My one real problem with the game is that it is set in historical times but is VERY historically faulted, especially in the Roman levels. But it is a video game and I can let that slide.
SERIOUSLY buy this game, especially because it is cheap now. If I thought it was well worth $60 then anything less is a steal. The game is intense, fun, dark, and well worth the purchase.
Cheers Jericho is a squad-based action/horror game based on an original concept and story by acclaimed horror writer and film maker Clive Barker. The most ancient of evils has broken through into our world and is threatening to spread its taint across the whole of the earth unless it's stopped. At ground zero lies the Middle Eastern city of Al-Khali, a modern city built atop the ancient ruins of a dozen previous conquerors. All attempts of contacting the citizens of the city have failed. With tensions already running high in the region, this is just the sort of thing that could trigger the apocalypse. In Clive Barker's Jericho, players assume the role of the leader of the Jericho Squad - a seven man Special Forces strike team that protects U.S. interests against paranormal threats. Each member of the squad is an expert in modern warfare as well as their own different para-psychological disciplines, including clairvoyance, alchemy, blood magic, exorcism, etc. Players must lead the Jericho Squad into the flaming ruins of the city, moving block by block towards the dimensional rift tearing away at its heart. Along the way, they encounter the horrific armies of hellish denizens that now rule the city and corrupt everything they touch. As players incrementally approach the source of evil, they will have to rely less and less on traditional weapons and instead focus on the combined psychic talents of the Jericho Squad. (good movie)
(Cool! Cool! Cool!) One of the first horror movies I ever saw. To this day it still gives me goose bumps I love it and watch it alot :) Ive been looking for this movie on dvd for awhile, finally found it. Wish the price was a bit cheaper, since this is a older moive, but still if your into horror, or paranormal this one is worth watching. This movie is intense to the point of making your skin crawl! I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes movies like this and not to anyone who is a weenie. This movie is pretty freaky and a good one if you like horror type movies. I don't own it yet but it's on my wish list. First time I saw it was on the sci fi channel and I was probably 10, it scared the $h!t out of me, probably because it was based on a true story. The unknown always frightens. The music fits the movie really well too. The music that plays during the assault scene when they run out of the house gives me the chills. Very entertaining. Definitely a unique movie. Now these are the kind of activities that the ghost hunters would die to get their hands on! It's just hard to believe this movie was based on true events. Don't believe me? Look it up on the web.
Bottom line, if you're looking for a good nighttime movie, I would highly recommend this one! Rerations < Entity [VHS] >

customer 's review (Pure Horror Comedy B-Movie Schlock Genius!)
(goofy but great!!!)
(No 'Evil Dead'.)
(Highway to Hell)
(Highway To Hell) Why hasn't this gem been released on DVD yet?? Yes, this is a low budget b-movie, but, that's it's genius. It takes it's genre and elevates it to an art. There are so many little inside jokes, you have to watch this movie many times over. Add in cameos by Ben and Jerry Stiller and Gilbert Gottfried as a neurotic Hitler, and you have pure movie gold! This movie is great if you like corny movies like me and are tired of the same boring hollywood garbage get this movie!!! Not up to the standard of Sam Raimi's"Evil Dead"trilogy. Some funny moments, one great death, amusing cameos. This is basically a comedy/horror retelling of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, right down to the three-headed hound at the gates of Hades, the Styx and the instruction to not look back. Disappointing ending. Like its scenery, the movie seems a little dry and barren. Some good effects though. Some not so good. Perhaps it's not perfect, because of lack of budget. But it is very unusual and goes way beyond the average horror flick. Somewhere behind all the strange and funny events there is a deep humanity and wisdom. This could become a undiscovered classic in fifty years from now.
I'll admit that the tone of this film was somewhat campy but that is exactly it's charm. I also found the visual effects and the cast in this movie to be more than able to pull it off. Scenes such as the convoy of VW Bugs passing Charlie Sykes (Chad Lowe) in his '48 Roadster, the Ronnie Reagan Iran Contra theme for that roadside bar Charlie Sykes stopped in on his way to Hell City and the road crew of Andy Worhols working for the Good Intentions Paving Co. all against the backdrop of the Nevada desert were pretty cool. Check this movie out, it's good for a few laughs. Rerations < Highway to Hell [VHS] >

customer 's review (Please make it PG-13)
(Bad movie for young kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Scooby's Ultimate Movie, But Beware.)
(ALERT!!!!!!!! this isn't for young children!!!!)
(Welcome back Scooby-Doo) This is definitely Scary. For young children this movie is way too scary and my kids don't freak to easily.
I can see how others like it. But becareful how you intriduce it to your child.
Mr. Timothy Lee-you should be ashamed to let your 4 year old watch this movie over and over. This movie crosses many lines of cartoon and horror flick. Compared to the other Scooby movies, this is more graphic and not quite so much fun. It is fine for teens and up, but get real. This shouldn't be a movie called a 'family' movie, and you should be doing the responsible thing and knowing what is OK and what isn't for young children to watch. Your 4 year old relies on you to be his parent-so be one! For some time Scooby Doo was all but retired and made a brief comeback with "Laughalympics." In 1998, the original Scooby Doo gang would reunite to make this phenomenal movie. But do beware. PG 13 would probably be a more appropriate rating for this movie. It goes to levels Scooby Doo never before went. And while well done, it would probably be a good idea for parents to screen it first and then decide if it is appropriate for children. Well, that said, this Scooby movie is quite arguably Scooby's greatest movie. To make sense of Scooby's long retirement, there is a flashback with Scooby and the gang solving yet another mystery. Some time passes, and the gang has went their seperate ways. Daphne and Fred have a television show and decide they want to see some real ghosts. Except for Fred, the voice casting is different. But they did a good job of finding voices that at least resembled the original voices. (If it's any comfort, the original voice cast would eventually reunite for the 5th and 6th movies.) Moving on, the gang does get back together, and they head towards New Orleans in hopes of seeing some real ghosts. (2 of the 5 parties are of course reluctant. Guess which 2.) Down in Louisiana, they find some more cases of just 'bad guys in masks.' Later they meet Lena who flirts with Fred and offers to show them her employer's (Simone's) haunted house. They also meet Jaques who seems nice enough and the gardener who does not seem so nice. After Scooby fights with Simone's cats, Simone is understandably annoyed, but she agrees to let the gang in. Soon afterwards, we see some things that appear to indicate the presence of ghosts, but as any Scooby fan knows, there might be a rational explanation, and if so, what is the motive? Scooby and Shaggy offer some comical moments with their too healthy appetities. Soon afterwards, clues start appearing that would make us suspect that some real ghosts are involved, but there is some room for doubt. One thing about this Scooby movie is that the expansion from 30 minutes to 90 or so is a good one. It gives us time to remeet the gang, and time to wonder if the ghosts are real or not, and enjoy some welcome suspense as well. Of all Scooby's adventures, this is one of the LEAST contrived and predictable. Another thing you will notice in this Scooby movie is a surprisingly intense soundtrack. (And I had NO problem whatsoever with that!) In a typical Scooby fashion, the gang gets separated and the horror unfolds. This is one ending I won't give away. But I will say true horror unfolds as we find that surprises shock us for a moment, but then make sense upon discovery. The explosion of misleads enables us to say: "Oh! No wonder!" In all honesty, this movie is more frightening than a lot of so called horror on the market. And perhaps the most frightening moment in this movie is when the 'villain' explains the events that preceeded that of the movie. Good writers seem to know that recognition is often the most horror filled aspect of a story. Again, I consider this a strong contender for Scooby's greatest movie, but do be warned. It may very well be too much for young children. this is not a movie for kids! it has real monsters (i know the box tells you that but the art of the film is very grapic and the story is very much ment for adults) so be sure you watch this movie before you show it to kids. now as for the movie it's self it really isn't very good and isn't part of the scooby-doo series as far as i see it!!! just plain not good!!!!!!!! I've been watching Scooby-Doo for more than 20 years, it's one of my favorite cartoon shows, when it was really a good show, before that stupid Scrappy came into the show.
Anyway, the Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island is one of my favorite movies. When they decide to get back the Scooby show again and the movies, this was the first one, back in 1999. Like I said, for me is the best one. I like the new look on the characters, the story, everything.
If I were going to end the Scooby-Doo show (and the movies) forever, this should have been the last movie or last episode of the show. I mean, it's been a couple of years since the gang were split, and they reunite for like a one last mystery and the cool thing is that this time, the monsters are real. Some people didn't like that, but that's the cool part of the movie.
Besides all that, the animation is very cool, like watching some anime movie, the colors area great, the music, everything, it's just Scooby-Doo. Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne and Fred reunite to solve the most frightfully funny mystery of their careers. The scream team's headed to a haunted bayou island to investigate the ghost of Moonscar the Pirate. But it turns out the swashbuckler's spirit isn't the only creepy character on the island. (Lord of the Rings DVD Box Set)
(Great movies)
(Great production) Package arrived a full day before earliest estimation. The DVDs were in excellent collectible condition and the slipcase was also in excellent condition which justified the slightly higher price over comparable listings on Amazon. I paid a little more, but got much more than I expected. Made a great gift without sacrificing quality. By themselves, the three movies are some of the best films ever made; taken together, they are perhaps the best; and with all the additional material and special features that the extended edition has to offer, the viewer is left with an experience like none other. This is the most beautiful box set I have ever purchased. The artwork is fabulous, and the movies are superb! I purchased this boxed set for my son's 15th birthday. When I had no luck finding this set anywhere else, I went to Amazon.com. Although the b'day gift was late it was well worth the wait. He so enjoyed all of the movies and the excellent condition the product was in. Great purchase!!! It's hard to add value to the originals, but the extra features and three separate commentary versions are invaluable and a pleasure to watch. This critically acclaimed epic trilogy follows the quest undertaken by the hobbit Frodo Baggins and his fellowship of companions to save Middle-earth by destroying the One Ring and defeating the evil forces of the Dark Lord Sauron. With new and extended scenes carefully added back into the film the 12-disc set also includes hours of bonus features.Running Time: 785 min.Format: DVD MOVIE Genre: SCI-FI/FANTASY UPC: 794043734724 The extended editions of Peter Jackson'sThe Lord of the Ringspresent the greatest trilogy in film history in the most ambitious sets in DVD history. In bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's nearly unfilmable work to the screen, Jackson benefited from extraordinary special effects, evocative New Zealand locales, and an exceptionally well-chosen cast, but most of all from his own adaptation with co-writers Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, preserving Tolkien's vision and often his very words, but also making logical changes to accommodate the medium of film. While purists complained about these changes and about characters and scenes left out of the films, the almost two additional hours of material in the extended editions (about 11 hours total) help appease them by delving more deeply into Tolkien's music, the characters, and loose ends that enrich the story, such as an explanation of the Faramir-Denethor relationship, and the appearance of the Mouth of Sauron at the gates of Mordor. In addition, the extended editions offer more bridge material between the films, further confirming that the trilogy is really one long film presented in three pieces (which is why it's the greatest trilogy ever--there's no weak link). The scene of Galadriel's gifts to the Fellowship added to the first film proves significant over the course of the story, while the new Faramir scene at the end of the second film helps set up the third and the new Saruman scene at the beginning of the third film helps conclude the plot of the second. To top it all off, the extended editions offer four discs per film: two for the longer movie, plus four commentary tracks and stupendous DTS 6.1 ES sound; and two for the bonus material, which covers just about everything from script creation to special effects. The argument was that fans would need both versions because the bonus material is completely different, but the features on the theatrical releases are so vastly inferior that the only reason a fan would need them would be if they wanted to watch the shorter versions they saw in theaters (the last of which,The Return of the King, merely won 11 Oscars). TheLOTRextended editions without exception have set the DVD standard by providing a richer film experience that pulls the three films together and further embraces Tolkien's world, a reference-quality home theater experience, and generous, intelligent, and engrossing bonus features.--David Horiuchi Rerations < The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) >

(Spike is Back!!!)
(POOR) This is a very bare bones dvd, but that is what I was looking for. I just want to watch the episodes and enjoy, and there was a lot to enjoy in season four. To me,this was the second best season, slowly building up to my favorite season, five. Spike, the Gentlemen, the Initiative, to the intelligent but evil Adam make this the best season ,villian wise. They all had their reasons and all had distinct personalities. I was happy with the condition of the product and the timeliness of it coming I love buffy so it made no sense to have the rest of them without having this one so I had to have it. In stores it cost more or they don't have them anymore. Or they have the complete series which I didn't need. But it is a must have if you are a buffy fan! Season Four has some great highlights like the return of Spike and Willow and Tara falling in love. The only thing I didn't like this season was the whole government Initiative plot line. However the character of Riley played by Marc Blucas ended up being a good addition. One character I missed seeing was Buffy's mom Joyce but then again that was most likely just a precursor of what was to come in Season 5. Other than that the characters kept growing in the most unexpected directions. The dialogue was clever as always.
Buffy was canceled twice make it a huge failure. Canceled by not one but two networks. It obvious why. the acting was just abysmal and the scripts seemed to be written by 2 year olds. just avoid buffy no matter the season. none are any good at all No Description Available. (SAW 5)
(Saw 5 is a 4,5/5 Star DVD) *Saw IV spoilers ahead*
Detective Hoffman is the newest apprentice to John Kramer's legend. With no man left standing after Rigg/Jeff's test in Saw III and IV, including Jigsaw himself, Hoffman does believe he can walk away untested, until it is revealed there is a survivor, and that Detective Hoffman's anonymity is in danger.
This film received generally mixed to negative reviews when it first came out, many of the reasons for such being valid. That is the reason why I give it 4/5 instead of 5/5. But on the positive side, I must point out it has some good aspects. The story and twists of the previous films may have definitely weakened, but we do get to see the teacher/student relationship between Hoffman and Jigsaw develop, during the flashbacks, and we get to see Hoffman having another side to him. In the brief scene of Saw III, and the entirety of Saw IV, Hoffman is a very one-dimensional, feelingless character. But we start to see reasons behind who he is and see him from new dimensions in Saw V, and I found that to be the greatest saving grace of the film.
What people don't understand about us Saw fans is that most of us don't see the Saw films for the gore and the traps, you'll notice I didn't even mention that, we go to these films because of the story and the characters. Many Saw fans were let down by this installment for that reason, but I chose my positive aspects about the film to enjoy, even though for me it probably does rank last in my Saw favorites. Having put off watching this series due to a squeamish girlfriend, a nasty cold, keeping me home from work for a few days allowed me to watch all 5 movies over the course of two days.
Though not the best of the series, it did hold my interest and answer some questions about the background stories of some of the characters. Though gruesome, the ending was predictable. The charm of the SAW franchise is the unpredictable endings and I hope I can be surprised with the next installment.
I'm just wondering if there is a difference between the Unrated Collector's Edition (which I own) and the Unrated Director's Cut. Amazon shows a four minute difference between the two DVD versions but this is not always the case.
Does anyone know?
I'm not a fan of these types of movies. However, a friend got me hooked on the Saw series. The first movie was disturbing; the next 3 were pretty good. I started off a bit confused in this movie. It's all flashbacks to how the agent met Jigsaw and how he became his helper. This movie goes back to the last 4 while there are 5 new victims playing a game. If you get up to use the restroom, you will lose your place in this movie. It also is starting to feel old. The only scene that disturbed me was the 10pint of blood requirement. Watching these 2 folks cut themselves caused chills. As for the rest of the movie, it had that been there done that feeling. The shock value is just not in this movie. Like another reviewer, I agree this series needs to be wrapped up and finished in the next movie. Otherwise it risks getting stupid like Friday the 13th.
If you are not a Saw fan but interested in seeing the series and what all the hype is about, you must start with the first movie. Don't even try starting with this one.
I'm not a real fan of movies that have 5,6,7 movies following the original but this series of saw movies are awsome I find myself really looking forward to the next one, cant wait for SAW 6 If you havn't seen the saw series yet i recomend it, just make sure to start from the first one you wont be disappointed Going into this movie I didn't know what to expect because of all the mixed reviews. I was hearing its terrible to many story lines same old saw and wow they closed storylines from the last movie and it is put together to have another successful one. In my opinion this saw movie delivered big time and now in the series ranks as the second best one ever behind saw 2 for me. One thing the critics had right was there was a lot of stuff to follow but at the same time they closed up stories from the past movies and did a great job making sure you weren't confused. One thing I always like about the saw movies is they start the movie up with one of the torture scenes and it always leads into the movie. They did not focus as much on the killings as they did of creating a new storyline and trust me when you see what happens it will leave you scratching your head. Overall I really liked the killing scenes as the traps were unique and different from the last time. Also the ending is perfect and the best of all the saw movies as it will leave you wanting to come back for more saw. Good movie. SAW 5: UNRATED DIRECTOR'S CUT WS (DVD MOVIE) How do you keep a horror franchise going when your villain has been unquestionably and irrevocably killed off? That's a conundrum any number of genre series have tackled--to varying degrees of success--and the problem facing the sadisticSawfilms in its latest entry,Saw V. The filmmakers' answer--faithful henchmen--is at first blush a savvy idea, as it allows the mayhem of original bad guy Jigsaw to continue unabated, despite the fact that he was dissected on a morgue slab in the previous film.Saw Vextends the premise by having disgraced detective Hoffman (Costas Mandylor from the previous two films) don the pig mask to unleash horrific tortures on another group of seemingly unconnected strangers. Scott Patterson (Aliens in America) also returns as Hoffman's Javert, a dogged fellow agent who escapes death in the fourth film and an ugly fate in this entry to continue his pursuit. All the elements that have made the Saw series popular with horror fans--the elaborate killing machines, the trompe l'oeil plotting, and the sociopathic judgments handed down by Jigsaw--are intact inSaw V, which is a positive for its most faithful followers, but a negative for just about everyone else.Saw Vcovers no new ground, expands no part of the mythology of the series and seems perfectly content to present a lifeless retread ofSaw IIIandIV. It also suffers from the absence of Tobin Bell as Jigsaw, who despite his top billing, is glimpsed only in brief flashbacks. Bell, who could be unsettling even in the stillest moments, gave the series a gravity that kept its least plausible moments in check, and Mandylor, though game, simply cannot provide the same. What's left is dreary and relentlessly downbeat, and to make matters worse, ends on an open note that clearly indicates that a sixth film is in the works, no matter how obvious that the diabolical ingenuity of the originalSawhas been worn to the bone by its sequels. Only diehardSawfans need to sign up for this round of Jigsaw's games.-- Paul Gaita

(I LOVE THIS BOOK)
(The Night World Series is a spellbinding collection)
("Four to Stand Between the Light and the Shadow...")
(Awesome Novel!!!) These are good books, and a great price for the amount of reading. I read fast, and I usually get frustrated because my books arent as long as I would like them. this was an amazing book. It gives us a chance to finally meet the wild powers and get to know more about the probelms and what is coming for not only the night world but the rest of the word as well. it also shows that you cant help who you love and who you are destined to be with. true soul mates just are. I just read all of the series and am hooked!!!L J Smiths style of writing is fast paced and real page turners! Very hard to put down. First published between 1996 and 1998, Lisa Jane Smith's "Night World" series was designed as a ten-book series, best put in the "supernatural teenage romance" genre. It deals with the existence of a secret society of witches, vampires and shape-shifters who live incognito amongst humans. Although the superior numbers of humans mean that they hold dominion over the world, the supernatural inhabitants of the Night World consider them inferior and look forward to the opportunity to reclaim power over the world. Only two rules are in place for the treatment of the human race: to never tell them about the Night World, and to never fall in love with one of them. Naturally, every story was based around these rules getting broken.
The reader was gradually introduced to the Night World and its inhabitants as the books went on. Whereas the first omnibus set up the basic concept for the Night World and the rules in place for its existence, the second began to give the sense that all the stories were interconnected rather than one-off stories. With each installment, more was learnt about the history of the sub-world, the concept of soulmates, and (particularly in this final omnibus) the coming of the end of the world. Such was the case for the first nine books in this series, but unfortunately, the final book in the series was never published, leaving readers hanging as to how the story ended.
But for fans who have waited ten years to get the end of the story, Simon and Schuster now are republishing the series in three-book omnibuses in anticipation for "Strange Fate." Like many, I was a teenager when I began reading these books, and it was a sense of nostalgia that brought me back to these reissues. Surprisingly, they've held up well over the years, even though they are clearly meant for a young audience. For example, despite the fact that each book features a new female protagonist, other secondary characters often pop up in cameo appearances, and there is the sense that the world around them is changing as each book goes on. Concepts such as Circle Daybreak and the soulmate principal grow and adapt in meaning, and we get assorted clues that we are headed toward an apocalyptic battle between good and evil.
This is especially clear in this, the final omnibus in the series, in which Smith introduces the idea of the Wild Powers and the apocalypse. It is prophesied that at the turn of the millennium (hmm, since that's come and gone without a hitch, I think we can assume that the good guys were successful) the world will be plunged into chaos and darkness, and only four individuals known as the Wild Powers have any chance of stopping it. But since the prophesied "chaos and darkness" is of the unspecified sort, many Night World believe that this is their chance to take back control of the world and see the Wild Powers as a threat.
Therefore, it is up to Circle Daybreak, an organization committed to securing peace between all the races, to not only identify the Wild Powers, but to keep them save from the Night World, secure their cooperation in the coming battle, and help them harness their inherent ability to call up blue fire. All they have to help them in this task is a prophesy that provides clues as to who these Wild Powers are:
One from the land of kings long forgotten, One from the hearth which still holds the spark, One from the Day World where two eyes are watching, One from the twilight to be one with the dark.
"Huntress" concerns Jez Redfern, a young vampire who is horrified to discover that her mother was a human, making her an unheard-of human/vampire hybrid. Leaving her close-knit gang of vampires, she turns her back on her past and joins Circle Daybreak, living with her mother's human family and secretly hunting down renegade Night World citizens in her spare time.
She isn't quite successful in juggling her double-life (especially not with her suspicious cousin Clare), but that's hardly her most pressing concern when Circle Daybreak recruits her for a new mission. It would seem that they have information on a Wild Power: someone in the Night World claims to have found one. The reason Jez has been chosen is because the person who is proposing to sell this information to the highest bidder is none other than Morgead Blackthorn, a member of her old gang.
Going undercover into her old territory, and hiding the terrible secret of her lineage as she investigates Morgead's claim, Jez attempts to uncover the mystery of the potential Wild Power before any of her former-friends catch on as to what she's really up to.
It is in "Black Dawn" that a suspenseful complex story and the strongest protagonist of the entire series are united in order to make the undisputed best book of the entire series. When Maggie Neely learns that her brother disappeared and is presumed dead whilst mountain climbing, she immediately suspects that his girlfriend's story is a lie. Trailing Sylvia back to her apartment, she confronts the older girl, only to pass out and wake up in a slave-trader's cart.
While unconscious Maggie has been transported to a secret enclave within the Night World: a hidden kingdom in the mountains that is permanently cut-off from the human world save for the kidnapping of slaves to work in the castle that lies at its centre. Along with three other slaves (that include a mysterious young blind girl) Maggie manages to escape only to find herself caught up in the fate of the kingdom and the people therein.
Even out of the context of the rest of the series "Black Dawn" is a great story. Smith manages to juggle several subplots, including Maggie's search for her brother, her escape from the slave-traders, her relationship with the vampire Prince Delos, the identity of the next Wild Power (the one from "the land of kings long forgotten"), and the political machinations that go on in the Night World. Maggie is without a doubt her strongest, most realistic protagonist who manages to be both tough and compassionate.
In "Witchlight" Smith finally turns her attention toward shape-shifters, the race that we know the least about. Here, a werepanther called Keller leads a three-person team consisting of herself, a witch and a vampire to retrieve the third Wild Power. As well as this, Iliana Dominick also happens to be the Witch Child: the young woman prophesied to marry the son of the First House of shape-shifters and in doing so unify the shape-shifter and witch families.
Keller's problems are threefold. Firstly, Iliana is a "lost witch," raised as a human, who has no knowledge or intention whatsoever in doing what is expected of her. Secondly, Keller is horrified to discover that a dragon (one of the original shape-shifters) has been awakened, and instigating serious trouble among the shifters. Thirdly, she herself has fallen in love with Galen Drache, the man to whom Iliana is to be betrothed to in order to secure peace.
"Witchlight" was my favourite when I was young, and so it was perhaps inevitable that it would be a little disappointing on revisiting it. There's so many plot-holes, unlikely scenarios and assorted silliness that credibility is stretched a little *too* far, even for what is essentially a series that was never meant to be taken too seriously. Why does the team risk war just because Iliana wants to go to a party? Why doesn't Keller recognize her own crown-prince? What exactly does it mean to be the "Witch Child" and why haven't we ever heard of it before? And why, why, WHY does an elite swat team, specializing in covert missions and secrecy drive around in a white limousine? Yes, you read that right. A white limousine.
As a general critique, I've never been a big fan of "the soulmate principal", which basically concerns two characters falling in love without taking the time to get to know each other, just because they're "destined" for one another. This concept in the previous books has always been hit-and-miss, sometimes successful (Ash/Mary-Lynette, Thierry/Hannah) sometimes unconvincing (Thea/Eric, Gillian/David). By this final omnibus, it just feels formulaic. Two characters meet, have a weird outer-body experience with pretty lights in which they find themselves able to read each other's minds, and then announce themselves in love (whether they like it or not).
But on the whole, this final installment in the series contains three of the best stories in the series, in which threads that have been started in previous books begin to weave together in preparation for the final book. There is plenty here that Smith needs to wrap up, including the final line of the prophesy "one from the twilight to be one with the dark," the cryptic words of the dragon who claims it was awoken by "a witch who is not a witch," and the ominous words of the Night World portend which says: "In blue fire, the final darkness is banished. In blood, the final price is paid."
And as a special bonus, we get a sneak peek at the first chapter of the forthcoming final book in the series.
I've waited ten years for the end of this series. My inner-teen has been embraced, a space has been cleared on my bookshelf. I'm all primed and ready for "Strange Fate".
This book was amazing. The other two were great as well, but in this one it has so much more. I'm not gonna say much for the people who haven't read this book yet, and they better read it too if they know what's good for them; cause if they don't then they're missing out BIG TIME. Can't wait for the next and FINAL one. Of course I already have it on pre-order. I'm so excited :D
Vampires, werewolves, witches, shapeshifters -- they live among us without our knowledge. Night World is their secret society, a secret society with very strict rules. (This Author Has Me Hooked) This was a great story with a well-thought out plot.
It did get a little convoluted, at times, but overall a fast read. I came to find JA Konrath after enjoying reading Afraid. Because he uses another name for that novel (Jack Kilborn), I decided to look at his website, where I found that he was allowing (and even encouraging) the FREE downloads of 4 of the best of his unpublished novels (Disturb, Origin, The List, and 55 Proof). I snatched them up and easily converted them to be able to go on my kindle using mobipocket. I am so glad that I did! Now looking at Amazon, I see they are going for a very cheap prize, but how can you beat free?! Plus, they were actually really good! I think the idea of allowing a reader to try an author's previous work for free is an ingenious idea because, at least for me, once I enjoy a work of an author I will then search for more. Now I will be moving on to Konrath's Jack Daniels series because of his style of writing and entertainment value.
For this novel, Disturb, I really enjoyed it because it mixed several genres without losing its humor. The initial premise of the book is really interesting and relevant, as everyone would love to be able to sleep less while feeling better. For a limited time only $1.89.
A medical investigator tormented by secret guilt. A beautiful doctor with an illicit desire. A millionaire businessman indulging a passion for murder. And a human guinea pig who has been awake for seven straight weeks.
DISTURB by JA Konrath You’ll never sleep well again...
JA Konrath is the author of six mysteries in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels series, including Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Fuzzy Navel, and Cherry Bomb. Disturb is Konrath's first medical thriller.
Disclaimer: This novel is filled with extortion, conspiracy, taboo sex, hidden secrets, shocking violence, and murderous betrayal. Not recommended for the faint of heart.
This ebook version also includes the bonus horror short story, "Dear Diary," about a very special pom pon girl.
Praise for JA Konrath's thriller Fuzzy Navel:
"Fuzzy Navel is Konrath at his best– a hilariously heartstopping thriller."— Linda Fairstein "This gripping novel is an adrenalin rush."— Library Journal "This book moves so fast it was like having the words fired into my head by a machine gun."— Crimespree
Praise for Afraid (JA Konrath writing as Jack Kilborn)
"AFRAID is a masterpiece of unrelenting horror. And I'm not exaggerating. Masterpiece. It's the best piece of fiction I've read in several years. It simply NEVER lets up."— James Rollins, author of The Judas Strain "A bloody, terrifying, hurtling assault across a landscape of non-stop mayhem. A guilty, guilty pleasure."— F. Paul Wilson, creator of Repairman Jack “AFRAID is a true page turner, a novel that offers a million mile a minute action and suspense. (Editor's political views tainted his choices)
(This is why I hate anthologies)
(Some gems, but otherwise so-so)
(Great Read!) Hell some of the stories in this book are masterpices. A few will stay with you forever! Dan Simmons story ( This Years Class Picture ) is a story i loved and will never be able to get out of my mind. Others......not so much. Over all i would say get this book. The best stories in this anthology are quite good, but they are few. Lots more are just a little dull. And, as noted, several are only "sorta" zombie stories ... meaning that the word "zombie" is mentioned, but there are no zombies.
But mostly, I wish the editor had let readers know from the outset that he made many choices based on his political views, which plainly lean to the left, instead of on whether the stories were actually interesting or well written.
Politics and zombie stories do go together, but it takes a master to weave them well, whether they espouse a left- or right-wing viewpoint. Too many of the authors featured in "The Living Dead" are incapable of that.
Like many others, I'm sure, I bought this book after reading the immensely satisfying "World War Z". Now I wish I'd simply looked for "The Living Dead" at the library because my money would have been better spent elsewhere.
For much better anthologies, seek out "Book of the Dead" (1989) and "Still Dead: Book of the Dead 2" (1992), edited by John Skipp and Craig Spector. I'm not being a purist or anything, but I want my zombie stories to be about zombies. I don't need any overt (or covert) social commentary, nor stories which are so loosely based on "zombies" as to not be real zombies at all.
I've read about half this book (18 of the stories), only about a handfull of which are worth the price of admission. Perhaps I'm being overly critical not having finished the whole book yet, but if this first half is any indicator, this book will just re-enforce why I dislike anthologies - you just don't know what you're going to get.
The stories are written well, it's not a matter of any literary problems. It's just that I want zombie stories, not plain horror stories. More than half of the stories I've read thus far would fit into a horror anthology very well, but they do not belong in a book ostensibly devoted to zombies.
If you're a more "cerebral" zombiephile, you may enjoy this book. If you want a book packed full of shambling, flesh-chomping, relentless zombies, this book is not for you. I found this to be an OK book, with some good stories, but all in all, just average.
The stories "This Year's Class Picture", "Stockholm Syndrome", "Sparks Fly Upward", "Deadman's Road", "The Skull Faced Boy", "The Age of Sorrow", "Dead Like Me", and "How the Day Runs Down" are between very good and excellent. However, that is only eight of all the stories. The rest are adequate, but just not that great. The ones by the known authors (Stephen King, George R.R. Martin, Harlan Ellison, Robert Silverberg, etc) seem to be their second string work.
A number of the stories have no actual zombies in them, but seem to be solely included because they mention zombies. There's also an odd number of theater related stories, which just seemed strange.
I would consider this to be a book worth getting from the library, but not worth buying. Come on, who doesn't love Zombies! This is a great anthology for anyone who does. Some of the stories are tame or just strange, but most of these are wonderfully graphic and horrific. I really enjoyed this book, you should really give it a shot. "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth!" From White Zombie to Dawn of the Dead, Resident Evil to World War Z, zombies have invaded popular culture, becoming the monsters that best express the fears and anxieties of the modern west. Gathering together the best zombie literature of the last three decades from many of today's most renowned authors of fantasy, speculative fiction, and horror, including Stephen King, Harlan Ellison, Robert Silverberg, George R. R. Martin, Clive Barker, Poppy Z. Brite, Neil Gaiman, Joe Hill, Laurell K. Hamilton, and Joe R. Lansdale, The Living Dead covers the broad spectrum of zombie fiction. Rerations < The Living Dead >
