customer 's review (obscure but amazing vampire-themed film)
(Color Me Blood Red...)
("A Vampire for Our Age of Unbelief")
(Murderous Martin)
(A Masterpiece) This is probably one of George Romero's lesser known films, but I think it's one of his best(he has also said it's one of his favorites). It's about a young man who may or may not be a vampire, and his struggle to find a place for himself.... To say more would spoil the movie, which I won't do. I recommend tracking down Anchor Bay's 1999 release, which contains the original full-screen format of the film AND a John Amplas commentary. The 2004 Lion's Gate release is an artificially created widescreen(which actually removes more of the image), and no longer contains the Amplas commentary. Romero completists like me will probably just end up buying both versions. ;) Martin (John Amplas) is a lad with a serious problem. He simply must kill and drink the blood of his victims. Is he a vampire? A serial killer w/ an interesting twist? A compulsive blood addict? We are left to decide this for ourselves. Martin moves in with his cousin Cuda (Lincoln Maazel), who is totally convinced of Martin's vampirism. Is he correct, or just an overly zealous religious fanatic? Cuda bombards Martin with all the tired old anti-vampire stuff of legend, like crosses, garlic, mirrors, etc. to no avail. Martin fears none of these things. He is a complex individual who just might be schizophrenic, as his b&w "flashback" sequences could imply. But then again, he may be nosferatu as well! Either way, Martin is a murderer. His prey are drugged with hypodermics, then stripped and drained of their precious red fluid via razor blade. Martin is very careful about not getting caught, covering his tracks well in an age before DNA technology and superior forensics. I really enjoyed this movie. MARTIN is one of George A. Romero's forgotten classics (like THE CRAZIES), and deserves to be in every horror collector's crypt! ... "Heir to the Blood Lust"
Horror master George Romero's 1976 film MARTIN is one of those studies in ambiguity where the edges of reality get pretty fuzzy. John Amplas delivers an engaging and affecting performance as the titular character, a young man who believes himself to be the victim of a family curse in which one member is every so often born as Nosferatu (i.e., a vampire). Romero's script, however, abandons traditional vampire lore--Martin isn't bothered too much by sunlight or Christian crosses, he eats garlic, and instead of fangs, he uses razor blades to access the precious crimson fluid of his victims. So is Martin actually a vampire, or just a severely disturbed young man? What, really, is the distinction? After all, he IS killing people and he IS drinking his victims' blood--so what if he doesn't have fangs? And his elderly cousin, steeped in the ways of the old country, definitely believes, and HE is determined to save Martin's soul or else destroy him.
Films like this don't come along too often, and they rarely come out of Hollywood. Produced a few years before DAWN OF THE DEAD (1978), the first sequel to his magnum opus NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968), MARTIN is one of Romero's more thoughtful and thought-provoking works. Characters stripped of cinematic romanticism, gritty on-location shooting in Pennsylvania suburbs, and brilliant use of grainy black-and-white footage for flashback sequences--actually, are they flashbacks, or has Martin blurred reality with sequences from his favorite films?--help to create a moving and realistic portrait of a young man who, in spite of his murderous habit, is both sympathetic and genuine.
The influence of this film on later indie filmmakers is obvious, most notably on the relative newbie Larry Fessenden. Indeed, Fessenden's 1997 work HABIT would make a nice companion piece--or perhaps the second of a double feature--for Romero's MARTIN, as both offer a slice from the life of a bloodsucker without making it really clear whether or not the preternatural is involved. In actuality, the two films differ in point of view only. MARTIN tells the story basically through the vampire's eyes; HABIT has viewers following things from the victim's standpoint.
The Anchor Bay DVD edition of MARTIN offers a good transfer of the film in the 1.33:1 Academy Ratio. An excellent film that most genre fans will find is well worth the price of admission. Martin, a very early film directed by George Romero, is the very definition of an unsung classic horror film. Released on a shoestring budget at the end of the 70's and dismissed by audiences as"just another slasher film", audiences missed out on a razor sharp black comedy sprinkled with moments of an ultra-sadistic personality study. Martin just doens't believe he's a vampire. Emotionally and morally, he sucks the blood and life out of all those who trust him and are around him, a perfect allogory for the decade to come. Martin deserves to be seen and appreciated by the masses at this time, if only to observe one of the most ironic and startling final scenes in the history of horrific cinema. I saw this film months ago but it still lingers in my memory. I checked it out because I very much enjoyed Romero's zombie films. I already knew many consider it a classic.
From the brooding opening to the unexpected shock of the ending, this films delivers non-stop tension. The disturbed (and disturbing) main character acts wonderfully. Actually, the whole cast is fine.
I recommend it wholly.
Bottom line: As may be expected, there is some blood. Martin (John Amplas) is a modern sort of vampire--he gains his victims' cooperation with the use of a hypodermic needle instead of hypnotism, and uses razors in the place of fangs. "There's no real magic," he says. "There's no real magic, ever." He says this to his elderly Romanian cousin, Tati Cuda (Lincoln Maazel), a true believer in the old religion, and self-appointed keeper of Martin, who threatens to do away with the boy if the vampirism doesn't stop. According to Cuda, the boy is actually 85 years old--young for a vampire. Truly, the supernatural element of the film is always at odds with psychological explanations that make Martin out to be a sexually disturbed teen, not an ancient bloodsucker. Martin's vampiric episodes are intercut with sepia footage of similar exploits from some gothic era, which may either be Martin's memories or his imagination; take your pick. Garlic, sunlight, mirrors--these are devices of Hollywood, and have no effect on a hypo-toting vampire like Martin, as he explains the rules in his role of frequent call-in guest on a radio talk show where he's known as "The Count." These ambiguities are left teasingly unresolved by the film, which is more interested in establishing the relationship between the traditional vampire and the modern-day psycho. Along with the film's narrative economy, these ambiguities makeMartinRomero's midnight-movie masterpiece. At the very end Romero borrows an image from Carl Theodore Dreyer's classic silent filmOrdet, ratifying a moment of religious ritual. Knowing this as you watch the film only deepens the chill.--Jim Gay Rerations < Martin [Region 2] >

customer 's review (Non-Stop Riff-Attack Mayhem)
(A+ great example of what made this show so AWESOME)
(My Cousin Was In Mitchell!!)
(MST3K and Mitchell Rock!)
(" Mitchell ".....And to think that people were actually expected to PAY to watch this, in 1975!!) You really get your money's worth with this laugh a minute riff-a-thon. Even better is the added bonus of saying goodbye to Joel and hello Mike!
Now I understand why this episode is so revered, not a moment is wasted tearing this film to comic shreds and with so much energy it really adds to the enjoyment level. The best moment has to be when Mitchell gets into a shouting match with a 10 year old that is so ridiculous it didn't even need the S.O.L. Crew's commentary to get a laugh.
A truly enjoyable episode, but the most joy came from seeing Joel get rocketed off into space and the promise of Mike taking over as host. my favorite line "Why would anyone want to do that with Mitchell"
This has become legendary in my circle of friends. Just calling out the name Mitchell causes a round of laughter and makes us pull out this movie for another viewing. I have owned the VHS copy of this episode for years and have watched it over and over again. So now that I am finally updating to DVD this is the first one I bought along with The Essentials (Manos, the Hands of Fate / Santa Claus Conquers the Martians) Yes fans vary on weather Joel episodes are better then Mike episodes and some where sad or stopped watching when Joel left (not me). But everyone seems to agree Mitchell is classic MST3K you cant do better as far as the writing goes. It has some of the best one liners in it and is a must see for anyone who is a fan of the show.
My cousin Sigi Frolich was the coroner in Mitchell!! When MST3K was on the air, I ran a video store in Santa Barbara. One day, while they were airing Mitchell, I turned off the movie playing, turned on MST and made all the customers watch Sigi get out of his coroners car!!! Its only for a second, but it's him and he's briefly leaning over the corpse a few minutes later. Sigi passed away a few years ago, he was in his mid- nineties! Oh yeah...almost forgot to say..MITCHELL IS ONE OF THE GREATEST MST3K SHOWS IN ITS HISTORY!!!! I'm probably not going to say anything that most fans of MST3K haven't already said, but I'll try. "Mitchell," for me, is the best razzing Joel and the 'Bots have ever done of a film. NOT the best film, mind you. :) Oh boy, do they lay waste to Joe Don Baker: his weight, his drinking, his stupidity---I mean in the movie, Joe Don---don't hurt me!; his bad acting. But the whole movie is enough of a stinker to provide plenty of fodder for the boys. This is the pivotal episode where Joel (after the movie) leaves the Satellite of Love for Earth, only to have Mike Nelson replace him (not shown here---just a "Push the button, Frank" from Dr. Forrester.
But the jokes are what make the show and they fly fast and furious: "Hey, it's the chase scene's pace car!" "Keep you eye on the sammich!" "That cat Mitchell's a bad...(shut yo mouth!)...talkin' 'bout Mitchell!" "He looks like one of the kids from Fame." "Which one?" "Any of 'em!" "Hey, wasn't John Saxon in this movie?" (his last scenes cut out due to time constraints)
The visual gags are gangbusters also, like Mitchell's hidden gun sliding down the front of his pants, leading Joel to say, "What THE?!!" Catching Mitchell with Baby Oil near his bed while carousing with Linda Evans and (Joel&the 'Bots) screaming in horror at the mere thought.
It just goes on&on. This MST3K is a must-own, both historically for Joel's passing of the torch to Mike and for flat-out hilarity that will leave you aching with laughter. Highly recommended. Poor Joe Don Baker. He catches hell from Joel and the Bots, for this walk-through of a part. Too bad, without their hilarious commentary, this would be unwatchable. The one-liners just roll, right on through to the miserable ending of this little stinkfest. Look for the line where Mitchell is entertaining a call-girl that just walked off the set of THE BIG VALLEY,and forgot to change wardrobe. He hands her a can of Beer. " You've got me wrong, I'd like a glass." Mitchell: " Uh..OK, Your Majesty." Priceless. Long live giving bad movies their just due!! This farewell episode for Joel Hodgson is a sentimental favorite but even more worth it for the hilarity spawned by our captured Satellite of Love friends. The movie centers on the hapless, big lug cop named Mitchell (Joe Don Baker), who fights the rich and powerful drug-dealing bad guys. Along the way, Mitchell finds himself investigating murder, falling "in sex" with Linda Evans, helping an elderly woman like a good son, and telling a bothersome wisecracking kid to buzz off. Match that with clothing and music from 1975 and you've got prime fodder for the biting remarks of Joel, Crow, and Tom Servo--which, of course, they take advantage of handily and in abundance.Mitchellhas a few quiet areas but these are spotty, and when Joel and his mechanical friends start wisecracking, it's all hilariously worth the wait.Mitchell: So '70s, you'd swear Kris Kristofferson was moaning the theme song in the background.--Karen Karleski Rerations < Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Mitchell [VHS] >

customer 's review (Good film)
(The Mummy!)
(Great movie!)
(The Word Is 'Fun')
(The Mummy-DVD) This is still the best of the 3 mummy movies. I thought the film looked great in Blu-Ray. Very crisp and detailed. I always liked the chemistry between Rachel Weisz (one of my favorite actresses) and Brendan Fraser. The special effects throughout the film are very good. Sometimes the acting and script is a little too cheesy, and the John Hannah character can be very annoying (he plays Rachel Weisz' brother in the film), but the filmmakers were obviously going for the Indiana Jones "matinee" feel so it's forgivable. Not a great film but fun. I believe Rachel Weisz carries this film, however, and it wouldn't have worked without her. I lost my original purchase of this and had to buy a replacement, one of the very few movies I watch over and over and enjoy it each time! It's the Mummy need I say more? Great movie for the family (except may be really little kids) and the sequel is just as good as the original.
It seems like a long time ago when this came out, but I remember it being the first DVD I had ever bought sight unseen, meaning I had never seen the film in the theater or on tape. I was pleased. I got what I had hoped for: a fun, special-effects extravaganza.
This was an Indiana Jones-Jason And The Argonauts combination adventure story. It's cartoon-like in nature with an absurd swashbuckling hero, outlandish action scenes and the occult theology that filmmakers love so much. (The Mummy has God-like powers, even producing Old Testament plagues.)
However, the film is too long by about 10-15 minutes and there is simply too much action and too much noise. The film needs more lulls.
Brendan Fraser is pretty good as the Indiana Jones figure and Rachel Weisz, a new face at the time, makes a solid impression in her debut. The DVD offered a sharp picture which highlighted a number of jaw-dropping scenes. It's pure escapist fun and not meant to be anything else. As in many cases, I think this was the best in this modern series, which now numbers three, I believe. I haven't received the item above, yet have had two emails to review it. If you've sent it, please verify that it has really gone out. If not, please don't send me another email. Thanks. A non-stop action movie set in Egypt! If you're expecting bandaged-wrapped corpses and a lurching Boris Karloff-type villain, then you've come to the wrong movie. But if outrageous effects, a hunky hero, and some hearty laughs are what you're looking for, the 1999 version ofThe Mummyis spectacularly good fun. Yes, the critics called it "hokey," "cheesy," and "pallid." Well, the critics are unjust. Granted, the plot tends to stray, the acting is a bit of a stretch, and the characters occasionally slip into cliché, but who cares? When that action gets going, hold tight--those two hours just fly by.The premise of the movie isn't that far off from the original. Egyptologist and general mess Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) discovers a map to the lost city of Hamunaptra, and so she hires rogue Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) to lead her there. Once there, Evelyn accidentally unlocks the tomb of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a man who had been buried alive a couple of millennia ago with flesh-eating bugs as punishment for sleeping with the pharaoh's girlfriend. The ancient mummy is revived, and he is determined to bring his old love back to life, which of course means much mayhem (including the unleashing of the 10 plagues) and human sacrifice. Despite the rather gory premise, this movie is fairly tame in terms of violence; most of the magic and surprise come from the special effects, which are glorious to watch, although Imhotep, before being fully reconstituted, is, as one explorer puts it, rather "juicy." Keep in mind this film is as much comedy as it is adventure--those looking for a straightforward horror pic will be disappointed. But for those who want old-fashioned eye-candy kind of fun,The Mummyranks as one of choicest flicks of 1999.--Jenny Brown Rerations < The Mummy [VHS] >

customer 's review (Dicken's truncated classic)
(Worthy Addition to the Univeral Horror Classics)
(DICKEN'S SWAN SONG) Claude Rains stars as opium addicted choirmaster of Cloisterham cathedral, John Jasper in the 1935 Britsh production of Dickens' dark unfinished final novel, "The Mystery of Edwin Drood". Rains is hopelessly infatuated with Rosa Budd played by Heather Angel, the fiance of his nephew Edwin Drood, played by David Manners. Unknown to him they've mutually cancelled their arranged union. Rosa had fallen in love with Neville Landless played by Douglass Montgomery, newly arrived from Ceylon to Cloisterham with his sister Helena played by Valerie Hobson.
In a jealous rage Rains kills his nephew Drood and entombs him in the catacombs courtesy of information supplied to im by the drunken caretaker Durdles played by Forrester Harvey. Rains implicates Montgomery for the crime. Rains' treachery however, will not go unpunished.
Of note was thr familiar looking face of Zeffie Tilbury playing the Opium Lady. Upon investigation she was the same actress who played Grandma in a classic 1936 Little Rascals short. My expectations weren't very high for this movie. I was expecting it to be much like THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE, having a few creepy scenes, but no good acting to make the rest of the movie interesting. EDWIN DROOD, however, succeeded on all levels. It was surprisingly funny (usually intentional) and light in certain scenes, and suberbly moody and dark in the others. The acting was excellent. I was especially impressed with Douglass Montgomery as Neville and Zeffie Tilbury as the old opium lady. But, if you're like me, you'll pick up this movie because it stars Claude Rains. And you won't be disappointed! If you think Claude Rains is talented at playing creepy, wait until you see him playing stoned and creepy! Film adaptation of Dicken's Byzantine novel about an odd, tortured, drug-addicted choirmaster who vies for the affections of an attractive young woman who is visiting his village. But when things don't go his way, he decides to eliminate what he perceives to be his only obstacle, her fiance (and his nephew), Edwin Drood. Dicken's novel was left half completed at the time of his death and simply ended with Drood missing. In both film versions (there's a 1993 British remake), it's decided that Drood is murdered, and, rather ironically, they picked the same murderer from among Dicken's stable of eccentric characters. Rains is superb in his fourth film as a opium addict (who's a cathedral choir master!) who lusts after delicate Heather Angel. During a raging storm on Christmas Eve, Rains strangles Manners and after dumping the corpse in a quicklime pit, tries to pin the murder on Montgomery. A gothic film with shadowy photography, it's pretty creepy due to its very unusual storyline and twists in logic. Rerations < Mystery of Edwin Drood [VHS] >

(Enjoyable as expected, but...)
(Early Release??) This DVD of RIFFTRAX: NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD was released a mere 9 days before Michael Jackson's untimely death and features a joke about him, a reference to the infamous "hair-on-fire" incident of the 1980's. Grab a copy of this DVD before its withdrawn and becomes a highly prized collector's item...
I somehow stumbled across this at my local Best Buy on May 11, 2009. To the best of my knowledge, it wasn't supposed to be released outside of rifftrax.com for another month. Naturally, I grabbed it quickly.
The comedy of Mike, Kevin, and Bill is solid as expected. Some of the jokes are the word-for-word exact same as in the earlier version from Legend Films, featuring only Mike Nelson's comedy track. In this version, however, the delivery of those lines is shared by Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett. Luckily, there is some new material mixed in that offsets the repeats. If you've never seen the previous version, you won't even notice.
I only had two real technical issues with this DVD. Firstly, the menu screen ran once and then stopped instead of looping back to the start. This meant that I had to start the entire DVD all over again. Secondly, the video was choppy in parts. The audio ran without issue, but some parts of the film seemed to be skipping video frames. I am not certain if this was an issue with all copies of this DVD or if it's specific to my player.
All in all, it's enjoyable and funny, a good buy for any fan of Rifftrax, Mystery Science Theater 3000, or Cinematic Titanic. Somehow I managed to purchase this at BestBuy on May 7, more than a month before it's official release? The classic zombie thriller that started it all - made new with a hilarious, rapid-fire commentary by Mike Nelson and the stars ofMystery Science Theater 3000. (back in the day)
("The Greatest Horror Film of All-Time!") The DVD came as advertised and is fine. Very, very disappointed in the vendor's shipping policy, however. Paid extra for expedited shipping based on the city listed and proximity to me. Also, paid full shipping for a second product, even though they shipped together. There was no option to save on shipping by ordering two products from the same vendor. The DVDs arrived well past the expected date and missed a critical birthday. Won't buy from this vendor again, despite the good products. The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen) (1973)- I originally saw this five star horror movie when first released in New York back in 1973. For those of you old enough to remember, I too was one of those lunatics who stood on line in the freezing cold to see this great film. Crazier still is the fact that I thought it was worth the wait at the time!
This great DVD includes some really frightening footage that was not included in the theatrical version of the movie. In addition, the entire film has been digitally restored at 1.85 and plays beautifully on a new HDTV system, filling the entire screen. Watching this film on a new large screen HDTV is just like a night out at the movies.
OMG, the scene where the crawls up the stairs like a crab gives me chills everytime I think about it... good...scary... what else you want? Maybe a nice "flaming" raspberry tea like Nate Iseminger? I remember when this move came out. Radio stations were offering money to people to go sit in a theater by themselves and watch this movie.
I went with four guys and two of them left before the movie ended. I stayed because I love horror movies. Not much on slasher films but love the suspenseful, scary ones.
My main reasoning behind the success of this movie is simple. Possession has been documented for as long as we can recall. Most horror films are about monsters and things that JUST WON'T DIE..! The Exorcist is more about a family trying to save a member from the demons that haunt us all.
The possibility that this really could happen or maybe has happened before made it even scarier.
All aspects of the movie were excellent.
Every time that I watch it, it affects me. I'm 52 years old now and it still gets to me.
Turn out the lights, turn the volume up and enjoy, if you dare. "The Exorcist" came out on Boxing Day, 1973 and immediately became a boxoffice phenomenon. Highly regarded by critics and fans as the best thriller ever made, "The Exorcist" tells of a true story in which a 12 year old girl is possessed by satan. The movie is also one of the best movies ever made, with amazing performances by all the leads, especially Ellen Burstyn who plays the mother, and Linda Blair who plays the little girl. The movie also won 2 Oscars, one for sound and the other for the screenplay. I also believe both Burstyn and Blair were robbed of Academy Awards for their roles, as some had a hard time with the posession that took place in the story. The movie is about the forces of good and evil in the world and the eventual outcome of that battle. There have also been other sequels and pre-quels to "The Exorcist", but they are all inferior to the original. The follow up "The Exorcist 2" is regarded as one of the worst films ever, although Linda Blair is in it. Ellen Burstyn refused to be a part of it as she felt the script was awful. This DVD release also features 11 minutes of extra scenes that were omitted from the original release, which also contains the horrifying "spider walk" sequence. Not appearing on this disc, unfortunately, is the amazing BBC documentary on the making of "The Exorcist", that was featured on the 1998 25th Anniversary Edition of the movie. If you can find that edition grab it as the documentary is informative and interesting. Also, Ellen Burstyn's autobiography called "Lessons In Becoming Myself" is a wonderful read and she goes into detail on how she got the role of Chris McNeil and the trouble the cast and crew found themselves in while making it. Something beyond comprehension is happening to a little girl on this street in this house. A man has been called for as a last resort to try and save her. That man is the exorcist. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 09/13/2005 Starring: Ellen Burstyn Linda Blair Run time: 132 minutes Rating: R Director: William Friedkin Director William Friedkin was a hot ticket in Hollywood after the success ofThe French Connection, and he turned heads (in more ways than one) when he decided to makeThe Exorcistas his follow-up film. Adapted by William Peter Blatty from his controversial bestseller, this shocking 1973 thriller set an intense and often-copied milestone for screen terror with its unflinching depiction of a young girl (Linda Blair) who is possessed by an evil spirit. Jason Miller and Max von Sydow are perfectly cast as the priests who risk their sanity and their lives to administer the rites of demonic exorcism, and Ellen Burstyn plays Blair's mother, who can only stand by in horror as her daughter's body is wracked by satanic disfiguration. One of the most frightening films ever made with a soundtrack that's guaranteed to curl your blood,The Exorcistwas mysteriously plagued by troubles during production, and the years have not diminished its capacity to disturb even the most stoical viewers. (Good for a quick read) Blood Lite is an anthology of short stories from some of today's most prominent horror writers. The stories in Blood Lite all have a dark humor edge to them which I think makes them more enjoyable than just pure horror. Some of the stories were really good but some were just okay. That's pretty typical of the anthologies I've read. My favorite stories in the book were "Day Off" by Jim Butcher (I'm a huge Dresden Files fan), "Hell in a Handbasket" by Lucien Soulban, "Elvis Presley and the Bloodsucker Blues" by Matt Venne, and "Dear Prudence" by Steven Savile. I was really looking forward to Charlaine Harris' contribution since I like her other work, but I was a bit disappointed with it. Blood Lite: An Anthology of Humorous Horror Stories Presented by the Horror Writers AssociationI have not had time to review the other stories in the book only Jim Butchers Day Off. If you have ever longed for a day where you wanted everything to go just right but instead received a day of chaos that never seems to end then this story will speak to you. Have you ever wondered what it would be like for werewolfs to have fleas? If you like Jim Butchers Dresden files I think you will realy like this story. Half I liked, half I didn't. It does have at least a few shorts for everyone. Worth buying? For the Amazon price, the answer is yes; especially if you are a big Urban Fantasy fan or an unpublished writer. I loved how Kelley Armstrong had Jaime Vegas teach a couple of ghosts a very important lesson. I will recommend her books to everyone I can. There are plenty of good short stories in here for a quick read for Vamp lovers! The Horror Writers Association Presents BLOOD LITE...a collection of entertaining tales that puts the fun back into dark fiction, with ironic twists and tongue-in-cheek wit to temper the jagged edge. Charlaine Harrisreveals the dark side of going green, when a quartet of die-hard environmentalists hosts a fundraiser with a gory twist in "An Evening with Al Gore"...In an all-new Dresden Files story fromJim Butcher, when it comes to tracking deadly paranormal doings, there's no such thing as a "Day Off" for the Chicago P.D.'s wizard detective, Harry Dresden...Sherrilyn Kenyonturns a cubicle-dwelling MBA with no life into a demon-fighting seraph with one hell of an afterlife in "Where Angels Fear to Tread"...Celebrity necromancer Jaime Vegas is headlining a sold-out séance tour, but behind the scenes, a disgruntled ghost has a bone to pick, inKelley Armstrong's"The Ungrateful Dead." I actually got this one in paperback form from another site, but loved it. The villian in this one is ultra-cool, almost in a psychotic "Joker" sort of way, but he continues to mutate throughout the book. He goes from psychotic to ultra hulk style then to something completely different towards the end making him harder to stop. There's a good hero and some enjoyable side characters too and the action seems to be non-stop! I love a good roller coaster ride and people who like a high octane thriller with a little fantasy thrown in will enjoy this one too. Feeling sure he has finally cracked the secrets of man's evolution, Dr. Trenton Hallowed uses himself as a guinea pig for his new genetic mutagen. He soon finds himself upon the threshold of unbelievable power. But a vicious beast is waking within him. An increasing number of people turn up brutally murdered in the lower districts of the city as Trenton celebrates new success. Jonathan Hallowed, the victim of a mob hit during one of Trenton Hallowed's exhibitions, wakes in a morgue drawer wrapped in a body bag. His flesh is riddled with bullet wounds, yet he lives. Jonathan must figure out what has happened to him and why the police are calling his cousin Trenton a vicious murderer. Even worse, Jonathan may be the only one who can stop him. (First book and Second Series of The Noble Dead Saga)
(The writer's lost their focus)
(not what I expected)
(No one but Wynn?!?!...kind of boring) I was thoroughly pleased with this book and the continuation of the story with Wynn. Though I will miss the other main characters from the previous books, this looks to be very interesting with a lot of focus on magic.
What I liked most is the main character, Wynn, not being a very strong or physically able character, so she has to fight the enemy with her smarts and magic, which is a great change of pace from the usual physical bouts in most fantasy adventure books.
I can't wait for the next one. In series one staring Magiere and Leesil. Magiere a Dhampir, a child that is born of a living mother and a vampire father. Who is by nature the only thing that can kill a vampire almost bare-handed. Leesil, her companion and later lover and husband is half human and half Elf. Trained to be the ultimate assassin. Together with a half Fae, half dog named Chap, they are joined by Wynn Hygeorht a sage on her first journey to find history, written or oral of the people of the lands. The first series ends with them finding one of the "Nobel Undead" living in and Ice Castle in the frozen waste lands. Within is the forgotten history and Wynn takes all she can carry of the scrolls stored there. Magiere and Leesil obtain an orb that must be hidden and kept safe. They all make it back to home base and Wynn is sent back to Calm Seatt, home of the Guild of Sagecraft, bearing the texts written by vampires in vampire blood. The first book in this new series has Wynn being treated like she is delusional by her superiors and they seize both the texts and her personal journals. Wynn is kept from reading any of the translations or even seeing them. Then Wynn finds out that without her permission they have been sending the texts out to scriptoriums for copying. Now several of the sages sent to pickup the copies are killed and the copies are now missing. Wynn teams up with and old enemy/friend Chane, who is one of Nobel Undead, to stop the killings and to have her property returned. Barb&J.C. Hendee write very detailed involved books. They are not light reading, but they are worth every minute you spend perusing the pages of these excellent novels. I can't wait to see what is in store for Wynn in the next book of The Noble Dead! I began reading these authors with the creation of the Noble series because the dialogue and interaction between the characters was engaging, amusing and thought provoking. Somewhere from book 1 to now, they have gravely lost that chemistry that made the books good. The book didn't pick up where it should of. Neither of the real main characters were in it. I have become a fan of the Noble Dead series and this is an spin off/offshoot from that series that frankly should have been pointed out. Wynn alone with Chane a bit and all the rest new characters...ho hum. At times I found myself putting it down because I was bored and I can't say I even remember the ending well - why because it was incredible boring and not one thing was "taken" care of...no one dies but minor characters you could care less about. I say next series have Wynn drained and left for a husk. Just not a compelling character to keep around let alone base a whole book off of.
I'll wait for the paperback of the next novel just to make sure it is better than this one. The national bestselling Noble Dead saga isone of those [series] for which the term dark fantasy was definitely intended (Chronicle).
After her adventures with Magiere and Leesil, Wynn Hygeorht has returned to the Guild of Sagecraft, bearing texts supposedly penned by vampires from the time of the Forgotten History and the Great War. Seized by the Guilds scholars and sent out for copying without Wynns consent, several pages disappearand the two sages charged with conveying these pages are murdered. Suspicious of the Guild, separated from the only friends she fully trusts, and convinced the Noble Dead are responsible for the killings, Wynn embarks on a quest to uncover the secrets of the texts. (Very Goog)
(why make a game if you dont want to try and make it decent)
(Definitely Could've Been Better)
(Could be a REAL game...) I didn't play this game only review a little, but I think a nice game specially to mature audience. I didn't have problems with receive this product, arrive before the suggest date. I like buy in Amazon. The game is very good, the graphics are nice and the way it develops is great. story was decent graphics are weak, controls are awful, and the game play is almost as bad, paid 50 dollars for the game tried to sell it back the week it came out they only offered 9 dollars so i deceided to keep it, regretting that now, this game is so bad is should be recalled This game looked amazing when it first came out, I wanted to buy it as soon as it did. Thankfully I waited a bit and only paid $20, which in my opinion is still a little much for this particular title. The graphics are certainly not as good as they could be. Fine I guess I could deal with that. An accurate way to describe this game is an interactive movie with puzzles. You can't make a wrong move. If you do, you die. Simple. What gets on my nerves are these little mini games that they added so you actually think you're doing something. They are simple puzzles in the sense of figuring out what to do but really frustrating.
The controls are very difficult to get used to as well. Personally I get dizzy when it's required to move him in first person. And the gun use is not accurate at all. As long as you shoot in the zombie's general direction you should be good. But you do need to stop fighting, (and during this time you are getting attacked) take out the gun, switch to first-person, aim, and finally shoot. Not to mention how hard it is to drive the stupid cars with the Wii controls.
The save points are another thing that kill me. It only saves at the most inconvenient moments. Right before the loooong cutscene, or right before a series of jumps you need to make before something falls on your head. And you can't save it on your own time. I don't even know why it has a save option in the menu.
I know this is a rated M game, but the constant swearing annoys me. They are just trying to make this seem like a good game so people would buy it. It's not. Swearing or no swearing, stupid little puzzles or no puzzles, this is just not a good game. I'm still playing it, however it sounds like "run, run, run..." and that's all. All the things you need to do are pretty obvious and there's low interaction. just a poor game for wii. There's something strange and frightening happening in the middle of New York City's Central Park; something whispered to have been intentionally kept secret; something that players are compelled to explore inAlone in the Dark.Known today as a safe haven for New Yorkers yearning for relief from the stresses of their chaotic metropolis, history records that Central Park was built on a useless swamp, yet as the New York City skyline hurtled towards the sky over the last 150 years, making the city the most expensive real estate in the world, the park has remained untouched. Why? Civic pride? Perhaps, but the recent strange happenings in and around the park are casting doubt on that, doubts that require investigating.
The return of an iconic series |
Paranormal PI Edward Carnby. View larger. | Stunningly spooky views of NYC. View larger. | The odd wildlife of Central Park. View larger. | A whole new inventory system. View larger. | Enter Edward Carnby, Paranormal Investigator Despite the title,Alone in the Darkis actually the fifth game in a series that dates back to 1992 and centers around the experiences of Edward "the reptile" Carnby. A paranormal investigator by trade, Carnby is looking for answers to the strange events and horrific creatures reported in and around the park, but gets more than he bargained for when all the mysteries and terrors of the park spill out over the course of one apocalyptic night. It's the player's task to avoid the new frightening dangers of the park as you search for the answers to what these supernatural occurrences mean and why they are happening.Gameplay Based on Full Player Immersion Packed full of action and vivid in its realismAlone in the Darkgoes to the extreme to keep players engaged and immersed by plunging them into the heart of the action in real-time at every turn and challenging them to survive using full movement control. The goal here is to allow players to do or at least feel that they can do more or less whatever is possible in real life, within the game.Need to avoid a blast of steam or an eruption of fire that has shot up in your path? You can simply side-step it or you can handle the obstacle with a little more panache by using the environment around you, for example by swinging around it using reachable pipes or wires. In another situation you may be challenged by attacking monsters. No problem. You can take the path of least resistance, again by side-stepping them or placing an obstacle between yourself and them, but if you are feeling like taking out a little aggression you can pick up a board, chair, box, etc. and have at it. Nearly anything that you come across that would be usable in real life is usable in game and can be wielded in several different ways.In addition, game developer Eden Studios has done away with a few in-game conventions in favor of real life upgrades. Instead of old-fashioned health barsAlone in the Darkuses realistic body damage and physiological effects to show players how much damage has been done to Carnby by the new dangerous nightlife of Central Park. Basically this means if Carnby has been taking a licking he's going to be a little bloody. Monsters use sensory perception of all kinds to find their victims, so players need to keep aware of Carnby's physical state, as well as the impact he has on his surroundings. Also gone are traditional inventory systems that take players out of the game while you switch or check items in your possession, replaced by an in-game inventory system where items are carried in the folds of Carnby's trench coat. This allows you to stay in the action the whole time. Sticking with the realism theme, the number of items that Carnby can carry is limited, but since ingenuity is built into the system, items can be combined or their uses altered, mostly with tape, so players can adjust as challenges arise.TV Style Intensity That Keeps You Hooked Built around a unique television style episodic narrative game structure, the storyline ofAlone in the Darkis split into a number of distinct 30-40 minute episodes, doled out one at a time as you play. This new way to progress through the storyline ensures that players can enjoy the game regardless of the amount of time they have available without ever feeling lost. Each time a saved game is launched, the episode will begin with a video summary of the previous episode to quickly re-immerse the player in the story, removing the need to remember where you were or what you were doing at the end of your last play session. In addition, every episode will also close with a nail-biting, cliff-hanger ending to rattle players' nerves. And when you choose to leave the game, a video teaser of the next episode will play to leave players always wanting more.Vivid Photographic Rendering Even on a bad day, and this will be a bad one, Central Park and New York City are something to see. With Game developer Eden's proprietary Twilight technology and rendering engine, players can expect to see everything from the City's famous landmarks to the manifestations of the evil that have been festering in Central Park come to life as if you were there. This lavishly detailed game world takes advantage of highly realistic and advanced cinematographic effects including depth of field, camera focus, numerous light sources, moisture, reflections and High Dynamic Range effects.Whether it's the innovative game play, the unique episodic game structure, the advanced physics or the return of a ground-breaking protagonist recast in the modern era,Alone in the Darkholds something for players willing to take on the mysteries and dangers at the heart of Central Park. Uncover the earth-shattering secret hidden in New York's iconic Central Park in Alone In The Dark. History records that Central Park was built on a useless swamp, yet as the New York City skyline hurtled towards the sky over the last 150 years, making the city the most expensive real estate in the world, the park has remained untouched. (xmas gift for 13 year old niece...)
(Love It) Bought this as a gift. Only saw it played so havnt done it myself...but the ones who played it says it great. It is what it is. I bought this game for my 10 year old daughter who is a big fan of the goosebumbs book series. She loves the game. Lots of smaller carnival games to play inside of game to earn frights to be able to enter other parts of the park. I would recommend this game to anyone who is a goosebumbs fan. I had not heard of this video game until I ran across it at Amazon. My boys love the Goosebump books and the tv shows. I thought they would love to have a Playstation game like that too. We got it for Xmas and they are enjoying the different monsters and challenges. I am happy with my purchase. I sent this as a gift to my niece for christmas. She called about an hour after opening it to say she, her 9 yr old brother, and 10 year old sister LOVED THE COOL GAME!!!!! Fun-filled games are hard to come by these days, and Goosebumps HorrorLandseems to keep the interest. My niece said its like being in a haunted house...but more funny than scary. My whole family is HUGE goosebumps fans. The game is very cool and addicting. There are tons of rides and games you have to conquer in order to move on to other rides and games. The graphics aren't the best, but this is for PS2 not PS3. So for PS2, it is great.
Lots of fun. If you enjoy lots of minigame type games, you will love this. Goosebumps HorrorLand is an adventure game set in a fright-themed amusement park filled with over thirty thrilling rides and bone-chilling attractions. Sounds like fun--until you discover the scares are all too real and find yourself vanquishing vampires, hanging on for life on the Roller Ghoster and battling Certain Death. As you fiendishly try to escape the park, you will unravel a mystery, encounter a host of creepy horrors, monsters and mummies plus trademark Goosebumps twists and cliffhangers. Goosebumps HorrorLand offers suspense, tension, humor, and pulse-pounding action.

(Everything you wanted to know about the slasher films but was afraid to ask)
(A wonderful documentary on the 80's Horror Films)
(A MUST for any Slasher fan)
(not everything is cut out) I had this show on dvr for a long time, it was a great film. I recently purchased the film on dvd and boy what a mess this film is! Everything is scattered and hard to follow. They should have started off with Pyscho and then went thru the 70's, starting with the slasher film Black Christmas. Halloween is an excellent film and most consider it the first slasher film, which is fine but Black Christmas cannot be ignored. They show lots of good clips but like I said, the story is all over the place and makes no sense. The end of the documentary was like every other documentary ive seen-starts strong and ends quickly. The 90's brought the death of many horror icons-Pinhead (who was omitted from the film for no reason), Freddy, Jason, Myers, and Leatherface. Then its revived for Scream and the genere is forever ruined. Now we have rappers and tv stars who are hot at the moment starring in horror films, pg-13 horror films that come out on dvd unrated, straight to dvd horror films that are sometimes good and most often bad. Friday The 13th is the most ripped off movie but there are some good movies based on it. I love horror but this is not the movie you want to see if you want a soild look at films. It has great clips and maybe some you want to check out for yourself. If you are a long time horror fan like myself, or if your new to this stuff and want to learn more the slasher films look no further. Going To Pieces, is one of the most interesting and most comprehensive documentaries you can ever see! This films covers just about everything you want to know about the slasher genre, it explains it's early beginnings, the key slasher films that the genre on the map and the s**tstorm of controversy that it caused with parents and critics alike. you hear from actors, producers and directors who made the films and was apart of the slasher phenomenon of the 1980's, it even the bets bits from each slasher films they talk about.
There are so many good things I can say about this film, but in short all I can say about this film that it is worth watching, for any one who wants to relive the nostalgia of the good old days of slasher films, or for anyone who is new it is worth buying. A documentary that took some time making and well done. It documents the 80's horror film scene and covers about every film that was important. The lighting is wonderful and the interviews are super. A fun watch. I had no idea the film was done by ARI LEHMAN (The first Jason) of the Friday the 13th movie PART ONE. NICE JOB ARI !! Going To Pieces"The rise and Fall of the Slasher" This is a MUST HAVE for any Slasher,Horror or Gore hound. It traces the controversial roots of the Slasher all the while showing interviews with Horror icons ,Make up artists, directors etc,. It also shows some of the best and goriest scenes form some of the best slasher flicks from the 60's to the present. I have watched it so many times and each time I see something new that I missed the first time,it also pays special attention to the films that have become classics and discusses the reasons why they are so endeared and have stood the test of time. It's the best compilation of horror gore clips I have ever seen in one movie.
I recently got this movie. And I had seen it about a year ago I couldn't remember any nudity being shown. So in light of it being the halloween season I was looking forward to showing this to my kids in a sort of educational review of the genre. And I couldn't find any mention to content - other than what I knew was going to be in there, gore.
Well although they did cut out most sexual content they left about 6 female frontal shots in. Most of it is pretty brief, except one.
Don't get me wrong, the sexual content is probably one of the main reasons as a teen I started watching horror movies! But for what I was wanting the movie for -helping spread the love of horror- I needed something without nudity or very brief nudity.
I guess the main problem is that there is no mention of this content ANYWHERE on the web. So I'm adding it here so no one else is left clueless.
But then again, how many parents have their Disney/Nickelodeon watching kids sit down and watch clips of some of the greatest horror movies ever made days before halloween? probably not many. Every fear youve ever felt. Every evil youve witnessed. Every nightmare youve ever known have come together for the first time in one film. This is the ultimate anthology that takes you on a horrifying journey through your favorite slasher films.
