(Please make it PG-13)

(Bad movie for young kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

(Scooby's Ultimate Movie, But Beware.)

(ALERT!!!!!!!! this isn't for young children!!!!)

(Welcome back Scooby-Doo)
This is definitely Scary. For young children this movie is way too scary and my kids don't freak to easily.

I can see how others like it. But becareful how you intriduce it to your child.

Mr. Timothy Lee-you should be ashamed to let your 4 year old watch this movie over and over. This movie crosses many lines of cartoon and horror flick. Compared to the other Scooby movies, this is more graphic and not quite so much fun. It is fine for teens and up, but get real. This shouldn't be a movie called a 'family' movie, and you should be doing the responsible thing and knowing what is OK and what isn't for young children to watch. Your 4 year old relies on you to be his parent-so be one!
For some time Scooby Doo was all but retired and made a brief comeback with "Laughalympics." In 1998, the original Scooby Doo gang would reunite to make this phenomenal movie. But do beware. PG 13 would probably be a more appropriate rating for this movie. It goes to levels Scooby Doo never before went. And while well done, it would probably be a good idea for parents to screen it first and then decide if it is appropriate for children. Well, that said, this Scooby movie is quite arguably Scooby's greatest movie. To make sense of Scooby's long retirement, there is a flashback with Scooby and the gang solving yet another mystery. Some time passes, and the gang has went their seperate ways. Daphne and Fred have a television show and decide they want to see some real ghosts. Except for Fred, the voice casting is different. But they did a good job of finding voices that at least resembled the original voices. (If it's any comfort, the original voice cast would eventually reunite for the 5th and 6th movies.) Moving on, the gang does get back together, and they head towards New Orleans in hopes of seeing some real ghosts. (2 of the 5 parties are of course reluctant. Guess which 2.) Down in Louisiana, they find some more cases of just 'bad guys in masks.' Later they meet Lena who flirts with Fred and offers to show them her employer's (Simone's) haunted house. They also meet Jaques who seems nice enough and the gardener who does not seem so nice. After Scooby fights with Simone's cats, Simone is understandably annoyed, but she agrees to let the gang in. Soon afterwards, we see some things that appear to indicate the presence of ghosts, but as any Scooby fan knows, there might be a rational explanation, and if so, what is the motive? Scooby and Shaggy offer some comical moments with their too healthy appetities. Soon afterwards, clues start appearing that would make us suspect that some real ghosts are involved, but there is some room for doubt. One thing about this Scooby movie is that the expansion from 30 minutes to 90 or so is a good one. It gives us time to remeet the gang, and time to wonder if the ghosts are real or not, and enjoy some welcome suspense as well. Of all Scooby's adventures, this is one of the LEAST contrived and predictable. Another thing you will notice in this Scooby movie is a surprisingly intense soundtrack. (And I had NO problem whatsoever with that!) In a typical Scooby fashion, the gang gets separated and the horror unfolds. This is one ending I won't give away. But I will say true horror unfolds as we find that surprises shock us for a moment, but then make sense upon discovery. The explosion of misleads enables us to say: "Oh! No wonder!" In all honesty, this movie is more frightening than a lot of so called horror on the market. And perhaps the most frightening moment in this movie is when the 'villain' explains the events that preceeded that of the movie. Good writers seem to know that recognition is often the most horror filled aspect of a story. Again, I consider this a strong contender for Scooby's greatest movie, but do be warned. It may very well be too much for young children.
this is not a movie for kids! it has real monsters (i know the box tells you that but the art of the film is very grapic and the story is very much ment for adults) so be sure you watch this movie before you show it to kids.
now as for the movie it's self it really isn't very good and isn't part of the scooby-doo series as far as i see it!!! just plain not good!!!!!!!!

I've been watching Scooby-Doo for more than 20 years, it's one of my favorite cartoon shows, when it was really a good show, before that stupid Scrappy came into the show.

Anyway, the Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island is one of my favorite movies. When they decide to get back the Scooby show again and the movies, this was the first one, back in 1999. Like I said, for me is the best one. I like the new look on the characters, the story, everything.

If I were going to end the Scooby-Doo show (and the movies) forever, this should have been the last movie or last episode of the show. I mean, it's been a couple of years since the gang were split, and they reunite for like a one last mystery and the cool thing is that this time, the monsters are real. Some people didn't like that, but that's the cool part of the movie.

Besides all that, the animation is very cool, like watching some anime movie, the colors area great, the music, everything, it's just Scooby-Doo.

Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Daphne and Fred reunite to solve the most frightfully funny mystery of their careers. The scream team's headed to a haunted bayou island to investigate the ghost of Moonscar the Pirate. But it turns out the swashbuckler's spirit isn't the only creepy character on the island.

(Time For Go To Bed!)

(Tor-O! Tor-Uh oh!)

(Dangerous Movie, great treatment)

(Some good, some bad.)

(Mrs. Bates! Mrs. Bates!)
I'm a big MST3K fan, but I admit this one had to grow on me a bit, but I love it now. Tor Johnson is obviously amazing as always and he carries the film. Either way it is worth it for the shorts at the beginning. Posture Pals and Appreciating Your Parents are two of the best. Could you be one of the Posture Posse? Think about it won't you? Push the Button Frank!
Sure, The Unearthly is a bad movie, but I can't say I have ever noticed any gaps in the comedic antics of Joel and the Bots. To my mind, this is one of the better (but not most outstanding) MST3K episodes made available commercially. Heck, it's got Tor Johnson, which is more than a lot of bad movies can say. Tor even gets a few lines here, including the eminently quotable"Time for go to bed."Then there's John Carradine, a decent actor who looks creepy enough to adequately fill the shoes of the overzealous yet typical mad scientist intent on achieving human immortality. The doctor's technique does have its risks, though; while it seems to consist of implanting an animate piece of link sausage he calls the 17th gland into a patient, shocking the dickens out of him/her with electricity, then letting the patient simmer for eight hours, it inevitably accomplishes only heretofore unheard of physical mutilations. But let me summarize the plot in Tor fashion: Tor work hard for crazy science man; catch man in garden; bring man to boss; Tor like pretty girl; pretty girl turn ugly; put man in ground; Tor get hit on head; Tor no remember rest.

The Unearthly is (mercifully) a pretty short movie; we are doubly lucky in this regard because it allows Dr. Forrester to slip in two great shorts before the film. Posture Pals is one of my favorite MTS3K shorts, while Appreciating Your Parents is a humorous attempt to indoctrinate children with an adult work ethic for performing household chores. The skits are also quality entertainment, especially the prologue in which the Bots film a"spontaneous"video (for America's Goofiest Home Videos) of Crow as a three-year-old girl sitting atop a stack of pajamas-filled boxes which Servo sets on fire. I've watched this particular 3rd-season MST3K experiment a number of times, and I still find it funny and enjoyable.
As several reviewers just said, the two opening shorts are brilliant, packed with laughs, so if you want two great shorts, just buy it for that. The movie riff-age is pretty good, but the movie itself is very painful, and the riffing drops off at some points leaving you alone with the movie... a very scary position. However, if you have a tolerance for ultra bad movies this episode is pretty good.

So, buy it for the shorts, stay for the movie-- but beware..
Greetings from Tromaville!

The opening two PSA's are hilarious, but the feature is so dull(even with The MST3K Posse), that I take away three stars. Buy it if it's the final MST3K video you need for your collection.

This was the very first MST3K I ever saw and I thought it was hilarious! The two shorts were among the best they ever did. (Only the"Cheating"short before"Wild World of Batwoman"was funnier.)

While it is true that at times Joel and the Bots did have trouble making cracks at the movie, the movie itself was funny enough by itself to keep my laughing. Tor Johnson himself made my sides hurt at times."Time to go to bed"is still probably the best and most well-known MST tagline. Carradine on the organ doing his best Beethoven, the Confuso-vision type of filming, the endless rooms of the house ("There's is an outside! There's an outside!"), the bullet bra babes, and the hyper-active palooka (Who gets shot without the benefit of a bullet hole on his body) all made me a MSTie overnight!

I highly reccommend this episode for people who have never seen MST3K before.

(Nice.)

(Is it inventory time already?)
An evil spirit. Hot chicks in lingerie. And machine guns. What more could you ask for?
I have to say it doesn't get much better than this folks. A group of young women are stuck in a building doing inventory of lingerie when one by one they start to die. The cover has nothing to do with this movie which is actually the third installment in the brilliant Sorority House Massacre series. The back of the video box shows scenes that weren't in the movie at all and make it sound like the next"Die Hard". All the actresses have returned from the second movie but they all have different names and no connections to the murders that occured. Bizarre...yes, completely stupid...absolutely, the best movie of 1993...no contest. The director seems to have a certain skill with lengthy shower scenes. Using this technique he disguises the fact that this film seems to have no point. Hopefully"Orville"will return in another Sorority House movie but until then we still have this epic masterpiece.

(Best Sequel)

(ANOTHER PRECIOUS EDITION)

(Great Movie.)

(Loved every minute)

(Lord of the Rings - Two Towers DVD)
As in Fellowship, this is a great movie. Will be a classic. Although it varries from the book, it is a good movie in its own right.
In this second film of the Lord of The Rings trilogy, the Fellowship continue their journey to defeat the Dark Lord Sauron and bring peace to Middle Earth.Much like the first film,The Two Towers finds our heroes fighting even more epic battles and meeting new and amazing characters. The acting is still spot-on and the special effects/enormous sets and overwhelming battle sequences are just as maginificently well done as always. This extended edition adds over 40 minutes of footage not seen in the theatrical version and not a second of it works against the overall film. Each new moment only proves this edition's superiority in both character development and action.Like the extended editions of the other two films,The Two Towers comes loaded with special features. There are two disks packed with hours of video documentaries on the design and construction of clothes/sets/weapons and behind the scenes of most of the film's battles and all processes involved such as choreography, editing and scoring. There are also hundreds of design sketches and stills that can be viewed individually. All in all,it's a superior edition in every way, providing much more thrills and adventure than the theatrical version.
Again the extended version adds to the story. This version helps the Lord Of The Rings along by adding back scenes that add to the storyline and help get it closer to the book. I have both the movie release and this one and I, by far, like this one best!
The Two Towers is a worthy follow-up to the Fellowship of the Rings. Acting, scenery, make-up, everything is top-notch, and Peter Jackson has truly brought Tolkien's masterpiece to life on the big screen. Whether you are a Tolkien fan, or simply enjoy an engrossing film experience, The Two Towers is definitely worthy of your attention. Thank you Mr. Jackson!
The DVD arrived from the dealer ahead of schedule and the quality of the DVD was excellent. It was a used DVD, but there were no scratches on the disk and everything including the case looked like new.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towersis a seamless continuation of Peter Jackson's epic fantasy based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. After the breaking of the Fellowship, Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) journey to Mordor to destroy the One Ring of Power with the creature Gollum as their guide. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) join in the defense of the people of Rohan, who are the first target in the eradication of the race of Men by the renegade wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee) and the dark lord Sauron. Fantastic creatures, astounding visual effects, and a climactic battle at the fortress of Helm's Deep makeThe Two Towersa worthy successor toThe Fellowship of the Ring, grander in scale but retaining the story's emotional intimacy. These two films are perhaps the greatest fantasy films ever made, but they're merely a prelude to the cataclysmic events ofThe Return of the King.--David Horiuchi
Frodo Baggins and the Fellowship continue their quest to destroy the One Ring and stand against the evil of the dark lord Sauron. The Fellowship has divided and now find themselves taking different paths to defeating Sauron and his allies. Their destinies now lie at two towers - Orthanc Tower in Isengard, where the corrupted wizard Saruman waits and Sauron's fortress at Baraddur, deep within the dark lands of Mordor.

(Horrible, Horrible game play and the rest is even worse ...)

(Good, with a few setbacks, but still a great game.)

(Warning: Bad console port!)

(Case study in potential ruination with bad controls)

(Amazing Graphics, Terrible Gameplay)
Now the guy who coded the physics should be centenced to keep 100 feet away from any programmable equipment (that includes microwaves, alarm clocks, mobile phones etc.) in order not to cause any other person to get online at this hour of the night on Amazon and leave such a comment in absolute fury! I didn't pay money to be tamed to learn how to deal with this awful user interface, so called physics and horrible controls! I didn't pay any money to repeat the same routine for over 6 or 7 times just because I can not understand how the wierd physics work in the game. After a couple of times it is no fun anymore and just because I couldn't do all the terrible stuff that I am asked to perform in a mind boggling precision, it shouldn't keep me away from playing the rest of the game. The money I have paid is for the whole game, not till the first failure of the physics and the user interface! These guys should be ashamed of themselves and leave this line of bussiness gracefully otherwise the only thing that they can do with their "title" is to sit at a bar and try to impress girls by calling themselves "programmers" which they are far from it.
Alone in the dark was different for me, as I have never played any other in the series. I was expecting something much different since I played the Wii version before, which sucked.

Gameplay- Playing the game involves some cool puzzles, but some areas are frustrating! (one are I spent around an hour on even though it lasted only a few minutes, it was the first major driving scene). One interesting aspect is that the standard enemies (I saw them called humanz in a walkthrough) can only be killed by fire (with the stronger ones requiring more fire introduced before dying). The driving aspect of the game is cool, as the physics aren't the most realistic, but thats not really a bad aspect of a game which most of the game is spent on foot. The game is different from other survival horror games because you get more than enough ammo, so you can be creative (shooting doors apart when you dont have time for example). The healing system is cool, I like the difference from when it is a small wound or a bleeding one (which can only be treated with the rare bandage, and you leave a blood trail which attracts monsters). The 3rd person cam is almost impossible to use, so I go to my preferred view of first person.

Graphics- Not the best, but they are good enough for me to get an easy grasp on the world around me, and also good enough to look into detail on objects. The fire doesn't look the best, but we have been spoiled with games like Far Cry 2 and such (both games have fire which spreads realistically, but Far Cry has better graphics, being newer).

Features- items play a large role in this game, and with a limited inventory (nope, no more carrying 1 ton with elder scrolls, still that is a good game series though, elder scrolls) you must decide what you most need, whether you use your flashlight and need batteries, or you load up on ammunition. The game also uses combining items as an important feature, such as moving a the liquid from a 3/10 full bottle to a 7/10 full bottle for a full bottle that is more explosive (when shot or used as a molotov). Also, you can use the liquid on explosive bottles to pour on you ammunition giving you 1 clip load of incendiary rounds (as in they damage those humanz, if you shoot em in the right place, or they set a wooden object on fire from far away) which arent realistic, but they are awesome!

In conclusion, alone in the dark 5 is a great game with a few flaws that require patience, the tab key, and maybe a walkthrough (which won't ruin the game... they never get it thorough enough to do THAT).

Do not waste your time. This thing SCREAMS "bad console port". While the controls supposedly support both first-person and third-person views, the first-person one only lacks visible duct-tape to show how badly it was grafted on. If you try to use first-person view, it automatically switches you to third-person view at the worst possible time (like when you are in a fight). In some cases, it won't even allow you to switch back to first-person view until you solve the current puzzle or win the fight you are in. The controls are just plain bad. Want to use the standard "WASL" keys to move around? Sorry, those only work in third-person view! So, when it switches view for you, YOUR CURRENT MOVEMENT KEYS STOP WORKING!

Don't even get me started on the difficulty of dragging bodies around, which you are required to do to kill them. Or the time the bad guy got stuck INSIDE A WALL, WHICH MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO TO KILL HIM! I had to go back to the last FIXED save point and start the encounter all over again. Oh, I didn't mention the supposed quick-save doesn't actually save you where you are, but back at the last "planned" save point? Um, neither does the manual.

There are many other bad points to this game, but I have already wasted enough time just trying to play it. Save your money. Buy something else.

This is a very memorable game for me. It's the only game that I actually quit playing because of the bad controls. I almost gave up on Shadow of the Colossus because of crap controls, but at least there was somewhat of a payoff for muddling through. Not here. Classic case of development culture ignoring the value of "average joe" usability testing. I bet when they finally did get to external user testing and realized "oohhhhhh crap", the shrink wrap machine was already heating up.
You can just tell that this game was ported to PC (very badly) from the console games. The keys are so random and most cannot be configured. You cannot strafe unless in the first person view, but the first person view doesn't allow you to do much of anything except walking, and within a few seconds the game will switch you back to the third person view. I usually stick with a game even if it doesn't seem great, but I barely played this for a half hour before I quit. The first 15 minutes or so of the game require you to press a key to blink every few seconds or your vision gets blurred, which makes it extremely hard to pay attention to the story line. The only plus was that the graphics look amazing, especially the detail of people's faces.
There's something strange and frightening happening in the middle of New York City's Central Park; something whispered to have been intentionally kept secret; something that players are compelled to explore inAlone in the Dark.

Known today as a safe haven for New Yorkers yearning for relief from the stresses of their chaotic metropolis, history records that Central Park was built on a useless swamp, yet as the New York City skyline hurtled towards the sky over the last 150 years, making the city the most expensive real estate in the world, the park has remained untouched. Why? Civic pride? Perhaps, but the recent strange happenings in and around the park are casting doubt on that, doubts that require investigating.

Enter Edward Carnby, Paranormal Investigator
Despite the title,Alone in the Darkis actually the fifth game in a series that dates back to 1992 and centers around the experiences of Edward "the reptile" Carnby. A paranormal investigator by trade, Carnby is looking for answers to the strange events and horrific creatures reported in and around the park, but gets more than he bargained for when all the mysteries and terrors of the park spill out over the course of one apocalyptic night. It's the player's task to avoid the new frightening dangers of the park as you search for the answers to what these supernatural occurrences mean and why they are happening.

Gameplay Based on Full Player Immersion
Packed full of action and vivid in its realismAlone in the Darkgoes to the extreme to keep players engaged and immersed by plunging them into the heart of the action in real-time at every turn and challenging them to survive using full movement control. The goal here is to allow players to do or at least feel that they can do more or less whatever is possible in real life, within the game.

Need to avoid a blast of steam or an eruption of fire that has shot up in your path? You can simply side-step it or you can handle the obstacle with a little more panache by using the environment around you, for example by swinging around it using reachable pipes or wires. In another situation you may be challenged by attacking monsters. No problem. You can take the path of least resistance, again by side-stepping them or placing an obstacle between yourself and them, but if you are feeling like taking out a little aggression you can pick up a board, chair, box, etc. and have at it. Nearly anything that you come across that would be usable in real life is usable in game and can be wielded in several different ways.

In addition, game developer Eden Studios has done away with a few in-game conventions in favor of real life upgrades. Instead of old-fashioned health barsAlone in the Darkuses realistic body damage and physiological effects to show players how much damage has been done to Carnby by the new dangerous nightlife of Central Park. Basically this means if Carnby has been taking a licking he's going to be a little bloody. Monsters use sensory perception of all kinds to find their victims, so players need to keep aware of Carnby's physical state, as well as the impact he has on his surroundings. Also gone are traditional inventory systems that take players out of the game while you switch or check items in your possession, replaced by an in-game inventory system where items are carried in the folds of Carnby's trench coat. This allows you to stay in the action the whole time. Sticking with the realism theme, the number of items that Carnby can carry is limited, but since ingenuity is built into the system, items can be combined or their uses altered, mostly with tape, so players can adjust as challenges arise.

TV Style Intensity That Keeps You Hooked
Built around a unique television style episodic narrative game structure, the storyline ofAlone in the Darkis split into a number of distinct 30-40 minute episodes, doled out one at a time as you play. This new way to progress through the storyline ensures that players can enjoy the game regardless of the amount of time they have available without ever feeling lost. Each time a saved game is launched, the episode will begin with a video summary of the previous episode to quickly re-immerse the player in the story, removing the need to remember where you were or what you were doing at the end of your last play session. In addition, every episode will also close with a nail-biting, cliff-hanger ending to rattle players' nerves. And when you choose to leave the game, a video teaser of the next episode will play to leave players always wanting more.

Vivid Photographic Rendering
Even on a bad day, and this will be a bad one, Central Park and New York City are something to see. With Game developer Eden's proprietary Twilight technology and rendering engine, players can expect to see everything from the City's famous landmarks to the manifestations of the evil that have been festering in Central Park come to life as if you were there. This lavishly detailed game world takes advantage of highly realistic and advanced cinematographic effects including depth of field, camera focus, numerous light sources, moisture, reflections and High Dynamic Range effects.

Whether it's the innovative game play, the unique episodic game structure, the advanced physics or the return of a ground-breaking protagonist recast in the modern era,Alone in the Darkholds something for players willing to take on the mysteries and dangers at the heart of Central Park.

Alone in the Dark, the video game that launched survival gaming and set the standard within the genre, returns with an extraordinary action-packed within a highly detailed, free-roaming environment, featuring a mixture of astonishing real-time physics and full environmental interaction.

(If your into the Saturday night Scifi Channel Flicks....)

(Fabulous!!!)

(too bad ,it's not that bad!)

(Oh, my sides!)

(2.5 stars... not too bad)
... you'll enjoy this. I myself thought it was fairly amusing because i like the kinda cheesy effects these low budget films have. And i like these scifi channel movies lik rock monster and all that stuff. Over all not the best but realli depends on what you like
This film was magnificent!!! So bad, it was thrilling to watch! Loved the ridiculously over the top characters, especially the old rich lady with her frufru dog and how brilliantly rude she was to the waiter in one of the first scenes. Fabulous!!! And the chupacabra itself was hillarious!
You know there are bad movies that leave you wondering....Can I get my money back?!Then there are movies that leave you wondering,I must be the only one that thinks this movie is okay.Well,guys...this is that movie.Sure the acting is sub-standard,the special effects look like they were done in somebody's garage, but damn, this movie is okay. One of the disappointing things is the creature, boy,I've seen and read somethings about the chupacabra, but this thing on the screen looked nothing like it.Yeah, alright,I get it,scary monster, confined area, victims and heroes,BUT COME ON!at least make it resemble the beast with the title of the bloody movie mate! You should know what to expect from the sci-fi channel by now gang, bad scripts, over rated spfxs, and bad acting.Overall,I must say this movie kind'a grows on you and you get use to it.If you over look that bad acting, etc;etc;this movie could be watched with the family to a point.Gory blood, fleshing ripping monster, etc;etc.John Rhys-davies is still pretty good enough to get the movie to its climax. In short,I must say this is one of those movies that you can watch on one of those slow, rainy days.
There was a time when actor John Rhys-Davies was at the top of his game. Respected. Admired. Those days are long gone. The venerable thespian who once graced the silver screen in classic films like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" now co-stars in movies with David Charvet, Vanessa Angel, and Maxwell Caulfield. Surely it's only a matter of time before we see him alongside Casper Van Dien or Lorenzo Lamas. Don't believe me? Check out his filmography on a certain popular online movie website. His recent credits include such Sci Fi Channel fare as "Sabretooth," "Dragon Storm," and this laughable exercise in hilarious horror, "Chupacabra Terror". Additional confirmation of my charges, as though I need to provide more evidence, can be found by accessing the cast list of Uwe Boll's upcoming film "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale". There you will see Rhys-Davies's name prominently displayed. Uwe Boll! That's the kiss of death as far as I'm concerned. I understand that working as an actor in Hollywood is tough, that you take whatever roles you can get to keep the checks coming in, but appearing in a film like "Chupacabra Terror" will not win you many fans.

"Chupacabra Terror" tells the story of a crazed scientist named Pena (Giancarlo Esposito hamming it up with nary a care for his future) caught up in a quest to capture the fabulous Chupacabra. Doing so will obviously elevate his career from the dusty climes of academia to superstar status. Interviews. Book deals. A movie of the week. Think of the fame and fortune if he can only catch one of these critters! With that in mind, we see Pena launching an expedition somewhere in South America in an effort to capture the Chupacabra. And after the beast slays a substantial number of his heavily armed hunters, the good doctor does just that. Now he must sneak the beastie on board a ship captained by a chap called Randolph (Rhys-Davies channeling Captain Stubing). Just in case the audience gets bored, there's a subplot involving a U.S. Marshal named Lance (Dylan Neal) investigating a robbery aboard the ship. Could the criminal in question be conniving Rick McGraw (David Millbern)? Who knows. What I can say is that Randolph's daughter Jenny (Chelan Simmons) also works on the ship as a Tae Bo instructor. I know what you're thinking. Forget it--her fit figure doesn't save the film.

So now we're on the boat. A couple of stupid idiots manage to release the Chupacabra from a box that boasts more warning signs than a barrel of toxic waste. Predictably, the beast kills these dolts and then proceeds to rampage around the ship. Meanwhile, Randolph entertains Rick, Lance, his daughter, Dr. Pena, and the elderly Mrs. Voorhees (Paula Shaw) at the captain's table. The only thing missing here is Gopher, Doc, and Julie from "The Love Boat". Anyway, insipid dialogue follows. Then news of the bloody rampage unfolding below reaches the principal characters. At least I think that's what happens. All I know is that I started slipping into coma after watching Millbern try to inject his character with something resembling charm. We soon learn that no one is safe from this supernatural creature. Worse, it's extremely difficult to kill the thing because it can crawl up walls and across the ceiling, creep around in tight spaces, and absorb all forms of punishment. Bullets, Tae Bo, electricity, acid, nuclear weapons--nothing seems to harm this bad boy. A crack team (ha!) of Navy personnel can't even stop the Chupacabra. Maybe the zipper on the costume acts as a sort of force field, eh?

What a dumb film. Director John Sheppird must have lost a bet with someone. That's the only explanation I can think of as to why he would helm this nightmare. Of course, he also wrote the script, so that might explain what's going on. Let's see...what's wrong with the picture? The acting, characters, special effects, set pieces, lighting, and just about anything else you can think of that takes place on a movie set, basically. Only Rhys-Davies manages to make anything remotely associated with this flick believable. I quickly assumed "Chupacabra Terror" was a comedy since I kept laughing until tears ran down my face. The campy looking creature. Jenny's Tae Bo combat sequences. The effeminate Rick McGraw's attempts to woo Mrs. Voorhees. All of these things, and so much more besides, come off as stupid, ineffectual and downright funny. Even the gore elicits more chuckles than scares. The movie's so cheap they can't even show arterial sprays; they have to toss a bucket of blood from off camera to simulate the effect. Sigh. By the time we see Rhys-Davies, with captain's hat jauntily placed on his head, watching his ship sink from a rowboat filled with survivors, I knew I was knee deep in crud cinema.

I'm going to give "Chupacabra Terror" two stars, sort of a kick in the shins from me to the movie for making me sit through ninety minutes of pure heartache. I would give it a single star, but I laughed so much that I think I should kick it up a notch. Incredibly, the experience doesn't end with the credits. The DVD version of "Chupacabra Terror" contains a short behind the scenes featurette and a commentary track! Yes, a commentary track with director/screenwriter John Sheppird and co-writer Steve Jankowski graces the disc. I gave it a listen hoping to hear an apology. Instead I heard a lot of movie mumbo jumbo that does nothing to alleviate the agony I experienced while watching this car wreck. They also failed to explain why the Navy personnel wore what looked like bicycle helmets while battling the beastie. Must have been those defense budget cuts during the Clinton years. Avoid this movie at all costs.

Not too bad of a monster movie. Its surely not the best, but with a little
gore, good actors(John Rhys-Davies) it helps this movie go from a 2 to a 2.5 score. The man in the monster suit does a pretty good job, and the
suit is well done. A better script would have helped, but with what we
have left, it is still entertaining and is good for a viewing.

(This game should be alone in the dark...)

(Dying Alone In The Dark)

(Alone In The Dark Left Me Alone In The Dark)

(Pretty BAD)

(RENT IT FIRST, BUT DONT BUY!!!!!!!!!!)
Well first let me start out, I had some high expectations for this game. I had not been a big fan of the series but I had figured this new game would warm me up to it.

This wasn't the case.

Graphic-wise: It's the standard average for a PS2 game. Nothing terrible, but nothing spectacular. I'm assuming it would be better on the PS3 or Xbox360, since they have better graphics.

Soundtrack: This is perhaps the only positive feature this game has. It had some beautifully composed moments on some scenes.

Gameplay: I found the game anything but entertaining. It felt more like a chore trying to get through levels where most of the time your obstacles are just booby traps or exploring through dark-lit locations. There are monsters here and there but they don't exactly add anything to the game. They felt more like extras. Even the boss fights consist of shooting like crazy until they fall--you'd think there would be a strategy involved since nearly the levels have strategies you need to develop to get by them.

There was nothing unique about the game that I saw made this game Alone in the Dark. It felt like an average PS2 action game you'd pick up on the shelf. Or leave on the shelf for that matter..

Story: Left much to be desired, in my opinion. The game began off at an interesting point where our hero encounters bad luck from the start but then it just went downhill from there. The characters do nothing to move the story along and were far from interesting and became boring/annoying very quickly. Edward himself hardly speaks most of the time in the game.

The story dragged on for me. I was at first interested to find out what was going on, but the levels and obstacles you had to get through to get answers and continue the story was not worth the time. The challenges are distracting and make you lose interest in playing really fast. The story could've been better played out.

After having finally beat the game, I was rewarded with more questions and a disappointing plot ending.

Technical Issues: When they say "Alone in the Dark" they aren't kidding!! The levels were so incredibly darkly-lit. Even when I turned my television brightness up, it hardly made a difference. This game didn't have a brightness control option so for the entire game I was running around blind. Not enjoyable whatsoever.

There were also moments the sound just dropped a few levels during the game. So I had to turn up the volume a lot of times.

Most of the other reviews here have touched up on the other technical issues.

Overall: Weighing out everything about this game, it's not worth the time or money. The only reason it's survival-horror is because of how incredibly bad this game is.
To satisfy your curiosity, I suggest RENTING this game!!! Then whichever you decide to do next is up to you. For me, I'm grateful that I didn't spend my hard-earned money on this.

I think this is the lowest rating I've ever given any game. No matter how many times I attempted to play this game, I ended up dying, stuck, or just plain frustrated and bored. The sad thing is, is that I can see how this could've been a good game.

For example, the player should have the opportunity to save whenever and where ever he or she feels compelled to do so. This way, dying wouldn't feel so emotionally painful. Also, being able to free roam without being attacked would have been nice and could've saved the game for me.

The best feature of this game is the "Chapter Selections" option. But, that's not saying much when all you do is either stand there like a jack a** out of confusion or die over and over again. Shucks. Like I mentioned above, you can't even free roam in peace.

For those of you who can handle it, AITD could possibly be a fun game to explore, but as for me, I don't have the patience to keep dying over and over again only to be resurrected to the same old senseless death or even worse, feeling a bit confused for not always knowing what to do next.

I have been a gamer for years... 36 years to be exact and this game was filled with innovative promise. I don't even know where to begin on how bad this game is. Woulda given it half to no star but that was not possible.

The concept is there... the gameplay, controls etc. is not. Even the storyline is a bit lack luster. I have worked for gaming companies and know what goes into making a single game... A LOT from start to finish.

Perhaps Atari needs to revamp their development teams or pack it up, go out of biz and take a vacation...

This is the worst game for the PS2 I have ever played and if it were possible to get my money back, I would. I might even ship it back to Atari.

Don't buy it.

A forever gamer, till the day I die.

Oh dear...this is the lowest score I have given to a PS2 game for a long time. Alone In The Dark on the PS2 fails really glaringly in many ways, and provides a thoroughly unsatisfying game experience.

The game is a kind of action/survival horror story, with you playing as Edward Carnby, trapped in a collapsing and monster-filled New York. Right from the start the controls will baffle you, and they conspire against you having any decent fun at every single opportunity.

Yes it's that bad. The game is almost unplayable due to the terrible, unresponsive and sometimes downright un-useable control system. Nothing works well. In several chapters, Carnby has to climb up and down ropes and swing about to reach ledges. The implementation of this makes it impossible to judge when to let go. Then there are the car driving sections...awful cars that don;'t even drive in a straight line even when you don't push the L-stick at all, and which spin off into instant death at the slightest clipping of any obstacle. Then there's the fighting...a gun that can only be fired in 1st person. Melee weapons that can only be swung in 3rd person. And both with a real time lag. Then there's the camera, constantly wobbling and bouncing around behind Carnby's head. You can't see the scenery or anything very clearly, let alone where you are running. Thank heavens the 3rd person viewpoint actually keeps still. Then there's the inventory...all in your pockets which you have to look in and pick things out of. Then there's the first aid packs and general healing. How does this work? I don't even know. And then there is...eyes-closed mode. Oh my god. Words fail me when trying to describe how terrible this is. You try keeping the R3 button held down without actually tipping it from side to side. And right at the end of the game theres a perilous twisting catwalk with instant death drops at each side to traverse, that you can only SEE in eyes-closed mode. I can guarantee you will be screaming. Screaming for your money back, probably. I'll say this though, the game designers have been fiendish in making you work out exactly what you have to do. There are no clues. Walk into a museum with a couple of monsters in it and there is no way out. Not a single clue. Walk into a factory where the floor is covered with deadly slime. "Use the spotlights" some helpful dame says. How? The panel has no instructions on it. And worst of all is the saving...save spots are at set points, and if you die somehow you often have to go back and do some tortuous skill-based action sequence over and over again, as many of the set-pieces are trial and error based. Hideous.

Now that just leaves the graphics, and these are no champions either. Characters are blocky and awkward. Carnby has this awful gaunt square-jawed hero face that looks really ugly. I have seen better graphics on PS2 games from five years ago! The collision detection is awful, and Carnby was forever teetering on invisible cliff edges or falling off when he should have been standing safely.

But I persevered and played it right to the end, bracing myself for a very uncomfortable finale...but let me tell you though, I was gobsmacked by the feeble winding up of the game. I actually thought I had got the "bad" ending and had missed out an entire final level. But no...a final nail in the coffin. Oh well at least I was happy that I could stop playing it.

Sorry folks, but this game is a stinker. Games are supposed to be about fuin, and with everything that's wrong here. Alone in the Dark is no fun at all.

LIKE I SAID, DONT BUY THIS GAME! IT TOTALLY SUCKS. I WAS ALL HYPED UP AND WAITING FOR THE RELEASE OF THIS GAME BUT I WAS TRULY DISSAPOINTED! THE CONTROLS ARE SO DIFFICULT TO GET USED TO AND THERE ARE SOME PARTS IN THE GAME WHERE IT GETS FRUSTRATING. I THOUGHT IT WAS GONNA HAVE CONTROLS LIKE THE ORIGINAL GAME RELEASED ON THE PLAYSTATION 1. THE CAMERA ANGLES ARE ALSO HORRIBLE. SO PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS GAME OR IF U WISH TO CHECK IT OUT, RENT IT AND SEE FOR YOURESELF. DONT THROW 40.00 DOWN THE DRAIN LIKE I DID AND I WISH I WOULD HAVE NEVER PURCHASED THIS CAUSE THERES NO REFUNDS FOR OPENED GAMES!

(Hey brothers... there's something new going down...)

(Classic)

(classic movie.....missing some major features?)

(How Applicable for Today!)

(Go Movie)
Are malevolent aliens working with CEOs, politicians, and law enforcement to establish the "new world order?" Could magic glasses enable humans to see these evil beings for what they really are? Would "Rowdy" Roddy Piper take matters into his own hands if these things were true? You betcha.

John Carpenter essential viewing. Fnord.

This is one of the raddest movies of all time. Few know of this movie, but it has a genius story line and even the main character ex-wrestler Rowdy Roddy Piper does a good job in my opinion!
This stone cold classic , which is scary in its predictions of our current society....is available in the UK ( I bought the import) with an 8 minute making of...which is cool but a commentary by Carpenter and Roddy Piper which is just wonderful. Why didn't Universal put it out over here with them?
If you like Sci-fi you should love its intelligence. If you love action flicks with a rugged star spouting cool lines and shooting up the scenery...its got that as well....

This movie rocks! Such a great Carpenter classic, Roddy Piper isn't that bad an actor too. It's amazing how this movie in a weird way echo's the current times and trends - hmm, interesting. Perhaps, it may be that this is not no science-fiction after all. If any of you out there area looking for a fun, cool movie this is it.
I love the movie I saw it on youtube and I bought the in amazon
They influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it. Horror master john carpenter directs this action-packed sci-fi thriller about one mans battle against aliens who are systematically gaining control of the earth. Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (mca) Release Date: 09/23/2003 Starring: Roddy Piper Meg Foster Run time: 98 minutes Rating: R Director: John Carpenter
An economic crisis brings unemployed Nada (Roddy Piper) to L.A. in search of work. What he finds instead is that the ruling elite of the world are aliens in disguise, their aim being to keep humans in a state of mindless consumerism. His discovery comes when he dons a pair of special sunglasses made by a resistance group and sees for the first time reality unadorned. Billboards, store signs, magazine covers--all bear subliminal messages to OBEY, to CONSUME, to have NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT. Money itself says THIS IS YOUR GOD. But worst of all, with these glasses you see which of us are really hideous, bug-eyed aliens. The conceptual breakthrough is hilarious while keeping its roots in darker matters. Although some fault the film for settling into its action plot, the ending has a great payoff. And the direction by John Carpenter is handled with superb workmanlike aplomb. One unforgettable set piece has Piper in a back-alley fistfight with a friend who won't put on the glasses that goes on and on, and just when you think it's over it goes another round. One of the most subversive films ever made in Hollywood,They Livewas released on the eve of the 1988 elections. The first TV ads had two hideous alien politicians debating, then one accusing the other of being "No John Kennedy!"--Jim Gay

(MIB Blu-ray)

(perfect everything)

(My Good, My Bad Of 'Men In Black')

(Great Movie)
It's Men In Black. What can be said. Great movie! Effects are fantastic in Blu-ray HD.
I don't know why I've been asked to write this review twice??! anyway, perfect item, perfect packaging, super fast delivery and I love the seller, ladyloromir. I would give 6 star if there's one.
Was happy with the price I paid for the product. Fast delivery. Came in excellent condition.
A good combination of comedy, drama and sci-fi with effective special effects made this movie very entertaining and thus, a big hit. It evened spawned a sequel that didn't do as well but I liked even better.

To me, Tommy Lee Jones was the best part of this film. I liked his straight-faced, no-nonsense approach to the job and his deadpan comedy lines. Then again, I prefer almost anyone to the smug, macho-obsessed Will Smith, who is just full of himself in almost every film he's in (although I've really enjoyed his last few in 2007-09).

At any rate, Smith and Jones play off each other well and Rip Torn, Linda Fiorentino and Vincent D'Onofrio are all entertaining in supporting roles.

Rick Baker's special-effects team did a creative job with these monsters. All of them are quite different in appearance and fun to view. Negatives include too much language for a kids-appealing film and the usual military/government cover-up conspiracies the Liberal filmmakers love so much. Have you seen a Hollywood filmmaker who likes the U.S. government? Well, they like the money they make here in America.

Tommie Lee Jones and Will Smith in the same movie, what more needs to be said!
Men in Black follows the exploits of agents Kay (Jones) and Jay (Smith) members of a top-secret organization established to monitor alien activity on Earth. The two MiB find themselves in the middleof the deadly plot by an intergalactic terrorist (Vincent D'Onofrio) who has arrived on Earth to assassinate two ambassadors from opposing galaxies.
This imaginative summer comedy from director Barry Sonnenfeld (Get Shorty) is a lot of fun, largely on the strength of Will Smith's engaging performance as the rookie partner of a secret agent (Tommy Lee Jones) assigned to keep tabs on Earth-dwelling extraterrestrials. There's lots of comedy to spare in this bright film, some of the funniest stuff found in the margins of the major action. (A scene with Smith's character being trounced in the distance by a huge alien while Jones questions a witness is a riot.) The inventiveness never lets up, and the cast--including Vincent D'Onofrio doing frighteningly convincing work as an alien occupying a decaying human--hold up their end splendidly.--Tom Keogh

(A clumsy warmup to "The Hills Have Eyes")

(GOOD ENOUGH TO PLEASE A EVIL AND SICK GORE HOUND LIKE MY SELF!)

(Last House On The Left, DVD)

(Hello, Wes!)

(A cautionary tale not told very well at all)
Let's face facts: When he made "The Last House on the Left," Wes Craven was an unskilled wannabe, and it shows. "Last House" is a clumsily made mess that does not deserve the absurd accolades that it has received over the years. For an example of skillfully made classic exploitation cinema, check out Craven's followup, "The Hills Have Eyes," which shows that he was capable of learning from his mistakes. And please don't pay attention to Craven or the dimwitted "film scholars" (Robin Wood, e.g.) who claim that "Last House" is a powerful statement about the Vietnam era (or somesuch nonsense), because it isn't: it's an inept attempt to create a "calling-card" trashfest, not a piece of profound social commentary. It doesn't work on either level.
This a bloody great horror classic! one of the best revenge flicks(just after i spit on your grave) and a great movie all round. get it if you enjoyed i spit on your grave. if you didnt enjoy i spit on your grave go guzzle some more seamen.
My friends and I saw this movie when we were 18, in 1973 and it scared us so badly, we never forgot it. We've talked about it over the years and decided to see if we could find it.... and of course we found it on Amazon. The acting isn't the best, but the tale is frightening.
I'll assume you already know the plot.

Call me a disturbed sicko, but I feel shortchanged. See, I came into Last House On The Left expecting a really cathartic exploitation film, one where the audience is made to despise a group of monstrous villains who are then made to suffer and die. Which, in a way, is what I got, but in a monumentally disappointing fashion. Look; what I'm trying to say is, the bad guys simply didn't suffer enough. After watching them kidnap, rape, torture, and slaughter two innocent young girls for a full hour, I was pretty hungry for some gruesome parental retribution. Instead, I got a hasty ten-minute climax that consisted mostly of a poorly choreographed fistfight that culminated in a turn of events that was at least 50% deus ex machina. Aside from one lousy genital mutilation, the rest of the villains got off pretty easy; being killed with a chainsaw is probably unpleasant, but it hardly seems like a fitting retribution for repeatedly stabbing and sexually violating a helpless teenaged girl (at least not in the moral universe of horror movies). And don't even get me started on the lucky bitch who got nothing more than her throat slit.

Look; I'm not a violent person. I don't want to so much as flick anybody in the ear. But is it so much to ask that, in a movie about violence being punished by violence, the bad guys are made to suffer to the extent that they caused others to suffer? If that had happened, then Last House would have delivered all of the emotional release and dark moral relativism that its premise suggested.

If the above two paragraphs haven't left you thoroughly disgusted, then I'd like to offer a few more comments about this movie:

1. The first hour was as gruesome, disturbing, and heartbreaking as I'd imagined/feared. As one of the victims, Sandra Cassell chilled me to the marrow.

2. The movie is an evocative slice of American life circa the death of the Hippy dream. There's a certain symbolic resonance to seeing two sexually liberated female members of the "love generation" being brought so gruesomely down to earth.

3. Speaking of strong females, it was great to see the mother (Cynthia Carr) being the more proactive and effective of the film's parental avengers. Her triumphant deception mutilation of the knife-wielding Fred "Weasel" Podowski is the movie's most glorious moment.

4. There's a very atmospheric folk-rock soundtrack. On the plus side, it bolsters the stuff I was talking about in point 2. On the other hand, it also clashes with the subject matter. But even then, there's something oddly disturbing about how even the film's soundtrack refuses to admit to the gruesome and tragic nature of the events at hand.

5. The "bumbling small town cop" based comic relief doesn't work at all, and it dampens the pace.

6. The parents don't seem particularly saddened by the loss of their daughter. They seem to take the discovery of her body as a cue to switch into bloodlust mode rather than the emotionally wracking tragedy that it really is.

7. The father's actions have an almost Home Alone sort of goofiness to them at first.

So... it's... good, I guess.

Art can be a cautionary tale that helps educate and prevent the violence that it depicts. This movie may have done so. I'm not a mind reader, so I'll never know for certain. I think that even those who like this movie understand appreciate this and don't actually like the violence that's in this movie but do consider it a necessary evil. They could be right. However, those individuals who actually do like the graphic rape scenes like the one featured here might be better off and to the betterment of all mankind perpetually locked up, perpetually medicated or put down like a rabid animal. In either event, I'd hardly hold this movie up to other examples of beloved classic hyper-violent cautionary tales such as The Godfather, Passion of the Christ, Saving Private Ryan, Schindler's List, or even Bambi when Bambi's mother getting shot. The distinction is that there's a reason those movies are classics despite their violence: They didn't drop the ball insofar as plot and character development are concerned. Also their creators clearly had a clue regarding the relationship between scene music and scene mood. Not so "The Last House on the Left." Even Craven himself confessed that he was stoned throughout the entire making of that movie. And frankly, as disjointed and incoherent as its plot is and music-scene relationship is, drug involvement seemed glaringly obvious even before someone confirmed my suspicion. Bottom line: It is possible to make a point yet not come across like a stoned giggling idiot. The concept that future pseudo-intellectual stoners who would be film majors don't "GET" is that their particular lifestyle demolishes any chance of their ever being taken seriously. Maybe if such individuals would actually make an attempt at some semblance of normalcy when singing the praises of their screen plays, or promoting industrial hemp for that matter, someone might actually make eye contact with them long enough to take either proposition seriously.
LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT COLLECTOR'S EDITION WS (DVD MOVIE)
FutureNightmarecreator andScreamweaver Wes Craven's film debut is a primitive little production that rises above its cut-rate production values and hazy, grainy patina via its grimly affecting portrait of human evil infiltrating a middle-class household. The story is adapted from Ingmar Bergman'sThe Virgin Spring, but the film has more in common with Sam Peckinpah'sStraw Dogsas it charts the descent of a harmless married couple into methodical killers. A quartet of criminals--a distorted version of the nuclear family--kidnaps a pair of teenage girls and proceeds to ravage, rape, torture, and finally brutally murder them in the woods, unwittingly within walking distance of their rural home. The killers take refuge in the girls' own home, but when the parents discover just who they are and what they've done, they plot violent retribution.

Along with George Romero'sNight of the Living Deadand Tobe Hooper'sTexas Chainsaw Massacre, Craven helped redefine American horror with this debut--all three movies portray modern society crumbling into madness and horror. But, unlike his fellow directors, Craven gives his film an uncomfortable verisimilitude, setting it squarely in the heartland of modern America. While at times it's awkward and inconsistent, with distracting comic interludes, his handling of the brutal horror scenes is unsettling, and the death of the daughter is an unexpectedly quiet and lyrical moment.--Sean Axmaker

(My favorite Koontz novel)

(New to Koontz)

(Not Koontz best. . .)

(Seized up in the Night)

(Seize The Nausea)
I've read almost all of the work of Dean Koontz (still tracking down some of his stories from the 70s which are now out of print) and this is by far my favorite. I can't even begin to tell what it's about because there's so much going on. For any other writer or any other book it would probably be too much. However Koontz blends together the different plot lines and makes them connect interestingly at the end. The best part of this book is the banter and dialogue between the characters. I did find Christopher Snow's monologue to be repetitive in places, mostly when he describes his life philosophy, but it wasn't so repetitive as to make the book lose its five star rating. In fact my favorite part of the book is his internal monologue about Winnie the Pooh vs T.S. Eliot.

As someone else stated, one great thing about this book is its ability to stand alone. I read Seize the Night before I read Fear Nothing and I had no trouble following the plot. The surfer lingo may not be authentic (I wouldn't know) but it's so much fun that I don't really mind. This is one book that I keep coming back to reread.

I think this one is a love it or hate it, like many Koontz books. I happened to love it. I have also listened to the audio book and I found the acting to be quite good.

I recently read Watchers, then followed up with Fear Nothing and Seize the Night. Wow! In Seize the Night, the character, Chris Snow, and his best 4-legged friend, Orson, are a delight to read about. The dialogue exchange between Snow and his surfing buddy is great fun. I hope there will be more adventures in Moonlight Bay. Sharky!
I want to start by saying that I am an avid Koontz fan. Until I read Seize the Night, I had not read anything from Dean that I did not enjoy. As an aspiring writer myself, I deeply admire his way with words and style and only hope that should I ever become published that I can be half as good as he is.

With that said, this book's pace was much slower than usual Koontz. I couldn't put my finger on why at first but then I realized there was more than the usual similies and metaphors and waaaay too much scenery description and internal monologue from the first person narrator (Christopher Snow). This really put a damper on things in terms of the pace. In my mind's eye, it felt like I was watching one of those old Godzilla movies where the character's mouths and facial expressions aren't matching the dubbed English words. Something would happen to Christopher or one of his friends (Orson, Bobby, Sasha, Roosevelt, or Mongojerrie)and we'd get a detailed, long-winded description of the surroundings or lots of similies and metaphors and then the emotional reaction that Christopher Snow experienced and the action he took as a result would be described.

The natural rhythm of this book was off. I think of a book as a sort of symphony and this musical score just did not come together like it should have because of the rhythm.

I will read more Koontz. This one bad experience has not put me off. Anyone is entitled to a bad day or bad call or BAD WRITING every now and then, even best selling authors. At the end of the day, they are, after all, human.

This is one of the worst books I have ever been forced to listen to. My wife and I listen to audiobooks during our hour commute every morning and evening. Unfortunately, my wife is a Dean Koontz fan. The characters are laughable, the plot ludicrous, and once again, Koontz demonstrates his literary diarrhea when using 500 words to describe something which could have been better portrayed with 20 words. Mack Bolan mercenary books or even Louis L'Amour westerns are better written than this trash. Having to listen to another Dean Koontz book may be grounds for divorce.
I can't say much that all of the other 1-star reviewers haven't already stated.

I'll just add one other thought. Since Dean Koontz is definitely not a surfer ... listening to his 1950's surf jargon and then having Koontz "translate it" to the reader/listener is LITERALLY nauseating.

He espouses terms like Kook and Gnarly and Sharkey and Hodad and Grom(met). Admittedly some of those terms are still in use today but almost all of them were generated in the 50's and should probably remain there.

As a real surfer, I found Koontz' constant use and subsequent explanation simply gag-inducing. Not to mention the friend Bobby's "accent". If you haven't listened to the audio book, trying speaking hoards of sixty-year-old stereotypical surf lingo cliches in your worst mellow but hoarse beach bum imitation (sounding an awful lot like a gay Clint Eastwood with esophageal cancer) into the mirror for a while. If you can make it past the ten-minute mark without spewing chunks into the sink or at the very least laughing uncontrollably at how much bile has risen into your throat, then I will retract this review.

Just don't say you haven't been forewarned.

Chris Snow, the light-phobic, oddball hero of Dean Koontz'sFear Nothing, is once again caught in the middle of something ugly. The children (and pets) of Moonlight Bay, California, are disappearing. The first to go is Jimmy Wing, the son of Snow's former girlfriend, Lilly. Then Snow's own hyper-intelligent dog goes missing. Snow decides that he will find them, but what he uncovers is more than just a simple kidnapping; before he can turn back, he's up against an age-old vendetta, an active time machine, and a genetic experiment gone awry.

Seize the Nightoffers up the same eclectic mix of characters that appeared inFear Nothing: boardhead Bobby, disc jockey Sasha, Snow, and all of their friends band together to find the missing kids and figure out why the people of Moonlight Bay are morphing into demonic versions of their former selves. They outsmart corrupt cops, outrun genetically enhanced monkeys, and outlive a time warp with a vengeance--all between nightfall and sunrise, the only time that Snow can be outside.

Though the premise is a little bit hard to believe, and the surf lingo occasionally irritating,Seize the Nightis ultimately fun to read. Koontz successfully draws you in and keeps you entertained through an unexpected climax and an enlightening resolution.--Mara Friedman
There are no rules in the dark, no place to feel safe, no escape from the shadows. But to save the day, you must...Seize the Night.

At no time does Moonlight Bay look more beautiful than at night. Yet it is precisely then that the secluded little town reveals its menace. Now children are disappearing. From their homes. From the streets. And there's nothing their families can do about it. Because in Moonlight Bay, the police work their hardest to conceal crimes and silence victims. No matter what happens in the night, their job is to ensure that nothing disturbs the peace and quiet of Moonlight Bay....

Christopher Snow isn't afraid of the dark. Forced to live in the shadows because of a rare genetic disorder, he knows the night world better than anyone. He believes the lost children are still alive and that their disappearance is connected to the town's most carefully kept, most ominous secret—a secret only he can uncover, a secret that will force him to confront an adversary at one with the most dangerous darkness of all. The darkness inside the human heart.

("For the dead travel fast")

(Terrifying Book)

(Bram Stoker's Dracula: A Parable For Our Times)

(Dracula rocks)

(Good Book, Atrocious Editor)
Surprisingly "Denn die Toten reiten schnell" or "For the dead travel fast" is more than an opening line to this tale of love in the dangerous moon light. After watching several Drac movies and a few Nosferatu's, I pretty much though I had a handle on the genera. Little did I know what a wonderful world of mystery and suspense that Bram Stoker opened up for me.

The story is told mostly third party though the papers, diaries, and phonograph recordings (on wax calendars) of those people involve in a tale so bizarre that it almost defies belief. The general story line is that of a Count that plans to move to a more urban setting (from Borgo Pass to London) where there is a richer diet. There he finds succulent women; something he can sing his teeth in to. Unfortunately, for him a gang of ruffians (including a real-estate agent, asylum director, Texas cowboy and an Old Dutch abnormal psychologist) is out to detour his nocturnal munching. They think they have Drac on the run but with a wing and a prayer, he is always one-step ahead.

Of more value to the reader is the rich prose chosen by Stoker as he describes the morals and technology of the time. We have to come to grips with or decide if we can perform the rituals that are required to eliminate vampires verses the impropriety of opening graves and staking loved ones. The powers in the book differ from the movie versions in that they are more of persuasion and capabilities to manipulate the local weather. At one point the Dutch Dr. Van Helsing, is so overwhelmed by a beautiful vampire lying in the grave that he almost forgets why he is there and may become vamp chow.

All in all the story is more in the cunning chase. And the question as to will they succeed or will Dracula triumph. Remember "For the dead travel fast."

Dracula

A while ago I began reading books that had been obscured by modern culture. There is much classical literature that is the source for movies and TV shows which have been so successful that the we forget that they originated from an equally or more successful book. The best example of this is Dickens, "A Christmas Carol" but Dracula is an easy second. There are so many adaptations of the Dracula that often we forget about what Bram Stoker wrote.

Let me start by saying that book is absolutely terrifying. Stoker uses bats, blood, gypsies, Transylvania, castles, lunacy, dirt, the moon, crypts, garlic, crosses, graveyards, wolves, mirrors, shovels and ship wrecks to create the spookiest book I'd ever read. There were times while reading the book (the part where Mr. Harker discovers Dracula's grave) where I actually bit my lip until it almost bled because of the intensity of the suspense. Yet the horror is one that is different from what I have experienced in modern movies or books. I am not sure if I can technically explain what the difference is but it is not a horror derived from blood, guts, gore or shock It seems the horror here is timeless. I remember talking to my mother about Psycho. She saw it as a child and it horrified her so much that she thought I would be traumatized by the movie. When I watched it years ago as a teenager I thought it was rather stupid and not scary at all. The same was for the Exorcist: I doubt it would scare a 5 year old the way it scared 35 year olds in 1974. Dracula however is a timeless horror that will be terrifying people for generations to come.

A few more points.

If you do read this book make sure you read a critical edition like this one. There are conversations that take place in English, Scottish and Irish dialects that cannot be understood without translation of a critical edition.

One thing that kept me from reading the book is that it is not constructed as a dialog like I am use to reading. Instead the story s pieced together from various diary entries, news paper articles, letters and journals. Do not let this format stop you from reading the book. Nothing in the progression of thought and action is lost in this presentation of the material.

Also, although somewhat anticlimactic, the chase scene at the end is the best, most intense and gripping I have ever read.

One word of advice for anybody who picks up this book - keep a lights on.

Book Groups of America, put down your Oprah choices, your Eat, Pray, and Love drivel, your watered elephants, and read Bram Stoker's Dracula. I wanted to read some long books before my book-a-day project begins and Dracula was on the list of recommended must-reads. My son's English teacher was right, everyone should read this book.

I finished Dracula last night after midnight. WIth a shiver I went off to bed and I dreamt of mist coming in under doors, bats beating against windows, garlic flowers and golden crucifixes. This novel is a really great read and ten million times better than any movie version ever made. The novel is deep and dense and scarily engaging, with compelling characters, great atmosphere, and a plot that teases thrillingly; Evil approaches, then withdraws, moves forward and is then pushed back again, if only until the sun sets and enabling darkness again descends.

The novel reads like the metaphor used often by its characters: a chess match. The match is between Evil (Count Dracula and his lovely undead) and Good (Mina and Jonathan Harker, Dr. Seward, Professor Van Helsing, Lord Godalming and the brave American, Quincey Morris); the pawns include the lunatic Renfield and the lovely and beloved virgin Lucy Westerna, as well as many other minor characters dragged nefariously into Dracula's plot to infiltrate London.

Clearly the novel is about temptations of the Devil being finally vanquished by the deep and intensely held faith of the righteous in their God: eternal life as offered by Count Dracula is spurned in favor of eternal paradise as offered by God.

But the novel is also an appropriate, and apropos, parable about greed. Count Dracula is not satisfied with living only one life; he wants to live the durations of a hundreds of lives. His greed grows and grows, and he feeds on the blood of the oppressed to further power his driving ambition. Greed begets greed and Evil begets evil. There is no end in sight until the forces of Good combine their faculties of intelligence, observation, and action to overcome the Evil and save the world from greed gone wild. As a political commentary, Dracula is frighteningly astute (and makes a sound argument for a much-needed third party in this country, the intelligent, observant reformer party).

Each character in the novel is well-defined and individually presented, each character grows and changes through the course of the novel; there is no stereotyping or predictability (even in Count Dracula). The heroine, Mina Parker, is viewed by the other characters through the lens of sexism but she is presented by Bram Stoker as intelligent, tenacious, and brave; she is never hysterically brave or mother-protecting-her-young brave, as so many movies and novels portray female bravery, but is wisely and timely brave.

The plot moves forward through letters, journal entries, and stenographic recordings, all from the point of view of the various forces of Good; our unease grows into fear as we catch clues that our braver heroes miss. I stayed up way too late to reassure myself that in the end the clues were caught, interpreted, and used to solve the mystery of where and how to catch the vampire villain. Count Dracula is finally brought down (I don't think I'm ruining it for anyone) through such diverse means as hypnotism, detailed knowledge of train schedules, buying of drinks for information (tipping for tippling), and of course, garlic, the sacred communial wafer, golden crucifixes, and the stake through the heart. There are also plenty of wolves, bats, mists, spiders, superstitious (quite rightly so) Roumanians, and long moon-lit nights.

Read this book. For more great book recommendations, visit readallday.org.

Bram Stocker is still a classic read. It was very scary from time to time.
I love Norton Critical Editions, but the footnotes in this volume are maddening. I'm puzzled that no one seems to have mentioned this. Example, a passage where Dracula appears in disguise and Bram Stoker obviously doesn't mean for the reader to have this bit of information yet. The footnote? "Here we see Dracula in disguise speaking wonderful German." I'm exaggerating, but you get the point. Another example: a passage describing Dracula's map of England (footnote: Here we see that Dracula has circled the city of X, where later in the story he will....and....and....until later....). Finally, there are even footnotes that engage the reader in conversation. Something like: "What do you think Dracula meant by that, curious comment, don't you think?" As with all Norton editions, there are some wonderful footnotes, commentary, etc. included, but still I would choose a different version.
Draculais one of the few horror books to be honored by inclusion in the Norton Critical Edition series. (The others areFrankenstein,The Turn of the Screw,Heart of Darkness,The Picture of Dorian Gray, andThe Metamorphosis.) This 100th-anniversary edition includes not only the complete authoritative text of the novel with illuminating footnotes, but also four contextual essays, five reviews from the time of publication, five articles on dramatic and film variations, and seven selections from literary and academic criticism. Nina Auerbach of the University of Pennsylvania (author ofOur Vampires, Ourselves) and horror scholar David J. Skal (author ofHollywood Gothic,The Monster Show, andScreams of Reason) are the editors of the volume. Especially fascinating are excerpts from materials that Bram Stoker consulted in his research for the book, and his working papers over the several years he was composing it. The selection of criticism includes essays on howDraculadeals with female sexuality, gender inversion, homoerotic elements, and Victorian fears of "reverse colonization" by politically turbulent Transylvania.
The aristocratic vampire that haunts the Transylvanian countryside has captivated readers' imaginations since it was first published in 1897. Hindle asserts that Dracula depicts an embattled man's struggle to recover his "deepest sense of himself as a man", making it the "ultimate terror myth".

(Had trouble finishing this book)

(Weakest of the series so far . . . .)

(Dead Boring)

(Best in the series so far)

(Vampires without the Urban)
I had real trouble finishing this book. It drags on in more than one place. The fights with the bad guys are drab and repeated. Chap seems to engage fights the same way each time, it becomes predictable.

I love the premise of this storyline, it is just taking forever to reveal new plot twists. We know Leesil comes from a bad background, and the authors just keep repeating the same things over in over in this book and also Thief of Lives. Never really revealing anything new, just repeating the same things.

Most readers seem to dislike Wynn, I really enjoy her though. The relationship with her and Chane is a nice refreshment from the relationship Leesil and Magiere have. It was good to finally have more about the mysterious Welstiel revealed as well.

This book was surely not my favorite in the series, I am about 4 chapters into Traitor to the Blood and I am hoping it begins to pick up. I had to force myself to finish Sister of the Dead, and if the next book is anything like this I am sad to say I may never come to find out how this series plays out.

I was disappointed in Sister of the Dead, although it was not devoid of some good writing and some good scenes.

Let's start with the down side. This novel lacks unity. It could almost be several novelettes linked together by a journey. There's no central development that provides a beginning and leads to an end. One problem may be that it is a "mid" book in a longer series. Whether the Hendees are writing a trilogy or a tetrology, this is one of those "in between" books that often prove the weakest in a series.

Few if any new characters are introduced. This is my fourth read in the Noble Dead series, and I would like something new once and a while, or even some development and change in the existing characters.

As another negative, I found a certain amount of entirely gratuitous gore that was troubling to me. Children, especially. The vampires not only kill children, but we are "treated" to detailed accounts of their throats being ripped out. In one instance, after a vampire has "drained" and killed a boy of about eight he throws the body some distance into the woods like a sack of trash. Pre-teen girls also prove to be "delectable" victims. I suppose if one is psychopathic, this is really great material. Chane, one of the "sympathetic" characters, who twice saves Wynn's life, nonetheless feeds on children, and we are given every detail.

A few scenes are rather preposterous. One aristocratic vampire carries a pack with chef's pans and gourmet utensils. He even carries a small tripod table. He drains the victim's blood in a pan, heats it, mixes it with some liquor, and then "sups" with a bib to protect his laced shirt. Great writing, or "nuts" -- ? This particular vampire only needs to have a long mustache to twirl -- he's a cardboard cut-out villain.

Now for the plus side. If one just treats the book as a series of novelettes, even so these stories can be very interesting and entertaining. The action scenes are great. The young woman Wynn again steals the show, seeming more real and interesting than the title character or her beau.

Once this "interim" novel is completed, it appears we are headed for a showdown in the Arctic that might be considerably more intense and interesting. I hope so.

Not all that bad, but structurally flawed. Almost as though the authors had to get some material out of the way before moving on to a stirring conclusion to the series.

After reading the first 2 novels in this series I guess I was expecting more. First of all, this is not a stand-alone book by any means. I didn't expect it to be, but if someone were to pick this up as a first introduction, I doubt they would waste their time on the far better- crafted others to date. I agree with some of the reviews mentioning the character development with Chap and insight into Magiere's past, but in general I felt like questions weren't really answered; they were just addressed and left hanging without any meaningful resolution. I don't typically skim through passages, but I found myself doing that frequently. I felt there were only a couple of really good action scenes.

Having said that, I am looking forward to the next installment and have already purchased it, in fact. I just hope there is more to sink my fangs into than there was in this one. Sorry, fans!

Sister of the Dead is a notable improvement over the preceding two books in the Noble Dead series. While the earlier books did a good job of establishing intriguing characters in Magiere and Leesil, they tended to be a bit repetitive and inconsistently paced.
Here, the character development that came before pays off. In Sister of the Dead we learn quite a bit about Magiere and the mysterious Welsteil, and yes, about Chap as well. Leesil plays an integral part in this book, but one senses that the next entry in the series will bring him to the fore.
A book about vampires should be at least a little bit scary. The earlier Noble Dead books were sporadically suspenseful, perhaps, but never gave me the creepy-crawlies. I was pleased that, at times, while reading Sister of the Dead, I found myself looking nervously into dark corners of the room, or wondering if I really wanted to turn out that light and go to sleep.
So: nicely scary, well paced, and just enough revelation about our characters to keep things interesting and prepare us for the next book. Well done!

For those looking for vampires without the urban twists and turns, here is the book for you. It is filled with lots of fantasy and is rated with authors like Jim Butcher and Naomi Novik. Great read, but definitely start with number one...Dhampir.
The Noble Dead saga continues as Magiere and Leesil, the slayers of the undead for DHAMPIR and THIEF OF LIVES, embark on a quest to uncover the secrets of their mysterious origins - and those responsible for orchestrating the events that brought them together....

Magiere is a dhampir - half human, half vampire - sired for the purpose of slaying the undead. Outside the village of Chemestúk, where she was born and raised, stands her father's keep. Within its walls, she hopes to discover the secrets of her past and figure out why a vampire would wish to breed a creature capable of slaughtering his own kind....

But there are those who don't want Magiere to learn the truth—and when her half-elf partner, Leesil, makes a startling discovery in the keep, he can understand why. Before Leesil can reveal the truth to Magiere, they must vanquish a creature of unimaginable and unlimited power who has damned a small village of people with a horrifying curse...
