customer 's review (One of the best 80s movies ever&an all time classic for any age!!!)
(WOW)
(DVD purchase)
(Footloose and Free!)
(Great flick, ok transfer) This movie is awesome... Coming from one of the best decades ever, having an incredible soundtrack, great acting, and a unique story line- this movie is one of the best ever&will continue to be watched by every age group for years to come.
The movie brings back so many memories for me... I still get just as excited watching it now, as I did back in the day!
Lori Singer and Kevin Bacon were perfect for the roles and what about Chris Penn's performance??? he did a superb job...
This movie never get's old and is just plain AWESOME!!!
I hope they put it on bluray disc...
Thanks for reading my review...
I saw this in the movies when it first came out, but I was amazed how many of the songs in the show are now 'standards'. We recently saw the road show in Ft. Lauderdale and it inspired us to buy the DVD. (The movie's better!!) product received was as advertised, and in great condition. Would buy from this vendor again. I cannot believe it has been 25 years ago that we watched this movie in the theatres! Wow! It caused an uproar then with our friends but today seems somewhat calm and shows that kids really need a little freedom of expression to do what comes naturally. Of course, all within reason and respect. Still a great movie to watch with your grandkids and talk about what things were like "back in the old days!" Footloose is a bit of a classic, and still fun to watch. Great 80's dance tunes that take me back to my high school years. It's great to see the film in its original aspect, but there are a few scenes/shots, especially towards the beginning, where there is some noticeable artifacting or lack of resolution in the video. Not terrible, but enough to warrant the four-star rating instead of five. Still a good buy. (This review pertains to the Special Collector's Edition DVD). Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) pulled a winning movie out of this almost self-consciously archetypal tale of teenage rock rebellion. Kevin Bacon stars as a hip city kid who ends up in a Bible-belt town after his parents divorce. An ill fit for a conservative community where rock is frowned upon and dancing is forbidden, Bacon's character rallies the kids and takes on the establishment. Between a good cast really embracing the drama of Dean Pitchford's screenplay, and Ross's imaginative, highly charged way of shooting the dance numbers, you can get lost in this all-ages confection, and you won't even mind Kenny Loggins's bubbly pop. Bonuses include one of John Lithgow's best performances (a bit reminiscent of Jimmy Stewart), and Christopher Penn (who sure doesn't look the same anymore) as a good-natured hick who learns to boogie.--Tom Keogh Rerations < Footloose [VHS] >

customer 's review (Edwin's gift)
(Edwin behind the music.)
(**Stories&More Stories From The Acoustic Highway**)
(Edwin McCain DVD)
(Big Dissappointment!!) I've been an Edwin McCain fan since day-one back about 14 years ago, I've seen him live 10 times and had the pleasure (and luck) of meeting him 5 out of those 10 times...there is nothing like seeing him live, but this DVD and his other "House of Blues" DVD are the next best things. His voice, his stories and his hysterical sense of humor are something I can never get enough of and his "Mile Marker" DVD show real moments of the true Edwin, although it doesn't contain nearly as much music as the other, its still without a doubt worth the purchase. Dedicated McCain fans know what I'm talking about...yeah you do.... When I purchased the DVD, I had no expectations. I was hoping for a live concert, but was pleasantly surprized to get a glimpse of Edwin behind his music. Not only is he a great songwriter/singer, he is a great human being. His music had already won me over, but his humor seal the deal. This DVD is a great addition to my growing collection of all things Edwin. First off let me start off by saying that I am a very big fan of Edwin McCain, his band, and his music. I bought this DVD thinking that there would be a good bit of live footage with him playing, but was only left with my pocket's empty, and my hopes shattered. Edwin McCains personality is portrayed here, as all other reviewers have said, but that really is all that this DVD does well. With only about 15 minutes of Live music I, as a viewer was left asking myself why Edwin and ATC Records decided to put this disc out. The only notable music on this DVD is "I'll Be". This is very easily Edwin's lowest quality item put out, lacking the passion, and originiality that so many of us know him by. A noteworthy Story, if not the only one is the story of how he wrote I'll Be, and the only reason that it is noteworthy, is not because it is a great story, but rather I'll Be is a great track. So if you have money to spare, and time to waste then you can buy this DVD, but unless Edwin releases a new DVD I suggest, that you stick to his CD's. I just loved this DVD. I really enjoyed the live performances and the behind the scenes stuff. I definitely agree with a lot of the reviewers out there, this DVD does tell you more about Edwin and does show his sense of humor. I really want to see him live sometime. The only disappointment I had is I wish there were more music videos on there, but all the other things that were on the DVD made up for that for the most part. Overall, an enjoyable DVD. As a fan of Edwin Mccain ,I was expecting lot from the first DVD. But it was a big dissappointment!!! There are only 3 or 4 songs in it. I think they went cheap this time... If you only buy this dvd for "I'll be" song, do it.. but you won't find anything extra. Rerations < Mile Marker: Songs&Stories from the Acoustic Highway >

customer 's review (Best ever on Vietnam)
(Simply Phenomenal)
("Stop (Vietnam) War, Make Friends, Do Business"---VC tourist)
(In the end They did get it wrong!!)
(The Best and the Brightest) I recommend this book to any of us who served in the lost cause in Vietman. Well written and informative. One of the best books I have ever read. A must reading for our Presidents and leader in the future. The Best and the Brightest has been the most illuminating and trenchant work I've found yet on American political and foreign policy during the 1950s and 1960s. For those people, like me, who were too young to have grown up during the period, it provides a thrilling narrative of the events and the people of that time. Although based on meticulous journalistic effort, the book reads more like a political thriller novel - with the catch that it is all true, that every twist and turn actually happened in our government. Most importantly, it shows clearly how the history of the 1940s and 1950s was so critical to decisions made in the 1960s; the accompanying implication that the history of the last 50 years matters enormously to our current policy-makers should not be lost on anyone. Read it for the wisdom that ultimately arises from failure, for the history of a great nation wrestling with its own hubris, and for the lessons it so clearly has for us in the present and in the future - read it. June, 1969, I arrive in Bangkok, Thailand for a 9 month TOD at Ramasun Station---a small, high tech ASA listening post.
Barhopping in Bangkok that night before I'm to be flown to my duty station in NE Thailand I come across some happy Orientals who invite me to their table.
Turns out the 'Happy Orientals' say they're NVA and VC and are taking a well deserved vacation from war.???
We talk and drink and have a good time.
One of the younger 'VC' says: "You good Joe. We friends in Bangkok. Why not be friends in Vietnam? Stop war. Do business. Have fun. Make love, not war."
"You not going to win in Vietnam. You take village, then you leave, we come back, you take village, you leave...Unless you stay in village, you going to lose. Why your leaders make you do this?" said another older 'VC'.
Since I had a 'TOP SECRET' clearance, I reported my conversations to my superiors before I was to leave for Ramasun.
'Ho hum' was the attitude of the debriefing officer. He wouldn't even let me write down my experience.???
Was this a test? Or was this so common that more data was just extra icing.
Anyway, after 9 months in Thailand, talking with locals, talking with fellow troopies who'd been in Vietnam, most of us came to the conclusion that we were losing tactically and strategically and the best thing to do was to let Vietnam be free before more US troops were killed in a Vietnamese War of Independence because the longer we were there, the bigger the bloodbath as the new nation would stabilize.
We Intel Grunts often wondered if the real 'hot poop' got to our leaders. Reading the Pentagon Papers and Best and Brightest tell me that they were getting the straight dope from the field; but, just couldn't believe it and progressed with the war as if the Vietnamese were Americans and that we were doing God's work to stop Godless Communism, etc...
I was disgusted then and got out of the Army in 1970. I am disgusted now that our Fearless Leaders like Bush and friends and our moronic tactics in Iraq.
The similarities to our Vietnam are eerie.
We can have victory over the Islamic fanatics that makes the US strong, uses fewer lives of our young, etc...but, our leaders aren't listening.
Good read. Just solidifies my longtime beliefs.
Bill Bryan I read this book way back in 1974 when an old Army buddy Lt. Tom Couch told me to read it. I am a Veteran of the War in Southeast Asia. I can attest to the happenings during my tour of South Vietnam. I quickly learned that the War as it was being played out during the years of 1971-1972 was a losing proposition. We were wasting all our assets for a Country who in truth wanted to be left alone. Halberstam has set in cement his views of a conflict that was invented in the minds of the powers to be in Washington. LBJ was the actual catalyst in the venture. In retrospect LBJ reminds me of a fellow Texan George Bush who reacts the same way 30 years later. Think about that, it is a true comparison. Although JFK had ventured into this Southeast Asian scenario, Halberstam feels that JFK would not have escalated this conflict. Maybe Yes, Maybe No!! The hubris of McGeorge Bundy and Robert McNamara would rush LBJ into the War to end Communism in Southeast Asia. This is what LBJ wanted to hear. Damn the torpedoes, full ahead!!!!!! In the meantime General Harkins was perpetuating a fraud on the U.S.A. in stating we controlled all the aspects of the Vietnam Conflict. He indeed did not tell the truth of the happenings in the fields of South Vietnam. We indeed were not winning. Later General Westmorland continued this masquerade. The U.S. sent over 500,000 troops into the quagmire of Vietnam. These governing Whiz Kids in Washington were indeed wrong. So now Old Friend, please learn from this ignorance. The beat goes on. Do we ever really learn. Halberstam understood way back in the 1960's, we also should learn that the best and the brightest really knew nothing!! They were wrong!!! This is a great read and I rate it 5 Stars. If I could I would rate it 6 Stars. Bloody Good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
An excellent review of the origins and causes of the Vietnam conflict and a must read for the serious historian to understand the liberal, leftist viewpoint. To be fair in one's analysis however, the author's views need to be contrasted to a viewpoint from the right. A good comparative work is Vietnam at War: The History 1946-1975 by Phillip Davidson. Some where in between the views of these authors probably lies the truth. David Halberstam’s masterpiece, the defining history of the making of the Vietnam tragedy, with a new Foreword by Senator John McCain.
Using portraits of America’s flawed policy makers and accounts of the forces that drove them,The Best and the Brightestreckons magnificently with the most important abiding question of our country’s recent history: Why did America become mired in Vietnam, and why did we lose? As the definitive single-volume answer to that question, this enthralling book has never been superseded. It is an American classic. Rerations < The Best and the Brightest >

(Written in a jargon-free, intimate, and conversational style)
(Simply Wonderful)
This is a surprisingly charming and thought-provoking book which avoids the typical "Simple Living" tips like decluttering your closet, and instead focuses mainly on how to simplify yourself from the inside out. That is, if we examine WHY we complicate our lives with so much STUFF and so many activities, we can more effective in getting rid of a lot of it.
There may not be any major new ideas of breakthroughs here, but McCain has a writing style that expresses her sincerity. She just seems like the kind of woman you'd want to call friend and nothing in the book comes across as exploitative or opportunitistic (how many "simple living" books have you read that seem merely to be written just to take advantage of the current interest in the subject?)
Anyway, I give it a big thumbs up for anyone (mostly women, though) wanting to have a more fulfilling and less stressful life. In The Lilypad List: Seven Steps To The Simple Life, author, psychologist, and personal development expert Marian Van Eyk McCain focuses on the inner aspects of simplifying our daily lives to reveal how our inner feelings about life will guide us to decisive and effective actions. Rather than listing general prescriptions, The Lilypad List offers readers a working self-help model to assist them in discovering their own unique paths to a simpler and more fulfilling life. Written in a jargon-free, intimate, and conversational style, The Lilypad List is one of the most accessible, applicable, and down-to-earth advice books available to non-specialist general readers with an interest in adapting their lifestyles to simpler rhythms, less intrusive demands, and more rewarding satisfactions.
The Lilypad List is a perfect read for anyone in transition or longing for a simpler life. The author invites readers to look inside, evaluate their unique circumstances and desires, and make lasting change. Marian VanEyk McCain leads by example and offers reflection and practical guidance, but don't expect a one-size-fits-all guide to simplicity. I'm often disturbed by books offering the "no more lattes, throw out half your stuff, all better" solution. As The Lilypad List points out, simplicity isn't that simple! But if you are considering real, conscious change from the inside out, read this book. It's like reading the travelog of an inner journey from a caring friend who has been there. In our fast, busy, crazy, stressed-out society, more and more people are becoming sickliterally and figurativelyof the rat race. People are searching for ways to simplify their lives. Since the 1990s, "downshifting" has become a major trend in both Europe and North America. The Lilypad List differs in two main ways from other books on simplifying life. First, it focuses on the inner aspects of simplifying life. Second, unlike most books on simplicity, a psychotherapist wrote this one. The Lilypad List, shows how our inner feelings about life and the deeper reasons and motivations behind the urge to simplifyonce we have examined them clearlywill guide us to the necessary, decisive actions. It goes right to essence of the principles behind these decisions and looks at how they can be applied in specific cases. Instead of listing general prescriptions, the author uses a self-help model to assist readers in discovering their own unique path to a simpler life. The Lilypad List is not aimed only at those who already plan to start new and simpler lives; it can also help those for whom the vision of a simple life is barely a conscious yearning. The author writes in an intimate, conversational style, free of jargon. She inspires and provokes thought, while offering practical down-to-earth advice. Rerations < The Lilypad List >
