(A shepard among sheep)

(Intriguing! Written from deep within the soul...)
Edwin McCain is the freshest sound in a long time. They have captured a sound like no one else's. And they aren't"too cool"to sing ballads. I very much enjoy listening to them and have made them one of the groups I would love to learn to play on my guitar.
I have just recently come to know Edwin McCain. I fell in love with his music the minute I heard his single"I'll Be"and he has fascinated me since. Everyone I know either has the CD or is ready to get it the minute they hear it. I played it for a friend of mine and by the end of the night he was ready to run out and by it! Edwin McCain reaches deep within and writes purely from the heart...he takes his own views and experiences and eloquently transforms them into a heart-felt song. He also is blessed with the good fortune of having a few fantastic musicians to accompany him. They really help bring out the emotion and have proven to have no limits! I am ready for more!
Edwin Mccain Releases his Third Album, 'messenger'. Features the Diane Warren Written 'i Could Not Ask for More'&an Acoustic Version of 'i'll Be'. Australian Exclusive Contains the Bonus Track 'alive'.

("Stand by Me"--a must-see!!!)

(Nostalgia, almost...)

(The BEST movie about the "growing up" years!)

(Great memories...)

(2.5 stars out of 4)
I ordered the DVD of the movie, "Stand By Me". I had seen this movie in the theater, back in the '80s, with my sister, Eva Cassidy---the wonderful singer who died in 1996 from cancer......
Eva and I LOVED this movie, and us watching it together in the theater is a wonderful memory I will have forever.......
This movie delves deeply into the hearts, minds, and souls of these youngsters. It is at times funny, and then heart-breaking, and most people who watch this movie will recall their own childhoods.
This movie is one you will want to watch again and again, which is why I bought the DVD in the first place!
This movie was directed by Rob Reiner, and was based on a story by Stephen King--need I say more?!!!
Buy this for yourself--you will not be disappointed!

I'm a baby-boomer that has seen and enjoyed this movie many times. I have read a number of reviews complaining about the profanity of the four boys. I lived for over 20 years across the street from a grade school and, believe me, boys that age (and even younger) DO enjoy tossing profanity around when teachers or adults aren't around, and many of them are quite adept at smoking cigarettes, too. (In this day and age, little girls are just as likely to do so.) Back in the 50's, though, I can't recall hearing boys or girls using the f-bomb as these kids did in the movie. That word didn't gain popularity until later...Just an observation.
"Stand By Me" is the BEST movie ever made about the "growing up" years, when one is about 13 years old. Think of it as sort of a "Wonder Years" of the big screen. All the young actors gave AMAZING performances, but I have to say that River Phoenix's is the standout.

It's a tragedy how the River Phoenix story ended. Such a TALENTED young actor. Who knows what movies he would be making today. Perhaps he would be as big a star as Johnny Depp is. I think he would.

Rob Reiner has directed FOUR films I consider to be CLASSICS. These are "This Is Spinal Tap", "When Harry Met Sally", "Misery" and of course, "Stand By Me". I must mention what I think are the two best scenes in this movie.

The first (and best) is the "pie story" Gordie tells by the campfire. CLASSIC! The second is the "train dodge" by Gordie and Vern on the trestle.

If you want to see a pre "24" Kiefer Sutherland, check him out here.

"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Does anyone?"

This is a classic and a must have to any DVD collection. Brings back memories of the good old days and youth. It is the adventure which molded their lives forever.
The Bottom Line:

A maudlin movie which coasts on a wave of pure nostalgia to its shattering anti-climax of a conclusion, Stand By Me is inexplicably beloved despite being a completely forgettable film: unless you happen to love the song Lollipop or want to see lots of boys crying and hugging, stay away.

A sleeper hit when released in 1986,Stand by Meis based on Stephen King's novella "The Body" (from the bookDifferent Seasons); but it's more about the joys and pains of boyhood friendship than a morbid fascination with corpses. It's about four boys ages 12 and 13 (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell) who take an overnight hike through the woods near their Oregon town to find the body of a boy who's been missing for days. Their journey includes a variety of scary adventures (including a ferocious junkyard dog, a swamp full of leeches, and a treacherous leap from a train trestle), but it's also a time for personal revelations, quiet interludes, and the raucous comradeship of best friends. Set in the 1950s, the movie indulges an overabundance of anachronistic profanity and a kind of idealistic, golden-toned nostalgia (it's told in flashback as a story written by Wheaton's character as an adult, played by Richard Dreyfuss). But it's delightfully entertaining from start to finish, thanks to the rapport among its young cast members and the timeless, universal themes of friendship, family, and the building of character and self-esteem. Kiefer Sutherland makes a memorable teenage villain, and look closely for John Cusack in a flashback scene as Wheaton's now-deceased and dearly missed brother. A genuine crowd-pleaser, this heartfelt movie led director Rob Reiner to even greater success with his next film,The Princess Bride.--Jeff Shannon

(Better than expected)

(Amazing, must see! Very chilling.)

(Incredible Supernatural Thriller)
Once you get past the low budget feel, the story itself is very interesting with some surprising twists. You have to try to look past some of the acting (which is actually kind of comical), although the main characters do a good job. The first 15-20 minutes I spent laughing at some of the acting and the "soap opera feel," but after that really got hooked to the story and had quite a twist of an ending! If you love supernatural movies, you gotta see it!
Amazing, a must see for fans of suspense and horror. Very Chilling. This one totally gets under your skin. I recommend it highly.
Death is the end. Period. Or is it? In this riveting supernatural thriller, one desperate woman will encounter ties that bind from beyond the grave. "I¹ll come back," vows terminally ill Michael Darrow (Tim Palcic) with his last breath. His widow Alice (Stephanie Colet) shrugs this off as the ravings of a sick man, but soon, she begins to suspect that her dead husband is trying to contact her. He swore they¹d to be together forever, no matter what. And when Alice falls in love with another man (Wendell Willat), Michael exacts a chilling revenge so he can keep his wife all to himself by any means necessary!

(Not as good as I hoped)

(Informative, but Depressing)
I bought this hoping to use it as a resource before our group goes to Pine Ridge next summer - but I'm not going to use it. It is too technical in some areas and not precise enough in others. The production value is not what I expected with such a name as Sam Donaldson attached. There are plenty of other resources, including Ken Burns' The West, and the HBO movie Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. I learned much more about the Dawes Act and other atrocities in that movie than this documentary. Also check out the movie Smoke Signals.
It's important that humankind never forget the tragedies of slavery, concentration camps, and New World genocide. However, that doesn't make them easy topics to digest. For example, I'd like to see Liam Neesom nude but not if that means watching the inhumanity displayed in "Schindler's List." The same catch-22 happens here. It's important for people in the new millennium to know that Native Americans have been and continue to be dispossessed. However, it won't make you day to see or hear 80 minutes of a discussion on the topic.

This documentary had diverse speakers: female and male, Native and non-Native. However, I don't think Sam Donaldson did a strong job in directing this work. One interviewee is a law professor, yet two of his front teeth look melted together and the large tooth had a big, nasty cavity on it. I'm sure a dentist could hook him up and that he can afford it.

I took a Federal Indian Law course and it was far from a piece of cake. This documentary focuses on the laws that ripped land away from Native Americans. Students in that course may benefit from seeing this. I'm not sure if this work would be too legalistic for others, but it does attempt at being user-friendly.

(remembering Tim Russert)

(Tim Russert remembered)
As the previous reviewer mentioned, I for the first time felt death of a public figure as a hearthelt personal loss. I watched this sepecial segment of the Charlie Rose Show on TV and decided to keep a copy. I thought I'd watch this DVD whenever I want to remind myself of the virtues of hard work, love, authenticity, and of how these things can make meaningful differences in our lives.
Timothy John Russert (May 7, 1950 - June 13, 2008).
This show is a tribute to the renowned broadcaster and journalist whose sudden death from a heart- attack shocked and saddened people all over America.
The show consists in an interview with Russert's close - friend the journalist Al Hunt, a number of excerpts from Russert's twelve appearances on the 'Charlie Rose ' show and a closing especially moving tribute by Charlie Rose for his colleague and good friend.
Russert was a much- loved figure not only because of his dedication and professional skill in hosting 'Meet the Press',but also because he was a warm, ethical, principled patriotic American. The work he was most proud of was the memoir he wrote about his father, Big Russ, whose values Russert learned from and lived by.
The conversations with Charlie Rose reveal Russert as a man of sense, decency good humor and good will. His love for politics and his love for his family were the center of his life.
This is a case where for many the loss of a public figure is felt as a personal loss.

An appreciation of Tim Russert with fellow journalist and friend Al Hunt. Russert died of an apparent heart attack while recording a voiceover for Meet the Press in Washington, D.C. on June 13, 2008. He had just returned from family vacation in Italy, which celebrated his son's graduation. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

(Prepare to be preached to)
The promo material of the Editorial Review puts forth an excellent premice. Jaded, unsympathetic cop is forced to 'see things from a different perspective after a brutal attack". The basic idea was good enough to make me buy the dvd. Too bad the movie did not follow through.
The opening was so stereotypical that my first thought was "Uh oh -another bad cop show". But it was more than that. It was a bad cop show with a message. And the viewer was bashed over the head with that message for the entire film. And just in case the lack of subtlety in the script or the over acting of the traumatized hero does not drive home that message, the scriptwriter summed it all up in two sentences at the end of the film. Which left this viewer rushing for the off button screaming "I got it already".
The premise was good - the movie was not.

Emmy Award winner Richard Crenna stars in this gripping thriller about jaded cop Richard Beck who is forced to see things from a new and frightening perspective when he is brutally attacked by two murderous criminals. Never having shown much sympathy for victims of violent crime Beck is forced through the degrading system he has always supported. And as he fights to regain his standing on the force and in the community Beck is determined to do only one thing - bring his attackers to justice. (The forgotten truth)

(Heroes All... Everyone! "Misty" Operation Commando Sabre)

(Great Book! ! !)

(Great read, very informative)

(What a book!)
You forgot to mention Maj. Gen. Don Sheppard as one of the authors, the one who lived this story. Very well written. The action, the emotions and all of the anger and of the incredulity of a war being run from warm, comfortable offices in Washington, is well described. Too bad it wasn't written sooner. This book, however, will not become "mainstream" because it's the truth that no one wants to believe.
Major General Don Shepperd (retired) and renowned journalist Rick Newman co-author a superb book about the Vietnam war: "Bury us upside down." Their efforts join other grand military historical authors such as Mark Berent (Rolling Thunder), John C. Wiren (Flight of the Erawan), Reginald Hathorn (Here there are Tigers) and teams like Garry Cooper&Robert Hillier (Sock it to'em Baby). This book is an incredible fast moving account of real aviator heroes who volunteered for a secret outfit of fast FACs (Forward Air Controllers) who's mission was to troll the Ho Chi Minh trail and destroy the re-arming supplies from North Vietnam.
Senator John McCain (in his foreword) said: "The Vietnam War, America's longest and arguably most painful war was a tragedy for two countries, theirs and ours." Yes, painful and costly!
General Shepperd and Rick Newman wrote a firsthand account that is accurate, interesting and instructive all at the same time. They tell us from different perspectives the stories about men who risked their lives everyday for their country. As you read you could actually feel the "G" forces and jinking of their "huns" (F-100 fighter jets). The reader could feel the "pucker factor" when they flew into the AAA (anti aircraft guns.)
This book is a true story about real American Aviators who volunteered for a clandestine operation called "Commando Sabre (Misty) and flew in low enough to encounter damage from a bullet from a handheld gun on the ground, directing Bombers and Attack aircraft in destroying the NVA and supplies going to the south on "Uncle Ho's Path" (Ho Chi Minh Trail).
I have read many other interesting and accurate accounts of the war, but not many grab one's attention and wring your heart out like this one does. All 457 pages urge the reader not to put it down. Most books slow down and get boring from time to time, but "Bury Us upside Down" never does.
I recommend this book for those who have been to war and those who haven't. Perhaps, those who haven't experienced war, especially the war in SEA (Southeast Asia), can see how politicians in Washington can hamstring our warriors and get them killed. This book is a fine example, showing why we haven't won a war since WWII. It surely isn't the brave heroes, that fought so valiantly, who lost the war.
There were so many side wars associated with the Vietnam war these guys had to be secretive and brave and deal with outlandish timeframes, in my opinion we all owe these brave "Zoomies" (Fighter Pilots) a debt we can never pay. Heroes all, every one! (In war, what is fair anyway?)
By the way, the Ho Chi Minh trail is in Laos and Cambodia. This book goes to show you what fantastic determination, skill and courage these "Super Pilots" had. Let us always remember the ones who didn't return, they gave their all. The ultimate sacrafice...
Great emotional gut wrenching book, ya gotta read it!

This is a very well written book and a great book for anyone that is interested in the true story inside the war. This book provide an insight to the lives of the people in the war and how it affected the families and loved ones at home.

I highly recommend this book!

I bought this for my fighter pilot husband. He has really enjoyed this entertaining book.
Oh man, what a book. I'll spare the big review, mainly because after reading what these guys went through, I don't think I could do it any justice, and it would be presumptuous of me anyway. These guys were real men, way beyond the definition of warriors.....and I'm sad to think that their breed has vanished with all of the PC in our society today. Read this, and get the TRUE picture of what it means to be a brave hero.
They had the most dangerous job n the Air Force. Now Bury Us Upside Down reveals the never-before-told story of the Vietnam War’s top-secret jet-fighter outfit–an all-volunteer unit composed of truly extraordinary men who flew missions from which heroes are made.

In today’s wars, computers, targeting pods, lasers, and precision-guided bombs help FAC (forward air controller) pilots identify and destroy targets from safe distances. But in the search for enemy traffic on the elusive Ho Chi Minh Trail, always risking enemy fire, capture, and death, pilots had to drop low enough to glimpse the telltale signs of movement such as suspicious dust on treetops or disappearing tire marks on a dirt road (indicating a hidden truck park). Written by an accomplished journalist and veteran, Bury Us Upside Down is the stunning story of these brave Americans, the men who flew in the covert Operation Commando Sabre–or“Misty”–the most innovative air operation of the war.

In missions that lasted for hours, the pilots of Misty flew zigzag patterns searching for enemy troops, vehicles, and weapons, without benefit of night-vision goggles, infrared devices, or other now common sensors. What they gained in exhilarating autonomy also cost them: of 157 pilots, 34 were shot down, 3 captured, and 7 killed. Here is a firsthand account of courage and technical mastery under fire. Here, too, is a tale of forbearance and loss, including the experience of the family of a missing Misty flier–Howard K. Williams–as they learn, after twenty-three years, that his remains have been found.

Now that bombs are smart and remote sensors are even smarter, the missions that the Mistys flew would now be considered no less than suicidal. Bury Us Upside Down reminds us that for some, such dangers simply came with the territory.

(BEST ROCK BOOK!!!)

(THE definitive primer on NY punk)

(the best book ever written about the beginnings of punk)
Simply put: a great book --and what a genius format. From Dee Dee Ramone to Johnny Thunders, you're are not gonna believe in the crazy tales this book tells and you're gonna be really willing to listen to many bands they talk about in here. Highly recommended.
Sometime in the late 1960's, a bad mojo was beginning to well up within the ranks of the flower power movement. There were quite a few disaffected outsiders that seemed to have figured out that the revolution was not destined to last, that it was in fact quickly becoming a sham. As corporate America began to swallow and repackage the 60's, some of the folks left behind by the peace and love generation began to vent their anger and shape a new vision. Proto-punk bands like the MC5 and The Stooges started to build upon the foundation that had been laid by the Velvet Underground. Their music was raw and violent in it's presentation, sonically threadbare and unpretentious. By the mid-1970's, a true scene began to happen in New York City that would serve to galvanize and give a true voice to this disaffected generation, a scene that would take it's cues directly from the violent and sleazy underground that it dwelled in.

Co-author Legs McNeil was a founding member of the seminal fanzine that helped give the nascent scene it's name and identity. "Punk" magazine was truly a groundbreaker, giving vital press to bands who would have otherwise gotten precious little exposure in the mainstream rock fanzines. Punk, of course, was much more than just a musical movement. In fact, the original punks were much more about living the lifestyle, living the nihilism that permeated their everyday lives. The music was just a conduit through which they expressed their dissatisfaction and aggression, it reflected what they were actually experiencing on the street.

"Please Kill Me" covers New York punk from it's birth in the mid-60's at Andy Warhol's Factory all the way to it's eventual death in the late-70's, as corporate America once again begins to catch the wave and numerous members of the original first wave of punk begin to burn out from the excessive and dangerous lifestyles that they embraced. McNeil and co-author Gillian McCain present their material in the form of interviews with a vast number of the people who were there on the front lines, experiencing and inventing the punk scene as it developed. Johnny Thunders, Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, The Ramones, Richard Hell, Danny Fields....they are all heard from here along with a host of groupies, drug dealers, hookers, agents and managers, club owners, and other scene hangers-on.

Overall, it's a great book, and the interview format really works well. The book is worth it's price just on the strength of the Iggy stories alone, but there's a ton of great source material here covering a lot of ground. it's a weighty tome at 500+ pages, but it reads fast and the stories never drag. I might have wished for a slightly larger photo section, but that's a minor gripe at best.

Readers must make note that this book covers primarily the development of 1970's-era New York punk, with a side detour to England to witness the birth of the Sex Pistols and British punk. (Though the Stooges and the MC5 are profiled extensively, giving voice to the seminal Detriot scene.)

Punk did indeed die at the end of the 70's, and it has of course been resurrected and reinvented by succeeding generations. But if you want to know where the whole thing began, you have to get this book.

HIGHLY recommended!

This is one of the best books I have ever read. If you have any interest in the mid to late 70's roots of punk rock, and just the beginning of a new kind of rock in general, pick up this book. And if you enjoy it, then pick up From the Velvets to the Voidoids, it makes a great companion to Please Kill Me.
What Britain refined, America defined. Assembled by two key figures at the heart of the movement and told through the voices o musicians, artists, iconoclastic reporters and entrepreneurial groupies, PLEASE KILL ME is the full decadent story of the American punk scene, through the early years of Andy Warhol's Factory to the New York underground of Max's Kansas City and later, its heyday at CBGB's, spiritual home to the Ramones, Talking Heads, Television and Blondie. PLEASE KILL ME goes backstage and behind apartment doors to chronicle the sex, drugs and power struggles that were the very fabric of the American punk community, to the time before piercing and tattoos became commonplace and when every concert, new band and fashion statement marked an absolute first. From Iggy Pop and Lou Reed to the Clash and the Sex Pistols (the first time around), Mc Neil and Mc Cain document a time of glorious self-destruction and perverse innocence - possibly the last time so many will so much fun in the pursuit of excess.
