customer 's review ("Stand by Me"--a must-see!!!)
(Nostalgia, almost...)
(The BEST movie about the "growing up" years!)
(Great memories...)
(2.5 stars out of 4) I ordered the DVD of the movie, "Stand By Me". I had seen this movie in the theater, back in the '80s, with my sister, Eva Cassidy---the wonderful singer who died in 1996 from cancer...... Eva and I LOVED this movie, and us watching it together in the theater is a wonderful memory I will have forever....... This movie delves deeply into the hearts, minds, and souls of these youngsters. It is at times funny, and then heart-breaking, and most people who watch this movie will recall their own childhoods. This movie is one you will want to watch again and again, which is why I bought the DVD in the first place! This movie was directed by Rob Reiner, and was based on a story by Stephen King--need I say more?!!! Buy this for yourself--you will not be disappointed! I'm a baby-boomer that has seen and enjoyed this movie many times. I have read a number of reviews complaining about the profanity of the four boys. I lived for over 20 years across the street from a grade school and, believe me, boys that age (and even younger) DO enjoy tossing profanity around when teachers or adults aren't around, and many of them are quite adept at smoking cigarettes, too. (In this day and age, little girls are just as likely to do so.) Back in the 50's, though, I can't recall hearing boys or girls using the f-bomb as these kids did in the movie. That word didn't gain popularity until later...Just an observation. "Stand By Me" is the BEST movie ever made about the "growing up" years, when one is about 13 years old. Think of it as sort of a "Wonder Years" of the big screen. All the young actors gave AMAZING performances, but I have to say that River Phoenix's is the standout.
It's a tragedy how the River Phoenix story ended. Such a TALENTED young actor. Who knows what movies he would be making today. Perhaps he would be as big a star as Johnny Depp is. I think he would.
Rob Reiner has directed FOUR films I consider to be CLASSICS. These are "This Is Spinal Tap", "When Harry Met Sally", "Misery" and of course, "Stand By Me". I must mention what I think are the two best scenes in this movie.
The first (and best) is the "pie story" Gordie tells by the campfire. CLASSIC! The second is the "train dodge" by Gordie and Vern on the trestle.
If you want to see a pre "24" Kiefer Sutherland, check him out here.
"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Does anyone?" This is a classic and a must have to any DVD collection. Brings back memories of the good old days and youth. It is the adventure which molded their lives forever. The Bottom Line:
A maudlin movie which coasts on a wave of pure nostalgia to its shattering anti-climax of a conclusion, Stand By Me is inexplicably beloved despite being a completely forgettable film: unless you happen to love the song Lollipop or want to see lots of boys crying and hugging, stay away. A sleeper hit when released in 1986,Stand by Meis based on Stephen King's novella "The Body" (from the bookDifferent Seasons); but it's more about the joys and pains of boyhood friendship than a morbid fascination with corpses. It's about four boys ages 12 and 13 (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell) who take an overnight hike through the woods near their Oregon town to find the body of a boy who's been missing for days. Their journey includes a variety of scary adventures (including a ferocious junkyard dog, a swamp full of leeches, and a treacherous leap from a train trestle), but it's also a time for personal revelations, quiet interludes, and the raucous comradeship of best friends. Set in the 1950s, the movie indulges an overabundance of anachronistic profanity and a kind of idealistic, golden-toned nostalgia (it's told in flashback as a story written by Wheaton's character as an adult, played by Richard Dreyfuss). But it's delightfully entertaining from start to finish, thanks to the rapport among its young cast members and the timeless, universal themes of friendship, family, and the building of character and self-esteem. Kiefer Sutherland makes a memorable teenage villain, and look closely for John Cusack in a flashback scene as Wheaton's now-deceased and dearly missed brother. A genuine crowd-pleaser, this heartfelt movie led director Rob Reiner to even greater success with his next film,The Princess Bride.--Jeff Shannon Rerations < Stand by Me [VHS] >

(bio dome review) I enjoyed Pauly Shore in Son-in-Law, but I didn't enjoy him as much in this film. Lord help me, but I thought this movie was pretty hysterical in it's stupidity. Joey Adams was as always, great. Who can resist a Baldwin in rasta rolls? Not me. Definately get this for parties. Parties where everyone is drinking too much and wanting some stupid fun. Oh, Bonus: Kylie Minogue. Come on...you can't pass that up! I'm not a big fan of Pauly Shore but I loved this movie. It is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. There are countless ridiculous scenes that you'd have to be retarded not to laugh at, like when the scientist tells Bud and Doyle not to do anything they would do at home (and then they have the flashback about shaving the dog).
Besides being funny, the movie has really hot girls. The two main characters have really good looking girlfriends (dressed extremely trashy of course) and they meet two unbelievably hot girl scientists at the Bio-Dome (one is Australian singer Kylie Minogue)
This is definitely a movie you either hate or love. If you're into serious movies or dramas I definitely would not recommend this. GOT THE ITEM EARLIER THEN EXPECTED. I GET THIS FOR MY NEPHEW. HE HASN'T COMPLAINED YET! The movie, Bio Dome, is a must see. Pauly Shore and Steven Baldwin are the main actors. They play as two frat boys who get trapped in a biological bubble with 5 scientists. It is rated pg13. The movie was released in 1996. Rerations < Bio-Dome [VHS] >

(Makes you think)
(Not clear)
(The human story underneath)
("We don't burn books in this country.") This is a sad and poignant video. I remember buying the first edition of the book released by Soft Skull Press, and I was amazed but not surprised by the revelation that Bush was busted for coke.
J.H. Hatfield was obviously a troubled person, and the whole story is tragic. This is what happens to those who reveal the truth about powerful people. It really makes you wonder. I tried to read "Fortunate Son" by James Hatfield but didn't have the patience at the time to read the book. I heard plenty about it and felt I got the gist of the book. I decided I could spend 79 minutes of my time watching the DVD. The owner of Soft Skull, the publishing company who re-released the book after St. Martin dropped and recalled the book. St. Martin even burned the books they had (disgusting!)after being threated by Bush campaign legal staff. Anyway, what bothers me is that our media, even book publishers, are afraid to say anything negative about Bush. I thought that was changing after Katrina but not much. Mainstream media goes easy on the Bush Administration but not surprising since Corporate America owns everything. And the writer, James Hatfield committed suicide. He was no angel himself but that struck me as sad. He had a little girl who he genuinely seem to adore.
First, as anyone who knows me will testify, I'm NOT a Dubya fan. On the contrary, I've been working on his impeachment, have written to Congress many times on the subject.
Second, I did purchase the book, "Fortunate Son" a couple of years ago. It's among the several anti-Bush books I have.
But this documentary had me wondering: Did the book's author make up scuttlebutt about Dubya?
I think Bush is a spoiled brat who's literally gotten away with murder his whole life. But my belief doesn't make the claim true. I hoped that Hatfield, the book's author, would have solid evidence that Bush had indulged in cocaine--or any other practice to show that Bush is the collossal hypocrite I believe he is. Unfortunately, even the film suggested that those whom Hatfield "quoted" denied having said what Hatfield attributed to them.
So, did Hatfield make up the story? Did he just spread gossip? I'd love to find Bush guilty of everything of which I believe he's guilty. But, as I worked in civil rights law for a number of years, I became wary of speculation, gossip, people FEELING something was, say, racist when such a feeling did not a racist motive make.
Really, I hoped to find a useful documentary here--and I have a good sized collection of documentary DVDs--but I didn't. May Mister Hatfield rest in peace (He committed suicide, and that was emotionally hard on those at Soft Skull Press who's defended him--needless to say). But the best I can say about this documentary is that it served to challenge the credibility of a Bush critic. And that may have done far more harm than good. This documentary actually turns out to be quite a lot more than a political polemic, and it's all the better for it. Naturally, extreme lovers of Bush will be put off immediately, but no surprise there. And, people looking for straight Bush bashing may be disappointed as well. This is not an expose into the darker side of the Retard King, and it purposely goes easy on the conspiratorial tone. There is a significant, though not entirely fleshed out, subtext about media control and the consequences of that, but mostly this is a story about some fascinating, driven, rather demented people and their travails amongst the big fish. In other words, it's most entertaining and enlightening on a human level, not a political one.
I will say that the `revelation' at the end is so extreme that it changes the perception of the entire narrative, and it's something which the movie itself never entirely comes to grips with. The way it's structured does give the momentum of the drama a naturalistic feel, but I wonder if there wasn't a better, more upfront way to rework it and maintain the impact.
However, the sense of howling into the wind is subtle and well played, and the real human drama of people striving to be more than they actually are (even by duplicitous means) opens up a whole range of connections between GWB, the author and the publisher. The idea that the publisher and the author are to some extent frauds, or at the very least unabashed showmen, would call into question the validity of the whole documentary if the approach didn't feel genuinely vérité, which is why it works much better as a depiction of flawed humanity than as an investigation into the (also interesting) issues with the book, media, etc. "Horns and Halos" is a fascinating story behind a book that became so controversial, its publisher, St Martin's Press issued a recall a few days after the publication date, and promptly burned all of the copies. The name of the book is "Fortunate Son" a biography of George W. Bush. The book's author, J.H.Hatfield had a few other star biographies under his belt (Ewan McGregor and Patrick Stewart) and also authored an unauthorized guide of X-Files when he pitched the book successfully to St. Martin's Press. "Fortunate Son" was supposed to be one of those glitzy tribute bios, but it turned into something much more, and what happened to the book, and J.H.Hatfield is the meat of this riveting documentary.
Hatfield added an afterword to the book, which he claimed was at St. Martin's insistence. The afterword included a juicy acknowledgment by three unspecified sources about Bush's alleged cocaine addiction. Hatfield insisted that he didn't want to add this info, but did so when the publisher pressed the issue. Immediately after publication, Hatfield's sordid past--which included a murder-for-hire scheme came to light, and the dirt on Hatfield--combined with the segment on Bush's alleged cocaine use led to the books' recall and destruction.
Enter Soft Skull Press, a tiny independent press who then republished the book and tried to distribute it. A great deal of the film follows the trials and tribulations of the rogue founder of Soft Skull Press, the intrepid, idealistic Sander Hicks as he and J.H.Hatfield attempt to re-launch the book. Hicks and Hatfield attended book conventions, and even appeared on 60 Minutes to try and promote the book. The two men form an unlikely sometimes-difficult bond. There's Hatfield with his glum, fatalistic realisation that he's "dead meat", and then there's Hicks, who refuses to give up. Unfortunately, the content of the book faded behind its controversy and the author's past. And even when Hatfield revealed his sources, nothing could salvage the situation.
The film "Horns and Halos" is a two-disc set. One disc is the film, and the other disc is devoted to extras including: protests at Bush's inauguration, band White Collar Crime in performance, 11 deleted scenes, director's commentary, interviews with Hatfield, protest coverage, KCET coverage of the documentary, and an interview with Sander Hicks. If you are interested in reading more of the story (the 60 minutes transcript, for example), Sander Hicks has a website (sanderhicks.com). Hicks no longer works for Soft Skull Press and is now--amongst other things--working on a bio of Karl Rove--displacedhuman Horns and Halosis a fascinating, unexpectedly tragic story about one man's downfall in the brutal world of perception-driven media and politics. In the late 1990s, author James Hatfield wroteFortunate Son, a biography of then-candidate George W. Bush that alleged, among other things, that the future president used cocaine during the '70s. St. Martin's Press fast-tracked the project, but recalled the book when Hatfield's earlier prison time for murder conspiracy became known.Horns and Halosfollows what happened next:Fortunate Sonwas picked up by tiny Soft Skull Press, run by a passionate, Mohawk-topped young man named Sander Hicks, but the long, uphill battle to restore credibility to the work proves ruinous. The film is notable for access to the anxiety and roller-coaster emotions of Hatfield and Hicks, and there's plenty more despair in deleted scenes offered on this two-DVD set. Special features are especially important and useful here for added context, including raw footage of protests at Bush's inauguration, performances by Hicks and his band White Collar Crime, a profile of the film created by public television's KCET, and much else.--Tom Keogh Studio: Wea-des Moines Video Release Date: 10/05/2004 Run time: 79 minutes Rating: Nr Rerations < Horns and Halos >

customer 's review (The Bad Son)
(interesting contemporary romance) THE BAD SON by Linda Warren October 28, 2006
Amazon rating 3.5/5
"In the latest in a series featuring the McCain brothers, The Bad Son is Beau McCain, a successful lawyer with a good heart. Growing up, his father used to call him a bad son, for taking his mother's side in a nasty divorce, while another brother chose to live with their father.
All his life Beau has liked Macy Randall - as they grew older like turned into love. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to reciprocate. Beau hasn't had any success with long-term relationships - he can't get Macy out of his mind. Macy has a secret about her short-lived marriage but hasn't told anyone, including her best friend Beau. This secret has prevented her from forming close relationships. While she loves Beau and considers him her best friend, she refuses to get any closer to him. She's afraid that her secret will cause him unhappiness and that she will ultimately lose him." - complete review at BookLoons - M. Lofton
I enjoyed the plot line that was the center of THE BAD SON but I had a problem with some of the dialog, which often felt stilted to me. The end of the story also seemed a bit too much drama for me, but otherwise the book was enjoyable, including the sub plot that centered on Beau's mother. Waco family lawyer Beau McCain loves Macy Randall, but he has little hope of gaining her trust as she was burned badly in her first marriage. Adding to his unhappiness is that he believes she sees him as her big brother, someone's strong shoulder available when she needs one.
When her troubled pregnant sister Delia comes home to give birth, Macy turns to Beau for strength as she knows that her sibling is incapable of nurturing a child. However, when her sibling abandons her newborn Zoe, Macy needs Beau even more so. He finally tells her he loves her and she says she cares too much to tie him down with a woman who cannot bear children. However, Beau has a new incentive to persuade his beloved that they can raise a loving family together staring with the baby left behind.
THE BAD SON is an interesting contemporary romance starring two likable lead characters who readers know early on love one another, but seem doomed to never forging a relationship beyond friendship though the baby obviously serves as a matchmaker. In some ways Delia is the more fascinating character as the audience observes her destructive behavior and even after she leaves begins to learn about her legal issues on top of her behavioral problems. The fourth McCain brother tale is an interesting family drama.

customer 's review (You'd be a fool not to read this)
(Enjoyable puzzler)
(SAM McCAIN STRIKES AGAIN !!!) OK, maybe it's because I was a teenager during the late 50s, early 60s that I like the Sam McCain series so much, because each McCain novel is such a peachy trip down memory lane. But, really, it is a lot more than that: McCain is an excellent writer, a wordsmith, even. His writing is sparse, sensitive and muscular, with the occasional nail-on-the-head metaphor. The small-town characters are all quite colorful, but very believable. Most important of all, he establishes plausible crimes that have various suspects, with twists and surprises in the denouement. For instance, in this one, who would have ever thought that the murderer was...? Just go read the book and have a great time! Not a lot of "edge" to the main character, but there are some nicely subversive plot elements, a well-done romantic subplot, and an interesting early 1960's setting. Not a bad little mystery thriller. Another great Sam McCain mystery !!! If you liked the others, you will LOVE this one. GREAT READ !! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Its Christmastime 1960 in Black River Falls, Iowa, but with an Indian summer keeping the temperature at 75 degrees, it sure doesnt feel like winter. Its so warm, in fact, that the Lucky Star Drive-In is still open, and Rick Conroy is still drag-racing the nights away with his friends on a deadly stretch of highway outside of town. When Rick slams fatally into a bridge at 90 miles an hour, holiday cheer veers toward foul play, for the police find his brake line to be as lacerated as his spine. The solution does not come easily for struggling lawyer and sometime-investigator Sam McCain, who is dragged into the case by the incorrigible Judge Esme Anne Whitney. Leads go nowhere, tensions mount. Add to that his personal problemshis father has lung cancer and a recent one-night stand is pointing to scandaland its no wonder the holiday heat wave is making this McCain Christmas the darkest, and most dangerous, of the decade. (Out of print but worth looking for.) One thing I always have a problem with when reviewing books is that I don't want to spoil it for you, the reader. I want to recommend the book, but it's difficult to tell you *why* I recommend it.
With "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane", I can only say that it's a great novel of suspense, mystery, adolescent love, intelligence, and even a little horror. It's one of my favorite novels because it paints a picture that I find enchanting; An adolescent girl in the 1970s who lives by her own rules, and is smart enough to fend for herself. She's a kindred spirit, Rynn is. I admire her, and yet I pity her predicament. I can relate, in a strange way, to what she goes through. I can *feel* her loneliness, and yet I can also see her determination and drive to be alone if that's what it takes to survive.
I also remember feeling love as strongly as she does, and envy that first love feeling she feels that is so well-described in this book.
The movie that was inspired by this book is also one of my favorites, but it changes many things- Most notably, it makes Rynn a lot less British, and a lot more innocent than she is in the novel.
You can't go wrong with this book, especially at the used price. I urge all readers to give it a go. I read this book after having seen the movie and I loved it! The only drawback is that, after reading it, you wonder what happens to Rynn later! Read it! I saw the movie when I was 15 on some cable channel back in the 90s and saw who I wanted to be in the character of Rynn (the "rhynn" in my email addy is in honor of her). Because of the movie, I found the book and also discovered Emily Dickinson. The movie, one of my favorites, is outdone by the book (which I've read several times).
The book and movie were originally done in the 70s, but I think this is not a problem at all. I still loved it. This should also appeal to the "ghosts" (people who try to stay invisible to society) and "moles" (fake being part of it) of any age and gender out there, who refuse to let their spirits be broken and owned by the impersonal and unedifying forces of the vapid masses and malicious control freaks that haunt our world. This is also a book where the heroine (and later accomplice) overcome adversity by cleverness (and admittedly some ruthlessness, but their enemies are just as ruthless) rather than by dramatic fights, which is refreshing in and of itself, IMO. It combines mystery and suspense and romance, spiced with many creepy secrets.
I recently had a dream where I saw a modern remake of the movie and nearly woke up in my excitement. I've since started rereading the book and I still love it. This is one of my all-time favorites, and I read it again every October. I first read "The Little Girl Who Lived Down the Lane" as a junior in high school. And I recently had the distinct pleasure of tracking down a used version.
Nearly fifteen years later, this book still effectively delivers.
Koenig has crafted a rarity. It is a tense, suspenseful narrative that never relies on theatrics or histrionics to raise the reader's unease. The book is short - one suspects that it can be read in a sitting - but the book leaves a lasting impact once finished.
The narrative shifts between several characters. But the main - and memorable - protagonist is Rynn. Rynn is a young woman who a reader is unsure to be rooting for or apprehensive of.
Throughout the book, she displays extraordinary resource and tightly wound emotions - but her voice and feelings are telegraphed in away that seems thoroughly convincing and realistic. And although Rynn is the main character to which all other others rotate around, the reader is put into the perspective of the satellite characters.
To summarize the novel, unfortunately, would be to give away the ending. The theme and questions, however, are simple. Young Rynn is harboring a secret in the house she and her father have rented in a quiet New England hamlet.
What is the secret? And why is Rynn so determined to protect this secret it all costs?
Internal narrative is Koenig's strong suit. Emotions, particularly Rynn's, seem genuine and realistically developed. Not once are there illogical jumps in character or story development.
The one caveat is that book takes place in the mid-1970s - so many situations have to be read with a grain of salt because they would never be allowed to occur in the present day.
If you are searching for a page-turner of a suspenseful nature - this book is highly recommended. I was so excited to get a copy of this out-of-print book after having not read it since I was about twelve. (I'm a real grown up now.) This is an excellent teen novel, but I would recommend it to anyone who loves reading--it really is very good. Not perfect--it does fall apart a little at the end, but the ending works, only it really left me wanting more. Although it is actually a "teen" novel, some of the subject matter is pretty mature and the relationships are satisfyingly complicated. Aside from the horrible Hallets, who are very well-drawn villains, the budding love affair between Rynn and Mario is very sweet and actually quite touching. I think the book is miles better than the movie starring Jodie Foster, although I remember liking the movie the last time I saw it (more than 20 years ago)!
