(So Idiotic. So Fun.)
(Shave Poochy Poochy)
(CUSTOMER SERVICE)
(bio dome review) I enjoyed Pauly Shore in Son-in-Law, but I didn't enjoy him as much in this film. Lord help me, but I thought this movie was pretty hysterical in it's stupidity. Joey Adams was as always, great. Who can resist a Baldwin in rasta rolls? Not me. Definately get this for parties. Parties where everyone is drinking too much and wanting some stupid fun. Oh, Bonus: Kylie Minogue. Come on...you can't pass that up! I'm not a big fan of Pauly Shore but I loved this movie. It is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. There are countless ridiculous scenes that you'd have to be retarded not to laugh at, like when the scientist tells Bud and Doyle not to do anything they would do at home (and then they have the flashback about shaving the dog).
Besides being funny, the movie has really hot girls. The two main characters have really good looking girlfriends (dressed extremely trashy of course) and they meet two unbelievably hot girl scientists at the Bio-Dome (one is Australian singer Kylie Minogue)
This is definitely a movie you either hate or love. If you're into serious movies or dramas I definitely would not recommend this. GOT THE ITEM EARLIER THEN EXPECTED. I GET THIS FOR MY NEPHEW. HE HASN'T COMPLAINED YET! The movie, Bio Dome, is a must see. Pauly Shore and Steven Baldwin are the main actors. They play as two frat boys who get trapped in a biological bubble with 5 scientists. It is rated pg13. The movie was released in 1996. They're weird, they're wild and they're going totally environmental! Two deadbeat dudes are about to trade beer and pizza for soymilk and tofu in this outrageously funny comedy from the producers of Dumb and Dumber. Before Earth Day 1996, the closest Bud (Pauly Shore) and Doyle (Stephen Baldwin) had ever come to a garbage dump was the floor of their apartment! So when their ecology-conscious girlfriends ask them to stop wasting time and start cleaning waste, the dimwitted duo makes it clear that they'd rather talk trash than pick it up. But their world suddenly changes when they're accidentally trapped inside Bio-Dome a year long scientific ecological experiment with no fast food or cable television! Will Bud and Doyle adapt to their new found habitat or will their very presence spell extinction for themselves, the project and perhaps the entire planet?! Rerations < Bio-Dome [VHS] >

(the best version of a movie from a book)
(80's Movies Fan)
(Well made and sincere coming of age movie)
(living in bixby, ok.) This film is really kind of dumb. It shows a red neck kid in Oklahoma growing up. He seems to have more courage than sense. His is a very disfunctional life and he doesn't seem to have anything but one emotional problem after the other. I pretty much disliked the film, but for Disney it must have been an adventure in semi-realism? this movie has to be the best version of a book turned into a movie. everything that happened in the book, happened in this movie. five stars! i loved the book and i love this movie! TEX was a great Movie,I own THE DVD..A must See IF You're Matt Dillon's Fan :)
Tex is a 15 year old Oklahoma farm boy with more than his fair share of problems .He is being raised by his elder brother in the absence of parents -his mother is dead and his father simply walks away from domestic responsibility .the movie is about how this personable and engaging -but not over bright -teenager strives to make sense of his world .It examines the pains and perils of growing up and Tex 's family life is not a bed of roses .The movie treats of themes untypical of Disney productions --booze, sex, fighting ,class distinction and economic problems ,school problems and the sudden need to grow up and assume responsibility more quickly than most . This is both the appeal and the problem of the movie-it is an adult look at children's lives and treats the issues seriously ,but tries to cram too much into a brief running time .Consequently the picture feels slightly overcooked and issue heavy . Still it is splendidly acted especially by Matt Dillon as Tex and by Meg tilly as his girl friend This is awarm hearted but not a sappy movie and its honesty ,sincerity and skill commend it to me ,but a little less plot would have made it better it was such fun to go back and see how much bixby has changed in 24 years. even though a few things are still there, most are gone now, as one person said, by the flood of 1986. the university towers, the round building they go into for the drug transaction is where my jr.-sr. prom was held in 1977. it was a good feeling just to recognize thee places and bring back great memories from the old days.. This unassuming little coming-of-age drama features Matt Dillon in the title role as a sweet, slightly dim teenager living with his older brother Mason (Jim Metzler) in a rural Oklahoma town. With an absentee father and a deceased mom, the two eke out a marginal existence; things get desperate enough for Mason to sell his and Tex's horses to have enough money for groceries. Mason is ready to graduate high school and has his sights set on Indiana University and a basketball scholarship; he has little patience for his younger brother and his antics, feeling like he has to babysit him to keep him out of trouble. Tex's partner-in-mischief is Johnny (Emilio Estevez), while Johnny's sister Jamie (Meg Tilly) is the object of Tex's crush. The two live under the stern eye of their authoritarian dad (Ben Johnson), foiling any ideas Tex may have about Jamie. If this film seems reminiscent ofThe Outsiders, it's because it's similarly based on an S.E. Hinton novel; its tone and mood also calls to mind early-'80s kid dramas such asBreaking AwayandMy Bodyguard. It's a quiet little movie, capturing the boredom and tedium of small-town life nicely, with good characterizations and early roles by the Brat Pack. Dillon helped define himself early on with troubled-teen roles, and this is a fine example.Texis also notable because it was one of the first adult dramas to come from Disney Studios.--Jerry Renshaw Rerations < Tex (Widescreen Edition) [VHS] >

Usually ships in 24 hours Senators Barack Obama and John McCain -- two men who were influenced by their fathers in very different ways. Sen. Obama's father was not present in the family for nearly all of his childhood -- but his father cast a long shadow of influence on his young son, nevertheless. And Sen. McCain's experience was virtually the opposite. His father -- and grandfather -- were both four-star admirals in the Navy and had profound influences on his life. He talks about the courage he drew from his father -- during the years he spent as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Mark Wexler is a photographer, filmmaker and the son of legendary cinematographer and two-time Oscar winner Haskell Wexler ("Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" "Coming Home," "American Graffiti"&the list goes on and on). Mark has made a new documentary about his father that is one part biography and one part therapy session -- including some great advice from some of his father's most famous collaborators. For anyone who has a complicated relationship with a loving but sometimes overbearing parent, this story will have the ring of truth for you. In that tug and pull of love and tension, especially during the adolescent years, a song from one of America's great singer-songwriters, Loudon Wainwright. It is a song written especially for his son Rufus, now also an acclaimed singer-songwriter. It's strikingly honest, remarkable and touching, as he speaks through song to his distant teenage son. Then a rite of passage for all parents -- a task that often falls to the dad: teaching a child to ride a bike. In one awkward and thrilling moment, Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Ron Suskind will explain how teaching your child to ride a two-wheeler can encapsulate the joy and the heartbreak of parenting. (Not quite....)
(Snakes, politics, sex, and murder in a small Iowa town.)
(McCain's Back and Better than Ever.....)
(Snakes in church and America in 1960) I'm glad I'm reading Ed Gorman's work at this stage of my 52-year old life for a few reasons, one of which is the wonderful trip back in time it offers ... I'm an Americana and nostalgia buff, so this series is wonderful. Tricky Dick (before he was officially tricky) is coming to town and a hot-looking, hard drinking, conservative judge is anxious for his arrival. There are religious fanatics enough to cover all denominations and the Dems are about to put up JFK (a catholic) to run for President ... now add some poisonous snakes and those crazies that worship through them (casting off evil spirits by holding rattlers) and kill a couple of the preachers and ... no spoilers here, just praise.
Another reason I'm glad to read Gorman's stuff now is the protagonist to this series seems so ahead of his time (just very well grounded with flaws we all can relate to --- not just another drunk {in fact, not a drunk or cocaine addict at all}) ... and, of course, it's just nice to read a clever writer with sharp dialogue minus the attitude.
This is my 2nd McCain read and I'm enjoying it as much as the first ... and mostly because of the recurring characters ... I already know them ... and like them all (republicans and democrats) ... isn't that cool? I think so.
Okay, Amici, you know enough to READ this series by now ... very clever stuff. This is the first book by Gorman I've read, and I expect it to be the last. I get the feeling the other reviewers read a different book.
On the positive side, this book does a fine job of depicting small-town life of 1960 through the nostalgic lens of an aging babyboomer, and I imagine that has a lot to do with it's appeal. And it is a very easy read.
On the negative side, the philosophic insight (the danger of anti-intellectualism) that is meant to provide background for the story, is rendered in the most simplistic terms. Quite simply, there are philosophic "good" guys and "bad" guys. The bad guys are depicted as something worse than pathetic in every regard. I'm not one who thinks a good mystery needs a guiding philosophic argument, but if it has one, it needs to not draw attention to itself.
The depiction of period seems a little forced, resting primarily on brand names, an infatuation with cigarettes and references to drinking habits and alcoholism. The dialogue often works well, but nearly every exchange includes a few lines that that veer either towards saccharine sentimentality or simplistic humor.
And what really put the nail in the coffin, the hero solves the mystery at the end based on two clues which were never shared with the reader! I'm not one to insist that a mystery follow the orderly progression (some would say clichés) of Agatha Christie's work, but this is not a mystery so much as a soap opera where some murders take place. This is the 4th of Gorman's "Sam McCain" mysteries set in a town called Black River Falls, Iowa during the "happy days" of the late 1950's and early 60's. Of course, they weren't always that happy, filled as they are in this story with religious prejudice, murder, bigotry, infidelity, and mysterious goings on. McCain is a likeable character, and Gorman does a good job of letting us get to know him in this and the other novels of the series. Young, idealistic, liberal, cynical, unlucky-in-love, as well as shorter than most of the other male population in town, McCain works for the enigmatic, larger than life Judge Esme Ann Whitney, a cynical, Republican, aristocratic scion of the town who regularly hires the young Sam (a lawyer with an private-eye license) to investigate any crimes or murders which might cast Black River Falls in a negative light. The fact that Judge Whitney and the local sheriff are mutual enemies usually complicates both McCain's sleuthing and life in general. In SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME, it is August, 1960. Presidential candidate Richard Nixon is coming to visit the town at the same time that a charismatic bigoted preacher has just been murdered (literally) while in the pulpit. McCain's assignment is to solve the crime of this unlikeable man's demise, even though no one involved seems to want to help him. The man's family, congregation, local law enforcement and a cage of "holy" rattlesnakes all figure prominently, as does a beautiful local reporter who is having problems in her marriage. I read the first 3 books before I read this one, but it isn't necessary to do so, as Gorman writes each book in the series with enough of McCain's musings about the past to explain who the important characters are in both the town and his personal life. SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME stands alone very well on it's own, although it will probably make you want to go out and read the others in the series. 5 Stars. It's the summer of 1960 in Black River Falls, Iowa, and Richard Nixon, on the campaign trail for president, is scheduled to stop in this little mid-western burg for a speech and reception. Fledgling lawyer and part-time private investigator, Sam McCain's boss, town heavy, Judge Esme Ann Whitney, is hosting the Vice President's visit, and she wants her town to shine like the middle American jewel it is. Unfortunately, the murder of a local snake-handling, Jew and Catholic hating, fundamentalist preacher, tends to put a real damper on the judge's plans. Police Chief, Cliffie Sykes, is totally useless in the crime solving department, so she orders McCain to get to work, and clear up this nasty case before Nixon's arrival."My Lord, we'll look like hillbillies. Snakes and Ozark faith healers. Good grief."But before he can even begin his investigation a second murder takes place, the local Protesant minister is gunned down in his garage. McCain's convinced these two crimes are related, and as he begins to dig, secrets start popping up all over town..... Ed Gorman is back with another delightful and nostalgic romp through yesteryear, with his well drawn, wacky and quirky cast of intriguing, original characters. His fast-paced plot really captures the essence of the '50s, and is entertaining, and full of marvelously vivid, laugh-out-loud scenes. But it's Mr Gorman's witty writing and wise-cracking, irreverent dialogue that really makes this novel stand out. Save The Last Dance For Me is short, sweet, engaging, and thoroughly enjoyable from the first page to the satisfying last. If you're new to Sam McCain and company, start at the beginning with The Day The Music Died, and read them all. If you're already a fan, Ed Gorman doesn't disappoint with his latest installment. This is a series that just keeps getting better and better. Sam McCain, attorney and sometimes investigator for Judge Esme Whitney, thinks that he's seen a lot--but he's never seen a church full of people sticking their hands in a box of rattlesnakes before. When the church's minister dies suddenly, everyone thinks one of the snakes got him--but McCain suspects murder. When a second minister suddenly dies, he's certain there is a connection, but exactly what the connection is, and who might be doing the killing remains unclear. In the meantime, McCain has to learn to deal with the strong attraction he feels toward married Kylie Burke.SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME is set in small-town Iowa during the 1960 Kennedy/Nixon election and Nixon's upcoming visit is very much on the minds of the characters. The conservatives in town are worried about Catholics and Jews uniting to overthrow the nation if Kennedy is elected, and jazz and rock and roll are hitting their stride. Author Ed Gorman presents this earlier America not as a nostalgic dream, nor as a nightmare, but as a past that is well left behind. Gorman does a fine job developing Sam McCain as an interesting and multidimensional character. His writing style is enjoyable and compelling. It'll make you want to keep reading. I found some of Gorman's observations to be a little cynical and condescending for my taste, but this didn't keep me from laughing out loud a couple of times or from enjoying SAVE THE LAST DANCE FOR ME.
As Black River Falls, Iowa, prepares for a presidential election campaign visit from Vice President Richard Milhous Nixon, Reverend John Muldaur is stirring up the town with both his anti-Catholic, anti-Semitic circulars and his snake-handling ceremonies. When Muldaur drops dead on his altar, however, it's not from a snakebite but from strychnine-laced Pepsi. With only a week before her good friend Tricky Dick comes to town, Judge Esme Whitney enlists her friend the struggling lawyer and occasional investigator Sam McCain to prevent the population of Black River Falls from looking like "a bunch of hillbillies." Once again, McCain must confront local prejudices, secrets, and dim-witted police chief Cliffe Sykes, Jr. to solve another small-town mystery in the acclaimed series launched with The Day the Music Died. Author Ed Gorman is the winner of many awards, including the Shamus, the Spur, and the International Fiction Writer's Award. "....provoke[s] a bracing nostalgia for a time that was neither as innocent nor as dull as is sometimes said."—Wall Street Journal "Without overworking those warhorses, nostalgia and kitsch, he sharply evokes the twilight of the '50s...."—Los Angeles Times "No writer captures the mood of 50s middle America ... better than Gorman."—Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine "Gorman ... seems to have hit a mother lode with this series."—Publishers Weekly " ....good and evil clash ... as they have in the more urban crime drama of Block or Leonard."—Booklist Rerations < Save the Last Dance for Me: A Sam McCain Mystery >

customer 's review (Nice storytelling, but what about copyediting?)
(A lucky Find.)
(retro revisionism)
(Easy read)
(Dissapointing) As many have pointed out, the date that Buddy Holly died is wrong, and song lyrics are misquoted. There are other copyediting errors as well. We are told that the Judge's grandfather was shipped out to Iowa after disgracing the family back east. But later it becomes the judge's greatgreatfather. There are other such minor gaffes. But far worse, especially for a novel in this genre, the hero solves the mystery with the help of a verbal clue referring to something a character said earlier. But I went back and reread that passage several times and the key line was never said! For a mystery such an error is disgraceful. Didn't anybody read this book before it went to press? All that aside, this is a minor but reasonably entertaining effort, with a nice breezy style and a likeable protagonist. There is little real suspense, however, and the author seems far more interested in depicting the late '50s small town Iowa setting than in building a creditable mystery. The"solution"to the crime seems tacked on and half-hearted. I found this one on the unwanted books rack at my local Gym. Never had heard of Ed Gorman before (turns out hes pretty prolific!) but this is a great 1st novel in this new series which takes place in the late 50s. I loved the plot, the characters, and the setting (midwest 'natch!)- I await my other books in the series! The characters and action in this book are possessed of a political correctness that did not exist in the Heartland (or probably anywhere else) at the time (whichever time that happens to be - February 3, 1958 or 1959 - see previous reviews.) In a time when June Cleaver wore chic dresses and real pearls everyday to wash&wax the kitchen floor, the author expects us to believe that one of the main characters is a FEmale judge and another main female character intends to go to law school? It just wasn't like that then.
Another error - let's try a little sing-a-long here: o/~ 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 . tell the people what she wore. She wore an itsy bitsy, teeny weenie, _____ polka dot bikini o/~ The author gets gonged here because he says it was pink. [p. 154, original hardcover ed.] Those of us old enough to know better will tell you it was yellow.
The mystery is just so-so and the ambiance the author takes pains to create is simply not credible because he needed fact checks! The author has another winning book, but don't expect much stimulation from it; it is an easy read, but that is not a bad thing. The characters and story are interesting, but there isn't much challenge to it, so you can just flow along until the end, and you will have a nice, entertaining time. Unhappily, the author is guilty of having some of his characters be more"politically correct"than would have been the case in '50s Iowa; it seems he is inserting his own sensibilities more often than is reasonable. At that time, people were both good and bad, as in most times, but they weren't as conscious of some of the distinctions then as now. In those days, newspapers and politicians weren't always beating everyone over the head about how they should think, and yelling at us to be so"inclusive."Even the most open-minded people then developed their own ideas and morals, with help from family and close friends, but the media didn't press us with many ideas and names. So the author's characters are nicely done, but their"politically correct"pronouncements are jarring and seem out of place for time and place of the story. But if a nice, easy read is what you need, and all of us do at times, then this should be satisifying. As historical fiction, and as a mystery, this books fails. Besides occasional references to convertibles and AM radio, the story could have been from any time. The mystery is uninvolving, and ultimately dissappointing. Veteran mystery writer, editor, and anthologist Ed Gorman plays all the right notes in his latest book--hopefully the first of a promising period series. It's 1959 (the book says 1958, but that must be a mistake, because everyone knows Buddy Holly died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959), and Sam McCain--"a young lawyer in a town that already had too many lawyers"--is working as an investigator in Black River Falls, Iowa, for Judge Esme Anne Whitney, a wealthy and eccentric old woman who smokes Gauloises in Chesterfield country and takes pleasure in shooting McCain with rubberbands while they confer. The day after a long drive to and from what turns out to be Buddy Holly's last concert before his fatal plane crash, McCain finds the murdered wife of Judge Whitney's rotten nephew, Kenny, and then is unable to stop Kenny from killing himself. Everybody, including the town's loutish police chief, is sure that Kenny killed his wife--only McCain has his doubts. Complicating things are the troubles of a local black former football star now crippled by booze, and those of McCain's teenage sister who is trying to abort her baby. The period details about race and sex seem dead right; the people of Black River Falls, especially McCain's family and various girlfriends, are all sharply-sketched; and even the very late appearance of a possible villain can't spoil the considerable fun. Previous examples of Gorman's craft, or sullen art, includeDaughter of Darkness,Black River Falls,Dark Trail,The First Lady,Hawk Moon,The Marilyn Tapes,Senatorial Privilege,Trouble Man, andCage of Night.--Dick Adler The first in a charming new series featuring Sam McCain, Judge Eleanor Whitney, and America in the 1950s. This will be a memorable weekend for McCain: Buddy Holly has just died in a plane crash; he's got investigative work to do for the judge; and he must help help his sister decide whether or not to have an abortion. Usually ships in 24 hours customer 's review (great book on black female elected officials)
(The Greates African-American Women in Congress) Too often, authors speak of blacks getting the right to vote, when in reality, it was only black men who could do so until 1920. Similarly, to this day, all the blacks are men and all the women are white, when it comes to talk about elected officials. Finally, here is a book to break the silence. McCain Gill discusses each black women that has ever been elected to Congress by the mid-1990s. Her style is journalistic and biographical. This would be a great book for all women of color majoring in political science. Further, for sistas thinking about running for office, this is a great tool for learning about the passages that have already been cleared for you. This book may seem a little dated now. Too, I wish someone would write a book like this that mentions all women of color, not just blacks. Still, I enjoyed this book and I thank McCain Gill (a woman, unlike another review suggests)for this positive contribution to womanist studies. This was a very good book. I would like to thank Mr. Laverne McCain Gill for writeing a book about these Congresswoman. I got to learn a lot about them from Senator Carol Moseley-Braun, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson-Lee, Cynthia McKinney and Maxine Waters and It is a great book to read as well as to keep. I Love this Book.
