(If you love Messenger, this CD is not for you.)

(Scream&Whisper-Edwin McCain)

(Not my favorite, but still awesome...)

(McCain Back with more unbelievable music)

(I WAS EXPECTING A LOT BETTER THAN THIS!)
My husband and I love Messenger, so much so it's on our iPod. After reading many favorable reviews for Scream&Wisper on Amazon, we happily purchased the CD, thinking it would be simular to Messenger. It's not. Scream&Wisper is mostly loud pounding music. After hearing it one time, we were so disappointed we tossed it.
Excellent CD from Edwin. He is one of the under-rated musicians/songwriters of our time. This CD has some great tracks - my favorite is Shooting Stars.
Edwin McCain is a master. Most people only know him as "that guy who sings "I'll Be" on Dawson's Creek." But he is much much more then that, he is a skilled musician that I have been lucky enough to see live twice. This CD is definitely good, and while its not my favorite EMB CD, its much better then most of the mainstream junk today. I'm definitely surprised Edwin didn't have atleast a top 40 hit with "Say Anything" (for all you first time listeners and "I'll Be" lovers, it will probably be your favorite track). Also the song "Couldn't Love You More" is a really good song for anyone who has ever been in a relationship that pretty much everybody was skeptical of. My favorite song on the CD is the risky "White Crosses" which tells the story of a truck full of illegal immigrants from Mexico being killed in Texas. The song is extremely compassionate and its obvious that Edwin is way above writing meaningless songs.
If you're a hardcore Ed head, of course you're going to buy the CD and its definitely worth it.
For the non-Edwin fans, if your looking for "I'll Be", theres a really good acoustic version of it on the CD titled "Messenger" ;-)

Screams&Wisphers is another great CD from Edwin McCain and his band. The song Couldnt love you more is a great song for lovers that have ever had doubters about there love, Edwin McCain is in my opinion one of the best singer song writers out, the way he makes you feel the songs and stories with his words is something only true artist can do. Not a big radio artist but that keeps him grounded and not caught up in the HOLLYWOOD sell out that so many of these so called artist give into - A great cd by a great artist and worth twice the price the sticker has on it, nothing Edwin McCain puts out is bad, if your a true fan of REAL music youll love anything Edwin McCain puts out
To say this was a dissapointment is an understatement. By track three i wondering if this was the same Edwin McCain that had made the masterful 'misguided roses' because this is so BLAND! it really was a struggle to listen to the whole thing and keeo my eyes opened-radio friendly isn't the word! I guess some of the signs were showing in the tinsel and tap shoes dvd with the ultra slushy 'couldn't love you more' and 'shooting stars' what do you get as a bonus track a version of 'maggie may' so close to the original as not to make a difference! The whole point of a cover is to do your own interpetation not a note for note re-run! So what has happened in the past years to make someone as talented as McCain heap this non-entity on his fans? Well giving Pete Riley a stab at songwriting both on his own and with McCain shows a possible drying up of ideas, because Riley's songs wouldn't be out of place on a latter day Fleetwood Mac album- they are that uninspired and there is hardly any barintone sax which always added to the songs and do i hear the dreaded drum machine in the mix? Come on Edwin a couple of half way decent songs on your new album is pushing the mark a bit. I for one will view the next album with a great deal of aprehension!

(Obviously, works for some people, but not me)

(Short of excellent, but certainly put this rampant experimenter on the map)

(Lots of variety)

(Zorn's first masterpiece)

(Definitely a must-have Zorn album!)
I bought this to fill out my "jazz core collection" as noted in The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings: Eighth Edition (Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings) (I'm working from both ends now), and I expected jazz. This is some kind of avant garde, fancy jazz, but not what I was hoping for, and not what I will listen to on a regular basis. This is a very musically, sonically, and tonically challenging work, and I consider the performances excellent, but simply put, this album will not bear up to repeated listening. When it comes to jazz, I know when I'm in the mood for Bill Evans, and when I'm in the mood for Duke Ellington, and in the mood for Billie Holiday, or in the mood for Miles Davis, etc. I will never be "in the mood" for John Zorn. This album sounds like what happens when a toy truck crashes into a music studio while the producers were taking a break watching a Clint Eastwood movie: hollow, tinny pianos, plastic snare drums, gunshot effects, and screaming. If you want a musically interesting CD, this is for you. If you want jazz music, you can take a pass on this.
3 1/2

Marking a noticeable evolution in this radical composer's one-of-a-kind-career, 1984's early breakthrough interpretations of the spaghetti western king proved a worthy and memorable endeavor. Through Zorn's typically cracked lens Morricone's dusty constructs are given a whole new, usually quite darkened reworking. More traditional fans of these original compositions may initially be turned off with the expansive and distorted liberties taken to resurrect these themes (as compositionally sound as much of the recording is, of course this long album comes with quite a few unsettling, anti-musical audio adventures) but any Zorn fan would be remiss not to own what would start out a long tradition of these fractured, often rewarding tributes.

John Zorn stepped away from his game piece albums and began to get into more conventional songs with "The Big Gundown". A set of 15 Ennio Morricone songs, and one Zorn-penned homage to a Morricone song, it's a difficult album to classify. Zorn is usually characterized as jazz, but this is a long long way from Louis Armstrong, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of improvisation. Zorn himself performs only on a minority of the songs. He's more of a producer-arranger. But, even if he isn't playing the alto sax, these songs bear Zorn's unmistakeable imprint. There's an original 1985 section, and Zorn added some bonus songs in 2000.

Let's describe all the songs since the music sample is often deceptive for this CD. "The Big Gundown" aims for creepy. There are ominous piano chords, dissonant noises, and screams. The music resolves somewhat when a Brazilian percussion section begins, and ends with some Rawhide-esque "ha"'s. "Peur Sur La Ville" is built around an unsettling piano figure and noises. It has a unconventional free-jazz aura to it. "Poverty" is a quiet song based on Toots Thielman's whistling. "Milano Odeo" is a catchy, almost rock-n-roll song taken at a brisk pace. As the song goes on, the keyboards get more unsettling and the guitar gets noisier. "Erotico" has bluesy organ, and Bill Frisell's most romantic electric guitar (in an '80's way) paired with female vocalizations. "Battle Of Algiers" might be my favorite (maybe just because of the represented movies I've seen it's my favorite). Wayne Horvitz pounds out the tense piano line while sounds effects explode in the background. "Giu La Testa" has a slow build for about four minutes, then there's a plucking, walking part to take the song out. "Metamorfosi" is a good song to play when you want guests to leave, Diamanda Galas screams on top of tribal drums. "Tre Nel 5000" is credited to Zorn as a composer. To me, it sounds like a 4 1/2 minute dose of ambient noise. "Once Upon A Time In The West" starts quietly and deliberately, with feedback swelling and decaying. Robert Quine and Jody Harris play their guitars otherwise very minimalistically (not minimally, the feedback is constant). That ends the 1985 section of the CD.

The 2000 section uses an updated cast of players. "The Sicilian Clan" is familiar from the "Naked City" CD, though the instrumentation is more acoustic, and Cyro Baptista adds "western movie" percussion. "Macchie Solari" is another unsettling song. It ends in a fit of crashing piano chords and screams. "The Ballad Of Hank McCain" teams Mike Patton's heroic baritone with Jamie Saft's organ and Baptista's background congas. It's one of the more accessible songs, I wonder what it would sound like with a fuller band. The later instrumental version sounds about the same except, of course, without singing. "Svegliatti And Uccidi", with Marc Ribot and Derek Bailey on guitar-mangling duties, is a skronky blow-out. "Chi Mai", with the same musicians as "The Sicilian Clan", has a pretty melody and gentle music.

Some of these songs are very cool and original, others I can go without. Since it's a mixed bag I give it three stars. Zorn is certainly an original, and fans will want to make sure they have this one.

One of the best albums in Zorn's catalog, "The Big Gundown" is a masterpiece augmented in this 15th anniversary edition with a number of new recordings. These are reinterpretations of Mooricone pieces (with one Zorn original) for various groups. The entire record is powerful and energetic, with breathtaking arrangements, brilliant performances, and a fire that had not been captured in Zorn's previous recordings. It is also probably his first true masterpiece.

I think in many ways, the opener and title track best illustrates the aesthetic on the record, if you don't like that one, you'll probably not care for the rest of it-- it covers a number of moods, being dark, haunting, theatrical, explosive and esoteric, sometimes all at once. This sort of theatrical mood extends across a number of songs, the haunting circular piano and percussion workout "Peur Sur la Ville" (with a blazing alto sax solo from Tim Berne), an the dark electric guitar workout take of "Once Upon a Time in the West", reduced a funereal pace.

But there are also many moments of delicate beauty as well-- take for instance "Poverty (Once Upon a Time in America)", with an unusual instrumentation of whistling, harmonica (both handled by Toots Theilman), harp and accordian. Particularly when the harmonica takes the melody, the support swells and embraces and holds on, expressing pain and loss and fear for the future. Or consider the brooding and yet someone still light "Giu la Testa (Duck You Sucker!)", building anticipation through its dark motifs and bizarre instrumentation (among others, the Japanese shamisen, english horn, acoustic guitar, gamecalls and keyboards).

The bonus tracks are no less essential-- Zorn brought in about everyone he played with for the originals, these were a chance to catch up. The amazing thing about Zorn is that as an arranger, he's lost none of his flair in the intervening years, in fact, he may have even gotten better. Zorn uses his "Bar Kokhba" sextet (the Masada String Trio augmented by guitarist Marc Ribot, drummer Joey Baron and percussionist Cyro Baptista) to great effect on breathtaking arrangements of "The Sicilian Clan" and "Chi Mai", and adds another great guitar workout feature with Ribot and Derek Bailey in a noisy, disjoint take of "Sveggliatti and Uccidi", but its Mike Patton's Tom growl on "The Ballad of Hank McCain" that is the gem of the material-- stunning delivery that really captures something special (and may be the best vocal Patton has ever done) over a delicate organ (Jamie Saft) and percussion (Baptista) backdrop that matches and perhaps outstrips the best of the original material.

This is essential music for Zorn fans, if you're not, this may well be a good place to start-- the music can be difficult, and it covers a ton of moods, but there is a lot to hear. Highly recommended.

I've got about 30 Zorn albums, and this was the first I heard, back in college late during an all-nighter. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Fantastic stuff, and very weird. This is more listenable than some, but definitely not the most easy of Zorn's albums. Great treatments of some familiar pieces if you're into spaghetti westerns.

This is on my must-have list for Zorn albums.
As if John Zorn's super-creative take on film composer Ennio Morricone weren't essential in its first iteration on Nonesuch Records, Zorn is celebrating the album's 15th anniversary with an updated, remastered version. The darker lows and brighter highs make thisGundownclearly superior--with its original cast of characters (Bill Frisell, Arto Lindsay, Diamanda Galas, and many more) sounding alternately darker, sultrier, and more cinematic than ever. Zorn's reticence to record the original album's 10 pieces looks altogether unreasonable, as his genius for adding color and dimension to Morricone's tunes shows profusely. To make this an even better deal, there are six new bonus tracks that feature Marc Ribot as part of an ad hoc string quartet on "The Sicilian Clan" and "Chi Mai," and as sparring partner with British avant guitar god Derek Bailey on the roaring "Svegliatti and Uccidi." This one's magnificently important.--Andrew Bartlett

(Awesome!)

(All Edwin Fans should add to your collection...)

(Awesome companion to Scream&Whisper CD)

(Buy This DVD - You Won't Be Sorry!!!)

(Exceptional DVD&CD combo)
This DVD is a lot of fun. Lots of new songs (well, they were new when the DVD came out) and some different versions of the songs we love. If you love Edwin you'll love this DVD. We put it on and play it through the surround sound like a cd. I listened to this the entire time I was pregnant and now my son is soothed when he hears Edwin songs. I wish Edwin would make this DVD in CD version so I can play it in my car.
Edwin is a great songwriter/storyteller/musicain. Live at the House of Blues is a very good DVD. Edwin has a loyal following, and if you are just a casual fan, you might be converted to the Edwin Army after you view this. While I am sure some fans would like to have their Edwin favorite tune included on this DVD, lets face it, there just isn't enough time to get them all in one show or DVD. With 14 performance songs and 5 additional tunes on the bonus CD, this is a great DVD/CD to experience what a loyal group of followers already know. Edwin can sing a story!

Edwin picked a place not to far from home in a venue that showcases his strenghts well. I enjoy the banter between songs. The band is always excellent. Most of these folks have been playing with him for quite some time. They are tight. Pete Riley does a fine job on backing vocals.

As far as song selection, just because it doesn't have several I would have loved to hear/see, i.e "Go Be Young", and "What Matters", I am not going to count that (see remark above). My choice for favs on the DVD are My Mystery (The opening tune), I'll Be, and Maggie May.

If there is one little thing to nit pick, it would be the quality of the camera work on the DVD. There are some jump cuts and the far shots of the band playing make it not as crisp as I might have expected. Again, I am a fan, not a producer/camera person. It is something that just strikes me, and I am probably alone in that.

Botton line is this is a excellent purchase. Even better, if you have a chance to see Edwin live, by all means do it. Either way, you will want the DVD. It is a fine representation of what The Edwin McCain band is and how fine of concert they perform.

Scream and Whisper is awesome, but if you haven't gotten the new DVD, "Tinsel&Tap Shoes," you are missing out. The DVD is the answer for everyone who has been asking for a LIVE CONCERT on DVD. And to make it better... there is a bonus audio CD in the same package. Get S&W first... then buy the DVD. Don't pass go&don't collect $200.

This DVD was filmed over 2 days at the House of Blues, N. Myrtle Beach... one of my favorite Edwin venues. BOTH nights were magical, and they picked the best-of-the-best for this DVD. IF you have never seen Edwin and the band LIVE, this will give you a HINT of what you can expect to hear and see in person. You will NOT regret buying this DVD!!!!

Once in a decade or so comes a talent this huge. That Edwin McCaine can write from such a world-weary perspective belies his age. Song after song, his words touch the heart, bringing forth tears of both joy and sadness. And that's just the lyrics.

The voice. How can it be that one so young can sing with so much soul? Song after song, delivering just the right emotion to drive his poetry home. The perfect balance of melody and driving soul.

Don't for a moment try to group Edwin's music in with the talentless, marketing packages that are so prevalent these days. His talent eclipses any 50 of these combined!

On to the DVD. I found this to be an excellent sampler of Edwin's music. His band consistently kicks out the songs, with nary a wrong note. Personal favorites are "Coming Down" and "Shooting Stars". The high point of the DVD is "Beautiful Life", in which Edwin's band cuts loose.

If I had anything to complain about, it would be that though every song is delivered impeccably, the band plays it all a little too safe for my tastes. the exception is the aforementioned "Beautiful Life" which shows what they're capable of. I only wished they'd stretched like that on a few more songs.

So, if you haven't hit the "Buy Now" button yet, go ahead and do it - you won't be sorry. While you're at it, pick out a few of his CD's. There's nary a bad one in the bunch - a further testament to the talent of this young man!

Edwin McCain is arguably the best lyricist and songwriter of the last decade. This DVD catches he and his band in a period of rebirth in their music. These are songs to capture your soul.

(The Patch Review)

(Waited and waited)

(A DRAMIC COMEDY)

(Patch Adams is my daily inspiration!)

(A prescription for a good movie...Patch Adams!)
I really enjoy this Movie I'm glad i was able to get it. It came in good condition and there were no scratches on the disks.
I didn't receive the item till after the deadline shipment date. i was supposed to receive it by the 18th and didnt get it till later. Boo
I'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE BUT NEVER KNEW PATCH ADAMS WAS A REAL PERSON. ROBIN WILLIAMS PLAYS THIS ROLE BEAUTIFULLY. PERFECTLY PUTTING COMEDY AND DRAMA IN THE RIGHT PLACE
For me, "Patch Adams" is the best film ever to remind us all that laughter is the best medicine. It is fresh as a squirting daisy--not a cliched or sentimental moment in the script. The scene where the little children with cancer all arrive in the courtroom wearing rubber clown noses to support Patch in his hour of need is one of the most unexpected and deeply moving things you will ever see. If you don't cry at that moment, you must not be human.

I think everybody should be more like Patch. At the auto garage where I work I've used some of Patch's techniques to liven up the atmosphere-- putting an oil funnel on top of my head, wearing a fake mustache and funny eyeglasses, cracking lots of jokes. Think about it for a minute--your car breaks down, you have to sit by the roadside all afternoon in the hot sun, the tow truck costs an arm and a leg. Aren't you going to want a little comic relief while I explain how you need to have a new transmission installed? I thought so!

"Patch Adams" is more than a movie--it's a way of life!

I have fallen in love with this movie by Robin Williams. Funny moments and quite touching. He delivers an excellent performance about the life of this individual giving the joy of laughter and medicine. If you enjoy a true to life story (full of noodles and red noses), I highly recommend this!
Patch Adamsraises two schools of thought: There are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics.

Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful do-gooderà laGood Will HuntingandDead Poets Societyis getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest, and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development.Patch Adams, though, does provide the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end.--Jenny Brown

("Stand by Me"--a must-see!!!)

(Nostalgia, almost...)

(The BEST movie about the "growing up" years!)

(Great memories...)

(2.5 stars out of 4)
I ordered the DVD of the movie, "Stand By Me". I had seen this movie in the theater, back in the '80s, with my sister, Eva Cassidy---the wonderful singer who died in 1996 from cancer......
Eva and I LOVED this movie, and us watching it together in the theater is a wonderful memory I will have forever.......
This movie delves deeply into the hearts, minds, and souls of these youngsters. It is at times funny, and then heart-breaking, and most people who watch this movie will recall their own childhoods.
This movie is one you will want to watch again and again, which is why I bought the DVD in the first place!
This movie was directed by Rob Reiner, and was based on a story by Stephen King--need I say more?!!!
Buy this for yourself--you will not be disappointed!

I'm a baby-boomer that has seen and enjoyed this movie many times. I have read a number of reviews complaining about the profanity of the four boys. I lived for over 20 years across the street from a grade school and, believe me, boys that age (and even younger) DO enjoy tossing profanity around when teachers or adults aren't around, and many of them are quite adept at smoking cigarettes, too. (In this day and age, little girls are just as likely to do so.) Back in the 50's, though, I can't recall hearing boys or girls using the f-bomb as these kids did in the movie. That word didn't gain popularity until later...Just an observation.
"Stand By Me" is the BEST movie ever made about the "growing up" years, when one is about 13 years old. Think of it as sort of a "Wonder Years" of the big screen. All the young actors gave AMAZING performances, but I have to say that River Phoenix's is the standout.

It's a tragedy how the River Phoenix story ended. Such a TALENTED young actor. Who knows what movies he would be making today. Perhaps he would be as big a star as Johnny Depp is. I think he would.

Rob Reiner has directed FOUR films I consider to be CLASSICS. These are "This Is Spinal Tap", "When Harry Met Sally", "Misery" and of course, "Stand By Me". I must mention what I think are the two best scenes in this movie.

The first (and best) is the "pie story" Gordie tells by the campfire. CLASSIC! The second is the "train dodge" by Gordie and Vern on the trestle.

If you want to see a pre "24" Kiefer Sutherland, check him out here.

"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Does anyone?"

This is a classic and a must have to any DVD collection. Brings back memories of the good old days and youth. It is the adventure which molded their lives forever.
The Bottom Line:

A maudlin movie which coasts on a wave of pure nostalgia to its shattering anti-climax of a conclusion, Stand By Me is inexplicably beloved despite being a completely forgettable film: unless you happen to love the song Lollipop or want to see lots of boys crying and hugging, stay away.

A sleeper hit when released in 1986,Stand by Meis based on Stephen King's novella "The Body" (from the bookDifferent Seasons); but it's more about the joys and pains of boyhood friendship than a morbid fascination with corpses. It's about four boys ages 12 and 13 (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell) who take an overnight hike through the woods near their Oregon town to find the body of a boy who's been missing for days. Their journey includes a variety of scary adventures (including a ferocious junkyard dog, a swamp full of leeches, and a treacherous leap from a train trestle), but it's also a time for personal revelations, quiet interludes, and the raucous comradeship of best friends. Set in the 1950s, the movie indulges an overabundance of anachronistic profanity and a kind of idealistic, golden-toned nostalgia (it's told in flashback as a story written by Wheaton's character as an adult, played by Richard Dreyfuss). But it's delightfully entertaining from start to finish, thanks to the rapport among its young cast members and the timeless, universal themes of friendship, family, and the building of character and self-esteem. Kiefer Sutherland makes a memorable teenage villain, and look closely for John Cusack in a flashback scene as Wheaton's now-deceased and dearly missed brother. A genuine crowd-pleaser, this heartfelt movie led director Rob Reiner to even greater success with his next film,The Princess Bride.--Jeff Shannon

(One of the best 80s movies ever&an all time classic for any age!!!)

(WOW)

(DVD purchase)

(Footloose and Free!)

(Great flick, ok transfer)
This movie is awesome... Coming from one of the best decades ever, having an incredible soundtrack, great acting, and a unique story line- this movie is one of the best ever&will continue to be watched by every age group for years to come.

The movie brings back so many memories for me...
I still get just as excited watching it now, as I did back in the day!

Lori Singer and Kevin Bacon were perfect for the roles and what about Chris Penn's performance??? he did a superb job...

This movie never get's old and is just plain AWESOME!!!

I hope they put it on bluray disc...

Thanks for reading my review...

I saw this in the movies when it first came out, but I was amazed how many of the songs in the show are now 'standards'. We recently saw the road show in Ft. Lauderdale and it inspired us to buy the DVD. (The movie's better!!)
product received was as advertised, and in great condition. Would buy from this vendor again.
I cannot believe it has been 25 years ago that we watched this movie in the theatres! Wow!
It caused an uproar then with our friends but today seems somewhat calm and shows that kids really need a little freedom of expression to do what comes naturally. Of course, all within reason and respect.
Still a great movie to watch with your grandkids and talk about what things were like "back in the old days!"

Footloose is a bit of a classic, and still fun to watch. Great 80's dance tunes that take me back to my high school years. It's great to see the film in its original aspect, but there are a few scenes/shots, especially towards the beginning, where there is some noticeable artifacting or lack of resolution in the video. Not terrible, but enough to warrant the four-star rating instead of five. Still a good buy. (This review pertains to the Special Collector's Edition DVD).
Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) pulled a winning movie out of this almost self-consciously archetypal tale of teenage rock rebellion. Kevin Bacon stars as a hip city kid who ends up in a Bible-belt town after his parents divorce. An ill fit for a conservative community where rock is frowned upon and dancing is forbidden, Bacon's character rallies the kids and takes on the establishment. Between a good cast really embracing the drama of Dean Pitchford's screenplay, and Ross's imaginative, highly charged way of shooting the dance numbers, you can get lost in this all-ages confection, and you won't even mind Kenny Loggins's bubbly pop. Bonuses include one of John Lithgow's best performances (a bit reminiscent of Jimmy Stewart), and Christopher Penn (who sure doesn't look the same anymore) as a good-natured hick who learns to boogie.--Tom Keogh

(Ideal for tonight's McCain celebration party)
Along with everyone else in the world, my family are busy getting ready for the party to celebrate the election of John McCain. I have cooked an Alaskan-style buffet to honour his fair running mate: stuffed wolf en croûte, pickled squirrel knackers and a bubbling brew of crude oil.

Hung outside our house, these wonderful party lights will ensure that all right-minded people can join in our festivities, when once again we shall celebrate the election of a Republican leader who will continue the mission of GWB to bring peace and prosperity to all.

John McCain for President in 2008 Republican Party Lantern Indoor/Outdoor String lights, with 5 John McCain and 5 Republican elephant white lantern plastic covers (2 1/2 inches tall x 1 1/4 inches wide) all identical to the one in the picture. The 12 foot wire in this set of string lights is green and constructed like an extention cord so up to two additional sets of string lights can be added. These sets are specially configured by us for you and pulled from our brand new never used inventory. Some assembly is required, as in putting covers on lights.

(Yes, She Can!)

(Get on the campaign trail with Barbie)
In an historic year, what better way to inspire a little lady in your life? I seached high and low to find one. The pink presidental ball gown is a bit...ummm... bright, but her suit is lovely. She also has essentials for launching a successful campaign, and, of course, accessories. It is my hope that the recepients keept the dolls in mint condition as a reminder that they can be ANYTHING they want to be when they grow up...maybe even president!
In this historic election, this package still would be a good idea to encourage little girls that they too have a right to seriously consider running for--and also being elected to--the Oval Office.

It would be nice to see a 'First Gentleman Ken' finally getting produced in tandem with these series. He again is missing from this and other packages in the 'President Barbie' series.

But I am pleased that 'candidate Barbie' was given a more professional campaign trail wardrobe during this campaign season. Her blue pinstripe suit does look like it would travel well whether she visits board rooms, public schools, or town halls.

To further help those rallies which will get staged, campaign posters, etc are included in the package. This generates crowd excitement. Barbie is the candidate who will address their issues effectively!

And in anticipation of the inauguration, we see her inaugural ball gown. It is a spaghetti strap pink number. While the shade of pink is very bright, it does not have a lot of jewels on it. It could still reasonably be something which Barbie would feel comfortable wearing in a traditionally conservative environment such as a political ball.

Barbie doll is just the ticket for election-day success in classic blue stripes and must-have accoutrements - cell phone, laptop computer and laptop case. Add a little glam with extra fashions for the inaugural evening from the beautiful gown to lovely evening accessories. DUE TO PACKAGING CHANGE, DOG IS NO LONGER INCLUDED!

(A Decent Introduction on the Subject)

(World War II for Kids)

(What it was like for kids to live during World War II)

(7 year old loves this book)
This book generally delivers on its purpose, which is to introduce young readers to the important topic of World War II. In my estimation, if your child isn't already interested, this book may not necessarily awaken him or her (Ambrose's "The Good Fight" is better), but for your interested son or daughter, ages 8 to 13 or so, this is a useful resource. As a history it is pretty light, but it is not a bad overview, and provides some great insight into the Home Front and other non-traditional perspectives on the War. There are a few WW-II themed crafts and activity ideas, all of which are pointless and the very type of things that children and their parents ignore the world over.
Wonderful for history buffs of all ages. Approiate for younger readers, filled with activities to spark dialog about War and sacrifice.
"World War II for Kids: A History with 21 Activities"really has three key components. First, there is a history of World War II from Hitler's rise to power in 1933 to the surrender of the Japanese in 1945. Second, Richard Panchyk provides excerpts from actual wartime letters written to and by troops on both sides along with personal anecdotes from people who lived through the war. Finally, there are 21 activities that can show young readers how it felt to live through World War II, both on the battlefield and on the Home Front.

Actually, the first function is the least impressive part of"World War II for Kids,"although Panchyk provides a solid history of the war. It is just that the personal writings and recollections, along with the activities, are where Panchyk goes beyond what you would find in your standard American history textbook, which is why this is an excellent supplemental volume. Teachers can certainly use the activities and quote from the letters found in this volume to give students more of a sense of what it was like to live during that time.

The 21 activities are fairly interesting and cover a variety of subjects. Some are fairly complex, such as substituting a potato for an incendiary bomb and following the instructions on how to extinguish it, or staging a radio adventure program, while others are relatively simply, such as drawing a recruiting poster. There is an exercise in code breaking, learning how to camouflage, making a ration kit, going on a reconnaissance mission, figuring oat a coastal defense, the physics of dropping bombs, and a game that helps demonstrate the difference between mortar and howitzer fire versus anti-tank and anti-aircraft fire. There are also"Home Front"activities like making a bandage, putting together a care package, growing a Victory Garden, sending V-Mail, and extending butter, as well as a couple of activities having to do with the Holocaust by making a Jewish star and trying to find good hiding places in your home for the student and an adult helper.

Obviously some of these activities are going to be more practical and more beneficial than others, but Panchyk has made an attempt to come up with different ways of giving his young readers an idea of what it was like for kids and adults during World War II. Again, while young readers can certainly read this book and try the activities on their own,"World War II for Kids"is even better suited as a resource for teachers to use when teaching the pivotal events of World War II. Comparing what life was like for their grandparents during that war as opposed to the rather limited impact on their lives today during the war on terrorism could be quite an eye opener for young readers.
My 7 year old son is a WWII fanatic and loves this book. It discusses not only events in the war itself, but also the impact of the war on life in the U.S. The activities encourage kids to think about far-reaching effects of war, not just the exciting battles.
Now more than ever, kids want to know about our country's great struggles during World War II. This book is packed with information that kids will find fascinating, from Hitler's rise to power in 1933 to the surrender of the Japanese in 1945. Much more than an ordinary history book, it is filled with excerpts from actual wartime letters written to and by American and German troops, personal anecdotes from people who lived through the war in the United States, Germany, Britain, Russia, Hungary, and Japan, and gripping stories from Holocaust survivors-all add a humanizing global perspective to the war. This collection of 21 activities shows kids how it felt to live through this monumental period in history. They will play a rationing game or try the butter extender recipe to understand the everyday sacrifices made by wartime families. They will try their hands at military strategy in coastal defense, break a code, and play a latitude and longitude tracking game. (The Real McCain!)

(A Legendary Family)

(Sad that America Could Have done Better with this Great Man.)

(60% of it is surprisingly enticing.)

(Compelling!!!)
It has become commonplace for Presidential (and, yes, Vice Presidential) candidates to have a published book in the bookstores at some point in the campaign for the Oval Office. Barack Obama has two memoirs published, Senator McCain has three books out, Joe Biden has his book out, and even Governor Palin has at least two books out about her (though, admittedly, not written by her). Among Senator McCain's published books is Faith of My Fathers, a family memoir that is entirely not about politics. In fact, Faith ends long before Senator McCain's election to any public office, with his release from captivity as a prisoner in North Vietnam.

It has certainly been played out in the media throughout Senator McCain's campaign that he is an American hero, having given his entire life (and, in fact, nearly giving up his life) to the service of his country. His commitment to serve the country he loves so much landed him in the brutal captivity of the North Vietnamese for five years during the Vietnam War, where he was brutally beaten, tortured, and left dying with no medical treatment other than the advice that he should eat better and exercise more. As if his diet was of his own choosing, and his tiny cell provided ample room for an adequate workout.

This is not an article to ask you to vote for Senator McCain on November 4, though I wish you would. It is not an article intended to list the many reasons that Senator McCain is clearly the best candidate to lead this country into the next decade, though I believe he is. This article is a review of Senator McCain's book Faith of My Fathers, which explains the foregone conclusion of his Naval career, familiarizes the reader with John McCain I and John McCain II (his grandfather and father, respectively), and in sometimes painful description details the Senator's ordeal as a Prisoner of War in Vietnam. None of those things have anything to do with Senator McCain's readiness or ability to be the next President of the United States of America. Senator McCain is an American hero, and would be an American hero even if he wasn't running for the office of President. Through reading Senator McCain's account in Faith of My Fathers, one learns that the good Senator does not consider himself a hero -- merely an American paying back his country for the priceless gift of freedom with his own blood, sweat, and tears.

No one who goes to war believes once he is there that it is worth the terrible cost of war to fight it by half measures. War is too horrible a thing to drag out unnecessarily. It was a shameful waste to ask men to suffer and die [in Vietnam], to persevere through awful afflictions and heartache, for a cause that half the country didn't believe in and our leaders weren't committed to winning. They committed us to it, badly misjudged the enemy's resolve, and left us to manage the thing on our own without authority to fight it to the extent necessary to finish it.
Yet Senator McCain and his fellow prisoners fought as they could, kept their faith, and resisted to the best of their ability the attempts of their brutal captors to break them. It is well reported that John McCain was offered early release because his father was an Admiral in the Navy at the time of his captivity, and it would benefit the NVA to use McCain's early release as propaganda against American forces. It is also well reported that John McCain refused early release, stating that he would not accept release until everyone captured ahead of him was released ahead of him.

What is not so widely reported is that John McCain was offered early release several times before his refusal was accepted. And every time he refused, he was severely beaten and thrown into solitary confinement to reconsider his decision. Beatings that resulted in broken bones that received no medical treatment. And every time John McCain was hauled back in to ask if he had reconsidered, this patriotic American refused early release, and was beaten again. These beatings ended in the forced confession of war crimes by John McCain, though his confession was peppered with comments and language designed to make it clear to anyone who might hear the confession that it was derived by means of brutal torture and given under extreme duress.

Faith of My Fathers is at the same time a heart breaking and inspiring account of a man who has lived the motto of Country First his entire life. But at the same time, Senator McCain tells us of the many other heroes who were held captive with him. He tells of how he believes that other American Prisoners of War were subjected to greater torture and more severe abuse than he -- that he was spared the worst treatment because his father was an Admiral commanding the forces that were fighting in Vietnam at the time. Throughout Faith of My Fathers, Senator McCain introduces us to other American hereoes, like Mike Christian.
Mike was a Navy bombardier-navigator who had been shot down in 1967, about six months before I arrived. He had grown up near Selma, Alabama. His family was poor. He had not worn shoes until he was thirteen years old. Character was their wealth. They were good, righteous people, and they raised Mike to be hardworking and loyal. He was seventeen when he enlisted in the Navy. As a young sailor, he showed promise as a leader and impressed his superiors enough to be offered a commission.

What packages we were allowed to receive from our families often contained handkerchiefs, scarves, and other clothing items. For some time, Mike had been taking little scraps of red and white cloth, and with a needle he had fashioned from a piece of bamboo he laboriously sewed an American flag onto the inside of his blue prisoner's shirt. Every afternoon, before we ate our soup, we would hang Mike's flag on the wall of our cell and together recite the Pledge of Allegiance. No other event of the day had as much meaning to us.

The guards discovered Mike's flag one afternoon during a routine inspection and confiscated it. They returned that evening and took Mike outside. For our benefit as much as Mike's, they beat him severely, just outside our cell, puncturing his eardrum and breaking several of his ribs. When they had finished, they dragged him bleeding and nearly senseless back into our cell, and we helped him crawl to his place on the sleeping platform. After things quieted down, we all lay down to go to sleep. Before drifting off, I happened to look toward a corner of the room, where one of the four naked lightbulbs that were always illuminated in our cell cast a dim light on Mike Christian. He had crawled there quietly when he thought the rest of us were sleeping. With his eyes nearly swollen shut from the beating, he had quietly picked up his needle and thread and begun sewing a new flag.
Faith of My Fathers should be required reading for every American born after 1960; every American who needs a refresher course on the perils of war; every American who thinks it wise to turn tail and run without finishing the job and defending the causes for which America stands.

[...]

A painfully honest family story. Much of this book focuses on John McCain's father and grandfather, both of whom had significantly more successful military careers.

McCain clearly admired his father/grandfather and wanted to follow in their footsteps. He seemed to be cut from a different cloth and fate delivered a very different set of life experiences. The stories regarding his treatment in North Vietnam showed him to be a person who could endure great hardship and still retain his faith and sanity.

Reading this book gave me a much better understanding of him as a candidate and politician. The traits which allowed him to survive as a POW and a career in the military do not always serve him well in politics. I have no doubt that he is an honorable man who puts love of country above all else. Unfortunately, those same traits are what keep him from being a successful national candidate.

Highly recommended.

Reading this Book, It is so sad, that America Made such a Bad Choice, And that the Media was in the tank the whole time for the other candidate despite so much controversy surrounding the other candidate. You have to Admire a Man Like Mccain what He did For His Country, and Continues to do so. He is not Perfect, But His Experience could have helped us so much, Sadly Hollywood and other Extreme elements did not Think so. This Book Is Great, Revealing of A Great Man Who Sadly Could have been, As a 26 year old, I never brought that this man Could die as the popular belief was in his first four years, which is one of the reasons people gave that he was too old, but with age comes wisdom and experience, This Man Served For the Greater Cause, Was A P.O.W. and was a Champion Of Finance Reform, I urge all Including the other candidates supporters to read this Book.
Oh John McCain, I do feel very bad that you've gone through so much. Perhaps you should have told Mr. Salter (the ex-security guard turned novelista) to focus more on that and less on the near one hundred pages of exposition touting your father and his father's accomplishments and quirky views on life. Everyone's familiar with the little piece of Americana that is the perpetually is-he-or-isn't-he-drunk father, and that exposition displays it in spades. However, we the readers would probably rather hear about the gritty, mind-numbingly foreign Hanoi Hotel and how you managed to stay sane (and proudly patriotic) in a situation that not many can even dare to sympathize with.

I was required to read this book for a college class (in one of the more moderate to extreme liberal universities in New York), and was pleasantly surprised at the better portions of the book. The writing is done well for what it is, descriptive in the same way a dictionary is. At times, it feels as if the prose should have a bit more "oomph". I mean, if you're going into detail about how fellow prisoners stayed sane through inhuman torture, then give credit where credit's due. Salter makes water torture sound like frying eggs for breakfast on a sleepy Thursday morning.

All in all a good read. A wonderful story, but sadly, probably less enticing now that the election's over. Second place is the first loser after all. Probably not worth buying in hard copy, too. Oh, and the cover is nice. (Is that bleached hair John is sporting in the 70's? How fierce.)

I've had Faith of My Fathers on my shelf for a while, having previously lightly skimmed select portions of the book. In the wake of the recent election, however, I decided to go back and read the book cover to cover. I'm glad I did because I was enthralled throughout, though not in the traditional sense of a suspenseful mystery novel. To be honest, some of the early chapters which lay the foundation of his life and motivations are a bit of a grind to get through. What was undeniable, however, is that the pace picked up as the presentation of the candid and inspirational chronicle of McCain's life unfolded. While perhaps not riveting prose, it is clearly a compelling story of honor, duty, and principle. I'm thankful I went back and finally read the entire book.
Books by politicians are not often worth reading, but John McCain'sFaith of My Fathersis an astonishing exception to the rule. The Republican senator from Arizona has a remarkable story to tell--better than just about any of his peers--and he tells it well, with crisp prose and an unexpected sense for narrative pacing. The first half of the book concerns his naval forbears: his grandfather commanded an aircraft carrier in the Second World War, while his father presided over all naval forces in the Pacific during the Vietnam War. They were the first father-son admirals in American history. Young John McCain knew he had enormous shoes to fill and rebelled against many of the expectations set for him. At the Naval Academy, he was nearly expelled, graduating fifth from the bottom of his class. He never became an admiral, but achieved fame another way: as a naval aviator in 1967, he was shot down over North Vietnam and spent several years in POW camps, where he was beaten, tortured, and nearly allowed to die. McCain describes the awful details of his imprisonment and tells how he stayed mentally strong during seemingly endless months of solitary confinement and how he communicated in code with fellow captives.Faith of My Fathersconcludes with McCain's release and contains no information about his subsequent political career. It is, nonetheless, a complete and compelling memoir of individual heroism--one that will interest both political and military history buffs.--John J. Miller

Senator John McCain learned about life and honor from his grandfather and father, both four-star admirals in the U.S. Navy.Faith of My Fathersis about how their lessons enabled McCain to survive the greatest challenge of his life—when, as a naval aviator, he was shot down over Hanoi in 1967, seriously wounded, and imprisoned for more than five years.

Told with humility, grace, and humor, it is a story of three imperfect men who faced adversity—and emerged with their honor intact.

The Epic Story of America's Most Legendary Warship Intrepid by Bill White and Robert Gandt is a very comprehensive history of a the aircraft carrier Intrepid. I reside within fifteen miles of the Intrepid and have visited her many times. I know of the history of the Intrepid, but the book made me realize how little I actually knew of the legendary aircraft carrier.
I was aware she served in WW II in the Pacific and Senator John McCain was a pilot aboard her during the war in Vietnam. Also, during the dark days of September 11, 2001 she served as a command post.
As a soldier, I am always amazed something so big can float and then be able to launch combat planes. The book begins with her actions in WW II and describes in detail the combat the Intrepid participated in and the kamazike attacks the ship withstood. The Intrepid WW II actions are very impressive by it and that alone would make an interesting book. The Intrepid was one of the few fortunate aircraft carriers to be selected to be refit after World War II.
After the Vietnam War, the Intrepid assisted NASA by recovering astronauts from the Atlantic Ocean. Later the Navy would decommissioned her and but decided to bring her out of mothballs and recommission her for continued service. The authors Bill White and Robert Gandt go into detail about the changes to the Intrepid.
September 11, 2001 the Intrepid served as a command post for the United States Government as much of their office space was destroyed in the World Trade Center. The Intrepid to this day has a mission to support New York City in times of crisis. This is an incredible feat as this ship is over 60 years old and with the new refit by the Intrepid Foundation she will continue to welcome people aboard her decks.
One of the chapters, I found extremely interesting is how the Intrepid came to New York and became a museum. The founders gave much of their own money to preserve the Intrepid. The process of bring a war ship to a city is daunting as well as expensive. The authors make the reader really appreciate the scarf ice and vision to bring the Intrepid to New York.
I enjoyed the book and if you have time read the book and if you in New York make sure you visit the Fighting I on the Hudson River in New York City.

White has done a fine job in this book. I was a plane captain assigned to a Corsair along with one of his interviewees, Felix Novelli, also a plane captain of a Corsair. White has obviously done much research, and accurately so. His descriptions of battles with the kamikazes are quite realistic and bring back many memories, frightfully so. White cites Novelli's witnessing the attack on the Franklin. I, too, witnessed this. I was in the chow line on the port side when the attack occurred. I saw the plane and witnessed 27 explosions before turning away. I simply could not bear to watch any more. One point in the book that I question, and it is minor. But, I do have to admit that my memory of the April 16 attack is somewhat vague, but it seems that the two kamikazes attacked from on high off the starboard side rather than from low astern as White describes. I do have to admit to being very busy at this time, however, since my battle station was a 40mm quad tub on the port side just aft of the elevator where the suicider struck. I was quite busy handling ammo at that moment and 63 years have taken a toll on my memory. Nevertheless, the book is a fine representation of the "Mighty I" and what she went through while I was on board. I highly recommend this book for WWII buffs and any others interested in the history of aircraft carriers of that period.
I grew up around the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the stories and history of of the US Navys warships were an important part of my youth. One of the often told stories were about the Intrepid and its brave sailors and marines. This book highlights the long and extremely interesting and history full life of one our Navy's ships, a great read and great history for us all. PS come visit it in new York City.
I thought this was a great book It's great to read an author who knows his subject.
This fascinating story of the beloved aircraft carrier, the USS INTREPID, and the valiant men who served her so bravely is a must-read for all who would savor a true-to-life account of heroism in the service of our country. The book was written by Bill White, President of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, in collaboration with Robert Gandt, a former US Navy aircraft carrier pilot, whose inimitable style never ceases to capture the hearts and minds of his readers.

Commissioned in 1943 as Navy CV-11, the Essex Class INTREPID fought long and hard throughout the Pacific Theater of World War II before finally sailing in victory beneath the Golden Gate Bridge in 1947 to her well-deserved resting place in San Francisco. Her battles had been fierce. Many innocent lives had been sacrificed aboard the ship and in the air to the Japanese Imperial Navy and savage kamikaze attacks.

Refurbished in the mid-1950s, the Intrepid was recommissioned and returned to the high seas where she played a major role as a recovery ship for America's space program. In the 1960s, she went on to see three tours of duty in Vietnam earning many much-coveted commendations. After extensive modernization in 1972 she, once again, entered the fray and began two years of Cold War duty in the Mediterranean with multi-mission capabilities -including nuclear strike deterrence- before sailing to Quonset, Rhode Island under her own power only to be ignominiously towed to what was to have been her final resting place in Philadelphia.

Life began anew, however, when in 1982 she was resurrected and transferred by a Special Act of Congress to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City along the placid banks of the Hudson River in Manhattan. There she would also proudly serve as a temporary emergency center headquarters for the FBI following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Most recently, she has undergone extensive renovations and remains a treasured National Historic Landmark for all to visit and bask in her glorious history.

Having read the book with immense interest, the Intrepid and her museum are now at the very top of my own personal "bucket list". The book is a story well-told and much appreciated.

The first official history of the legendary aircraft carrier that fought in World War II and Vietnam and continues to serve as a major air and space museum in New York City

The USSIntrepidis a warship unlike any other. Since her launching in 1943, the 27,000-ton,Essex-class aircraft carrier has sailed into harm’s way around the globe. During World War II, she fought her way across the Pacific—Kwajalein, Truk, Peleliu, Formosa, the Philippines, Okinawa—surviving kamikaze and torpedo attacks and covering herself with glory. The famous ship endured to become a Cold War attack carrier, recovery ship for America’s first astronauts, and a three-tour combatant in Vietnam.
In a riveting narrative based on archival research and interviews with surviving crewmen, authors Bill White and Robert Gandt take us inside the war in the Pacific. We joinIntrepid’s airmen at the Battle of Leyte Gulf, in October 1944, as they gaze in awe at the apparitions beneath them: five Japanese battleships, including the dreadnoughtsYamatoandMusashi, plus a fleet of heavily armored cruisers and destroyers. The sky fills with multihued bursts of anti-aircraft fire. The flak, a Helldiver pilot would write in his action report,“was so thick you could get out and walk on it.” Half a dozenIntrepidaircraft are blown from the sky, but they sink theMusashi.A few months later, off Okinawa, theyagain meet her sister ship, the mightyYamato. In a two-hour tableau of hellfire and towering explosions,Intrepid’s warplanes help send the super-battleship and 3,000 Japanese crewmen to the bottom of the sea.

We’re next to nineteen-year-old Alonzo Swann in Gun Tub 10 aboardIntrepidas he peers over the breech of a 20-mm anti-aircraft gun. He’s heard of kamikazes, but until today he’s never seen one. Swann and his fellow gunners are among the few African Americans assigned to combat duty in the U.S. Navy of 1944. Blazing away at the diving Japanese Zero, Swann realizes with a dreadful certainty where it will strike: directly into Gun Tub 10.

The authors followIntrepid’sjourney to Vietnam.“MiG-21 high!” crackles the voice of Lt. Tony Nargi in his F-8 Crusader. It is 1968, andIntrepidis again at war. Launching from Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf, Nargi and his wingman have intercepted a flight of Russian-built supersonic fighters. Minutes later, after a swirling dogfight over North Vietnam, Nargi—andIntrepid—have added another downed enemy airplane to their credit.

Intrepid: The Epic Story of America’s Most Legendary Warshipbrings a renowned ship to life in a stirring tribute complete with the personal recollections of those who served aboard her, dramatic photographs, time lines, maps, and vivid descriptions ofIntrepid’s deadly conflicts. More than a numbers-and-dates narrative,Intrepidis the story of people—those who sailed in her, fought to keep her alive, perished in her defense—and powerfully captures the human element in this saga of American heroism.

(read the news and understand)

(Uhhh are you serious????)

(What?)
Because the surge is working. Because you don't and let all those people die, spend all that blood and treasure and then walk away without victory. Because you finish what you started.
If you want to surrender move to France, they're good at it.

This is probably the most stupid thing I have ever heard....im blown away. Like the previous reviewer said, how would that solve anything???? I am basically stunned that anyone would make something that actually stated that. It makes me sick.
you have to be kidding me. Like honestly "GIVE WAR A CHANCE?"
This society is messed up. I mean just say those words to you out loud. America is a joke to me even though I choose to live here. I mean , that's the same as saying Give Terrorism a Chance. Like that is going to solve our problems.
No the way it should be is Give Peace A chance like Lennon demended. Its been over 30 yrs and since that slogan but do we see a change? Of course not. People are too busy with their lifes and if they actually cared about their future and the future of others they would actually did something with themselves. This really pisses me off.
No its Give peace a chance you pricks.

(Death by the Busload)

(A solid San Francisco police procedural in the "Bullitt"-mode)

(Eight People Know Who The Killer Is - And They're All Dead)

(Interesting Police Procedural, Very Much Of Its Time)

(Matthau and Dern at their best)
Gritty naturalism and Altman-esque crosstalk amid great Bay City location work inform this 70s procedural that entertains but misses the mark of being a classic. The picture's overlong with a few too many red herrings. Things pick up for the climax. (Indeed, the ingenious plot could be due for a remake.)

Matthau is suitably low-key in the picture's admirably unsparing picture of the cop's home life. Lou and Bruce are along to jack up the energy.

In the 1960s the writing team of Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo wrote police procedural mysteries based on the cops of the Stockholm PD--a sort of Swedish 87th Precinct series without a vestige of wit or humor, hence the ironic title. Oh, very gloomily Scandinavian! The books were immensely successful in Europe and even managed the almost unprecedented feat of jumping the Atlantic to become best sellers in America. "The Laughing Policeman" was probably the best-known book of the lot. It is still very much in print and well worth reading today.

Inevitably the series was picked up on option by an American film studio. In 1973, "The Laughing Policeman" was filmed ... with a few changes.

Ingmar Bergman may have been widely admired but he was not box office. No US studio was going to risk big bucks on unknown Swedish actors, nossiree. Walter Matthau was hired to play the lead detective and a young Bruce Dern to play his sidekick. (It should be remembered that in those days Matthau was still an all-around actor, and a good one; his talent had not yet disappeared beneath his comic persona.) If no Swedish actors, than certainly not Stockholm, a town that was presumably gloomy and dull. (Who knew? Who cared?) San Francisco was neither. That was the place!

The movie starts out with a wordless sequence which begins at what was then called the Eastbay Terminal located at about First and Mission Streets. A miscellaneous lot of people board a small diesel bus decked out in the Municipal Railway's old green and cream color scheme that clearly bears the route designation "14 MISSION." The bus wends its way through the streets of San Francisco until one passenger uses an automatic assault rifle, called a "grease gun" in the script, to murder everybody else on the bus. The bus, no longer controlled by the now-dead driver, careens slowly through Chinatown, coming at last to a stop in a gentle crash. The mass murderer, face unshown, steps off and, so far as the puzzled detectives who soon arrive on the scene are concerned, vanishes into thin air.

(Now, to any San Franciscan, a major mystery immediately appears: what in tarnation was a 14 MISSION bus doing so far off course--in Chinatown, of all unlikely places?)

"The Laughing Policeman" was made in the era of the hugely successful Steve McQueen vehicle, "Bullitt," a police procedural set in San Francisco and almost dialogue-free. "The Laughing Policeman" is chattier, but not by much. I wouldn't be surprised to find that all the dialogue in the shooting script could be contained in under ten typewritten pages.

Like "Bullitt" and another famous San Francisco mystery movie, "Vertigo," "The Laughing Policeman" is both an homage to the City and a travelogue. In "Bullitt," San Francisco is an action-oriented theme park suitable for chases up and down the hilly streets. In "Vertigo," San Francisco is a place of picturesque monuments that mask old sins. But in "The Laughing Policeman" the cameras dote on the sleazy underbelly of the City, familiar places in the daily slog of the natives but effectively invisible to the tourists.

I lived in San Francisco for 31 years. I left it in 1973. This movie exactly captures the City as I remember it. (I visited San Francisco a couple of months ago. With the single exception of the Embarcadero Freeway, torn down after the big 1989 earthquake, hardly a brick or a hair has changed in any of the locations that appear on the screen.)

All in all, this is a pretty good, terse, well-acted film that offers a respectable story and is at once a travelogue and time capsule.

Give it a try. Five stars.

Sgt. Jake Martin is speaking to his new partner, Insp. Leo Larsen; trying to convince him how important this investigation is. Inspector Leo Larsen is leery:

"Sgt. Jake Martin SFPD: Evans was working the Teresa thing on his own time. He's killed on the same bus with Gus Niles who's looking for a grease gun that happens to be the weapon used.

Insp. Leo Larsen SFPD: And then his girlfriend winds up dead on the floor with the needle... Jake, you realize what you just did? You do it to me all the time, now you heard what the man said upstairs.

Sgt. Jake Martin SFPD: I heard him, I was up there, he's a nice man, he shoots in the low 80s, but he plays too close to the vest.

Insp. Leo Larsen SFPD: Then what are you laying all that crap on ME FOR? WHY DON'T YOU STOP IT FOR ONCE? That's YOUR personal hang-up, it does NOT happen to be mine!

Sgt. Jake Martin SFPD: Can't you see it?

Insp. Leo Larsen SFPD: I see one thing, I see why you're such a good cop, and one reason only, because you're so screwed up otherwise. You're beyond human belief, you understand that? You've got nothing else, no personal life, nothing!

Sgt. Jake Martin SFPD: All I'm asking you to do is help me tail a guy for a few days, its routine!

Insp. Leo Larsen SFPD: IT IS NOT ROUTINE JAKE, GODDAMMIT, IF THE BOSS SAYS FORGET IT!"

Nine people in San Francisco get on a bus, one leaves alive. The
living one takes with him a "greaser", some sort of sub-machine gun that he used to kill the other eight. Why? What is this all about? That is what Sgt. Martin wants to know. One of the eight is his dead partner, who was supposed to be on vacation. Jake Martin( Walter Matthau) is obsessed with this case, and will not rest until he finds the answer. Enters (Bruce Dern)Insp. Leo Larsen, his new partner. This is Leo's break, up into the big time, but his partner doesn't talk much, and it drives him crazy.

Sgt. Jack Martin is "melancholy, bordering on depression, overwhelming him because he suspects he may have lost his partner as the result of the two-year-old case he failed to resolve." Thus "The Laughing Policeman" is a play on words. This case takes us into the underground of San Francisco in the 1970's. Fuzzy, high hair, hippies, bright suits and a tamer life than we know now. The investigation is "right on", and the clues and lack of clues bring them to many stops along the way. All of the clues are looked at carefully, and all of the leads followed up. The criminal elements are all interviewed. The loves and the outlaws are interplayed with junkies and the motorcycle mamas. These detectives are real and play the part, they are depressed and worried and sometimes hate their job. Sgt.Martin has been in this business for a long time, and the unsolved case of a few years ago has now come full tilt. There is the requisite car chase in San Francisco up the hills and around the sharp corners. Walter Matthau has stepped into his second detective role, and at times it seems as if he is reaching for this character. Bruce Dern plays his character with charm and determination. The scenery is magnificent and the city comes alive. This is the beginning of the detective series that we have seen so many times on TV. "The Streets Of San Francisco" it is not, but almost as good.. Recommended. Prisrob

Two men get on a bus in early morning San Francisco. It's still dark out. One seems to be following the other, and the first man appears to be aware of it but isn't concerned. There are five other passengers, among them an old man, a young woman going to work, a Chinese-American kid. The bus picks up another passenger. This man goes to the back of the bus, and while he's seated he quietly reaches into a bag and screws on a barrel to a machine gun. Then he stands and murders everyone on the bus. The bus crashes and he walks away. This is a taut, terrific opening to a police procedural that I wish I liked more than I do.

It turns out that the man on the bus who had been following the other is a policeman. Among the cops called to the scene is Jake Martin (Walter Matthau), who was the guy's partner. Martin is shocked at the discovery. He has no idea what his partner had been doing. With a massacre on his hands, the lieutenant in charge (Anthony Zerbe) tells Leo Larsen (Bruce Dern) to work with Jake. He makes it clear he wants all stops out to find the killer. What follows is a meticulous look at dogged police work, chasing down leads, searching for connections, trying to make sense of what appears to be a senseless act. Some of those killed had crime sheets or were drug users, and this sends Martin and Larsen into San Francisco's underbelly. Finally Martin realizes that there might be a connection to a two-year-old case that he had talked to his former partner about, a connection that may have triggered his partner's interest. If this turns out to be true, then Martin and Leo have a lead to a killer.

What is so good about this movie is, among other things, the set up. The machine gun shooting is a startling opening. It raises all kinds of questions. The look into police methods keeps your attention; you see how Martin and others put the pieces together. Matthau does a fine job as Martin, close to being burned out, laconic and not too interested at first in working with Larsen, who's a bit of a wise guy. The tension between the two of them works, I think, because Matthau and Dern are both good actors. There are three excellent set pieces that are very well handled: in the morgue during the autopsies of the victims, in the emergency room where staff tries to save the one survivor, and the lead-up to the bus shooting.

Where I wish it had been better concerns the casting of the smaller parts and the direction. Too many of the actors look like actors. Much of the movie is spent turning over stones and looking at San Francisco's lowlife...pimps, prostitutes, sleazy bar managers, porno theater ticket sellers, burlesque dancers, gay bar denizens in leather or makeup. Most of them look like they're acting sleaze. If you want a taste of real life, check out Mona Lisa, where the underage prostitutes have pimples on their faces and backsides. There's none of that reality here. There also is a tendency to create emotion-charged scenes that are marred by "acting"...the kind of slightly false intensity you can see on some television cops-and-robbers series.

This is one of three crime movies Matthau made in a three year period. The others were Charley Varrick, also in 1973, and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three in 1974. This one is interesting and worth a watch. Unless you really like Matthau, I'm not sure if you'd want to buy it. Varrick, if it had a better DVD presentation, and Pelham are both, in my view, keepers. The DVD presentation for this one is not great but not too bad. There are no extras.

If you want a treat, get a copy of the book this movie was made from. Same title, The Laughing Policeman, by Maj Sjowell and Per Wahloo. The detective is Martin Beck, not Jake Martin, and the bus massacre takes place in Stockholm. It's an excellent police procedural mystery.

There is absolutely nothing funny about "The Laughing Policeman", director Stuart Rosenberg's ultra-serious, ultra-violent police procedural/character study from 1974. Actually, that it's a hard-boiled police thriller is apparent five minutes in, when a lone gunman machine guns an entire city bus full of passengers to death and disappears into thin air. Enter foul-tempered homicide detective Lt. Jake Martin (Walter Matthau), whose anger intensifies when he realizes one of the victims is his off-duty partner. He's in even less of a good mood when he's paired with affable, sympathetic new partner Leo Larsen (Bruce Dern, in a rare "straight" role). The rest of the film follows their search for the killer, which leads them into some pretty unsavory places in and around San Francisco.

"The Laughing Policeman" isn't so much a police thriller as a procedural, and a very good one at that. There is very little action, and most of the tension comes from Martin and Larsen's prickly relationship. And gay viewers may be offended by where the crime ends up, as the San Francisco gay scene is shown in an extremely negative light. That said, there's something special to be found in any movie that relies on sheer acting from its lead and supporting cast, which includes Lou Gossett and Anthony Zerbe as fellow cops and Cathy Lee Crosby and Joanna Cassidy as two women who may have clues to whodunnit. And the last fifteen minutes are absolutely hair-raisingly suspenseful.

I'll say no more about this excellent thriller except to say that the DVD is presented in an excellent color transfer and in the proper 1:85:1 aspect ratio format, unlike the unfortunately botched release of Matthau's other stellar 1974 crime thriller "Charley Varrick", which is dumped onto DVD in a fullscreen transfer. Unfortunately, the only special feature is the original theatrical trailer, which is incredibly dated like most trailers of the era.

Thrill seekers may want to look elsewhere, but those in the mood for an intelligent, atmospheric thriller may find what they're looking for in "The Laughing Policeman".

(bio dome review)
I enjoyed Pauly Shore in Son-in-Law, but I didn't enjoy him as much in this film.
Lord help me, but I thought this movie was pretty hysterical in it's stupidity. Joey Adams was as always, great. Who can resist a Baldwin in rasta rolls? Not me. Definately get this for parties. Parties where everyone is drinking too much and wanting some stupid fun. Oh, Bonus: Kylie Minogue. Come on...you can't pass that up!
I'm not a big fan of Pauly Shore but I loved this movie. It is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. There are countless ridiculous scenes that you'd have to be retarded not to laugh at, like when the scientist tells Bud and Doyle not to do anything they would do at home (and then they have the flashback about shaving the dog).

Besides being funny, the movie has really hot girls. The two main characters have really good looking girlfriends (dressed extremely trashy of course) and they meet two unbelievably hot girl scientists at the Bio-Dome (one is Australian singer Kylie Minogue)

This is definitely a movie you either hate or love. If you're into serious movies or dramas I definitely would not recommend this.

GOT THE ITEM EARLIER THEN EXPECTED. I GET THIS FOR MY NEPHEW. HE HASN'T COMPLAINED YET!
The movie, Bio Dome, is a must see. Pauly Shore and Steven Baldwin are the main actors. They play as two frat boys who get trapped in a biological bubble with 5 scientists. It is rated pg13. The movie was released in 1996.

Meet Patch Adams (Academy Award-winner Robin Williams), a doctor who doesn't look, act or think like any doctor you've met before. For Patch, humor is the best medicine, and he's willing to do just about anything to make his patients laugh - even if it means risking his own career. Based on a true story, Patch Adams combines sidesplitting humor with an inspiring story that transcends the traditional comedy.
