(EDWINS BEST YET)
(Good album)
(Edwin McCain, Lost in America is the best!!!) ...and definately not "old style" Edwin McCain. Only "Losing Tonight" is remeniscent. Seems he's trying to break out of a mold but loosing that old attraction a bit. The album and the content are both lyrically and musically superb. If I were to have a complaint it would be that the recording was pushed to, and in some cases past the point of clipping. Listener fatigue was present. Other that that, I hope this collection of great music surpassed the bands' expectations. Great job guys! this is edwins most complete record yet. every song on it is great. why this record is not all over the radio is a crime. buy it and it will not leave your player.i listen to all kinds of music-hard rock- blues- country-jazz-classic rock-classical etc. this is hands down one of the best records of the last few years. Fans will not be disappointed in this record. He remains true to his unique style and rocks a bit. This purchase was my 2nd copy as a gift for my sister. I LOVED the cd so much I want to share it with others.

customer 's review (Too Good For One Movie!)
(Great, Fun Movie)
(Funny Florida)
(honkey tonk freeway)
(Honky Tonk Freeway) This has to be one of the best comedies of all time. Just check out the list of actors in this film, not to mention the characters, and situations the portray, all of them on their way to Florida for one reason or the other, all connecting in the town of Ticlaw. They could have made a sitcom of this movie and I'm sure it would have been on the tube for years. I first watched this on HBO in the 80s, taped it, and have enjoyed it ever since. You won't be disappointed. I really enjoyed this movie. It was fun and it probably helped that my expectations were pretty low. I grew up in the town that hosted most of the downtown scenes - Mount Dora, FL (a correction to the previous reviewer indicating Fruitville was the filming location). They did film the scene of blowing up the overpass near Sarasota. Honky Tonk Freeway, for many years, held the record for losing more money than any Hollywood product in history. Having probably the worst, most ill-conceived title possible and no real star power, it was easy to overlook. The fact is, it's a funny movie. This isn't "art" and it doesn't pretent to be. But, if I have a choice of spending an evening with either Honky Tonk Freeway or Out of Africa, it's going to be the trip to Ticlaw, Florida for me. this movie is a classic to me. i have not see it since the late eighties. that is why i am pleased i found it at amazon. does not have it anywhere else that i know of... The movie is great fun to watch with my family. Parts of this film was filmed in Sarasota,FL where we live and I did work as an extra on this film. We were thrilled to find it and have a copy to enjoy again and again, and of course to go with the my keepsake Honky Tonk Freeway t-shirt, paycheck stubs and letter of thanks. (What's Essential About This?)
(Pros and Cons..)
(Love Morricone, hate this collection)
(Essential Morricone) Ennio Morricone is a true musical genius, most widely known for his work for Sergio Leone's "spaghetti westerns" but the breadth of his work is far reaching. Often incorporating twentieth century compositional techniques and challenging vocal arrangements. This collection deserves a full five stars, not the paltry and ungenerous three. Branch out into the unsettling with a true master. A sticker on the jewel case proclaims Crime and Dissonance "an absolutely essential Morriconography". A couple of listens had me wondering what is so essential about this? Unfortunately, essential is an abused term when it comes to describing music. This might be said to be essential if you are a Morricone completeist, but when you compare the quality of the music here with that of some of his other compositions, you'll find that Crime and Dissonance is rather easily dispensible. Is the music here unusual? Quite. But the question must be asked why anyone would sit around and just listen to it. This stuff belongs in a movie. Unlike many other Morricone compositions, the pieces here do not fit with any kind of mood you might have except that generated while you are watching a film. I know a lot of folks with broad musical tastes, but I don't know of anyone who would listen to this CD just for pleasure or even for background music unless one was operating a commercial haunted house or having some kind of themed party. There's too much other better Morricone music out there! I like Ennio Morricone and I am sure these pieces fit in the contexts for which they were intended, but I could have gone on quite happily without ever having heard Crime and Dissonance. Pros: Ennio Morricone was a terrific experimental composer. This music is Wierd.
Cons: Kind of wierd combination of songs.. a lot of them don't feel like they should be on the same album. It's as if they took the most obnoxious parts they could find, and memorialized them.
Morricone is the master. But this collection misrepresents his genius.
I guess the Dissonance part in the title excuses all. Crime and Dissonance is by far the best collection of Ennio Morricone's film music on the market. Primarily, because it focuses exclusively on a phase of Morricone's career that's largely been ignored (until now). This 2 disc collection contains some of Morricone's most startling, dark, spooky and adventurous music. Composed largely for obscure Italian horror movies and crime dramas, the music contained here is quite innovative for its time. Filled with almost avant jazz and psychedelic sounds, this is a great listen. The excellent tracklisting ignores chronology in favor of a thematic flow, and it works. This two disc set along with one of the many fine Morricone Western score collections is essential for any good music library. The man was far more than just a film composer, as this disc proves. Excellent. Finally, the listening public is treated to a Morricone compilation that focuses on his more daring, outre, and lesser known score music. Nothing against his better-known spaghetti western soundtrack work; there is a reason after all that stuff is so well known, because it's fantastic and wholly original. But did you know the dude scored more films than any other composer (over 500), that his discography is twice that of Sun Ra, that he made amazing psychedelia and crazy funk and subtle experimental music? Assembled by the brilliant musician/ musical curator Alan Bishop for Mike Patton's Ipecac label with liner notes by John Zorn, the aptly titledCrime and Dissonanceis culled from extremely rare releases from the early `70s. It's strange stuff, but very enjoyable and easily among the finest and most necessary reissues of the entire year.--Mike McGonigal Rerations < Crime and Dissonance >

customer 's review (not as good as the original......)
(does anyone notice the final scene??)
(SCARY MOVIE)
(And why did I want to see this film again?!)
(Why Roger...why?) not as good as the original (which wasn't very good) but has enough of blood, beasts and babes to keep you interested. Far more sillier than the original which also makes a more fun casual watch (especially with a few drinks in you). Humanoids From the Deep ok there are like 4-5 reviews on this film and being a big fan of the original corman classic i feel this film does not live up to the original.its watchable but the original has a cult status that is insane and will live on in infamy. however in all of the reviews of this classic remake i have not heard any mention of the final scene where the monsters come out of the sea and attack the fishing village during the cumminity fair was the same exact footage from the original corman classic, they just inserted a good 10-15 minutes of the original film into the remake some twenty years later.am i the only one who notices this as i had not read any other comment on this bizzare twist.??? THIS MOVIE WAS BASICALLY ABOUT SCIENTIST DOING TESTS AND THEY BACK FIRE.EMMS SAMMS WAS IN THIS MOVIE AND EVEN THOUGH I ENJOY HER MOVIES THIS ONE WAS WAY TO SCARY FOR ME.FISHMEN ATTACKING A TOWN AND MORE. MY NEPHEW ENJOYED IT BUT I DIDN'T.WHAT THEY DID TO EMMA AT THE END REALLY TURNED ME ON THIS MOVIE THAT WAS REALLY A CRUEL THING TO DO.THAT MADE ME RALLY DISLIKE THIS MOVIE. WATCH THIS MOVIE AND SEE WHAT YOU THINK. This IS the 1980 film starring Doug McClure. Now, ol' Doug was never going to win any awards for his acting, but even he outdoes himself in the bad acting department in this super cheesy film.
I remembered this film from the days when I got my first VCR. I had remembered it as being fairly well done. Boy, was I wrong! This movie BITES!
HFTD follows the same basic premise that every "seafaring" monster film has since Jaws was made: people get attacked, pets get attacked, locals get angry, loyal local takes charge to get monster, expert scientist is readily on hand to assist, more people get eaten, festival/holiday is disturbed by the monster; hero dispatches monster, and finally, the film sets us up for a sequel.
Jaws was a one time thing. Even Speilberg never thought it was going to be as popular as it was since they hadn't been able to get the shark footage that they wanted. The result was a benchmark film against which all other seafaring "monster" films are judged.
The acting is quite terrible throughout. It's not amateur hour, but you can actually see the non acting throughout (McClure's screen wife has absolutely no expression on her face when she is attacked by several of the Humanoids). The scientist who knows what's going on (Ann Turkel) is so vapid that you just want to shake her. Ann Turkel got her acting chops from the modeling runway and we all know that is sufficient (right!). She has no expression and she moves as if in a dream, delivering her lines evenly and expressionless. Hilariously when the hero, the scientist, and the honorable local (an American Indian) go to the location where the local first saw the monsters, we can tell that the location is anything BUT where he first saw it. How can this be since he saw it on his own property? However the location they identify is NOT his property!
The script is such a pitiful mess that the writer should be ashamed of himself.
The monsters (the Humanoids) are two legged fish monsters with a tail - at about 7 feet tall - they are the result of frog DNA being merged with salmon DNA and then the salmon being eaten by "the once thought extinct but isn't really" coelocanth. So where do they get their two adult legs and extra long five fingered arms (oh, that must be the frog DNA at work, since frogs are bipeds, aren't they?).
Rob Bottin created the monster costumes and while not totally stupid looking, they are quite idiotic (but that's more the director's and producer's fault than his).
Really cheesy and badly done film. Don't bother. I don't see why Roger Corman would allow one of his best, if not best of his works to get butchered like this, even when he was producing. The entire scare factor that the original had is gone, the great music is gone, the characters you could give a damn about are gone, the awesome monsters are gone, leaving this movie a VERY pale imitation of a classic 1980 monster movie.
I can understand that this was a low budget, but so was the original, and it still came out better. The original Humanoids looked much better then these here new ones, the older ones had character and a feeling of terror, these here new ones are horrid, they still have the basic design...but the feeling just is not there. The monsters awesome shreeks are gone, replaced by crappy sounding "ape" grunts.
You couldn't give a care about the characters anymore, that is the best I can say about them. The acting, even by my standards is dreaded, I guess Corman felt that the only way to possibly keep a viewer's attention is throw blood everywhere and womens' chests. When the Vietnam cnflict began, no one thought that a third world nation could stand up against the battering of the U.S. Air Force and Navy. It was the first exmple of the misplaced arrogance that would define the conduct of the U.S. in the War. And all along, downed pilots and captured soldiers sere subjected to beatings and torture at the hands of the resolute North Vietnamese. With extensive footage from the CBS news archives, Mike Wallace chronicles the failings of the American air war in Vietnam, fro the first raids to the final, massive offensive ordered by Nixon. Pilots talk about why these attacks did not work, and former P.O.W.'s including Senator John McCain share horrific tales of their time in captivity. See how the American policy of making P.O.W.'s into a major issue may have helped ent the war, and hear tapes of some P.O.W.'s broadcast "confessions" which often contained hints as to their wherabouts and situation.

(The best BET movie) I've wanted this movie for some time and I was excited that I received it shortly after I ordered it. I actually sat my 14-year-old son down to watch this movie with me, not because of all the Luvy-Duvy stuff, though the plot was very cute... ...But more because I really wanted my son to see young Black adults as successful and professional people with goals and aspirations, and the kind of life and FUN!!!! He can have when he aspires to excellence, for me this movie was a fine display of those things
I LOVE BOTH OF THESE ACTORS! THE CHEMISTRY WAS ON TARGET. THE FILM WAS DONE WELL. Kadeem Hardison and Lark Voorhies chemistry in this movie was sizzlin. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this movie. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many familiar actors in this movie. It was a good story that was very entertaining. I loved watching their relationship evolve from initially dislike to love. It was good to see Tempestt Bledsoe back on screen and I enjoyed her character Pam. This is a love story that I can watch over and over again and not grow tired. The acting is far from stellar, but it is a very cute movie. Rerations < Fire&Ice (2001) [VHS] >

(A thorough effort to cover the issue)
(Great Documentary!)
(great cause, more of this)
(See people at social action work) Effectively educational without being sentimental or sensational, this film tells the story of modern genocide and the western cultural denial of it. Kudos to Cheadle for being a voice for those whose story would otherwise still not have been told. If you are interested in international humanitarian efforts, particularly the Darfur crisis - I would say that this is a necessary addition to your research materials - more now than ever as Darfur is in greater crisis since this film was made.
Since early March 2009, a warrant was recently issued by the ICC for the arrest of Omar Al-Bashir - President of Sudan, and many humanitarian aid organizations have since been booted out of the country leaving millions on the edge of imminent danger. (see more: http://sebiart.blogspot.com/2009/03/urgent-report-on-darfur-you-too-from.html)
This dvd thoroughly covers the history of the problem in Darfur, following six different individuals around the world, and their involvement in the liberation of the civilian population. There is ample information here about the ICC (international criminal court) and their investigations into crimes against humanity. It also shows Don Cheadle and George Clooney's very earnest and active roles in attempting to bring worldwide awareness to this VERY pressing issue.
I originally rented this video and then bought it as I felt it was timeless and invaluable reference material for my library; and as documentary DVDs go - this is incredibly affordable. This is a totally different documentary about Darfur! Most are told from an interview perspective, but this documentary, from the perspectives of six different individuals from different countries and walks of life, is a great resource for anyone wanting to know more about Darfur. This highlights the cause and the people who are helping that cause of Darfur. I hope this opens people's eyes to the real problems in Sudan. Cheers for those who are out to publish truth. Darfur is one of todays often overlooked nightmares. See six people trying to do something about the problem. Hard to watch but impossible to turn away from,Darfur Nowaims to educate, illuminate, and, most of all, motivate viewers to somehow get involved in bringing the calamitous situation in that African land to an end. Some basic facts are provided at the beginning of writer-director Theodore Braun's 98-minute documentary: Located in western Sudan, Darfur, a region about the size of France with a population of six million, has been in a state of severe crisis since 2003, when non-Arabs rebelled against the Muslim government. Working in tandem with the dread Janjaweed (literally "devils on horseback") to wipe out the rebels, military forces have enacted a relentless and systematic genocide that has resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths, with millions more displaced. The film then focuses on six individuals and their roles in the conflict. Luis Moreno-Ocampo, prosecutor for the International Criminal Court, works to collect evidence to use against the Sudanese authorities; Adam Sterling, a young American enraged by the lack of world response to the crisis, campaigns in California to pass legislation to force companies with interests in Sudan to divest; Pablo Recalde of the West Darfur World Food Program strives to provide food and save lives; Ahmed Mohammad Abakar, chief sheikh at a camp for displaced persons in Darfur, tries to rally his people; Hejewa Adam, a female rebel, trains to fight the Janjaweed; and actor-author Don Cheadle uses his celebrity (as well as George Clooney's) to raise public and official awareness of the situation. (The Sudanese government is represented by its U.N. ambassador, an unctuous individual who complains that the West has "over-dramatized" the situation.) These efforts are not without their successes: Sterling gets his bill passed, Recalde's food gets distributed, and Ocampo brings charges against two Sudanese officials (a largely hollow gesture, as the government refuses to surrender them). Beautifully filmed and edited, with multiple stories taking place on several fronts,Darfur Nowplays more like a fictional drama than a documentary. But it's all too real, of course. "We must be patient until the white people come," says one of the rebels. It's a poignant, slightly pathetic statement, but unless that happens, this story will have no happy ending.--Sam Graham Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 05/27/2008 Run time: 90 minutes Rating: Nr Rerations < Darfur Now >

(A DRAMIC COMEDY)
(Patch Adams is my daily inspiration!)
(A prescription for a good movie...Patch Adams!) I really enjoy this Movie I'm glad i was able to get it. It came in good condition and there were no scratches on the disks. I didn't receive the item till after the deadline shipment date. i was supposed to receive it by the 18th and didnt get it till later. Boo I'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE BUT NEVER KNEW PATCH ADAMS WAS A REAL PERSON. ROBIN WILLIAMS PLAYS THIS ROLE BEAUTIFULLY. PERFECTLY PUTTING COMEDY AND DRAMA IN THE RIGHT PLACE For me, "Patch Adams" is the best film ever to remind us all that laughter is the best medicine. It is fresh as a squirting daisy--not a cliched or sentimental moment in the script. The scene where the little children with cancer all arrive in the courtroom wearing rubber clown noses to support Patch in his hour of need is one of the most unexpected and deeply moving things you will ever see. If you don't cry at that moment, you must not be human.
I think everybody should be more like Patch. At the auto garage where I work I've used some of Patch's techniques to liven up the atmosphere-- putting an oil funnel on top of my head, wearing a fake mustache and funny eyeglasses, cracking lots of jokes. Think about it for a minute--your car breaks down, you have to sit by the roadside all afternoon in the hot sun, the tow truck costs an arm and a leg. Aren't you going to want a little comic relief while I explain how you need to have a new transmission installed? I thought so!
"Patch Adams" is more than a movie--it's a way of life! I have fallen in love with this movie by Robin Williams. Funny moments and quite touching. He delivers an excellent performance about the life of this individual giving the joy of laughter and medicine. If you enjoy a true to life story (full of noodles and red noses), I highly recommend this! Patch Adamsraises two schools of thought: There are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics.Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful do-gooderà laGood Will HuntingandDead Poets Societyis getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest, and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development.Patch Adams, though, does provide the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end.--Jenny Brown Movie DVD Rerations < Patch Adams - Ultimate Edition >

(80's Movies Fan)
(Well made and sincere coming of age movie)
(living in bixby, ok.) This film is really kind of dumb. It shows a red neck kid in Oklahoma growing up. He seems to have more courage than sense. His is a very disfunctional life and he doesn't seem to have anything but one emotional problem after the other. I pretty much disliked the film, but for Disney it must have been an adventure in semi-realism? this movie has to be the best version of a book turned into a movie. everything that happened in the book, happened in this movie. five stars! i loved the book and i love this movie! TEX was a great Movie,I own THE DVD..A must See IF You're Matt Dillon's Fan :)
Tex is a 15 year old Oklahoma farm boy with more than his fair share of problems .He is being raised by his elder brother in the absence of parents -his mother is dead and his father simply walks away from domestic responsibility .the movie is about how this personable and engaging -but not over bright -teenager strives to make sense of his world .It examines the pains and perils of growing up and Tex 's family life is not a bed of roses .The movie treats of themes untypical of Disney productions --booze, sex, fighting ,class distinction and economic problems ,school problems and the sudden need to grow up and assume responsibility more quickly than most . This is both the appeal and the problem of the movie-it is an adult look at children's lives and treats the issues seriously ,but tries to cram too much into a brief running time .Consequently the picture feels slightly overcooked and issue heavy . Still it is splendidly acted especially by Matt Dillon as Tex and by Meg tilly as his girl friend This is awarm hearted but not a sappy movie and its honesty ,sincerity and skill commend it to me ,but a little less plot would have made it better it was such fun to go back and see how much bixby has changed in 24 years. even though a few things are still there, most are gone now, as one person said, by the flood of 1986. the university towers, the round building they go into for the drug transaction is where my jr.-sr. prom was held in 1977. it was a good feeling just to recognize thee places and bring back great memories from the old days.. Coming-of-age adventure about two teenage brothers and their struggles to grow up on their own after their mother dies and their father leaves them. Studio: Buena Vista Home Video Release Date: 06/07/2005 Starring: Matt Dillon Run time: 103 minutes Rating: Pg Director: Tim Hunter This unassuming little coming-of-age drama features Matt Dillon in the title role as a sweet, slightly dim teenager living with his older brother Mason (Jim Metzler) in a rural Oklahoma town. With an absentee father and a deceased mom, the two eke out a marginal existence; things get desperate enough for Mason to sell his and Tex's horses to have enough money for groceries. Mason is ready to graduate high school and has his sights set on Indiana University and a basketball scholarship; he has little patience for his younger brother and his antics, feeling like he has to babysit him to keep him out of trouble. Tex's partner-in-mischief is Johnny (Emilio Estevez), while Johnny's sister Jamie (Meg Tilly) is the object of Tex's crush. The two live under the stern eye of their authoritarian dad (Ben Johnson), foiling any ideas Tex may have about Jamie. If this film seems reminiscent ofThe Outsiders, it's because it's similarly based on an S.E. Hinton novel; its tone and mood also calls to mind early-'80s kid dramas such asBreaking AwayandMy Bodyguard. It's a quiet little movie, capturing the boredom and tedium of small-town life nicely, with good characterizations and early roles by the Brat Pack. Dillon helped define himself early on with troubled-teen roles, and this is a fine example.Texis also notable because it was one of the first adult dramas to come from Disney Studios.--Jerry Renshaw Rerations < Tex >

customer 's review (Sarah Palin Effect)
(The material stinks so it is unwearable) We bought this Sarah Palin mask to cover up a dummy we were using for a Breast Exam with the students.. We need a female face mask and her named appeared.
The effect didn't turn out so well, some got offended and other didn't care. Overall, the latex rubber was a bit too big. It had too much of a cartoon look. My friend said it smells like moldy balls. He meant rubber balls but it still made me laugh. But it stinks. I wouldn't give it to my dog to chew because I was afraid of what it might be made of.
Regardless, the item is not worth it. You'd be better off going with the Sash and Glasses costume if you want to be Sarah Palin. Transform to Sarah Palin with a Sarah Palin Deluxe Mask. One Size Fits Most Adults. Mask is latex. Rerations < Deluxe Sarah Palin Mask >

(Should be required reading for all NCOs and family support)
(Myth and the Human Experience)
(Finally Understand)
(Returning Veterans) This book discusses how soldiers, both in ancient Greece and in Vietnam, coped with what they'd seen and done during the war once they came home. Ingrained behaviors that once kept them alive now had no place, and civilians (even family) often denied them the emotional safety needed to express their pain and trauma so that they could come to a place of healing.
The first part of the book breaks down the various adventures in Odysseus and shows how each demonstrates an experience or coping behavior of military personal who have returned from war. (A summary version of the epic poem is provided in the appendix for those who haven't read it lately.) The author then gives examples of similar problems and coping behaviors that he's seen in his work with Vietnam veterans with severe PTSD.
The second part of the book briefly discusses several methods the author has successfully used to help restore veterans with severe PTSD to healthy, useful lives.
The last part of the book shows how the current military practices (in organization and incentives) could be changed to help prevent PTSD while also making our forces more effective as fighting units. Frankly, I was appalled to discover that some effective, life-saving military organizational practices were discarded for very petty reasons. I hope things have changed in this regard since 2002.
The author has a very different worldview than I do. He believes that war and subsequent coping behavior come from how we evolved. He also seems to believe that all religions are equally able to help veterans cope with their feelings of guilt. Because of our different worldviews, I was not entirely convinced by several of his conclusions throughout the book.
Overall, this book was interesting and easy to read. The veteran's story's were often heart-rending. This book was a valuable source of information about the struggles of Vietnam veterans, some ways these struggles can be won, and some ways PTSD can be prevented in future generations of military personal. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has served in the military during a war (though there may be better books out there for those who are actually struggling with severe PTSD) or to anyone who wants a better understanding of what Vietnam veterans went through upon their return from war.
Different Time, Different Place Book Reviews http://differenttimedifferentplace.blogspot.com/ This book is wonderful. Coming back from Iraq my girlfriend could only quietly accept my sudden anger at 'little old ladies' who got too close to me with their shopping carts in the megamall. But with her quiet acceptance on so many things changed about me, there were still small fights between us when I could not go out with her friends (who I felt were shallow and petty... Odysseus' attitude toward the rich civilians) or why I hated to drive downtown, and how our sex life was really going through the motions and so on and so forth. So many things in this book are mirrored in my own life and the lives of friends who have come back with me. So many of our behaviors and attitudes and great anger are accepted at first by friends and loved ones but they grow tired of us quickly and do not understand why we cannot change back into the people we were before the war.
Every NCO is charged with taking care of his/her men. NCOs mentor and guide the troops under their care. Read this book and talk to your troops. Read this book and talk to your families. Every deploying unit should buy this book and give it to the spouses left behind, that they can read it while the deployment lasts, that they can talk about it and be ready for the changed men and women we will be after coming back home.
We cannot entertain ourselves and distract ourselves from the fact that our troops are coming back changed. The hard-won lessons learned from world wars 1 and 2 in the care of combat stress were utterly forgotten in treating those coming back from Vietnam and a nation said 'never again'. Yet those hard won lessons on what combat stress are and how to deal with it were, again, thrown out and we are having to learn it all again. Thank you to the veterans of past wars, my heroes, who have stepped up with their stories to welcome me back and to guide me back through my own homecoming.

This book powerfully uses myth to capture the reality of the human experience. Myth helps us place our experiences, whether on the battlefield or in everyday life in context. Shay masterfully weaves ancient and modern into something that is very beautiful and very human.
Another great book about Homer's Odyssey as it relates to the adolescent experience is Rethinking Adolescence: Using Story to Navigate Life's Uncharted Years by Jay D'Ambrosio.
[...] After reading it and puzzling over it for a couple of months I can honestly say I understand what I have put my wife through for the last 36 and one-half years.
Every combat veteran needs to read this book. Just for the understanding if nothing else. Oh, if it is not too late, get some help too. As those of us who live and work with war trauma know, for many, the Vietnam War is not over.Jonathan Shay writes: "The Vietnam veterans that I have worked with were treated shabbily by both the political right - who scorned them as 'losers'...and by the political left, who held them responsible for everything vile or wrongheaded that led us into the war, was done during the war, or came after the war." I encountered a similar situation in my work with Russian veterans of their war in Afghanistan. Dr. Shay's book provides his readers with valuable insights into the challenges facing soldiers returning from a controversial war.His book is a must read for those who care about the mental and physical health and well being of our returning veterans. Anngwyn St.Just Ph.D. Director of the Arizona Center for Social Trauma and author of " Relative Balance in an Unstable World:The Search for New Models for Trauma Education and Recovery ( 2006 Carl-Auer Verlag, Heidelberg)
In this ambitious follow-up toAchilles in Vietnam,Dr. Jonathan Shay uses theOdyssey, the story of a soldier's homecoming, to illuminate the pitfalls that trap many veterans on the road back to civilian life. Seamlessly combining important psycho- logical work and brilliant literary interpretation with an impassioned plea to renovate American military institutions, Shay deepens our understanding of both the combat veteran's experience and one of the world's greatest classics. (Great and Important Story)
(Important For All To Read)
(For All Ages -)
(Wonderful) This bullying book actually looks at possible solutions to the problem and helps children think through behaviors, offering the opportunity to discuss realistic choices. This is a great lesson and beautifully written. Children of today need to know there is a difference in helping each other, when reporting or being afraid comes to mind. The lesson is clear in this book. This book is very important for all to read. It holds the key to teaching children and adults the difference in telling on someone or actually reporting a problem. It is easy reading with full meaning and will be meaningful no matter what the decade or school or premise. It should be circulated to immediate attention in all school libraries especially. This book is rated among the timeless and yet it is VERY TIMELY for this period of our lives. It is not only interesting, but it guides 'anyone' to understanding the difference in"telling"and in"reporting something to prevent harm". The author is at the top of the list for the very best of authors in Childrens' Books! This book is literally"timeless"for all ages, especially for adults as well as children. It should be placed in school and church libraries, and discussed over and over again for making certain understanding is there. The Publishers should keep this book out front for many, many years. Straightforward and simple, this story tells how one child found the courage to tell a teacher about Ray, who was being picked on and bullied by other kids in school. Faced with the fact that "nobody knows what to do" while Ray is bullied, the children sympathetic to him feel fear and confusion and can only hope that Ray will "fit in some day." Finally, after Ray misses a day of school and the bullies plot mean acts for his return, our narrator goes to a teacher. The children then invite Ray to play with them, and, with adult help, together they stand up to the bullies. (Great)
(Best translation for the Twenty-First Century.)
(Great price, great book)
(Every Conservative Lutheran should own, read, and study.) Very high quality book, very happy to add it to my library.
One oddity that I notice about this sort of book is that they come with a reading 'guide' in the preface and the guide has you starting in the middle, turning to the back, then back to the front and then back to the middle etc., why didn't they just print the book in the order that they think you should read it? :P When used as a reference book you use the table of contents to find what you want anyway. :)
Great product though, glad I bought it. This volume is packed with doctrine and answers questions that many Christians ask. It gives answers from scripture and also points out common errors of belief. It is not a book you just sit and read once, but one you will want to study for a lifetime. What is most interesting is that even though it was written in the 1500's it is very up-to-date and relevant for our time. With so much watered down, Christless Christianity in today's world, this is provides a strong and refreshing explanation of the Christian faith. Anyone wanting to understand what the Christian church has traditionally confessed should read this volume. In many ways, this edition shares a rich heritage with the Tappert and the Kolb/Wengert editions. However, the Concordia edition is far easier to read and frequently makes even the heaviest of theological concepts understandable. Next to the Bible itself, this book should be in every Christian household. This is an excellent book. It is high quality, and yet low price. If you want detailed descriptions of the traditional Lutheran beliefs, this is the book to get. In addition to the confessional documents themselves, this book is filled with notes and other helps to help you to understand the context and reasoning behind certain passages. A Lutheran, or any other Christian for that matter, would be foolish not to get this book. My Pastor recommended this book for every family. Big book and a great read. Helps you understand the why we are and what we are in being Lutheran. Really enjoying it. A big help in studing the Bible. The most comprehensive edition of the Lutheran Confessions in English. It features period woodcuts and paintings, along with helpful introductions, annotations, notes, glossaries and a variety of indices. A timeline of the period and daily reading guide are included as well. This edition is a translation based on the actual text scontained in the authoritative editions of the Book of Concord, using either the German or the Latin text, unlike other English translations which are based on reconstructed texts, but not necessarily those that are the Lutheran Church's approved texts of their confessional documents. It is designed for the reader interested in understanding in depth what the beliefs, teachings and confession of the Lutheran Church are.
