He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1981, moved to Arizona, and entered politics. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, he served two terms, and was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986, winning re-election easily in 1992, 1998, and 2004. While generally adhering to conservative principles, McCain at times has had a media reputation as a maverick for having disagreed with his party. After being investigated and largely exonerated in a political influence scandal of the 1980s as a member of the Keating Five, he made campaign finance reform one of his signature concerns, which eventually led to the passage of the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002. He is also known for his work towards restoring diplomatic relations with Vietnam in the 1990s, and for his belief that the war in Iraq should be fought to a successful conclusion. McCain has chaired the Senate Commerce Committee, has opposed spending that he considered to be pork barrel, and played a key role in alleviating a crisis over judicial nominations.McCain lost his bid for the Republican nomination in the 2000 presidential election to George W. Bush. He ran again for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, and gained enough delegates to become the party's presumptive nominee in March 2008. McCain was formally nominated at the 2008 Republican National Convention in September 2008, together with his chosen running mate from Alaska, Governor Sarah Palin. This shimmering sculpture is absolutely to attract admiring looks, showing your future president McCain in front of your house or yard day or night. It is crafted by our qualified technician, taking days to complete one. It is made of multi-colored tubing, filling with 125 bright cool white, long-lasting LEDs that consume much less electricity than regular light bulbs. This lighted display can be hung from a balcony, porch, or wall etc. UL listed for outdoor and indoor use.

(I Love This Movie)

(I'd Give it a 0 If I Could!!!)

(great movie)

(Pretty Good)

(Kids love it on D-Channel -- hard to find as rental...)
This is one of my favorite movies! It has a wonderful cast and great characters! Tyler, the mean big brother, is played by my favorite movie star, James Marsden! He has so much talent! The plot of the movie is good and there are many funny jokes! It's a great family film! Its even better when you watch it and then watch 27 Dresses! Then you see how James has gone up in his acting career! I say every family should watch this movie! It's a classic!
My family and I were expecting a good nice clasical movie but after seeing the first 9 minutes we just had to turn it of. You saw this little girl watching TV and in it was a monster that was eating people. Blood was everywhere and it was disgusting. I had to run out of the room to get a breath of fresh air. I thought that it might get better but when I came back I saw this big boy pushing his little brother around. This was not a normal boys fight, it was definetly violent. Then, my parents put a stop to it. We didn't even see the rest of the movie. I'd definetely not reccommend this movie to anyone. So, people, don't waste your money and time on this movie.
hey this is a pretty good movie i recorded this from the disney channel in about 1998 trust me dawg if i liked it yawl will like it
This movie is definitely a good kid's movie. The kids learn how to manipulate their parents to get everything they want, including getting rid of their evil big brother, Tyler. The characters are pretty well played, especially the part of the big brother, James Marsden, as Tyler. I remember I used to cringe, because he's almost too believable. He plays the evil part really well. If you're under thirteen, this movie is a very good way to fill the afternoon.
The Cochran kids have figured out how to control their parents -- even get them to send evil older brother to boarding school. Nice fantasy.

(Clicks On All Cylinders)

(A softer side of the King of horror...)

(Different opinion than others here)

(Stands By Its Reputation)

(Maybe Nostalgia Would Have Helped)
Talk about recipe for success. A story based on a Stephen King novella. Directed by Rob Reiner, who turned out to be about as fine a filmmaker there is. Narrated by Richard Dreyfuss (which is, in my humble opine, the best way to tolerate him in a movie). And solid up and coming young talents like Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix (RIP), Kiefer Sutherland, and Corey Feldman. All key ingredients to make watching STAND BY ME an unforgettable viewing experience.

A coming of age story set in 1950s rural Oregon, this film is the superbly crafted tale of four adolescents in search of a body allegedly decomposing in the woods. Yet this quest is not what the movie is about--not even close; the movie is about the four boys, their camaraderie, their insecurities and inner fears. Accordingly the story weaves, and weaves effortlessly, from lighthearted to poignant to disturbing--and back again. And it's totally believable: The viewer is on the railroad tracks in the boonies, walking with the four teens, laughing and humming to the golden oldie, 'Lollipop'.

STAND BY ME is fun, moving, sad. . .timeless. I've seen this film countless times, and will no doubt watch it countless times more. And isn't that how we honor great movies?
--D. Mikels, Author, The Reckoning

I expected something different from `Stand by Me'; that is, since it was written by Stephen King (the novella from which the film was adapted from was) I was expecting something thrilling or scary. What I got was something completely opposite yet equally engaging. Instead of a horror film or even a tense thriller, we are presented with a deeply moving story about friendship, relationships and boyhood. `Stand by Me' is a beautifully told story of adolescence; of four boys who find that central part of themselves over a weekend trek through the woods.

Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern are on the brink of their teenage years. Growing up in the 50's has not been too kind to them. Their families are rocky as is their relationships with them. Gordie, who narrates the story as an adult looking back at this chapter of his life, is conflicted at home. His older brother has recently died, and his father is so wrecked over it that he casts Gordie aside as if he were unwanted. Chris, Gordie's best friend, is treated horribly by the rest of the community because of his background (his father and brother are major trouble) and so he has become his own worst enemy because of it; downgrading himself and his own possibilities because of his conditioned mentality. Teddy has suffered bizarre abuse from his father, who is now institutionalized; and Vern, well, he's got problems of his own (weight is always an issue).

When a young boy their same age goes missing, and they get word that the body is down by the railroad tracks, the boys decide to trek out to find it and report the body. What starts out as a few friends satisfying a morbid interest turns into a coming of age story that winds up completing these four young men in ways they never imagined.

The movie is not perfect, but in parts it is grand. Some of the acting is off, but there are some amazing performances that totally make up for the few inconsistencies; and while one major part of the film didn't sit right with me (the narration annoyed me) I can see its purpose; even if I wasn't a fan.

The performances by the four young boys were all good, some great, some even superb. Corey Feldman is an annoying celebrity (now that is) but when you separate his personal Hollywood existence from this performance you can see that he did a very good job. He played the misunderstood kid, or in other words he played a normal kid, and he did it well. Jerry O'Connell also does a fine job here at being a normal (albeit overweight) kid. He's also an annoying celebrity now, but that's beside the point. Wil Wheaton was less than impressive for me, especially since this was `his' movie and I never really felt compelled to watch him, except for in some of the final more crucial scenes. He does a fine job in the end, but overall he was a little one-note. Kiefer Sutherland delivers a memorable and engaging supporting performance as Ace, the town bully; but this movie belongs to the late River Phoenix who really deserved an Oscar nomination for his dynamic portrayal of the tortured Chris Chambers. I was drawn to his every move, his every word, his every action and his character development was extraordinary.

In the end I have to recommend this movie. It could have been tightened in a few areas (I would have liked a little tension, and the removal of the narration would have been ideal) but the film is still a wonderfully fulfilling and rewarding journey through the tragedies as well as the blessings of adolescence. Sprinkled with some wonderful performances and some poignant life lessons, `Stand by Me' is one of those touching buddy flicks you just can't help but adore.

I bought this movie recently. I had never heard of it before, but it was cheap, and it sounded like something my 11 and 10 year old sons might enjoy (my husband too, since he's always been an outdoorsman).
We all sat down to watch, and first off, I was annoyed by the boys smoking. On the back cover, it said that the kids 'sneak' smokes. Well, they acted like pros at it! Not like a kid just 'giving it a try' and gagging and coughing, but they acted like it was something they always did, like it was ok. I started smoking back at that age, and I try to stress to my kids that it's NOT ok, and it's a horrible habit to kick!
Secondly, the language! OMG! I wanted to crawl in a hole with every other word being a swear word! Heck, I swear, my husband swears, and Lord knows, kids all around them swear, but we don't do it in the house, and we certainly don't want the kids doing it! It's fine to put a word in here and there, shoot, all the movies do! But I didn't think the amount used in this movie was necessary.
Then there's the gun and knife. It's not cool to cop a gun from your 'old man'! And it certainly isn't cool to point it at someone, and cock it?? OMG!! My sons have been hunting since they were 8 years old. They know what a gun is used for, and it certainly isn't used for pointing at a bully!
Anyway, I'm not a prude in any way, shape, or form, but I was hoping this movie would teach my boys that sure, life is hard, we all have issues in our lives, but we can learn and grow from our situations. We don't need to do it by 'smoking' or carrying a gun!
Sure, it had touching moments where the boys cried about issues they had, but that was it. It just showed the issues, it didn't give any clue as to where the boys could go, what they could do, or how they could better themselves. They found the body, and went home to their horrible lives...just as they did before they ventured out.
JMOP,
Dana

STAND BY ME is an amazing film that totally captures small town life, the late 1950's and more universally what it's like to be at that in between age of 12 or 13. It is incredible how much we learn about the four friends - Chris, Gordie, Teddy and Vern - in a relatively short amount of time. This can be credited to the performances of the young actors (all are excellent but River Phoenix really shines) guided by the expert direction of Rob Reiner and maybe most importantly the heartfelt source material, the novella THE BODY by Stephen King which is one of his best efforts outside of the pure horror genre.

One of the things that impressed me most about the film is the kids talk, act and think like real kids of that age still do today and probably always will. It's a shame the film is rated R because of its rough but realistic language since a lot of kids in the 12 - 16 years old age bracket could readily identify with the characters and the themes though granted this is certainly no kiddie movie for the under twelve set. But for anyone who has graduated from sixth grade or so this is a wonderful movie that shouldn't be missed.

I just sat down and watched this movie for the first time after hearing about it for as long as I can remember. And I was less than impressed.

The story follows the journey of four boys - Vern, Teddy, Chris, and Gordie (Jerry O'Connell, Corey Feldman, River Phoenix, and Wil Wheaton) as they transition from boy to man. Or at least teen. The summer before they start Jr. High, a boy their own age goes missing. When Vern hears where the boy's body is, they set out to find it so they can become heroes. While they journey, all four face fears, hopes, and disappointments whether it's the absence of parental love, a future career as a writer, or things that go bump in the night.

To be honest, I can understand why people like this movie. It has a good mix of drama and comedy. The acting is great. The film is set in a small town in the 50's, so there's the nostalgia factor.

So why didn't I like it? First and foremost, the language. That was the real biggie. It was one thing when Ace (Kiefer Sutherland), the leader of the local gang swore. It was something completely different to have these twelve year olds swearing all the time. And frankly, I have a hard time imagining kids swearing that much during the 50's. I'm probably way out in left field, but it doesn't right true. There are several gross out moments I didn't care for. Finally, the ending was depressing. I'll grant you it was realistic. But it was depressing.

I know lots of people who grew up watching this film and absolutely love it. As I said, I can see it why. And maybe if I had seen it when I was younger, I would like it now. As it is, I won't be watching it again.

A sleeper hit when released in 1986,Stand by Meis based on Stephen King's novella "The Body" (from the bookDifferent Seasons); but it's more about the joys and pains of boyhood friendship than a morbid fascination with corpses. It's about four boys ages 12 and 13 (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell) who take an overnight hike through the woods near their Oregon town to find the body of a boy who's been missing for days. Their journey includes a variety of scary adventures (including a ferocious junkyard dog, a swamp full of leeches, and a treacherous leap from a train trestle), but it's also a time for personal revelations, quiet interludes, and the raucous comradeship of best friends. Set in the 1950s, the movie indulges an overabundance of anachronistic profanity and a kind of idealistic, golden-toned nostalgia (it's told in flashback as a story written by Wheaton's character as an adult, played by Richard Dreyfuss). But it's delightfully entertaining from start to finish, thanks to the rapport among its young cast members and the timeless, universal themes of friendship, family, and the building of character and self-esteem. Kiefer Sutherland makes a memorable teenage villain, and look closely for John Cusack in a flashback scene as Wheaton's now-deceased and dearly missed brother. A genuine crowd-pleaser, this heartfelt movie led director Rob Reiner to even greater success with his next film,The Princess Bride.--Jeff Shannon

(TV Stars and Singles Bars Rare TV Movie)
Single Bars, Single Women was an 1984 TV Movie that takes on the singles scene mainly from a women's point of view. A wry sexy drama that explores close friends on the brink of womanhood who attempt to meet men at a singles bar. The action takes place at Bandini's a water hole for the lonely and broken hearted.

A great ensemble cast of TV show greats make up the regulars at Bandini's including Paul Michael Glaser ( starsky and hutch) Shelley Hack, Tony Danza ( taxi ) Christine Lahti , Emmy Award Winner Mare Winningham, Jean Smart ( frasier) and also with actor/director Keith Gordon (christine and back to school). Rick Rossovich of Top Gun fame plays one of the single men.

They all come to the bar looking for action but really wanting love. The film attempts to explore the uglier side of the bar scene but only as much as a TV teleplay will allow. The cast does a a good job of providing a full range of personalities that populate the singles bar.

Director Harry Winer uses the Dolly Parton song Single Women, and a band called The Kincaids at Bandini's for pop song covers.

(Well....)

(John McCain)

I watch this to make myself an opinion as I am an "undecided" voter.

Definitely, John McCain should be regarded as war hero. No doubt about that.

I am not so sure about is political capabilities. The president of the United States cannot be elected based on sympathy and what he endured in Vietnam.

Watching this documentary, I cannot see what change he can make to the US.

A legend for the US army, but not presidential material.

Very good description of a great man!!!! What we need in this country in this time were values and principles have deteriorated. OBAMA BIN LADIN suffers by comparison.

Let's have JOHN MCCAIN FOR PRESIDENT!!!!!

Studio: A&e Home Video Release Date: 08/05/2008
Produced and broadcast on cable television before Arizona senator John McCain announced he was a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 2008 presidential race,Biography: John McCaintold the warts-and-all story of McCain's life and political career. The familiar chapters are all here, including the struggle between McCain's destiny--as the son and grandson of elite military officers--to serve in the armed forces with distinction and his more naturally wild and devil-may-care attitude. (McCain graduated from Annapolis fifth from the bottom of his class.) The womanizing and rebellious McCain ultimately married and flew missions dropping bombs over Hanoi, the latter resulting in his five-and-a-half years as a prisoner-of-war, enduring many hardships and constant torture. The familiar newsreel footage of a shaken McCain in captivity belies the terrible conditions he withstood when the propaganda cameras weren't rolling. When that harrowing part of McCain's story finally ends,Biographyexamines in fascinating detail the ups and downs of his political life, establishing a reputation as a party maverick but taking his lumps, too, with the Keating scandal. Along the way, McCain's natural honor and impish humor always shine through. On the other hand, one does get a glimpse or two of his legendary impatience and temper, chalked up to a Vietnam experience that taught McCain not to waste time and opportunity.Biography: John McCainincludes a short coda updating the original program with facts and details about McCain's campaign for the 2008 race.--Tom Keogh

(Despite Its Flaws, An Eighties Classic)

(footloose)

(Footloose never came)

(Bacon has a stunt double.)

(veno)
After hearing that "Footloose" was being remade (just in time for its 25th anniversary; god I feel old) with Zac Effron of "High School Musical" fame in the lead role made famous by Kevin Bacon, I couldn't resist revisiting a movie that was a huge a part of my own high school years. No doubt about it, "Footloose" is a film that screams EIGHTIES, defining its era in the same way that "Saturday Night Fever" defined the disco days of the Seventies (and perhaps the way that the HSM films will be seen to define this decade in the future.) It's all here: big hair, tight sweaters, tighter jeans, legwarmers (in a brief opening montage) and super-slick Eighties pop music...it was the golden age of MTV, and in many ways, "Footloose," like "Flashdance" before it, is a glorified, movie-length music video, especially in it's tightly choreographed dance scenes. To the credit of the makers of "Footloose," they tried to give the film some dramatic heft, rather than let it become just another of the fluffy, insubstantial teen exploitation flicks of the time. The problem with that is the juxtaposition of drama and dance is so jarring at times that the movie seems to suffer from a split personality, not sure whether it wants to be a hard-hitting message movie or little more than a live-action cartoon (kids who supposedly have never danced before suddenly cutting a rug with the best of them at the prom? Please. And the type of dancing that Bacon's character seems to favor is far more artistic than you would see on the dance floors of big-city clubs, despite what he says.)

In his star-making role, Bacon plays Ren McCormick, a Chicago kid who finds himself the proverbial fish out of water when he loses his father (Death? Divorce? We're never quite told) and his mother moves the family back to her hometown, a small, rural, red-state community somewhere in the midwest. (At least that's what we're supposed to believe but the Rocky Mountains in the distance say otherwise; the film was shot in Utah.) The pastor of the local church (an excellent John Lithgow in his pre-"3rd Rock" days) wields a disproportionate amount of influence in the community--he also serves on the town council--and at his direction, the town has banned dancing. There hasn't been a prom in six years. Not surprisingly this doesn't sit well with the new arrival, so Ren sets out to change the ordinance while teaching his classmates about the forbidden thrills of dancing, and romancing the pastor's daughter, the strong-willed Ariel, who feels stifled by her family and the town. (She's also in a relationship with a local boy that is disturbingly abusive; the movie is ahead if it's time in portraying the problem of dating violence and abuse in teen relationships.) Not surprisingly Ren is quickly labeled a troublemaker and will face a variety of obstacles before he makes an impassioned speech (complete with Bible quotes) to persuade the council to overturn the ban, allowing the Senior class to have a prom and even bringing a much-needed healing to the pastor's family.

In lesser hands the dramatic content of "Footloose" could fall into maudlin TV movie territory; thanks to a talented cast of actors (including Bacon, Lithgow, Lori Singer as Ariel and an almost unrecognizable Sarah Jessica Parker in an early role as Ariel's best friend) it rises above that level and the characters have some complexity. Ren is no saint; in the name of introducing his friends to dancing, he takes them over the county line, sneaks them into a bar and manages to get in a fight. Lithgow's character is revealed as not so much a rigid moralist than a father whose unresolved anger and grief over the death of his only son (after a night of music- and dance-inspired drunken revelry) prompted the infamous ban. Indeed it is the pastor who talks some of the townsfolk out of conducting a book burning at the local library. Diane Wiest portrays the pastor's wife as a woman who secretly sympathizes with the kids, and whose meek exterior hides a spine of steel.

It will be interesting to see how "Footloose" fares as a remake; will they keep it true to the original and maintain its gritty dramatic edge (the film drew a PG rating when it came out but would likely be PG-13 today), or, given Effron's popularity, will they be tempted to turn it into another "High School Musical" type production that's all sweetness and light? Hopefully not, because in the end what makes "Footloose" appealing is its reality and humanity, not just it's dance numbers.

my boss was asking if i owned this movie and i don't so i ordered it. this one is an all time favorite movie and i'm glad to have it in my collection. thanks
It has been well over a month and I have not received "Footloose" from THMP752002 and they won't answer an email. I notice their other feedback is pitiful. Amazon should have never listed this seller.
Footloose starring Kevin Bacon made him a star and even though he is not the one dancing in the film, his charisma and acting chops makes this dancetastic movie worth a viewing or two. Lori Singer looks so much like Daryl Hannah, I can't tell them apart! John Lithgow is a riot, he knows how to make his characters memorable. Good flim for its time but pretty much dated now.
Speedy delivery to Sweden. Splendid music and intresting actors. Nice to have in my collection
Director Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) pulled a winning movie out of this almost self-consciously archetypal tale of teenage rock rebellion. Kevin Bacon stars as a hip city kid who ends up in a Bible-belt town after his parents divorce. An ill fit for a conservative community where rock is frowned upon and dancing is forbidden, Bacon's character rallies the kids and takes on the establishment. Between a good cast really embracing the drama of Dean Pitchford's screenplay, and Ross's imaginative, highly charged way of shooting the dance numbers, you can get lost in this all-ages confection, and you won't even mind Kenny Loggins's bubbly pop. Bonuses include one of John Lithgow's best performances (a bit reminiscent of Jimmy Stewart), and Christopher Penn (who sure doesn't look the same anymore) as a good-natured hick who learns to boogie.--Tom Keogh
