『We thought this would be fun popcorn entertainment for my 3 year old son. Other posters are correct, this is a really dangerous machine. Hot popcorn kernals fly everywhere (everywhere but the bowl)and you have to stand across the room to use it. 3/4th of the kernals did not pop. This is one the most disappointing purchases I have ever made. Don't buy this product! It really should be taken off the market.』

『After unpacking and reading the directions I tried my first batch. I should have had a vacuum cleaner handy for the resultant mess. Among the many crimes committed by this wretched device:

Bulky, over-sized design
Nostalgic wheels prevent bowl from getting underneath chute properly
Only half the kernels managed to pop. The rest would spray out randomly, often missing the bowl.

The company that released this travesty focused so much on the nostalgic appearance that they forgot one thing: Popping popcorn!

I reread the directions and tried popping two more batches, just to be sure. Same pathetic result. Needless to say, I promptly returned this piece of junk.』

『I got this as a gift. I'm something of a popcorn addict and I didn't have an air popper, so I was very excited about it. However, I've experienced the same problems as many other reviewers, with lots of unpopped kernels flying out of the machine and only a small portion actually popping.

I've discovered that doing what the instructions say not to do (overfilling the measuring cup a little bit) helps somewhat. I also rig a cloth napkin or dishtowel around the spout and over the top of the bowl to limit the mess. Usually about half the kernels fly out before they've popped, and a few will pop once they're in the bowl, causing any popcorn around it to fly, so it does make quite a mess without the napkin helping keep things in. One batch ends up being about half, maybe 2/3 of what you'd get from a bag of microwave popcorn. I'll buy kernels in bulk whenever possible, to get a better price since so much doesn't pop in a single batch and it's not really good after trying to pop any more than 3 times.

On the plus side, it's much faster than other air poppers I've had and doesn't need any time to warm up. The popcorn seems to stay hotter longer. And even though there's quite a bit of unpopped corn, it all winds up in the bowl instead of the bottom of the popper. I usually transfer the popped corn into a smaller bowl to save the unpopped corn for a second or third try. It is on the larger side, but I've found the shape makes it easier to store than many others. And it is really cute.』

『We started potty training with this video, and whenever things got bumpy along the way, this DVD got us back on track. It was a big motivator for my kid, and she really enjoyed it more than other Sesame street DVD's we've checked out at the library, so it was always a pleasure to put it on for her, she liked it AND it helped her potty training progress. It's especially fun I think for kids to see more about Elmo's life away from Sesame street - it shows him at home, in his room, with his Dad, (and of course in the bathroom, tastefully). Since my kid loves Elmo, that was exciting for her. It's affordably priced in my opinion, and completely worth it!』

『My daughter loves Elmo and I am very pro-Sesame Street so I thought this would be great. Not so! There is no instruction whatsoever about actual potty training except for a bit on washing hands at the end. They just dance around and talk about how great using the potty is (and that it's ok to have accidents) for 45 minutes! They also use many different words for pee and poo when what a kid needs is consistency. I think even my daughter could tell there was no content because normally she is mesmerized by Sesame Street and she really didn't care about this. Major disappointment.』

『I bought this DVD to prepare my grandchild for potty training. I had started her too soon on her training, and needed to get her more ready. She loves Elmo so I thought it would be worth a try even though I had already purchased the DVD "Go Potty Go". This was a smart move because Sesame Street has a long history of providing positive learning experiences for children, and this DVD is no exception. Elmo and his friends and family use snappy songs, and down to earth talk about a subject most of us would rather avoid. It's helpful that they explain that different people use different terms for the same thing, and that it takes practice and time to get trained. The DVD comes with a little "hint" book to help your child accomplish this milestone. A good investment.』

『This is one of the darker clay-mated films that can be enjoyed by those who relish (or don't) in this sort of genre. Adapted by the famous children's novel by Roald Dahl, the story tells of James, whose parents were killed by a mysterious rhinoceros. He lives with two cruel aunts named Spiker and Sponge, who do nothing but verbally abuse him ever since he has moved in with them. On a typical summer day, James comes a cross a stranger who gives him a bag of "crocodile tongues." These tongues are important, as the stranger tells James that these will help him find happiness. Unexpectedly, James trips and falls, sending these tongues into the roots of a peach tree. Within moments, a particular peach grows until it becomes the size of a two-story house. With the aunts making money off of this strange phenomenon, James finds himself inside the core of the peach, where insects living inside have also evolved. A centipede, grasshopper, spider, ladybug, and earthworm become his friends. What comes next is a fantastic adventure, as James and friends are on their way (through sky and water) to New York City to find happiness.

The clay-mation here is wonderful. It's almost as astounding as the animation in The Nightmare Before Christmas. There's both beauty and ugliness (when required) all around. I've read the original Dahl novel, and it was nice to see these characters brought to life (though I expected the grasshopper to be a bit different than he was in the actual film). The songs here are quite forgettable; practically none of them are very enjoyable to listen to. But there are few songs here, so they're not too distracting. And finally, keep in mind, as little kids may be frightened at some creepy images such as the rhinoceros. This is still a lovely family film to boot. I can easily recommend it to anyone.』

『The movie was cute, I had never seen it before and I purchased it because my Grandaughters are in the play at college and I wanted to see their parts, and compare the play to the movie.』

(Colorful, Inventive Dahl Adaptation)

『Here's another inventive film, based on a book by the famous author of child books, Roald Dahl, who wrote "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory."

The animation, featuring stop-action stick figures, is outstanding, as are the colors. Each character is unique, like none I've seen before in other animated flicks. Not only the characters, but how they are dressed. (i.e. long gloves and stockings on a spider). The aunts in here are a real hoot to look at, particularly the one with the pronounced teeth.

The storyline is simple and there is absolutely nothing offensive. The only warning I would give is there is a bit too much violence for very small kids and the ending is a bit silly for adults.

This is a musical, and the songs are nothing special. There are not a lot of them: five to be exact. In all, good entertainment and a good visual and audio film for a nice DVD system. Boy, I'd like to see what this looks like on Blu-Ray!』

『I am horribly skeptical and refused for the longest time in letting my two year watch this but after a friend let me borrow hers, I realized they do teach lessons in each of the shows. It's dorky and everyone makes fun of them but they do teach good life lessons. It's not that bad. 『If you have never experienced Yo Gabba Gabba you may think the creators are trip'n on acid. However put it on for your child and they will beg for more.

『LOVE, Yo Gabba Gabba! When I first saw this show I thought some stoner made this show. I thought this was the most craziest thing I ever seen in my life. But, my 15 month old daughter turn me around. She LOVES, LOVES, LOVES this show. When it comes on it she looks at us and smiles and then starts to go crazy when she sees DJ Lance walk on the screen. Her favorite song is "Hold Still". Because of this show, my 15 month old has learned certain things. She walks up to me and puts her index finger on my mouth ans say "shh". She says "Gabba Gabba", and she says "Thank You" everytime we give her something and sometimes when she gives you something. One person stated that you will find yourself singing these songs and it's true, I'm at work humming the songs all the time. This is really a good show for all.』

The DVD loops at the end so you dont have to push play again and again. We (Me) throw it in the player and leave it running all day. Buy the DVD your kid(s) will like it. The songs are catchy, and you might find yourself singing along or worse, singing them out loud while at the mall. Most people know the songs also(sad huh?) The series teaches kids to share, say please, say thank you, etc..... Bottom line is, your kid(s) will enjoy it.』

(Spots before your eyes)

『Based upon Dodie Smith's excellent novel The Hundred And One Dalmatians (see my review), this is the story of Pongo and Perdita, a married couple of Dalmatians in London, and their quest for their 15 kidnapped puppies. Though it misses quite a few of the subtleties of the book (which is why I only rate it at four stars), it's still a delightful animal film--one, indeed, of Disney's best--with a large cast of very individual creatures (and humans, such as "my old pet," songwriter Roger Radclyffe, his bride Anita, Nanny (who's "almost canine at times"), and, of course, the over-the-top Cruella deVille and her henchmen Jasper and Horace Baddun). More overtly humorous than Smith's work (doubtless as a bow to the less subtle American sense of what's funny), it's still full of laughs, action, and suspense, and is a film I rewatch regularly. Highly recommended.』

『The movie itself is very good. One problem, it takes 10 minutes to get it started (even if you are skipping forward) because of commercials. We play movies in the car, this one is impossible to start unless you want to spend extra 10 minutes on the parking lot.
Once again, the movie itself is good. We don't get to watch it often though, what a shame.
So 2 stars to Disney, 5 stars to the movie.
Could bring myself to give it 3 star rating, even though this is how I feel.』

I vaguely recalled liking the movie (and Saturday morning cartoon) as a kid and thinking Cruella was creepy, but that's really all I remembered. (Well, I also remembered Lucky was my favorite puppy, but damned if I knew why or which one he was.)

What I forgot was what made the animated feature a classic in the first place. The story revolves around Pongo and his "pet" Roger's bachelor lifestyle suddenly being changed by the arrival of two female companions. Pongo and Perdita find themselves about to have puppies, and Roger and Anita are constantly bugged by Cruella De Vil as to the price of the future pups. Not wanting to sell them to an obviously evil woman, Roger denies Cruella, and not used to being told no, Cruella devises a plan to dognap the puppies to turn them into a dalmatian puppy coat.

The rest of the film centers around Pongo, Perdita and various other dogs and animals attempting to rescue the puppies from the cruel fate. Much like the more modern Pixar movies, 101 Dalmatians was early in showing us a film focusing on a side of life that we humans don't understand or participate in: the life and culture of dogs. Each of the named dogs and animals in 101 has a distinct personality, and watching the special features with the animators explaining how they created some of these is a great way to see the level of detail that goes into designing a "kids'" movie.

Of course, while the story and characters of 101 are memorable, what really makes this stand out from a film point of view are two things. First, this is the first Disney animated feature to not be adapted from a fairy tale, and arguably the first that wasn't heavily reliant on what we now call "Disney songs." The other first was the fact that 101 is the first Disney feature to use Xerox copying for the cells and line art rather than full hand-drawn images. Disney was looking for a way to make a film cheaper, so the long-standard use of copying the images used in backgrounds and settings was created. Knowing their limits, the cartoonists did a great job of designing the world of 101 around these thick black lines, giving the film a unique look even to this day.

The special features do reveal a sad tale of Disney art director Ken Anderson in regards to this new style of cartoon. Despite the critical success and legendary status of 101 Dalmatians, Disney absolutely hated the new art style, and didn't forgive him for the "poor look" of the film until just before his death in 1993.

Despite the sobering reminder that Disney the company is far different from Disney the cartoons, 101 Dalmatians lets us forget that. With special features offering a look back at how the film was made and how Anderson and others came about pioneering the Xerox method, as well as looks at letters exchanged with the book's original author and Walt himself, it's easy to get caught up in the sheer joy that was working on 101 Dalmatians. The people behind the scenes obviously enjoyed themselves if these special features are any indication, as have the generations of children and adults watching the movie since then.

It may not be as cool to watch 101 Dalmatians as it is to play BioShock or Portal, but do yourself a favor and relive your childhood. There's a reason 101 became a classic, and will become one again for the DVD generation.

CONTENT - 5/5

Sure it's short compared to today's longer movies, but there's a reason 101 Dalmatians became a classic. It's a story people of all ages can enjoy, and you can't go wrong with the Disney features that take the emphasis off song and place it on character.

VIDEO - 3.5/5

Despite boasting new digital transfer, it's almost impossible to detect on a normal, non-HD TV. For the majority of viewers still stuck with an SDTV, it will look the same as it did when it originally came out. The art is fantastic, but you can't help but notice how dated it looks.

AUDIO - 3.5/5

Only two songs in a Disney movie!? Despite that, 101 contains one of the most well-known Disney songs of all, "Cruella De Vil." Factor that in with some great voice work (even if some dogs sound a lot worse than I remembered) and you've got some nice audio. Nothing groundbreaking in terms of today's technical performances, though.

EXTRAS - 5/5

For the art crowd out there, this is by far the most special features I've ever seen dedicated to a style of line art. It's amazing seeing the work that goes into a children's movie, and the interview clips from the people involved really paint a new light on the feature. Unfortunately we get a current music video of someone covering Cruella De Vil, so just skip that.

REPLAY - 3.5/5

If you've got kids or younger children in the house, you can watch this (and probably will have to watch this) over and over again. For those who grew up with this movie or saw it when we were young, it's a nice reminder of simpler times, but it's not something you'll want to watch regularly.

It may not be the technical mastermind today it was when it first came out, but 101 Dalmatians remains one of the few Disney classics men enjoy just as much as women. There's no princess, there's no sappy love songs, and there's no cutesy fairy tale feeling. What we have is the first of the animated movies that led to the likes of Pixar's Toy Story decades later, and a reminder of how great Disney once was.』

『Years ago I owned the full screen version of this movie on laserdisc. When the widescreen version of the movie came out on laserdisc I bought that. I decided to do an A/B comparison of the 2 and to my surprise quickly realized that the wide screen version of the movie was just the full screen version with the top and bottom blanked out, and in fact the full screen version actually had more information on it (although nothing useful, just more fore ground and background). I have never seen this on another movie, usually you see all the extra pans necessary to keep the action on the screen. I was wondering if anyone else noticed this and if there are other similar movies out there.』

(Careless travesty of a masterpiece)

『This new Blu-Ray of "North by Northwest" is actually worse than the standard DVD.
It is far too dark. Grant's face becomes uglily brown. Generally skin tones are disastrous.
furthermore the famous VistaVision high definition (equivalent to 70mm) which we should expect to excel on Blu-Ray is nowhere to be seen.
The effect is that the light charm and the beauty of the film have disappeared. It has become heavy and ugly, something it never was before.
How can those who are responsible ruin such an important film while promising to improve on DVD? The old DVD was slightly too light but it was not ugly and its definition was much as we see in the Blu-Ray. Clearly Warners have simply transfered the master of the old DVD (which was indeed good) to Blu-Ray without going back to the celluloid master (a pointless exercise if you are making a Blu-Ray from VistaVision) and then they overdid the darkening. They must put unqualified people in charge of these crucial tasks.
This travesty of a masterpiece has been produced to exploit the Christmas market. I shall stow my copy and carry on with the old standard DVD.

As you watch the title credits of Hitch's 1959 masterpiece "North By Northwest" roll up on screen in all their resplendent VistaVision Technicolor - the shiny, cold and aloof glass panelling of a New York skyscraper act as their backdrop.

It's a brilliant touch, because combined with Bernard Herrmann's staccato score it ratchets up the tension and also subliminally suggests to the viewer that some poor John Doe is about to get rightly and royally screwed by big business and big Government - or both. And of course, mistaken for a UN diplomat called George Caplin - our hapless hero George Thornhill (played by Cary Grant) - does just that.

Then when the credits end and Cary exits the lift with his secretary (Doreen Lang), all suited-n-booted and looking dapper enough to lick - another element kicks in - the picture quality...

The print is just BEAUTIFUL - featuring as it does state-of-the art frame-by-frame restoration. In fact, I raved in an Amazon UK Listmania list some 3 years ago about how good the DVD looked - well this BLU RAY is better - and at times just jaw dropping to look at.

Icing on the cake is that this 50th Anniversary BLU RAY reissue also adds on some superlative new features which are just as good as the film itself (nearly 3 hours of viewable features).

A whole bunch of things combine to make NBN work - a great story by Ernest Lehman, superb night and day locations, immaculate period clothes, the bulbous gas-guzzling cars, the art-deco buildings, the interiors of wealthy homes and the deeply luxurious dining cars of long-distance 1950's trains. And to top all of that, you get genuine old-school Hollywood star power in the form of James Mason, Martin Landau, Leo Carroll and the luminous love interest Eva Marie Saint. And of course the effortlessly suave and charming Cary Grant - arguably the best leading man Tinseltown ever produced. Throw in the tension, wit and camera angles of Hitchcock at the helm - and you're on a winner.

But your eyes keep coming back to how this BLU RAY shines. There are so many little scenes that now look sumptuous - Alfred missing the bus just at the end of the opening credits in his famous cameo scene - the garish colors of Fifties New York taxis, the marble of the Plaza hotel lobby as Cary walks through to meet clients in in the bar. Then there's the Townsend home and gardens as the villains motor up the gravel driveway to the front door, the three dapper suits of the boys as they parry in the library room inside (Mason, Landau and Grant) and the clarity of the night scene where they put a drunk Cary in a stolen car and try to drive him off a cliff. Further on there's the color of the fields in the legendary crop-duster scene, hanging off the Mount Rushmore monument by your fingernails - even Eva Saint Marie's beautiful red dress in the hotel room as she stands by the door while Cary showers in the bathroom... I could go on!

If I was to point out one genuine downside, it's the focus. Some scenes quite deliberately have Grant and Saint with an almost halo-like shine around them (soft focus to make them look better) and can at times make the print look just a teeny bit soft, but other than that the whole shebang is a joy to behold...

Up there with "The Italian Job", "Zulu", "Goldfinger", "Saturday Night, Sunday Morning", "2001" A Space Odyssey" and "The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner" in terms of top quality restoration (see my reviews for each) - "North By Northwest" is a triumph on BLU RAY. And the superb additional extras only make you feel that Warners are to be praised for a job well done...

Roll on "To Catch A Thief" on the BLU RAY format - another beautiful Hitchcock/Grant restoration currently being raved about (the "Centennial Collection" double DVD set)...』

『I am sorry to go off topic here but I could use some help. I can access all the features on the B;u-Ray disc but it refuses to play the film. I had a replacement disc shipped to me but it is the same problem. Anyone else having this problem? I have a Panasonic blu-ray disc player. Thanks for any and all assistance.

Positioned between the much heavier and more profoundly disturbingVertigo(1958) and the stark horror ofPsycho(1960),North by Northwest(1959) is Alfred Hitchcock at his most effervescent in a romantic comedy-thriller that also features one of the definitive Cary Grant performances. Which is not to say that this is just "Hitchcock Lite"; seminal Hitchcock critic Robin Wood (in his book Hitchcock's Films Revisited) makes an airtight case for this glossy MGM production as one of The Master's "unbroken series of masterpieces from Vertigo to Marnie." It's a classic Hitchcock Wrong Man scenario: Grant is Roger O. Thornhill (initials ROT), an advertising executive who is mistaken by enemy spies for a U.S. undercover agent named George Kaplan. Convinced these sinister fellows (James Mason as the boss, and Martin Landau as his henchman) are trying to kill him, Roger flees and meets a sexy Stranger on a Train (Eva Marie Saint), with whom he engages in one of the longest, most convolutedly choreographed kisses in screen history. And, of course, there are the famous set pieces: the stabbing at the United Nations, the crop-duster plane attack in the cornfield (where a pedestrian has no place to hide), and the cliffhanger finale atop the stone faces of Mount Rushmore. North by Northwestis a great-looking Blu-ray disc, with a sharpness and colors that seem like you're watching the film for the first time. New on the 50th anniversary edition are a one-hour documentary on Hitchcock's work "The Master's Touch: Hitchcock's Signature Style," and a shorter one (25 min.) specifically about the film, "North by Northwest: One for the Ages." It's packaged in one of Warner's Blu-ray books, with trivia, character profiles, and stills and vintage art. Older extras include screenwriter Ernest Lehman's commentary track, a 90-minute profile of star Cary Grant, the documentary from 2000 "Destination Hitchcock: The Making ofNorth by Northwest" hosted by Eva Marie-Saint, a music-only audio track, and theatrical trailers.--David Horiuchi
