The ensemble cast meshes perfectly--it's like a super-R-rated episode ofFriends: silly, slapstick, and completely in the viewer's face. When four pals go to Vegas to celebrate the imminent nuptials of one of them, they partake in a rooftop toast to "a night we'll never forget." But they're in for a big surprise: their celebration drinks were laced with date-rape drugs, so when they awake in their hotel room 12 hours later, not only are they hung over, but they can't remember what they did all night long. Oh, and they're missing the groom-to-be.

The film is so cheerfully raunchy, so fiercely crude, that the humor becomes as intoxicating as the mind-altering substances. The standout in the ensemble is Zach Galifianakis, who is alternately creepy and hilarious. Ed Helm (The Office), in addition to his memory, loses a tooth in uncomfortably realistic fashion, and Bradley Cooper (He's Just Not That into You) has deadpan comic timing that whips along at the speed of light. "Ma'am, you have an incredible rack," he blares to a pedestrian from the squad car the guys have "borrowed." "I should have been a [bleeping] cop," he tells himself approvingly.

Director Todd Phillips brings back his deft handling of the actors and the dude humor that worked so well inOld School, as well as the unctuous Dan Finnerty, memorable as a lounge/wedding singer in both films. But it's the nonstop volley of jokes--most cheerily politically incorrect--that grabs the audience and thrashes it around the hotel room. Just watch out for the tiger in the bathroom.--A.T. Hurley』

(What a total disappointment of a Blu-Ray! :( There should be laws against treating such a *great* movie like this!)
『This release truly was a gargantuan disappointment. "Heat" is one of my all-time favorites and Michael Mann one of my favorite directors. I actually did not have huge expectations to this first incarnation of Heat on Blu-Ray--knowing the problems that exist on both the original 1999 DVD release (which I might add was pretty ok at the time, but not by today's standards) and the subsequent 2005 "Special Edition" (which had some interesting extras and commentary, but no change to the feature itself.)

But I mean honestly, I am in awe that not only does this disc have basically _the same_ audio track (re-encoded into Dolby TrueHD)--complete with the same muffled audio which for the most part totally lacks any kind of force, and dialogue which in some places is so low it borders on being ridiculous.
I can honestly say that it had no improvement, whatsoever, over the Japanese DTS edition which was released a couple of years back (which also is far from perfect.)

Ok, granted. The audio is not 100%--that I might be able to live with. After all--this is close to being my favorite movie. However, it also has received a *minimal* upgrade on the video side.

No, I am not referring to the inherent film grain. This disc has many scenes which look like they are taken straight off the original DVD and upscaled to 1080p. The lack of detail is most prominent when pausing the movie at certain scenes. Background detail also varies strongly throughout. Yes, it is a Blu-Ray and obviously it will look better than the DVD but I have a quite respectable stack of older movies which completely puts this release in the dust. The bitrate is for the most part around 15-22Mbit/s, peaking at just under 30 in some cases; but seldom reaching this point.

Just to illustrate that minimal care has been given to the video aspect, note that it even has the _exact same_ color-change problem which occurs after Amy Brenneman's character (Eady) hangs up the phone with McCauley / De Niro (at 54:32)

While this is all bad enough, later on I actually notice that some of the dialogue has been *CUT OUT*. (Why haven't other reviewers noticed this?) Specifically where Diane Venora's character (Justine) is talking to Vincent Hanna / Pacino after the office party has ended. From the passage below, the first part ("you sift through the detritus") has been omitted(!). I actually had to rewind to verify this, as this kind of thing is pretty unusual, and not something I've noticed on any of the previous DVD versions:

You sift through the detritus, you read the terrain, you search for signs of passing, for the scent of your prey ... and then you hunt them down. That's the only thing you're committed to. The rest is the mess you leave as you pass through."

Just to make it clear--this was not some one-off problem with my disc or equipment causing it to skip ahead at that particular juncture. No drop-outs to the digital audio signal was witnessed either.

To me, cutting out dialogue (especially something as relevant and beautifully phrased) in such a fashion is completely baffling. I don't know what on earth happened to this release while it was mastered on Blu-Ray, but this just topped it all off and prompted me to eject the disc. I could not bear to see what other flaws or edits it might have been subjected to.

I might add that, never once have I not watched this movie to the end. And I have watched it probably 30 times. But this was truly an abysmal experience. Warner, are you listening? You have plenty of other awe-inspiring releases, and some which are decades older than this one which look (and some which sound) a zillion times better--Superman, North by Northwest, The Road Warrior, Bullitt, The Dirty Dozen--to name a few.

After I submit this review I will create a return request for this item. I urge all others who truly love this movie to do the same; and not put up with what is basically a repackaged&cut version of the original DVD.

What a waste of a truly great disc format.』

(The Many Flames of Heat)
『Heat offers textured characters in what otherwise would be a a "cops and robbers" movie. The networking of criminals and police is interesting in itself. Add the emotional toll taken on Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Val Kilmer, and Dennis Haysbert and their women, and the viewer sees the police and criminals as real people with real emotions. Even the coldest melt. Pacino's and DeNiro's characters meet one-on-one over coffee, and the arch-enemies reveal their mutual respect for one another--and their dedication to their craft. A classic scene.』

(My Favorite Movie !!!)
『THIS MOVIE IS VIOLENT - but, if you can get past that, you will find a truly AWESOME cynematic experience and epic performances by an all-star cast; it is an entirely new genre: it's not the traditional "cop" movie (like Lethal Weapon or Die Hard, where we instinctively root for the law), nor is it the traditional "gangster" movie (like Casino or Goodfellas, where we find ourselves sympathetic to the "bad guys"). Rather, time is split in this film, focusing almost equally on the lives of the "good" and the "bad" guys. So, who is the protagonist and who is the antagonist here? We see "good" guys sometimes doing "bad" things, and we see "bad" guys trying to do what would otherwise be considered the "right" thing. At its essence, Heat is a story about two powerful, determined men on opposite sides of the law: Neil is a career thief, who has never allowed anything/anyone into his life that he couldn't leave behind in an instant, if he felt the heat closing in; and Vincent, a driven detective, whose devotion to his job leaves him no time for his family. The film shows us how each man is the source of the other's misery - but when they collide, neither one is willing back down! An all-star cast + a "signature" Michael Mann ending = a very powerful movie!』

(BETTER IN BLURAY)
『HEAT became my favorite film after I first saw it on HBO. Although having it on DVD, I recently bought the Bluray version. While not the sharpest transfer in my collection, the 5.1 audio is superb (clear dialogue; the gunfight after the bank job, the helicopter flyby leading to the face-to-face between Neil and Vincent, and the whining and screaming jets at LAX). Overlooking a few flaws (such as Vincent grabbing a shotgun off a uniformed cop at the hotel without identifying himself), HEAT is true to life, and the covert police techniques equally apply to the intelligence game. It is hard to understand why HEAT didn't make a bigger impact when in theater release.』

(understatement is underrated)
『I firmly believe Heat is the best movie ever made. The relatable and genuine characters drive the compelling and well-paced plot. The action is fresh and breathless, and the heralded shootout at the bank heist is amazing in its violence and complexity.

As a writer myself, what I appreciate most in this movie is the sincerity of the characters and the generally understated way they go about their lives. Conversations are stripped of all excess dialogue, but they are so much richer for it. I credit the ensemble nature of the cast for most of this commendable attribute to the movie. Good supporting actors with only a few minutes of screen time, like John Voight and William Fichtner, are engaging and entirely believable. What I think makes their performances effective is that the actors understand they do not support the movie themselves. Therefore, they can pour themselves into a two-minute scene without having to worry about sustaining that kind of effort over the course of a two-hour movie.

There are many more examples of this, but I will provide three.

When the pursued crew meets up to decide whether to rob a bank, Sizemore's character Cheritto is counseled to drop out of the heist because for someone in his situation it's an unnecessary risk. Sizemore's acting in this scene alone merits an Oscar nomination, even though he only delivers three lines. The emotion on his face, though, speaks paragraphs.

In another scene, Dennis Haysbert's character Donald is propositioned to participate in the bank heist at the last minute. He's on parole and is working a crummy job at a diner, and the temptation to return to the action, the money, and the world of crime that he is familiar with is so clear in his expression. What's also clear is the expression he gives to his internal conflict: He knows what he is doing is wrong, but he acts against it on impulse. By and large, these characters have already made their moral choices and are living with the consequences with a calm resignation.

Finally, Val Kilmer's character Chris goes to his wife after the botched heist. But with a simple gesture of her hand, she waves him off, as she is being surveiled by the police. He recognizes the signal and leaves, presumably never seeing her or his son again. In a gesture, his life is completely changed. What's better, it's done entirely without dialogue.』
『Having developed his skill as a master of contemporary crime drama, writer-director Michael Mann displayed every aspect of that mastery in this intelligent, character-driven thriller from 1995, which also marked the first onscreen pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The two great actors had played father and son in the separate time periods ofThe Godfather, Part II, but this was the first film in which the pair appeared together, and although their only scene together is brief, it's the riveting fulcrum of this high-tech cops-and-robbers scenario. 『I have a craving for potato chips of all types. These were more than reasonably priced and are flavorful without being overly salty. Highly recommend them as a compliment for a lunch room.』
『In 1996 I left the financial markets and set out for the clear skies and wide-open spaces of Vermont to pursue my vision of the perfect potato chip. Four years later, I have never looked back and have never eaten better! I first started by hand-slicing small batches of fresh New England potatoes into a small French-fry cooker I borrowed from a friend with a restaurant. I experimented for months testing different oils, potatoes and seasoned toppings. My plan was simple; not to give up until I had discovered the point at which perfect flavor merged with a healthy, simple recipe. Eventually, I found that perfect recipe: Select North American potatoes cooked in pure high-monounsaturated canola oil and topped with only all natural spices, herbs and sea salt. Nothing artificial is used, ever - only simple, premium, healthful and naturally delicious ingredients go into making our chips. Life became a Madhouse from that point on! 『I picked up one of these flash drives recently at a local brick&mortar store. It was on sale for a fairly reasonable price and I wanted a digital copy of the movie. The drive itself seems to be a typical flash drive. You can click it like a pen and extend the USB connector. It is also like a pen in that the case reminds me of the plastic used in most pens. There is a notch in the base where you can loop a wrist leash onto this drive, but there isn't one provided. The drive I got was the 4GB one, which means that there is actually only 3.72GB of formatted space on the drive, and with the movie stored on the stick there is only 2.82GB of free space. Which is usually plenty of room for the stuff I tend to use a USB thumb drive for. There are instructions as to how to move the movie file to some other storage, say like your laptop hard drive, so that you can free up more space on the thumb drive but the movie will only play if it's on the flash drive. The "The Da Vinci Code" movie is the full movie, but it is presented in the full frame / pan&scan format (not wide-screen). The movie also appeared to be pretty grainy to me - but that might be because of my monitor and the settings I'm using. The movie comes with its own player software, which is very basic. You can fast-forward by using a slider control and adjust the volume.

I've got a number of flash drives - most of them are of the 4GB variety. This Sony drive isn't going to be the one that I carry around in my pocket most days. I'll probably just drop it into my laptop bag and pull it out at times to watch the movie.

『Beware that the 70-300mm lens is an old-design lens designed for a film camera that has been discontinued by Nikon. It does not contain image stabilizing "vibration reduction" technology. This is good from the price standpoint, but may surprise someone that thinks this is a kit Nikon put together. The result is you must use a tripod that would not be required for a current-design lens.』

『We were tired of the point and shoot cameras. They are slow between pics and have crappy focus. We figured...you buy cheap, you buy twice. So we got the D90 camera kit from Cameta Camera, and couldn't be happier. I can't say any more about the camera features than has been said by others, but: The video only allows 5 minutes of footage to be shot, but who really needs more than that?
If you're reading these reviews, like I did before I bought mine, remember to get a good UV lens cover, not a cheap one. If you're spending $1500 for a camera, do you really want a cheap lens cover?
I would like a date stamp on my pics, but I guess with a pro level camera you don't get that; we're just a bit old fashioned like that.
In short, if you can cough up the dough...buy the camera. Our friends saw ours and got one themselves.』

(Getting to know the Nikon D90!)
『I am a new user of the digital SLR and only familiar with the earlier film SLR's. There are some peculiarities, I am finding out, that must come with getting use to my new D90, such as the camera not allowing you to take a picture when you know there is plenty of room left on the 16GB card. When asking a dealer about this peculiarity I was told that the camera has a buffer and when it is full and sending pictures to the SD card, the shutter will not work!? At any rate, I get a message that shows "err" and that particular error message is not discussed in the "Error Message" section of my User Manual?

I have been able to work through the error messages and get a picture eventually but it wasn't the picture I wanted to take. My current assumption is that I need to continue reading the manual and learning more about the Nikon D90.

With my MacBook Pro, it was literally just plug in, choose the Seagate as my backup device, and relax. (It's better to have all devices plugged in before you power up your laptop - it instantly recognizes new devices that way.)

Did a little research and Seagate has the highest reliability rating. So far it's been working great. It doesn't get any easier.』

『My external HDDs in use now total 4, and I wanted a sleek vertical form factor so that I could line them all up in a small space under the desk where they will be cool, protected and out of the way. The soft white glow from under the base and from the Seagate logo bathes one of the darkest places in the house with convenient and aesthetic walkway lighting when the computer is turned off or the drives are in use. Silent for practical purposes, I've not yet known them to overheat. The rest is speed, which is constrained by the cable standard in use, and reliability. As to the latter, all I can say is "so far so good" after about 6 weeks.』

『The Seagate FreeAgent Hard Drive for Mac is easy to set up and get running with Time Machine. Backup is automatic and you don't have to think about it. Moving or copying files to the hard drive was also easy.

However, for a product that is supposedly compatible with a Mac, the hard drive disconnects when my iMac goes to sleep. When coming out of sleep mode, the iMac gives an error message that the hard drive has disconnected. I emailed Seagate about this issue, and after several rounds of emails with multiple people, their "mac expert" said that the problem has something to do with the firewire connection. The Seagate person said it was an issue with Apple and the operating system, and that the hard drive was fine. If that is the case, then the drive is not fully compatible with the iMac. I've dealt with this issue by using sleep mode less frequently, and hoping that my files are getting backed up most of the time.』

『This film does a good job of depicting the story of The Jackson family's life. I could watch it over and over and not tire of it. I think you would like this movie even if you are not a Michael Jackson or The Jacksons fan. It is a love story and the story of a family rising from rags to riches and all the hardships of both worlds. It makes you hurt for the family members while at the same time cheering them on. All in all it is a very good story. I hope this review helps.』

『The miniseriesThe Jacksons: An American Dreambegins in the 1940s, when Joseph Jackson (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs) and Katherine (Angela Bassett) meet and fall in love, and ends in the 1980s, when their sons reunite for the 1983 Victory Tour that brought them back together as the Jacksons. 『The DVD is just fine. However, I gave this product 2 stars because I bought it specifically because it lists Spanish under the language, as well as English. I am trying to teach my daughter Spanish, and I chose this DVD specifically for that reason. There is no Spanish language version on this DVD. So, if you are considering it for that reason, then do not buy it. Otherwise, it is a fine Sesame Street video.』

The street heaves a collective sigh pavementward when word comes down that the countdown is strictly a numbers gig, no music involved. 『This is a hilarious movie, it literally takes you places you didn't think you'd ever go - it is that good. Tom Selleck is even more handsome (if that is possible) without the famous 'tache, I cannot believe how good that man looks even with all the added on medical scaffolding in the movie. One part that had me doubled up was the part in the ambulance where Tom (already well banged up and bruised from various other scrapes) is making sure he has all of his toes, fingers, ears, eyes,&well, you'll just have to watch the movie ... it's a scene that you know he has to get round to counting those particular parts of his anatomy and when he does it's so-o- funny.

Don Ameche is classic as always and so are the rest of this well observed cast, it is really good to enjoy the laughs, spills, humour and mayhem caused by the old parents, the bitchy sister and bratty children. See it please, you must if you value your sense of humour, it is a classic.』

(God I Miss Hal Ashby)
『Although this is Ashby's first directorial effort, you can already see many of the themes and recurrent fascinations of the man in this early work. The spare framing, the comfortableness with silences that would later emerge so brilliantly and patiently in Being There, and of course the offbeat and quirky performances, bringing to life characters that are wholly formed yet wildly funny and almost never otherwise shown on screen.

I also found the "European" edits (i.e., abrupt and sometimes surreal) to be creative, and of course the performances by many great character actors were superb. In particular Lee Grant stands out, who was nominated for an Oscar for this performance. Her drunk scene at the tenement is a hoot. Also look for a very young, very clueless Robert Klein.

This one is a treasure, a slightly skewed and definitely overlooked classic and in my view an estimable addition to the Ashby catalogue. Watch this one with the original Out-of-Towners and you will have a pretty nice two-fer. a slice of New York that is long gone.』

『I searched for years after seeing this movie when it was first released, but it didn't seem to be available on VHS. I was very pleased to find a copy - in great condition. Beau Bridges and Pearl Bailey are terrific in this tale of a rich white boy's foray into the black culture of the late 60's/early 70's - the impact of the tenants in the building he buys in a black neighborhood (just beginning to be gentrified) and his on their lives (his involvement with a female tenant who's husband is in jail). But I think the best part of the movie may be Lee Grant's performance as his mother. Underrated as an actress who I believe was mainly known on tv, she hits a perfect note as a spoiled white woman who can't quite remember which of her many beaus she actually married (after a night of drinking with Pearl Bailey). Some hard truths about the gap - culturally and economically - between black and white are played out very well here and the love story is quite touching. Terrific movie that has aged well.』

『I discovered this film by accident while reading a black cinema history book by Donald Bogle. I was fascinated by the movie once I saw it. It's become one of my favorites. This is an art house film about a wealthy white man who becomes a landlord of a Brooklyn tenament and makes connections with two very different black women. I love the boldness and complexity of the film and the directing was dreamy and odd--making it a surreal visual experience. I was captivated, as usual, by the spectacular performance of the late, great superior Diana Sands, who died too soon: I think she would have been one of Hollywood's biggest black actresses had she lived. She is mesmerizing in this film. I definitely recommend this movie to anyone interested in movies that explore race relations and the complexities of human relationships.』

Although Hal Ashby, first-time director, and Gordon Willis, almost as new to feature cinematography, deserve the highest praise for their contributions, I split the lion's share of credit for the film's success between Bill Gunn's biting, hilarious script and the perfectly cast ensemble:

Beau Bridges is deceptively nuanced in a deceptively tough role: Elgar Enders, an unmarked, unformed trust-funder whose scheme of renovating a tenement house into a groovy bachelor pad is his trial by fire waiting to happen. His relentless lessons in humility would be exhausting if they weren't leavened with (dark) humor. Had Bridges chewed some scenery, he might have garnered an Oscar. As it is, he opts for a bewildered spontaneity that sure looks like great acting to me.

Elgar's mother Joyce (Lee Grant) and Marge (Pearl Bailey), a tenant in Elgar's building, have a lengthy, hilarious scene over bottle after bottle of fortified wine that would be a comic touchstone if only more people knew about the movie. Observes Marge: "You can get at those hamhocks a little better if you take those gloves off, honey."

Diana Sands as Fanny Copee is flat out hilarious when the script calls for it (Broadly pouting, having sussed what a light touch Elgar is: "Complaints? Well let's see... The roof leaks, the oven door's broke, the toilet runs all day, and you're awful cute to be a landlord..."), equally wrenching when the script calls for that. Marki Bey offers a lived-in performance as Lanie, another of Elgar's romantic intrigues: Lanie is sad, serious, but not despairing. Watch the "Spinal Meningitis Festival Ball" scene closely- she's given almost no dialogue, but her reactions supply all the eloquence required: joy, apprehension, tenderness.

Lou Gossett is first seen embodying The White Man's nightmare version of The Urban Black Male, but it's a put-on. Still, the film plumbs the pain behind the role-playing, and finally it's clear that the pain is bottomless: ("D-don't let them transplant my heart til I'm dead," he pleads, his mind finally snapped). Mel Stewart is the droll, menacing Prof. Dubois, another of Elgar's tenants, who would despise Elgar if such a feeling weren't beneath him. Stingingly aloof as he is, the professor delivers the jab to Elgar's conscience that helps end the film on a hopeful note.

『I can't believe they haven't released this on DVD! I don't usually go for "generic holiday" stuff, but good old Bear manages to be profoundly true to the spirit (and spirituality) of Christmas even when he's scrupulously calling it "the winter holidays." The message for young children is that Christmas (or whatever you celebrate) isn't about getting presents; it's about showing love and kindness to others. The young animals in the Blue House learn this lesson when their argument about opening presents is interrupted by the howls of a homeless dog. They welcome him in and, with the help of the magical Winter Berry, help him find a home. I think my 3-year-old got the message on his own level: after watching the video a couple of times, he responded eagerly when I suggested we put some money in the Salvation Army kettle for people who have lost their homes. Later he said he wanted to be a builder and build homes for people who don't have any. It's difficult to communicate concepts like charity and social justice to small kids, but I think the Bear managed it nobly, without ceasing for a second to be fun and endearing. Three cheers for the Bear and the Winter Berry!』

『I have to agree that this is a great, great video for kids to help them learn about all the winter holidays. My kids have both been watching it since it first aired on the Disney Channel and I have to admit that it's now one of my favorite holiday videos, too. However, I have to agree that the VHS quality is very poor. We are now on our second tape, which I bought about a year ago, and the picture quality is noticably poorer than when we received it and we've only watched it 5 or 6 times. I would dearly love to see this come out on DVD so my kids don't lose an excellent (and informative!) video. So, 5 stars for Berry Bear Christmas, but 3 for video quality.』

(Great Holiday Special, VHS Presentation Leaves Something to be Desired)
『"Bear in the Big Blue House" is a wonderful holiday special featuring your favorite friends at the Big Blue House, some returning guests and a brand-new character. In this special, "A Berry Bear Christmas," Bear and his friends celebrate Christmas, but also examine Hanukah and Kwanzaa. They also participate in Bear's favorite winter tradition --- the search for the winterberry and learn about the true spirit of the holidays.

Things start out with everyone wanting to be involved in the decorating and everyone wanting lots of presents. But then they hear a howl and take in an old dog called Jack who doesn't have a home. They vow to give him his best holiday celebration ever and learn that there's more about the holidays than just presents and such. Some may feel that this is PC nonsense, but like anything else in the Big Blue House, this issue is handled with sensitivity and class. They really did a great job.

This special is packed with wonderful holiday songs of all types. "That's All I Want for Christmas" is an over-the-top hoot, in which "Santa Hogg" is piled with the children's Christmas wishes --- all the way up to a hundred trillion clams for Pip and Pop. On the very opposite end is "What If?" in which Tutter speculates what it would be like if he and his friends didn't have the Big Blue House to live in.

My main complaint with this production is how it's packaged and the quality of the tape. Things seem well enough, with Hi-Fi sound and close-captioning. There are also previews in the beginning for "The Trumpet and the Swan," "Dragon Tales" (on VHS and DVD) and other "Bear in the Big Blue House" VHS releases. But this release is recorded in SLP mode, rather than SP, which really degrades the quality, especially upon repeat viewings. Additionally, there is editing --- this was originally a two-part special aired with two separate end-credit sequences and it's been edited into one continuous special. Finally, this video contains the standard "Bear in the Big Blue House" VHS boilerplate about "Each show also includes the following songs: Welcome to the Blue House and Goodbye Song." However, "Welcome to the Blue House" is not in this special, as it's replaced in favor of the holiday opening --- "A Berry Bear Christmas." The "Goodbye Song" is only performed once, at the very end, due to the editing.

I gave this four stars. It's really more like three-and-a-half and I could have easily chosen three, but I'm in a holiday mood.』

(Great Video, Terrible Quality...)
『We just purchased this one for our Bear-loving kids, and it's typical GREAT Bear quality in content. I'm sure we'll watch it again and again (and again). But I had to come online and check out the reviews here. Our VHS tape is extremely poor quality! My husband immediately asked if something was wrong with the TV--because the colors looked muted. But it's the tape. Grainy picture, washed-out colors. It looks like these were mass-produced the worst way--it reminds one of a bootleg tape, actually!

Forgive me for reviewing the picture quality instead of the content, but I thought other buyers would like to know before they purchase. I doubt the kids will care, and now that I see that other buyers have had this problem, we won't be taking it back to the store. But honestly, I wish they had a DVD of this one! They may soon, and when they do, we'll be replacing this VHS pronto.』

Throw in some unnecessary and unrealistic car crashes and you have a mess of a movie.

(Great Thriller That Goes Slightly Off-Course...)
『2009 marks the fourth time critically acclaimed actor Denzel Washington has teamed-up with director Tony Scott for a film. The previous three movies were outstanding crowd pleasers, from the intense character driven drama of "Crimson Tide", to the action-packed thrill-ride of "Man on Fire", followed by the surprisingly enjoyable time-jumping actioner "Déjà Vu". With such extremely entertaining movies being produced from this actor/director combination, I had no reason to doubt that I would enjoy their fourth collaboration, the remake of "The Taking of Pelham 123".

"The Taking of Pelham 123" begins for subway dispatcher Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) much like any other normal day; however, as Walter soon discovers this day will be far from normal. When a violent group of criminals, led by a seriously deranged man named Ryder (John Travolta), takes control of one of New York City's subway cars, Garber gets stuck in the middle of a deadly game where lives can be lost with one wrong move. What started as just another day has now become a race against time to meet a madman's ransom before innocent lives may be lost.

Well, I must admit, this movie really surprised me in a couple of ways, and not necessarily for the best. For starters, it was a much smaller, more intimate character drama than I had anticipated from the previews. I knew that it would be a thriller, so the intensity would obviously be ratcheted way up, but I didn't foresee how narrow the majority of the movie's focus would be. Now, that's not a complaint implying that most of the movie was too small; on the contrary, I enjoyed that director Tony Scott moved away from the widespread action and mayhem that had permeated so many of his more recent movies (also not a complaint). Sometimes it's just nice to see a director who is known for a certain type of movie, take a step back and deliver something outside of their perceived comfort zone. Generally, when this happens the results can be quite refreshing and intriguing, to say the least.

However, my second surprise came from the fact that despite being thoroughly entertained by the story for roughly 95% of the movie's duration (as expected), the film's confounding climax derailed the movie slightly, just before reaching its final destination. The tightly paced screenplay from writer Brian Helgeland ("Man on Fire") was rife with tension, suspense, and drama; all of which provided the perfect recipe for an intriguing character drama, as I stated above. Yet, within the film's conclusion and for that matter even during a few scenes prior, it becomes slightly overblown and ultimately perplexing. What makes this a problem for me is the fact that when this occurs this once taut thrill ride begins to resemble just another action film (complete with an overdone crash sequence and an unrealistic chase scene) that doesn't feel like it fits in with the rest of the movie.

What caused this problem to occur in this movie? I believe this is one of those instances where the director couldn't leave well enough alone, and just had to include a big, and altogether unnecessary, action scene to complete his vision. I'm putting the blame mostly on director Tony Scott for this lack of judgment, although to be fair I'm sure these trouble spots were included in Helgeland's screenplay (perhaps at the behest of Scott, who knows). Whatever the cause, Tony Scott knows how to make great movies, and should have known better than to hinder a potentially great thriller with needless action movie set pieces.

Despite the complaint I just finished leveling at director Tony Scott, I do feel that he was a very solid choice for helming this movie. His hyper-kinetic visual style is perfectly suited to the kind of fast-paced thriller that Brian Helgeland's script demanded. Thankfully, Tony chose not to include all the washed out colors, pops of bright white across the screen, and various other camera filters and tricks that have been so heavily used in some of his recent work (i.e. "Man on Fire"). Even though I enjoyed the movies where Tony used what he calls his "shooting on acid" style, it was beginning to become somewhat distracting for me as the viewer, especially in his film "Domino".

Tony's more straight-forward approach to filming (which is reminiscent of his work on "Enemy of the State"), meaning without all the weird filters and such, is far less jarring. That's not to say that this film's camera work is completely static and boring. After all, we are talking about Tony Scott, so as one would expect the movie is chock full of quick cuts, almost constant camera movement, and even some moments of slow-motion, freeze frames, and fast-forwards. One thing is for sure, if you're going to watch a Tony Scott film, you're almost always guaranteed to be in for a visually interesting experience.

One area where the film definitely comes through is in the casting of the two lead characters. In the role of the story's protagonist, as anyone who has seen the preview should have deduced, is audience favorite Denzel Washington, taking over the role previously portrayed by screen legend Walter Matthau in the 1974 original. Denzel plays Walter Garber, a man beaten down by a thankless job, who is struggling to survive in a world that waits for no one. It's a part that could have been played with far less believability by some actors of Denzel's stature, but as always Denzel delivers yet another solid performance. Unlike some of his past roles, Walter is a far less confident man than what some have come to expect Denzel to portray. While Walter may not exude authority and command the respect that other Denzel characters have before; there is a quiet strength inherent in the character that connects with the audience and fills Garber with a steely resolve to see this ordeal through to its conclusion.

The other lead actor in this film is the ever-reliable John Travolta ("Face/Off"), in yet another scene stealing villainous role. As the lead hijacker, Ryder, Travolta proves once again why he is generally a perfect choice for a cinematic villain. One moment he will be extremely charismatic and almost likeable, but in a split-second he will simply snap, becoming completely unhinged and unpredictable. So many actors struggle to break a good guy image once it's been solidified in the public's mindset; however, Travolta is one of the rare examples in which he has been able to successfully transition back and forth between good and evil roles without issue. Some critics argue that John's villains tend to feel over-exaggerated due to some over-acting on his part. I tend to disagree with this sentiment, at least in this instance ("Battlefield Earth" on the other hand...). I think some critics perhaps mistake this character's almost bi-polar personality for over-acting, when in reality it is simply a drastic shift in his character's emotional composition. In my humble opinion, I believe John Travolta delivered another top-notch villainous performance that audiences will love to hate.

In the supporting roles are some very talented, and always dependable actors such as, John Turturro ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen"), James Gandolfini (TV's "The Sopranos"), and Luis Guzman ("The Count of Monte Cristo"). John Turturro is given a much more serious, no-nonsense role this time around as opposed to the off-kilter, eccentric character he's more recently been associated with in the two "Transformers" movies. With John's character he could have easily remained very cold and one-dimensional; instead, he played him as a very empathetic man who loves his job and always wants to do what's right, not just what's convenient for those in power. With that conviction there is also a clear sense that Turturro's character feels somewhat betrayed by the job and perhaps even by the city he protects. It's a surprisingly more conflicted role than one would expect, and not surprisingly John handles it all with great ease.

I mentioned a moment ago that James Gandolfini and Luis Guzman were two of the other supporting cast members, but unlike John Turturro their roles were far less interesting. Truthfully, I can't for the life of me understand why the casting director chose to waste two very good actors on essentially throwaway roles. As the mayor of New York City, James Gandolfini appears bored and unenthusiastic, but who can blame him when the role is so bland and generic. As for Luis Guzman, this terrific character actor is placed in a bit part as one of Travolta's henchmen; however, he's given so little to do within the story that you can't help but wonder why he even signed on for this movie.

Perhaps it was the opportunity to get to work with Denzel Washington, John Travolta or director Tony Scott that drove those two actors to participate in thankless roles. Whatever the case may be, it is too bad more couldn't have been done to make their characters more interesting or important to the overall story.

"The Taking of Pelham 123" has all the makings of an incredibly relentless thrill ride, but some ill-fated decisions in the latter moments of the movie slightly derailed my enjoyment of the experience. All things considered, "Pelham" is still an entertaining movie, it's just got some problems that cause it to stumble to conclusion rather than roll along smoothly.

(The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 DVD Review)
『In my opinion, this remake of The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 doesn't even come close to the original excellent 1974 film, which was directed by Joseph Sargent. The new version is tedious, boring, with a lot of vulgar dialogs, and pretentious acting. Luis Guzman, who is one of my favorite character actors, is totally wasted in this film. The musical score is inappropriate and doesn't match the action scenes at all. Note that at the end of the film, a police officer gives Denzel Washington a Walther PPK pistol for his protection, which he puts in his coat pocket. Later on when Denzel Washington pulls out the pistol, it is totally a different handgun.』

(Fails On Almost Every Level)
『By and large, the types of films that Denzel Washington sticks his name on provide viewers with incredible acting, great character development, and a plot that sucks you in and makes you really care about what is going on. Unfortunately, "The Taking of Pelham 123" does absolutely none of those things.

Acting: The film focuses on Washington's "good guy" (a New York subway line coordinator) matching wits with John Travolta's "bad guy" (who hijacks a subway car in exchange for a large ransom). However, neither of them are able to act anywhere near their full potential. Whereas Denzel is at his best when his passions/convictions get the best of him, in this movie he is not once allowed to emote wildly. Instead, he turns in a ho-hum performance where he stays cool, calm, and in control the entire time. While that may have been the character that was written on the page, it didn't suit Washington at all and thus should have been cast differently. As for Travolta, he is too busy dropping F-bombs and maniacally raving to really be allowed any sort of acting maneuvering. His character is the same from the first time that we see him until the last.

Plot: Though hyped up to be an incredible, fast-paced film, the plot really is no different than anything that has been done a thousand times before. Crime, hostages, ransom, banter, rescue attempt. That's all it really boiled down to, and those same themes were covered in much more riveting fashion in mere minutes of, say, "The Siege" (another, much better, Washington film).

Character Development: This area was easily the biggest weakness of the film. Though it seems as if, in the beginning, the film is moving towards some interesting developments for both the Washington and Travolta characters, the "revelations" come and go in seconds and are never touched upon again. It's as if the writers had some good ideas in mind, but never really got everything ironed out.

Also odd was the strange dialogues throughout the film. At times, in the middle of what should have been a tense hostage crisis, Washington (or his co-workers/superiors) were often seen laughing or joking with each other in a fashion that didn't at all seem to fit the tense mood of the film. I kept expecting the tension to pick up as the minutes ticked by, but before I knew it the movie was over and it seemed as if nothing substantial had happened.

Thus, despite my liking of most films starring Denzel Washington, I would have to steer other viewers clear of this one. The plot is shallow, the acting isn't anywhere near fully realized, and the character development/dialogues are just plain stupid or non-existent. I have not seen the original version of "Pelham", but I'm willing to bet that this remake didn't live up to it.』
『John Godey's 1973 novelThe Taking of Pelham One Two Threeboasts a suspense situation so surefire that even the directorial bad habits of Tony Scott can't ruin this latest movie version. Four armed men seize a New York City subway train, isolate one car, and threaten to start killing passengers if a ransom isn't paid within the hour. The ransom was a million dollars in the book and also in Joseph Sargent's solid 1974 movie, in which Robert Shaw played the mercenary leading the hostage takers and Walter Matthau was the growling transit cop trying to outsmart him. In 2009, the title has gone digital--The Taking of Pelham 123--and inflation has jumped the asking price to $10 million. Where Shaw's menace was steely, John Travolta opts for manic, and shamelessly has a blast in the master villain role. His adversary, cagily underplayed by Denzel Washington, has been upgraded in civil-service rank but also demoted on suspicion of taking a bribe. This colors the dynamics of the dialogue between Washington at his control-center console and Travolta on the motorman's microphone aboard the stalled train.

So far, so reasonably good. But the director's trademark tactics keep getting between, well, everything. From the get-go, the visuals are subjected to pointless and irritating stutter effects, speeding-up/slowing-down, gratuitous camera movement, and the interposition of dirt- or light-smeared panes of glass between the camera and people we'd appreciate a clear look at. The 1974 movie settled for one police car being wrecked as the ransom is rushed uptown; Scott requires multiple collisions, each the occasion for police cruisers taking Lethal Weapon-style flight. The hostages in the earlier film were wittily individuated, a multicultural group portrait of the city at that mid-'70s moment; the ones on Scott's train--and also Travolta's fellow perpetrators, including that wonderful character actor Luis Guzmán--barely register. On the upside, John Turturro and James Gandolfini shine as two guys who (like the actors themselves) are very good at their jobs—respectively playing a hostage negotiator and His Honor, the mayor. The screenplay by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential,Mystic River) strives intelligently, if formulaically, to add new dimensions to the main characters and to offer its own gloss on the current economic meltdown.--Richard T. Jameson

『Overall, I'm not impressed with the quality of this costume. So, I will attempt to give you the details that aren't described here by Amazon, so that you can make a more informed decision as to whether or not to purchase this costume.

The fabric is thin, and the details are simply printed on the fabric. There are no embellishments, no padding in the chest ("muscles"). It is a one-piece jumpsuit. For those who live in cold climates, consider that your child will need to wear something under it to be comfortable in the evening, because the fabric is so thin.

As for the size, I'd say it's pretty "true." I got a 4-6 (small) for my son who typically wears a 5. It's a very good fit, with enough room to fit sweats underneath.

The mask is flimsy, as others have mentioned. One reviewer said that it's translucent. True, you can see through it, but only dark/light (like seeing through a foggy shower door). Your child will need to rely on the eye slits to truly see where he/she is going. I question how well my son can see out of it, since he would put it up to walk around the house when he tried it on.

All that said, my son loves it! If your child is like mine, he/she will wear the costume often, just for dress up. If this describes your child, it's worth the money.

If this isn't your child (ie: it's a Halloween-only costume), my opinion is that it's kind of a lot to spend, considering the cheap quality of this particular version of the costume.

『Ravage is just plain awesome!!! What a toy! His cat mode is both G1 accurate yet it has that scary viscous side that the new movie line figures are known for. He is honestly my favorite deluxe of the "Revenge of the Fallen" line and currently sits on my display shelf with his buddy Generation one Soundwave.』

(Soundwave's Kitty.....Movie version)
『As all Transformers G1 fans know..when Soundwave needs some recon work to be done..he usually calls on Ravage.

Now with Transformers: Revenge of the fallen, we get to see Michael bay's take on Everybodys favorite Decepticon Kitty. its a interesting look ...it has that alien quality that the films are going for, but with the G1 series Influence.

Hasbro/takara's version is spot on to the movie version. Ravage has snapping jaws (love those!) pretty good poseability, and has his trademark hip mounted weapons. the tail is poseable to a degree also.

his re-entry mode is interesting, but for me the alien panther/jaguar mode is the tops .

if you have purchased the movie Soundwave...you should pick up his counterpart..ravage.

i would have liked them to have him growl (cmon its ravage after all) but that would have probably made him more expensive i guess.

over all The Movie version of ravage figure is a great buy.

hes sort of hard to find..i was on my lunch hour and went to wal-mart where they were stocking the shelves..and i got the last one..i found out that some cases dont even have him...if you see this bad little kitty..pounce on him!

(super cute vehicle mode, not so for the robots)
『I bought this just because of the vehicle mode. If you like ice cream trucks, you can't miss this one. The robots, however, are not so good.
Skids (from the front part of the vehicle) has very tiny legs and have some problem balancing, and is smaller than Mudflap.
Both robots are very flimsy, but they are using some good plastics so I do not expect them to break any time soon. The transformation is among the most frustrating ones I've ever had among my transformers collection, and I have quite a bit.』

It should have been voyager size. The vehicle mode is really cool; kids will get a kick out of it. The transform is pretty difficult; my boyfriend has been transforming things for 20 years, and he had trouble with it.』

『This is a really enjoyable book for the literary reading crowd. It's a little bit of Catcher in the Rye with some 80's Easton Ellis flavor. The only down-side to the book is it's length. It is certainly not the "weighty-tome" that Hank Moody describes giving "man-birth to" in the series. Outside of that, a great read!』
