There is enough action to keep children and teens interested, as well as some creepy bits, and plenty of thoughtful issues to chew on as well. 『Living in the US makes catching Doctor Who episodes something of a hit-or-miss ordeal, so I finally broke down and bought the DVDs. They are well packaged, the episode guides are well thought out, and the image quality is great! No issues with messed up discs; I bought S1-S4 when I ordered and out of 23 discs, only 2 had minor scratches and play without issue.

Highly recommended for anyone who likes Sci-Fi; esp. those with kids. My niece and I have spent many an hour watching Doctor Who together laughing and it's a great way to spend a little time together in this crazy busy world with some quality entertainment.

『Series three maintains mostly strong writing, great acting, and the usual social commentary while just avoiding earning the sanctimonious and preachy mantle. It showcases the new companion, Martha Jones. Davies and Co. took the Rose / Doctor story as far as it could go without savaging Doctor Who tradition with a mismatched romance.

Martha is smart without being overbearing and caring without being effusive. Others called her "weak", but the number of times the Doctor had to count on her to save him were too many to detail here. Her enthusiasm, intelligence and understandable obsession with unraveling and perhaps healing this Doctor's secret pain is played out in a thoroughly likable character. Freema Agyeman had the challenge of portraying the first nonwhite regular companion and replacing a very popular companion who had a very strong storyline. She has an artistic range, depth and charisma to match David Tennant and Billie Piper. I hope those who can't appreciate her obvious talent learn to broaden their viewpoint.

Uneven writing throughout the season was the trouble, but with more highs than not: Lows - Martha's unrequited feelings get real old real fast. Highs - Tennant is great as the Doctor, throwing himself into the role with joy, skill and passion.

"Gridlock," was one of my favorites episodes. The idea of living one's life in a car resonates very deeply with me (I drive for a living)! And Cats were redeemed in this return to New new new etc... York. The hymn sung at the end was quite moving.

The Daleks' return was a pointless two-parter. Nothing new offered except one plot twist that works into season 4's story arc.

"Human Nature" and "Fanily of Blood" were only okay for me, It was a bit too much of a paean to our "demi-god" Time Lord, especially at the end when he exacts vengeance on The Family. John Smith was such a product of his time, he became too dense, annoying and narrow-minded to be tolerable for long. I really couldn't wait for that fob watch to open. The performances all around were excellent, but it was too much Masterpiece Theatre and not enough Doctor.

While "Blink" was a nice break from the usual, it did get caught up in its own hipness and smartness at times.

The Highlight was the three-part season finale. For those who found it "implausible", I'd ask, how many Doctor Who stories are actually "plausible"? Doctor Who has always been long on Camp and imagination, but short on Science! A good story with actors chewing scenery (both John Simm and Derek Jacobi are outstanding), is the whole point! The tension holds up right until the end. There are some minor plot holes and strained moments, but it was totally satisfying overall. And John Barrowman's return as Captain Jack was priceless!

Also: The Doctor Who Confidential episodes (Bonus Disk) are lacking. The full versions are badly needed. Please, can someone get these on DVD in their entirety?』

『The writing of the first two episodes was not up to most of the series past episodes;the series get better as it move along. Dylan Walsh's characters recovery after losing all that blood is a bit far fetch; and his wheel chair addiction seem too irrational for him. Julian McMahon is getting a bit on to be exposing so much skin, beside we've seen it too often. Matt and Kmber need better material, the writers just aren't giving them enough to work with...repetiton, repetition.』

『I bought these for our office and they are extremely tasty. Their only drawback is price. Even with the sale I got them on, they cost nearly twice as much as the "normal" brands for half as much product. However, they are still quick to be bought by the staff because they taste so darn good.

If they would only make 2 oz. bags for the same price!

One last thought: I live in the Rocky Mountains and the shipping went over the passes in Colorado. Some of the bags lost their air and became vacuum packed as they came back down. The chips were OK, but the bags looked like they had nearly nothing in them! This is the case for many air packed and sealed items I buy East of the Rockies.』

『As far back as I can remember, Andy Capp Fries have been amongst the most delicious things known to man. Whether it was any of the classic flavors; cheddar, BBQ, HOT... they were all amazing... even if they sometimes cut the roof and sides of your mouth when you ate them.
I figured the Andy Capp Fries company was balancing on threads in the past ten years or so (is there even an Andy Capp comic strip anymore?)but then I saw these Andy Capp Steak Fries, and I was blown away. WOW! They are the size of real fries! And they have some insanely awesome flavors, like these, the Hot Chili Cheese. It's like someone took all three of my favorite Capp Fries flavors, and mixed them into one flavor explosion! These new Steak Fries make a worthy substitue for regular fries. In fact, they are part of this Gator feast: Two packs of White Castle brand Cheeseburgers, One bag of Andy Capp brand Hot Chili Cheese Steak Fries, and three or four bottles of Miller High Life. Life is good, and I'm sure that Andy Capp would approve.』

『I looked at many disc cleaners and their reviews before deciding to purchase this one, and I was not disappointed.

One of the main things that makes this one fantastic is the direction of cleaning. The design allows for the direction of the cleaning strokes to go from the inside of the CD out towards the edge instead of around the disc, which is the recommended way of cleaning discs from disc manufacturers.

The cleaning fluid smells like regular rubbing alcohol, so it would be cheap to refill the little spray bottle. Alcohol is great at dissolving grease and smudges (like from fingerprints) and also evaporates quickly so the disc comes out dry or almost dry.

Putting dirty discs in your CD and DVD players can cause the optical reader to get dirty faster and shorten the life of your player (or at least the lens, for those who repair rather than replace). Most of the movies I watch are checked out from the local public library, and I can definitely tell the difference in playing quality (even for lightly scratched discs) since I've started using the Scotch Disc Cleaner.』

『I got this item because the one I had prior to it ( I believe same kind) broke and the other scotch disc cleaner I tried to get was out or for some reason couldn't be sent anyways it is a good product for the price is works on removing fingerprints and grime but can sometimes leave a film that picks up more lint and things, but not to bad if just using the provided cleaner, only if you add a cleaner that supposively protect/help prevent skipping. The one that I had before broke apart not sure what happened, it is made of plastic so when it broke (primarily the hinge) it shattered around the break spot.』

『This toy was bought as part of a collection. It comes full assembled and ready to go as soon as you add batteries. This would be a great addition to any collection or fun for a child to play with.』

(Not a Diamond Select but not bad either....)
『Being an owner of several Diamond Select Star Trek ships, I bought the playmates Movie version to add to my collection. I was expecting something less than Diamond Select ship, but upon opening the box, I was very surprised.
While it is not as polished as a Diamond(forgive the pun!), it was made with care to most detail from the movie. The decals are bold and close to accurate to the movie. The white and blue lights are vibrant, and blink correspondingly to the four phases from the movie, (a bit more than my TWOK Enterprise!) The voice chip is clearer that my TWOK Enterprise too.
Now the gripes...
While the exposed seams are pretty tight, some people I know who bought this said otherwise, so I can guess that this isn't uniform. The exposed screws on the underside of the saucer section was a bit unpleasing. They could have gone with glue or screw caps instead. The second battery compartment that isn't quite flush with the underside of the saucer section. Shaving the inside down with an Xact-o knife got it pretty flush. I would have expected more than the four movie phrases.
Aside from the gripes, it wasn't a bad addition to my collection. Now I hope playmates isn't going to release a battle damaged one like Diamond Select does. :)』

(Definatly needs improvments)
『Got this item Monday. Some parts of this item does not look like the ship from the movie. A few of the lights show through the plastic and there is extra lights being shown on the Nacells which should not be there. Also you can see the screws along the Saucer section. I got a NCC-1701 Refit model that looks more accurate then this thing. For any buyers, I suggest you wait for a AMT or Polar Lights Model to come out if they do make one and if they do, if you prefer it have lights, definatly wait for that. This thing is pretty much like the Refit Enterprise. A few different movie quotes and different light patterns. Would love to get a 1/350 Scale with lights you can have on at night.』

『I have always wanted a TOS original Enterprise, but this one (from Star Trek XI) is actually a blast to have. All lights work and function as they should. However, the voices could use a litte work (they sounded as if they where microphoned). And the scaling too, could use a litte tweak. Despite these factors, this new Enterprise will fit in nicely with the Diamond Select starships, and is, at leat, of a decent quality. Overall, I recommend this ship, and it will be a beauty when displayed on your desktop on on the shelf.』

『Our two year old daughter recently discovered The Wiggles (Going Bananas and You Make Me Feel Like Dancing being her favorites), so when I saw this was being released I pre-ordered without even knowing what it was. Well, here's what it is: a concert taping of The Wiggles performing in Sydney. Needless to say, our daughter loved it. The songs, the dancing, and she also got quite a kick out of watching the kids dancing in the audience.

I think the performance goes on a little long, and I think the camerawork could have been improved. But heck, I enjoyed it too. The songs from The Wiggles are simple, catchy, and easy to remember. That means I can sing and dance along with my little girl, and a good time is had by all. It was fun to see the parents in the audience singing along as well. Well done, Wiggles...well done!』

『My daughter has enjoyed watching all the Baby Einstein DVDs since she was an infant. I wasn't sure this would do the trick, but I was wrong. I bought this a few weeks ago. She's now 20 months, and she watches the video the whole way through and loves to name all the animals. There's also a setting for older kids to describe what the animals are doing...Sheep running, etc. She watches this a few times a week and never tires of it.』

『I love this special, mostly because it has some great songs in it. It's meant for kids, and it's good for kids, but it's not limited to kids. No matter what age someone is, I believe they can appreciate this great work of art. Adults can go beneath the surface and find deeper meaning in the message sent out. For instance, Albert doesn't believe anything he can't see. His father tells him, "You don't know as much as you think you do because you only think with your head." Then he sings a song about the beautiful things in the world you can't see or touch. This short film shows how important it is to consult your heart in life and it sends out a very hopeful and entertaining message. It makes you aware that miracles ARE possible, but you need to be at least a little active to get them going. Even when Santa bypasses the town because of doubters, there are those in the town that refuse to give up hope and do whatever it takes to bring Santa back. It's inspiring. There are just so many great things to ponder in this short little song-filled Christmas film.』

『Animators of all things Christmas, Arthur Rankin Jr. and Jules Bass (Frosty the Snowman) take on the famous poem by Clement Moore. Narrated by Joel Grey, the story opens on the night before Christmas, but the reading of the poem must be stopped when two creatures in the house begin to stir: family men Mr. Trundle and Father Mouse. Their restlessness stems from the fact that Santa is angry at the residents of Junctionville, returning all their letters without even opening them. The reason? Somebody wrote a letter to the editor of the paper saying that he doesn't exist. In an attempt to fix the situation, Mr. Trundle, a clockmaker, comes up with a plan to lure Santa into town with a clock that will sing an enchanting song at midnight. When the clock doesn't work on its first test, the townsfolk lose all faith in him. 『I explored the BD-live feature for the first time last night, and most of the functions require registration on Disney's site. On Disney's site an FAQ asserts that those features are being discontinued, and account creation is no longer possible. WTH? This disc was only released 8 months ago, and the much-heralded BD-Live features that personalize your disc and experience are already outdated.

For what it's worth, I just bought UP (released last week), and the BD-Live features from Disney appear to be nothing but downloading trailers for other films ... four of them. My verdict on Disney BD-Live =>total waste of time.』

『I watched this with my 12 year old daughter. Overall, this is a good purchase, especially for younger kids.

Pros:
- The movie has great graphics and sound. This is not all that unusual these days; the movie was created with all computer graphics. I thought they did a great job with the backgrounds and animation.
- The overall message of the movie was good and shows the right values to children. The film teaches honesty and friendship, and does a good job here.

Cons
- The plot was a bit predictable, but that is not really a deficit with this sort of film; one expect it (and one is not disappointed).
- There is a simply dreadful poem read by the narrator at the beginning of the film. Along with this, I found the words to the music to be very trite and amateurish. I think that Disney should be able to come up with better stuff in this area. This sort of text is supposed to help the movie - but I found it to hinder the film. It was just that bad. I suppose younger kids wouldn't have problems with it, but my 12 year old was grimacing. I realize it is a production for children, but the words and music should be high quality.

Conclusion:
Buy it for your under-ten-year-old. This is not a Disney classic by any means.

『Disney is at it again wooing our young impressionable minds with its tale of enchanment and wonder.
The first Tinkerbell movie hinted at what might be a nice franchise with pixie hollow taking center stage, the storyline was kind of outshined by the HD animation however. This time Tink is off on her own adventure filled with personal growth and lessons in friendship and family. The CG animation is excellent overall and the cast is full of standout voice work. The running time is a bit short, but an engaging tale is told for young and old alike. My under2 year old daughter was held rapt by the visuals and my 8 year old son had a great time with the humour and action. Disney has started to put a second DVD disc in with its Blurays and I applaud this as 2 copies are better than one and Digital copies are more of a pain than anything. If you like The Littles or the Borrowers then you will find this trip with the fairies enjoyable as the is some inventive detail along the way.
Great family entertainment that stays true to the "DISNEY MAGIC".』

(A good story for kids about friendship)
『"Tinker bell and the lost treasure" arrives as s a follow up to 2008's Tinker Bell (BD Live) [Blu-ray] and it follows the same structure as it predecessor, a story for kids (especially girls for obvious reasons) about friendship. Without getting into many details, this 80 min movie tells the story of Tinker Bell being in charge of a very important item to the whole community of Pixie Hollow: the moonstone, when it is accidentally shattered, Tinker bell must go on a quest to make things right in time before the sacred ceremony where the moonstone would be used. If you have kids, or if you are familiar with this kind of movies, you know what to expect, the heroin goes in a journey where she will face dangers and meet new friends; I am not saying that in a bad way but the opposite, my kid loved this film, the colors, the music, it has the Disney signature all over it.

The Bluray presentation is well worth the money, presented in an aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and in 1080p, colors come to life, the detail and clarity on the computer graphics look simply beautiful and the effects shine on an HDTV set. While kids may not even care about the HD details, young people familiar with the format and HD enthusiast will not be disappointed with the transfer, Disney, as usual, does not fail to deliver.

Audio options include an English 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio track, French and Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital. Subtitles included are also English, French and Spanish. There isn't much to say about the audio, while presented in HD, this movie does not really have any sequences that takse full advantage of an HD audio track, sound is quite decent and clear, but don't go expecting anything impressive (I know I wasn't)

A nice addition to the release (as with other Disney releases) is the inclusion of a standard DVD copy of the movie, the DVD is enhanced for widescreen TV's and includes subtitles in English, French and Spanish. Audio options are the same as in the BD only that for obvious reason there is no HD track but a 5.1 Dolby Digital instead. This is great as I don't think I'll be watching the BD too often, instead I can have my kid watch as may times as desired in our DVD player .

Tinkerbell gladly rises to the challenge, accepting her dust-keeper friend Terrence's offers of help, but as the days fly rapidly by, pressure begins to build and Tinkerbell becomes annoyed by Terrence's constant attention. Sending Terrence away on an errand seems like a good idea, but what he brings back inadvertently causes the almost finished scepter and the incredibly rare moonstone to break into pieces. Tinkerbell lashes out at Terrence and then departs alone on a desperate quest to fix the moonstone. What Tinkerbell learns on her journey is that she must take responsibility for her own actions and that the power and value of true friendship is much greater than she'd ever imagined. Like the firstTinkerbell, the colors and clarity of animation are simply breathtaking in this production, but the story lags somewhat thanks to a lengthy set up and a general lack of suspense in the first half of the film. Still, it's a perfectly entertaining movie that will delight children ages 3 and up as well as satisfy most parents. 『This is an awesome book. I think that it really shows how love can truly change a person. These children had all experienced so much heartache and devastation. I really admire Mrs. Gruewell for her dedication and love she showed the teens. Her willingness to not give up enabled these children to shake loose the shackles of their past and became successful. I believe everyone should truly read this book. It gives people a better look at the lives of today's teens, especially the lives of those from "the hood". It also lets people know that they do have a chance to succeed and that they can overcome any obstacle placed in front of them no matter where they may be from.』

(A Must for Anyone Working With Teens)

As a retired teacher and social worker, who worked with at-risk preschoolers I found this book very moving. As I read the diary entries I could picture the diarists as children that I worked with who had grown to teenagers and had had no one to keep them following the path they started as a preschooler. I was moved by the changes these teens made after becoming a member of the Freedom Writers and by just the simple fact that they were still alive despite their family lives, their neighborhoods, drugs,alcohol,poverty and the lack of inspiration and encouragement offered by so many of their teachers throughout their school years. How different so many at-risk children's of United States lives would be if the Ms. Gruwells of the world was the norm for teachers instead of the exception! I remember being a first time teacher. I thought I had done a good job. Now I wish that I had done more with those children who needed more than a day at school but rather a "family-like" figure who would listen, challenge, inspire and find ways to really make a difference in their lives.

I really like how these teens looked outside themselves and could see the similarity between the pain and intolerance they faced and that of Anne Frank and Zlata Filipovie. To have such global insight at such a young age is remarkable.

I wish that the author of each entry could have some sort of identification so the reader could have followed the growth of the teen.....or maybe each entry was written by a separate teen?! [Although I think that several were written by the same person as the story line of some entries seemed to follow one person's life]. At times the comments of these teens were "So self-absorbed and teen-like". With the lives they were living what a joy it was to see that a little candle of just being a teenager was able to thrive.

(Starts out fuzzy but wins you over)
『This is one of those inspiring teacher books. And like most of these inspiring teacher books it's a little heavy on the moralizing and light on the actual hard work involved. The great teachers are like the great writers, painters and athletes because they have so much natural talent that they can't really explain how they do most of what they do. There's a lot of hard work but there's also natural ability.

And this one has a distinction of being the story of a teacher who is an unrepetant liberal. Most of these hardcore inspiring teacher books seem to have a rightwing bias in which the teacher is a Joe Clark like crazy DISCIPLINARIAN who makes them knuckle under like it's a boot camp before they can learn. She's more the kind of teacher that becomes an example of what not to do when teaching. As in the story of "that Americorp volunteer who stupidly gave his address to his students and two of them tried to rob him and killed him."

But there's a terrific earnestness going through this book that trumps one's natural cynicism. Erin Gruwell could be an idealist because she was new and she was also very stubborn in her idealism. And the fact of the matter is that she succeeds because she did respect her students and she cared about their welfare. Eventually she wore them down.

But the main thing that makes this book decent is that it's about the students. Yes, there is some definite editing in the book. The first editing process is choosing what to put in and what to keep out. The diary entries are put up against each other in order to tell a story. Obviously the early entries are a little too polished to be believable as 9th grade journal entries, but Jim Carroll edited The Basketball Diaries and that didn't make them any less "authentic". They were just polished up before publication.

The main point of the diaries is that there are a lot of intelligent articulate people in crappy situations who are marginalized by their situations. Some can overcome their social limitations but most can't - not on their own at least. To expand on that theme, these writers overcame their situations because they had someone who believed in them and respected them. Everyone needs that; but for some it's a very rare commodity.』

(Lack of authenticity ruined it for me)
『Like many other reviewers, I was looking forward to this book as an inspirational read and was disillusioned on page one. The journal entries are clearly not written by youth, especially those with negative attitudes toward learning. I'm really sorry that people might believe such a polished journal entry would come from an angry teenager on the first day of school. I was further saddened to see that all the journal entries were written with the same voice. Finally, if you're going to edit the heck out of something, then leave out all of the "I love Ms. Gruwell". BS.』

(Writing can change lives)
『Do you think you could ever be the teacher of a handful of students that don't know what the Holocaust is, but have been shot at, at least once? Read The Freedom Writers Diary to learn about the hard and challenging life these teens went through and how they resisted any kind of instruction. One teacher, Mrs. Gruwell, tries to change all that. The Freedom Writers Diary, taking place from 1994 to 1998, is all diary entries from the real students at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California. Mrs. Gruwell, the brave teacher who taught these students everything they know, worked hard to change the reputations of the kids and the way they think about themselves.

In the beginning of the story, you can tell by the entries that the teens in the class don't think very much of themselves and don't respect Mrs. Gruwell and the way she teaches. The students think she's just another teacher who thinks she knows what it's like to grow up in the ghetto but really has no idea. They think she doesn't care about them. By the end of the book, you can tell Mrs. Gruwell really does care for the class and everyone in it by what the students are writing. You wish you were there, witnessing the improvements every single teen made as they change their lives, the lives around them, and the world.

This book, filled with real entries, is hard to put down. You want to know what every teen's perspective on a given situation is. Whenever something intense happens, which is often, being in a big ghetto in California, the teens react in different ways. You can experience through what they write, how the girls and boys change their outlook on life and everyone around them.

Anyone who likes to read about the real world and the ups and downs of life will love this book. This book is different, in that it's real entries from real teens, working to better themselves and their reputations. This is the real deal.

The Author writing of style is to entertain, funny, gross. The main characters are Tom, Bill, Jim, Alan. My favorite characters are Bill because he made a bet to tom to eat 20 worms before two weeks and he did do that he eats 20 worms in one week.
The background information is that they get the worms out of the grown and other places. My exciting in the beginning is when Jim ate the first worm he ate his face turn green it is gross.
I recommend this book to people that like the funny, entertain, and gross. I like this because it is funny that so many ways I will tell you first he had to eat 20 weeks but he eat it in one week.

『As I read Schlink's novel, it was nearly impossible to believe it was not a memoir. It was also nearly impossible to put down. I started reading the book yesterday morning, and for the entire day I took it everywhere with me. I read it in waiting rooms, traffic jams, while the potatoes were boiling. And at the end of the day, I picked it up knowing that I would not sleep until I had come to the end.

The honesty with which Schlink approaches the inherited guilt of the "second generation" of Germans, those who were born either during or just after the war, was truly remarkable. While the book is ostensibly about the love affair between a young man and a former concentration camp guard, it is really a showcase for all of the moral, ethical and personal dilemmas faced by these alienated post-war Germans. Schlink tackles the problem of inherited guilt with a clarity of vision that is startling in its depth. At one point Michael asks the plaintive question: "..we of the second generation were silenced by revulsion, shame and guilt--was that all there was to it now?" (p 104). That silence--manifested in the numbness which was shared by both the victims and their persecutors,as well as by Michael himself--was symbolically and materially represented by Hannah's illiteracy.

Illiteracy, the inability to read and write, was Hanna's downfall. But in a deeper sense, Hanna's illiteracy represents the unwillingness to become self-educated, to make the independent, informed decisions that all Germans faced under the Nazis. Indeed, Hanna's "illiteracy" is something we all share. The Milgram experiments, originally intended to discover what it was about Germans that made them so cooperative with Nazi outrages, demonstrated beyond the shadow of a doubt that most people, anywhere, will cooperate with atrocities. (I would strongly encourage anyone who believes the Germans were somehow "different" to read up on the Milgram experiments.)

Eventually the silence of complicity is overcome by Hanna herself, when she finally cures herself of illiteracy. When Michael discovers the literature of the Holocaust in Hanna's cell--Primo Levi, Elie Wiesel, Hannah Arendt--he begins to weep. That scene represents one of the most moving and significant statements of faith in humanity that I have ever encountered: We can all overcome our complicity. We can all overcome our ignorance. We can all overcome our silence.』

(Not Much Salvageable)
『The Reader is not a book I would ever have chosen to read. The only reason I took it up was because two of my Spanish teacher colleagues had asked me, a German teacher, to give my opinion about the ending, since they had each come away with a different interpretation. (MAJOR SPOILERS COMING!) So I read the book as a favor to them, having absolutely no idea in advance what the story was about.
For the first third of the book the review I was planning was negative. It seemed to me basically a sex book dressed up in literary pretentiousness. The novel takes place in West Germany (the Heidelberg area), starting in 1959 and spans a period of over 30 years. The story is told from the viewpoint of the main character, Michael Berg, and opens with his seduction as a fifteen-year-old high school student by streetcar conductor Hanna, a woman whose name he doesn't even know and who is in her thirties. On the one hand the relationship borders on morally repugnant. Had the roles been reversed--had a thirty-year-old-man seduced a fifteen-year-old girl and the first third of the book been devoted to a frank description of their sexual relationship--the novel may never have gotten published in America. But realistically, the author is male and what he has written is a fantasy that most young men have had; and our culture seems to find that acceptable. On the other hand, the relationship between Michael and Hanna is a destructive one. Both are using the other strictly for their own pleasure. Or at least for their own interests. But not out of a regard for the other, and certainly not out of love, even though young Michael mistakes his lustful infatuation for love and mistakes Hanna's attentions for love.
The interesting twist in Michael and Hanna's otherwise twisted relationship is their post-coital activity. Michael, on a college preparatory track, begins reading Hanna the books he's required to read for school. They are classics of German and European literature: Emilia Galotti, Kabala und Liebe, Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts, War and Peace, The Odyssey. It's true that the reason Michael reads aloud to Hanna at all forms an integral part of the story's plot, and it's not even clear to Michael until he is much older what it meant that he read aloud to her. However, I felt the choice of novels mentioned was intended to lend this part of the story a literary veneer, and I can't help but believing that the reader would be better off skipping this book and reading the works alluded to themselves.
It isn't until the novel's second act that the plot really takes off. Michael, now an aimless law student, attends the trial of several women who had been guards at a concentration camp during the war. The women are accused of being responsible for the deaths of a group of Jewish women on a death march while fleeing the advance of Allied forces at the end of the war. Michael is shocked to recognize Hanna among the defendants. She had disappeared mysteriously after their relationship was about a year old, and Michael had had no contact with her since. Adding to Michael's confusion at seeing his former lover on trial for Nazi war crimes is Hanna's bizarre, belligerent, seemingly inexplicable behavior in the courtroom.
It wasn't until the late 1960s that Germany began seriously coming to terms with the twelve year period of National Socialist rule--not just coming to terms with the crimes committed by the Nazi regime but also with the actions of the adult populace at large during that period of time. This introspection was lead by the children of those adults and corresponded with the student protest movement of the late 60s, which was very much a reaction against the existing authority structures in society. Therefore the introspection took the form of a condemnatory stance against most of the previous generation, which was held--by its actions or by its silence--to be complicit with the evils perpetrated by the Nazis. They tended to blame everyone in their parents' generation out of horror at the sheer magnitude and inhumanity of the crimes. It was this same reaction among the British and Americans that led to the retributive leveling of Dresden during the waning weeks of the war. Michael's struggle to reconcile the woman who had treated him at times so tenderly with the woman accused of leading the others in the brutal death of helpless prisoners mirrors the struggle of his generation.
The nature of the writing improved as the novel progressed. The young Michael posed a myriad of questions which he didn't bother to try and answer, and at first I understood this as a pretentious attempt at art. I don't find the endless stringing together of questions about the direction and meaning of one's life to be particularly literary, especially if no attempt is made to provide possible answers. It is the product of a culture that no longer feels there are answers because it has lost faith in the Truth. Yet as he ages, Michael not only continues to pose questions but also attempts answers, subtly implying that there must be Truth out there, or else we would not continue to seek it. I came to appreciate the author's attempt to show the narrator's development over time from a sheltered, provincial adolescent to an experienced man of the world and veteran of multiple failed relationships and one failed marriage. But since the whole story is told as a retrospective from one point in time, it would seem that the aged Michael Berg would be as adept at handling the questions he asked as a teenager, as he is at handling the questions he asks as an adult.
The best written chapter of the novel is the fourth chapter of the second act. In it Michael describes a "numbness" which has taken over everyone in the courtroom as the case drags on. "It had taken hold not only of the perpetrators and victims, but of all of us, judges and lay members of the court, prosecutors and recorders, who had to deal with these events now; when I likened perpetrators, victims, the dead, the living, survivors, and their descendants to each other, I didn't feel good about it and I still don't." The author is at his best when trying to find the balance between acknowledging the humanity of the perpetrators and condemning the crimes that were committed. It is something that Germans have a hard time with. A few years ago when the movie Downfall appeared, detailing the final weeks in Hitler's bunker, it met with a great deal of criticism for putting too much of a human face on Adolf Hitler. For many he must be a monster without any humanity at all; that way he can be an anomaly. If he were human--and enjoyed pleasure and suffered pain and had doubts and loved--then he was like the rest of us, and that doesn't say as much about Hitler as it does about the rest of us and what we may be capable of.
"I wanted simultaneously to understand Hanna's crime and to condemn it. But it was too terrible for that. When I tried to understand it, I had the feeling I was failing to condemn it as it must be condemned. When I condemned it as it must be condemned, there was no room for understanding. But even as I wanted to understand Hanna, failing to understand her meant betraying her all over again. I could not resolve this. I wanted to pose myself both tasks--understanding and condemnation. But it was impossible to do both." This is one of the best explanations of the conflict that the post-war generation was faced with. Condemning and understanding seeming to be mutually exclusive. It might not necessarily be good art, but it's good writing.
In the end Hanna is sentenced to a greater prison term than she (legally) deserves, because she is loath to disclose the fact that she is illiterate. It seems strange to the reader that the plot of the novel and the trajectory of Hanna's entire life hinges upon her illiteracy and a sense of pride that won't let it be revealed. The author recognizes this and goes to great length to have Michael explain to the reader why Hanna would rather let herself be unjustly sentenced rather than simply admit she couldn't read. It didn't really work with me; I just had to go with it and accept it, even though I couldn't really buy into it.
Then comes the end of the novel. For all of the years of Hanna's imprisonment Michael has been recording himself reading works of literature and mailing them to Hanna. As she is about to be paroled he agrees to be a care-taker for her upon her release. He has obtained an apartment and a job for her, has met with her, and she appears ready to begin life again. Yet the morning of her release she hangs herself. Why? A key might be provided by the warden of the prison. When asked by Michael how she had lived, the warden replies she had served out most of her time like a nun in a convent. But in the last few years she had let herself go to seed, even though she didn't seem unhappy. "'In fact, it was as though the retreat to the convent was no longer enough, as though life in the convent was still too sociable and talkative, and she had to retreat even further, into a lonely cell safe from all eyes, where looks, clothing, and smell meant nothing. No, it would be wrong to say that she had given up. She redefined her place in a way that was right for her, but no longer impressed the other women.'" It could be that Hanna realized she would not be able to continue such a life on the outside. And if it's plausible that her pride would allow her to serve 18 years in prison rather than admit she was illiterate, then it's plausible it would cause her to end her life rather than leave prison. As Michael explains to the one surviving victim of Hanna's crime, Hanna did not want her years in prison to be merely the required atonement, she wanted to give her own meaning to her experiences. Again, I'm not sure that I can buy into the explanation; I just have to accept it for what it is. And one must accept the novel for what it is: deeply problematic, but at times an articulate, well-worded explanation of an important chapter in German post-war history. Ultimately though, I'm stretching to be as positive as I have been.

(A Haunting Book and Movie)
『It is 3am on Monday morning and I can't sleep. "The Reader" has been haunting me over the past few days, or I should say, over the past few months. I watched the movie and read the book at the beginning of this year and I just re-read the book and watched the movie again.

At the end of the book, Michael dreamed about Hanna on his way from Boston to New York. Hanna had been dead then, but in the dream, Michael's longing for Hanna was so intense that it hurt. I knew this type of longing - it often hurt even sharper than a physical pain. Last night I dreamt about my recently lost love. I couldn't remember what happened in the dream, but what stayed with me was the pain of longing and not belonging. I have dreamt about my first love many times and woke up in tears more than once over the past 20 years. Michael had spent only a summer with Hanna, but he could never get over her. I know I would have similar difficulties to let go.

Hanna's longing for literacy was as strong as Michael's longing for her. Hanna's shame of being illiterate was as strong as Michael's shame of having loved her.

I have been thinking a lot about Michael's conversation with his father regarding dignity, freedom and happiness. Yes, even a child can take no comfort of knowing his mother is always right. Every adult should have the last word on his own matters. Nobody has the right to force his opinion on other, to take action behind other's back, even if it were for the good, the happiness of the other person. It isn't about happiness - it is about an individual's dignity and freedom. Yes, dignity and freedom, those are the things I have cherished most. I once fought my parents for my freedom when I was fresh out of college. I strongly desired to take control of my own life. I made my own decisions and ate my own mistakes. I don't blame others, and I want nobody's control in the name of "protection". Dignity and freedom are more important than "happiness". At the end of the day, happiness is a personal feeling: nobody can tell you how you should feel. Only you feel how you feel, and you know how you feel.

So many conflicts among family members and between couples are caused by lack of respect to other's dignity and freedom, lack of respect to other's right to make his own decision, or lack of courage to make his own decision.

Yes, I agree that Michael has no right to tell the judge about Hanna's illiteracy; even it could help Hanna's case. Yes, I agree that Michael should have talked to Hanna and persuaded her to admit her illiteracy. However, I understood why he couldn't bring himself to face her.

Courage to face the reality, courage to dig out the potentially very ugly truth, no every one possesses that kind of courage.

Another detail touched me was the picture of Michael's graduation that Hanna clipped from a local news paper and attached on the wall of her prison cell. Michael finally realized that, under the disguise of a cold surface, Hanna was as deeply attached to him as he was to her. I would have done and I had done similar things before. Love is an obsession and an addition that you couldn't/wouldn't/shouldn't get rid of. You can squeeze it to a "niche" for a certain period of time; but eventually it would flood you unexpectedly.

I am not trying to write a review of the book/movie. I am merely pouring out my feelings at this moment.
