(Excellent intoduction to Tae Bo)
『Would recommend this for someone starting out Billy Blanks Tae Bo. In the instructional video, he explains the correct way of doing the punches and kicks and what areas and muscles of your body you're working on. I did a once run through the instructional video but found it boring coz I was already doing Tae Bo cardio prior to purchasing this. And unlike the Cardio version which had lots of breaks in between (butterfly), this video even the Basic workout, seems too fast for me. But I'll still follow this video a couple more weeks. I guess when you can remember the steps, it'll be easier.』

A mixture of boxing punches and martial arts kicks, Tae-Bo is funandeasy. One of the best elements of this four-tape set is that the first tape (which is 40 minutes long),Tae-Bo: Instructional, lays out the movements you need to successfully complete a workout. Once you've mastered the steps, you won't have to fast-forward through half the tape to get to the workout, nor will your workout be slowed down by the repeated lessons. After you feel comfortable with the movements (and they're really quite easy to follow; nothing too complicated to trip you up), you're ready to move on toTae-Bo: Basics, a 27-minute workout (5 minutes of warm-up, 18 minutes of Tae-Bo, and 4 minutes of cool-down) that will have your heart pounding and your body sweating. Next comesAdvanced, a 57-minute workout that will have your heart racing, pulse pounding, and sweat glands working overtime. There's razzmatazz on the moves, with slightly more complicated combinations that should be fairly easy to master if you've completed the first two tapes. While the 8-minute idea is compelling, it's not an adequate substitute for the longer workouts. 『This is a good video, he suggests you play extremely tight and the starting hands chart that comes with it pretty much says dont play anything less then AA, AK, KK, KQ, QQ, JJ, or pocket pairs. As a poker student, I believe that he is just giving you a solid place to start, and the follow up dvd to this one will have info on playing hands other then the ones mentioned above.

I think this is a great video if you are a beginner, and decent if you consider yourself lower to mid intermediate level. I think the lesson learned for me was to not play junk hands, which isnt a lot, but there was enough info on WHY NOT to make it worth the time and money.

I have the follow up to this dvd, (MORE secrets of no limit hold 'em) ordered and I will review that one in the next week or so. Since your out shopping for dvds on holdem, I would say you wouldnt be wasting your money unless you know all about starting hands and position.』

『This is highly recommended for beginning players who want to take their game to the next level. If you want to build a house, you've got to start with a solid foundation. This DVD gives this foundation, which most beginning players are sorely lacking.

My advice would be to learn the starting hands, odds, and other techniques covered in this DVD, then practice for a few games. Then, watch Howard's 2nd DVD, "More Secrets of No-limit Hold 'em." The two DVDs together will propel your game to the next level.

Why not 5 stars? My only criticism of these two DVDs is that they're missing what I view is a fundamental tool that all poker players should have in their arsenal: 'The Rule of Two and Four,' which is in another DVD, "Final Table Poker with Phil Gordon" (another excellent DVD). This rule is by far the simplest way to calculate your approximate odds of making a drawing hand. After the flop, multiply your outs by four to get your percentage of making a winning hand. After the turn, you would multiply your outs by two to get your percentage of making a winning hand. An example would be if you have four cards of the same suit after the flop. You need one more card of that suit to make a flush. There are 9 "outs," which are 9 remaining cards of that suit that would make a flush. After the flop, take 9 outs X 4 = 36% chance of making a flush, once both the turn and river have been played. After the turn, if you still haven't made your flush, then multiply 9 outs X 2 = 18% chance of making the flush on the river. This is a powerful tool, and helps you decide whether to play a hand.

I would say that Howard's two "Secrets..." DVDs, combined with Phil Gordon's DVD, are the best way I've seen to master the game. I feel that these DVDs, along with lots of practice, can advance you from a rookie to a solid beginner-intermediate player.』

『The sub-title reads "The Ultimate Guide to No-Limit Holdem". It is hardly an ultimate guide. It is a beginner's guide at best and that's if you live ina cave and don't watch televised poker. Televised poker gives you a primer on the game nearly every broadcast and good commentary to fill in the gaps. Even Lederer as an analyst/ commentator is more helpful than this DVD; I think the main problem here is the target audience is expected to be almost completely ignorant and so it feels a bit too elementary. If you are completely new to holdem it is probably okay otherwise it feels a little patronizing. Consider renting as once you understand the basics you probably won't rewatch it.』

(Feel-Good In-Flight Film...)
『... and nothing more. But sometimes that's enough, like a cold Sam Adams when the only other beer on tap is Coors or Budweiser. KLM offers dozens of films on its trans-Atlantic flights, but most of them are Harry Potter I-VI or GI Joe Cobra in various combinations of language and subtitles. Thus it happens that I felt rather benign about this rather flimsy concoction of a film. I was hoping for a strongly-spiced "food movie" on a par with Stanley Tucci's 'The Big Night'. Tucci plays a long in 'Julie and Julia' but his part is as bland as the mixed vegetables in a steakhouse. Julie and Julia is NOT a food movie; it's a sentimental feel-good marriage-crisis movie about Julie, interspersed with a Saturday Night Live spoof of Julia Child.

Meryl Streep is killingly funny as Julia Child, but her performance is pure parody. There's no story to it - not that a story is required - and there's precious little 'food' for thought. A minor surprise is delivered when, at the end of the film, a phone caller tells Julie that Julia doesn't entirely thrill to her fingertips at being exploited for her fame. That surprise remains unexamined.

The real story is Julie's, about Julie, and "it's all about Julie" in Julie's world. I suspect a generation gap appears in my reaction to sweet little Julie and her navel-gazing blog-to-fame. I found her to be an annoying twit. I would have felt quite sorry for hunky hubby, except that he had no personality to feel sorry for. The two tales here - of Julie's marriage and of Julia's education of French cooking - are shuffled together with a minimum of cinematic artistry. All I can really offer is the advice that, if your choice on your next flight is J&J or Harry Potter VII.5, go for J&J.』

(Five Stars for Film, No Stars for DVD Special Features Manipulation)
『Well, I guess it's finally happened...the consumer and film buff who does not own a Blue-Ray compatible DVD player is now officially SOL. The standard DVD release of Julie and Julia contains as special features only a commentary track and behind-the-scenes featurette. To get the full array of special features, one must purchase the Blue-Ray version of the film, AND of course, a Blue-Ray dvd player. Here are the features NOT available on the standard dvd: tour of Julia Child's kitchen in the Smithsonian; featurette "Friends and Family Remember Julia Child;" and "Cooking Lessons," with Julia Child, Jacques Pepin, and other renowned chefs preparing several of Julia Child's best-loved dishes. Why can't the studio release a two-disc special edition in the standard format for consumers like me who don't own the latest home entertainment equipment? I loved the film (especially The Divine Ms. Streep), loved Julia Child's book "My Life in France," very much liked Julie Powell's book "J&J," and can't tell you how much I've been looking forward to owning the DVD. I'm miffed, and in no position to go out and buy myself a new DVD player in this economy, not even at Christmas. This really stinks. So, five stars for the film itself, no stars for the DVD release manipulation.』

(A peculia mish-mash)
『This is a curious film. It is in two parts presents in an overlapping function. One is a drawn out going nowhere account of Julia Childs many years of writing a 700 page cookery book, the other is about Julie Powell (contemporary, and about whom they said, "Who?") Julie is surprised to find she is a writer and is respected for the quality of her blog about copying Julia Childs's recipes.

Meryl Streep plays Julia Childs as if she is continually drunk or on the happy pills. What is it? A local accent, or was JC continually drunk or on the happy pills? Does one have to be American to understand such a strange way of speaking? Are there people in the US who actually speak like that?

The film is long and seems to be going nowhere, and the impression is that someone made a film about Julia Childs, realized it was dull, drawn out, and boring, and decided to add something novel to rescue a botched effort. The fact that someone became obsessed with re-creating Julia Childs's recipes over a whole year and write about her experiences in an internet blog seems to have been a story that has been cobbled on to salvage something from the efforts.

Julia Childs did not realize how unrealistic and unworldly she was, or how unscrupulous she was with her French collaborators, and Julie Powell was equally unworldly and did not realize that she was a good writer.

This film is a mish-mash and will baffle and certainly not please anyone who is not American

(Five Stars for Streep)
『A friend of mine who was an actor once told me that he thought the hardest part to play was someone either living or within living memory. With the coming of the internet and YOUTUBE age, that's likely to become a more common problem, but no less daunting.

And Ms. Streep pulls it off with a performance so good it was like Julia Child breathed again in all of her good-hearted, iconoclastic glory.

Honestly, overall, I did not care for the film too much, and I could have cared less for the other actors in the film. That's just my opinion, and other reviewers have written about them in glowing terms, so perhaps I missed the bus somewhere and may have to rethink that position one day. Also, there have been some serious complaints that the Master Chef (I am unsure of the formal title) of the Cordon Bleu was depicted in a way that made her look like a far more snobbish and dreadful person than she actually was. Nevertheless, it is absolutely worth it just to watch the scenes with Ms. Streep. It's one of her best performances yet, and that's saying something. She takes a so-so movie and a so-so script and makes them sparkle as the legendary gourmet who tried to make everyone's life a little happier through those most basic and delicious media - good, hearty unpretentious food, good company, and good cheer. Just an amazing performance, and were she alive, I will just bet Julia Child would have been the first one on her feet cheering and clapping.

I note with a smile that the one thing you will not want to do is watch this movie on an empty stomach!

Julie&Juliais based on the book by Julie Powell, a frustrated New York bureaucrat who wants to be a writer. "But you're not a writer until someone publishes you," she moans. So she gives herself a challenge: to cook her way through Julia Child'sMastering the Art of French Cookingin one year, and to blog about it. As Powell (played with chirpy determination by Amy Adams), begins to find her groove as a cook, and her voice as a writer, the project takes on a life of its own--and in the end it does provide the struggling young woman with her life's purpose, to her very pleasant surprise. But mostly,Julie&Juliais a valentine to Child, to Child's amazing love affair with her dashing husband, Paul (Stanley Tucci, as divine as any soufflé in the film), and to her outlook on embracing life, and ordering seconds. Streep throws herself into the Child role with real affection for her character, and while certain of Child's idiosyncrasies--including her warbly voice and unflappable haphazardness in the kitchen--are retained, it's Child's character and vision which form Streep's portrayal, and which make the film so involving and rewarding.

Nora Ephron directs with deftness and a light touch, though she seems at times to be encouraging some of Meg Ryan's onscreen tics in Adams (the self-conscious head tilt, for one). But mostly she simply allows Streep to channel Child and her love of food, her husband, and 1950s Paris. And that is a recipe for something truly sublime.--A.T. Hurley』

『Wow, I read some of the bad reviews and was blown away that they hated it so much. I'm a star trek fan (I cant tell you all the details of every single event that ever happened in star trek) that loved, loved, loved this film. The haters have to get over themselves and their big brains.

Of course there are some plot flaws that are obvious but ITS A MOVIE!! They couldn't have done a better job on the casting, Bones was a little over the top, but after watching it at home he grows on you. I simply cant believe the haters were not enjoying this film. Chris Pine is awesome as Kirk.

Sorry I just have to defend this film, I think some people want to hate on something so they can pretend to be "smart trekkies". I know 99.9% of the people who watch this will think its awesome like ME!』

『I've been a Star Trek fan as long as I have conscious memory; I've thoroughly enjoyed all the movies and series, but the Original Series has ALWAYS been my favorite. I grew up watching it in syndication, had the first two seasons on VHS which I eventually wore out, and have read countless of the novels, mostly focusing on the original Enterprise and her crew...I'm one of "those guys" who can tell you planet names, ship classifications, et al...proudly, I might add...so it was with no small amount of concern that I approached this "re-imagining" of what to ME was an integral part of my childhood, and still a large source of enjoyment to me as an adult. I read all the hype, followed the casting, read the blogs...and I was very, VERY worried. I didn't like the idea of someone new and NOT a fan taking over the helm and lives of my heroes.

Gotta say, I even subconsciously boycotted the film in theaters...finally, however, I sat down to watch the DVD, with more than a little grudge in my mind...I truly expected to hate it.

Now I won't say that, as a Trekker, I didn't have some issues with it...I don't want to put spoilers in this review, but there are a couple of glaring things that just punched me in the jaw...

...but as I kept watching, it all got to be all right (for the most part). The actors did an excellent job of portraying the characters the way I remember them, even improving in some areas...the writers paid ample respect and tribute to the legacy of the series, and Surak save me, I actually thoroughly enjoyed the film.

****POSSIBLE SPOILERS UPCOMING****

What few issues I have are easily relegated to the overall point of the plot; I mean, let's face it, parallel universes and alternate timelines are things that we as Trek fans ought to be used to by now, and as other reviewers have pointed out, just because a new timeline has been branched out upon does NOT mean that the timeline we know and love is erased...it's still there, just running in another continuum.

I liked the movie. I really did, and I look forward to the hoped for sequels...I don't view this as a replacement for what has gone before, but rather as a way to explore what different things could have happened to my favorite Starfleet heroes, as I think they are admirably recaptured in the actors portrayals, and I am anxious to enjoy their new adventures alongside them once again.

『"Stardate 44...whatever" - Jim Kirk, Star Trek (2009). Sums up the care taken by Paramount to include the elegant and detail rich universe that once made up Star Trek. "Star Trek, Star Wars... whatever" is what I believe the writers and producers decided upon prior to setting out on this high-budget endeavor to destroy one great universe. Is it a good flick? Yes! Is it a good Star Trek? Definitely not.

They summed up their feelings towards us Trekkers in the movie quite nicely: by having "Admiral" Archer's prize beagle in a transporter accident thus being lost forever. Their way of saying to us: "it's our franchise and we can do what we want to it, show us the $".
3.5 stars if it wasn't a Star Trek Film
0 stars if they claim otherwise.

I'm very glad I boycotted the film in the theaters and decided upon renting it first. This one will not be in my STAR TREK collection, as it simply doesn't belong in that universe.

(Interesting Rewrite, Flawed but Has Possibilities)
『Being a fan of TOS since I was a very young child (I first became enthralled when it got syndicated in the early 70s when I was in elementary school), I awaited to see how Star Trek could be "re-envisioned" as it was never something I thought needed to be revisited. What this movie delivers is a bit like the original series itself, some good, some bad, some awesome and some just...meh. My husband and I watched the DVD the day it came and then again two days later as we were really torn over the whole "newness" of it during the first viewing. The second viewing definitely helped me better form my opinion. Overall, the movie is a good basis for what I hope will be a whole series of new movies but it is very far from perfect. This kind of feels like a pilot episode of a tv show. You get the basic premise but the whole series direction is still very up in the air with fine-tuning to occur as the series progresses.

The stuff that most definitely works.

Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy. In my opinion, the absolutely most perfect part of this film. It was like watching a young DeForest Kelley. I've liked Karl Urban since I first saw him in Xena and enjoyed him, as limited as his role was, in both The Two Towers and The Return of the King. Never could I have imagined that someone could be Bones, other than the original beloved character, but Karl Urban nailed the role so perfectly it was absolutely unbelievable. Two thumbs up and five stars for his outstanding performance.

Simon Pegg as Montgomery Scott. I hated Simon Pegg in Shawn of the Dead (the only other thing I've ever seen of his) and absolutely dreaded watching him massacre one of my favorite characters. However, I was more than pleasantly surprised in his portrayal and very much enjoyed the new Mr. Scott. Thank you Mr. Pegg for making such a fun and very true to character Scotty. I look forward to more of the same.

Chris Pine as Captain Kirk. Wow. I am actually surprised how much I have come to like the redone Kirk. The first time I watched the movie I wasn't sure how much I liked the new Kirk. After thinking about it, how Kirk would have been changed due to the difference in his upbringing with a loving father to one with a cold and unlikable stepfather and his removal from the original Kirk's early life, I realized that Chris Pine has very much created a Kirk who is believable in his changed circumstances but still retaining the basis for a Kirk to care about and want more of. Cocky, slightly angry but with the basic core of the cowboy diplomat we have long known and loved.

Bruce Greenwood as Captain Pike. Really enjoyed his portrayal of Captain (now Admiral) Pike and thought his character was well portrayed and liked his inclusion.

The stuff that mostly works.

Anton Yelchin as Chekov. Still having a hard time with this character. I liked the enthusiasm and I liked the energy but it was hard to get over the complete lack of similarity to Walter Koenig in either looks or characterization. He just did not feel like Chekov to me. And I'm not even going to go into the hair. He may grow on me...hopefully not in a fungus sort of way. I will reserve judgment for the next movie.

Zoe Saldana as Uhura. Pretty but not as exotic looking as Nichelle Nichols, this redone Uhura has promise. She has the intelligence of the first Uhura but is more sassy and aggressive (well, most of the time). Like Chekov, I'll wait for the next movie to decide yay or nay. I think I like her, but part of my holding back is discussed below in stuff I just didn't like.

The stuff that mostly didn't work for me.

John Cho as Sulu. His portrayal of Sulu feels as bland a bowl of cooked pasta compared to a serving of lasagne. Something was just missing. Sulu was never boring or bland. He might not have been considered a major character for most episodes but George Takei's Sulu was always interesting in my opinion. I personally wish that James Kyson Lee could have been released from Heroes long enough to take this role because Ando is probably about my favorite character on that show and Mr. Lee would have been able to make Sulu work so much better than John Cho did.

The stuff that didn't work for me.

Zachary Qunito as Spock. He has the look but goes through the movie with a smirk and an overwhelming show of emotion that is just so not Spock. Kirk is the one whose entire childhood and adolescence was changed, not Spock. Quinto plays Spock like he's channeling Sylar on meds. Only at the very last couple of minutes of the movie does he come close. Please, oh please, make him watch those few minutes over and over in preparation for the next movie and smack him with a rolled-up newspaper if he tries to portray Spock as he did through most of this one. If nothing else, please, whatever you do, get rid of the storyline issue that I mention below.

The stuff that so didn't work its not even funny.

The Enterpise. Why does this new Enterprise look like the Motion Picture version mated with a pregnant guppy, given the Andy Warhol treatment and then had botox injections? The engine nacelles are absolutely hideous and are the worst part of this nightmarish reimagining of our beloved Enterprise. The interior just doesn't work, some stuff way too futuristic looking for the time period and some stuff way too antiquated for the time period. Try to get a little closer to the feel of the Enterprise from the horrid Enterprise series from a few years ago to at least make it tolerable. Somebody needs to fire whoever came up with this design and get a real Star Trek designer in there for the next movie. And what's with the bizarre engine noises when the Enterprise is flying?

And last but not least, the Spock-Uhura romance. Okay. Ick. The lovey-dovey smooching on the transporter before they beamed over to Nero's ship made me want to turn off the movie or throw up (not sure in which order). I get that Uhura is interested in Spock in this movie and Spock has the hots for her too. This is a face/palm situation if I've ever seen one. I rolled my eyes at my husband when we first watched it and he had the exact same reaction. This is just not working at all. Uhura with Kirk, yes. Uhura with Scotty even (from the ST-V movie). But Spock with Uhura????? Uh, no. Even worse is that its protrayed like they are maybe 10 years old in a sickly sweet, get-me-my-insulin kind of relationship that is just completely unbelievable.』

It has enough action, emotional impact, humor, and sheer fun for any moviegoer, and Trekkers will enjoy plenty of insider references and a cast that seems ideally suited to portray the characters we know they'll become later. Both a prequel and a reboot,Star Trekintroduces us to James T. Kirk (Chris Pine ofThe Princess Diaries 2), a sharp but aimless young man who's prodded by a Starfleet captain, Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), to enlist and make a difference. At the Academy, Kirk runs afoul of a Vulcan commander named Spock (Zachary Quinto ofHeroes), but their conflict has to take a back seat when Starfleet, including its new ship, theEnterprise, has to answer an emergency call from Vulcan. An appearance by Leonard Nimoy and hearing the late Majel Barrett Roddenberry as the voice of the computer simply sweeten the pot. 『My two year old became bored with the current Sesame Street Narrative. He loved Elmo for about 8 months but now is no longer interested.

However, He has been enthralled by the old school because the short and creative segments are trippy, and funny. Kermit, guy smiley, lots of bert and ernie and grover segments.

Also it seems there are no muppet characters on the current S.S. that are above 6 years old. Kermit was a perfect "adult" foil and interviewer.

『If you've ever sat watching new episodes of the oddly blandicized noughties version of Sesame Street with your little one and thought,"This SUCKS. Elmo must be a lobotomized munchkin.I thought Sesame used to be great.Has my memory cheated me?",rest assured,it hasn't. The two volumes of these compilation 'old school' prove that the Sesame Street that Generation Xers grew up with in the seventies and early 80s was responsible for some of the most inventive,funny,creative,hummable television ever created while still teaching kids the three 'r's.How poor our generation would have been if Jim Henson,God Rest His Soul,had given up on a career in puppetry and gone back to accounting school.
The key to Sesame's success as a learning aid was to copy the slick,colourful,humourous style of television advertising,and like the ads,use constant repetition of these vignettes to drive the message home. These small films gave rise to a wealth of creativity,with many artists drawn from all sorts of independant art styles employed to present numeracy and literacy in a catchy,entertaining way.Attention to the values of decency,equality and tolerence also lifted SS above the norm and made it a genuinely revolutionary cultural artefact of its time.
Sesame's brand of infectious humour and singable ditties had a way of permanently lodging into your heart and mind.I'm 42 and I can still hum my old favorites: the Pinball-inspired,'1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 ...'song,the 'Ladybug's Picnic'(complete with jokes about fire insurance!),'C is for Cookie','Rubber Duck' etc.Enormous fun and proof that the messages really took.Thankfully,all the best ones you remember are likely to be included on either one of the two volumes.
Yes,some of the info has dated,and there IS an advisory warning on the dvd that not all of the material may be suitable for modern tots.(For example,not sure I would let an under-6 catch public transport or go to the store by herself in these troubled times.)But as long as you watch WITH your toddler to act as a filter for the material(or fastforward thru' the handful of skits out of sync with modern attitudes)this is a great DVD you can genuinely ENJOY(not just watch) together. My 3 yr old niece,who rejects noughties-period SS as 'howwible') LOVES old school Sesame Street.
And if you don't crack a smile during the 'Rapunzel' skit("Horsey??? Where's my horsey???") you are officially dead.

The drawing that does the announcement is really annoying, luckily you can skip over him. I bought this for my young son, and while he likes it- I'm thinking I should have went with the newer episodes. I was really excited about buying the vintage episodes, but having seen them now I probably wouldn't buy them for a child, maybe an adult that would remember them the original time they aired.』

『I'd been searching for the authentic Soundtrack to "Mamma Mia" for quite awhile...getting the usual Broadway Soundtrack suggestions...but at last I found this Soundtrack from the Movie...perfect sound and such fun!』

『"Mama Mia" is one of those movies that you almost have to warn people about watching. BEWARE....it's addictive!!! I've shown the movie to people who were adamant "chick flick" haters who came away absolutely beaming. It genuinely makes you feel good....but now for the down-side. The music is very hard to get out of your head. We all found ourselves humming the songs off and on for over a week. Then, just when we thought we were over it....the music would come back to us, and darn it all if we didn't just start feeling good all over again. Now those are the kind of after effects I can handle.』

(A pleasant surprise)
『I must admit, I approached the movie, and the soundtrack, with some reservations. I knew that Meryl Streep could sing (she sings quite well, actually, in both "Postcards from the Edge" and "Prairie Home Companion"), but I love ABBA. The first time I watched the movie, I must admit I cringed a few times. Pierce Brosnan cannot be considered a great singer (or even, frankly, a good one), but he threw his heart into his songs, which makes up for a lot. You can't really sense that on the CD. The weakest singer is Stellan Skarsgard, probably, but as he usually speaks his lines in the songs, it isn't too bad. Colin Firth surprised me with both his singing and guitar playing in "Our Last Summer". Yes, he did both. The standout song is Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper playing the young lovers singing "Lay All Your Love On Me". Both have very good voices. And Meryl singing "Slipping Through My Fingers" is poignant without being cloying, while her "The Winner Takes it All" is raw with repressed emotion.

The thing is, the CD can't effectively present some of the songs. I'll buy it, because I now have the DVD and can imagine the songs from the movie while listening to the CD. I'm waiting for the full soundtrack, however! The movie grows on you, as you let go of your preconceptions from the bad reviews, or you just decide to enjoy it as a guilty pleasure.』

『I bought this set for my birthday, having bought her "Mastering The Art of French Cooking, Volume One (1) (Vol 1)" years before because I found a lot of her recipes either easy to use "as is" or to adapt to my diabetic diet while still retaining the pleasure of real food. I find that even the early black and white episodes are full of useful, practical information, even as they entertain. My five year old also enjoys them - and is fascinated by black and white television, having never seen such an outlandish thing in her life aside from the brief snippet in "The Wizard of Oz (70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition with Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]." She particularly enjoyed the "Spinach Twins" and "The Potato Show" - particularly when Julia flipped a huge potato pancake right there. Onion soup and boullibase made an impression as well; when we went grocery shopping on Saturday, we stopped for lunch at Panera Bread. When she found they served onion soup, she insisted we had to get a bowl. I let her order one and she made it through half - doubtlessly it bore little real resemblance to Julia's (It did have cheese in it.) but it was a new taste for a five year old and you can't go wrong with that.』

『We recieved the DVD in a very timely matter, but when we actually opened the DVD, we knew immediately that there was something wrong with it. The picture on the front of the DVD looked like it had been printed on a printer that was running out of ink and was very smudged. We tried to get the movie to play on 3 different dvd players and could never get it to work. The bonus disc worked fine, but not the actual movie disc. I dont know much about bootleg movies, but if I was too guess, I would say this was one. I would like to say though, that we did recieve an immediate response, when we emailed about the problem, and I had a credit on my credit card by the next day.』

While it may seem a little pricey for a kids DVD, my daughter loves it so much that it has already paid for itself. It's as wonderful of a movie as I remember from my childhood, with all the memorable songs. I'm glad that I got a chance to pass this movie on to my daughter. The colors seem brighter on the re-released version, but that may be because my tape was about 20 years old. A worthwhile addition to your collection, as it is a classic Disney movie the whole family can enjoy.』

『Of all the animated Disney classics, this has remained my favorite ever since it came out. It's not just the beautiful songs and haunting score. Nor is it just the stunning artwork. The charming characters are not the sole reason as well. It's a combination of all these factors and more that have made "The Little Mermaid" the masterpiece that it is. What's great about it, is how well it has stood the test of time. Granted, it's been "merely" 2 decades since it debuted, but it has quickly become an enduring classic. Each release on video or DVD sold millions of copies and the soundtrack went sextuple platinum. That's a classic right there. Of the animated classics Disney released in the 90's, "Mermaid", "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King" have undoubtedly remained the most popular. I urge anyone who doesn't own a copy of this "Special Edition" to go ahead and buy it. The film has never looked or sounded better.

『Fans awaiting a revamp ofThe Little Mermaidon DVD should be pleased to know that the new, fully restored version gets the treatment it deserved all along. The Special Edition is presented in 1:78 aspect ratio, as opposed to the original 1:66 presentation, and gone is the grainy original transfer, which had Ariel's mottled complexion looking like she spent some time in a tanning bed. Various crew members chime in on the audio commentary track, but most dominant is composer Alan Menken, who adds in previously taped interviews with the late lyricist Howard Ashman (a welcome surprise). There's also a 45-minute "making of" documentary in which everyone from animators to Jeffrey Katzenberg and Leonard Maltin reflect the limp state of Disney animation beforeMermaidkicked off its "golden reign" of the early '90s. Another revelation: Katzenberg nearly eliminated "Part of Your World" from the movie after a hyperactive kid sitting in front of him appeared restless during a test screening.

Other features: a documentary on Hans Christian Andersen, and the tragedy of his personal life that inspired his much darker original ending. (The mermaid, unable to stab the prince in the heart after he marries another, turns into sea foam.) Included is an animated short of Andersen's "The Little Match Girl," a tale so depressing--again, reflecting the loneliness in Andersen's own life--it's not really clear how it ever became a "beloved bedtime story." There's also a sing-along feature, which jumps right to the musical numbers with words appearing onscreen. Deleted scenes include one unused song, "Silence is Golden," and various early sketches of alternate takes. One curious addition is a virtual Little Mermaid amusement park ride, which was originally proposed for Disneyland but failed to come to life. (Seems digitizing the experience for people to "ride" in their living room was the consolation prize.) The only blasphemous feature is a music video of "Kiss the Girls," reimagined as a Hilary Duff-esque rock song--minus the charming calypso beat that made it famous(!)--sung by the Hilary Duff-esque Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical). Aside from that, if you ownThe Little Mermaidin its 1999 incarnation of DVD, get the special edition and leave your old one for the kids (or the dog) to scratch up. --Ellen A. Kim

『I love the Harry Potter series and Half-Blood Prince is one of the best books in the series. To be honest i enjoyed the movie except for the beginning and the ending. I didn't care for the fact that Dumbledore had met Harry at the train station. I was really excited to read in the book that Dumbledore had gone to the Dursley's and took Harry out of there. I was also disappointed when they didn't have Dumbledore's funeral. They pretty much just let him lay dead on the pavement. I thought the cave was exciting and i was really happy that it turned out the way it did in my head when i read the book. I thought it was a bit dark and different for the Harry Potter series. I liked that the writters incorporated the fact that Tonks and Lupin were in a relationship. I thought that it could have had a better ending. All in all i like H-BP and anyone who is a big fan of the books would probably like me and be alittle dissapointed!』

『Wow, I laugh at the people who rate movies poorly based on what they read in a book. Books don't normally make for a very good film in the first place. The best thing I feel to do is to separate the two ideas of film vs. book. Two different thing and therefore must be viewed in two different ways. It's like comparing apples/oranges, Tupperware/tool boxes, Ford Temp/private jets etc.

I watched this one before I saw the others so I went back and watched 1 all the way up to this (I finally understand it). In comparison to the first 3 the films do get better as they progress; less character development and more of the good stuff. If you're wondering, I'm not much into reading fantasy books. I'd much rather read a physics text, engineering text, or even a dictionary (something educational). I get my fantasy time from watching movies.

Anyway, I thought the film was good and I'd buy the blu-ray for $17

(Remedial Movie Making Paid off!)
『I know what you're expecting me to say if you've read my other comments "this movie sucks I hate it!" well then I'm here to prove you wrong. I saw this movie in theaters and actually walked away pretty satisfied. The plot actually works. Some parts were a little quirky but some were necessary. Like having Dumbledore stare at a picture of a woman to skave off the rumors that he is gay. The makers obviosly wanted him to die with dignity so people wouldn't say: "Oh, well there goes the gay guy." while I liked this movie I do have some issues with it (ooo issues.) Harry's new love affair with Ginny was unexplained. It just seemed like one day he lookd at her and said oh wow she is good-looking. Using Dean Thomas as a ruse to make Harry jealous was slightly referenced but not convincing as she was perfectly prepared to snog Harry when he was at the Burrow, even though she didn't succeed. Ron's affair with Lavender was ended to abrubtly for my tastes but oh well. But as always the adaptations suck. One is where Harry, with no explanation as to why, is not at the Dursley's but at a cafe making dates with waitresses while the world is being destroyed!!! Also the destruction of the Burrow, not only was it unnecessary and cruel but immposible. In the book it explains that the Burrow has all the enchantments that Hogwarts has so the Death Eaters couln't destroy it, or even apparate to it. It seems like a pointless hit and run just to creat enmity between Harry and Bellatrix. then when harry almost kills Malfoy, a member of Snape's house, he gets caught by none other than Snape and just runs away and Snape lets him go without a word! Don't get me wrong the movie was good I give it an A for acceptable. Not bad but I expect better for the two part seventh one and hopefully either John Williams or Chris Columbas comes back, just a hope!』

Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) suspects Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton) to be a new Death Eater recruit on a special mission for the Dark Lord. In the meantime, Professor Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) seems to have finally removed the shroud of secrecy from Harry about the dark path that lies ahead, and instead provides private lessons to get him prepared. It's in these intriguing scenes that the dark past of Tom Riddle (a.k.a. Voldemort) is finally revealed. The actors cast as the different young versions of Riddle (Hero Fiennes-Tiffin and Frank Dillane) do an eerily fantastic job of portraying the villain as a child. While the previous movies' many new characters could be slightly overwhelming, only one new key character is introduced this time: Professor Horace Slughorn (with a spot-on performance by Jim Broadbent). Within his mind he holds a key secret in the battle to defeat the Dark Lord, and Harry is tasked by Dumbledore to uncover a memory about Voldemort's darkest weapon--the Horcrux. Despite the long list of distractions, Harry, Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) still try to focus on being teenagers, and audiences will enjoy the budding awkward romances. All of the actors have developed nicely, giving their most convincing performances to date.

More dramatic and significant things go down in this movie than any of its predecessors, and the stakes are higher than ever. The creators have been tasked with a practically impossible challenge, as fans of the beloved J.K. Rowling book series desperately want the movies to capture the magic of the books as closely as possible. Alas, the point at which one accepts that these two mediums are very different is the point at which one can truly enjoy these brilliant adaptations.Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Princeis no exception: it may be the best film yet. For those who have not read the book, nail-biting entertainment is guaranteed. For those who have, the movie does it justice. The key dramatic scenes, including the cave and the shocking twist in the final chapter, are executed very well. 『The popcorn arrived full of melted grease and it was not from the box sitting out in the sun. I retrieved it as soon as it was delivered. The boxes were greasy. Too much of the butter had melted throughout which left me concerned about the quality of the product. I used what I could because I just didn't have time to go back and forth over popcorn. I will never buy popcorn through Amazon again. Tender White was my favorite popcorn until this experience, but not any more.』

You couldn't smell it until you opened the cellophane and then it hit you. The individual bags were each soaked through. NOT the boxes, the actual bags of popcorn had oil soaked through them. The boxes looked fine; they weren't crushed or old in appearance or anything like that. I have always bought Orville Redenbacher's popcorn this is the first time I've ever had this problem. 『Before I bought this media player, I did my research on AVS forum. Here were the major reasons helped me make up my mind.
1.Inexpensive.
2.Support rmvb format files.
3.Support .iso DVD menu with button on remote.
4.Support online update.
5.BitTorrent download support...you know what I am talking about...

After I got my toy,
1.Remote is amazing! Quick response! Very user friendly.
2.UPnP function works well. No problem plays video from my Playon app.
3.Smooth PC connecting.
4.I have tried to play rmvb, avi, and DVD image file without any problem.
5.Fantastic image and sound quality, totally worth it!!
6.The last and the most important one for me, fast and stable BT downloading!! (I have AT&T 6MB DSL)

By the way, I did contact customer service to ask a couple technical questions, and they responded nicely and quickly.

I had never heard of brite-View or CinemaTube before that point, but because someone included a link to their website I checked out the product. Holy smokes! I thought. This product actually looks pretty awesome! The price is certainly right, too. When I discovered a $5 coupon code on a deal forum I jumped on it.

This little black box is amazing on its quality, speed, and ease. I was able to set it up easily and I didn't have to read the user manual at all. The box is small, and the fan-less design produces no noise. It plays every file from my storage, boots instantly, and it just works. It fits my need perfectly. I love this thing. And for $100 (with coupon applied), how could you go wrong. This has made my life so much easier. This would be a great holiday gift I think.

Oh, just fyi: I'm a gadget-loving female. So if you're looking for a media player with the highest *caugh* WAF *caugh - you're looking at it.』

『I have tried both WD TV and CinemaTube. For my review, I will be comparing CinemaTube primarily with WD TV since these are the media players having similar features at similar prices. Despite WD TV is the most popular media player, CinemaTube wins and I will show you why. To my belief, there are no other media player at this price right now which can beat CinemaTube. And, this is a statement from an advanced user.

I have tried both WD TV and CinemaTube by hooking it up with my 1.5 TB external hard disk drive (HDD, Seagate 7200 rpm inside) via USB and then connecting the player to my 720p plasma HDTV via HDMI.

What CinemaTube CAN do:

# Plays virtually any file you are aware of. I have many different files in my HDD, namely, x.264 coded MKV, DivX/XviD coded AVI, WMV, RM, MP4, MOV and so on. None of them failed. It even played .MTS files (from my HD camcorder) flawlessly. Unless the file specs are unusual and/or not supported by CinemaTube, it should play well. Other than WD TV Mini, none of the WD players play RM files.
# Can play upto 1080p although I could be able to test upto 720p as my TV does not support 1080p.
# DTS + Dolby digital ready. Could not test it as I do not have a dedicated surround system.
# Video preview. Very nice feature. Not available in WD players.
# Resumes playback. WD players does this too, CinemaTube does only in a nicer way.
# Edits playlist.
# Plays DVD menu with dedicated button. This means if normal DVD disk is copied into the HDD as VIDEO_TS folder or ISO file, CinemaTube plays it as if you were playing a DVD in normal standalone DVD player (for example, if I want to turn on/off English subtitles or go to a specific scene (scene selection), or extra features). None of the WD TV have this great feature. I actually returned WD TV because of the absence of this feature.
# Downloads torrents (simultaneously 3). I could be able to do it by setting up a static IP address for the player. No WD players can do it.
# UPnP streaming through 3rd party apps. CinemaTube is a networkable media player, so it can connect to your home network. Did not test it.
# Turns HDTV into a supersized digital photo frame.
# Plays a plethora of formats for music, photo and subtitle files.
# Compatible with Mac file system (HFS+ supportive). Not available in WD players.
# Remote control is bigger but much better than WD's.
# Really light and not too big.
# Universal voltage (100-240 V). Consumes little power.
# Spin down the HDD when the player is turned off.
# Two USB ports; one HDMI, component, composite video each; one L/R S/P DIF optical audio; one Ethernet port. Other than WD TV Live, none of the WD players have Ethernet port for internet connection.
# Can show files directly from any plugged USB storage devices like digital camera or camcorder like Flip Video.
# Optional wireless USB adapter.
# Now comes with HDMI cable. WD does not offer it.
# Does firmware update (online/USB update) frequently to get you more and improved features. This is where WD disappointed me. They have been in the market for so long time, but do little update.
# CinemaTube seemed to be faster than WD TV when same USB drive was loaded. Keep in mind that loading time of a HDD may vary depending on its capacity, rpm, how much space you are using, etc.
# I have liked its interface.
# Many more features you will come to know only when you play with it.

What CinemaTube CANNOT do:

# Can't search media file you are looking for. Here WD players win. CinemaTube still has to come up with an update to include this essential feature (specially, when you have hundreds of files in your HDD).
# Can't copy files between USB drives. WD TV Live does it.
# No torrent uploads. Torrent communities typically want members to maintain a typical upload/download ratio, therefore, you eventually have to use a computer to "upload" something. In addition to that, computer can offer better control in torrent client like configuration, speed, details, etc.
# Changes drive letter to a different one. Keeping the drive letter the same is important specially if you have OS files in your USB drive. You may have to reassign the drive letter if you want to hook it up back again with your computer.
# WD players are somewhat smaller than CinemaTube.
# WD has an online community which can help you.
# Occasionally, it fails to respond, but that happens to every standalone media player including WD players.

Last but not the least, excellent customer service from Brite-view. They respond to your email promptly and really try to answer your question. Their reps are knowledgeable. I cannot tell you how many times I asked them questions, but they responded very well. On the other hand, WD reps are just disappointing.

Bottomline: If you are looking for computer-free media file playback, torrent download and streaming, you are going to love this gadget. For your peace of mind, frequent firmware update and excellent customer service are also right there. Buy it, you won't regret.』

(brite-View Did It Again with CinemaTube! Decent Player)
『I own the last gen device (CinemaCube; BV-5003) too and the CinemaTube (BV-5005HD) is definitely a notch way up. It now comes with full HD 1080p support in all file format, and acts as a streamer and P2P downloader. The product is very easy to use and the remote control that comes with it is in high quality and very responsive. I am especially happy they decided to go with the black design this time (it does tend to "attract" finger prints, though).

- I connected the CinemaTube to my network; its very easy to configure and connect the files in my pc (I have Windows Vista Home Premium).
- I watched movies via network and CinemaTube works fine without any problem.
- I watched most HD videos (Xvid 720p, mkv 720/1080p,) stored on the hard drive attached to the BVCT as suggested; it works like magic. No problems so far.
- The online firmware option is GREAT! Very easy breezy.
- The UI is basic and simple. To me it's really great and easy to use, but the brite-View guys are working on the improvement of GUI according to this brite-View rep on a user forum.
- The subtitle configuration is great.
- ISO and DVD file support is pretty good with all menus working.
- Being able to create a playlist is pretty nice, although it only works with the attached drive (not with file on the netowkr)
- USB Connectors on the rear is much better than the CinemaCube design
- Torrents can actually be pulled from the networked PC now (I had to put them on a USB drive first and feed it to the CinemaCube before).

Overall, it's a great product with great price, with very friendly and responsive tech support.』

All I want is plug in, play and enjoy my variety of media files via "fair-priced" unit through my TV. No matter reading from my external hard drive or streaming from my pc, cinematube does the great job for me. simple and easy to use. some other time, I use it's upnp function to watch hulu and youtube via other application i downloaded in my pc. it's truly additional bounce for me. And also dedicated remote, online update, and torrent features attract me a lot.

BTW,I noticed several threads from other forums discussing how admired of their customer service and refund policy. I vote in!

『My external HDDs in use now total 4, and I wanted a sleek vertical form factor so that I could line them all up in a small space under the desk where they will be cool, protected and out of the way. The soft white glow from under the base and from the Seagate logo bathes one of the darkest places in the house with convenient and aesthetic walkway lighting when the computer is turned off or the drives are in use. Silent for practical purposes, I've not yet known them to overheat. The rest is speed, which is constrained by the cable standard in use, and reliability. As to the latter, all I can say is "so far so good" after about 6 weeks.』

『The Seagate FreeAgent Hard Drive for Mac is easy to set up and get running with Time Machine. Backup is automatic and you don't have to think about it. Moving or copying files to the hard drive was also easy.

However, for a product that is supposedly compatible with a Mac, the hard drive disconnects when my iMac goes to sleep. When coming out of sleep mode, the iMac gives an error message that the hard drive has disconnected. I emailed Seagate about this issue, and after several rounds of emails with multiple people, their "mac expert" said that the problem has something to do with the firewire connection. The Seagate person said it was an issue with Apple and the operating system, and that the hard drive was fine. If that is the case, then the drive is not fully compatible with the iMac. I've dealt with this issue by using sleep mode less frequently, and hoping that my files are getting backed up most of the time.』

『This camera replaced my Canon Powershot. After about 6 weeks of usage, the inside pictures are just not measuring up to my Canon. What attracted me to the camera was its wide angle and zoom features - after the first week we were going to return it, but chose to give it some more time - now its really too late to return it, but over all this is going to be more of an outdoor camera. Also, you should know that this camera now has firmware that prevents any battery other then a Panasonic battery from working, so all the generic brands that are sold on Amazon will not work. What is most disturbing about this is Panasonic made this decision without ensuring adequate supply. The battery is not available on Panasonic's own web site, my local camera stores, and its very difficult to find on the web. Amazon will have it in stock the end of December, for $50.00, a mark up over Panasonic's list price of 40.』

『I don't often get around to doing reviews - never enough time - but have to do one on this. I've always loved amateur photography and remember my Minolta X700 SLR days fondly. For the last few years just been using point and shoot digitals - still not quite ready for a nice D-SLR.

But what a GREAT little camera is this Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3. It has a little bit of manual-ish-ness to it with some not too hard to get at menu settings, but you really can let it do its thing in the various automatic modes, and it comes out great.

I got it a few weeks back for a trip to Chile, and I am not disappointed in the least.

Also, I've never been into taking video, just love classic still shots, but with this camera have discovered the value and fun of taking short video shots (editing out the boring parts later :-) and capturing that other dimension of action and interaction that works great for certain settings - again in full auto mode, the video mode is of very nice quality. I can see now that in future camera, I'll be want to concern myself with this capability.

All in all, a point and shoot digital of this caliber will always be part of my life, even when I decide I've found a D-SLR that I like.』

(First impressions)
『I've had the ZS3 for about 12 hours and have barely scratched the surface (not literally of course). My initial impression is of a high-quality build and feel (lens zooming is way quieter than my Canon A570, for example), detailed photos, and LOTS of functionality. Of course I love the zoom range, LCD image quality, and HD video. I just shot a little AVCHD lite, put it on my laptop using the Panasonic software, and watched it on TV over HDMI. Worked like a charm. I may not bother buying the HDMI cable for camera-to-TV, since it was so easy transferring to my laptop.

I read so many reports of loose mode dials on this model that I expected it. But the mode dial is NOT loose at all on my camera. It is exactly as tight and notchy as I would want. Apparently it's not endemic to the camera.

I may add to this review when I have more experience with the camera.』

(Fantastic Camera)
『I love the new Lumix ZX3. This camera has an amazing 12x zoom lens and a fantastic 3" upgraded display. For the price and the size of the camera, I don't think there's a better choice. Using HD video (720p) is a snap with the dedicated video button. The AVHCD lite format integrates perfectly with iMovie on the Mac. Even the higher ISO pictures (up to ISO800) are usable, which is a far cry from other cameras this size.

There are some negatives with the camera. While operation speed is decently quick, it is not class-leading. Takes a second or two to start up and there is a bit of shutter lag. Also, the face identification system is mostly inaccurate. The camera thinks that my 5 year old daughter and her friend who has a significantly darker complexion are both me, a man in his 30's with glasses and facial hair. The battery life is decent, but for shooting a full day likely will need a recharge or second battery.

My primary camera is a Nikon D90 but for a second camera that's highly portable, takes great pictures, has a massive zoom, and terrific HD video, the Lumix ZX3 stands above the crowd. I highly recommend buying this model if you are in the market for something in its class.』

『I'm not going to spend a lot of time reiterating what everyone else has said about this camera. It does have a few flaws, however I think given the overall value of the camera, it has been great to use.

This is my first DSLR, however my third SLR. I have previously owned two Minolta film SLRs which were both great, but it became a hassle to develop photos for me. I found that after I bought my digital point and shoot, the convenience of digital overcame the need to swap out lenses on a film camera. Until now when I jumped to my new DSLR...

Therefore, this is an excellent camera for someone with experience with SLRs. It works for a beginner, however I think newer models like the D3000 would be more suitable if you are just starting off since that camera is more geared towards holding your hand while shooting. This camera has the user friendliness, but also has quite a few advanced features for those in the know or willing to learn.

The articulating screen is kind of a double-edged sword. The fact that it swings down is nice as I've used it quite a few times to get some unique angles with the camera and when closed it protects the LCD from scratches. But auto-focus in live view is very slow. I recommend that you use LV only when framing a shot. Once you have the shot set, turn off live view and then take the shot (best on a tripod). The main negative to the swing down screen is that some tripods prevent rotating of the screen once the camera is mounted. Fortunately my tripod's quick-release is shaped in a way that I can mount the camera and articulate the screen without hitting the tripod. The other negative to the articulating screen is that its much smaller than the screen on the D90 and has a lower resolution. It also is almost worthless to view pics if you are shooting outdoors. There is quite a bit of glare in bright light as well as its hard to tell if the shot was what you wanted or not. To me this is the single biggest complaint of the camera--good thing the screen doesn't affect the photo quality.

I've only shot one video with the camera. I didn't buy a DSLR to shoot video, so this feature really does nothing for me. And I'm guessing that more people are probably in the same boat as I am.

Pros:
-Excellent image quality
-Camera size is great for its portability
-Intuitive controls; easy to use for photographers with a good understanding of photography
-Great value
-Articulating screen and live view are great when used properly
-Will shoot video if you need it--its a nice feature but it isnt going to replace a dedicated video recorder.

Cons:
-Articulating screen can be annoying if you don't have the right tripod.
-Live view is worthless unless using it to frame up a shot. Takes about 6-8 seconds to autofocus in LV mode
-LCD is not very good to view in bright light.
-The view finder is a bit dim--esp compared to the D90.

To sum things up, this camera is great for an 'advanced enthusiast' looking for a great value. If you are a photographer who new, get a D3000. If things like in body focusing motors and larger viewfinder are important to you, then I'd say its worth paying a few extra hundred on the D90. But if you don't have an extensive Nikon non-AF lens collection, then I really don't see much reason to pay extra money for the D90 since the internals are all pretty much the same.』

『This is my first DSLR camera, and I can say right off that it's very easy to use and takes amazing photos. I chose the D5000 because a friend who is a professional photographer recommended it saying I should invest my money in lenses not the body. I believe this is true, but there is a consideration to make when purchasing the D5000, or the other Nikon entry-level cameras such as the D40/D40x/D60/D3000, and that has to do with the auto-focus motor.

The D5000, which tops Nikon's entry-level line, does not include an auto-focus motor in the body, instead it relies on a "silent wave" auto-focus mechanism in the lens (AF-S). This is supposed to be very quiet and fast, though I don't know if that's true compared to the screw-drive motors used in other camera bodies. It's also supposed to be more cost effective and allow for a smaller/lighter camera body, but again I'm not sure if that is quite true or exactly why Nikon chose this option for their entry level line (if anybody knows more about this please feel free to comment). However, this option will limit users who already have a collection of Nikon AF lenses (not AF-S), as well as those purchasing a Nikon for the first time. The AF lenses will work fine but have to be manually focused. That said, more experienced users would probably not be purchasing an entry-level model; a more appropriate starting point would be the D90.

So as far as lens compatibility? The first lens I sought to purchase was a fast prime (FFL) unit for indoor/low-light and portraits. I looked at the low-priced 50mm f/1.8D AF, but the auto-focus is not compatible. Same with the faster and more expensive 50mm f/1.4D AF, as well as the 35mm f/2D AF. Also, no luck with the Tamron or Sigma FFL units, though I did see some Tamron zoom lenses with AF-S compatibility. I became very concerned that my options would be severely restricted, and perhaps I would need to return the camera and upgrade to the D90 or go with the Canon T1i. However, I discovered the 50mm f/1.4G SIC SW, which came out last year, and also the more moderately priced 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX which currently sells for about $200. That unit came out earlier this year (I haven't chosen yet). I also went to the Nikon homepage, and noted that 30 of the 50 current auto-focus lenses listed were AF-S, so while the options are limited, the average non-professional user shouldn't have a problem finding an appropriate lens for the occasion - including many professional level models. I also suspect that Nikon will include AF-S in more if not all future auto-focus lenses. Users will find the least options with Nikon's wide-angel, standard, and telephoto models. Most of the super telephoto, wide-angle zoom, standard zoom, high powered zoom and close up lenses include AF-S.

PROS of the D5000

1. Has virtually the same image sensor as the D90 and D300. This puts the D5000 in good company, and one could argue it's more of a prosumer or mid-level class camera than its entry-level predecessor, the D60. It's almost a D90, but just lacking of a few options and the D90's ruggedness. The difference is about $300.

2. Flip LCD; I considered the Canon EOS Rebel T1i, and while both the Canon and Nikon have their advantages, both are very similar with the exception of Nikon's flip LCD. I consider this more than just a novelty. It not only protects the screen but is practical in some situations, such as shooting photos overhead. The D90 does not have this function either.

3. Easy to use; I got fantastic pictures right off using the auto mode as well as the pre-set scene selections. However, users are not restricted to these options and experienced photographers should enjoy the camera alike. Just like the D90, the D5000 has scene modes on the dial, but it also has 13 additional modes from the menu which adds benefit to novice users. I tried the night landscape and sunset with excellent results.

4. The lens is very good for a kit, and includes Vibration Reduction (VR). The lens by itself currently sells on Amazon for about $185 new, as appose to the model without VR which is currently priced at $110. Users may also want to pick up a fixed lens and/or higher power zoom, but the kit lens should be fine for most users. That said, I'm sure this camera could be taken to another level with the right lens.

CONS

1. Price; the D5000 may be priced a little high for an "entry-level" camera, but again it's $300 less than the D90, and in many ways comparable. It's also slightly less than the Canon EOS Rebel T1i.

2. Ruggedness; some may say it's a little "toyish" with the plastic finish, and being light (which isn't a bad thing), but overall it looks sharp and is well built. I handled the D90 and some of the pro lines, they felt a little more rugged, but of course are designed for more abuse (and cost much more).

3. AF-S auto-focus (see above)

Bottom line, if you're looking for a great camera with the ability to produce real quality photos, but you don't want to spend a small fortune, the D5000 is a great choice.

I have also bought the Nikon 18-200mm VR2 and they make a very very good combination. This will be my everyday camera for all occasion.

Why I bought the D5000 over D90

The D5000 has the same image quality as the D90/D300 (same image sensor), share the same picture control&ADR but in a lighter&more compact for traveler like me. It is also the quietest SLR camera. That swivel LCD is the main reason I bought this camera.

I travel a lot and getting a small camera is a must, frankly I prefer the D40 size but went ahead cause of Nikon Gen 2 features (especially the ADR). I take all pictures in Aperture priority mode&was a pain to get used to (No top LCD) but I got use to it eventually and had also swapped AE lock to ISO control.

The fun part of this camera is the swivel LCD. This feature removed the tripod when traveling. I can now take pictures of myself&friends by reversing the LCD&snapping away with one hand (I use to do guess work&nobody like to repeat their smiles for 3-4 times). I can now snap people in trains, restaurant, pubs w/o pointing in their face. I take my time to compose such shots. No more paparazzi style&no more crawling and kneeling down for macro shots. It really feels like those old cameras where you look down and take pictures -- a refreshed way of taking pictures.

The grip is good enough to start snapping away with one hand. However pro photographer may not like the feel of it especially if you are coming from bigger camera like D3,D70.

I really like the gen 2 in camera processing, It makes the colors pop. I set saturation&sharpness all the way up for landscape and neutral for portraits. I really like the result. I am spending less and less time on post processing. The ADR is also superb. If u are taking pic inside train tunnel, U will be able to capture the texture wall of the tunnel. Its closer to what our eye see things. Older Gen 1 will only see the light at the end of the tunnel, everything else is black. No more burning&dodging. ADR can aslo be turn off.

There is not much direct control button, but its good enough for me, I only need ISO and Aperture. Everything else has to be change from LCDs. I feel like returning it initially but somehow I got so use to it that I can change settings as fast as the direct buttons. I will describe the learning curve like dialing phone numbers. Once u get used to it, u can dial 10 digit in 3 sec. I always knew Nikon has a way to make it work.

I am also quite impress by the speed. I don't mean the speed in continuous snapping (which has an impressive 4fps by the way), I mean the speed in powering it up&shooting right away. I had the impression that it might be slow due to the leans cleaning each time its power up. I was wrong. There was no delay at all. I am able to pull out the D5000 from sling bag, power it up, shoot, power off&put back in the bag in a single swing motion with one hand. Much like Hollywood cowboys pulling guns out. This is important when traveling to foreign land where hanging it on my neck like a tourist is not an option.

Cons

The live mode is very slow ..much slower than point and shoot. Takes 4 secs to focus. The Video mode is completely useless&I really mean it. Its jerky&had no auto focus. The problem is, I only have 2 hands. Left hand on manual focus, right hand to control zoom, so who is holding the camera? assistant cameraman? Wish there is top LCD for changing aperture.

Despite all the down side, this camera is really a worthy buy in terms of $$ for the image quality. Pair it with a 18mm -200 mm Vr2&you will get a all in one camera for your next travel.
